France Paris L'Arc De Triomphe

Still some surprises left after centuries

The world's most popular tourist destination, France's very name conjures up images dripping with romance and bucolic charm. The French are known the world over for being both traditional and cool in every sense of the word, and virtually every traveller has a mental postcard of a Parisian café, complete with smoking patrons and accordion soundtrack. The country that taught the world what haute cuisine was all about may not have invented wine or cheese, but they certainly set the bar – both culinary and culturally – for the rest of us to live up to.

The best outdoor activities in France (and the best places to try them)

Aug 18, 2022 • 9 min read

Mighty mountains, wild rivers, green hills, Alpine valleys – the astonishing diversity of the French landscape is one of the country's biggest draws, but there’s more to a visit to France than just sitting back and admiring the view.

There are myriad ways to get outside and active in les grands espaces (the great outdoors), from ever-popular adventure activities such as hiking and cycling to more esoteric options such as paragliding, scuba diving and via ferrata (scrambling, clipped to a metal cable). All that’s required for the following French thrills is a sense of adventure.

Hike shepherds’ paths in the French Pyrenees – like the Alps, minus the crowds

There’s no end to the places where you can enjoy a hike in France, but few spots can offer the big vistas (and views) of the French Pyrenees . Less crowded than France’s other great mountain range – the mighty Alps – the Pyrenees region offers a wealth of incredible hikes, traversing pretty valleys, mountain meadows and lofty peaks. Many of these trails have been followed by Pyrenean shepherds for centuries, and you might well spot some of them herding flocks of sheep and goats, especially during the twice-yearly transhumance (when livestock is moved to and from the summer pastures).

For serious hikers, the long-distance GR10 and GR11 offer formidable challenges, as does the Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne, an epic long-haul trail that traverses almost the entire length of the Pyrenees from Spain to France. For shorter routes, try the hikes to the Cirque de Gavarnie, Lac de Gaube, Mont Né or Pic du Canigou.

If you prefer your trails to be crowd-free, consider walking in the Cévennes, the range of forested hills and plateaux to the north of Montpellier , in Languedoc-Roussillon . The mountains of Corsica are also fantastic for escaping the crowds – the ultimate challenge here is the GR20 , the 180km (112-mile) route that runs right down the island’s rocky spine. It’s not a hike for the unfit or the faint of heart, but for sheer cachet, nothing else compares.

Cycle along the banks of the Loire, France’s longest river

Flowing across France for 1020km (634 miles), the Loire is the country’s most majestic waterway. It’s most famous for the many lavish châteaux that line its banks, constructed by French kings, queens and aristocrats, but it’s also a brilliant place to explore by bike. A dedicated network of cycle paths (collectively known as La Loire à Vélo ) has been developed, carving up the glorious Loire countryside into short, manageable sections that are achievable even for novice cyclists (the Loire valley is mercifully flat).

Much of the route runs along the banks of the Loire, offering wonderful views over the river, and it’s easy to find accommodation in the many small towns and villages along the route. There are also plenty of little cafes and bistros where you can fuel up for the journey.

Many other similar routes are scattered around France. The Canal des 2 Mers en Vélo cycling route runs from the Atlantic Coast to the Mediterranean via a chain of inland canals, while the 236km (147-mile) Autour du Luberon route runs through the dreamy countryside of central Provence .

A skier making turns in powder snow in Chamonix, France

Hit the slopes in Chamonix, the home of French skiing

If you’re a snowhound, you’ll already be familiar with the hallowed names of the top skiing destinations in the French Alps. The slopes at Courchevel, Méribel and Val d’Isère are legendary amongst skiers and snowboarders, and all have played a huge role in developing winter sports as we know them today.

But for Alpine fame, nowhere measures up to the mountain town of Chamonix . Tucked in under the formidable bulk of France’s highest mountain,  4808m (15,774ft) Mont Blanc, it’s surrounded by some of the best skiing in all of France, from pristine groomed runs to hair-raising off-piste routes that are only suitable for seriously experienced skiers and snowboarders.

Most esteemed of all is La Vallée Blanche (The White Valley), a 2.8km (1.7-mile) off-piste route that is considered to be one of the most challenging and thrilling slopes on the planet (it even featured in a James Bond movie). Only the very best skiers can hope to tackle it, and you’ll need an experienced guide, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

Catch a (surf) break on the French Atlantic Coast

Some of Europe’s highest waves roll in from the Atlantic and smash into the west coast of Spain, Portugal and France – making these areas hugely popular with surfers. Surf central in France is the Atlantic town of Biarritz and the stretch of coast that stretches up to Hossegor – it's southwest France’s answer to the Californian shoreline.

Numerous surf lodges and surf camps offer somewhere comfy to sleep after a day on the waves, alongside tuition and tips for novice and experienced surfers alike. There are also plenty of places where you can hire a board if you haven’t got the baggage room to bring your own.

Late afternoon sunshine on the Dordogne River in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, France

Paddle down the Dordogne past châteaux and cave paintings

There are few better ways to see France than with a paddle in your hand – and with no shortage of lovely rivers to explore, you certainly won’t have any trouble finding somewhere to do it. Perhaps the prettiest of all is the Dordogne , the river that snakes for 483km (300 miles) through the limestone hills of southwest France.

This area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Dordogne is littered with some of Europe’s oldest cave paintings (many of which are found in the deep caverns around the Vézère Valley), as well as some impressive castles, gardens and medieval market towns.

But it’s the gloriously green countryside that steals the show, and drifting along the Dordogne in a canoe is perhaps the most enjoyable way to experience it. The route between Argentat, Beaulieu-sur-Dorgdogne, Veyrac and Souillac is dotted with canoe companies who can help you get out on the water, either solo or on a guided group trip.

The Ardèche in southeastern France is another super river for paddlers, particularly the stretch through the craggy Gorges de l’Ardèche.

Rafting on the Verdon River in the Verdon Gorge near Castellane Alpes-de-Haute-Provence France

Go whitewater rafting in the Gorges du Verdon, Europe’s mightiest canyon

If you’re after a little more adrenalin on the water, how about clambering into an inflatable boat and heading out into a foaming mass of whitewater rapids? Several French rivers offer white-knuckle rafting trips, in which you and a group of fellow rafters will find yourself plunged into a wild rollercoaster of water armed with nothing more than a flimsy plastic paddle and a prayer.

The best rapids are found around canyons and gorges such the Gorges de l’Ardèche and Gorges du Tarn, but for the maximum endorphin rush, the epic Gorges du Verdon – the largest canyon in Europe – takes top prize. Be warned: it’s a wild ride and you’re 100% guaranteed to get a soaking. The town of Castellane is the main hub, with various routes nearby, including the memorable trip to appropriately-named Point Sublime.

Kayak the Calanques to discover secret beaches

Finding space on the beaches of the French Riviera in summer can be next to impossible, but there is a corner of France’s Mediterranean coast that’s usually much less crowded, and that’s the Calanques – the web of high-walled inlets that pockmark the parched white cliffs to the south of Marseille .

