Exuma, Bahamas Travel Guide: What to Know Before Visiting

exuma bahamas trip cost

The Exumas are a chain of 365 islands and cays that stretch approximately 130 miles in the Caribbean Sea. At 37 miles long, Great Exuma is the largest island in the Exumas (61 square miles) and features charming colonial architecture, colorful houses, and a laid-back atmosphere. The Ferry Bridge connects Great Exuma to its smaller and quieter counterpart, Little Exuma (12 square miles), home to Tropic of Cancer Beach (AKA Pelican Beach) which is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the Bahamas. Visitors to Exuma can indulge in a variety of water activities such as snorkeling, diving, sailing, and swimming with the famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay. There’s a reason they call Exuma “Paradise in Paradise”! And while there’s no question that Exuma boasts some of the most breathtaking natural beauty in all of the Caribbean, the thing that outshines the scenery is the people. Exuma locals are some of the kindest, most helpful, and friendliest people that you will ever have the pleasure of encountering. Pair the hospitable locals with its untouched landscapes and idyllic charm, and Exuma makes the ultimate paradise for those seeking tranquility and adventure amidst some of the most stunning scenery in the Caribbean.

Where to fly into:

Surprisingly, there are 12 airports/airstrips in the Exumas, but unless you’re flying on a small, private plane or jet, there’s really only one option when traveling to Exuma, and that is Exuma International Airport (GGT) located on Great Exuma Island. With flights offered by major airlines like American, Delta, and Air Canada as well as boutique airlines like Western Air, Bahamasair, Silver Airways, and Sky Bahamas, GGT is the perfect access point to Great Exuma and beyond.

How to pay for things:

First off, cash is king in the Bahamas! Credit cards are not always accepted, so be sure that you have an ample amount of cash on you before setting out each day. Now that that’s out of the way, the official currency used in Exuma is the Bahamian Dollar, but the US Dollar is widely accepted. And while the exchange rate is one-to-one, that does not mean that you can expect to pay the same amount for items in the Bahamas as you would back in your home country (the US for us). Just like many Caribbean islands, almost everything has to be imported which makes everything more expensive… Especially food, and that includes groceries. If you’re coming from the US (lower 48), you can expect to spend about twice as much on food than you typically would in the US.

How to get around:

If you plan to explore the island beyond your resort or vacation rental (which we 100% recommend), then you’ll likely want to rent a car. If you do decide to rent a car, it is important to note that in the Bahamas they drive on the left side of the road (opposite for us Americans). And while it’s really not that difficult to get used to, it can be quite intimidating. So, if driving on the left side of the road sounds a little too stressful, then the next best way to get around is by taxi albeit expensive. Like anything, each option has its pros and cons but there’s really no wrong way to explore the Exumas!

If you want to take your Exuma adventures up a notch, you can rent a boat to get out and see this beautiful paradise as it’s meant to be… From the water! And just like the rental cars, if driving a boat and navigating the ever-changing waterways of the Exumas is a little too far out of your comfort zone (which is totally understandable), then you can always charter a boat with a driver/captain for your visit!

Travel To Exuma, The Bahamas

Exuma is a district of The Bahamas , consisting of over 365 islands, also called cays. The largest of the cays is Great Exuma, and this is the most popular “home base” for exploring the region. This is one of my favorite Caribbean destinations, so here’s everything you need to know to travel to Exuma, The Bahamas.

The Best Things To Do In The Bahamas

The Exuma islands are known as the “Adventure Isles” because they’re famous for their water sports, especially snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, and boating. So if you want an active Bahamas trip where you’re not staying at your resort all day every day, then Exuma is for you.

Here’s how to travel to Exuma, The Bahamas!

page-divider-blue

Getting Here and Around

The main airport in this region is Exuma International Airport (GGT) on Great Exuma. This is a tiny airport – there are two gates that share a waiting room and no food or drink options inside. There’s an airport “lounge” (which is really just a local restaurant) where you can kill some time before your flight across the street.

If you’re staying on one of the other Exuma islands, you’ll probably take an inter-island flight to Staniel Cay, where you’ll take a boat to other islands.

Your transportation options on Great Exuma are hiring a taxi or renting a car. Taxi rides can be very expensive, so if you want to leave your resort more than a couple of times during your trip, renting a car might save you money. When considering renting a car, be aware that you’ll be driving on the left side of the road.

If you’re staying on another Exuma island, you won’t need a rental car.

Where To Stay

Great Exuma is where most people stay when they visit Exuma because it has the most accessible and affordable accommodations. But there are resorts (and even private islands!) you can stay on throughout the cays.

Grand Isle Resort And Residences (pictured above) is my favorite hotel on Great Exuma. This all-villa resort has one of the best beaches on the island, two restaurants, a tiki bar, a main pool, an adults-only pool, golf carts, and complimentary water sports.

I’ve rounded up the best hotels in Exuma for every budget and preference, and there are also some incredible vacation homes to choose from.

Exuma’s high season (like the rest of The Bahamas) is from December to April because of the incredible weather in the mid-70s (24°C) and mid-80s (29°C). All tours, businesses, and restaurants will be open with regular hours of operation. But accommodation prices can be double what they are the rest of the year, and tourist numbers are at their highest. So you need to make all of your reservations in advance.

The Shoulder months are May and June. The weather will still be mostly dry, crowds will be less, and businesses and tours will still be open.

The Low Season is from July to November during the rainy season. Hurricanes and tropical storms can occur, and rain is common. Many shops, restaurants, and tour operators close or reduce their hours during these months, but you can get some great deals on hotels and resorts that would be out of your price range in the peak months.

Frequently asked questions, how can you travel between islands in the bahamas.

Your inter-island travel options in The Bahamas are ferries operated by Bahamas Ferries or domestic flights operated by Bahamas Air. Ferry and flight schedules can be limited, especially during the off and shoulder seasons, so plan and book in advance.

Do I need a visa to travel to The Bahamas?

Citizens of the EU, Australia, U.S., Canada, and the U.K need a passport, a return or onward ticket, and a confirmed hotel or vacation home booking. If you’re coming from one of these five countries, then you do not need a visa.

If you’re a citizen of another country, you might need a visa or visa-on-arrival to enter The Bahamas. You’ll want to check your country’s visa guidelines and requirements.

Your passport will need to have an empty page for your entry stamp and be valid for at least six months past your entry date to The Bahamas.

Cruise ship passengers visiting The Bahamas for a day are exempted from obtaining visas.

Can DACA students travel to The Bahamas?

No. DACA students can only travel in the United States and U.S. territories – Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How much does it cost to travel to The Bahamas?

Expected travel costs in The Bahamas, plus airfare:

Lower End: $350/day per person.

Midrange: $650/day per person.

Higher End: $1000/day per person.

What should I avoid in The Bahamas?

Things you should avoid in The Bahamas are:

1. Hurricane season.

2. Unmarked taxis.

3. Never leaving your resort.

4. Expecting punctuality – everything runs on “island time” here.

5. Haggling. You’ll need to pay the stated price.

What do I need to know before traveling to The Bahamas?

Bahamas Travel Guide – Know Before You Go:

1. The currency is the Bahamian dollar ($), which is pegged to the U.S. dollar. So 1 Bahamian dollar is always the same as 1 U.S. dollar.

2. U.S. dollars are accepted interchangeably with Bahamian dollars, so you won’t need a different currency if you’re from the U.S. But you may receive change in Bahamian dollars.

3. Exchange rates are subject to fluctuations, so be sure to check this as your trip approaches. On average, 1 Bahamian dollar equals about £.72 British Pounds, €,84, and 6.46 Chinese Yuan.

4. Tap or “still” water is safe to drink in The Bahamas, so you don’t need to buy bottled water.

5. Many restaurants are closed on Tuesdays, and most restaurants don’t update their Google business profile. So you’ll want to call restaurants for their opening hours and reservations instead of relying on the internet.

6. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted at hotels and car rental agencies, but most shops and restaurants don’t take credit cards. And most of the shops and restaurants that take credit cards charge a 2.5-5% processing fee, which can add up quickly. So I recommend paying for meals and souvenirs with cash.

7. ATMs are available at some resorts, banks, and shopping centers throughout the islands, but they’re often not conveniently located to hotels and vacation homes. So I recommend bringing enough cash with you (especially if you’re from the U.S. with no currency change) or withdrawing lump sums to avoid making lots of visits to an ATM.

8. Bars and restaurants run on “island time,” meaning that service will likely be slower than you’re used to. You may have to get the server’s attention rather than waiting for them to approach. This is a cultural difference, not a sign of poor service.

9. Greetings are usually verbal rather than a handshake or peck on the cheek. It’s polite to greet everyone upon entering a taxi, shop, restaurant, or boat with a ‘good morning’ or ‘good afternoon.’

