15 Free Things to Do on the Sunshine Coast

Updated August 2023

' src=

At heart, both the husband and I are budget travellers.

Not ‘budget’ as in staying at the cheapest of the dingiest hostels for the sake of saving a few dollars but ‘budget’ as in free and fun .

Good thing that most outdoor activities are naturally free (once you have the equipment, that is), or I’d have serious budget headaches!

So, what can you do for free on the Sunshine Coast?

Quite a lot, it turns out.

FREE AND FUN ACTIVITIES ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

There are lots of free and fun things to do on the Sunshine Coast, and the good news is that these are not just outdoor activities. Though a lot are, let’s just be upfront.

I’ve listed them in random order, whatever popped into my head first.

1. VISIT A MARKET

I love strolling around markets, preferably those that sell yummy food (fresh and prepared) and not just random junk. I’ve picked up some of the best pickles, jams and biscuits at markets over the years.

So, you could visit Eumundi Market , arguably the Sunshine Coast’s most famous, for a bit of both (random weird stuff, some great craft and artists’ work, and lots of food).

Eumundi Market

Or try Cotton Tree Market for an abundance of knick-knacks and a little bit of food. This is where I go to buy local soap bars. 😀

If a farmers market is more your thing, I really like the Kawana Farmers Market . It’s got a great locals feel. The one at Fisherman’s Road in Maroochydore isn’t half bad either but gets very busy and there can be a lot of rusty junk there, too. I’ve also heard good things about the Noosa Farmers Market but have never been myself.

The Caloundra Street Fair is on every Sunday but I’m still to have a wander there myself. On the last Friday of each month, there’s also a twilight market in Caloundra.

The night market at Ocean Street in Maroochydore used to be a fabulous one too but it hasn’t been on in ages.

  • Noosa Farmers Market : Sundays, 6am-12pm
  • Eumundi Market : Wednesdays, 8am-2pm, and Saturdays, 7am-2pm
  • Cotton Tree Market : Sundays, 7am-12pm
  • Fishermans Road Market : Sundays, 6am-12pm
  • Kawana Farmers Market : Saturdays, 6am-12pm
  • Caloundra Street Fair : Sundays, 8am-1pm

2. STROLL THROUGH A BOTANIC GARDEN

There’s not just one botanical garden on the Sunshine Coast, no, we have three. Two of them are free and fun while the Maleny Botanical Garden is private and thus fee attached.

  • Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens , Tanawha: Quiet and a great spot if you want more of a bushland experience. Has BBQs and a fun kids walk.
  • Noosa Botanic Gardens : A more “manicured” and varied botanic garden, and beautifully situated at Lake MacDonald. The grounds make for a great stroll around, including to a lily pond, an amphitheatre and lots of spots for picnics.

Noosa Botanic Gardens

Which leads me to my next freebie activity…

3. HAVE A PICNIC

I love picnics.

I think it’s because we didn’t really go to restaurants much when I was a child, and we’d always bring our own food on outings and eat outdoors.

And somehow food always tastes better outdoors. Unless it’s off, of course.

Wappa Dam

So here are some of the places that I like for having a picnic. They all have public BBQs. (And no, no beaches, I don’t like sand in my food, thank you.)

  • Wappa Dam, Nambour : A personal favourite. I really like the park and I’ve had some great laughs there with friends.
  • Buderim Village Park : Great views and lots of lawn to lounge around. I’m also partial to the Lions Park in Buderim (more great views and picnic tables).
  • Cotton Tree Park : A very popular park, rightly so, along the Maroochy River.
  • Glass House Mountains Lookout, near Beerburrum : Not a ton of space but fabulous views of the Glass House Mountains. Skip the walk unless you need some exercise.
  • Alexandra Headlands Park : Very popular spot these days, particularly for sunset drinks.
  • Mary Cairncross Reserve , near Maleny : A great park with even greater views of the Glass House Mountains.

4. HIKE TO A WATERFALL

The Sunshine Coast doesn’t have the incredible waterfalls that the Gold Coast Hinterland boasts but we still have some lovely ones. They’re best after rainfall, otherwise all you might see is a tiny trickle.

  • Kondalilla Falls , near Montville: The largest of the falls on the Sunshine Coast, can be gushing after heavy summer rainfall. There’s a rockpool you can swim in (if the water is flowing). The hike to the base of the falls involves many steps and is about 5km around.
  • Serenity Falls , Buderim: If it’s quiet, they’re beautiful but these falls are well-known so it’s unlikely that you’ll be there by yourself. Some gorgeous rainforest though and a pretty bridge from which you can admire the waterfall.
  • Gherulla Falls , near Mapleton: Not as spectacular as either Kondalilla or Serenity Falls but if you want a longer hike, this is a good choice. Definitely more than a trickle after heavy rains.

Serenity Falls, Buderim

5. CLIMB A MOUNTAIN

Since we’re talking physical exercise, climbing a mountain on the Sunshine Coast is nowhere near as strenuous as you might expect. You don’t have to tackle the hard ones like Beerwah or Tibrogargan (both can be dangerous and should only be attempted if you have rock scrambling and climbing skills).

Instead try Mount Coolum (easier than you might think), Ninderry , Beerburrum or Mount Ngungun in the Glass House Mountains.

Sunset from Mount Ninderry

For something really easy, give Mount Tinbeerwah near Noosa a go, it’s only 1km return.

6. MARVEL AT THE RAINFOREST

There are pockets of beautiful rainforest all around the Sunshine Coast, and you don’t even have to work hard to see it.

Some of my favourite short rainforest walks include:

  • Rainforest Walk at Mary Cairncross Reserve
  • Buderim Forest Walk
  • Wompoo Circuit , Mapleton Falls National Park: You get dry sclerophyll forest as well as rainforest here.

Piccabeen palms, Mapleton Falls National Park

7. VISIT A MUSEUM

So what do you when it’s raining?

Well, rainforests are pretty great in the rain, too, minus the leeches, they can be pesky. If you want to stay indoors, you could visit a free gallery or historic museum.

  • Caloundra Regional Gallery : This is actually quite a big gallery (for a regional museum) with rotating exhibitions. It’s usually free unless there’s a special exhibition. Open Mon-Fri, 10-4pm, and Sat-Sun, 10-2pm.
  • USC Art Gallery : The University also has an art gallery. It’s a small space but they tend to exhibit very interesting pieces. Open Mon-Fri, 10-4pm, and Saturdays, 10-1pm.
  • Yandina Historical House : I haven’t actually been here but the historic house now functions as the information centre, art gallery, café as well as a museum showing some historical displays on the area and the house. Open Mon-Fri, 10-1pm (shop and café open slightly longer).
  • Rainforest Discovery Centre, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve : Interactive eco-information centre that’s great for the whole family. The boardwalk is especially fun! Open 7 days, 9:30-3:30 pm.

Information Centre at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

8. LISTEN AND LEARN AT A TALK AT THE LIBRARY

Going to a talk or workshop at the Sunshine Coast Libraries is actually really great.

I’ve learnt heaps about digestive and other health issues, photography, reducing waste, and more at talks at the library. I’ve even spoken about my life in Australia at a multicultural workshop once.

Events filled up quickly so you do need to pounce as soon as talks and workshops are announced. But if you’re not too concerned about the location, you can often get a spot at some of the smaller branches, e.g. in Beerwah.