Celebrated for their brilliantly blue water, these hidden channels offer brilliant swimming and secluded sunbathing, but the trek down to them can be exhausting in the heat of summer. A much better way to reach them is by sea – local kayak companies run guided trips to many of the inlets, with the added benefit that whenever you get too hot, you can just slip into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Paragliding in the thermals around the Puy de Dome, France

Paraglide past the ancient volcano of Puy de Dôme

The Auvergne is a little-known corner of France, but it’s a place of great beauty – and home to a peculiar landscape of extinct volcanoes known as puys . These rumpled humps are one of the best places in France to paraglide – sailing the invisible updrafts thrown up by the landscape attached to a parachute.

It takes considerable skill to master the art of paragliding, but local activity providers offer tandem trips where all you have to do is sit back and take in the incredible views. The imposing Puy de Dôme is the classic paragliding location, and if the weather is right, you’ll see plenty of paragliders soaring silently around the summit.

Scuba dive in the Réserve Naturale de Scandola

Corsica is an incredible spot to learn to dive. Surrounded on all sides by sea, the Île de Beauté has some of the most pristine waters anywhere in France, including the glorious Réserve Naturelle de Scandola , a protected area that covers more than a thousand hectares of the Mediterranean off the island’s west coast, near Piana.

It’s not possible to get into the reserve on foot, so traveling by sea is the only option – sightseeing trips can be arranged, but to really appreciate the reserve, you need to get into the water, either by snorkeling on the surface or, better still, by strapping on a scuba tank. Colorful coral, moray eels, groupers, octopi, swordfish, tuna and sea urchins are just some of the creatures you might spot here.

Another great location for snorkellers is the Îles d’Hyères – a small archipelago of islands south of Toulon, which includes the national park of Port-Cros . The islands’ beaches and rocky coastline are brilliant for exploring with flippers and fins.

Crossing a chasm by via ferrata in Des Evettes La Flegere, Chamonix

Challenge yourself on a via ferrata – it’s rock climbing, but not as you know it

First developed by Italian troops during WWII, the via ferrata (‘iron way’) enables even novice climbers to ascend the heights for jaw-dropping views. Using a system of fixed cables, ladders and bridges, you’ll find yourself traversing sheer cliffs, steep summits and jelly-leg-inducing drops that would otherwise only be accessible to experienced climbers.

It’s extremely safe and fantastic fun, but you will need to bring your own head for heights. There are via ferrata routes located all over France, especially in the Alps . Standout locations include La Via des Evettes and the Mer de Glace near Chamonix, Rocher de la Chaux near Morzine, and the Grande Fistoire near Sisteron.

If you can’t make it to the mountains, don’t fret – you can hone your climbing skills without leaving the capital. The sandstone escarpments of the Forêt de Fontainebleau , on the edge of Paris, are a popular area for bouldering – many top French climbers come here to practice before hitting the big walls.

France Tours & Vacations

Senanque Abbey with blooming lavender field in Provence on a sunny day with blue skies

There’s a reason France is the most visited country in the world. Actually, there are several.

The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The Pyrenees and Chamonix. Escargot and ratatouille. Champagne and croissants and berets and baguettes. Napoleon and Simone de Beauvoir and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Jazz bars and vineyards and lavender fields as far as the eye can see. ‘Un petit peu’ of this, ‘un petit peu’ of that. A balmy evening on the French Riviera, a morning frost on the fields of the Somme. French flags flying after the FIFA World Cup. Guillotines falling after the French Revolution. Chanel and Chandon and Versailles and Vuitton. Forget the museums; this country is a work of art.

What makes the French so, well, French? Is it the food? The wine? How about the art, the philosophy, the history, or the fierce passion often caricatured as arrogance? Whatever it is, it’s seduced Francophiles around the world for countless years and there’s no sign of it slowing down.

The French are lovers of life. They celebrate the ‘joie de vivre’, or joy of living, in every aspect of their day. Conversation should be meaningful; food should be rich and sumptuous; music should move you; art should change you.

Sure, there are the stereotypes of the French being rude, but you could be forgiven for your reluctance to speak English when you’re the most-visited country in the world. There are, after all, only so many times one can give directions to the Eiffel Tower. But sit down for dinner at a French person’s house and you’ll discover the opposite. France is a very liberal country and every topic is up for debate – dinner is just an entrée for the conversation.

Much of France’s reputation rests on romanticized images of Paris. Sitting at a cafe on the Ile-St-Louis with a piping-hot croissant and cafe au lait, for example, or watching sunset from the steps of Sacre Coeur. But travel through France and you’ll find an incredibly diverse and multicultural country that changes so much between regions, from Marseille’s cultural melting pot to Biarritz’s surfers to the hardy mountain folk of the Pyrenees and Alps.

Every region and valley, every coastline and ridgeline and three-hour line for the Louvre, will offer up something different. But remember, there’s one thing that doesn’t change no matter where you go: the unwavering belief that there’s nothing better than being French.

History and government

After the conquest of the Gauls and the fall of Rome, the area we know as France was dominated by a tribe known as the Franks. They were headed up by a brutal man named Charlemagne, whose mission was to convert all of   Europe  to Christianity. After Charlemagne’s death his empire was split into three, with West Francia corresponding to the modern territory of France.

The Hundred Years’ War

West Francia, which was really a patchwork of territories run by the dukes, had institutional power more or less centralized in the 12th century. As time went on the tension between France and England grew until the outbreak of the Hundred Years’ War, which actually lasted 116 years. Though France’s population was decimated during this period, thanks to both war and plague, it was also a formative time for the country’s national identity.

One of the key figures to come out of this long period of fighting was Joan of Arc, who is still a national hero in France. She was born in 1412, just after the Battle of Agincourt, during which the French were dominated by the English. As a young girl she heard the voices and saw visions of multiple saints, all of whom told her to go fight for Charles, the rightful king of France. At the age of 16 she traveled to his court to convince him of her mission and somehow did exactly that. She turned the tide of the war and in doing so was captured by the English and sentenced to death as a witch. Her ashes were scattered in the River Seine, but her story was never forgotten.

The French Revolution

Bad harvests, taxation, abject poverty and an unrestrained aristocracy sowed the seeds of the French Revolution in the 18th century. The Renaissance began in   Italy   and spread across Europe, ushering in the Age of Enlightenment, which spread the ideas of individual liberty, tolerance and the separation of church and state. In France, King Louis XVI had inherited a country in dire trouble but was still living it up at the Palace of Versailles. The peasants revolted and stormed the Bastille Prison – hence the national celebration of Bastille Day – and King Louis, along with Marie Antoinette, his queen, were captured and executed by guillotine. A decade of chaos ensued.

It was Napoleon, a military general, that took control of France following the revolution and established the Napoleonic Code, which has become the foundation for the development of most modern democracies. He embarked on military campaigns throughout Europe and was eventually defeated and exiled by the combined forces of   Russia   and Prussia, a northern state that would rise to power as a united Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The World Wars

The 20th century was a horrific time for France with   Germany   invading the country twice. France suffered huge casualties during both WWI and WW2, and by 1945 it was on its knees. Further conflicts followed in colonial territories across Africa and Asia, which led to an influx of migration to France. In Europe, governments were dealing with the fallout from WWII and making agreements to avoid another conflict, from which the European Union was born.

France is now a leading power both in Europe and globally after a huge post-war effort to rebuild the country. It has the third-largest economy in the EU and is one of the most modern countries in the world, continuing to value liberty, fraternity and equality. Recent years have seen issues arise with the Islamic extremism and the European refugee crisis, but the country continues to grow and remains a thriving destination for tourism.

