It was an eye-for-an-eye of the tiger.

Footage captured the moment that beachgoers brutally clubbed a tiger shark to death as revenge for a Russian tourist who was killed during a “meat grinder” shark attack off a popular Egyptian resort.

[Warning: Viewer Discretion Advised]

In the savage footage, a group of boaters is seen lashing a large tiger shark that they caught to the side of their boat.

The clip then cuts to a mob of people surrounding the predatory fish on the shore as a man beats the beached beast — which appears to still be alive — with a metal pole as onlookers yell and cheer.

The clip concludes with the cameraman posing for a selfie as the savage scene unfolds in the background.

The vigilante mob was reportedly attempting to avenge the death of 23-year-old Russian ex-pat Vladimir Popov, who was devoured by a tiger shark in front of horrified beachgoers while swimming in the Red Sea off a seaside resort in Hurghada.

A man beats the beached shark with a metal pole.

Popov’s father Yury said they had “gone to the beach to relax” when all of a sudden, his son “was attacked by a shark,” CEN reported.

An eyewitness said that the attack happened close to shore near a ladder that swimmers use to descend into the sea.

“At one point, the shark appeared, and immediately bit this man,” they said. “Rescuers saw this and began to start the boat. He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.”

In the bone-chilling video, Popov can be seen splashing about in the ocean before getting dragged under as horrified onlookers scream for help.

“It’s eating his remains now,” an eyewitness who filmed the incident can be heard saying in the background.

Shark attack victim Vladimir Popov.

According to CEN, the victim had yelled, “Papa….save me” to his father before getting yanked underwater. “This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water,” recalled the deceased’s distraught father, who witnessed the brutal attack. “What kind of help can you give?”

Bystanders claimed they tried to rescue Popov but to no avail during the horrifying ordeal, which reportedly sent beachgoers running out of the water.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses claimed the shark toyed with the Russian’s body for two hours after the killing.

Yury said it took a long time to locate his son’s corpse and bring it ashore. After the remains were finally found, “the body was put in a bag and taken to the morgue,” he said.

Thankfully, Popov’s girlfriend, who was reportedly next to him at the time, was rescued, along with two other girls and is reportedly back in Russia.

Separate footage shows one of the rescued women sobbing on the beach moments after the fatal attack as two other women console her.

It’s yet unclear if she was related to Popov. So far, the victim’s father, Yury, is the only family member to make a statement.

Egyptian authorities have since confirmed they caught the shark responsible, and handed it over to researchers, so they could investigate the cause of its abnormal behavior.

Scientists also aim to determine whether this tiger shark — a species responsible for the second-most attacks on humans after great whites — was also involved in several other incidents in the area.

As of now, it’s unclear if this shark and the one filmed getting clubbed are the same animal.

The corpse of the tiger shark believed to have killed Popov.

Popov’s devastated dad deemed the attack “an absolutely ridiculous coincidence.”

“It is such a safe beach,” Yury declared. “There are ships and yachts around. It’s never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches.”

“It is just some kind of evil fate,” added the heartbroken father, who pledged to cremate his son and return the ashes to Russia.

The duo had reportedly been living in Egypt for several months, sparking speculation that Popov had been attempting to avoid being enlisted in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

While attacks are fortunately rare in Red Sea coastal regions, last year, sharks killed two women — an Austrian and a Romanian — just days apart in another popular tourist spot in Hurghada.

A tiger shark was clubbed to death in a savage revenge attack after the beast killed a tourist at a popular resort in the Red Sea.

Tourists watched in horror as Vladimir Popov, 23, was dragged under the water and mauled to death by the 10ft “meat grinder” shark in Egypt’s Hurghada.

Popov’s helpless dad Yury was watching from the shore as his son desperately screamed “papa, papa” while the predator hunted him.

Witnesses said the shark savaged Popov before toying with his body for a harrowing two hours in the water.

“It’s eating his remains now,” one witness can be heard saying in footage of the horrifying incident, the New York Post reported.

Footage then showed the beast being hauled out of the sea on a small boat in a net before being dumped on the beach and ferociously beaten.

The shark appeared to be alive as it writhed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

The video showed a man savagely smashing it over the head with what appeared to be a stick or a metal pole.

Egyptian authorities said they caught the shark that attacked the Russian man.

Researchers are now probing whether the shark was responsible to any previous incidents in the area.

Popov was on a long stay in Egypt - possibly avoiding the call up to Putin’s war in Ukraine.