Library in Maleny

To attend, you need to be a library member but it’s free and you can easily sign up online when you register.

Find out What’s on at the Sunshine Coast Libraries.

9. GO ON A LONG (OR SHORT) HIKE

We have a fair few short and long hikes on the Sunshine Coast, and obviously they’re all free. There should be enough to keep you busy for a few days!

If you just want a stroll, anywhere along the Coastal Pathway is great but I especially like the Caloundra to Currimundi section, Mooloolaba to Cotton Tree, or around Coolum Beach. The boardwalk section there is great!

If you want a longer hike, you can’t go past the Coastal Track in Noosa National Park or Trachyte Circuit in the Glass House Mountains .

There are plenty more so check out my posts below if you want to tackle a few.

10. take a scenic drive.

If hiking is too much exercise for you (or it’s just too hot), go on a scenic drive around the Sunshine Coast.

  • Glass House Mountains : Meander around the volanic outcrops better known as the Glass House Mountains; you can take in some viewpoints and stop at a café or two for a coffee and more.
  • Blackall Ranges : To see some fantastic views of the coast from the hinterland, do the Blackall Ranges scenic drive that takes you into Mapleton, Montville and Maleny.
  • Mary Valley : For a scenic drive that explores more of the rural hinterland and heads out towards Kenilworth (great cheese there!), explore the Mary Valley Tourist Drive.

Road through Kenilworth

11. SEE A BIG “P” THING

If you’re a collector of big things, here’s your chance to see the Big Pineapple or the Big Pelican .

Located at Woombye near Wildlife HQ Zoo (Nambour Road), the Big Pineapple was once the showpiece of a giant pineapple plantation. Open every day (9-4pm) but sadly, you can’t climb to the top at present. That’s really the best part. 🙁

Big Pineapple, Sunshine Coast

And while we’re talking pineapple, you should probably try some local ones (though, admittedly, they’re not generally free).

The Big Pelican is found along the Noosa River in Noosaville’s Lion Park (along Gympie Terrace).

12. GO FOR A SWIM

Needless to point out that are a million and one spots for having a swim or a surf on the Sunshine Coast.

But I’m neither a water baby nor am I into swimming in the ocean. Plus, the open beaches on the coast can be quite rough and full of gutters.

That said, I do also like to cool down on those hot summer days so here are some of my favourite places for a cooling but calm swim :

  • Cotton Tree Park / River: Possibly one of the busiest spots these days but swimming in the Maroochy River here is so much easier and calmer than around the corner at Maroochydore Beach.
  • Chambers Island, Maroochydore: Also on the Maroochy River but further upstream (off Duporth Avenue); very popular but great fun and accessible via a foot bridge.
  • Currimundi Lake: Further south towards Caloundra, Currimundi Lake is a good spot for a calm swim.
  • Kings Beach Ocean Pool, Caloundra: Public tidal pool with sun shades and a water fountain for kids, open 4:30am-9pm

Kings Beach Ocean Pool, Caloundra

13. WATCH THE SUNRISE OR SUNSET

I’ve seen some pretty amazing sunsets on the Sunshine Coast, there are just so many great spots.

Obviously, you won’t see the sun setting unless you’re facing somewhat west but you can still get some gorgeous sunset hues over the ocean.

free places to visit sunshine coast

Try these sunrise or sunset spots on the Sunshine Coast:

  • Mount Tinbeerwah, Noosa : Depending on the time of year, you can see the sunrise. Generally good for sunset.
  • Mount Coolum or Mount Ninderry : Sunrise or sunset. Bring a torch to avoid stumbles.
  • Alex Headland Park : Very popular for sunset drinks, especially on weekends.
  • Maroochy River Mouth, Cotton Tree : Another popular spot for sunset drinks.
  • La Balsa Park, Buddina : Great spot for both sunrise or sunset.
  • Mount Ngungun, Glass House Mountains : Popular for both sunrise and sunset, bring a torch.
  • Wild Horse Mountain Lookout (Bruce Highway): Panoramic sunset views over the Glass House Mountains.

14. go kayaking.

Obviously, kayaking is only free if you already have a kayak (or canoe / SUP). But if you do, here are some fabulous places for paddling on the Sunshine Coast.

You can also rent kayaks in Caloundra and Golden Beach, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore, and Noosa.

  • Noosa: Noosa River, Noosa Everglades (Cooloola), Lake MacDonald, Lake Cootharaba, Lake Weyba
  • Mooloolaba/Maroochydore: Maroochy River Canoe Trail, Maroochy Water Canals, Mooloolah River (incl. Mooloolaba Canals and Kawana Canals)
  • Mudjimba: Twin Waters Canals, Bill Kear Waterway
  • Landsborough: Ewen Maddock Dam
  • Maleny: Baroon Pocket Dam
  • Caloundra: Currimundi Lake, Pumicestone Passage

Mooloolaba Canals

15. GO FOR A BIKE RIDE

The Sunshine Coast isn’t as incredible for recreational bike riding like places such as Melbourne or Vancouver might be. But there are still plenty of routes you can explore, whether you’re looking for an easy ride or more of a challenge.

The best place for fun bike riding on the Coast is the Coastal Pathway .

This track stretches from Pelican Water (in the south) to Tewantin (in the north). Some sections are really fantastic but other bits aren’t quite properly connected (yet).

Boardwalk, Coastal Pathway, Coolum Beach

The best thing is to just pick a starting point and start riding as far as you want, then turn around.

If mountain biking is more your thing, there are a fair few trails in the hinterland. Check out the Bushrangers (Sunshine Coast MTB club) for more details.

So, that’s it, 15 different kinds of activities you can enjoy for free on the Sunshine Coast!

If I’ve missed your favourite activity or place, do let me know in the comments below. 🙂

15+ awesome free things to do on the sunshine coast.

Like it? Feel free to share!

Looking for some fun in the Sunshine Coast sun? We’ve got you covered. From markets to beaches and everything in between with some great free things to do on the Sunshine Coast.

Where is the Sunshine Coast?

The stunning Sunshine Coast is located in South East Queensland, just north of Brisbane. This region has 60km of coastline and spans into stunning, lush hinterland. It starts from Caloundra in the south, up to the Great Sandy National Park in the north. With that much ground to cover, you can bet that there are plenty of places to enjoy free things to do on the Sunshine Coast.

Some of the most popular coastal towns on the Sunshine Coast include Noosa, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. In the hinterland, Nambour and Maleny are the major centres. However, given its popularity, there are new townships opening up constantly.

When to visit the Sunshine Coast

Despite its name, it’s not always sunny on the Sunshine Coast.  Although the locals might convince you otherwise. Beautiful one day, perfect the next goes the tag line, but there are definitely different versions of perfect.

The busiest time to visit the Sunshine Coast is during summer (December to February), and particularly during the school holidays from Christmas until the end of January. The days are warm and long, and the beaches are buzzing with activity. It’s often really humid during this period as well, so if you’re not a fan of the heat, you may want to avoid this time completely.

The shoulder periods of autumn (March to May) and Spring (September to November) bring a good balance of fairly warm weather and fewer crowds. You’ll probably find accommodation is cheaper at this time too. During autumn the water is still really warm, so a good time for swimming too.