Eating and drinking

The gastronomic pleasures of France are world-renowned, so travellers won’t be worried about going hungry. There’s something to suit every budget here, from Michelin-star restaurants to market stalls and everything in between, and it’s not just frog legs and snails that are on the menu.

There’s simply no better buy than a fresh, crusty baguette. Buy one for less than a euro from the nearest bakery and take it down to the nearest park or river. Apply butter liberally, fill with whatever you like and bite into France – c’est magnifique!

Pastries, cakes and tarts

French chefs set the global quality benchmark for pastries so there’s no feeling guilty when you sample the croissants, eclairs, crepes, macaroons and whatever else you can get your hands on. Find them at your local patisserie and don’t forget to say merci (or mercy, depending on how many you eat).

If you’re going to indulge in a little wine, there’s no better place than France. It is, after all, home to some of the most famous wine regions in the world: Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Loire, Provence, Champagne. Whether you’re at the cellar door or on the restaurant floor (please, drink responsibly), there’s tasty tipple with your name on it.

When in France, right? From soft cheeses like brie and camembert to a hard, sharp Beaufort, it’s all on offer in France’s bountiful cheese shops and markets.

Beef Bourguignon

This beefy stew originates in Burgundy and is an example of a peasant dish now considered high-end cuisine. It’s prepared with beef braised in red wine and broth, flavoured with garlic, onions and mushrooms, and it’s absolutely perfect on a winter’s evening.

Geography and environment

Bordered by Spain,   Andorra , Luxembourg, Monaco, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Belgium, France’s geography is as varied as its neighbors.

In the south, the Pyrenees form a natural border with a   Spain . This mountain range rises over 11,100 feet (3400 meters) and stretches from the west coast to the east. It’s a hiker’s paradise in summer, with thousands of miles of hiking trails, and a haven for snow sports in the winter thanks to a huge number of ski resorts.

To the south-east, France borders the Mediterranean Sea all the way up to the Italian border. A large stretch of this area is what’s known as the French Riviera, which has long been a popular tourist destination thanks to its warm weather, calm water and golden beaches.

Continue north along the Italian border and you’ll reach the French Alps, France’s other predominant mountain range. The Alps are home to Mont Blanc – France’s highest point – and form another natural border, this time with both Italy and Switzerland.

France’s central region is mostly rolling hills and fields, perfect for farming and producing wine. There are two main rivers, the Loire and the Rhone, with the Rhone running south from   Switzerland   through to the Mediterranean and the Loire running north and west to the Atlantic.

The west coast is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and sees a cooler climate than the east. The large Atlantic swells have brought surfers to the area for years with several international surfing competitions being held throughout the year.

Northern France, which is bordered by   Belgium , Luxembourg and Germany, remains relatively flat with grasslands, fields, forests and, of course, the capital of Paris. These northern areas suffered most during the wars, both because of their proximity to Germany and the landscape itself. This is where trench warfare was first employed, only possible because of the huge swathes of flat land.

Chanel. Louis Vuitton. Dior. Lacroix. Hermes. You want luxury? You got it. Paris has long been considered the fashion capital of the world and if that’s your bag, well, you’ll need some room in your bag after a stroll down the famous Champs-Elysees. France isn’t all high fashion though. Yes, the French are notoriously fashionable, but there’s plenty of shopping to be done for those that aren’t quite ready to step out on the catwalk.

Remember, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States and Canada generally have strict customs laws.

And you thought Paris was just about fashion? It also happens to be the fragrance capital of the world. There’s no better place to pick up a sensational scent than in one of the city’s many perfumeries, some of which have been trading for more than a century. It’s the perfect gift – or a subtle suggestion – for your friends and family back home.

Flea Markets

Parisian flea markets are a top spot to pick up a vintage bargain. From jewelry and purses to paintings and old-school electronics, you’re bound to find something unique or, at the very least, enjoy trying. Make Porte de Vanves and Porte de Saint-Ouen in Paris your first stops.

Village Markets

Regional French markets just ooze with charm and can be found all over the country. Peruse fresh produce, home-made jams, pickled vegetables, rich cheeses and summer flowers, or just soak up the provincial atmosphere and try your hand at having a chat with one of the locals.

France has been at the forefront of winemaking forever and there are plenty of high quality wines to be found at very decent prices. Just remember that French wines are named for their geographic origin rather than the grape. Take a Burgundy, for example: if it’s red it’s pinot noir, if it’s white it’s chardonnay. Do some research and reap the rewards.

Events and festivals

There are festivals happening all over France throughout the year. Whether you’re in the city or a small town, you can expect a lot of food, some phenomenal wine and plenty of music.

Bastille Day

The French national day is celebrated on July 14 and commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison during the French Revolution. It’s celebrated all over the country, but Paris is the place to be, with the city hosting parades, fireworks and the famous Firemen’s Balls, where the main station in each Parisian district throws open its doors for a huge ball lasting until 4 am. It’s a tradition that’s been happening for over 100 years.

Avignon Festival

Performers and art lovers from around the world descend on Avignon for this three-week celebration of performance art. Dance, theatre, comedy and musical performances feature on the bill, with everything from open-air classical concerts and sweeping operatic epics to spoken word poetry.

Tour de France

This is the world’s most iconic cycling competition. It happens over three weeks and was first held in 1903. Things are a little more high-tech now – back then the cyclists didn’t have support vehicles, and they carried baguettes, wine and cheese for sustenance. They also had some phenomenal moustaches.

Nice Jazz Fest

The Nice Jazz Festival dates back to 1948 and is one of the oldest jazz festivals in   Europe . The first ever headliner was Louis Armstrong and there has been a glut of phenomenal musicians perform since including Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Erykah Badu.

Roland Garros

Also known as the French Open, Roland Garros is one of tennis’s grand slams and the premier clay-court competition in the world. The biggest tennis stars in the world converge on the courts to slug it out but Rafael Nadal will forever be the king.

When is the best time to visit France?

The best time to visit France depends on where you are planning to travel to.

The best time to visit Paris, in terms of sunshine and weather, is early summer and early autumn as the late summer can get quite hot. That said, the winter months are a dark albeit beautiful time to visit, like many European cities. The same applies for most of inland France.

If you’re heading to the east coast and the Mediterranean Sea, the best months are July and August as the sea breeze tends to keep the coast a little cooler than inland. There will, however, be more tourists than in the early summer or spring and autumn.

The mountains are best for skiing in February and March as the days are longer than in December and January, while the late spring, summer and early autumn are perfect for hiking.

The Atlantic areas of Brittany and Normandy are best experienced from June through August as they can get quite wet and cold outside of summer.

Is it safe to visit France?

Yes, it is still safe to visit France, though parts of the country have been affected by various issues of late.

Over the past 5–10 years France has been targeted by extremist groups. These attacks have received widespread global coverage and while they are shocking and saddening, they are also very infrequent. France is at no more risk of extremist violence than any other Western country, but travelers should exercise caution nevertheless and keep up-to-date with local news sources.

Much has also been made of the Yellow Vests Movement, which has spread around the country. These protests began in 2018 after an increase in fuel taxes and have morphed into a movement demanding economic reform and the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron. Though the protests have turned violent on several occasions, particularly in Paris, they are also easily avoided. The protests occur on Saturdays and the streets are shut down by police – travelers should check local news sources and avoid any trouble areas on Saturdays.