His dad Yury told local media: “We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds.

“This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds... it is just some kind of evil fate.”

Initial reports suggested Popov was with his girlfriend at the time - but local media reports said she’s currently in Russia.

It’s understood a woman who was also in the water managed to escape.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a citizen from a shark attack.

When the incident happened, voices in the sea pleaded: “Swim away, swim away! Quick! A shark!”

One eyewitness said: “It was about seven metres from the shore.”

Another said: “The shark appeared, and immediately bit the man.

“He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.

“It dragged the body for two hours. It constantly dragged him under the water.”

The victim was named as Vladimir Picture:: East2West

Russian tourists have been told to be vigilant in the popular resort and follow the instructions of hotel staff.

It comes after a 37-year-old tourist was ambushed by a shark at a Red Sea resort in Aqaba, Jordan, in June 2021.

The man was parasailing when he suddenly began to graze the ocean.

A shark then leapt from the water and chomped his leg - and the tourist miraculously managed to not get dragged beneath the water.

He was left brutally bitten and sustained serious injuries from the attack.

And in July last year, a tourist was mauled to death by a shark in Sahl Hasheesh, Egypt.

A Russian man has died after being mauled by a tiger shark off one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, with disturbing video taken from the beach appearing to show him screaming “papa” as the attack unfolded.

The 23-year-old Russian national had gone swimming in the waters off his resort near the city of Hurghada when a shark emerged underwater and grabbed him.

The attack forced the Egyptian authorities to close off a 74-kilometre (46-mile) stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Officials from the Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen. He has been name locally as Vladimir Popov.

His dad has since spoken of watching the attack from the shore.

“We went to the beach to relax,” Mr Popov, originally from Russia, told the 112 media outlet. “My son was attacked by a shark, it all happened in seconds.”

“What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water.”

He added: “This is an absolutely ridiculous coincidence, because it is a safe beach. There are ships and yachts around. It’s never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It’s just some kind of evil fate.”

A nearly minute-long video appearing to be of the brutal shark attack shows the man being suddenly pulled down into the water, only for him to resurface and desperately fight off the shark when suddenly the water around him goes red.

He also screams out “papa” and cries out loudly as the shark repeatedly circles and comes back in to attack. Later in the video a witness is heard saying “it is eating his remains now” as a small ship sails in the distance.

The environment ministry in Egypt later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

Images shared on social media showed the body of the bloodied shark lying on a sheet on land.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions. In 2022, two fatal attacks were seen in Hurghada within days, killing an Austrian and a Romanian tourist.

Tiger sharks are a large species that resides in tropical and temperate waters and are among the sharks most cited by the International Shark Attack File for unprovoked attacks on humans.

Insider Today

The father of a 23-year-old man who was killed by a tiger shark in Egypt described the moment he helplessly watched his son being mauled to death.

"We went to the beach to relax," Yury Popov, a Russian national, told the Telegram news outlet 112 . "My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds."

A video of the attack shows his son, Vladimir, flailing in the water and calling out "papa" as the shark circles him. People on the beach can be heard screaming in horror. Another video showed people swimming in the water, racing to escape the horrific scene.

Popov said that the situation was all the more shocking because it happened at what he thought was a safe beach.

"What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds. He was just dragged under the water," Popov said.

Egypt's environment ministry confirmed that a man had been killed by a tiger shark in the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada on Thursday.

Vladimir had moved to Hurghada with his father and bought an apartment a few months prior, according to the Russian outlet Baza .

Some reports said that Vladimir's girlfriend escaped the waters and witnessed the attack from the beach — but this has not been confirmed.

Other videos show the animal being captured and taken to shore.

Tiger sharks commonly reach 10 to 14 feet in length and weigh from 850 to 1,400 pounds.

Egypt's environment ministry said that the shark displayed "abnormal behavior" and would be studied to determine whether the animal was linked to previous shark attacks.

There were two deadly shark attacks in Hurghada last year: a Romanian woman and an Austrian woman were killed within days of each other near the area.

It's rare for sharks to attack humans. Only five of the 57 unprovoked shark bites that were reported last year were fatal, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File .

Sharks have been known to attack humans when confused or curious , and scientists have said there is no objective evidence that sharks bite humans because they want to eat them.

The tiger shark believed to be responsible for mauling a Russian tourist in Egypt has been killed by local beachgoers.

