Welcome to Carloway Mill

Harris tweed visitor centre , welcome to carloway mill, we look forward to your visit..

Our Mill is unique even in the world of Harris Tweed as we offer visitors guided tours and working demonstrations to take you through the process of creating tweed on our original Victorian machinery.

Carloway Mill is a nonprofit company set up to promote and maintain the tradition of Harris Tweed weaving in the island tradition.

Everyone here at the mill is highly skilled in working with our traditional machinery and will themselves be your guides throughout the tour and demonstrations.

School Groups and Coach Parties Welcome.

Weaving demonstrations by appointment only.

The Carloway Mill is the oldest Harris Tweed Mill in the world. Using machinery that dates back to  1892 visitors have the unique opportunity to witness how our skilled craftsmen continue to work the very same machinery their forefathers used.

See how we produce the yarn for our weavers to work and how the completed tweed is then washed and finished before being examined and awarded the famous Orb trademark.

Carloway Mill is one of three working Harris Tweed textile mills in the world which produces the renowned Harris Tweed fabric.

Harris Tweed is handwoven on traditional  single and the newer double width looms by the islanders in their homes in the Outer Hebrides. Made from pure virgin wool, dyed, spun and finished at the mills in the Outer Hebrides.

Harris Tweed  is then stamped with its distinctive Orb trademark, a safeguard, and guarantee that ensures the authenticity and traceability of the Tweed.  Harris Tweed is protected by the 1993 Harris Tweed Act of Parliament and overseen by The Harris Tweed Authority who are  the Guardians of the Orb.

The Mill is situated in the quiet and peaceful village of Garenin, Carloway on the west side of the Isle of Lewis.

Carloway Mill is the smallest mill and is proud to employ a multi-talented workforce, whose artisan skills and creative abilities are of an exceptionally high quality, which in turn allows the Mill to operate using traditional craft machinery dating as far back as 1892. This gives you our visitors that unique opportunity to see how our famous  “ Clo Mhor ” is made.

The traditional Gaelic language can often be heard spoken in the soft island lilt throughout the mill.  These combinations add to the flavour of the unique culture, language, and heritage of the Tweed industry.

We welcome you to visit our Mill and hope that you will enjoy your tour and find it a rewarding experience.

Follow our guides as they walk you through the process of creating our world-famous tweed.

Let customers speak for us

I was so fortunate to meet Clare, tour the mill and buy my coat there last September, 2023. So, when this key became available I jumped on it. It is packaged with thought to sustainability and humor and was delivered quickly to the U.S. I am more than pleased!

I received my keyring and love it.

Beautiful cloth and beautifully assembled

My brother wears my Granddad's kilt and I am wondering if my daughter may one day inherit mine! Beautiful material, nothing like the horrendous school kilt of my youth, smooth, warm and a delight to wear. While I loved some of the other colours available the black is very versatile and can be worn casually or dressed up. The cut is also incredibly flattering, the length practical, not sure what more you could ask of a skirt?!

1st time visiting the shop today after gazing at a stunning skirt in the window for the past month. I walked in and was greeted by the loveliest lady. I told her I was interested in the kilt. She helped me to fit the kilt correctly, showed me the different ways I could wear it and gave me tips on how I can style it with other garments. So happy with this purchase. The craftsmanship of this garment is outstanding. A piece of clothing for life. If you want a unique outfit for any occasion I highly recommend you visit this shop.

Absolutely stunning piece of cloth, made with a lot of love and by heart- I've already worn it several times and IT will be my favourite for sure. Not cheap but worth every penny. Would be great if the shipping to Germany wouldn't be that expensive. Thank you so much for your passion!

Fantastic. Beautifully made. Perfect fit as custom made item. Wool is so cosy and soft. Definitely recommend this company. 🥰

Prickly Thistle stands for everything we believe in as a customer and Clare’s vision and her team go above and beyond to make incredible clothing and these gloves were exactly what we needed for our cold mornings and warm afternoons here in Weatherford, Texas! We look forward to many years of supporting this great business and enjoying our visits to Scotland!

Wonderful fabric, design and handwork! I will be back for more!&

Gorgeous jumper, made to measure. Fantastic customer service.

The scarf is so unbelievably warm. Beautifully made.

