Middle East

Latin america, pioneering voyages in far flung lands, out of your comfort zone, off the beaten path.

The beaten path can be hard to escape, but that's never stopped us. In fact, it's the escape that makes these journeys so incredible. Our Epic range of tours features one-of-a-kind cycling adventures in some of the world's most rugged, most wild, and most remote destinations.

Epic cycling adventures

Far Flung Lands

True explorers wouldn't trade a day of sweat and grind for a lounge on the beach. An "easy" destination will never be enough. Whether it's off-roading with nomads on the Mongolian steppe or cruising one of the world's longest single descents in Bhutan. Real adventure awaits those ready to go the distance.

Epic cycling tours

Pioneering Voyages

The most unforgettable experiences are the most hard-won. Pushing over mist-shrouded mountain passes. Fording snow melt streams, bike overhead. Grinding miles of gravel across weathered foothills. Spending the night in a primitive camp under the stars. A rare rendezvous with the members of a seldom seen tribe. The journey will be tough, but the stories alone will be worth it.

This was not a trip for the meek. If you want real adventure on a guided tour, I cannot recommend this one highly enough!

epic bike tours

Winner of a National Geographic Adventures ’50 Tours of a Lifetime’ Award! From Seattle, Washington to East Glacier National Park, Montana, this Epic trip combines portions of three of our favorite tours – the American Alps, the Selkirk Loop and Glacier National Park  – spinning through three states and returning to the start on a one-of-a-kind train ride. Conquer the Cascade, Selkirk and even the Rocky Mountain ranges as you take on this 700+ mile, 10-day extravaganza. On arrival in Whitefish, Montana, hop aboard Amtrak’s Empire Builder train – with private sleeping cars – and head back to Seattle.

National Parks on This Tour: Glacier National Park

*Please note: A sleeping car is purchased at the time of reservation, so for this tour, there is an additional $100 train fee if you transfer or cancel at any time.

This tour is operated under special use permit/s with Glacier National Park. Bicycle Adventures is an equal opportunity provider.

Ride from Seattle to the "Gateway to the American Alps".

– Lunch – Dinner

North Cascades Inn (formerly Buffalo Run Inn)

111 miles (or less)

+3,160 ft / -2,876 ft (or less)

From Lake Union in Seattle, we head northward out of the city on the Burke-Gilman Trail along Lake Washington. Snow-capped mountains begin to press in on both sides of the road as we near the tiny town of Marblemount at the base of the Cascade Mountains – otherwise known as the “Gateway to the American Alps.” Stay tonight at North Cascades Inn (formerly Buffalo Run Inn)

Ride the "American Alps" through North Cascades National Park.

– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Inn at Mazama

+5420 ft / -3638 ft

Today’s route features 5,000 feet of climbing and stunning backdrops as we ride through the heart of North Cascades National Park. See why the region has earned the nickname “The American Alps.” It’s a 50-mile gradual climb on the North Cascades Scenic Highway to Washington Pass. Marvel at the magnificent views before enjoying a 25-mile descent into the Methow Valley, home to the wild-west themed town of Winthrop. Stay tonight amidst the charming setting of the Inn at Mazama .

Ride through the oldest wildlife area in the state into the heartland of Washington.

Peppertree Inn, Omak

+4041 ft / -5185 ft

From Mazama, ride through Okanagan National Forest, skirting the edge of the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area – the oldest wildlife refuge in Washington State – a nearly 19,000-acre park that was originally a mule deer preserve. Cedars, hemlock and Douglas fir give way first to scattered ponderosa pines, then sagebrush and finally wide-open prairies. Today’s ride lands us in Omak, nestled just below the Canadian border on the Okanagan River. Stay at the Peppertree Inn .

Omak, Washington to Colville via historic Kettle Falls.

Comfort Inn, Colville

128 miles (or less)

+8041 ft / -7441 ft (or less)

As you head toward the Selkirk Mountains, you leave the prairie behind and pedal back up into stands of ponderosa pine and aspen. Watch for white-tailed deer, moose, and blue grouse! The route winds through the Sherman Creek Wildlife Area and across Lake Roosevelt, formed by the Grand Coulee Dam . Ride through Kettle Falls , a former rendezvous point and fishing grounds for the Yakama, Nez Perce, Flathead and Blackfeet tribes (to name a few), whose seasonal salmon catches would net up to 3,000 fish per day! Spend tonight at the Comfort Inn in Colville, a one-time trading center for the Upper Columbia region.

Ride from Colville to gorgeous Sandpoint, Idaho, on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille

– Breakfast – Lunch

Edgewater Resort

126 miles (or less)

+5169 ft / -4653 ft (or less)

Today’s ride – all 100+ miles of it – takes you through Colville National Forest to a well-earned 2-night stay at the Edgewater Resort on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, the second largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Dinner is on your own tonight in Sandpoint, ID.