Do I need a visa to travel to France?

France is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like France, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in France?

Most restaurants in France will include a service fee within the bill; however, tipping extra (while not absolutely necessary) is customary and will be appreciated by wait staff. Usually rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is sufficient. Feel free to tip more if the service has been exemplary or if you’re feeling generous.

Can I use my cell phone while in France?

Travelers can use their phones throughout France, though remote and isolated areas in the Pyrenees or Alps may have limited service.

You’re able to purchase a local SIM on arriving in France, which will generally be cheaper than using international roaming. If you do wish to use international roaming, ensure it’s activated before leaving your home country and ask your provider what charges apply. Data use can be particularly expensive while overseas.

The French Riviera, including Nice, has a sunnier climate and averages 68–81°F (20–27°C) in the summer and 41–55°F (5–13°C) in winter. This area is quite sheltered compared to the rest of the south-east coast, which will much hotter and dryer in the summer.

Is France safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

France is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers and has always been celebrated for its liberal attitudes towards sexuality. Paris was the first European capital to vote in an openly gay mayor in 2001 and France was the first country in the world, back in 1791, to decriminalize same-sex sexual acts between consenting adults. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2013 and attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ identifying people are generally positive across the country.

Paris has had a thriving queer scene for years which revolves around Le Marais, a district just north of Notre-Dame, though the city is so open that it can be difficult to pin down its epicenter. Active queer scenes can be found in most major cities across the country including Bordeaux and Lyon.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is France accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

France is a relatively accessible destination for travelers with disabilities, particularly for those visiting Paris. All buses and trams in the Paris metro area are equipped for wheelchairs and most, though not all, metro stations have been equipped to make traveling with a disability as hassle-free as possible. The city’s official visitor website has a section dedicated to   visiting Paris with a disability   in both French and English.

Elsewhere, as in much of Europe, travelers may find that the older city buildings and infrastructure in smaller towns may present them with some difficulty, depending on their disability. If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made.

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in France

France is a very liberal country and travelers should not feel compelled to dress particularly conservatively unless visiting a religious site. After all, Paris is the fashion capital of the world – go hard or go home. That being said, Intrepid encourages all travelers to respect the locals in the places we visit. If they wouldn’t wear something, we don’t suggest that you do.

Remember that the weather in the mountains can change extremely quickly, even in summer, so your best bet is dress in layers. If you do plan on visiting the Alps or Pyrenees, be sure to take a raincoat, sturdy walking shoes and a wind breaker or warm jacket.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Biking in France

Discover france.

The best time to visit France depends on what you want to do, and where you want to go - as it's a vast country. Regions such as the French Alps, Loire Valley and French Riviera have their own climates. Nov-April is the winter season, the perfect time for skiing and mountain sports. Late May and June are France’s spring, a great time for walking when the spring flowers are in full bloom.  Autumn is a picture-perfect time to visit the Loire Valley. The Pyrenees is only available for hiking during the months of July – September when the snow has cleared. If you’re heading to the coast, May to July is recommended.

Mountains: Alps & Pyrenees

July, August and September are the months to travel when the snow is gone, and the risk of avalanche is minimal. The French Alps are a haven for avid mountaineers and hikers that want to tick off those classic bucket-list adventures.

Top Tip: We recommend booking the Tour du Mont Blanc at least 6 months in advance, especially for the Classic hut-to-hut itineraries.

Loire Valley

Autumn in the Loire Valley is a must! Although known for its fairy-tale châteauxs, and gardens this is also the land of wine. Red, White, Rose, Sparkling - it has it all. September and October is a time of tranquillity -find yourself surrounded by vineyards, wildflowers and rolling farmlands. The only noise to be heard is the snipping of grapes in the distance.

Top Tip:   Do try Sancerre wine if possible while in the village of Sancerre. It won't disappoint.

Provence is a wine-lovers dream during harvest season. September is generally the month of the grape harvest which makes late-September and early October a great time to visit. The days are warm, and the nights are cool, and most towns in the region will have a harvest festival. It’s not difficult to find a quaint wine bar nestled within the hilltop towns, where you can soak up the buzzing atmosphere.

When is the Best Time to Visit France?

  • The Alps – Walking in the French Alps is an experience that you will never forget. The peace, the scenery, the crisp, ultra-clear air, but again….The Scenery! The Alps are beautiful, snow-capped peaks drop to lush, green valleys divided by glacial blue rivers and lakes. The classic route is the Tour du Mont Blanc , but the GR5 from Lake Geneva to Chamonix is well worth a walk too.
  • Provence – Provence is the French dream made real. The colour palette is stunning, with ochre cliffs towering over fields of lavender, stone perched villages with bright orange roofs, local markets bursting with fresh local produce. Lose yourself (metaphorically, not physically) in Classic Provence or explore the Provençal vineyards on the Provence: Walking and Wine tour
  • Burgundy – Every country has a gastronomic heart. Provence may shout about its great produce, but really when you are looking at quality, Burgundy takes France’s crown. Arguably the finest of France’s wine, coming from just two grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fine dining restaurants stand shoulder to shoulder with rustic bistros. Explore the Burgundy Vineyard Trails to uncover the best of this stunning region of France.
  • Dordogne – Explore rustic France at its very best. The Dordogne is filled with delightful hilltop villages, sweeping valleys, rivers and forest trails. Famous for their truffles and foie-gras, this region can be hedonistic if you want it to be, or you can pare it back and live the simple life. The stunning Hilltop Villages of the Dordogne are well worth exploring.
  • Loire – The Loire Valley is the former home of royalty and the rich and famous of France. A landscape of rolling hills and vineyards, regularly punctuated by the most stunning chateaux you are ever likely to see. Famed for its minerally white wines and the most delicate Sauvignon Blancs in the world, the Chateaux Trail is where you will find a heady mix of all the Loire Valley has to offer.

Five Best Regions to Walk in France

Macs Adventure has been running self guided walking tours in France since 2008 .  Our extensive research on the Tour du Mont Blanc led us to seek out more and more areas where we could help people to discover France on foot.

From humble beginnings, we now send over 2000 walkers to France every year , each walking the route that excites them the most. We provide the freedom to choose your route, itinerary and travel companions and discover France at your own pace.

We know how daunting it can be, setting off on an adventure of this scale and we quickly realised how important it was to have amazing partners on the ground in France to deal with any issues that you might come across.  We are proud to say that we work incredibly closely with all our accommodation suppliers and luggage transfer teams and should you have the slightest issue, they will fall over themselves to help you out.

We book comfortable, friendly overnight accommodation in local B&Bs and guesthouses. On the route, we use high-quality digital mapping as well as the best maps and guidebooks to make sure you find your way.

We love the diversity of walking in France and our main aim is to make sure that you do too.

Adventure Holidays in France

France is a destination with an absolute abundance of adventure, and for many of us, it’s right on our doorstep. No one visit is enough to see all this wonderfully varied country has to offer, it'll entice you back for me.

Follow in the footsteps of legendary adventurers and explore the French Alps, from trekking the  Tour du Mont Blanc  or walking in the Chamonix region to discovering hidden wild corners by hiking in the Ecrins or Queyras - but don't forget that beyond the Alps there are plenty more mountains to be found. Discover the stunning routes that wind across the French Pyrenees , or the rugged, Mediterranean jewel of Corsica where you can take on the challenge of completing the GR20 , the toughest trail in Europe.