My Banner scarf has a wonderful colour. Like rays of sunshine in cold cloudy days. The weaving is excellent and the material keeps me warm. It was a nice moment when I opened my parcel and found such a lovely scarf in it.

I knew it would be soft, but I didn't expect it to be so silky soft. It was well worth the wait, I absolutely love it! If I could change one Minto thing with it, it would be the hood. I feel like it's way too big. If the material was folded a 1/2 inch into itself around the edges, then sewn it would sit perfectly 🥰 This is likely only my issue, though, because I have a small head, hahaha. The fit is perfect! They ask for your measurements so that it will fit custom to you. If you're debating buying this hoodie or whichever style you're looking at, trust me, it is worth the price and wait time. I plan to buy a kilt in the future. I'm not a dressor skirt person, but their kilt for women looks like a blanket of cozy, and if it's like the hoodie I just got, it will be just as amazing. ❤️

The climate stripes fabric is nothing which can be compared with any fabric being produced and sold from a mass-production. Touching it, you feel the freedom and smell of the Scottish Highlands❣️ Tha e a' cur na Gaidhealtachd an cuimhne mo chridhe ❣️❣️❣️

Proud to support an amazing team that produces such quality pieces. My kilt, scarf and hat, have been keeping me warm with style during this Alaskan winter.

Customer Reviews

I've been sharing with everyone I can how cool this brand is. The fabrics are ultra high quality, designs gorgeous, and most importantly the company has a soul. Clare and her team are moving mountains to improve the supply chain of textiles to be natural fibers and have built a community around it.

We booked a tour while on a trip to Scotland last month. We had a fascinating tour. It was not only interesting, but heartwarming to see a firm dedicated to the motto „People and planet before profit“ and truly interested in making a difference in the community. We got to see every part of the manufacturing process from yarn to finished garments. We take so much for granted and it was a real eye-opener seeing how much work goes into a tartan weave before an inch of material comes off the loom. We were able to see everything up close and ask as many questions as we wanted. It was a real pleasure to meet Clare and the team. Highly recommend.

I recommend ! Highly 😄 I came to visit the Mill in the beginning of November. I was motivated by learning more about the tartans and meet the team. I enjoyed this time there so much 🥰 the team is great ! They share their passion, their values and we can learn more about their work, the different processes to create a tartan, fascinating ! I truly saw a authentic factory and people motivated by strong values and much kindness. Thank you for the Mill tour 😊

Aberlour: The Home of Walkers Shortbread

Posted by Michael Mortimer on 13th Nov 2013

Aberlour, in the North East of Scotland has been the home of Walkers Shortbread for over 100 years.   Nestled in the valley of the river Spey famous for its fishing, hunting and whisky, the Walker family have been making shortbread here from an unchanged recipe since 1898.

Queens View Small

Walker’s life in Aberlour started when Joseph Walker set up his bakers shop at number 99 High Street providing bakery goods for the local area. At the time, Speyside was a popular destination for shooting and fishing parties who would often return home laden with gifts of Walkers shortbread packed into tartan tins. It was these early visitors to the area that helped Walkers establish a name and soon there was a growing demand both at home and abroad. 115 years later, you don’t have to go all the way to Aberlour to buy your favourite Walkers shortbread fingers. All products are available to buy online from Walkers brand new shop.

Walkers could not ask to be in a more beautiful, unspoiled and natural location. They have always found that Aberlour was the perfect place for making the finest shortbread in the world. Despite being a tiny community Speyside is world famous due to the whisky industry and is also one of the biggest exporting regions of Scotland. It is known as the golden triangle of Scotland, with many successful businesses also benefiting from this location, Baxters, Johnstons and local distilleries such as Aberlour, Macallan, Glenfiddich and Glenfarclas, are to name but a few.

Original shop small

In the beginning the unique location of Aberlour helped Walkers grow to be what it is today and in turn Walkers is helping Aberlour grow by providing employment for the local community. From modest beginnings of a small village bakery, Walkers have grown to where they are now: 3 large bakeries in Aberlour, with a further 2 bakeries in the nearby town of Elgin. This doesn’t mean however, that they would ever forget where it all started and the original village bakery shop still sells the complete product range. If you are visiting Speyside (and we strongly recommend you do) you can still pop in to the original bakery and take home a piece of history with you.

