Best Private Jet Companies for Your Personal Charter

How to make the skies a whole lot friendlier.

private jet travel companies

For those toying with the idea of private jet travel, and attempting to sort through the myriad options, we called in an expert to narrow down the best private jet companies for your personal charter. Private aviation expert Doug Gollan, who runs the website Private Jet Card Comparisons , says choosing a private jet charter is, predictably, contingent on the needs of the traveler.

"A company that's good for flying you up to the house in Maine is maybe not the best for flying you up to the ski place or the West Coast," Gollan said.

When determining the best jet company for your needs, Gollan told Travel + Leisure key factors should include "lead time for booking, peak days where surcharges range up to 100 percent, daily minimums, which vary significantly, and where you can fly without having to pay repositioning fees."

The biggest mistake you can make as a first-time private jet flier is to commit without doing your research, Gollan said. He recommends potential jet card holders "map out the flights you expect to make in the next 12 to 18 months, how many people will be traveling, what type of amenities you want, from Wi-Fi to the ability to bring pets, and how flexible you are on dates, so you can compare program rules before buying."

Like any major investment, the PJ (private jet) lifestyle is all about doing your homework. To that end, we've outlined eight top private jet companies and what kind of travel each charter is suited for.

For those looking to fly cross-country, rather than booking short-haul jaunts from Teterboro Airport to Martha's Vineyard, XO gives fliers access to its fleet at a competitive price with three distinct membership options: XO Shared Membership, XO Membership, and XO Reserve. XO Membership and XO Reserve cost $995 annually, while XO Shared Membership costs $595 and still gives you limited access to more than 360 aircraft without having to pay a minimum deposit.

However, you don't get member benefits like 24/7 support with Shared Membership. The XO Membership comes with these benefits and more, and you can upgrade to XO Reserve for priority access and guaranteed recovery, so you won't have to pay anything if the airline needs to bring in another plane because of mechanical issues.

Sentient Jet

Sentient Jet , known as the first company to offer private jet cards, is one of the best charter options if you plan on regularly taking short-haul flights. The PJ life lends itself to quick jumps — Los Angeles to Las Vegas; New York City to the Hamptons; Denver to Telluride, Colorado — and Sentient Jet has a 72-minute daily minimum for a number of jets in its fleet. "Many programs these days bill at least two hours, even if you fly less," Gollan pointed out, which means paying for only the amount of time you're in the air on these short flights is a financial victory.

Known for an impressive array of partnerships — perhaps the most notable being that American Express Platinum cardholders benefit from discounted Wheels Up membership rates — Wheels Up aligns with brands that further elevate the luxury travel experience. Like its partnership with Porsche, which offers exclusive access to sought-after rentals when your flight touches down. The jet company, which became a publicly traded company in 2021, has coveted, in-the-know perks, too. "Members can snag empty leg repositioning flights" — one-way flights to reposition the plane, that is — "for just $350," Gollan said.

PJ flights across the Atlantic, or from New York City all the way to a far-flung island, are less prevalent in private aviation — with most charterers opting to fly commercial between continents. However, VistaJet has become a top choice for long-haul journeys with its fleet of Global 7500 jets, which can fly 7,700 nautical miles (and 16 hours nonstop), making this the "largest, fastest, and longest-range aircraft in business aviation," according to a statement released by the company to Travel + Leisure . VistaJet also offers its Private World series, partnering with elite tour companies and yacht charters, to take faithful fliers to destinations as far-flung as Maldives, Mozambique, and China.

Known for smaller jets that can land in more than 5,000 airports in the U.S., cutting-edge technology, and a lower carbon footprint than most jet companies, Verijet offers competitive pricing, with its Cirrus SF50 jets starting at $3,000 per hour. There are, however, downsides to flying such a small jet. "There's no toilet, so make sure you stop before you go," Gollan said. Nonetheless, he concluded that "for flights under 90 minutes, it's a great option" — especially considering you can book on a per-flight basis without a jet card membership.

Instead of chartering someone else's jet, you can go in on a jet yourself with fractional (aka "shared") ownership, which usually means members pay for guaranteed access to a jet they co-own for a predetermined number of hours per year. Flexjet offers fractional ownership but does so a little differently than other companies. "While most fractional share providers sell by the hour, Flexjet offers its ultra-long-range Gulfstream G650ER on a by-the-day basis," Gollan said. "If you are going to Europe or Asia and making multiple stops, it means you can leave luggage on the jet during stopovers, [and] keep the same aircraft and crew for your entire trip."