10. Electrical outlets in The Bahamas are Types A and B. So if you’re from the U.S., you won’t need an outlet adaptor. But British, European, and other travelers will need an  adaptor .

What is the best time of year to go to The Bahamas?

The Bahamas’ High Season is from December to April because of the incredible weather in the mid-70s (24°C) and mid-80s (29°C). All tours, businesses, and restaurants will be open with regular hours of operation. But accommodation prices can be double what they are the rest of the year, and tourist numbers and cruise ship dockings are at their highest. So you need to make all of your reservations in advance.

The Shoulder months are May and June. The weather will still be mostly dry, crowds will be less, and businesses and tours should still be open.

Can you drink the water in The Bahamas?

Tap or “still” water is safe to drink in The Bahamas, so you don’t need to buy bottled water.

The Great Exuma Travel Guide: Bahamas Travel Recommendations

If you’ve decided to make a trip to Great Exuma, congrats, as you’ve just made one of your best vacation choices ever!  Great Exuma is the largest of the 365 chains of islands and cays known as “The Exumas”. It is the perfect mix of an “out island” experience combined with all the great amenities you would need to have a relaxing, seamless vacation.

The Exumas have gotten most of their publicity from being home to the swimming pigs and the Fyre Festival disaster; however, they are much more than that. From having the most beautiful turquoise waters and untouched beaches you’ll ever see, to literally being a boaters paradise, The Exumas are the perfect location for ocean lovers.

Traveling to Great Exuma, Bahamas

No matter where you’re traveling from, you are in luck as Great Exuma is one of the easiest places to travel to in the Bahamas. It is one of the most southern islands of the 700 Islands & Cays in the Bahamas, located about 300 miles south of Miami. Hop on a quick 40 minute direct flight and you’ll find yourself in paradise before you know it! Direct flights are offered daily/weekly from many origins such as Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale, Toronto & Nassau.

Great Exuma-Things to do in the bahamas

Here are some of the flights offered:

  • Daily from Miami to Georgetown Via American Air.
  • Daily from Atlanta to Georgetown Via Delta Air.
  • From Charlotte direct to Georgetown Via American Air (Saturdays).
  • From Fort Lauderdale direct to Georgetown Via Silver Air (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
  • From Toronto to Georgetown Via Air Canada (Saturdays)
  • Daily from Nassau to Georgetown via Western Air & Bahamas Air.

Transportation in Great Exuma

No matter what island you’re visiting in The Bahamas, unless you have the funds to hire a chauffeur to drive you all around, I HIGHLY suggest renting a car. It’s a simple process, usually affordable (anywhere from $50-$100 a day) and allows you to really explore the island. Great Exuma is only 37 miles long, you can drive the whole island in 1.5 hours or less, and I suggest exploring the whole thing!

Before arriving in Great Exuma, book your car with Airport Car Rental, and swoop up your car just outside the airport. You’ll pay upon arrival and be on your way to explore the beautiful island in minutes!

Airport Car Rental (just to the left and across the street when you walk out of the airport) can be reached at (242) 345-0090.

Where to Stay in Great Exuma

Booking your accommodations is an important part of your travels. My suggestion is no matter what, book on the beach. There are tons of options in different price ranges, sure to fit anyone’s budget. The beach is the selling point of The Exumas, and I think you should take advantage of that by waking up every morning to the beautiful turquoise water and the crashing sound of waves.

There are a ton of Airbnb options, and it really doesn’t matter too much where you book on the island, as everything is relatively close. However, it’s important to note that Georgetown is the main town where you can find your grocery store, liquor store, shopping, restaurants, all that. There are other options for shopping and eating around the island, however, this is the main hub, and this is where you will find the most variety to fit your needs.

Whether you’re a hotel person or a vacation rental person, there are plenty of options to choose from. The nicest and most popular of the Hotels are Sandals & Grand Isle Resort. These will be more of your large resort feel hotels. I also suggest Peace & Plenty for a cute locally ran hotel in the heart of Georgetown. As far as vacation rentals, we stayed here , a cute house in a community called February Point and we absolutely loved it. The home was stocked with everything we needed, it was clean and comfy, situated right on the water with the most amazing views! The community it was in felt super safe, we went on morning walks/runs, and there was a gym/tennis court on property. I felt like I got the best of both the worlds of a hotel community + the comfort of a vacation rental. We cooked many meals at our house but also had the option to eat at the famous Rusty Anchor, which was located inside the community. I highly suggest renting in February Point.

The Great Exuma Travel Guide: Bahamas Travel Recommendations

The Best Restaurants in Great Exuma

Eating is almost always everyone’s favorite thing to do on vacation. An excuse to eat as much as you want with no repercussions, until you get home of course 😉 There are tons of dining options in Great Exuma, from cute coffee shops and local dining to a fancy meal, there will plenty of options for you to enjoy.

Bahamas Dining: Coffee & Breakfast

There were two cute places located right in Georgetown that we really enjoyed on our travels for coffee and breakfast. Great environment, good food, cute, homey, and local feel.

  • Karijava Coffee House
  • Driftwood Café

Bahamian Dining: Lunch & Drinks

I tend to do Bahamian food for lunch when I’m traveling to the out islands. Mainly because it’s usually the most convenient, but also the heaviest meal as most Bahamian food is fried or more “bar food” style. We had a couple of great lunch meals, they usually consisted of the same things, fish burger, grouper fingers, fried snapper, something of that sort. Whenever I’m traveling to the out islands I try to order the local fish as much as I can, so I know that it’s the most local and fresh thing on the menu, hence my meals mentioned above.

  • Shirley’s , located at the fish fry is probably the most popular Bahamian restaurant on the Island, and its gotten there for a good reason. The fried snapper was excellent, as were all the sides it came with. It gets pretty busy, so I suggest going early before the crowd hits! Also a great option for dinner.
  • St. Francis Pub & Grill , located on Stocking Island (a boat ride away) had the best fish burger we had all trip. I must say, all the fish burgers we tried (maybe 4 different ones, LOL) were good, but this one was the best! A simple locally caught fish, mine was Mahi Mahi, served to perfection, highly recommend!
  • The Rusty Anchor , located inside February Point had some great fish fingers. I think it’s important when traveling to stick to whatever the place is known for. I would never for example order a pasta dish from a Bahamian restaurant and expect to be blown away. Stick to ordering what they are known for and you will not be disappointed. In the case of February Point, everyone ordered something different, and we came to the consensus that the fish burger and fish fingers were definitely the way to go!

Dinner in Great Exuma

Most of our dinners were cooked at home because after a long day of beaching and boating, it’s usually too tiring to think about going out to dinner! We did however enjoy two spots worthy enough to recommend!

  • Splash Bar & Grill is a very casual dining experience, which we enjoyed for pizza, beer, wings & Billiards. This was a great spot to hit at the end of the day when you were tired but starving. We had fun playing billiards and listening to music while enjoying some pretty good pizza & wings!
  • Peace & Plenty’s R estaurant ,  will probably be your most high-end dining option on the island. Whether you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner you will be impressed with their menu. Standard sandwiches and burgers for lunch, with Pastas & Meat/Fish dishes for dinner, this will be your best bet for a fancier meal with a beautiful environment.

The Georgetown Grocery Store

The grocery store located in Georgetown will be stocked with basically everything you need. When we traveled from Nassau we brought some essentials with us, however upon arriving we were happily surprised with all the options the grocery store had. From sauces to organic goods to nice produce, they had everything we needed, which was great for cooking at home! If you are renting a home, I suggest cooking in as much as you can, food is quite pricey, you will find menu’s to be repetitive from restaurant to restaurant and you will be happier if you combine some home-cooked meals with your dining-out experiences!

Things to Do in Great Exuma, Bahamas

This is by far the most exciting section of this guide. Aside from maxin’ and relaxin’ on the beach, there are a few things that in my opinion are non-optional when traveling to Great Exuma.

You have to rent a boat or charter a boat to cruise around locally. There are a few options for local charters, you can contact Float Your Boat Bahamas to book either a group tour or a private tour. If you have any experience at all in boating, you can also rent a boat and captain it yourself. I would take advantage of this as there are not many places in The Bahamas that offer this! You can cruise all around the harbor, explore stocking Island and the famous Chat & Chill Bar, frolic on sandbars, pet stingrays, swim with turtles, and explore the marine park.

  • Contact Minnis Water Sports to rent a boat for you to captain yourself. Contact me to book a tour for you! The cost to rent a boat will be around $400 for the day. Charters vary.
  • Go to Cocoplum Beach. Those swings you see with Instagram models and beautiful turquoise water, yes, those are here, and yes, they are as amazing if not more amazing as they look. My suggestion is to pack a cooler, something to eat, and park yourself on that beach all day, I think it’s safe to call it one of my favorites!