The Glenlivet distillery is one of the best distilleries in Speyside  and is one with a beautiful history with twists and turns that end up in excitement. This character is expressed in the taste of the company’s whisky and it is called the ‘capture of the spirit of Glen.’

The Classic tour will give you an insight on the whisky making and distillation process of the company as well as a chance to enjoy complimentary dram and make a toast to George Smith, right on the land he farmed more than 2 centuries ago.

On the Inspiration tour, you will be taken to the No. 1 warehouse where you can taste a dram directly drawn from the cask before heading to the Malt Loft for a tutored tasting of the distillery’s new whisky expressions.

The Legacy tasting tour is an exclusive tour and tutored tasting experience of several much matured single malt whiskies from the stables of The Glenlivet. After enjoying a dram from one of the traditional casks, you will be given an exclusive gift as a souvenir. You will also see the exhibition while explains the history of the distillery as well as a gift shop and coffee shop where you can get several gifts and local cuisines respectively.

Buy a bottle… or maybe more

Before you visit the distillery, maybe you want to try something special that The Glenlivet have for you .

If you want a recommendation, go for something really special, like  Glenlivet 1963 We work hard and we deserve that.

But if you are not for the fancy one, let’s give a try to  Glenlivet 18 Year Old

Getting here

If you’re coming to The Glenlivet via road, is just on B9008, just about 10miles from Tomintoul.  Visitors with Satnav should input AB37 9DB as postcode.

Coming by railway? The rail stations in proximity with the distillery are Aviemore and Keith.

If you’re using an aeroplane, you should travel westwards from Aberdeen airport towards Inverness. When you get to Huntly, travel left towards Dufftown. Go through the B920 on Dufftown and travel to Tomintoul. At Tomintoul on B9009, just travel right and onto B9008 and look out for signs of The Glenlivet Distillery.

Tunnock’s Factory Tour

Tunnock’s is one of Scotland’s most iconic brands.

As Coldplay singer Chris Martin said: ‘You can’t choose between the Caramel Wafer and the Tea Cake – they’re like Lennon and McCartney – you can’t separate them.”

The company was formed in 1890 when Thomas Tunnock purchased his first bakers shop in Uddingston for just £80. Turnover today has snowballed (sorry!) to more than £50 million.

Caramel Wafers, the first of the famous five lines – Tea Cakes, Caramel Wafers, Snowballs, Caramel Logs and Wafer Creams – were launched in 1952.

Mick Waldram works on a train at Alstom’s plant in Derby.

‘We’re by no means out of the woods yet’: workers face uncertainty over Alstom train plant

Talk of Elizabeth line order raised hopes over safeguarding future of Derby factory but staff are taking nothing for granted

“I t’s strange at the moment: everywhere’s so quiet. It’s not good.” Mick Waldram has worked at Alstom’s sprawling train manufacturing plant on Litchurch Lane in Derby for 20 years, like his parents before him, and has watched in recent months as its six production lines have been gradually mothballed.

“I’ve been here 20 years and my brother’s been here 20 years as well,” Waldram says. “My mum was the managing director’s secretary, she was here 38 years, and my dad was a projects engineer who was here 36 years. We want to stay here. Me and my brother are not looking at leaving, we want to stay here if possible, do another 20 years.”

Talks with the transport secretary, Mark Harper, on Tuesday raised hopes that a new order for 10 trains on London’s crowded Elizabeth line would safeguard the future of manufacturing at this historic site, which started work in the 1840s.

But after months of gnawing uncertainty for the 1,300 manufacturing staff whose jobs are at risk, and with kit standing idle and suppliers shuttered, no one is taking anything for granted.

Production manager Darren Spencer at Alstom’s plant

“I don’t think we’re there yet: if you read the wording from the government, there’s caveats in there, there’s get out of jail cards,” says Darren Spencer, a production manager at the site and a rep for the Unite union. “We’re by no means out of the woods yet.”

Harper said he had reached an “agreement in principle” with Alstom on the 10 trains, subject to value for money for the taxpayer, adding that he was confident “a solution is now in sight”.

He and the trains minister, Huw Merriman, have stressed the complexity of the issue. But the Labour MP and shadow transport secretary, Louise Haigh, says it could have been resolved long ago.

