• ​Real-life manhunt adapted in 'Endless Journey' film

Filmmaker Chen Sicheng has taken a new path in his career by producing a realistic drama based on a creative nonfiction story. The film marks a departure from his previous mystery case-solving blockbusters such as "Detective Chinatown" and "Sheep Without a Shepherd," as well as this summer's hit "Lost in the Stars."

"Endless Journey," a crime film produced by Chen and directed by Dai Mo, hits Chinese cinemas on Dec. 15. The story follows a group of former police officers on their yearslong pursuit of a murder suspect. Initially investigating a horrifying rape and murder case, they were imprisoned after a failed interrogation resulting in a suspect's death. Emerging as underdogs post-sentence, they, undeterred, reunite as vigilantes under the team leader's inspiration. Their dedication and perseverance unfolds in the film as they uncover the truth.

"I read the reports very early on, and I felt it was a story about a brave and lonely man. Then what really touched my heart was screenwriter Zhang Ji's script, which turned a one-man hunt into a team pursuit," Chen told China.org.cn. "I'm really interested in these kinds of stories — about individuals making choices and showing perseverance after encountering accidents in their destiny."

As he got deeper into the development of the script, Chen considered directing the film himself. However, he eventually entrusted the project to his long-time collaborator, Dai Mo, who directed the blockbuster film "Fireflies in the Sun" and the hit online series of "Detective Chinatown" for Chen's company.

Addressing the audience at the premiere in Beijing on Dec. 10, Dai highlighted his commitment to Chen's principle of "preserving authenticity and evoking emotion in the audience." More specifically, he eliminated some of the more dramatic elements so as to effectively communicate sincerity and emotion. To ensure the actors could immerse themselves deeper in their roles, the director deliberately adopted a sequential shooting approach.

As many industry insiders and fans praised him for "stepping out of his comfort zone," Chen noted that he and his company As One Production would like to explore more genres and fields in the future, the only precondition being a good story. "Realistic stories are much more difficult to find," Chen said. "They're happening all around us, but the creative process may be even more challenging than other genre films."

The original story of "Endless Journey," written by Shen Lan and published online in 2018, is more legendary than any fiction — exactly what Chen was looking for. 

The film features a stellar cast, including Zhang Yi, Li Chen, Wei Chen, Cao Bingkun, Wang Xiao, Zhang Zixian and Yang Xinming. While lead actor Zhang Yi has played cops before in film and on TV, Chen said that his performance is different this time and even better than he expected.

"Everyone may face difficulties and challenges in their lifetime. I hope this film can comfort people, easing their anxiety and predicament, and delivering some solace, warmth and bravery," the producer added. "Accidents and difficulties are things that none of us can avoid in our lives, just like the characters in the film, but we can choose how we face these difficulties."

Endless Journey is a community based hospice service providing care to eligible clients within the home or facility setting.  The service is initiated by a referral from the physician, family member or client when it has been determined that the illness is terminal, and aggressive treatment would be ineffective, no longer viable, or has been declined by the client.

The client is then assessed for eligibility and if so determined, physician orders are established and the client may be admitted to hospice care.

A Multi-Disciplinary Approach

All disciplines work within their scope of practice and per Medicare/Medicaid guidelines. We do not assume the role of primary caregiver, instead provide a supplemental support service that manages the terminal illness with priority to pain control and quality of life, per direction of the client’s physician and the hospice Medical Director. Endless Journey recognizes the benefits of non-pharmacological interventions and a holistic approach to end of life care. Additional services are offered to nourish clients’ minds, bodies and spirits including but not limited to: massage therapy, acupuncture, dietary consultations/alterations, Dentistry, Chiropractic services, reiki, healing touch, aromatherapy, guided meditation, pet and music therapy etc.