Flexjet also offers a jet card program, and the company recently added Gulfstream G700s to its fleet for longer-haul travel.

Tradewind is another smart choice for short private flights. As Gollan explained, "Tradewind's fleet of Pilatus PC-12 turboprops are a cost-effective way to access small airports larger jets can't fly into." Operating only in North America and the Caribbean, Tradewind does not require fliers to have a jet card or any type of membership in order to charter. You can also book just one seat on a Tradewind jet directly through the company's website or app. If you are frequently flying the same route to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, you can purchase your flights in advance at a discounted rate by buying a ticket book.

NetJets seemingly has a solution for every type of private jet traveler, including a shared ownership program, a leasing option (which has a slightly different payment structure than the shared ownership route), and a private jet card. Gollan is a proponent of NetJets' fractional ownership plans, because they get you access to a jet "on as little as four to six hours' notice." He said NetJets is ideal for those looking to fly private for years to come, because committing to a longer duration of fractional ownership gives you access to its 800-jet fleet.

The Best Private Jet Companies To Globe-Trot Like The 1%

Privacy, punctuality, and personalization.

by Molly Wolfe Updated on March 11, 2024

At Luxe Digital, we independently research, review, and recommend products we love and that we think you will love, too. Learn more about how we curate the best products for you .

The long drive to the airport. Endless hours of waiting. Security. Queues. Customs. It’s no wonder high net-worth travelers opt for a fast-track approach: the private jet.

Indeed, gliding onto the runway in your own private jet is the ultimate symbol of wealth. You’ll emerge well-rested, greeting the new land with a presidential wave a la Obama (no? Just us?). Far beyond the luxuries of business and first-class, private jets offer that 1%-er feel typically reserved for—well, the 1%.

Personalized service, lavish interiors, and crowd-free aisles aside, private jet companies’ principal appeal is simple: convenience. Depart when it suits you, from an airport of your choosing, and skip the tedium of check-in queues that, let’s face it, err on the side of dehumanizing.

Indeed, private jet airlines often operate from non-commercial airports, giving you a huge choice of take-off and touch-down locations. Streamlining the journey, your Colorado ski chalet starts to feel less of a world away.

Whether you’re a frequent long-haul flyer or your typical day involves brunch in Paris and dinner in Milan, we’ve handpicked the best private jet companies to take the faff out of flying.

Psssst: looking for something luxurious but more affordable? Check our round-up of the best business-class airlines in the world .

Sentient Jet’s fleet interiors are designed with no expense spared: comfort is king, and in one of their deep-sinking armchairs, you’ll feel like royalty, too.

The 10 largest private jet companies increased their share of Part 135/91k flight hours to 45.1% from 44.3% in 2020

Solairus (89.3%), airshare (77.1%), flyexclusive (76.3%), netjets (61.4%), jet edge (59.9%), and wheels up (55.0%) record biggest percentage growth, read our detailed 2021 year-in-review for each of the 10 largest private aviation providers, including flight hour activity since 2019.

There was no change among the top four North American private jet holding companies, based on combined Part 135 and Part 91k flight hours. However, Argus TraqPak data shows a new player in the 5th spot. FlyExclusive moved from 10th in 2019 to 8th in 2020. The table below provides a company-by-company ranking for the 30 largest private jet companies in 2021, including flight hours and market share.

About our analysis

But first, let’s discuss our analysis. Why do we combine the Argus TraqPak’s data of Part 91k and Part 135 operators?

Argus designates operators under Part 91k – fractional ownership – if more than 50% of their aircraft have shares available.

Yet, NetJets, which clocked 478,444 hours in 2021 to lead the fractional list , has historically said about 20% of those hours are flown under Part 135 for jet card customers.

That equates to 95,000 hours of charter flights, which would have ranked it second on the 2021 Argus Part 135 operators list.

Other operators on the Argus fractional operators list also make their aircraft available to third-party brokers for the Part 135 charter.

Combining Part 91k and 135 flight hours

By combining Part 91k and 135, we give a broader look at shared aircraft – fractional and charter fleets.

