Earth Treks North America's Largest Climbing Gym

Earth Treks in Englewood, Colo., just opened last week. It is the largest climbing gym in the United States. We visited and were impressed it invested equally in roped climbing and bouldering.

Earth Treks North America's Largest Climbing Gym

Hold after hold, I reach for big, white blocks that mark the direction of my route. I’m climbing a 5.10a that slightly overhangs on one of Earth Trek’s tallest walls. It towers 55 feet and is just one of the hundreds of routes climbers can choose from.

Earth Treks Englewood , located just south of Denver, opened last week. At 53,000 square feet, it’s North America’s largest climbing gym.

Initially, climbing in North America’s newly opened largest climbing gym went as expected. There are ropes, walls to climb, and staff to check you in. It felt like any other climbing gym.

But after my tour of the roped climbing area, the allure of Earth Trek dawned on me. The company invested nearly the same amount of space to both bouldering and roped climbing — a rarity in American climbing gyms.

Earth Treks Climb: America’s Largest Climbing Gym

I visited Earth Treks on a weekday afternoon for a climbing session and tour. Staff greeted me at the entrance, and I filled out a waiver.

Earth Trek’s marketing director, Tori Barnett, met me at the door for a tour.

The air was markedly calm, not exactly something you’d expect from a gym that opened one week ago. Climbers are going through the motions of picking routes, chalking up, and talking about weekend climbing plans.

Tori told me it picks up after working hours but never feels crowded, which is to be expected in a gym this big. There are plenty of routes for everyone.

Earth Treks North America's Largest Climbing Gym

We walked past places for belay lessons and exclusive climbing parties. Grigris hung from each of the top ropes, which is something new for Earth Treks. Climbers must use the gym’s belay devices if they want to top rope.

Earth Treks turned to professional climber Jason Kehl to design the walls. Each curve and overhang is proprietary to this gym, so climbing here is inherently unique.

But admittedly, there weren’t any jaw-dropping features on the walls. There are some cool, twisty cracks and a slab wall that stands out. And in the bouldering area, there are some challenging roofs and arches.

Otherwise, it’s pretty par for the course as far as climbing walls go.

Holds, Route Setting, Fitness: Earth Treks Englewood

Earth Treks flew in 25 route setters for the initial set at the gym. And after climbing a few top rope routes, the wall’s height is apparent.

The routes are long and enable setters to employ a multitude of fun problems for climbers to work through in each route.

And in the bouldering area, the routes are spread out — thanks in part to its massive space. You’ll find just about any style here, whether you prefer stemming, crimps, slabs, or slopers.

Earth Treks North America's Largest Climbing Gym

Earth Treks hired four dedicated setters for the Englewood location. Every eight weeks, climbers can expect a totally new set gym.

Gym-goers have access to a yoga studio, a fitness classroom, and a large free-weight and exercise equipment area. And you better believe there’s tons of climb-specific training equipment like Tension Boards , campus boards, and hang boards.

Earth Treks Englewood: Our Take

After climbing for two hours, I felt like I barely scratched the surface. In that time, I did some roped climbing, bouldering, and core. And I still felt like there was so much more to do.

Earth Treks North America's Largest Climbing Gym

Most days of the week, there are five yoga classes and two fitness classes. The fitness classes include core, high-intensity 30-minute workouts, and climb-specific training.

And child care is unique to this Earth Treks location. Parents can drop off their kiddos while they get their send on.

Rates are $22 for a day pass and $79 per month for an individual. You can learn more about pricing here .

I imagine Earth Treks to appeal to climbers with varied interests. With massive space dedicated to both fitness and climbing, you can work out in just about any way you can think of.

If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend checking it out. Climbing here is a novel experience and will definitely freshen up the gym climbing routine.

Moscow is Russia's capital city and is the largest city in the country. As of January 1, 2010, Moscow's population was 10,562,099, which also makes it one of the top ten largest cities in the world. Because of its size, Moscow is one of the most influential cities in Russia and dominates the country in politics, economics, and culture among other things. Moscow is located in Russia's Central Federal District along the Moskva River and covers an area of 417.4 square miles (9,771 sq km).

The following is a list of ten things to know about Moscow: 1) In 1156 the first references to the construction of a wall around a growing city called Moscow began to appear in Russian documents as did descriptions of the city being attacked by the Mongols in the 13th century. Moscow was first made a capital city in 1327 when it was named the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. It later became known as the Grand Duchy of Moscow. 2) Throughout much of the rest of its history, Moscow was attacked by rival empires and armies. In the 17th century a large part of the city was damaged during citizen uprisings and in 1771 much of Moscow's population died due to the plague. Shortly thereafter in 1812, Moscow's citizens (called Muscovites) burned the city during Napoleon 's invasion. 3) After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Moscow became the capital of what would eventually become the Soviet Union in 1918. During World War II, however, a large portion of the city suffered damage from bombings. Following WWII, Moscow grew but instability continued in the city during the fall of the Soviet Union . Since then, though, Moscow has become more stable and is a growing economic and political center of Russia.