Here’s another Great Exuma beach suggestion for you: the Tropic of Cancer Beach. Go there, enjoy the white sand against the bright turquoise water, and don’t leave until after the sunsets!

Take an excursion to see the famous Bahamas swimming pigs. Big Major Cay, home of the Swimming Pigs is approx. 60 miles from Georgetown. Hop on a charter and do the Staniel Cay day excursion, which is my favorite excursion of all time! Swim with the pigs, feed the iguanas, snorkel the Thunderball grotto, frolic on sandbars and swim with the sharks! Contact Float Your Boat Bahamas to book, pricing starts at $200 per person!

Top 5 airlines flying to Exuma

Great. Loved that there was WiFi on flight to keep in touch and excellent service of beverages and snacks.

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

at the time for boarding the lady just call Group A and no other goups and everybody from A to F go inside without the right turn, and when we get in theres no more spsce for carry on , the ones that get in at not correct group from the back occupy our space !!!!! a mess !!!!

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Flight was delayed 2.5 hours - a big deal on an overnight when you plan to sleep.

I feel like they have upgraded the app since I last flew United and I found it to be super helpful. I had stopped flying United unless absolutely necessary and my experience on this trip indicates they have been working hard to improve their services.

Surprisingly easy! I was hesitant to try this, but the cost swayed me. I actually felt like I had less stress than all the taxiing and possible delays that occur with short regional flights where you spend less time in the air than getting to and from the plane..

This flight was delayed multiple times and eventually canceled around 2-3ish. Original take off time was around 10:30am. By 3, there were no other options out of Houston, so stuck in Houston for from 3pm - 11am the next day.

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

The plane was dirty and the in seat air wasn't blowing as planes usually do.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Do not like the feeling of being in the basic economy. Everyone should feel good no matter what.

All flights were on time and boarding was issue free

Use planes with TVs on flights over 4 hours. The free entertainment was a cheap in between solution for a very long flight that you don't even bother providing meals or decent snacks.

Even though we left CMI late, we mostly made up the time.

Delayed almost 4 hours for a 45 minute flight with no explanation.

Again, multiple delays and I eventually just canceled and drove!

Great crew. Very comfortable business seats with nice bedding. Good food. We were delayed to let late passengers on the flight, but otherwise great experience.

Great crew. We were delayed so that late passengers could get on the flight. Love the bedding in business class. Good food. Great experience.

The CX617 from HK to BKK was delayed more than 1.5 hours.

Horrible - they lied to me about baggage & boarding, even though I specifically spoke to their agents the day before my flight about my issue. When I showed up they did not let me board and stranded me at my airport until I bought a new flight with money I did not have to spend.

I was in business class. There was an excellent headset. But half an hour before arrival they collected them! The rest of the trip I had to use a cheap earphone. There must be a better way to protect the headphones.

All four American Airlines flights I took in last seven days were delayed. Caused me loads of problems, missed meetings, loss of time and money.

For it to have left on time! Instead of two hours early with zero notice

Flight kept delayed from morning to late afternoon so I had to make other arrangements

Crew was nice, explained emergency protocol very well. Flight took off and arrived on time. Pilot explained the small delay that occurred with docking and providing updates. I would definitely fly spirit again.

Terrible… missed our flight due to ridiculously long time to go thru baggage check-in!

The crew was not great or professional. It seemed like they didn't really want to be there. A true lack of effort for accommodating customers.

Everything was really good but the seats are not very comfortable.

I paid for WiFi, but it (WiFi) was very very slow, will never take again! Impossible open Utube 😤😤😤

I had no legroom, although I paid for extra legroom. I could barely put my bag in front of my feet and under the seat. The Wi-Fi was horrible. In fact the flight attendant said that they had to reboot it and see if it was going to work and never did.

The guy with severe body odor sat next to me. For the whole duration of the flight it was a torture. The airline should have better policy on limiting people with bad body odor to board the flight. Passengers should not be the ones to endure bad odor for the whole duration of the flight. The airline should be e the one to ensure decent air quality for ever passenger.

Overall it was a miserable experience... I will never fly spirit for more than a 3 hour flight or overnight.

I checked a bag because it was $5 less than carry on. They managed to lose my bag on a 2.5 hr direct flight! Frontier has no airport staff at baggage claim to help. As soon as I got home around 11 pm I tried to use their online system to file the claim for lost bag - system wouldn't take the # on my baggage claim ticket - said it was not the correct number. Also said that I had not checked a bag, which wasn't true - even my online boarding pass showed that I had checked a bag. Wasted about an hour on that process with no luck. Tried again in the morning - same thing. So tried online chat with Frontier bot - waited 35-40" twice to be connected to a baggage agent and it never happened. Eventually drove to PDX after work and waited 2 hrs for the Frontier ticket agents to arrive prior to the next Frontier flight out of PDX and FINALLY got some help from one of them, to take me to lost luggage area where I was able to retrive my bag. Probably took 4-5 hrs. of my time and endless frustration to get my bag. This was my first -- and LAST -- experience flying Frontier Airlines. Check-in was also extremely difficult and time consuming. The flight itself (and staff) were fine but everything else about the experience was a total disaster! The fact that Frontier literally has NO WAY to connect to a human voice for customer service (in this case for lost luggage) is the WORST!!!!!

Frontier is a crappy airline nothing about it is honest

I didn't get to do this flight l, hard to review

Not good 😐 Over priced baggage fees Small hard seats No wifi or entertainment options 😕

Didn't like anything!! Horrible flight. Small seating area and hard seats. Butt was sore after 2 hour flight to Seattle No entertainment or free refreshments No wifi or USB charging receptacles to charge phone entoute like other airliners Luggage rates were 3 times as much as competitors. Difficult to navigate online luggue process to pre pay before flight Overall bad experience WILL NEVER RIDE OR RECOMMEND FRONTIER TO FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS!!! THIS IS A SHAME!! MOST MESERIBLE FLIGHT OF MY LIFE!! AND I THOUGHT SPIRIT WAS 👎 YOU GOT THEM BEAD HANDS DOWN!!

Flight was a little late taking off. Seats are too upright, no ports to charge devices, no wifi, no entertainment

Six hour delay. Poor customer service. No voucher. Bad communication. Missed important appointments.

Our flight was delayed an hour, then when we got to board our flight finally, we were waiting in our seats for take off for 45 minutes before it was communicated that there was a maintenance issue therefore we waited on the plane for over an hour while that was resolved. We did not get to Phoenix until almost 3 hours after we were originally supposed to. This was the first and last time I will be flying Frontier.

Flight was canceled with little warning. Flight was rebooked through Ontario, California and connecting flight was delayed by over three hours. Frontier is living up to their Greyhound of the skies reputation for sure.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

How to visit exuma on a budget.

Exuma is a district of the Bahamas, a water-lover’s paradise of 365 islands or cays surrounded by the clearest water imaginable, powder-soft beaches, and the friendliest marine life you will ever encounter. It is the quintessential off-grid experience many of us are seeking right now and can come with a hefty price tag unless you do your homework (or read this post:)). Exuma has long been on my bucket list and I experienced this magical place for only about $1500 including airfare, hotel, meals, car rental, and excursions for 5 days. This is how I did it.

1. I booked my flight using Hoppe r , an app that allows you to set your travel dates and watch for the lowest price on a flight. The app also predicts the date when the price will be at its lowest and sends alerts when prices drop. Granted, I booked during the pandemic so the flights were less expensive than usual but I highly recommend both Hopper and Skyscanner for booking flights.

2. I booked a room at Paradise Bay , a small, bohemian resort with oodles of charm, an incredible beach, and a half-board meal plan. I reserved the room directly on the hotel’s website, rather than through a booking engine, as it is typically less expensive. The meal plan cut the cost incredibly, as food is very pricey on the island, but we could still dine out once a day while exploring. Paradise Bay was a perfect place to social distance, as there were only 8 cottages and 2 villas on the property. I loved its unpretentious, relaxed vibe and the way the property showcased the natural beauty of the island, rather than distracting from it.

exuma bahamas trip cost

3. I booked a boat tour through the hotel with Swimming Pigs Adventure . When visiting Exuma, you simply must go out on a boat, either captaining your own or through a tour. We opted for the tour as our time on the island was limited. For $220 pp, the tour took us past some incredible celebrity homes and then on a full-day adventure visiting the following sights: Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane, Thunderball Grotto (an underwater cave featured in the James Bond film of the same name), Pipe Cay sandbar, Big Major Cay (home of the swimming pigs), Compass Key marina and its very friendly nurse sharks, and Iguana Island. We also stopped for a leisurely and delicious buffet lunch and cocktails at Lorraine’s Cafe halfway through the day. I thought the price was very reasonable for a 9 hour tour that covered over 130 miles by boat.

exuma bahamas trip cost

4. We rented a car to tour the island for a day. Taxis on Great Exuma will cost you and the island is pretty spread out with lots of incredible beaches and unique restaurants, as well as Stocking Island and its famous Chat ‘N’ Chill bar. Take the 10-minute ferry from Georgetown, the island’s capital city, to Stocking Island to swim with the stingrays that frequent the island’s shallow waters; then head to the bar for a mango daiquiri and delicious conch salad. Tip: avoid Sundays (pig roast day) as there are long waits for food and drinks.