Of course, any visit to France is also accompanied by a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that comes with a country which knows how to live the good life. You can soak up its relaxed vibe by immersing yourself in regions such as beautiful Burgundy, but you'll find that on any adventure, be it walking , climbing or cycling , there'll always be time to take part in the essential French experience; sitting outside, sipping a delectable café or world-class wine, and watching the world go by.

We loved the itinerary and the extra sites we visited, also. Our CEO Alexiane did well. We would have like to hear more history of the places we saw. Alexiane took care to provide for the needs of individuals on our tour. That was especially helpful for me. Our bus driver, Frederick, was excellent and caring, too.

What people love about fully guided tours in france.

It was a very comfortable and enjoyable cruise. The service staff were very friendly and attentive. The fellow passengers were very friendly and sociable which makes the whole cruise line one big happy family.
Overall a great tour. Much more than we expected. Highly recommend instead of trying to visit a foreign country without a tour guide and driver-- both of whom were fabulous !!

France Tour Reviews

France - tour highlights and travel tips.

The Eiffel Tower is most visited paid monument in the world. In 2011, 6.98 million people visited it.

There are all kinds of markers for your holiday in France. A wine region, a river, an attraction, a cathedral, an outdoor adventure, urban wonders, just about anything could end up being the highlight of your itinerary. With most cities offering a peek into traditional Europe and all places boasting of fascinating natural beauty, it doesn’t get any better either. Irrespective of where your interests lie, a trip to France always includes arts and architecture. After all, some of the most famous museums, ancient Roman temples, renaissance-era wonders, artworks and landmarks can be found in the country. Considering that its star attraction, the Eiffel Tower, attracts more than 7 million visitors each year, you can understand why trips to this country are always memorable.

Travel Highlights

  • Take in the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower
  • Eat some escargots
  • Watch the sunrise from steps in front of the Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre
  • Listen to the ringing bells at Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Do a wine tasting tour in Burgundy and Bordeaux but areas like Champagne, Rhone Valley and Loire are equally spectacular.
  • Try the mouth watering seafood of Britany and Michelin-stars of Provence to the black truffles of Dordogne
  • Try the distinct cheeses of Burgundy
  • Take a cruise down the Seine
  • Visit the floating monastery of Mont Saint-Michel
  • Stroll through the gardens of the Palace of Versailles

Travel Tips

  • While many French people speak English, they prefer to speak French. The locals really appreciate when tourists make an effort to learn some basic words and phrases.
  • Most French cities, including Paris , can be seen entirely by foot. Pack decent walking shoes and save money on public transit.
  • The French are very polite and expect good manners. Avoid antisocial behaviour like shouting and chewing gum.
  • Unless it’s on your bucket list, skip the Mona Lisa. While the Louvre is well worth a visit (and is free on the first Sunday of each month), this painting can be difficult to see as it is surprisingly small and often surrounded by big crowds snapping photos.
  • Beware pickpockets and sneaky tricks to get your money. Don’t allow a street vendor to help you “try on” a bracelet, and do not pick up “gold” rings you find on the ground - these are common tricks.

France has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit France before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in France, do check out our France Travel Guide for more information.

France is an amazing country to visit, and there may be other key factors that you wish to consider before traveling there. Please check our " France travel guide " which will give you a lot of relevant information about traveling to France.

Tours in France - Questions and Answers

France is a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit France for most travelers is either from April through to June or from October to November. Highlights across the country see less footfall – and therefore shorter queues – during these periods compared to the high summer season between July and September. Temperatures are also more suitable for exploration and hiking during these months, averaging 16°C to 23°C. The winter season, lasting from December to March, is the coldest and the wettest period of the year, although this is the best time to undertake a skiing trip in the Alps or Pyrenees. Find more information here .

France is not the cheapest of European destinations to visit. A combination of high accommodation costs and an amazing range of attractions means budgets often get stretched. Traveling outside of the summer will give a better value for money. Paris is by far the most expensive city in the country. By comparison, food is relatively cheap in neighborhood cafes and restaurants, so you certainly do not have to go hungry! Expect to spend somewhere in the region of USD 210 per person, per day on both food and accommodation.

Travel insurance is an absolute must and needs to include a medical cover that can otherwise top hundreds of thousands of dollars in case of an accident.

The variety of things to do in France , from city sightseeing to riviera stays and vineyard visits, means that we recommend a vacation lasting at least ten days. This is a good amount of time to crisscross the country and tick off highlights without having to dash from place to place. However, if you can only spend one week in France , it is better to limit your trip to a region such as Normandy in the north or  Alsace on the western bank of the River Rhine. If you have more questions, read our travel guide on how many days to spend in France .

There is a stereotypical view of the French as people who refuse to speak English. However, most people in towns and cities – and particularly the younger generation – speak good levels of English. Despite this, it is always better to start your conversation with a few words in French and allow the other person to switch to English on hearing your accent. A phrasebook of the French language is therefore a useful addition to your packing list, and using it will massively enhance your understanding of the country and its culture.

France has an excellent transport infrastructure. High speed trains dart through a network centred around Paris and reach all destinations of significance within the country and outside, including the United Kingdom and Belgium via the Channel Tunnel. The downside is that you must pre-book tickets, and once seats are sold out there is no way of boarding a service. Driving through French roads is a much more relaxed affair than in other European countries since most drivers are considerate. The exception to this rule is Paris, where traffic jams are notorious and parking is often impossible to find. Destinations like Corisca, on the other hand, can be reached via regular ferries from Marseilles and Toulon.

It is considered very impolite to start speaking to anyone providing a service – such as a hotel receptionist, waiter or a shop assistant – without greeting them first. Bonjour (hello) is sufficient. If you are traveling with a group of people, you should greet each person individually on arriving and before departing. Table manners are particularly important, and you should take your time when eating and drinking. Being overly loud or brash is also a no-no. Drunkenness is not tolerated.

A lunchtime meal at an inexpensive restaurant will cost around USD 16 per person excluding alcohol. House wines can be purchased for just a couple of dollars per glass, while a draught beer can be had for around USD 6 per bottle. A three-course evening meal at a mid-range restaurant will set you back by around USD 28 per person, with prices about a third higher in Paris and around popular spots such as restaurants in the main square of Nice.

In addition to visiting France’s world-famous sites, visitors can take advantage of an excellent range of signposted footpaths to discover the country, be it while going on a cross-country hiking trip through the long-distance GR7 or enjoying a gentle stroll in the French countryside. Another popular activity to indulge in during your stay in France is skiing. Along with popular destinations like Val d'Isère and Chamonix, Perpignan, located close to the Pyrenees, is also a great place to tackle snowy slopes on skis or snowboards. Along with all this, cuisine is also an important aspect of any tours to France. Make sure that you try local dishes – accompanied by the superb wines from nearby vineyards – wherever you visit in the country.

Within the intimidating Alps lining France’s backdrop, sunny coastline, bustling tourist-centric cities, and incredibly scenic countryside, you’ll find 67 million locals. And when summer rolls around, an explosion of visitors spread themselves across the country. France boasts of attracting the most tourists per year! In 2018, this country attracted just over 89 million visitors. But most tourists flock to Paris, Marseille, Nice, Cannes, making it possible to find tranquillity somewhere in the Alps or the Pyrenees or in the rolling countryside, where a sprawling of wineries, cozy bed and breakfasts, and farms will introduce you to France’s culture and wonder outside of the noise.