Savor a rest day in a world-class recreation destination: Sandpoint, Idaho

– Breakfast – Dinner

Stay put in Sandpoint – a fun-loving mountain town hugging the shores of sparkling Lake Pend Oreille and surrounded by the Selkirk, Cabinet and Bitterroot mountain ranges, Ride, hike, play golf, go fly-fishing or try some rock-climbing – take your pick (not included). Or, if you can’t stay off the bike and you want a great view, try the 12-mile ride (climb) up to Schweitzer Ski Resort, Idaho’s second largest ski area. Lunch is on your own.

Cross the Idaho panhandle and visit magnificent Kootenai Falls.

Montana Country Inn

98 miles (or less)

+3349 ft / -3332 ft (or less)

Finish crossing the Idaho panhandle en route to the historic mining and timber town of Libby, Montana. Mountains and rivers and forests abound. Visit Kootenai Falls – a must see! This sacred site to the Kootenai Indians is one of the largest remaining free-flowing falls in the northwest. Stay at the Montana Country Inn .

Cycle to Whitefish, Montana, gateway to Glacier National Park.

Pine Lodge on Whitefish River

+5,484 ft / -5,001 ft

Pedal 50 miles of shoreline along Lake Koocanusa (can you figure out how it got its name?) in Kootenai National Forest. From Eureka, MT, shuttle the last miles of busy highway to Whitefish – gateway to world famous Glacier National Park! Rest up for the climb at Pine Lodge on Whitefish River near the heart of town.

An epic finale on Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Empire Builder (Amtrak)

+7,176 ft / -5,570 ft

Ride up and over the Continental Divide on the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road to Logan Pass and descend to East Glacier. If you haven’t ridden “GTSR”, the signature route through Glacier National Park, you’re in for a treat. From fjord-like Lake McDonald, the road climbs gently. As you get higher and higher, the views unfold: alpine meadows and azure lakes, snow covered peaks skirted by fields of wildflowers and washed by waterfalls, the occasional bighorn sheep or mountain goat. Utterly spectacular. You’ve got a 6:00 pm train to catch, though, so sorry… no dawdling!

Wake up on the train. Watch the scenery spin past as you head back to Seattle. We'll miss you!

– Breakfast

Having caught the train yesterday, you’ll have spent the evening in the dining car reminiscing and relaxing before retiring to your private sleeper car. Wake up in the morning, have breakfast (still on the train) and arrive in Seattle at about 10:30 am for your return trip home.

Mini Epics – Bite-Sized Adventures

Mini epic experiences – immersive cycling for the time-poor.

Our Mini Epics are a select list of mini-tours that fit within the framework of our longer Epic Experiences . They are designed to offer the same immersive cycling experience that can be found on the longer options. The Mini Epic roster caters for the time-poor and those who wish to get a taster of the tours we run before committing to a full Epic. A key element of the tours listed as Mini Epics is that they offer convenient gateway and exit points. We have also focussed on creating tour experiences that fulfill the remit of being standalone tours in their own right rather than just segments of a longer tours and as such, they all work well as Custom Tours for private groups .

epic bike tours

Our Epic Tours offer 7 or more days of incredible cycling and are designed to provide a full end-to-end vacation experience. In addition to amazing cycling these tours offer sightseeing both on and off the bike, and include activities such as local experiences, points of interest, museums, group dinners and socials, and much more.

I'm retired after many years as an auditor for the State of Alaska. I been on 47 bicycle tours mostly in the United States, all in North America. They've varied from overnights to 8 week cross-country (USA) trips. Early trips were self-supported, but recent ones have almost all been supported. I look forward meeting new people, seeing new places, seeing some great new scenery, and to the challenge. "I'm not slow—I just enjoy the ride a lot longer than you." http://yehudamoon.com/20120328/

This is a great chance to ride with some old Boet from the RSA.I have only been in this part of the country while travelling in a car so it will be great to slow down and see the area.

As a tour leader, I love the daily challenges, and ever changing worlds we are all so lucky to travel through. Getting a diverse group of cyclists, with different backgrounds, and goals across a continent is a rare thrill that makes life at home feel a bit pedestrian! The best feeling on tour is making a tough day go smoothly, and to surprise the riders with something unexpected or memorable along the way.

I live on the west coast of Canada, in Victoria, a quiet town which can seem like an extreme contrast to many of the places I tour with TDA. In the past I have done a number of solo cycling trips, as well as exploring by motorcycles when time was more limited. Over the years of travelling though, I've realized how much I enjoy the camaraderie of travelling with a group to share experiences and make memories with. My future goals for personal travel at the moment are a bit different, and are based around the sea. In the next couple years I want to go by boat to the extreme north of Canada, in the hopes of exploring places impossible to reach in any other manner.

It's hard to nail down a single memorable experience from all my trips with TDA, but I most often think back to the experiences of Central Asia, and discovering the beauty of the Pamir Mountains for the first time. At one particular high altitude camp in Tajikistan, I remember taking a hike with a group of riders up a steep 5000m peak adjacent to the camp. As we neared the top, we found ourselves unable to safely make it past 5000m due to a loose rock scramble for the last 20 meters. Disappointed, we turned around and witnessed a flock of Marco Polo Sheep running along the ridge just below us, making time before the sun set.