It also gives you the opportunity to view the “for-hire” market, Part 135 and 91k operators, against the total market, which includes non-commercial Part 91 business aircraft flight hours.

Who’s who in private jets

We also use this analysis to combine operators under their corporate parents.

As an example, that means adding Part 135 operator Executive Jet Management, a NetJets Inc. company, together with NetJets’ flights. It also means summing VistaJet, Red Wing Aviation, Talon Air, and XOJet flying under Vista Global Holding.

Finally, aircraft arrival and departure information is included on all IFR flights in the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, and the Caribbean. That means flights from NetJets Europe in the North America region are added into the total and the same for other operators. They are noted at the bottom of the chart below.

Private Jet Charter Brokers vs. Operators

What do we miss? This data is for operators and doesn’t count off-fleet brokerage flight activity.

As an example, in addition to its operator Flexjet, in the U.S., Directional Aviation owns jet card broker Sentient Jet and on-demand broker FXAir. In 2020, we estimate they combined for around $500 million in sales. Some of that was onto the Flexjet fleet, but the vast majority of it was on third-party operators.

Likewise, a considerable amount of sales for both Wheels Up and Vista’s brokers XO and Apollo Jets are onto third-party operators.

In its 2021 pre-IPO investor presentation , Wheels Up said its growth plan was based mainly on an asset-light strategy of using third-party operators.

More jet cards?

So, this list tracks flight volume by the operator. Yet 13 of the 30 largest operators don’t have their own jet card or membership programs, and they instead focus on the wholesale market, although, as you will see, that it may change.

Largest Private Aircraft Operators for 2021

In a detailed analysis of data provided by Argus TraqPak, it was no surprise that NetJets held serve in the top spot .

It may raise eyebrows; however, it increased its market share.

NetJets share of Part 135/91k flight hours increased from 18.3% to 20.1%. However, most of those gains were in the first half of 2021, and its share was 19.8% as of June when we provided a midyear look.

It is also the only operator with a double-digit share of the total market, including Part 91 operations.

NetJets, Inc. flight hours increased from 336,252 in 2020 to 542,831, a 61% jump. From a historical perspective, the Berkshire Hathaway unit flew 462,574 hours in 2019. ( Read our 2021 Year in Review for the 10 Largest Private Jet Companies below. )

Flexjet vs. Wheels Up battle for 2nd place

Directional Aviation’s Flexjet held its second spot as flight hours increased from 134,481 in 2020 to 178,327, although its share of the for-hire market fell to 6.6% from 7.3%. Flexjet flew 130,379 hours in 2019.

Wheels Up Experience in the third spot boosted its share to 6.2% from 5.9%, not counting the 8,377 hours from its February 2022 acquisition of Alante. However, even adding those totals, it would have remained behind Flexjet.

Top Private Jet Operators (Full Year 2021)

With its acquisition spree, Wheels Up flights hours have jumped from 18,618 in 2019 to 107,592 last year and 166,805 in 2021. This year for the first time, included the January 2021 acquisition of Mountain Aviation, which in 2020 clocked 27,661 hours, ranking 7th that year.

Vista Global gains

Vista Global, which increased hours to 96,200 from 71,343 across its portfolio of operators, still lost 3/10ths of a share point. Last year, it added Talon Air to its totals, and it’s 50% bigger than 2019, when it had 65,344 hours in North American departures. That, of course, was before its Red Wing acquisition. It also didn’t account for VistaJet N-tail aircraft operated by Jet Aviation prior to Vista’s acquisition of XOJet in 2018.

If its acquisition of Air Hamburg goes through, that will have a negligible impact on our list, which is based on North American departures. The German operator only clocked 575 hours in North America in 2021, according to Argus.

FlyExclusive moves from 10th to 5th

New in the Top 5 is FlyExclusive. After jumping from 10th in 2019 to 8th in 2020, it displaced Jet Linx Aviation in the 5th spot as flight hours grew from 25,872 to 45,617. It also increased market share by over 20%, although in the fragmented fractional and charter market, that still just represents 1.7% share.

While Pilatus PC-12 and PC-24 fractional operator PlaneSense held the 6th spot, Jet Linx Aviation placed 7th despite a 33% increase in flight hours, compared to both 2020 and 2019.