While touring the island, we made a stop at Haulover Bay Bar and Grill for lunch with its pristine views of the aqua sea and sandbars. The restaurant’s setting is the very definition of serenity and its outdoor deck adorned with shells and fisherman’s nets adds to the whole castaway vibe of the place. Go at low tide and you can walk forever in knee-deep water dotted with starfish.

If you want to swim with sea turtles go to Hooper’s Bay beach. Stand in the water between the two docks and simply wait and they will poke their heads up to say hello. If you really want an up-close-and-personal experience wear a suit with green leaves on it…my friend did and the turtles were much friendlier to her. Go figure…they apparently eat lettuce.

A special thank you and shout-out goes to Shaking My Palm Palms instagram account for her Exuma inspiration and the most incredible images and drone footage of these stunning islands you will ever see. Exuma is truly an island experience like no other and a one hour direct flight from Miami can transport you there. What are you waiting for??

An Old Fashioned Travel Blog…

These days it seems like most of the travel information on the internet is either unhelpful fluff generated by AI or from influencers more interested in linking their outfits than anything else.

So I’m glad you found me! I’ve been writing this travel blog for over 8 years, and even though it’s “my blog,” it’s really all about YOU.

From “copy my trip” itineraries to really detailed reviews and comparisons of places to stay, you’ll get first hand intel on places I’ve actually been and insights about what I would do differently next time. Plus a HUGE archive of info on places that I frequent often…like Hawaii ; )

Everything I write is designed to help you get your trip from the “dream” phase to the “I can’t believe we’re actually going” phase.

Hawaii is how I got my start as a travel blogger. After moving to Maui for a little hiatus after school and playing tour guide for my steady stream of visitors, I started writing it all down. One move back to the mainland and DOZENS of trips back to the islands later and I think I’ve put together a little gold mine of Hawaii travel tips.

Florida + Caribbean

I’m a beach girl at heart so I’ve pretty much been everywhere in Florida. I’m partial to the Gulf Coast (by far the best beaches and shelling spots) but I’m always going somewhere new just to be sure . And I’m pretty obsessed with the Bahamas and Virgin Islands.

exuma bahamas trip cost

I grew up going to Walt Disney World as a kid and I still think it’s the most magical place on Earth ; ) I’ve been to Disneyland in California and Paris, Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii, and I’ve got my eye set on a visit to Tokyo Disney hopefully in the near future.

The American West

When I get the itch for a road trip, I usually head west. I’ve done quite a few big National Park trips, driven all of Route 66, and spend a fair bit of time in Santa Fe & Taos. And this year it’s on my bucket list to drive the entire Pacific Coast Highway.

31/50 States

I’ve got an never ending list of places I want to go, but I’m casually working on visiting all 50 states. Click the map below to see where I’ve been and get inspiration for your own adventures! And read this post for live updates on my 50 states challenge.

About Caity

I’m an Oklahoma based travel blogger on a mission to visit all 50 states and find the best, most unique adventures they have to offer. Some places are pretty obvious (and for good reason!), but others require a bit more digging. Those end up being my favorite ; )

What kind of travel can you expect here? Well, plenty of Hawaii and beach travel, obviously. Outdoor adventures and National Parks, but with a luxury twist. Cities/towns/regions with strong local culture (I love places that distinctly feel like no other place in the world), and no matter where I go I’m always looking for indie bookshops, tennis programs & tournaments, significant historical sites & museums, and vintage/antique shops.

ITINERARY INSPIRATION: One Week in the Exumas

  • August 8, 2019
  • Bahamas , Beach Breaks , Itinerary Inspiration , Luxury Travel

Planning your itinerary for one week in the Exumas? While much of the Bahamian experience is rooted in the trifecta of sun, sand, and sea, there are a range of things to do in the Exumas as you craft your itinerary for an epic week in the Bahamian Out Islands. Below I’m sharing our itinerary for a week in the Exumas, which includes a couple of memorable boat days, plus some beach exploration.

Day 1 ✧ Arrive + Settle In on Great Exuma

Things to Do in the Exumas

Following our trip to the Exumas, I had many intrigued people send me messages on Instagram  asking how exactly to get to the Exumas . It’s a valid question if you haven’t been and the natural consideration is flying into Nassau, the Bahamas’ most popular point of entry. Unless you’re planning on spending time in Nassau though, your options for flying direct into the Exuma island chain are likely a better bet. Great Exuma (GGT) has a great airport for accessing the region, and direct flights from FLL, ATL, MIA and CLT are available. If you’re on an early flight like us, you’ll be able to check into your accommodations by mid-day, giving you the afternoon to settle into beach life with a Goombay Smash in hand.

exuma bahamas trip cost

Tips + Takeaways:  For those planning a trip to the Exumas, a follow-up question – naturally – is where to base yourselves in the region. We opted for a stay at Grand Isle Resort on Great Exuma, but other popular options include Sandals (adjacent to Grand Isle), February Point, Lumina Point (on Stocking Island) and Staniel Cay Yacht Club (on Staniel Cay). Beyond hotels, villa rentals are a popular option ( Salt House , for example is a gorgeous villa property), and one that I’d absolutely explore on a future visit. If you’re the kind of traveler that tends to like to get off-the-beaten-path and you’re worried that staying on Great Exuma will feel too ‘done’, let that worry go. Opt to rent a villa vs. staying in a hotel for a more secluded experience, but know that being on Great Exuma has its merits as you’ll have access to boat rentals, ferries to Stocking Island, grocery shopping, etc.

Wondering what to wear? Read my guide to Packing for the Exumas for a bit of inspo!

Day 2 ✧ Exploring Highlights by Boat with Sugar Adventure Co.

Boating in the Exumas with Sugar Adventures

With a week in the Exumas, we opted for two full days dedicated to boating in the region. As I’ve mentioned in every post I’ve written on the topic, I think boating is really non-negotiable if weather permits. Factor at least one boat day into your budget (whether you opt for a shared trip or a private charter) because you really get to understand the wow-factor that draws people back year after year when you’re zipping through this island chain by water.

For our first full day boating in the Exumas  we opted for our self-dubbed ‘Highlights Tour’, scoping out the region’s main draws by boat. If you have only  one  day of boating on your calendar, this is the itinerary you’ll want to replicate with stops at Leaf Cay (Iguana Island), Pig Beach, Thunderball Grotto and Compass Cay to swim with the sharks.

Read about our full day boating in the Exumas with Sugar Adventure Co. for more inspiration!

Day 3 ✧ Golf + Sun at Grand Isle

As one of my New Year’s resolutions, I vowed to take a golf lesson. I’ve always wanted to learn to play but never made it a reality until this year when I signed up for a couple of private lessons and played a few holes at our local golf course. Having only taken my first lesson a few weeks prior to this trip, I bowed out of golfing at Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course but did follow the guys around in our golf cart for the second half of the round where the majority of the holes are on the water. For golfers, I can’t imagine there are many courses that out-rank this one on beauty! The green fees for non-resident golfers is about $125 for a round.

one week in the Exumas

After a round of golf we jetted to Big D’s Conch Shack for lunch with a view before soaking up some sun for the rest of the day. If you have a week in the Exumas (or the Bahamas in general!), you  must  get your fill of conch during your trip. You’ll see it served up in a million ways. Conch salad (fresh, done ceviche-style) was my absolute favorite but you’ll see conch burgers, cracked conch, conch fritters, blackened conch and more available on menus. Eat up!

Tips + Takeaways:  Let’s talk food for a second here. If the Exumas have one area for improvement, it’s the dining scene. We found good dining options extremely limited, especially for dinner, which is why I think renting a villa is a great alternative to provide options for grilling in with your group. We didn’t venture too far afield for dinner but our favorite options were 23° North at Grand Isle and La Fourchette.

Day 4 ✧ Little Exuma, Sandy Cay + Stocking Island

After having experienced the highlights during our first day boating, we asked the team at Sugar Adventures to take us to some new fan favorites only accessible by boat. This time, we headed south to the furthest point of the Exumas: Sandy Cay. The journey there was just as beautiful as the destination, through the crystal clear shallows where water is often just a few feet deep. Sandy Cay was a highlight but it was followed with a lunch stop at Chat n’ Chill at Stocking Island which closed out the day on a high note!