If I were to make a single suggestion to a future TDA rider, it would be to slow down, and keep a camera close at hand. The best stories at the end of the trip are not normally those of the speediest cyclist.

This is my fourth TDA tour - did North America, South America, and India. Looking forward to this part of the world and reuniting with some old friends from previous tours. I currently ride with a full carbon moutain bike setup w/ 29 inch wheels and 2.35/2.2 sized tires and a 1x11 setup. It worked really well in South America where there was a good combination of pavement and dirt/gravel roads. Expecting something similar with the Bamboo tour.

The draw for the Silk Route was going through Mongolia . This new tour in the Himalayas is an area that I have not travel to before. Looking forward to the experience and meeting up again with friends from past tours. Wow so excited, a space came available for Journey to the East 2, so here I go again. A mountainbiker at heart I just love cycling and being outdoors. I've raced a lot of long distance races and done a few solo trips. I run a little fatbike guiding and rental business in Norway. I live in Norway and work as ski-instructor, fitness- and personal-trainer, fatbike- ski and snowshoe guide. The NAE 2013 was a life-changing experience. Loved it!

I retired early and have enjoyed my bike riding a lot since then, so I am looking forward to another challenging trip. I have enjoyed riding long distance events for all my years of cycling. I have completed classics such as Land's End to John O'Groats in the UK and also various Audax events from 200K to 1400K. I have also raced in events of 12 & 24 Hours. In the last few years I have taken part in The Andes Trail and a journey across West Africa, both with another company similar to TDA. I did the North American Epic with TDA in 2013. Also Oh! Canada with TDA in 2017. In 2018 I rode from Lhasa to Timbuktu over The Himalayas with another cycle touring company based in the UK. So looking forward to meeting some more intrepid riders on the journey through Europe.

I probably like cycling more than cycling likes me. That means I will probably be at the rear of the group but I have completed every trip I have been on. I enjoy eating enormous amounts of food, cycling means I do not gain weight while eating. I also speak a little of any language in any part of the world we are likely to travel in.

I live in Vancouver, British Columbia. “‘Happiness is only real when shared’: I think this counts for a whole spectrum of experiences and emotions—pain, hardship, excitement, joy, for instance—and explains why sharing an adventure or journey with a group makes it so very real!”

Who would have thought that growing up on a farm and a career in rural healthcare would prepare me for a job like my job at TDA? I always had the desire to travel and even though I thought working here would be too good to actually come true when I sent in my job application, here I am, six tours and 28 countries later. I’ve learned more about the world and myself then I ever expected.

With so many incredible memories—and so much food shared, so many friends made along the way—it will take me years to process everything I’ve experienced courtesy of TDA. Highlights of my travels so far include finishing the North American Epic (NAE) in Mexico City on the Day of the Dead, cycling Central Asia’s Pamir Highway, Abdul’s pilaf in the parking lot, Colombia, pan con chicharron, Patagonia, a massive thunder storm in Zambia, Hami melon, Madagascar, Samarkand, walnut and honey spread on fresh bread and topped with whipped yak cream, eaten in a warm yurt… and the list goes on! It’s amazing to realize that everything I experience with TDA will have an impact on my life long after these adventures are over.

One adventure I don’t expect to have again is the one I had in Mexico, when we discovered Hurricane Patricia was heading right straight at us. Monitoring the storm’s progress through the night—from stage 4 to stage 5—seemed so unreal. By 5:00 a.m., CNN was calling Patricia the strongest hurricane ever measured on planet earth. A few hours later, we loaded all bikes, riders, kit and crew onto an extra van and bus … and took off, tails between our legs, because Patricia was shaping up to be a beast! By nightfall we were safe and sound in the heart of tequila country, and, as Patricia lost most of her fury at landfall, the party at our lodgings ramped up.

There are so many wonderful aspects to working with TDA but key amongst them are travelling with purpose, meeting people from all over—and the food!

From Shawnigan Lake BC, near Victoria, I will be 70 by the time I get on my bike in Srinagar. In 2014 I rode the Silk Route from Tehran to Istanbul and returned in 2016 to ride from Beijing to Almaty. In 2015 I rode from home across my province to connect with the North American Epic and some riders and staff from SR 2014 - what a hoot! Now I'm returning to ride the Himalayas and a Silk Route reunion - at the time of this profile update eight Silk Route 2014/16 tour riders will be riding. I'm excited by the notion of riding with a new tribe across northern India and Nepal. Certainly much more exciting than doing the same ol' 50-150 km rides around familiar roads at home. See y'all soon. Cheers! Mike

I’m a recreation cyclist who passion is discovering new places and cultures from the back roads of the world. I have cycled Malaysia, Vietnam, Morocco, and Ethiopia, much of Europe, as well as significant portions of the American West, including Alaska. Last year, I celebrated the first day of my retirement, by beginning a solo adventure from Venice Beach to my 50th High School Reunion in Topeka, KS. Through heat, followed by torrential monsoons, I finished 25 days later “one happy camper.” Twenty-five years ago I was fortunate to help start a ski school, the U.S. Adaptive Recreation Center at Big Bear, for the disabled of Southern California and Nevada. To help support the school, each October we cycle 350 miles from Big Bear to Mammoth in an adventure we call Peak-To-Peak. I hope many of my new friends from the Silk Route will join me.