France’s past remains a strong presence today! It’s hard to ignore the 1836-built Arc de Triomphe in Paris, which honours those who battled in Napoleonic wars or the Notre-Dame de Paris or the Palace of Versailles or the longstanding churches peppered across the country. However, the tales of all bloodshed and the battles won and lost are hidden beneath the beauty of France’s buildings, statues, and monuments. You may hear faint murmurings of Joan of Arc, the martyr, during the lengthy Hundred Years’ War. In the 18th century, the French Revolution gave rise to Napoleon Bonaparte, who appointed himself as “first consul,” initiating the end of the war. France then entered the Napoleonic era.

Fast forward, and we arrive at World War I and World War II. During World War I, France joined the United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Japan, and the United States to form the Triple Entente. In World War II, they were one of the Allied powers. But the country was conquered by Germany in 1940, propelling horrible living conditions. This is when Charles de Gaulle stepped in and helped France regain control of their country via the Free France movement.

Nowadays, France remains a member of Nato and sits in a comfortable political and cultural position globally. The current President of France is Emmanuel Macron, who has been in the same position since 2017.

When you travel to France, you’ll definitely want to brush up on some French terms as 88% of the population speaks French. Some of the tourist cities will have a sliver of people who speak English, but for the most part, it’s best to learn some terms. Parisians may mock you for it, but it’s better to be ridiculed than to feel helpless! Do know that for every “rude” Parisian, there are ten kind, welcoming locals.

Okay, now that we’ve covered France’s history and some logistics, let’s get into the fun stuff: choosing where to go and what to do when you travel to France!

Before you start planning your travel adventure in France, you need to pick where to go! And man, does France have options. Find more rugged, backcountry outdoor adventures near Chamonix, Annecy, or Lourdes. For the ultimate snowy escapade, head to Val d'Isère, a quaint mountain village tucked into the Tarentaise Mountains. Discover peace and quiet decorated with rolling green hills in the Loire Valley. And for a fusion of culture, cobblestone streets, and charming scenery, go to Bordeaux, Nice, Aix-en-Provence, and Marseille.

However, no initial trip to France is complete without spending a few days in Paris, replete with stunning architecture, quirky quarters, fascinating people-watching opportunities from a cozy cafe, and an abundance of green spaces tailor-made for wine sipping and baguette munching.

Get to know some of the best places to visit in France before continuing with the trip planning process!

Lace up your hiking boots and get ready to explore the trails carved around Chamonix, a charming mountain town backed by the tallest peak in the Alps: Mont Blanc. You can expect year-round outdoor adventures in Chamonix: bundle up and go skiing in the winter or try out hiking in the summer. Rain, snow, or sunshine, Chamonix remains a loveable, quaint town that boasts of cozy refuge and top-notch hospitality outside of whatever adventure you decide to do.

Annecy may be France's best-kept secret! The scenery, replete with canals crisscrossing amid colourful buildings and the Alps lining the backdrop, is a postcard for idyllic scenery. If Canada's, Banff, and Italy's, Venice, had a kid in France, Annecy would be it.

In the summer, tourists and locals alike flock to Lake Annecy, where water sports and relaxation await.

The French Pyrenees

Lose yourself in the French Pyrenees’ dramatic peaks and mountainscapes .

Outdoor enthusiasts will fall in love with the hiking trails and ski slopes snaking through the phenomenal, rugged scenery. For best places to stay near the French Pyrenees, we suggest Lourdes, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (the starting point for the well-known Camino de Santiago pilgrimage that cuts from France to Spain), or Gavarnie-Gedre, which is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Cirque de Gavarnie .

Val d'Isère

World-class skiing awaits at this quiet ski resort nestled in the French Alps. Even beginners will get a chance to marvel at intimidating mountain views usually reserved for experts and off-piste skiers. The slopes surrounding Val d'Isere may be suitable for everyone, but this area tends to attract a lot of experts and off-piste skiers thanks to the phenomenal conditions and fun, challenging slopes.

Listen up, wine connoisseurs! A collection of rolling, green vineyards skirt Bordeaux, which earns its name as the wine capital. Pair one of these fine wines with the smorgasbord of restaurants peppered throughout Bordeaux : French delights, fusion food, or treats from tasty food trucks. University students flock here, adding to the artistic, creative vibes painted across this lively French city.

Grab a canvas and paint a glimmering seascape, sunshine, and unbelievably tasty and creative street snacks, and you've captured a sliver of Nice. Speaking of art, Nice is famous for drawing in (pun?) artists like Henri Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, and Renoir. Art lovers will want to drop everything and walk through Musées Matisse, Musées Chagall National Museum, and d’Art Moderne.

Loire Valley

Admire the palette of greens, peppered with gothic and renaissance architecture and enchanting vineyards, layered across France’s countryside in the Loire Valley. This area, which spans 280.0 km , is a fairytale setting come to life. While you’re here, you might as well spend hours exploring the scenic countryside by bicycle!

Mercantour National Park

A trip to Mercantour National Park will introduce you to France's rugged side, which often remains a secret under the layers of elegance, dramatic architecture, and charming scenery stretched across the country. This is the ideal place for adventurers seeking hundreds of km of trails carved throughout the Alps, but a lot of these trails aren't your ordinary outdoorsy wander; you'll find a splattering of France's rich history etched into the scenery. The Valley of Wonders boasts of petroglyphs and paintings harking to the Bronze Age.

You'll also spot several mountain refuges dotting Mercantour National Park, which only add to the quiet seclusion and awe that comes with spending time in this area.

French Riviera

While Paris may be the City of Love, the French Riviera is an exhilarating romance. The glistening seascape backed by storied buildings and lively street culture will create stories and memories for years to come. It’s hard not to fall in love with the towns stretching along the French Riviera. Other than Nice, there’s Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Antibes, Monaco, and the list goes on.

Vanoise National Park

Introducing France’s first national park: Vanoise National Park . While we touched on Val d'Isère, one of the ski resorts nestled in Vanoise National Park, we felt it was important to give the entire national park its own section. This scenic national park is known more for its skiing, but you’ll also find several hiking trails winding through the dramatic, sweeping mountain scenery.

We all know about Paris—some people either love it or hate it. Still, it's important to explore the stunning city parks, streets lined with historical architecture and take the time to marvel at the Eiffel Tower on your own before making a judgement about this phenomenal city (we fall into the "love it" category of people).

Castle Chateau De La Loire Loire Valley Chambord

Castle Chateau De La Loire Loire Valley Chambord

France is the hub for everything: outdoor adventure, wine, cultural wanders, seaside escapes, a snowy wonderland when winter hits, and the list goes on. There are a lot of activities worth trying, and we’re going to tell you all about the best things to do in France for outdoor lovers.

Hiking in France

France is home to some of the world's best mountainscapes, such as the Alps and the French Pyrenees. And carved into the dramatic scenery is a network of unforgettable hiking trails and national parks. If you find yourself in Chamonix, the town nestled below the watchful eye of Mont Blanc, you’ll definitely want to try out the short but stunning 6.0 km Grand Balcon Sud Hike .