Winter on the Sunshine Coast (June to August) can also be a really busy time, as Aussies in the southern states seek some more warmth and sunshine. However the nights in particular can still get cold, so don’t go thinking you can leave the winter woollies at home! This is the perfect time to do some of the hikes that we’ve listed below.

So once you’ve worked out when to go, what sort of free things on the Sunshine Coast await?

Free things to do on the Sunshine Coast

#1 visit the eumundi markets.

The Eumundi Markets are a twice weekly market in – you guessed it – the town of Eumundi. They call themselves “the biggest and the best artisan market in Australia.” From hand-made clothes, homewares, spices and jams, this is a great place to shop locally. However, if you’re after a free activity on the Sunshine Coast, this is a perfect spot for browsing too. With street performers and buskers dotted throughout the market, you’re sure to be entertained as well.

The markets are open on Wednesdays from 8am to 2pm and Saturdays from 7am to 2pm. Check the Eumundi Markets website for up to date details.

#2 Get a photo in front of the Big Pineapple

Visiting a “big thing” is a quintessential part of an Aussie road trip. These giant structures can be found all across the country. They generally represent what an area if famous for, such as the fruit that is harvested in the area. Or, they can just be some Aussie novelty.

The Big Pineapple is arguably Queensland’s best “big thing”. It’s situated in the town of Woombye, along the Nambour Connection Road. At 16 metres high, it’s hard to miss.

The great news is you can visit for free! Pull up in the parking lot and get a photo in front of the Big Pineapple .

If you like ‘big things’ and other landmarks, check out our article on our favourite landmarks in Australia.

#3 Stroll along the Mooloolaba boardwalk

With over 60km of coastline, it’s a good bet you’re going to find some amazing coastal walks. The boardwalk along Mooloolaba is one of my absolute favourites.

The Sunshine Coast Council has been upgrading the foreshore along Mooloolaba for a few years. Towards the north there is an incredible viewing platform at Alex Bluff Foreshore Park. Here you can take in views of Point Cartwright and Mooloolaba Beach.

Towards the south, I love the pram friendly section at the Spit. At 3.4 metres wide and surrounded by trees it provides a pleasant area for a family stroll.

#4 Head to one (or more) of the 30+ beaches

With a reputation for sun, sea and surf, it’s no surprise you’re going to find a lot of beaches along the Sunshine Coast. There are in fact, more than 30! As a fun and free thing to do on the Sunshine Coast, why not try and tick off all them?

If time is not up your sleeve, make a beeline to the best beaches on offer. According to Tripadvisor, the number 1 beach on the Sunshine Coast is Mooloolaba Beach. This is my favourite too. Other fantastic beaches to check out include Noosa Main Beach and King’s Beach in Caloundra.

Like all of Australia, there are patrolled and unpatrolled beaches along the coast. If you fancy a dip, find a patrolled beach and swim between the flags!

A tree in the foreground of a long stretch of beach

#5 Have a picnic at Mary Cairncross Reserve

The Mary Cairncross Reserve hosts a subtropical rainforest with some stunning views across to the Glass House Mountains. Pack a picnic before you leave home and you can dine outside on the lovely grounds. Afterwards, head off through the rainforest on one of the walking tracks. There are suitable options for those with a stroller too.

It is free entry into the Mary Caincross Reserve, although a gold coin donation is appreciated. Check the website for opening times.

A lone tree stands in a field with the Glasshouse mountains in the background

#6 Browse the cute shops in Montville

There’s no better place for window shopping on the Sunshine Coast than Montville. This picture perfect town in the hinterland has a main street full of cute shops. Head to the Clock Shop which is housed in a European inspired chalet. Have a browse through an art gallery and an antique store. If you’re out and about with kids, they’ll love the puzzle and games shop.

Before you head out, check out this list of Montville shops to make sure you tick off all the best ones.

#7 Walk around Chambers Island

Chambers Island is a local’s hidden gem. Located in Maroochydore, in the middle of the Maroochy River, this tiny island feels a world away from the tourist heavy beaches. With a footbridge over from the mainland, this spot is super accessible. It’s a great spot to play some water sports and go fishing. There’s a little playground for the kids and some picnic benches and BBQ facilities.

Chambers island walkway - Free things to do on the Sunshine Coast

#8 Visit Point Cartwright

Located in Buddina, Point Cartwright has a lighthouse and a stunning panoramic view of the coastline. Walk along the coastal track through La Balsa Park, with views across to Mooloolaba. Once you reach the point you can then walk on the beach side looking south. It’s a fantastic spot at sunset and a real favourite amongst Sunshine Coast locals.

#9 Walk through the Buderim Forest Park

Looking to escape the heat with a walk through a lush rainforest? Head to Buderim Forest Park . With a well maintained walkway and boardwalk, plus a picturesque bridge, the highlight here is the beautiful waterfall. Look out for the diverse birdlife too.

#10 Visit a weekend market

We know we already had a visit to the Eumundi Markets listed above, but that’s because it deserves its own feature! If you’re on the Sunshine Coast, head out to at least one other market, as it’s a great way to enjoy the region’s vibrant culture and produce. Some of my favourites include the Caloundra Street Fair and Cotton Tree Markets . If you’re lucky, you might even spot our niece who regularly busks at these markets!

#11 Visit the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden

If you’re looking to enjoy some native flora and fauna, head to the botanic gardens in Tanawha. Here you’ll find 82 hectares of beautiful gardens. You could take a self-guided tour on one of the walks through the gardens, and view the sculptures spread throughout. Pack a picnic to make the most of the peaceful atmosphere and this free day out on the Sunshine Coast.

The gardens are open from 7am to 5pm (April to October) and 7am to 6pm (November to March).

#12 Walk the Noosa National Park Coastal Track

This stunning coastal track in Noosa takes you right along the coastline, offering breathtaking views out across the ocean. There’s a well maintained path that is pram and wheelchair friendly. Head there at sunrise to avoid the crowds.

#13 Go for a swim at Lake Currimundi

Another one of the local favourites, a visit to Lake Currimundi is a fantastic free thing to do on the Sunshine Coast. The waters here are very calm, so it’s a great spot to visit with kids, or to go kayaking or stand up paddleboarding.

Looking to visit somewhere further afield in Queensland? Check out some of our other articles about the sunshine state.

#14 Hike up Mount Coolum

If you really want to get your heart racing, take a hike up to the top of Mount Coolum . Here you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Sunshine Coast, all for free! Mount Coolum is a 25 million year old vocanic dome, with some of the best views of the coast. A word of warning though – it’s a challenging walk and should only be attempted by those that are reasonably fit.

#15 Visit the local library

If you’re a local looking for something free to do, particularly on a rainy day, head to one of the local libraries. They’re free to join and often have free events and activities too. Click here to find out if there is anything interesting for you to attend. If you have young kids, the Storytime events are fantastic.

#16 Free community events

Make sure to keep an eye out for some of the free community events that pop up throughout the year on the Sunshine Coast. These local events often showcase local talent and cuisine. Have a search through Facebook events or check out the local Facebook groups .

We hope you enjoy your time visiting the beautiful region of the Sunshine Coast.