There are few experiences in life that compare to riding my bike through beautiful landscapes in faraway lands. Beyond working for TDA as Accountant and Tour Support, I've been a client 7 times now. All these journeys have had their magical moments. Spinning through Iran - pinch me, I'm dreaming!, across Turkey - where east meets west, down Chile's remote Carretera Austral, and into the canyonlands of the American southwest, to name a few. Completing the Tour d'Afrique is another. And of course, meeting our amazing clients from around the world and the "salt of the earth" local people along the way. I rode Hanoi to Bangkok 2 years ago and now its time to carry on down the Malay peninsula from Bangkok to Singapore. See you in November!

“A mountain biker at heart, but bike touring pays the bills!”

Most of the time, I work at the TDA head office in Toronto as the IT Manager, but I also sometimes work on the tours as needed, either as a guide or a bike mechanic. I landed here because my uncle mentioned to me he had a friend—Henry—with this crazy bike company, the friend and I met, and the rest is history.

I studied Business and IT at university, and my previous job was at an exotic car dealership. In my own time, I do more mountain biking than touring, and usually find nice trails to ride wherever our tours take me. Outside of TDA, I’ve cycled across Europe and half of Canada.

The Pamir Highway was a peak experience for me! As a mountain biker, I always love the roughest, crappiest roads our tours travel on. My favourite day of the entire Silk Route was actually the day that most of the other riders thought was the worst—it ended with a long switchback descent on a rough gravel road.

Every day brings a new challenge to solve, whether here in the office or on the side of a road in the desert. I really value that element of my job and relish it immensely.

“Good afternoon, my dear dream merchants."—TDA rider arriving at the office in Toronto for a visit.

I started with TDA as a local cyclist in Brazil during the Vuelta Sudamericana in 2009. I had just finished a long solo cycling trip through South America and I was invited to join the first couple of sections of the tour to help with the language. Once I was back home I started volunteering for the company, doing everything I could to spread the word about TDA. Eventually they decided that it was only fair to hire me.

It’s really hard to choose a place or a tour that was special, but both scouting and leading our first Trans-Oceania tour was certainly out of the ordinary. I had ten weeks to scout the whole thing from Medan to Sydney and spent nine of them trying to wrap Indonesia.

I recall a particular day in Indonesia that the riders later named "The Wall". Henry and I had been discussing avoiding a stretch of highway we weren’t happy with. We’d seen an alternative on the map but the road was privately owned by industry and we were having trouble getting the getting the permits we needed to use it. When we arrived, we saw local people using the road, which was a trail, so we decided to have lunch there to give me time to scope it out. A local guy on a motorbike took me up the steep trail to check it, flag it, and take notes and waypoints. At some stage, the trail got so steep that the motorbike couldn’t get both of us up, so I walked the rest of the way before calling staff at the lunch spot to tell them the route worked and to give them directions. It was a bit improvised and out of the ordinary but it was functional.

Because I knew what this steep route would put the riders through, I decided to wait and touch base with the first to complete it to see what they had to say about the experience. The first couple of cyclists showed up with big smiles on their faces and said they’d loved it but that they didn't think I should wait for everyone because there was sure to be some aggravated rider who would probably punch me. I decided to stay and wait for that punch, and while a few people did arrive looking ready to smack me, the angriest of them all actually just gave me a big hug. After a good shower and some good food everyone was in fine spirits; in the end, this day turned out to be a rider favourite of the whole trip.

Working with TDA is really the perfect job. Not only do I love both travel and bicycles, I also love watching people achieve things of which they never imagined themselves capable. Finally, this job allows me to share these loves with a wonderfully diverse group of people.

Hi there! My name is Katherine and I'll be joining the NAE from Montana to Panama City as a cycling medic. Currently I'm working as a Registered Nurse up in the Canadian Arctic in a small city called Iqaluit. After six months in the arctic I'm looking forward to the warmer weather down in Mexico. I have some experience with long distance physical pursuits, having completed the Appalachian Trail in 2016 and the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018 - both taking 5-6 months to complete. And While I grew up mountain biking for fun or just to get into town, I'm new to the world of long distance cycling. I'm looking forward to testing myself and meeting all of you!

Carolina Ceravolo

Tour Leader Trainee Yuma to Panama City

There are many things I love about my job, but my favorite is to dive deep in the route to learn all about its features, profile, geographical and historical facts, and to reunite with the team and riders to explore the journey together. All of us are very privileged to be able to explore the world at the pace of a bicycle; to really be present and see, feel, hear and smell all the environments we are cycling through. I love to keep the riders focused on their journey, motivating them to see the magic and the beauty of what we have the opportunity to be doing. I like to be the bridge to their experience, helping them face the challenges and persevere.