Heading to the French Pyrenees? More hikes await you here! We suggest checking out the 11.0 km Cagire Loop Hike ! It’s a challenging route, but the views are unbeatable.

Those spending some time in Mercantour National Park will definitely want to try out the Fontanalba Hike to explore the “Valley of Wonders,” where prehistoric drawings and incredible scenery make for one memorable hike.

Amp up the length at Vanoise National Park by taking on the 16.9 km Col d’Aussois & Pointe de l’Observatoire Hike .

Skiing in France

The fact that France is a worldwide hub for skiing is no secret. You can't beat flying down the Alps! For the best skiing opportunities, hit up Val d'Isère in the French Alps, where beginners can enjoy views usually received for black-run or off-piste skiers.

One of the more popular places to ski is Courchevel, a part of Les Trois Vallées, the biggest ski domain globally. You can access 60 lifts here! Outside of the slopes, expect an elegant atmosphere and Michelin-starred dining experiences.

Other notable spots are Chamonix, La Plagne, Les Arcs, and Morzine and Avoriaz resorts, which are part of the Portes du Soleil domain. The Portes du Soleil domain includes resorts that allow for cross-border skiing between France and Switzerland.

Water sports in France

While water sports are probably the last thing on your mind when you go to France, if you ever have a craving for some lakeside or sea activities, you’ll definitely be able find some.

Even when you’re in the water, you can’t escape France’s history! You’ll find a submarine harking to WWII in Saint Tropez, as well as a warship from the 1900s in Cavalaire Bay. Other excellent scuba diving and snorkelling locations include Nice, Antibes, and Saint Maxime.

Want to give canoeing or kayaking a go? The Dordogne River will give you exactly what you need. Meanwhile, surfers can find roaring waves along the French Riviera.

Lake Annecy, dubbed the cleanest lake in Europe, is another great destination for watersports.

Mountain biking and cycling in France

Ditch walking on paths for mountain biking along some unreal trails. Find singletrack trails in Chamonix, fly downhill in Meribel, and cycle above the tree line in Tignes. Seasoned mountain bikers will absolutely love the Grande Traversée du Jura, which covers 380.0 km and takes 7 to 10 days to complete.

For smoother, charming rides, enjoy low-elevation rides in Loire Valley, passing by castles and through lush greenery. Another great option is to start your ride in Petit Lubéron valley and cycle across a 2,000-year-old Roman bridge to Goult, where cafes await, before continuing on to Domaine Ruffinatto, a winery. End your cycle trip at La Bastide de Marie, Ménerbes. This is a 54.0 km point-to-point trip that’s tailored for cycle enthusiasts!

When you think of France, an image of the Eiffel Tower probably comes to mind first, but this popular European country is surprisingly diverse when it comes to the outdoors. Outside of the cities sits a sprawling seascape that includes the Atlantic and Mediterranean and intimidating mountains. However, most of France’s outdoors looks like hills gently undulating across the countryside.

France boasts a canvas of diverse scenery, ranging from the Alps, which border Switzerland and Italy in the southeast, while the south intoxicates with its shimmering coastline. The painting of France continues with the rolling hills sprawled through the north and west.

You’ll find wildlife dotting every corner of France. If you’re in the Pyrenees, you may encounter a genet, a weird but exotic-looking cat-like creature or a bear. There aren’t many bears in the area as they were recently reintroduced, but it’s best to exercise caution and practise bear safety if you do see one. You may also spot chamois, wild goats, in the Pyrenees. In the south and northwest, a green lizard may slither across your path. Golden eagles, wild cats (that look like house cats), wild boars, and wolves roam the north.

The following information on France travel costs is based on numbers from Numbeo , personal experiences from our team at 10Adventures, and other sources. If we were to give any advice about travelling to France, it would be to create a budget, save up before you go, and mentally prepare to spend a lot! But, there are always cheap alternatives. One of our team members’ saved money by buying wine and food from grocery stores, and enjoyed picnics in parks and only stayed in places with a kitchen. However, if you want the true French dining-out and touring experience, you’ll definitely want to save up.

Food and drink

The French restaurant experience is exhilarating. We know this is a weird word to use when talking about dining out, but when you’re scared of speaking French in a North American accent, it can be daunting. However, when everything goes right, the scrumptious plates of food paired with the perfect glass of wine make for an amazing experience. Here are some numbers to consider:

A meal at a cheaper restaurant usually costs around €13 (19.35 CAD), whereas a three-course meal for two at an average restaurant will have you dishing out €50 (75 CAD). However, you can always buy €2 wine and €2 cheese and go to a park whenever you don’t feel like paying for a restaurant.

Transportation

Whether you’re renting a car, taking the train, or taking a taxi or an Uber, you’re going to be paying money to get around France. A one-way ticket for local transport costs around €1.70 (2.5 CAD). 1km in a taxi usually has you paying €1.74 (2.6 CAD) and one litre of gas costs, on average, €1.47 (2.2 CAD).

Accommodation

Hotels in Paris range in price! It all depends on if you want to bask in luxury or go cheap. The average cost ranges from €55 to €350. You can always look to Airbnb, booking.com, vrbo.com, and hostelworld for a wide range of accommodation prices in France.

Best Ways to Get Around France

While we mentioned renting a car, taking the train, taxi, Uber above, there are also other great ways to get around France: Blabla Bus or Flixbus . These buses offer cheap, long-distance travel across the country (or across Europe).

The cheapest way to fly around Europe is via RyanAir . Do note that it almost costs more to put luggage under the plane than it does to fly, so you’ll have to stuff everything in your carry-on or wear layers and layers of clothes.

Excellent car rental companies in France are rentalcars.com and europcar.com . Not in the cards to rent a car? Look to Omnio for the best train and bus deals across France and Europe! You can also buy your train ticket at the station as well.

Mercantour National Park France

Mercantour National Park France

Since France is the most visited country globally, it’s bound to be crowded during the best time to travel here (weather-wise), which is between April to October. If you plan to ski in the Alps in winter and want to hit up Paris on your way in or out, the quieter streets make for a wonderful experience, despite the winter temperatures. Along the Mediterranean coast, France's southeast also boasts ideal summer temperatures from May to September, with mild, rainier (but still sunny) days taking over between October to April.

When it comes to France's travel safety, it’s vital to note that, in general, most people leave without any problems. However, this doesn’t mean you should walk around carelessly, flaunting your cash and fancy devices in back alleys or at night. In recent years, the threat of terrorism has increased, especially in popular tourist areas.

France is located in the Schengen area, meaning that 26 European countries can travel to one another without border control. However, citizens from 68 countries outside of the Schengen area can enter France without a visa and spend 90 days within France and other countries within the Schengen area over 180 days. If you leave the Schengen area to go to England, your time there won’t count towards your 90 days in France, but it will count towards your 180 days.

Determining where you want to stay can sometimes make or break your trip! If you want luxury, you'll need a hotel that provides lavish amenities. If you want a budget hostel, you want to find a spot that will allow you to spend as little as possible on a place you'll rarely be since you'll spend all of your saved up money on anything and everything outside of your tiny room. So, according to your budget, when it comes to the best places to stay in France, where should you go?