“Mark Harper has spent months claiming a deal to save jobs at Alstom was out of his hands. It is shameful that he has had to be dragged kicking and screaming under pressure from Labour, the industry and Unite, just to come back to the table,” Haigh said.

She added: “Ministers need to end this cycle of chaos on our railways and develop a consistent rail procurement strategy to give certainty to manufacturers.”

Unite has worked in an unusually close double act with senior management at Alstom, in an attempt to convince the government that while future projections for the rail industry are upbeat, Litchurch Lane faces a potentially unbridgeable gap in its order schedule.

Staff and managers feared that could lead to hundreds of jobs and decades of expertise being lost – and new contracts being fulfilled overseas.

The cost of the downturn in orders is already evident onsite, where hundreds of workers gathered to mark the last train rolling off the production line late last month. Some have already taken voluntary redundancy, with more due to leave in the coming weeks.

The now empty car bodies welding area at Alstom’s plant.

One contractor based at Litchurch Lane, Paintbox, went into administration last year when its work painting new carriages dried up – although some of its staff have been taken on by Alstom. Motherson, which did the wiring on the trains, pulled out of the site. Another Alstom supplier, Solo Rail Solutions, in Birmingham, which made the doors, appointed administrators earlier this month.

With rail woven deeply into Derby’s local economy as well as its heritage, the campaign to close the gap in Alstom’s order book has attracted the support of scores of local businesses – with the slogan displayed on a giant banner at Derby County’s Pride Park ground during last weekend’s match.

Football fan Luke Brame, who completed his apprenticeship at the site and has worked there for nine years, says he feels proud of his handiwork as he travels around to watch matches.

Welder Luke Brame at the Alstom plant

“I quite like working here because I go on trains a lot for football. It’s quite cool when you go on one and you think: ‘I built this one,’” he says. “I’m waiting to see what the future is really. I haven’t gone for voluntary redundancy because I don’t know what else I want to do, and I want to carry on the legacy that the older people have left me.” While his day job is usually welding, for the moment there is nothing for him to weld.

If the order for the 10 Elizabeth line trains is confirmed – extending an existing contract – Alstom plans to restart production in Derby on a slimmed-down basis, with three or four production lines brought back into action, until work is due to start on 54 trains for HS2, in a year or so.

That contract is a joint venture with Hitachi, which is also warning about potential job losses at its Newton Aycliffe factory in County Durham, without help from the government to bring forward orders. Harper met representatives from the factory this week, and the Department for Transport insists that – as with Alstom – they are seeking a solution.

The French multinational Alstom inherited the vast Derby site – the biggest in the world outside China – when it bought the Canadian company Bombardier’s train business in 2021, as the industry emerged from the financial earthquake of the Covid pandemic.

A train leaves Alstom’s factory in Derby.

Work servicing and refurbishing much of the UK’s passenger rail fleet continues here, as does engineering and design, which were never at risk; but manufacturing has been halted for now.

Campaigners who have fought for the future of the site welcomed Harper’s announcement this week – but lamented the months of brinkmanship and bureaucracy it took to get here.

“This is an unnecessary journey that we’ve just been on,” says John Forkin, the managing director of Marketing Derby, the city’s inward investment agency, which corralled hundreds of local businesses to throw their weight behind Litchurch Lane. They wrote to Harper earlier this week, calling on him to “save our trains: do the deal”.

The manufacturing engineer Chloe Turnbull at the Alstom train factory in Derby

“We will still be seeking meetings with ministers about the future of trains,” Forkin says, citing the fate of up to 15,000 jobs in the local supply chain, many at small companies. “We’ve got to stop this boom and bust. We should be able to plan it a lot better. We have to stop doing this.”

Back at Litchurch Lane, the cloud of uncertainty lingers.

Chloe Turnbull works in “methods engineering”, shuttling between the desk-based engineers and the hands-on production workers she trained with. “If there’s any issues that come up during the production of the trains, I’m here to get your engineering drawings and stuff like that.”

“This is my fourth year now. I did my apprenticeship for the first three years. I went down the whole production line from start to finish,” she says. “The more I can be learning now the better, and obviously the thought of not having anything any more, and going to find something else is so stressful. So I’m very stressed and upset, because I enjoy it.”