I currently live in Belgium. I have been traveling through all hidden corners of the American continent and Europe for the last 10 years where I learnt about its history and culture. I'm a certified nature and history guide in Mexico, specialized in Mayan History. I'm also a technical cave diver and worked with cave exploration in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, where I lived for 9 years. Here I developed skills in safety and risk management, which is one of my favorite aspects of the job as a tour leader: to be able to foresee hazards and plan ways to mitigate them.

Cycling is my favorite thing to do, so in 2017 I did a solo self supported bike trip for 4 months from Mexico to Brazil. This was when I decided to change the course of my career from guiding nature and cave diving tours to working with cycling tour companies, realizing I could transfer my skills in safety and risk assessment from cave diving into leading cycling tours/expeditions.

My tip for cyclists joining our tours is to trully allow yourself to be out of your comfort zone and to enjoy being there. Traveling by bike is physically challenging, but having a strong, open and adventurous mind is what you need to take the most out of it. Learn to appreciate the differences. To think as a group and to be realistic about what crossing a country - or a few of them - by bicycle implies. It's a unique and a massive achievement for everyone involved in it, don't forget that! Have fun, and smile always.

I just love Africa. I love introducing Africa to people that have never been here or have never done anything like this. You can just see their eyes open, and all of their prejudices drop as they ride through it. The bike is just such an amazing way to do it, I’ve done tours in the past where the passengers are in the vehicle with me, and it’s just not the same. [On a TDA tour] you stop at coke stops all the time, and are constantly interacting with your environment. You often rely on locals for something like water, that interaction is absolutely essential to the tours. In the end, it’s one giant road trip with people that become your family. I love camping. You get addicted to the camping lifestyle, to see the sunrise and sunset everyday. You’re in the mix, you’re hearing the hyena’s and the owls. The amount of times I’ve had elephants come through our campsites in Africa, it’s magic.

I have been leading tours in Africa for over a decade, but I started at TDA as a chef. I love shopping at local markets in Africa, the interactions with the mama’s, and just buying everything they’re selling in bulk.

I love the behind the scenes moments. Everything it takes to keep the show on the road. Trucks getting stuck, and us having to try and pull vehicles out with help from the locals and their tractors. I remember another time on the North American epic, on the Arctic section, we had such a hard time trying to source water, that we sent up the drone to find the local water tank in a little First Nations village. It’s stuff like that that I love, the behind-the-scenes challenges. I like the spontaneity, the natural chaos of Africa.

[As a tip for future participants of our expedition tours], get comfortable with all your camping gear. Set up your tent first, maybe even sleep in it for a night or two in your apartment. Test your mattress, take it up and down a couple of times, because you’ll be doing that a lot. People don’t always realise this. You’ll be coming into camp after a long ride, and having to set your tent up and then tearing it down again in the middle of the night, just day after day after day, it’s relentless. So packing well and being comfortable with your set-up is absolutely essential in my opinion.

This tour will be my first on an e-bike. My superpower is finding coffee stops.

Married to Tim Sole, who is also on the tour. This will be my sixth TDA trip having previously done the Bamboo Road, part of the Transeuropa, the Odyssey, the Pub Ride and 80% of the North American Epic (Jasper to Panama). Special thanks to the TDA and their amazing, dedicated staff for making such trips,. and the quote above, possible- there is an incredible amount of work that goes into scouting, logistics, bookings, vehicles, staffing food, etc etc. Nobody does it better than the TDA, No one runs tours like they do on roads less travelled. I’ve got an itch to travel via cycle across swathes of this earth... and am joining this tour as an experiment in handing the planning and support details over to the pros. Surely there are advantages in both columns, so it comes down to this; which, for me, is more satisfying/enriching/‘wow-ing’/fun ; Tour? Or, doing my own thing? I’m a great fan of the Earth ....mountains...grasslands...undersea wilderness...desert......Equally appreciative of living rough or living with luxuries... I enjoy my delightful well-fledged sons, reading...nature (not excluding human nature), lounging around, good friends, good food, good wine, good conversation, film, jazz, blues, classical, swing dancing, spontaneous adventure. I can't carry a tune, so if I'm singing you might want earplugs. Finally retiring this June, I’ll gift myself with you all + tda North America See ya in July....

A busy year. Fist we want to do the South Korea Japan tour and later this year italia. As long we feel strong enough to do this kind of tours we want to do this. It is very nice to see the world from your bike .

Together with my husband herman I did several tours through Europe. Last year we did together cross America. It was a new experience for us cycling lonely roads . But we had a very nice group and looking back we are homesick of making such a tour. Because my husband has his 65 years birthday a diside to give him this present. We hope to see a lot of nice nature and animals. Off course we also looking forward to meet the group and have lots of fun together.