Tips + Takeaways:  Interested in bringing your drone to the Bahamas? It’s an incredible destination to capture the water from above but there are regulations for bringing in your drone. You’ll need to email the government in advance to get a written letter and provide those details upon entry. We left a $150 deposit upon arrival and retrieved it upon departure when we showed that our drone was still in our possession.

Day 5 ✧ Golf/Spa Day + Tropic of Cancer Beach

Tropic Breeze Exumas, One Week in the Exumas

For the second golf day, we opted to head to the spa while the guys got in their second round of the trip. With an Elemis Spa on site at Grand Isle and nearly a week’s worth of sun, I knew my face would need some extra TLC. The spa (which is small but well equipped) offers a range of facials plus options for massages and scrubs on site. Following our spa + golf combo, we jumped in our car and headed south to Little Exuma and Tropic of Cancer Beach.

Little Exuma and Great Exuma are connected by bridge so getting to the smaller neighboring island is a cinch. The famous Tropic of Cancer beach is on Little Exuma, about a 45 minute drive from our home base. There are a few famous restaurants and beach bars that grace this sandy stretch but the advice we received from a range of locals pointed us to Tropic Breeze (the other option is Santana’s). After lunch, we headed to the beach for the afternoon. And can I be honest? Yes, Tropic of Cancer is gorgeous but I’m not entirely sure what makes it  more gorgeous than any other beach in the Exumas. Making the pilgrimage to this stretch is practically a rite of passage for beach enthusiasts but if you aren’t able to swing it, don’t fret!

Tips + Takeaways:  Take chairs and/or beach towels to Tropic of Cancer beach (chairs are recommended). Many people complain about No-See-Ums in the Bahamas and laying in the sand isn’t going to help with avoiding bugs! There didn’t seem to be places to rent chairs when we arrived in the mid to late-afternoon so come prepared.

Day 6 ✧ Stocking Island

Things to Do in the Exumas

During our second boat day, we stopped at Chat n’ Chill for lunch on Stocking Island but we wanted a fully dedicated day to enjoy the beach bar and neighboring island. For our final full day, we took Elvis’ Water Taxi to Stocking Island ($15pp round trip) where we spent the day from about 11AM until 4PM, soaking up the sun, swimming with stingrays and enjoying fresh conch on the beach. If you’re not based on Stocking Island a day trip there is worth putting on your calendar! For those that aren’t as big on the beach bar vibes, check out the restaurant at Lumina Point , also located on Stocking Island.

Day 7 ✧ Departure

Boating in the Exumas with Sugar Adventures

Finally, it’s time for departure. We had an early morning flight home via Florida while the rest of our crew had the morning to hang with their afternoon flights. If you do have time to enjoy the morning, you can take the opportunity to enjoy one of the beach bars for a bite before saying goodbye.

Bahamas lovers out there (I know there are many!), what would you add to a perfect week in the Exumas? Any restaurants that are secret faves that are worth mentioning?

2. Best Budget-Friendly Accommodation – Turtles Nest Bahamas

Turtles Nest Bahamas

The Turtles Nest Bahamas in Hermitage is a quaint hotel just 700 meters from beautiful Turtle Beach. Offering sea and garden views, private parking, and nearby snorkeling opportunities, this resort, with its apartments, rooms, and studios, is an excellent choice for Exuma visitors on a budget.

The hotel’s smaller queen and king rooms may be fairly standard in terms of amenities. But with beaches as beautiful as Exuma’s, it’s likely you’ll be out exploring from morning until nightfall. So, really, who needs all the bells and whistles?

If you do prefer additional space along with the ability to cook your own meals—a great way to cut down on costs—then Turtles Nest Bahamas studios and one-bedroom apartments will be right up your alley. Featuring fully equipped kitchens, dining areas, and outdoor seating areas, these larger accommodation options supply you with everything you would need for a relaxing Caribbean stay.

3. Best Hotel for Beachfront Access – Paradise Bay

Paradise Bay

If you’ve ever wanted to stay directly on the beach, then look no further than the beachfront resort, Paradise Bay Resort, which offers guests adorable little bungalows right on the sand.

The collection of bungalows—all with air conditioning, modern furnishings, and walk-in showers—surround the property’s swimming pool while providing uninterrupted sea views that will truly leave you in awe.

With an on-site restaurant, extensive gardens, and a golf course just a mile away from the resort, plus the fact that the hotel can arrange boat tours, surfing, kayaking, and wakeboard opportunities, the Paradise Bay Resort guarantees a fun and beautiful stay just 15 minutes from Exuma’s International Airport.

4. Best for Families – Embrace Resort

Embrace Resort

If your kids are lucky enough to tag along on your trip to Exuma, then the Embrace Resort is up there as one of the best family-friendly resorts throughout the islands. Located just a two-minute drive from the breathtaking Staniel Cay Yacht Club, Embrace Resort boasts a range of villas that are ideal for families or groups of up to six people.

Aside from the fully equipped villas, what makes the Embrace Resort such a great choice for families is the fact that the hotel offers babysitting services—a huge perk for those times when Mom and Dad need a little break.

With three restaurants and three grocery stores within walking distance of the resort grounds, plus golf cart rentals, car hire, and the arrangement of tours and snorkeling, the Embrace Resort, with its onsite swimming pool, ticks all Exuma accommodation boxes.

5. The Most Luxurious – Grand Isle Resort & Residences

Grand Isle Resort & Residences

With its spa and wellness center, three onsite restaurants, and its 23 North Beach Club, the Grand Isle Resort, located right in Emerald Bay, is the epitome of a luxury resort—one that will provide you with an unforgettable vacation that you’ll be thinking about for years to come.

In addition to its onsite facilities, the resort’s close proximity to golf courses, coral reefs, and many other of Exuma’s most sought-after experiences will ensure that your time on the islands will be nothing short of exceptional. And we haven’t even mentioned the Grand Isle Resort’s accommodation options!

Guests at the Grand Isle Resort can opt for one-bedroom, two-bedroom, or three-bedroom villas, as well as a four-bedroom penthouse with some of the most spectacular views the resort has to offer. All of the villas include spacious seating areas, beautiful bathrooms, and fully equipped kitchens, along with ocean or garden views, which only add to the allure.

6. The Most Instagrammable – Tropical View Villas

Tropical View Villas

Tropical View Villas have somehow managed to make Exuma even more Instagrammable (if that’s even possible). And they’ve done so with their fully equipped pink hibiscus bungalows.

The boutique hotel in Williams Town, just a two-minute walk away from the Tropic Cancer Beach, features two-bedroom spacious houses with gardens, BBQ facilities, and fully equipped kitchens.

With surrounding palm trees, Caribbean Sea views, and complete serenity, the Tropical View Villas really combine beauty with simplicity, allowing you to switch off and enjoy your time in the Exuma cays.

7. The Best for Couples – Sandals Emerald Bay

Sandals Emerald Bay

What better way to truly enjoy paradise than at a couples-only resort? The Sandals Emerald Bay Golf, Tennis, and Spa Resort is a five-star, luxurious, all-inclusive resort equipped with high-end furnishings, world-class amenities, and a private beach area for guests to make use of.

Located in Rockers Point Settlement, Sandals Emerald Bay supplies visitors with a plethora of activities and facilities, including an expansive beachfront swimming pool, full-sized tennis courts, and 11 onsite restaurants and bars serving international cuisine to suit all palette preferences.

The beauty of the resort also expands into its accommodation options with rooms varying in size from beautifully decorated double bedrooms to larger, more exquisite two-story, one-bedroom suites that come with your very own butler!

As one of the most opulent resorts in all of Exuma, the Sandals Emerald Bay couldn’t be a better choice for special occasions and once-in-a-lifetime vacations.

Best Exuma Resorts Guide

The right hotel can make all the difference to your Exuma vacation. And there are a few important factors you need to think about before coming to your final decision.

Here’s what you need to consider when booking a hotel or resort in Exuma.

One of the first things to think about when booking accommodation in Exuma is location, as Exuma as a whole is made up of 365 islands and cays. Of those 365 islands, however, only 20 are inhabited, which helps make your decision that slight bit easier.

Great Exuma, Exuma’s largest island, undoubtedly brings in the most tourists. But if you’re after a more relaxing, secluded stay, then one of Exuma’s other islands may be better suited to you.

Luckily, for visitors to Exuma, getting from island to island is a fairly straightforward process as there are plenty of water taxis at your disposal. So once you’ve narrowed down which islands align with your vacation preferences, you’ll then be left with the all-important question of whether you want a beachfront resort, a resort near restaurants and other amenities, or a hotel with little to nothing around.