The Ginger Factory

With free admission, The Ginger Factory is a great place to visit if the weather decides not to cooperate with your trip. This is one of the world’s largest ginger factories, and it’s stationed within some beautiful gardens to explore. There are some great play structures for the kids and even a life-sized Chutes and Ladders game. If you’re in need of a snack, check out the Ginger Cafe.

Right across the road from The Ginger Factory sits Nutworks. Here, you will find all sorts of macadamia nut products, and will even have the opportunity to see how the nuts are processed. They have macadamia nuts of all flavors and forms. From chocolate macadamias, to barbecue macadamias, to honey roast, and hickory. You’ll also find macadamia oils, lotions, shower gels, and more. And never fear- there are plenty of free samples to try!

Free Things to do Sunshine Coast _Nutworks

Noosa National Park

There is a lot to do in Noosa National Park. With several walking tracks of varying lengths and difficulty levels, you could easily spend the whole day here! There are also great picnicing areas and lots of opportunity for wildlife viewing. If you’re lucky, you may even get to catch a pod of humpback whales swimming up the coast!

Noosa National Park

Mount Coolum

Hiking Mount Coolum was fairly intense for me, but there were some nutjobs running up and down the mountain as their morning exercise. Summiting the mountain gives you incredible views over the Sunshine Coast, out over the Pacific Ocean. I highly recommend waking up early, bringing a flashlight and hiking up the mountain before sunrise. That view is crazy worth it!

Kondalilla Falls

There are several waterfalls around the Sunshine Coast that are free to visit and are great to add to your itinerary.  Located in Kondalilla National Park, Kondalilla Falls are popular in the Sunshine Coast area. The walk down to the base of the falls is absolutely gorgeous, but the hike back up may be a bit much for some people. You can easily spend a whole afternoon within Kondalilla National Park. I suggest visiting during the rainy season, when the falls are at their fullest.

Gardner Falls

Gardner Falls is an area favorite. It is nestled in the bush, but requires only a short walk to access it. Along with the waterfall, there is a large swimming hole and ropes to help you swing into the water. There is also a great grassy area close by for picnics or sunbathing.

Buderim Forest Waterfall

The hike to Buderim Forest Waterfall is easy and picturesque. There are plenty of places on the walk where you can stop, play in the stream, and hunt for small crawfish. You will pass a series of small waterfalls as you make your way to Buderim Forest Waterfall . The falls pour into a shallow wading pool you can enjoy, or you can continue your hike upwards for more views of the fall.

Glasshouse Mountains

The Glasshouse Mountains are a series of eleven large hills that dot the inland area of the Sunshine Coast. They were named The Glasshouse Mountains by Captain James Cook, because he thought they resembled the glass furnaces back in England. You can climb each individual mountain, if that’s your thing, but there are also some great views of the mountain range in the nearby Beerwah State Forest.

Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens

If you’re looking for an easy afternoon activity, try heading over to the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens. This is a nice, quiet place to relax and spend time in nature. There are lots of low-key walks around the gardens you can take. Check out the sculpture garden to see some great artwork integrated with nature.

These are all great suggestions. Who doesn’t love free activities? I’m visiting two countries in May, and I’ve been searching for free activities because I’m going to spend so much visiting the first country.

That’s how I like to travel too. The free-er the better 😉

Aw this bring back such nice memories of when I spent 6 months in Australia. I loved the Sunshine Coast.

Australia is just the best 🙂

The ginger experience is definitely something I’ll enjoy on my next trip! Thanks for it!

I love beaches and you have given great suggestions what to do at the coast. The free suggestions are obv the stuffs to look out for.

Totally agree!

So much beautiful outdoor hikes and national parks like Noosa National Park make it all great! I would love to hit the beaches there but just to sit by the water and catch a glimpse of the whales would be awesome

I love that you provided so many budget tips in an otherwise expensive place. I’ve never heard of a ginger factory before! I love ginger – ginger tea, using ginger in stir fry, etc. and would love to check out how it is made! The nut factory sounds really interesting too. And of course I would love to visit the beautiful beaches and waterfalls. I still have yet to make it to Australia but am dying to go.

Australia is high on our list of places we’d love to see! This is a long list of wonderful sights…we travel with the kids and I can only imagine how much fun a life sized game of Chutes and Ladders would be! We would all enjoy that one!

On another note…I have a list of travel blogs that use commentluv. Would you like to be added?

Never heard of Nutworks! How cool. I love Australia. The botanical gardens is definitely on my list! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Last time I was in Australia I was too young to remember anything! When I go back (and I will go back), I will definitely hit the Sunshine Coast and I’ll be sure to return to your great list of free things to do there!

Thanks for these great tips for free things to do on the Sunshine coast. We’re hoping to visit later this year. What is the best time of year to visit to get the best weather and smallest crowds?

Australia was the first country we visited over 10 years ago and now that one is much better informed, I really do want to go again. It deserves so much more time and deeper travel. These are great ideas to add.

My friend recently moved to Australia and seeing her snapchats makes me wanna go so bad! The beaches look absolutely amazing! Ive never heard of a Ginger Factory! That looks fun too!

Noosa National Park looks beautiful!! As do the rest of the outdoor activities; I’d love to visit Australia in the next couple years, but the long flight from the USA does not seem fun. Also, the chocolate macadamia nuts sound so good right now!

Free activities are the best! These tips will come in handy as Australia is pretty expensive. + I love the beach and hiking!

It is always nice when it is possible to find activities that do not cost a fortune when traveling. It is also these that are for free that usually makes the biggest impression. Who would not like a visit of a national park? And it is nice to see when nature is still for free. 🙂

Great list! I loved Australia when I was there a few years ago but you are right, it is definitely not a cheap destination! Hiking is always a good option and I would definitely want to check out Nutworks.

First thing that came to my mind when I read ginger factory, was redhead girls 😛 It could have been my favorite place on earth ahahah In lack of those, I see there are still beautiful places to wander around and since I like waterfalls, I’d check them all for sure! And a cool ginger beer on the beach on the sunset, yeah!

Love the nature in this part of the world!!! Perfect way to relax – hiking and beach! I hope to visit one day.

Australia looks so damn beautiful! I should pack up and leave California right now. Noosa National Park looks like a place I’d definitely like to set foot on.

Whooaaa thank you for this list! I always love list of free things to do in places since I am a budget traveler. Will definitely bookmark this for future references!

Free things are the best things!

What a beautiful place – wildlife, beaches, nut factory, ginger factory…waterfalls….this place has it all. And that too, free! Will be recommending it to people who are heading there.

I can’t wait to visit Australia. I love free things to do haha so I’ll be sure to use this guide when I go!

Beaches have always been my go to places whenever I visit coastlines. Ginger factory seems pretty interesting and I would love going nuts over NUTS. Mount Coolum and Kondalilla Falls are absolutely scenic. Beautiful!

I did not know about the Sunshine coast when I visited Australia. So many fun things to do. Also it is the first time I am hearing about the Ginger factory. I loved Macademia nuts and I would never leave the factory if I had the opportunity.

We were just in Australia, and you’re right it was not cheap. It was beautiful and definitely worthwhile though, and free things are always welcome. We went to the Gold Coast instead of the Sunshine Coast, but your post makes me wonder if we chose the right one, it’s beautiful.

Great ideas! I hope to hit up Sunshine Coast one day. It’s on my wish list and looking at some of the photos, it has us wetting my lips.