Below are 2021 highlights for the 10 largest fractional and charter operators.

Biggest Private Jet Operators – 2021 Year in Review

Mergers, acquisitions, fleet orders, and IPOs highlighted key stories among the biggest charter and fractional operators.

1. NetJets, Inc. (Berkshire Hathaway)

Operators: executive jet management, netjets, netjets europe.

  • Part 135/91k share: 20.1%
  • Total North American industry share: 10.9%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 542,831
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 336,252
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 462,574
  • Change 2021/2020: + 61.4%

Related: Amber Aviation, QS Partners, QS Security, WasteFuel

The big news from NetJets, Inc . was both its NetJets and Executive Jet Management shut down sales of their jet card programs in August as demand spiked to record levels.

That came after NetJets in June put on hiatus its Classic jet card, which featured a 10-hour call-out. It also halted immediate access for new fractional share buyers in October.

Prior to stopping jet card sales, it had implemented two rate hikes and changed peak days to blackouts.

New private jets

In terms of growth, NetJets added over 80 new private jets last year, hiring hundreds of pilots and other staff. Over 100 more new jets will come this year. There was also an order for 100 additional Embraer Phenom 300E light jets. Of note was a return to China, with an investment in Shenzhen-based Amber Aviation.

The world’s biggest private aviation provider also upped its sustainability push by investing in WasteFuel, which recycles garbage into Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Lastly, it retired the Marquis Jet name that it had used to brand its jet cards.

There are no publicly available revenue estimates for the unit of Berkshire Hathaway.

2. Directional Aviation (Flexjet)

Operators: flexjet, flairjet, sirio, halo, associated aircraft group.

  • Part 135/91k share: 6.6%
  • Total North American industry share: 3.6%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 178,327
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 134,481
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 130,379
  • Change 2021/2020: + 32.6%

Related Companies: OneSky Flight – Associated Aircraft Group, Flairjet, Flexjet Europe, FXAir, Halo, Halo Aviation, PrivateFly, Sentient Jet, and Sirio. Additionally, 4Air, Constant Aviation, FlyEasy, Nextant Aerospace, Tuvoli, Zanite Corp.

Flexjet, like Sentient Jet, halted new jet card sales, although both allowed current customers to renew.

Flexjet ramped up delivery of new jets and will take an average of four new private jets monthly through the end of 2022. It also expanded the footprint of its Gulfstream G650 fractional program.

Its OneSky Flight unit bought two helicopter operators – based in the Northeast U.S. and outside London. Directional then unveiled a door-to-door strategy with an order for 200 eVTOLs from Eve.

No Jets For Sales

Flexjet continued its strategy of not selling jets after exiting its fractional fleet. Instead, it uses them as a charter fleet for customers of Sentient and FXAir.

Via 4Air, Directional companies have taken a leadership position in going beyond just offsetting carbon neutrality, offsetting all harmful emissions.

Directional Principal Kenn Ricci’s SPAC Zanite went public and merged with Embraer’s Eve.

A Moody’s report from August 2020 pegged OneFlight annual gross revenues at $1.6 billion for the year ending June 30, 2020.

3. Wheels Up Experience

Operators: alante air charter, gama aviation signature, mountain aviation, tmc jets, wheels up private jets (formerly delta private jets).

  • Part 135/91k share: 6.2%
  • Total North American industry share: 3.4%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 166,805
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 107,592
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 18,169
  • Change 2021/2020: + 55.0%

Related Companies: Avianis, Air Partner

Wheels Up started 2021 with a January acquisition of Mountain Air, which in 2020 ranked 7th on our list. The big news, of course, was its landmark IPO in July.

But there was also a constant stream of executive announcements as the company bolstered its credentials with leaders who brought experience from publicly traded companies. Vinayak Hegde was quickly promoted to President.

Wheels Up never stopped selling memberships . However, in November, it did block joiners at lower levels from flying immediately. That was rescinded earlier this month.

Going Public

In going public, the company changed its official name from Wheels Up Partners to Wheels Up Experience. As part of its stated efforts to go beyond flying, it signed a slew of lifestyle partnerships, including a signature deal with American Express.

It started 2022 with an agreement to buy a U.K.-based jet card and charter broker Air Partner to lead its promised international expansion. That deal is expected to close in Q1.