Beach Access

As Exuma is well-known for its picturesque soft sand beaches, beach access is one of the most major things to consider when choosing your accommodation—after all, people don’t visit Exuma to see skyscrapers and elaborate buildings now, do they?

Exuma boasts some incredible beachfront resorts—some with their own private beaches and even private islands—which allow you to step directly out of bed and onto the sand. These resorts are typically more expensive than those further away from the shoreline. But waking up to the sound of the ocean and uninterrupted views of Exuma’s magnificent water really starts your day off in the right way.

When deciding on accommodation, also think about how you plan to travel. Will you be hiring a car so you can drive to the beach? Or do you plan on exploring the area by foot? Your mode of transport will ultimately help decide how close you want to be to one of Exuma’s stretches of sand, so keep that in mind when booking!

Activites and Excursions

Exuma is up there as one of the best locations for relaxing. But it is also a haven for activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and diving. When choosing a hotel in Exuma, take into consideration the activities and amenities that they offer on-site as well as the activities they arrange with local guides.

You’ll need to think about the types of activities you want to do during your stay and ultimately factor them into your accommodation decision. Do you want to snorkel in some of the prettiest coral reefs the world has to offer? Or do you just want to relax by the pool after a stress-relieving massage in the spa?

If the latter aligns with your vacation itinerary, then choose a hotel with an expansive swimming pool and an onsite spa. However, if you want to explore Exuma’s surrounding waters, then look for a resort that offers or can arrange private or shared excursions.

As Exuma is a dreamy vacation destination, it probably comes as no surprise that accommodation options are above average in terms of price. Now, this isn’t to say that you can’t find budget-friendly resorts and hotels on the islands—because you totally can—but highlighting your budget before deciding on a hotel can really narrow down your options.

Work out how much you’re willing to spend on accommodation while also considering the types of activities you wish to participate in. People often set a budget for their accommodation but forget about additional costs (activities, food, and transportation), which ultimately ramp up the price of their getaway.

Visiting Exuma during the low season (end of April to the beginning of December) can result in cheaper accommodation prices while booking a room or a villa with a kitchen can help cut down on food costs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

What are the best hotels in exuma for families.

One of the best hotels in Exuma for families is the Embrace Resort in Staniel Cay. The resort offers guests accommodation with spacious living areas, fully equipped kitchens, and bathrooms with a bathtub. However, what really sets it apart from the rest is the onsite pool, nearby restaurants, and grocery stores, and its babysitting services to give Mom and Dad a well-needed break.

Which hotels in Exuma have the best beachfront locations?

Thanks to the island of Exuma’s narrow shapes, there are plenty of resorts and hotels with beachfront access. However, Paradise Bay and Sandals Emerald Bay Golf, Tennis & Spa Resort are two hotels in Exuma with the best beachfront locations.

Paradise Bay boasts quaint beachfront bungalows, while the five-star, all-inclusive Sandals Emerald Bay opens up onto a private beach that only hotel guests can access.

What are the most affordable hotels in Exuma without compromising on quality?

You can expect to pay slightly higher prices for a hotel in Exuma. But there are some great budget-friendly options that won’t break the bank or put you off visiting altogether. One such hotel is the Turtles Nest Bahamas, which not only falls into the reasonably priced category but also features everything you’d need for a comfortable Out Islands stay.

Turtles Nest Bahamas has more affordable queen and king rooms, along with slightly more expensive studios and apartments. Both the studios and apartments, however, come with fully equipped kitchens. So, you can ultimately cut down on food costs to save money elsewhere.

Which hotels in Exuma have the best views or scenic locations?

Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the St Francis Resort are two hotels in Exuma that offer the best views, thanks to their beachfront locations. The Grand Isle Resort boasts rooms with interrupted sea views, while the St Francis Resort features houseboats that are directly on the water—the views don’t get much better than that!

The picture-perfect Exuma islands have an abundance of beachfront resorts and peaceful boutique hotels that are guaranteed to suit all preferences and budgets.

Whether you’re looking to celebrate an anniversary, a honeymoon, or a birthday or just experience the beauty that Exuma has to offer, the islands and its hotel have something for you.

Of all the hotels we’ve mentioned today, Paradise Bay is our top choice due to its affordability, its nearby activities, and its beachfront access. However, if you’re looking to vacation in style, then the Sandals Emerald Bay is a seriously strong contender.

How to Get to Exuma: Best Ways to Travel from Nassau

exuma bahamas trip cost

Once you know how to get to Exuma, your Bahamas vacation will open up to a world of adventurous possibilities. Imagine your day trip to Bahamas, immersed in the warm sand of Pig Island, wading in the crystal clear water, side by side with the adorable pigs in the Bahamas. With a little planning, this could all be yours.

The Bahamas is an archipelago country made up of over 700 islands bordering the northern Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Today, we will be discussing how to get to Exuma Cays — an extraordinarily wild set of over 360 islands, cays, and islets in the southern half of the country.

The Exuma Out Islands are filled with beauty and plenty of things to do. Below, we will break down the best way to travel there and what should be on your itinerary when you get there. Hopefully, by reading this you will be ready for the vacation of your dreams!

How to Get to Exuma from Nassau

There are two main ways how to get from Nassau to Exuma. The first and most popular way for how to get to Exuma is by ferry. The alternative choice, which is becoming much more popular in the past few years, is by plane. We write about the voyage for each below.

How to Get to Exuma by Ferry

Knowing the schedule of how to get to Exuma by ferry isn’t exactly straightforward. There is a lot of guessing and waiting involved. Regardless, a one day cruise to Bahamas has been the most cost-friendly way to travel to the Exuma Cays for years.

Why? Because it is the way of the masses. If everybody is doing it, it makes it more affordable for everyone. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it is worth it. Companies like Bahamas Ferries and Balearia Caribbean have been the industry leaders for decades, but they’ve yet to figure out convenience.

According to Bahamas Ferries website: “The Exumas are the most widely recognized islands in The Bahamas”. Yet, the only route serviced to the Exumas goes to George Town, the Exumas capital on Great Exuma Island. This is a sheer 50 miles from the Exumas most well-known attraction — the Exuma pigs. And even further from some of the other natural beauty you will see in the northern Exuma islands.

Being that the journey is a four-hour round trip from Nassau to George Town (if there are no delays), it is very unlikely you will come anywhere near Pig Island on the ferry to the Exumas. You have to ask yourself if you’d sacrifice experience for price.

If it were us on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to the Bahamas, we’d want to see everything the islands had to offer.

How to Get to Exuma by Plane

Bahamas Day Trips by plane have steadily grown in popularity as people realize how much it offers. Tours to Pig Beach from Nassau are a breeze and you actually get to pick your own itinerary!

Typical flights to Bahamas leave in the early mornings and get back around sundown that evening. You will have door-to-door service which includes hotel transfer and be treated like a true VIP. Just ask other customers which have given us a 5-star rating on Trip Advisor.

In a Bahamas Air Charter , you can make it to the Exuma Cays from Nassau in around 30 minutes. That saves you about three hours of exploring when compared to the roundtrip on a ferry. Imagine what you can see in that time! Plus, you won’t have to deal with the often harsh conditions of the open water.

Additionally, it goes without saying, the views you witness in the clouds on a clear Bahamas day, staring down at magnificent turquoise blues and greens are unparalleled.

The booking process couldn’t be more straightforward and our crew of local guides and professional pilots will take care of everything. You will have nothing to worry about, just get in touch with us today.

4 Excursions on Day Trips from Nassau to Exuma

So, you’re probably wondering what you can do on day trips from Nassau to Exuma. Well, wonder no more. Here are some of our favorites from the trip:

1. Pig Beach Bahamas Tour

Many who take time to figure out how to get to Exuma elect to take Swimming Pigs Tours. Swimming with pigs Bahamas style is one of the most popular attractions in the Exumas. In 2019 alone, the famous beach was visited by over 6 million people. That must mean there is something special about it.

Nobody knows exactly how the pigs got there. It’s assumed farmers from Staniel Cay brought them over decades ago after the village complained about their smell. All we know for sure is that the swimming pigs Exuma highlight is a favorite among many of our customers.

There are around 25 pigs at Big Major Cay who will swim up to your boat and take food straight from your hand. You can’t fully imagine the spectacle until you witness it. We’ve been doing the tours for years and it still never gets old!

The swimming pigs Exuma tours are great for the whole family! See the Exuma pigs in action at Big Major Cay on Pig Beach.

The swimming pigs Exuma tours are great for the whole family!

2. Nassau to Staniel Cay Day Tour

Almost every Pig Beach Bahamas tour will cross through Staniel Cay. If you want to know how to get to Exuma, you must acknowledge that the best tours will take you to Staniel Cay; the heart of the Out Islands. Enjoy a Nassau to Exuma Day Trip with Bahamas Air Tours – the best way to visit the Swimming Pigs from Nassau!