Also across Europe from the Atlantic to Belgrade on the EV6. Last year (2018), the moment I retired (!), I cycled 3,200 kms right around France (Vive la France! Wow!) . In 2014, I cycled from Kathmandu to the southern tip of India, and crossed South America from Quito to Usuhaia. Last year, I cycled with friends from Myanmar to New Zealand, through the countries of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia. I am from Vancouver, BC, retired June of 2012. I discovered bicycling when I was 42 and long distance cycling when I was 59, so I had to retire to make time for the touring. I have been on six other TDA tours (Amber Route 2010, Bamboo 2013, and South American 2015, TransEuropa 1016, Tour d'Afrique 2017, Silk Route 2018 and North American Epic 2019) as well as several other long distance rides. For me cycling is mostly about the bike, but the chance to see new places and new cultures is right up there, along with one of the biggest pleasures, which is the people - meeting new ones and meeting up with ones from previous rides.

What I love most about being a Tour Leader is traveling the world, riding bikes, and meeting new and interesting people on every trip. What more could you ask for?

I started working at bike shops and as a bike courier while at university. The income from these jobs allowed me to plan my own cycling trips during school breaks. Following university, I spent two years working with an aid organization in Guinea, where I was surprised to see a TDA tour passing through rural West Africa. Several years and one pandemic later, I found myself guiding bike tours around the US, dreaming about even greater adventures.

One of my most memorable experiences from a TDA tour was in Tuktoyaktuk at the start of the North American Epic. I went for a swim in the Arctic Ocean and I remember thinking "Would I ever have this chance again?" But when I waded into the water, I realized something wasn't right: the water wasn't cold. It felt like a heated pool and it ended up being an unpleasant swim. My mind was occupied with what I had read about rising sea temperatures while every inch of my skin above water was attacked by mosquitoes. But I remember the visceral feeling of "so, this is what the Arctic Ocean really is."

My advice for anyone planning to join a TDA tour is to read a book, fiction or nonfiction, set in your tour's destination. Also, try learning a few phrases in the local language, and don't forget your towel!

Alexander Kling

I am an actuary. In my daily business, I am used to deal with risk and I am usually on the safe side. I’m joining the last part of North American Epic 2022. I hope I will be able to enjoy while trying to survive. I did my calculations, and I can say that the chances for both, enjoying and surviving, are pretty good.

Christine Bierling

For living, I try to optimize the financials as a management accountant. For fun, I try to optimize the time I spend outdoors. I’m currently on a sabbatical. Tour d’ Afrique is one part of a long and active journey through different parts of the world. I’m excited about it.

Michael Holley

In my normal life, I'm a public defender, but I'm looking forward to learning something more about bike touring.

Joining the Tour d’Afrique in 2007 was the beginning of my love of cycle touring. Since, I’ve cycled independently in Europe, New Zealand, Middle East, North America, TDA Silk Road 2016, TDA Madagascar 2019 and TDA Himalayas 2019. I also sail, trek, climb and ski long distances and remotely. Looking forward to exploring with like-minded friends!

Alastair Wilson

I'm a high school teacher taking a career break for 6 months. I teach Business and Economics. I'm naturally very adventurous and culturally inquisitive. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

So now its time to complete the second half of the contient.

I am an (almost) 54 years old Italian man that loves cycling and traveling. I have been able to retire at an early age in order to purse these two interests, and TDA expeditions where one of the reasons why I really wanted to gain full control of my schedule while still relatively young. I am and have always been single and have no kids.

Stephen Owen

Cycling since school age chasing buses to school, and now aged 57, I have stepped up cycling in the last 10 years with weekend rides and endurance 300/500km rides in 24hrs, wisdom/body is now telling me that multi-day riding is more fun... More recently cycled across Atlas mountains North Africa, Sri Lanka, and recently TDA Madagascar. The Tour d'Afrique 2023 trip will be exciting and push me to the limits and beyond, TDA Madagascar May 2019 recharged my batteries for a few years and this trip is long overdue and will scratch the itch again. It always brings a smile to my face once I've sat down at end of the day with coffee in hand and consider how lucky I am.

Sabine Hoffmann

My husband and I live in Berlin and Italy with - sometimes - our two kids, who live actually in London and the US. We like to do sports of any kind and decided to do this bicycle trip for having fun, learn more about foreign areas and having some nature experience. I don`t like social media, which does not mean that I am not a social person.

Looking forward to catching up with riders from previous rides and meeting new riders.

To Travel is to Live (at rejse er at leve) were famous words by the Danish fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen. My version goes – To Bike is to Live. I love to bike. I bike more now age 65 than I did when I was 35. I’m not as strong as I was at 45 but I still enjoy a good biketour. Hans Christan Andersen was a seasoned traveler, however, I’m not. I am a comfort rider and have never been outside Denmark to bike. So, this TDA North American Epic is way way out of my comfort zone. Look forward to meeting you all.