I would love to visit Australia. It must be a really interesting country to see! I haven’t been there but I have it in my mind all the time. Noosa National Park looks magical 🙂

It’s amazing all the free things you can do in each travel destinations. Sometimes the free stuff isn’t that great but these ones on the sunshine coast are well worth it. Doing free stuff helps to balance out the cost of an expensive meal or accommodation.

Excellent, free attractions are always a plus on my list!

Oh this makes me want to head back to Australia so badly! A ginger factory?! I’m oddly obsessed with ginger and would absolutely love that. Of course beaches and waterfalls are amazing too. I haven’t been since I was 12 and now im 22 so a trip is much needed soon!

I live in Melbourne and yet, I’ve never travelled that far north i n Australia. The Sunshine Coast has soooo many beautiful places to visit. The beaches, the rainforests, the ginger factory (that I had not heard about before)! Thanks for sharing all these free things to do!

This is an awesome read! I often like to read up on free things to do in a place where I would be traveling. It is nice to go to nature trips and enjoy the scenery without paying for everything! I also wrote similar free things to do in my favorite cities in Europe and I think that will help my friends and future first-time travelers to the place.

I’d love to visit this paradise on earth one day. Very motivational post!

Oh my goodness I missed all of these when we visited the Sunshine coast! I’ll just have to go back now! 😉

Sounds like a good enough excuse! 😛

I do love the Sunshine Coast – but would you believe when we were there it rained for 5 days straight. lol

free places to visit sunshine coast

I’m Brianna and I’m possibly the funniest person I know. I’m a total goofball who loves to travel. I fell in love with the world in 2007, when my family and I moved to Sydney, Australia. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to see the world. I'm an ordinary adventurer here to show you how the average person can travel the world.

Posted March 27, 2024

Whether you’re travelling with the family, looking for an affordable friend getaway, or seeking solo adventures for the soul, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast offer a raft of free activities to add to your itinerary.

While Noosa offers a plethora of exciting activities, your stay doesn’t need to break the bank. The region’s idyllic temperatures make it an outdoor lovers’ paradise, with breathtaking beaches, refreshing swimming spots, and a range of hiking and biking trails offering no-cost ways to soak in the best of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast .

Here are some of the best free things to do around Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.

Free things to see and do around the Sunshine Coast and Noosa

Noosa national park coastal walk.

One of the best ways to experience why Noosa is such a popular Sunshine Coast destination is on the Noosa National Park Coastal Walk. Weaving your way along the coastal paths, secluded beaches, and native flora affords the perfect introduction to Noosa’s natural charm.

Watch for dolphins frolicking in the azure waves and - from July to October - migrating whales.

Allow around two hours for this 5km walk, more if you swim at the Fairy Pools (low tide only). It’s easy to catch a bus back to Noosa for a one-way trip or pack a lunch and make a day of it.

Caloundra Street Art Trail

For art lovers, one of the Sunshine Coast’s best free things to do is take the Caloundra Street Art Trail. This self-guided walk tours you through the town’s vibrant murals and thought-provoking street art, turning Caloundra into an open-air gallery.

With nine stops along the 1.7km trail, allow an hour to wander this creative urban adventure. Trail maps are available at the Caloundra Visitor Centre.

Eumundi Markets

For a charming mix of art, culture, culinary treats, and community vibes, head to the Eumundi Markets on a Wednesday or Saturday morning. Meandering the stalls, window shopping the local crafts, and enjoying the waft of the market’s tantalising treats prove an idyllic introduction to the Noosa Hinterland.

Make time to chat with the passionate stallholders; local pride is as infectious as the food truck treats are aromatic. Eumundi also has a free self-guided street art tour.

Noosa Regional Gallery

Only a 15 minute drive from Noosa’s popular Hastings Street, the Noosa Regional Gallery is a haven for art enthusiasts and culture-loving road trippers.

Free to enter, spend an hour or two at the gallery (Tuesday to Friday) to discover a diverse range of traditional and contemporary art exhibitions. Enjoy paintings, sculptures, and multimedia installations, alongside the regular visiting exhibits.

Caloundra Regional Art Gallery

The coastal charm of the Caloundra Regional Gallery holds a different appeal from Noosa’s more contemporary offering. With a commitment to the community and a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and visual arts displays, a visit to this free gallery proves enriching.

Open daily, allow 60 to 90 minutes here; more if there is a visit exhibition or cultural event running.

Kings Beach Park

Enjoy a carefree day at Kings Beach Park. This family-friendly and accessible spot overlooks pristine Kings Beach in Caloundra.

Choose a lush space in the shade, cook up a quintessential summer’s feast on the nearby barbeque facilities, and enjoy plenty of dips in the seawater swimming pool.

A post-picnic stroll along the coastal boardwalk rounds out a perfect day.

Noosa Botanic Gardens

Enjoy a tranquil picnic amid the lush greenery, exotic plants, and walking trails of the Noosa Botanic Gardens. Open daily, these free gardens are on the banks of Lake Macdonald.

Post-picnic, wander the themed gardens and look for the 94 species of birds that the native flora attracts.

The amphitheatre is an excellent spot for events and concerts.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, near Maleny, has one of the Sunshine Coast’s best picnic views. The breathtaking panoramic Glass House Mountains vistas are the perfect accompaniment to your picnic spread, and there are plenty of grassy areas to spread out.

If you’re visiting on a Sunday, stop by the Maleny Market for local artisanal treats. Walk off your picnic feast on the 1.7km Mary Cairncross Rainforest Walk.

Best free bike trails

Noosa river ride.

For cyclists of all abilities, the Noosa River Ride is a 13km (round trip) route from Tewantin Information Centre to Lion’s Park in Noosa Heads.

A mix of on and off-roading, enjoy peddling alongside the million-dollar homes that line Noosa River before reaching Hasting Street, where plenty of cafés, eateries, and gelato shops seek to entice you to take a break.

The  RACV Noosa Resort has bikes and e-scooters available to hire for guests.

Maroochy River Connection

For a pleasant day exploring the scenic Maroochy River, join the Maroochy River Connection trail, part of the Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway, a 73km route from Coolum to Bells Creek.

The Maroochy River Connection tours you from Mudjimba to Cotton Tree, a mostly flat part-coastal, part-river route that impresses with its water and nature views and local wildlife.

Mount Coolum Summit Track

If you love a moderate hiking challenge, Mount Coolum Summit is one of the Sunshine Coast’s best trails, thanks to its stunning panoramic views. The sweeping coastal and hinterland vistas make the track worthwhile, especially at sunrise and on clear days when you can see the iconic Glass House Mountains.

While the track is only 1.6km long, it’s a steep ascent to the summit, so allow 60 to 90 minutes depending on your fitness levels.

Buderim Forest Park and Falls

With a range of well-maintained walking tracks , the Buderim Forest Park is a peaceful place with towering trees, babbling brooks, and the famous Buderim (Serenity) Falls. For an easy circuit, take the Serenity Bridge trail; for a challenge, the 1.4km Buderim Tramway Walk has steeper sections to work up a sweat.

Martins Creek is significant for the Kabi Kabi people, who have used it as a freshwater source for thousands of years.