Once on the island, don’t be shy to stop in at Staniel Cay Yacht Club which is conveniently near the marina. Here, you’ll be able to chat up locals about the swimming pigs Exuma tour you just went on. You might also take in some local island lore and culture where its history is literally written on the walls in the form of photographs and artifacts.

If you’re hungry, why not scarf down a local delicacy and start a conversation with the island bartenders. Trust us, they are friendly and will make sure you never go thirsty!

3. Compass Cay Sharks Highlight

Another truly magic experience is being able to jump in the water with reef sharks at the Exumas’ Compass Cay! At Compass Cay Marina , it’s a sanctuary with dozens of harmless nurse sharks that are waiting for you to wade in the water with.

It’s the perfect photo opportunity and one of our favorite places to take guests. You don’t know what thrill feels like until you feel a shark’s smooth exterior rub up against you.

At full growth, these mammals can be up to 10-feet in length and nearly 300 pounds. Despite typically being bottom-dwellers and feeding off the ocean floor, they still have full carnivorous potential. Don’t worry, though, they don’t usually mess with humans unless they feel threatened. Just play by the rules and you have nothing to worry about!

The Bahamas sharks at Compass Cay Marina are a crowd favorite! See them on a Bahamas day trip in addition to the Exuma Pigs in the Bahamas at Pig Beach on Pig Island.

The Bahamas sharks at Compass Cay Marina are a crowd favorite!

4. Thunderball Grotto Excursion

The last highlight of your Staniel Cay day trips which we will point out is the adrenaline-junkie’s paradise of Thunderball Grotto . Let’s just say, if you have a fixation on adventure, you’re going to love this place.

It is a rock formation in the middle of the sea, within swimming distance of the Exuma pigs. If you can figure out how to get to Exuma, you will be able to figure out how to make it here, too. However, getting there is only half the adventure. What is hidden inside is the real treasure.

Imagine a thriving ecosystem of marine life with vibrant corals, an abundance of exotic fish, and underwater tunnel systems that kept even James Bond himself in adventure mode in his 1963 Hollywood film titled Thunderball.

You don’t have to be 007 to visit this place, but you will surely feel like it.

1. Swimming Pigs on Pigs Beach

exuma bahamas trip cost

Pigs can’t fly but they sure can swim; join us as we embark on this magical Swimming Pigs Tour adventure! Swim with friendly sharks at compass cay, feed the swimming pigs and get a close look at the endangered Bahamian Rock Iguanas all while cruising in the pristine waters of the Exuma Cays.

The Swimming Pigs

In the middle of paradise, with billionaires and celebrities for neighbors, is an island populated only by swimming pigs . For decades, this archipelago of 365 islands would remain largely unknown to the world. It would not be a ruthless pirate, pioneering loyalists, a notorious drug kingpin, or the infamous Fyre Festival that would unveil Exuma to the world, but rather the most unlikely of creatures. Appearing in magazines, videos, newspapers, commercials, TV shows, and countless selfies, the Swimming Pigs of Exuma, in the Bahamas, have become a bucket-list sensation and have been named one of the marvels of the universe.

Big Major Cay, is a daydream when you meet the inhabitants: loud, snorting pigs paddling out to greet you like a jolly bunch of golden retrievers rushing to the door when their owner finally gets home from a long day of work.

The locals at Big Major’s “Pig Beach” are transplants rather than native islanders, just like many of the people you’ll meet in the area. And though they’ve clearly taken to their tropical digs and rising popularity — spurred in part by a dramatic appearance on “The Bachelor” and more than a few well-liked Instagram posts — the rewards of fame are free food. Most tours to the island start at 9 a.m. It’s best to go early in the morning for the most uninterrupted attention from the pigs. By late afternoon, you’ll usually find them tuckered out with full bellies, and they’re more likely to lounge in the sand than to paddle through the water with you.

2. Swimming With The Sharks On Compass Cay

Sharks On Compass Cay with Staniel Cay Adventures

exuma bahamas trip cost

Does swimming with the sharks sound dangerous? This part of a tour can be loads of fun! Nurse sharks, the bottom-dwelling sharks that live in the warm, shallow waters of the Bahamas are a friendly bunch. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to get up close at Compass Cay just north of Staniel Cay

The nurse sharks are – for the most part – harmless to swimmers and snorkelers.

Nurse sharks may have the ominous dorsal fin of a predator but they are much more easygoing than your average shark. These sharks are greyish-brown in appearance, reach 7.5 to 9.75 feet long, and weigh up to 300 pounds! Young nurse sharks can be identified by their spots. Nurse sharks feed on the fish, squid, and crabs of shallow ocean floors, and use their strong jaws to crush and eat shellfish, and even coral.

Is it safe to swim with nurse sharks?

A human fear of sharks is not without reason, but it just so happens that nurse sharks are laid-back and mostly harmless. That is why many divers and snorkelers visit the Bahamas to swim with sharks. Nurse sharks that live near marinas are fed by local fishermen and have grown accustomed to the presence of humans. This makes them much more friendly. Having your own day tour with Staniel Cay Adventures allows you to take advantage of every opportunity to swim with the nurse sharks.

3. Visit The Iguanas On Bitter Guana Cay

With Staniel Cay Adventures ( Photo Below)

The Exuma Island Iguana is a critically endangered subspecies of northern Bahamian rock iguana that is found on the Exuma island chain in the Bahamas with a wild population of 1,300 animals, it is listed on the IUCN Red List. Iguanas of Bitter Guana Cay is a must stop to visit with amazing coral rock formations hand over a picture perfect little sandy beach. The Exuma Island iguana is the smallest of the three subspecies of C. cychlura . It attains a total length of close to 3.3 ft. Its coloration is dark-gray to black, with white or orange tinged scales on the head and snout depending upon which cay the iguana is from. As soon as you step on Bitter Guana Cay, you will notice the island is filled with iguanas. These iguanas are endangered species, with the population being less than 5,000.

If you just pass by, you will not notice the dozen of iguanas on the island; they won’t move or scurry or even blink. When you pull up in the boat and hit the sandy beach they will run out to greet to you like a long lost friend. They hang around like puppy dogs, basking in the sun & playing with the visitors. Just like the other islands in The Exumas that are inhabited by wildlife, these are accustomed to people visiting them. As you walk the beach, you will notice some stay in hiding; they are super friendly, although they will only let you get so close.

Due to their isolation to the rest of the world, the iguanas are indigenous to this island & are not found anywhere else. This subspecies is found on at least seven small cays throughout the central and southern Exuma island chain of the B ahamas: Bitter Guana Cay, Gaulin Cay, White Bay Cay, Noddy Cay, North Adderly Cay, Leaf Cay, and Guana Cay. The entire population on Leaf Cay was translocated to Pasture Cay in 2002.The Exuma Island iguana utilizes a variety of habitats from sandy beaches and xeric limestone devoid of vegetation to dry forests. The iguanas use limestone crevices or sand burrows for retreats at night and in adverse weather conditions The Exuma Island iguana, like most Cyclura species is primarily herbivorous, consuming leaves, flowers, berries, and fruits from over 100 plant species. Favored food plants include seaside rock shrub , darling plum , pride of big pine , joewood , black torch , seagrape silver thatch palm, white stopper , bay cedar , and the rotting fruit of seven-year apple . The Exuma Island iguana is also an important means of distributing these seeds to new areas (particularly when females migrate to their nesting areas) and, as the largest native herbivores of their island’s ecosystem, they are essential for maintaining the balance between climate and vegetation. The longevity record in captivity for an Exuma Island iguana is twenty-three years, six months.

The iguanas live in large social colonies with a lack of social structure; typically not aggressive towards each other. They bask in the sun, relax & greet with visitors to their own private island.

If you’re looking for a truly enchanting experience, come explore the Bahamian waters with Mermaid Melody. The beautiful boat ride will take you to some of the most secret and exciting attractions in the Exuma Cays. You’ll have a chance to snorkel alongside a sunken mermaid and piano, visit a turtle sanctuary, snorkel a sunken plane, walk inside an open cave near the “Fountain of Youth”, frolic on White Bay Beach, and enjoy a delicious local lunch in Black Point.

Mr Copperfield did a really cool thing back in 2011. He commissioned the famous underwater museum artist deCaires Taylor to sculpt a statue of a mermaid looking at a grand piano. He then sank the sculpture in about 13-15 feet of water off of Rudder Cay, which is just south of Musha Cay, and had a contest to see who could find it.