It also acquired light jet operator Alante Air Charter, which ranked 29th on our 2021 list. Alante’s numbers are not included in the Wheels Up totals.

Refinitiv pegged analysts’ consensus of $1.192 billion in 2021 revenues for Wheels Up Experience.

4. Vista Global Holding

Operators: air hamburg (pending), talon air, red wing aviation, vistajet, xojet aviation.

  • Part 135/91k share: 3.6%
  • Total U.S. North American industry share: 1.9%

  • 2019 Flight Hours: 65,344
  • Change 2021/20: + 34.8%

Related Companies: Apollo Jets, XO Global, XO Aircraft Management, GMJ Air Shuttle

Vista Global’s buys 2021 included adding mega-broker Apollo Jets and charter operator Talon Air, 17th on the 2021 list of Top Charter Operators.

It also announced an order for 23 Global 7500s and Challenger 350s to be delivered for its VistaJet unit by year’s end.

Bolstering its green credentials, VistaJet said it would be carbon neutral by 20025.

Vista has started 2022 with an agreement to buy Air Hamburg, a move that will add 44 private jets to its fleet.

According to Fitch Ratings, Vista Global sales soared from $900 million in 2020 to $1.6 billion last year.

5. FlyExclusive

Operators: exclusive jets, sky night aviation.

  • Part 135/91k share: 1.7%
  • Total North American industry share: 0.9%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 45,617
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 25,872
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 20,764
  • Change 2021/2020: + 76.3%

Related Companies: FlyExclusive Aviation Services (MRO), FlyExclusive Jetstream (paint), FlyExclusive Interiors, Kinston Jet Center, Crystal Coast Aviation, Carolina Air Center

2021 was a watershed year. After launching its first consumer membership program at the end of 2020, it continued to build its fleet via used jets.

It also opened its maintenance hangar, paint shop, and interior studio at Kinston, North Carolina headquarters.

From 2019, when it broke into the Top 10, it improved from 8th in 2020 to the 5th spot in 2021. However, it would have to double in size to catch 4th place Vista Global.

Still, its 76.3% increase in flight hours last year was the highest growth rate of the eight largest companies on our list.

For its jet card – it never stopped selling – it bolstered Jet Club by adding fixed-hourly pricing to the deep Caribbean, Central America, and Northern South America. It also launched a new pricing structure, making it a competitive option from the East Coast to popular mountain ski destinations.

Last September, Chairman and Owner Jim Segrave said he expected 2021 revenues to clock in at around $230 million.

6. PlaneSense

  • Part 135/91k share: 1.6%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 42,907
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 31,150
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 35,648
  • Change 2021/2020: + 37.7%

PlaneSense expanded the ferry-fee free service areas for its Pilatus PC-12 program to the West Coast. It also opened a Western U.S. base outside of Las Vegas.

On the charter side, it halted charter sales via its Cobalt subsidiary as demand soared.

7. Jet Linx Aviation

  • 2021 Flight Hours: 42,284
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 31,175
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 31,354
  • Change 2021/20: +35.6%

Jet Linx Aviation opened its first Florida base in Miami at Opa Locka Executive Airport. It also rolled out alternative ownership programs as it seeks to build its fleet with both owned and managed aircraft.

8. Jet Edge

  • Part 135/91k share: 1.5%
  • Total North American industry share: 0.8%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 40,704
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 25,461
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 22,549
  • Change 2021/2020: + 59.9%

With KKR’s backing, Jet Edge added 27 super-midsize and large cabin private jets in 2021.

It also put NetJets and Flexjet squarely in its sights, with its AdvantagEdge program for charter-focused jet owners, positioning it as a fractional alternative.

It also launched its first jet card offer and quickly reached the $100 million sales mark.

What’s next? Jet Edge was recently in discussions with Vista Global and Directional in the frenzied M&A market, although a transaction is not necessarily imminent.

9. Solairus Aviation

  • 2021 Flight Hours: 39,687
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 20,968
  • 2019 Flight Hours: 28,352
  • Change 2021/20: + 89.3%

Despite its focus on Part 91 – only about a third of the 275 private jets it has under management are Part 135 – Solairus had the highest growth rate of the 10 largest private jet companies in 2021. Its flight hours jumped 89.3%.