Plan the perfect picnic with stunning natural views. Image: Supplied

Mooloolaba Beach is fun for all. Image: Tourism and Events Queensland

Mooloolaba Beach, Mooloolaba

Recently voted one of the best beaches in the South Pacific, a day at Mooloolaba Beach offers a gorgeous white-sand beach for sunbaking, frisbee games, or sandcastle building, plus crystal-clear waters for snorkelling, swimming and body surfing.

The lively Mooloolaba Esplanade is ideal for strolls and people-watching around the Esplanade’s ample cafés, restaurants, and boutique shops.

Cotton Tree Park, Maroochydore

For a safe spot to swim on the Sunshine Coast , head to Cotton Tree Park in Maroochydore on the banks of the Maroochy River. Its grassy areas, shade, and shallow waters make it great for families.

There’s a fun playground for young children, a skatepark and basketball court for sporty tweens and teens, plus walking and biking paths.

9 fun things to do on the Sunshine Coast: Stay, play, explore

Looking for things to do on the Sunshine Coast in Australia ? You’ve come to the right place!

I’m so very lucky to live near the Sunshine Coast with its dramatic landscapes, epic golden surf beaches, family-friendly attractions and its laid-back lifestyle. Not to mention all of the yummy local produce, national parks and outdoor adventure opportunities. There are so many things to do on the Sunshine Coast for all ages and interests!

Living around an hour from the Sunshine Coast, Qld, it’s a regular haunt for us for short breaks, holidays and Sunshine Coast day trips to hang out at the beach. It has such a different vibe to the Gold Coast – it is low rise, leafy and generally life runs at a slower pace. There’s an abundance of family activities on the Sunshine Coast too and you’ll find plenty of free things to do on the Sunshine Coast so you don’t need to put your hand in your pocket all the time to enjoy a great Sunshine Coast holiday.

If you’re planning to visit the Sunshine Coast, read on to learn about the best Sunshine Coast tourist attractions and the best places to see on the Sunshine Coast!

Best beaches on the Sunshine Coast

Obviously, the big drawcard for fun things to do on the Sunshine Coast is a visit to the incredible beaches! If you love beaches as much as I do you won’t be disappointed as there are so many beaches on the Sunshine Coast. Your only difficult decision is choosing which beach!

The sand and water at Currimundi Lake Sunshine Coast

You’ll find plenty of surf clubs offering fantastic family-friendly meals for after your day on the sand too (check them out at Noosa, Mooloolaba, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Alexandra Heads, , Coolum, Marcoola and Sunshine Beach). Surf clubs always serve a hearty meal and many of the Sunshine Coast surf clubs have the most incredible views of the sand and ocean.

Maleny Dairy

Maleny Dairies is a fun attraction to add to your Sunshine Coast itinerary as it’s something the whole family will enjoy. The tour gives you a behind-the-scenes peek inside the family-owned working dairy farm, plus you get to taste lots of the produce too (and then buy it afterwards to take home!)

It’s fun to meet the Guernsey cows and see how the milk is processed and bottled or made into creamy yoghurts, deliciously thick custard and flavoured milks. All of the products are processed on-site and it’s fascinating to see this little dairy running as a self-sustaining operation where they make their own bottles and lids too. You even get to taste milk fresh from the udder with your cupped hands! (It’s a little warm and strange but definitely memorable!) Be prepared to spend a small fortune in the shop afterwards (and come armed with a cool bag filled with ice bricks to safely transport your goodies home).

Tours cost $14 per person and under twos are free. The tour lasts 1.5 hours.

Tours take place Monday to Saturday 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm (choose the 2.30pm to see the herd being milked in the dairy!)

Botanic Gardens and Birdworld

My kids love going along to any Botanic Gardens as they really enjoy checking out the plant life, the wildlife and the views. Maleny Botanic Gardens is a real treat and is one of their favourites! There is so much to see and do with pretty waterfalls, stone sculptures and fragrant, colourful plants. You can also become a perch for colourful birds which happily sit on your outstretched arms in the area outside the cafe!

Plus there is the addition of Birdworld there where you can go into the four large aviaries and learn all about the exotic birds that live there (don’t forget to remove all jewellery and earrings as macaws love sparkly things!). From tiny finches to cheeky parrots, it’s a colourful display. Keep an eye on your shoelaces too!

The attraction is open 9am – 4.30pm daily every day apart from Christmas Day.

SEALIFE Sunshine Coast

Discover an amazing underwater world at SEALIFE Sunshine Coast Mooloolaba. With touch pools where the kids can hold sea cucumbers, sea urchins and starfish; a fabulously funny seal show with a bit of panto humour thrown in for good measure; and plenty of jaw-dropping glowing jellyfish, it’s one of the best indoor activities on the Sunshine Coast for rainy days (although it’s equally fun on a hot day too!) Top tip: Make sure your kids put their hands up to volunteer during the seal show as they just might get picked to help like my son did!

It’s fun, educational and your kids will be amazed walking through the glass ocean tunnel – an 80-metre glass tunnel where sharks, rays and swordfish swim above your head.

Attraction is open 9am – 3pm (last entry at 2pm)

Book discounted entry tickets through Experience Oz here

Eumundi Markets

My kids have never been fond of markets that are all about shops, but Eumundi is a place they LOVE as there is so much food to enjoy! We get to bribe them with delicious doughnuts and sweet and salty satay chicken skewers while we get to enjoy browsing the lanes of artisan treasures. It’s a win, win (although it does usually cost us a small fortune to keep them fed for a few hours while we browse and enjoy the atmosphere!) It’s definitely worth it though!

Eumundi Markets are open Wednesdays 8am – 2pm and Saturdays 7am – 2pm.

Find out more about Eumundi Markets here

The Ginger Factory

My kids have loved every visit to The Ginger Factory and it makes me sad that we might only get one more out of them before the youngest is too grown up for it. It’s a really fun attraction best suited to little kids (I’d say it’s perfect for 0 – 8 and still fun for kids up to 10/12 depending on how cool they think they are!) The first time we took our three they were about 2 and 5 and they had the best time ever. We’ve been back a few times since and they’ve loved it every time although I think my now 12-yos will think they’re a bit too grown up for it all (although secretly they’ll still likely enjoy it).

You can go on site to the shop and cafe and playground for free, but to enjoy the various attractions within the attraction there are fees. There is the Ginger Train where you’re transported through 9 hectares of sub-tropical gardens in a historic train, a gentle little boat ride called Overboard that is all about following the gingerbread man around the world as he escapes the hungry chefs (here you can buy a photo which is a great memento and we bought the book with CD which got so much use when my kids were little!) plus there is a live bee show and factory tour and tasting which are well worth doing.

Go at lunchtime so you can enjoy eating in their cafe which showcases some divine Sunshine Coast produce, and make sure you stop off in the Ginger shop on your way out to pick up some local specials like honey and nuts.

Attraction is open 9am – 5pm daily.

The best value is to get the bundle of tickets that includes everything.

Australia Zoo, Sunshine Coast

Australia Zoo is a place we go back to again and again and again and again – it’s one of the best things to do on the Sunshine Coast for families. We’ve had annual Australia Zoo passes pretty much every year since we arrived and the kids never get bored of it. It’s such a huge, sprawling attraction that it’s really impossible to see it all in one day.