As you descend into this strange new world, you can see the Musician that was installed in 2011. The Musician is a stand-alone sculpture that includes a full-scale mermaid and Steinway concert grand piano replica. It is hidden underwater for snorkelers to discover near a private island owned by the illusionist David Copperfield. The piano plays soft music, similar to the sound of a whale or dolphin, as divers approach, and was constructed using 316 stainless steel. The mermaid, waiting to play, is made from pH-neutral cement to encourage marine growth.

What To Do When Traveling To Nassau, Bahamas

Sandy beaches, blue skies, luxury resorts, and colorful cuisine are just a few of the endless offers when visiting Nassau, Bahamas, making it every vacationer's dream destination. This update refreshed the Nassau travel guide, expanding on fascinating things to do such as scuba diving to underwater sculpture parks, wandering through the 'Versailles of the Bahamas,' discovering historical forts and attractions, and so much more. Wanderlusters should read on to find all the info to bolster their ultimate Nassau, Bahamas travel guide.

Top Things To Do

Aside from the quintessential Bahamas vacation experience of spending the whole day at Nassau's most beautiful beaches , tourists will find a plethora of other activities and attractions with which to fill the rest of their getaway.

From relaxing to adventurous, there’s something amazing in and around Nassau for every type of traveler to experience.

For beach bums seeking further shores, stomach-growling foodies, curious history buffs, and binocular-and-camera-wielding wildlife enthusiasts, these are some of the best attractions in Nassau.

Visit Nassau's Beaches

Granted, there are around 17 picture-perfect paradise beaches in this part of the Bahamas, all of which are unique and beautiful in their own way.

However, with their powdery sands, vibrant blue ocean, and paradisiacal atmosphere, these five shores are notable tourist favorites, consistently ranking high among the top beaches in Nassau for visitors seeking sublime samples of sun, sand, and sea.

Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Festival in The Bahamas is one of the nation’s most energized parties, taking place around the new year annually. If visitors miss the event, Junkanoo Beach is the next best thing.

  • This entertaining beach always has something going on, which is excellent for the more eccentric beach bums seeking fun flair during their day by the sea — but not so ideal for folks in search of peace and quiet.

Visitors falling into the former category will have the time of their lives at this sunny spot, with its lively atmosphere and entertainment roster, as well as plenty of nearby places to grab excellent grub.

Cabbage Beach

No, there aren’t cabbages growing on this sunny shore, but there is almost every kind of water sport imaginable.

As one of the most popular beaches in The Bahamas (which enjoys a convenient location near Nassau Harbor), Cabbage promises a boatload of fun, from water-skiing and parasailing to jet-skiing, snorkeling, and so much more.

With all that water fun comes hungry bellies, and fortunately for calorie-starved beach bunnies, this spot boasts a lot of restaurants, bars, and shops.

Cable Beach

Cable Beach is always cited as one of the best beaches in Nassau. Clean shorelines, impeccable sand, and crystal-clear water make this beach a top-rated spot among residents and visitors alike.

Its tropical beauty isn’t the sole reason for its popularity, though; this beach is effortlessly close to many of the most upmarket resorts in the Bahamas, with the likes of Sandals Royal Bahamian, one of the most affordable Sandals Resorts , only a stone’s throw away.

Unsurprisingly, one of the world’s most romantic destinations features a lovely seaside spot with a name like 'Love Beach’.

Loved-up couples and honeymooners are known to kindle their romance and enjoy quality time together on this beautiful beach, with its pretty and private ambiance resulting from its superb location away from downtown Nassau’s popular beaches.

Jaws Beach earned its name after it appeared in the iconic Hollywood blockbuster movie Jaws . Given its fame, it can see a few more people than other beaches.

However, seeing what this legendary stretch of sand is like in real life, not on the big screen, is always a top activity in Nassau.

While it was a dramatic spot in the film, in reality, it’s another stunning Bahamas beach worthy of Instagram pics.

From colonial times to pirating stories of the Caribbean, the following historic sites in Nassau are fascinating and will provide visitors with a glimpse into the country’s hefty history.

Find the best historical attractions when visiting Nassau below:

Witness The Queen’s Staircase & Fort Fincastle

The Queen’s Staircase — often referred to as ‘the 66 Steps’ — is held up by an interesting story. The stairs were carved out of solid limestone by slaves between 1793 and 1794, crafted to serve as a direct route to Nassau city from Fort Fincastle.

According to rumors and historical accounts, Queen Victoria of Britain once walked the steps, which were named in her honor.

Today, visitors can see the staircase and take photos of the site, where the encompassing vegetation creates a scenic backdrop.

At the top of the Queen’s Staircase is Fort Fincastle — indeed, one of the most impressive old forts in Nassau out of the main three, which also features replica canons.

  • Built in 1793, the stronghold was erected by a former governor of The Bahamas, Lord Dunmore.
  • Situated on Bennett’s Hill — the highest point in Nassau — the vistas from Fort Fincastle a worth the trip alone.

Explore Fort Charlotte

Sitting on 100 acres of land, Nassau’s Fort Charlotte was built in 1788 and houses all sorts of medieval features people normally only read about in history books and fantasy novels.

Think cannons, tunnels, and dungeons — which visitors get to see in real life — and this place delivers some impressive photo ops.

Hiring a local guide is a great way to visit Fort Charlotte when traveling to Nassau, and a guide can help ensure the grounds are open for exploring.

Montagu Beach & Fort

This is a public beach with a beautiful surrounding area full of things to do and see. The historic Fort Montagu is definitely worth a visit and costs around $2 or so per person for admission.

Once visitors have explored the fort, the nearby fish market is a fantastic (and tasty) experience, where fresh conch salads and droves of live conch are available for purchase.

  • Fort Montagu Entrance: $2 per person
  • Note: Cash only

Enjoy easy and free parking just outside Fort Montagu.

Parliament Square in The Bahamas is, quite possibly, one of the country’s most famous areas. Dotted with numerous of the island’s recognizable pink and white government buildings, this part of Nassau, with its Georgian architecture dating back to 1815, is indeed beautiful to the eyes.

As mentioned earlier, The Versailles Gardens is a unique medieval garden and one of the best things to do on Paradise Island , if not the most interesting thing to do in The Bahamas, overflowing with rich flora and fauna and deep-rooted in history.

Also referred to as ‘the Paradise Island Cloisters’, this spectacular place is compared to the Versailles Gardens in Paris. The site’s twelfth-century monastery also sits within the ground, which guests are also welcome to explore.

Most visitors can wander Nassau's Versailles Gardens in anywhere from ten to twenty minutes, and it's an excellent stop for a stroll or snapping some lovely photos.

Clifton Heritage Park in the Bahamas is a supreme choice for learning about the history and culture of the country while experiencing first-hand what made the place as it is today.

History, culture, nature, and beauty abound, possibly rendering the park one of the unique attractions in The Bahamas for visitors looking to learn about much of the country in one place.

The terrain comprises rocks, wetlands, and white sandy beaches, as well as the impressive ancient architecture of the Lucayan people, who were the very first inhabitants of The Bahamian Islands.

Even snorkeling is on the cards at this park; in fact, with its giant underwater sculptures (seriously, bring a camera), Clifton Heritage Park may be one of the best places to snorkel in the Bahamas in terms of uniqueness.

Shiver Ye Timbers At The Pirates of Nassau Museum

The pirate history of The Bahamas is always a topic of interest, even among folks not so history-inclined. The Best Time to Visit Nassau, Bahamas

  • Best Time to Go to Nassau: November to April (peak tourist season, but the best weather)
  • Nassau Hurricane Season: June through November

Similar to many tropical islands in this portion of the planet, the summer is warm and humid and can see rainfall — albeit sporadic, mostly. Typically, hurricane season in Nassau runs from July to October, while the high tourist season spans from November to April.

Peak season usually sees the best weather in the Bahamas, with the sunniest, clearest skies and less chance of rain. It’s also windier during this time, making the tropical heat a little more bearable, thanks to a cooling breeze.

However, as with most peak tourist seasons, flights and hotel prices soar, and crowds are much denser.

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas

Swimming pigs of the Bahamas in the Out Islands of the Exuma

Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.

If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.

Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?

Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.

How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas

Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.

Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.

How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau

Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida

There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:

Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip

Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours

This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.

Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.

Is Pig Beach ethical?

Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.

In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.

In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:

  • A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
  • Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
  • A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.

While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.

How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach

All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:

  • Remain calm at all times.
  • Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
  • Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
  • Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
  • If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.

What to pack for your excursion

Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Beach towel
  • Camera and/or phone
  • Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
  • Change of clothing
  • Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
  • Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)

It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.

It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.

Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.

Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross previously visited Pig Beach during a press trip to the Bahamas. Disheartened by tourists' mistreatment of the pigs, she aims to educate travelers on how to visit Big Major Cay and other animal-centric destinations responsibly.