Karen Bartels

I enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, canoeing, road and gravel biking, and camping. I dabble in pottery and photography. I am a semi-retired college instructor, teaching geology and mathematics part-time.

Patricia Long

I am a veterinarian still practicing in Southern California, USA. I have been an avid outdoor enthusiast all my life and enjoy kayaking, skiing, camping, exploring etc. My youth was spent skiing, on a motorcycle (dirt bike) and horseback riding as our area was poor for bicycles. Lots of thorny plants = many flat tires. I came to bicycling later in life and found I enjoy longer rides and tours. Did the western half of the Northern Tier USA as my longest ride and really enjoyed just getting out on my bike and riding. I have not traveled much out of the US and Canada. Went to NZ and Austria hiking. Loved exploring small villages and enjoyed the beer for sure. I will be riding w/ my partner Karen Bartels on this trip. I am really looking forward to good riding, good company and the thrill of a new adventure!

Retired in 2021 and completed TDA Ruta Maya 2023. Also a few shorter supported tours in UK, Europe, Mongolia, North & South America over the last 5 years. Enjoy road biking, gravel biking and bike packing trips in UK. Love using my bike to get from A to B. Lived in Scotland for over 30 years with Scottish husband John (also joining trip) but I am originally from England. We have 3 grown up girls - only the eldest gets the cycling thing …..

Cyclist since 1987 after having been a runner, I traveled mainly in France and a little in Europe, in 1993, I made my first trip ouside the european continent, it was Colorado's turn. In 2018 i started a world tour by bike....The tour d'Afrique is one of them.

Glen Greedy

Hi fellow cyclists on this tour!! I’m a baby boomer, semi-retired physiotherapist & outdoor enthusiast! My favorite outdoor activity is riding my bike all year round. I celebrated my 50th birthday by cycling in New Zealand for 5 months, solo & unsupported. It’s been over 10 years now since I’ve done an extended multi-day tour so really looking forward to SAE 2022

I'm a nomad and spend as much time as possible traveling. With TDA I've done the Tour d'Afrique, Magical Madagascar and the Orient Express. I’ve become a TDA junkie and am signed up for lots more trips. Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones on the next tour!

I am a real estate broker living in Toronto, Canada. I love to travel and I think cycling is best way to do it. I conquered the Orient express and had a blast. TDA has the right balance of distance, and days off, however the hotels could be chosen a little more wisely. Looking forward to meeting new friends and some previous ones. Andes will be painful, but a good steak and Malbec will make up for it! Jay Ozturk

I’m Raul from Lisbon, Portugal. After a career in banking, I’ve retired in 2022 in order to enjoy life at a slower pace. Cycling different regions of the world is part of that plan. I’m looking forward to meeting all fellow riders.

I enjoy bicycling, camping, and hiking. Looking forward to sharing adventures on this tour with new and old friends.

I am a crazy 58 year old lady from wonderful Switzerland. I do a lot of sports and I love to travel. Normally you will find me in the gorgeous Swiss Alps trailrunning, cross country skiing, hiking or cycling up the passes. Now one of my biggest dream comes true: My husband joins me on this bike trip. I have cycled already in the alps, the dolomites and the pyrenees. In 2010 I was on a Biketour in Southamerica and cycled up and down "The Andes". In 2014 I joined TDA for „The Hippie Trail“ in magical India and 2019 „The Bamboo Road“ in Asia.

Christian Degen

In terms of riding a bike, my wife Lea is far ahead of me. But now I catch up ... She managed to get me excited about exploring different parts of the world by bike.

Adrian Amelse

Retired. An avid cyclist with a passion to explore the world, taking the road less traveled. In 2018 and 2019, I completed the U.S. Coast 2 Coast Southern Tier and the Japan Samurai Epic. Since then, I have cycled from London to Rome, Barcelona to Rome, Venice to Athens, and Missoula to Jasper. I look forward to meeting the group and cycling the North American Epic with all of you :-)

ian priestner

I joined the Africa 2020 tour in Nairobi and three riding days later the Tour was over due to Coronavirus. In that short time I became addicted despite not being in a tent since my 20s. I also cycled the 23 TDA sections from Arusha to Lilongwe. I'm sort of retired with family commitments though occasionally I'm allowed out.. Hopefully see you all later this year

Nina Billenstein Schriver

I am Nina from Denmark, 66 years old. I am married to Soren who is also on the Silk Route tour. I am still active working with a program I have startet in 2007 - WAWCAS - Women at Work Children at School - an entrepreneurship program for women living in poverty in Nepal. Living in Nepal several months a year I have had the opportunity to mountainbike there in the beautiful mountains. I am roadbiking and mountainbiking in Denmark and in several other countries around the world. My picture is taken in fantastic Georgia, which we are so lucky to experience again on our Silk Route tour. I am looking very much forward to the tour through fantastic countries and on a historical route together with all of you being a part of the group.