There is a little train you can hop on to save your legs (it’s handy to get the train to Africa and then walk back so you get to see as much as possible) but if you’re just visiting the area for a short holiday it’s best to either go along for two days on a multi-day pass or be ruthless in choosing how to spend your time. The highlight of the day is the Wildlife Warrior show in the Crocoseum. This takes place daily at 1.15pm and is a lot of fun (make sure you choose a seat in the shade as it’s way too hot to sit in the full sun for the whole show). If you want to eat in the cafe, try to eat before the show as once it finishes the cafe really fills up.

There are a range of animal talks through the day for you to check out, as well as keepers roaming around with different animals for you to get your photo take with (in addition to the main photo area in the undercover area where you can line up to meet different animals for a professional photo). Don’t forget to check the photo area at the end of the day to buy any prints. There are also a range of animal encounters you can do, and Zoo Keeper for the Day events during the school holidays. We’ve done the echidna experience and it was awesome and well worth the money.

In addition to the animals, you’ll also find a jumping pillow and a waterpark so if you’re coming with kids, bring their swimmers and towels (there are lockers so you can leave your things if you don’t want to cart them around with you all day). During the school holidays, there is usually a special treasure hunt of some kind to follow too with a little prize at the end.

If you’re moving to the area, an annual pass is the best way to save as you can go back time and time again and get a discount on all purchases in the shops and cafe. Believe the hype – Australia Zoo is an amazing attraction and one that we never get bored of.

Australia Zoo is open daily 9am – 5pm.

Buy Australia Zoo tickets through Experience Oz here

Sunshine Castle

The Sunshine Coast Castle is a fun, slightly quirky attraction. Australia isn’t known for its ancient heritage buildings, so it feels odd having a Norman castle plonked on the Sunshine Coast like this but I promise you it’s a fun thing to do with kids on the Sunshine Coast. It was actually only built in 1972 by a Scottish couple (even though it looks much older!) and it has turned from a place to display a doll collection into a medieval museum. There is a self-guided treasure hunt which takes you through the atmospheric castle and the great hall. Unfortunately parts of the castle are now closed for safety reasons but it’s still a fun way to spend an hr or two.

Castle is open 9.30am – 4.30pm Monday – Saturday and 10am – 3pm Sundays. General admission is $8 per person.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a fabulous free thing to do on the Sunshine Coast. Here you’ll find a Discovery Centre filled with interactive, multi-sensory displays to learn all about the rainforest, its wildlife and its history. It’s a great indoor activity for rainy days, although if you come on a dry day there is also a large playground outside and 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest to explore with tranquil walking trails. It’s an awe-inspiring place to explore, with so much wildlife to see and rainforest sounds to enjoy.

The Discovery Centre is open 10am – 2pm faily. The rainforest walks are open 7am – 6pm daily. It is closed during various public holidays. There is a cafe and toilets on site along with BBQs and picnic tables so you can make a day of it.

Best places to stay on Sunshine Coast

There’s lots of accommodation on the Sunshine Coast, so you won’t be stuck for places to stay.

Search for accommodation on the Sunshine Coast

Some of my personal favourites are:

Ivory Palms, Noosa

Ivory Palms Noosa has great pools and a jumping pillow. It’s leafy and relaxed and a fun place to unwind after a day exploring. It’s also great for families as you get large self-catering villas rather than small hotel rooms or pokey apartments. Noosa is a great base for your Sunshine Coast holiday.  Check prices at Ivory Palms Noosa here

Breakfree Alexandra Beach Resort

Breakfree Alexandra Beach at Alexandra Headlands has the best sprawling pools (my kids can happily spend all day in them!) and it’s a walking distance from the incredible beach and across the road from the local surf club. I originally stayed here on a hosted travel writing trip but now we pay to go back as we love it.

Things to do on the Sunshine Coast: Sunshine Coast information to plan your stay

The Sunshine Coast is located in southeast Queensland, just over an hour north of Brisbane. If you’re flying in internationally for a trip to the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane Airport is the place to land. From there, you can hire a car or take a transfer. If you live elsewhere in Australia, the Sunshine Coast Airport connects the region with the rest of the country.

If you’re looking to head to the Sunshine Coast from the Gold Coast (as I know lots of people are who are in search of Australia’s best beaches!), again hiring a car or hiring a motorhome is the best option although there are transfers and shuttles available if you prefer not to drive. Lots of the attractions on the Sunshine Coast are far apart and public transport can be limited so if you don’t have your own transport you’re going to be relying on tours that collect you from your accommodation on the Sunshine Coast.

Shop for hire cars on the Sunshine Coast with DriveAway

Shop for motorhomes on Motorhome Republic

You’ll find public transport on the Sunshine Coast provided mainly by Sunbus, with some services by Glasshouse Country Coaches and Hinterland Connect.

Temperatures on the Sunshine Coast are comfortable year-round, although it does get much cooler in the hinterland (definitely pack some warm things if you’re heading inland during late autumn, winter and early spring). Average beach temperatures range from 20 degrees in July to 28 degrees in summer. Being a lush, green location, expect downpours throughout the year so be sure to pack a rain mac and umbrella. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

While you’ll need a gold coin donation to enter the Discovery Centre at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve , it’s well worth the investment. Set amongst majestic Hinterland forest surrounds, the Discovery Centre is a treasure trove of interactive learning. Here, you’ll find plenty to love in this spacious, modern facility – whether it’s taking in the breathtaking views of the Glass House Mountains from the viewing deck, enjoying the thematic displays, or chatting with a local volunteer.

Best of all, you’re close to the stunning walking trails which weave through the tranquil grounds of the Reserve. As you amble along, be sure to keep an eye out for the diverse range of native flora and fauna which populate this gorgeous part of the Sunshine Coast (such as grey goshawks, red-legged pademelons, and more.

Take a photo at the Big Pineapple

The Big Pineapple is the site of royal visits (Diana, Princess of Wales, enjoyed a trip here), epic music festivals (watch this space for the return of the Big Pineapple Music Festival in 2024), agricultural legends and iconic social media snapshots. Don’t miss your chance to grab a photo of your own when you pass through the Nambour region.

Kings Beach Ocean Pool

Sydney might have its Bondi Icebergs pool, but we’ve got our Kings Beach Ocean Pool in Caloundra . This haven of cooling sea water is a great option to explore – particularly if you’ve got kids who might be a bit daunted by the majestic beach beyond. Conveniently located on the northern tip of Kings Beach, the ocean pool is usually open for public use year-round (but be sure to check out our local council page for any updates on operating hours). This is a great one to enjoy during the warm summer months and includes plenty of poolside umbrellas and chairs.

Eumundi Markets

Couple at Eumundi Markets, Eumundi

Even if you’re on a limited budget, a stroll through the Eumundi Markets is a colourful feast for the senses... that doesn’t cost a cent (unless you see something that takes your fancy!) Inhale the mouthwatering aromas of okonomiyaki sizzling on barbecue grills, browse through artworks, and get the good vibes rolling with the vibrant tunes of local musicians. You'll also be in the prime spot to enjoy free samples of flavoursome local products, such as honey, fudge, black garlic, and more.

After all, when you’re visiting one of the largest artisan markets in the Southern Hemisphere, you’re never going to come away bored!