23-year-old Vladimir Popov was attacked in front of stunned tourists while he was swimming at one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts in the city of Hurghada on Thursday. A distressing video circulating on social media showed the man struggling, screaming and trying to swim away from the shark that was circling around him and attacking. According to Sky News , witnesses claimed that the tiger shark toyed with Mr Popov's body for two hours before dragging him underwater.

Now, the media outlet has reported that local beachgoers in Egypt later drove boats out of the sea and captured in a net what they believed was the animal that killed Mr Popov. A video captured the moment when a group of people brutally clubbed the tiger shark to death as revenge for the Russian tourist.

In the clip, boaters were seen lashing a large tiger shark that they caught to the side of their boat. One man holding a metal pole was also seen repeatedly beating the shark over the head and trying to pry open its mouth.

Meanwhile, as per Sky News , Egypt's Environment Ministry confirmed that the tiger shark had been caught and would be examined in a laboratory to investigate what may have triggered the rare attack. Researchers will investigate whether it was responsible for other incidents.

As of now, it is unclear if this shark and the one filmed getting clubbed are the same animal. The officials have closed off a 74-kilometre stretch of the coastline and announced that it will remain off-limits for those planning to go for swimming or other water sports activities till Sunday.

Russian tourist dies after being mauled by shark off Egyptian resort

A Russian man has died after being mauled by a tiger shark off one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, with disturbing video taken from the beach appearing to show him screaming “papa” as the attack unfolded.

The 23-year-old Russian national had gone swimming in the waters off his resort near the city of Hurghada when a shark emerged underwater and grabbed him.

The attack forced the Egyptian authorities to close off a 74-kilometre (46-mile) stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Officials from the Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name.

The 52-second video, widely circulated on social media, shows huge splashes and commotion in the water while people kept shouting in the background

A Russian man was killed by a tiger shark while he was swimming at the coast of Egypt’s Hurghada on Thursday.

A video has surfaced on the internet that shows the Russian swimmer in the sea struggling to escape from the shark while he is dragged under the water by the predatory fish.

The 52-second video, widely circulated on social media, shows huge splashes and commotion in the water while people kept shouting in the background.

“It’s eating his remains now,” an eyewitness who filmed the incident can be heard saying.

https://twitter.com/KrzysztofJano15/status/1666821519031570439

The Egypt’s environment ministry confirmed the incident and said “an attack by a tiger shark on a beachgoer… led to his death.”

Russian media said the victim was a Russian national in his 20s and video circulated on social media appearing to show the incident. His name was revealed to be Vladimir Popov.

Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev told state-owned TASS news agency that the Egyptian authorities had confirmed to him the death of the Russian national who was born in 1999.

https://twitter.com/topnotchjournal/status/1667092523750178816

“The victim was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt,” Voropayev told the news agency.

Another eyewitness said he tried to help the Russian national but the incident unfolded in seconds.

“It happened in a second. Rescuers reacted very quickly. For some reason, I immediately felt that it was a shark. I immediately jumped up and started shouting: ‘Sharks, sharks! Save yourself!’ Nobody understood yet,” a witness reportedly told Russia station REN-TV.

Egypt’s environment ministry said a team had captured the shark “to inspect it”, saying it had displayed “abnormal behaviour… resulting in the incident”. The shark was transferred to a laboratory “for examination and all required information to determine the possible causes of the attack.”

It said water activities would be suspended for two days starting on Friday, pointing to previous attacks on people by the same type of shark.

The Red Sea is a popular tourist destination, where sharks are common but rarely attack people who swim within authorised areas.

Last July, two women, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed in a shark attack near Hurghada.

In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off a Red Sea beach after a similar attack killed a German tourist in 2015.

In 2010, a spate of five attacks in five days unusually close to the shore of tourist hotspot Sharm el-Sheikh killed one German and injured four other foreign tourists.

Brit, 64, mauled in Caribbean shark attack has fingers re-attached in life-saving op after $10k bounty issued for beast

  • Jessica Baker , Foreign News Reporter

A BRIT tourist mauled by a 10ft shark off a Caribbean beach had to have his fingers re-attached in life-saving surgery overnight.

Peter Smith, 64, was left fighting for his life after he was attacked by a bull shark while swimming off Tobago.

The victim of the shark attack, Peter Smith, 64, is pictured for the first time, with wife Joanna

Fishermen were promised a $10,000 reward if they were able to capture the bull shark that savaged the Brit.

Peter had ventured into the water near the Caribbean Island ’s Starfish Hotel during his last swim of the holiday when he was attacked just 10 metres from the shore just after 9am on Friday.