Let's get started with some iconic hotels, steeped in history. The ultimate luxurious palace sits in Versailles, where period decor intertwines with upscale modern amenities: Trianon Palace . If you're time in France centres more around where to stay rather than what to do, another epic spot is the sweeping Château de Locguénolé in Brittany. The same family has resided in this charming chateau for 500 years!

Okay. Moving on from the expensive options! To find the best hostel deals in France, take a look at hostelworld , where most nights range between €16.8 (25 CAD) to €33 EUR (50 CAD). Toulouse boasts of lower prices than most places in France. Another place to consider looking up is ibis budget hotels on booking.com .

France travel tip: Choose a place with a kitchen! Discover a range of unique, quirky, luxurious, budget-friendly places on Vrbo.com .

Novotel and Mercure hotel chains sit somewhere on the spectrum between luxury and budget! Pay a little more to stay at the four-star Sofitel or Pullman hotels.

And finally, you can also use Plum Guide, to find some of the best holiday rentals in Paris .

Located in northwest Europe, France is formally known as the French Republic, which is known throughout history as being one of the most significant countries in the western world. Ranked as one of the richest and most powerful countries in the western world, France has historically served as a gateway to southern Europe or the Mediterranean.

The country itself borders the Atlantic Ocean, the alps, the Pyrenees, and the Mediterranean. It also borders a total of six countries (Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. not to mention, France has a large presence of airports, ferry terminals, and an interconnected rail system makes France easily accessible and perhaps the gateway to Europe.

Tens of millions of tourists visit France annually making it one of the most visited countries in the world. Many cities in France are a thrill to explore but Paris seems to draw the largest crowd. France is a country of Passion and many are guaranteed to love it.

Many who return home from France, undoubtedly return with a love of France. The country of France is divided into 22 official regions. All of which have something unique and special to offer.

History in France can be dated back to 200 B.C. it was the Romans who ruled the country for over 500 years until the 5th century, A.D. it wasn’t until 1770 when the famous Marie Antoinette married King Louis the 16th and became the last queen of France before the french revolution in 1789. Since then the country has flourished as a republic and has become one of the most powerful countries in the world.

Now everyone knows France for Paris and yes Paris is an amazing place to visit or perhaps can be a bucket-list destination for some. However, there is so much more to France than just Paris. As specified earlier, France has 22 different regions to explore and each region offers something completely different from the next. If you haven’t already, watching films set in France is a good way to familiarize yourself with them.

Now you may be wondering since France is so accessible, why do I need to book a multiday tour when I can just plan it myself? Well, yes you could plan it yourself but it can be very overwhelming or time-consuming to figure out all of the best spots and regions you want to visit. Choosing different activities to partake in for your adventure can also be tough.

That’s why it’s recommended to leave it to the experts and let them plan your holiday. Perhaps choosing a multiday tour can even take you to places you’ve never even heard about or activities you didn’t know existed. Those are always the best adventures to have.

So, much as we have done for the best Australia tours and best Guatemala tours , here we are going to be talking about one of the best France tours (and their operators), so you can be inspired – and then choose with confidence.

With that being said, here’s a look at the best tours in France!

River trips and adventure for two in Occitanie

Inspiration

Occitanie Nature and Outdoor Activities Couples

Le port du Somail, Aude, Occitanie.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 22 May 2023, updated on 16 April 2024

Occitanie is the destination of choice for many couples who want to relax and unwind in nature while enjoying water activities. The region's rivers are ideal for adventure sports such as canoeing, kayaking and rafting, for a cruise on the Canal du Midi or a boat trip on the Lot.

Cruise together on the Lot

Navigation à Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

Taking a cruise on the River Lot is a romantic experience that we highly recommend. Admiring the cliffs, oak-covered hills and vineyards of Cahors with a glass of Malbec in hand offers unforgettable moments for a couple looking to disconnect from daily life. No previous skills are required to hire a boat. For many people it's an adventure that allows them to break away from their daily routine, performing simple manoeuvres such as docking at the ports of Cahors, Luzech and Larnagol and passing through the river's 17 locks.

Bathing in the river can also be a refreshing experience for couples, which can be topped off with a delicious meal in a Lot restaurant, accompanied, of course, by a local wine. Cruises on the Lot can be from three nights to two weeks or more, between April and October. Boat rental companies are located in Cahors, Bouziès, Douelle and Luzech.

Cycling tours in Lot

A vélo dans les vignes - Véloroute Vallée du Lot.

If you hire a boat, don't forget to take a few bikes with you as, once ashore, cycling is the perfect way to get to know some of the surrounding towns. One of these is Cahors, nestled in a meander of the Lot at the heart of the valley: overlooking the river, the 14th-century Valentré Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela.

You're also sure to fall under the spell of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a completely preserved medieval village built against a rock face 100 metres above the river, which forms a surprisingly harmonious whole. We recommend a walk along the towpath of the Ganil, 6 kilometres downstream from Saint-Cirq, whose wall is decorated with a contemporary fresco by Toulouse sculptor Daniel Monnier.

Romantic walks on the Canal du Midi

Sur le Canal du Midi, en Capestang - Aude.

When Pierre-Paul-Riquet designed the Canal du Midi in the 17th century to link the Garonne to the Mediterranean, he had no idea that this waterway would become a major tourist attraction centuries later. Many visitors come from far and wide to sail on this prestigious construction, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. A couples' boat trip on the Canal du Midi is a unique and romantic experience, where you will discover ancient towpaths, flower-decked locks and secluded marinas from a fully equipped boat. As on the Lot, you don't need a licence to hire a boat and cruise the Canal du Midi. All you need is the desire to enjoy yourselves!

When to cruise on the Canal du Midi

Canal du Midi.

The Canal du Midi is navigable from the end of March to the beginning of November and cruises can last from a weekend to two weeks or more. There are several companies specialising in boat hire (Le Boat, Nicols, Navicanal and Locaboat Holidays, among others) which are located in various places such as Port-Lauragais, Negra, Castelnaudary, Carcassonne, Argens, Lattes and the port of Le Somail.

While on a boat trip on the Canal du Midi, you'll be amazed by the varied and colourful landscapes of the departments of Aude, Haute-Garonne and Hérault. That's why we recommend making day trips to explore places like Toulouse, Villefranche-de-Lauragais, Castelnaudary (birthplace of cassoulet) and some of the red-brick or golden stone villages of the Midi Toulousain and Narbonnaise. Don't miss the Naurouze threshold, which marks the highest point of the canal, and the Fonséranes locks in Béziers.

Exploring Occitanie's rivers

Promenade en canoë à Axat dans l'Aude.

If you like adventure, the Occitanie region offers adrenaline-filled experiences. For canoeing and rafting enthusiasts, the gorges of the Tarn and its tributaries, the Jonte and the Durbie, are exceptional places to descend. As well as enjoying the white water, you can admire a spectacular landscape of cliffs, breaches and overhangs. The canyons of Aude, Dordogne and Lot are also perfect for adventure sports, as are those of Aveyron, which combine thrills with charming villages such as Najac or Bruniquel.

White water activities are, of course, a tradition in the Pyrenean departments of Occitanie. The Gave de Pau, which rises in the Gavarnie cirque, and the Neste, whose tumultuous waters cross the Aure and Louron valleys, are two of the favourite sites for rafting, canoeing and hydrospeed enthusiasts. Near the Mediterranean, the Gardon and Hérault gorges are also ideal for adventure sports.