Barry Smith

I love to jump on my bicycle and explore different places, meet people, and experience new things. Hi all committed and prospective fellow Orient Express participants, I hail from Canberra, Australia - though the family "home town" is Darwin, NT. I've participated in a number of "Big Bike Rides" in Australia - But they are small stuff (in terms of duration) compared to the Orient Express. Aside from recreational road riding I also play at mountain biking (for fitness). I work for an international development non-government organisation - 23 years plus now. Motivation for ride is mainly to be able to say I've ridden from Paris to Istanbul! NB. Despite career/professional expertise I'm linguistically (outside of English) and directionally challenged

Adventurous Cycling Trips in Colorado – Create an “EPIC” ride!

We have taken two of our Colorful Colorado Rockies routes and our most recent addition, “Colorado FUNDO”, and combined them all, creating 17 days of incredible and challenging rides. The  Epic Colorado Bike Tour  provides a few of Colorado’s most iconic climbs: Independence, Tennessee, Vail, Ute, Hoosier, Keebler, McClure Passes, The Colorado Monument, Grande Mesa and Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

Our start up leg of the Epic Colorado Bike Tour is your time to start a soft warm up or hit it hard. Our Colorado Fundo stage keeps us in Frisco for four days. There you can opt for short or long routes, daily. Or choose non-cycling options instead.

The second stage of Epic Colorado Bike Tour provides a few of Colorado’s most iconic climbs: Independence, Tennessee, Vail, Keebler, McClure Passes. You will experience some of the most photographed mountain scenery in the world, while in the Aspen High Country. You’ll enjoy small resort towns, climb a dozen of Colorado’s highest passes and cruise past dramatic canyon walls.

Our third stage of Epic Colorado starts in the central Colorado mountains and includes Glenwood Springs, Crested Butte, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Grand Mesa, wine country of Palisade and The Colorado National Monument.. We have even been known to be non-invited participants in a local cattle drive while enroute.

To make your ride safe and enjoyable, your guides have 45 years of experience and knowledge of the Colorado routes. In addition to cycling, we have 3 partial days built in so that you might enjoy activities like fly fishing, kayaking, rafting, hiking and spa experiences.

You must cancel at least 48 hours before the published start time to get a full refund or ask to move your booking to a later date. If the booking is canceled less than 48 hours before the published start time, no refund will be issued, and you are no longer allowed to reschedule unless you have availed of our Flexible Rebooking option. To cancel a booking, you may send an email to [email protected] .

Our Flexible Rebooking option gives you added flexibility on your booking. For an additional $10 per person per tour, you'll have up to 2 hours from your tour's start time to change your booking. The Flexible Rebooking add-on you purchased allows you a single instance of rescheduling within 48 hours before the tour. Flexible Rebooking is priced and applied to each guest on each tour.

Equipment Damage Protection gives you full coverage on any accidental damage to the bike and any other equipment provided to you during the tour. As long as you handle the bike with reasonable care (for example: you don't perform stunts or acrobatics with the bike, or leave it parked in the middle of the road to be hit by a passing car), you can rest easy that any damage to the bike or our equipment is covered by the add-on insurance.

Our regular tours run even if there is only one guest booked but we may cancel tours due to extreme weather conditions or unforeseen events. We will do our best to determine any cancellations as soon as possible and immediately inform customers via email of any changes to the event. Should any of our tours be canceled for these reasons, we will give you the options to receive a full refund, reschedule on a different date, or pay for the remaining slots needed to reach the minimum number of participants.

Please make sure that you:

  • Have signed the tour waiver and release form for you and everyone in your party. You can find the link to the tour waiver here .
  • Are dressed appropriately for the weather.
  • Wear comfortable closed-toe footwear. No flip-flops, please.
  • If on tour involving food, please inform the guide of any severe allergies or dietary restrictions.
  • Use the bathroom before the tour.

We will provide:

  • Properly sanitized riding helmet
  • Bottled water
  • Disposable rain poncho (when needed)

It is important to arrive at least 15 minutes before the published start time. Your guide will use the 15 minutes to do a briefing on the tour, teach you how to operate the e-bike, and let you do a test ride to ensure you can ride the e-bike safely. Guests who arrive late or have trouble handling the e-bike will not be allowed to join the tour.

No. You don't need a license to ride an e-bike in Austin.

Yes, you don't typically need any prior experience. If you know how to ride a regular bike, transitioning to our e-bikes should be pretty easy. If you have trouble using our e-bike in some unlikely event, your guide will advise you not to proceed with the tour.

Our e-bikes can carry up to 325 lbs, including the rider's weight.

We designed our tours to be enjoyed by guests 16 years or older. We indicate the age requirement for each tour on our website. Minors at least 16 years of age are allowed to ride, provided they are accompanied and have express written consent from a parent or guardian, and they are tall enough to ride the bike safely - 4'8" for the Step-Thru and 5'1" for the Step-Over e-bike model.

Our tours always start and end in our store location at 1114 West 5th Street, Unit 201, Austin TX 78703 . You'll have access to vehicle parking at the back of the building. If you want a different start and end location for your group, you may contact our team at [email protected] to arrange a private tour.