The tourist's arm was reportedly badly damaged from the elbow down, as was his left thigh.

There were fears that both his arm and his leg had been "severed".

The Brit was also said to have suffered a laceration to his stomach.

Peter, of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, underwent life-saving surgery at the Scarborough General Hospital following the attack and was set to be flown to Trinidad as soon as possible, hospital officials told local media .

It was revealed on Friday evening that his fingers had been "re-attached" but "extensive work" was still needed on one of his legs.

Tobago's chief secretary Farley Augustine said the tourist was "doing well" and was being kept under sedation in the intensive care unit at Scarborough General Hospital .

He said Peter had been holidaying on the island with his wife and his friends and was due to fly home the same day he was attacked.

Mr Augustine explained: "Some re-attachments were done, of fingers for example, and hopefully that will save those fingers.

"We know that there’s significant wounds on one of his legs that cannot be completely closed, but he will require extensive work.

"The task at this time for our health professionals is really to stabilise and ensure that we can save life and limb as much as possible."

There was still "extensive work" to be completed, he said, but "we expect him to recover from the incident".

Mr Augustine continued: "This was his last swim before departing Tobago to the United Kingdom and it’s regrettable that this happened on his very last day vacationing on island."

Witnesses said they believed the bull shark was up to 10 feet long and two feet wide.

The Tobago House of Assembly announced last night that a $10,000 reward would be given to any registered fisherman who managed to capture the shark.

Local media reported on Saturday that the offer had been retracted following some backlash.

One person wrote on Facebook of the bounty offer, before it was retracted: "This is the most asinine thing I have ever seen.

"There will be nothing but only senseless killing of sharks due to this.

"You cannot employ this barbarous method to deal with this situation."

Someone else said: "Seriously…. Sharks are endangered species. This isn’t the solution."

Another person wrote: "What if there are more sharks in the area and a few fishermen make catches.

"They can't tell which specific shark did it."

What makes bull sharks so dangerous?

BULL sharks are the most dangerous sharks in the world, according to experts.

The shark, also known as the Zambezi shark in Africa and Lake Nicaragua shark in Nicaragua, is a species found across the world in warm, shallow ocean waters.

Bull sharks have also been known to swim up into freshwater rivers.

They are dangerous because they are aggressive and because they tend to hunt in waters where people often swim, both during the day and at night.

Humans are not the shark's preferred prey - their diet consists mainly of fish - but they will eat almost anything, including dolphins, sea turtles, and even other sharks.

BULL SHARK KEY INFO

  • Scientific name: Carcharhinus leucas
  • Diet: Carnivore
  • Average lifespan in the wild: 16 years
  • Size: Seven to 11.5ft
  • Weight: 200 to 500lbs

Ten beaches and a marine park were closed by the government of Trinidad and Tobago following the bloody attack at Turtle Beach, along Great Courland Bay, on Friday.

Witnesses said Peter was only in waist-deep water when he was attacked, and that people nearby tried to chase off the predator.

Stephanie Wright, from West Sussex , said: "We saw some people on the beach, and I originally thought the gentleman had had a cardiac arrest, and I thought they were helping him.

"And then I saw someone running down with a towel, and then I saw a dorsal fin come out of the water and thought, 'Oh my God, it's a shark.'

"As it turned, I saw the tail come out as well, as it swam off."

The government said shark sightings were reported in the Grafton area and in the Buccoo Reef Marine Park.

Closing ten beaches - and all coastal areas between the beaches - will allow authorities to investigate the attack and "neutralise" the shark threat if possible, according to officials.

The Tobago House of Assembly said: "The closure of these beaches is in keeping with efforts to ensure the safety of all visitors and the Tobago Emergency Management Agency is actively using unmanned aerial vehicles scans along the coastlines of these areas."

There were 69 unprovoked shark attacks and 22 provoked bites across the world last year, along with 14 fatalities, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

HORROR ATTACKS

The brutal attack off Tobago followed another incident where a teenage boy was mauled by a great white shark while fishing.

The teen was bitten on the leg off a beach in South Australia - and subsequently rushed to hospital - having reeled the beast in from a small fishing boat.

Last Saturday, another  man was rushed to hospital in Australia after falling victim to a shark attack.

The beachgoer was bitten at the Bombie Surfing Spot near Exmouth in Western  Australia  about midday.

Cops said paramedics only learned of the horror attack when the man turned up at a hospital for treatment.

He was immediately admitted and later declared to be in a stable condition.