4) Today, Moscow is a highly organized city located on the banks of the Moskva River. It has 49 bridges crossing the river and a road system that radiates in rings out from the Kremlin in the city's center. 5) Moscow has a climate with humid and warm to hot summers and cold winters. The hottest months are June, July, and August while the coldest is January. The average high temperature for July is 74°F (23.2°C) and the average low for January is 13°F (-10.3°C). 6) The city of Moscow is governed by one mayor but it is also broken down into ten local administrative divisions called okrugs and 123 local districts. The ten okrugs radiate out around the central district which contains the city's historic center, Red Square, and the Kremlin. 7) Moscow is considered the center of Russian culture because of the presence of many different museums and theaters in the city. Moscow is home to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the Moscow State Historical Museum. It is also home to Red Square which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . 8) Moscow is well-known for its unique architecture which consists of many different historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its brightly colored domes. Distinctive modern buildings are also beginning to be constructed throughout the city.

9) Moscow is considered one of the largest economies in Europe and its main industries include chemicals, food, textiles, energy production, software development, and furniture manufacturing. The city is also home to some of the world's largest companies. 10) In 1980, Moscow was the host of the Summer Olympics and thus has a variety of different sports venues that are still used by the many sports teams within the city. Ice hockey, tennis, and rugby are some popular Russian sports. Reference Wikipedia. (2010, March 31). "Moscow." Moscow- Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia . Earth Treks Climbing and Fitness Joins The UNION Collective

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

UNION Collective Announces First Tenant, Earth Treks Climbing and Fitness First Baltimore Location is Part of Company’s National Growth Strategy

Baltimore, MD (May 23, 2017) –UNION Collective, located at 1700 West 41 st St., today announced that the nation’s leading indoor climbing gym operator, Earth Treks Climbing and Fitness , will be a tenant of the new community-centered retail and business complex in Baltimore’s Hampden neighborhood.

Construction will begin in November on what will be the company’s seventh climbing gym, and first in Baltimore City.

The 20,000-square-foot-gym will be Earth Treks’ first facility focused on bouldering, and will feature over 10,000 square feet of bouldering terrain as well as a yoga studio, functional fitness and cardio zones, training areas, and retail pro-shop. The site will have ample parking and easy access from I-83.

“Earth Treks has served Baltimore-area climbers since 1990 and we are thrilled that at long last we’ll be opening our first gym in the city. There are many synergies between the climbing community and craft beer community, which made this development and partnership the perfect fit for us,” said Chris Warner, Earth Treks founder and CEO. “We’re excited to call Hampden home, and look forward to being part of its vibrant community.”

“Our goal in developing UNION Collective is to do our part to make our city a better place to live, work, and play in. A key aspect of that mission is to retain existing growing businesses already in Baltimore, as well as attract new ones to move to the city for future growth,” said Adam Benesch, Co-founder of UNION Craft Brewing. “Not only will this facility foster community, which is also a part of our mission, it will offer something that doesn’t exist anywhere else in Baltimore City. Earth Treks is a leader in their industry for many reasons, and we’re excited to see them open in this space.”

The announcement of the Baltimore location comes on the heels of news of another Earth Treks gym to be constructed in Englewood, CO. Earth Treks Englewood will be the largest climbing gym in the nation. Both locations are due to open in 2018.

About UNION Collective:

Located at 1700 W. 41 st Street in Baltimore’s Hampden-Medfield neighborhood, UNION Collective will transform 10.5 acres and 138,000 square feet of warehouse space space located at 1700 W. 41 st Street in Baltimore’s neighborhood of Hampden-Medfield into an interactive and collaborative assembly of several of Baltimore’s growing independent businesses. With 87,000 square feet adjacent to UNION Craft Brewing’s new headquarters, brewery and taproom, the project will be home to eight other commercial tenants. Local makers, non-profits, and other community focused businesses will produce and sell their wares on site, share resources, collaborate, and connect with the community at large. Construction on the project begins July 1, 2017. For more information, visit www.union-collective.com .

Bouldering_Earth Treks

Bouldering is a style of climbing—the walls in the Hampden gym are appropriately called “climbing walls” just like our other facilities, but all the climbing walls are low and designed specifically for bouldering.

On higher walls, you use ropes (and a partner that manages that rope) to protect yourself. This is what we’d call roped climbing.