Sunrise at Mt Coolum

Sunrise from Mt Coolum

Sunrise from Mt Coolum

There’s no need to pay for this epic lightshow! Set your alarm early to embark on the ascent up Mt Coolum . Set aside approximately 1.5 hours for the return journey, which features designated trails and stunning views along the way. Once at the top of Mt Coolum, you’ll get to enjoy the cotton-candy sunrise over the Pacific Ocean and witness the sunlight spilling out across the landscape from Double Island Point to Caloundra . It doesn’t get more photo-friendly than this.

Float down Seary’s Creek

With its crisp, golden water and winding streams, Seary’s Creek is almost like our very own natural waterpark. Located in the Cooloola Recreation Area , Seary’s Creek is fast making a name for itself on the Sunshine Coast as a family-friendly hotspot for summertime fun. Make sure to bring some inflatables along to float down the stream, or dive beneath the surface where rainbow fish flit by.

How cloudy will your area be for the solar eclipse? See the forecast.

There may be no sky forecast more consequential for Americans this spring than the one for April 8, when a solar eclipse will sweep across the country .

Predictions are especially meaningful for those in the path of totality — the roughly 115-mile-wide swath from Texas to Maine where the moon will completely block the sun, revealing the solar corona , the outermost part of the sun’s atmosphere. Millions of people are traveling into this path, but a cloudy forecast could spoil what many say is an incomparable experience . The United States won’t have another total solar eclipse until 2044.

Podcast episode

Cloud forecasts may not be reliable until a day or two before the eclipse, but computer simulations are beginning to show details that give forecasters an idea as to where either clear skies or clouds are most probable.

Here’s the latest forecast as of Friday morning Eastern time. The forecast will be regularly updated as the eclipse approaches, with the next update on Saturday morning.

Note that, based on past years’ weather in areas that will be in the path of totality — where 100 percent of the sun will be obscured — Texas has been most likely to be cloud-free on April 8, while the zone from Ohio to Maine has more often had thick cloud cover.

2024 total solar eclipse

free places to visit sunshine coast

  • Confidence in sunny skies is highest in northern New England because of high pressure; a weak cold front will probably remain to its north.
  • Another front will be stalling out and weakening over the central states while approaching the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, increasing clouds along portions of the path of totality from the Great Lakes to Texas. The location of clouds from the front is becoming clearer but could still shift.
  • Totality locations where skies are most likely to be clear include: The area from northern Arkansas through southern Indiana, northern New York state and New England. The area around Caribou, Maine, presently has the lowest cloud percentage outlook among totality locations. Other locations where cloud cover is forecast to be less than 25 percent include Montpelier and Burlington in Vermont; Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in New York; Poplar Bluff in Missouri; and Effingham in Illinois.
  • Totality locations where risk of clouds is highest include south and central Texas, southwestern Arkansas and parts of the eastern Great Lakes from Ohio to New York. Texas is home to the cloudiest forecasts, which is the opposite of historical norms. All of the locations where cloud cover is expected to exceed 75 percent are in the Lone Star State, with Eagle Pass, San Antonio and Hondo among the cloudier locations. The murkiest locations in the Northeast are mainly near Lake Erie, including Niagara Falls.
  • We want to stress that cloud predictions are uncertain and may not become more reliable until the weekend; even then, cloud cover often depends on processes happening at very small scales in the atmosphere — small enough that models don’t have enough detailed data to accurately simulate them. This outlook is intended to offer only a general guide.

How the forecast has changed over the past day

  • The main challenge remains predicting the location of a front and associated clouds that could affect areas along portions of the path of totality in the United States. The location has been shifting around from day-to-day, but the shifts since Wednesday and Thursday have been small.
  • An area centered on southern Illinois has generally trended sunnier in recent forecasts.
  • Odds of sunshine have become even better across much of northern New England.

Forecasts for several large cities in the path of totality

  • Dallas (67 percent cloud cover — 11 percentage point increase from previous forecast made Thursday): Cloud cover forecasts continue to vacillate. Variable cloud cover is possible in the morning and afternoon before the risk of strong to severe storms toward evening. Occasional breaks in the clouds are a good bet before any storms start to bubble up, although a jet of moisture off the Pacific Ocean will also send a stream of higher and thinner clouds passing overhead. The chance of thicker cloud cover increases south and east of Dallas while decreasing to the west and north. Temperatures are forecast in the mid-70s to around 80 at eclipse time, with increasing humidity.
  • Little Rock (53 percent cloud cover — three percentage point decrease from previous forecast): Little Rock also finds itself near the stalling front and the battle zone between cloudier and sunnier conditions. Trends the last couple days suggest at least partial sunshine near the city. The Weather Service in Little Rock writes that “eclipse viewing should be favorable across northern Arkansas and favorable to questionable across central Arkansas.” Scattered thunderstorms are possible into the night. Temperatures are forecast to reach the mid- and upper 70s with modest humidity.
  • Indianapolis (34 percent cloud cover — no change from previous forecast): It’s possible Indianapolis ends up on the west side of the front where sinking air would promote sunshine, which is what the latest model simulations suggest. “Confidence has increased that clouds should be dissipating by mid-morning and allowing for optimal viewing conditions across Central Indiana,” writes the Weather Service office serving the area. However, if the front slows down, it could still end up cloudier. Temperatures are forecast to be near 70 degrees with minimal humidity.
  • Cleveland (53 percent cloud cover — eight percentage point increase from previous forecast): Some clouds could stream into the area ahead of the front, but it’s a coin toss as to whether skies end up more cloudy or sunny during the eclipse. The Weather Service office serving the area writes that there’s a chance morning clouds could give way to a bit more sunshine in the afternoon. Temperatures should be in the upper 50s to mid-60s, which is warmer than normal.
  • Buffalo (70 percent cloud cover — 26 percentage point increase from previous forecast): Clouds squeezed between a front to the west and high pressure to the east seem to have eyes on Buffalo. They don’t seem like the kind of clouds that will totally block the sun, and clearer skies are still possible. “Guidance continues to show uncertainty with cloud cover for the afternoon on Monday with partly to mostly cloudy sky conditions expected, mainly mid-level clouds at this time expected,” the Weather Service office serving the area writes, while noting a few sprinkles can’t be ruled out in the area. Temperatures are probably around 50 to 55, which is milder than average for the date.
  • Burlington, Vt. (12 percent cloud cover — two percentage point increase from previous forecast): Five to 10 inches of snow just fell in the area, but — by Monday — high pressure parked nearby boosts the chance of sunshine. This continues among the most stable forecast since late last week, but clouds increasing in areas to the west still are worth watching. The Weather Service office there says that “the front appears to move in later Monday in the evening or overnight hours, so there is not too much concern at this time.” Near average temperatures are expected, with eclipse temperatures around 50 to 55.

Note that the cloud cover percentage forecasts provided by models do tend to err on the pessimistic side and don’t distinguish between high, thin clouds — through which the eclipse could be seen — and low, thick clouds that would obstruct it.

If you don’t see your city on the list above, you can look up the cloud forecast for any location in the table below:

The above forecast map, discussion and table will be regularly updated through the day of the eclipse, when predictions will be most confident. Bookmark this page and check back occasionally.

Forecast data is from the Weather Service’s National Blend of Models . Type of eclipse data is from the U.S. Navy .