Endless Journey was founded by a Registered Nurse with 10+ years of hospice experience and a passion for client choice. She pre-selected a team of experienced hospice professionals to develop a business plan with the focus of education and the restoration of dignity to the dying process. Hospice pre-dates the medical model and regulated eligibility. Families have been surrounding their loved ones in their homes with the goal of comfort as they prepared for end of life for decades. The origin is inspiring and paramount to the success of Endless Journey. ‘Hardest Geezer’ Russ Cook enjoys a day off running after epic Africa journey

Endurance athlete from Worthing says he is ‘just trying to soak it all in’ after completing 352-day, 9,940-mile run

After sinking a strawberry daiquiri and a few beers and enjoying a reunion with his girlfriend after more than a year apart, Russ Cook, AKA the “Hardest Geezer”, who completed his 9,940-mile (16,000km) run along the entire length of Africa on Sunday, woke up feeling “a little bit frosty, a little bit tired”.

And for once, the 27-year-old endurance athlete from Worthing, West Sussex, who raised more than £700,000 for charity on his epic journey, was not pulling on his running shoes. It was all “quite, quite overwhelming”, he said.

“Just trying to soak it all in really, trying to enjoy it, and the thought of not running today is a bit of a mad one. It is very, very strange,” he told ITV’s Good Morning Britain (GMB) live from Tunisia, where he crossed the finish line on Sunday afternoon after running for 352 days through 16 countries.

“I think my body said ‘finally, nice one mate, chill out a minute’. Need to get some stretching done, maybe today, but yeah, no running. Unbelievable.”

Cook’s challenge, to become the first to run the entire length of Africa , began on 22 April 2023 at South Africa’s most southerly tip, Cape Agulhas, and ended at Tunisia’s most northerly point, Ras Angela. It captured the imagination of the public, with his social media posts amassing millions of views.

Some doubt has been cast on whether he is actually the first to run the length of continent, with the dispute appearing to centre on what technically constitutes the length of Africa.

The World Runners Association, a group of nine athletes who have successfully circumnavigated the globe on foot, claimed one of its members, Jesper Kenn Olsen from Denmark, was the first person to run the length of Africa, during his “world run” challenge in which he ran across several continents.

Olsen is said to have begun his challenge on 28 December 2008 in Taba, Egypt, and run 7,948 miles to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, completing his journey in 2010.

“Mr Olsen ran through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Swaziland and South Africa. He hereby fulfilled the criteria for a full-length run across Africa,” said Phil Essam, the president of the WRA.

Cook’s significantly longer route was from south to north and along the west coast, and not as the crow flies.

He seemed unfazed, telling GMB: “I haven’t heard anything about it, to be fair. But there’s plenty of people before me that have done lots of big runs and kudos to all of them because they are big challenges. So nothing but respect, really.”

Cook faced several setbacks during his journey through rainforests, over mountain ranges and across the Sahara to raise money for the Running Charity , which provides running and mental health programmes for young people experiencing homelessness and complex needs, and Sandblast , which promotes awareness of the Saharawi people.

He was robbed at gunpoint in Angola, held by men with machetes in the Republic of the Congo, and had health scares and visa complications.

But there was never a moment he thought of giving up. “No, I always knew it was inevitable, just need to keep plugging away one step at a time and eventually it would get done,” he said.

He now plans a haircut and beard trim – “we’re looking a bit wild these days” – and will enjoy some time with his girlfriend, Emily Bell, who told GMB: “It’s been scary, terrifying at times.”

Cook said of seeing her: “It was crazy, the first time we have seen each other in 14 months. So I can’t really put into words how much that moment meant. But it’s beautiful to have a little bit of time with her.”

Speaking of the time he was most frightened, Cook said it had been when he went missing and was separated from his supporters for days in the jungle, but was eventually freed after villagers armed with machetes were paid off.

“The scariest moment was in the Congo, when I was on the back of a motorbike, thinking I was about to die, getting driven into the jungle. That was pretty nuts,” he told reporters in Tunisia. “Probably for about one minute I thought about quitting, and then I realised I couldn’t, so that was about as close as it got.”

Of his challenge overall he said: “I knew it was going to be hard but I knew I was also going into the unknown, so I had no idea really of how hard it was going to be.”