While halting sales of its fixed-rate jet card, it launched an app providing hard quotes you can book instantly. It also remained largely focused on the wholesale market.

10. Airshare

  • Part 135/91k share: 0.8%
  • Total North American industry share: 0.4%
  • 2021 Flight Hours: 20,955
  • 2020 Flight Hours: 11,835
  • Change 2021/2020 + 77.1%

Airsahre halted new jet card sales. It also took delivery of its first two of up to 20 Bombardier Challenger 350s, expanding beyond its fleet of Embraer Phenom 300s and Phenom 100s .

Final thoughts

Solairus (89.3%), Airshare (77.1%), FlyExclusive (76.3%), NetJets (61.4%), Jet Edge (59.9%), and Wheels Up (55.0%) recorded the biggest percentage growth among the 10 biggest private jet providers.

These 10 largest private jet companies increased their share of Part 135/91k flight hours to 45.1% from 44.3% in 2020.

In other words, business aviation in the U.S. is still a fragmented market. That means if there is a break in the demand curve, there will be downward pricing pressure. Of course, Argus forecasts another record year in 2022 .

It’s worth noting 13 of the 30 largest operators don’t have a formal jet card or membership program. But that’s changing.

FlyExclusive launched its program in late 2019. Jet Edge and Thrive started their first consumer programs last year.

Jet Access has said it will launch a jet card program this year.

So, if you are looking at this list from a consumer’s perspective, there’s good news. Despite current supply issues, more operators seem set on developing direct-to-consumer membership programs.

Still, the top 30 companies control just 53.9% of the market, with 45.1% held by the top 10.

There are over 600 operators with at least one jet on a charter certificate, according to Tuvoli.

That means that smaller and midsized brokers will be looking for new options as big players use newly acquired fleets to serve their membership customers. It also means that we will likely see smaller M&A deals as bigger players continue to add capacity in a market short of aircraft.

I'm a travel writer, but it's not always as glamorous as it sounds. When I fly, I often book commercial in coach for the best price to get my family of four where we need to go.

However, there are posher options that are affordable on a case-by-case and route-by-route basis, and I'm not talking about first class.

Rather, it's entirely possible to fly private or semi-private. In some cases, it can even be cheaper than flying economy and removes the long waits and crowded lines associated with busy airports. And with boarding taking place in private hangars and planes allowing a much lower passenger count, private jets lend more naturally to social distancing.

Considering that June had more private flights in the U.S. than any month since October 2007, and after my own positive experiences flying semi-private , I rounded up some of the best carriers, from chartering your own flight to booking a publicly available seat on a semi-private jet flight. The best part? They offer prices that the average person can afford.

Here are the best private jet companies with affordable prices:

Book a flight with JSX

JSX is a private regional airline that feels like a posh private-flying experience, except the public can purchase tickets. JSX caps flights at just 30 people and operates out of private terminals and hangars (technically known as "fixed-base operators," or FBOs), which are adjacent to many major airports.

JSX saw a 55% increase in new leisure-market customers from February 2020 to February 2021, according to a statistic provided by the brand's internal analytics team. I've flown it multiple times and always choose it when rates are cheaper or equivalent to flying commercial, which they often are.

With JSX , you'll bypass the traditional airport altogether and travel through a private jet terminal. You also won't encounter crowds and TSA lines, but can still feel secure since JSX uses TSA Secure Flight, the same TSA-provided background-check processes that major airlines use.

On ordinary or off-peak dates, the airfare is quite competitive (even lower than some budget carriers' for certain legs) and the experience is far superior, including snacks, drinks (alcoholic and non), checked bags, and pet fees.

Book a flight with Aero

Aero is among the country's newest airlines, launching in February 2021. It offers premium seating on direct flights between private terminals, using custom-designed 16-seat jets; no flight will have more than 16 passengers.

This shared-charter model offers the benefits of private aviation — like bypassing commercial airport terminals and packed airliners — for a fraction of the cost with access to a curated list of coveted destinations.

Aero offers a seamless experience through its personalized concierge service available to all guests, which includes hosts giving personalized attention, from booking on-the-ground transportation and localized experiences to curating in-flight amenities and sourcing special beverages and artisan snacks — basically any preflight and post flight logistics that the passenger wants to be handled.

Interiors are designed by Aero's in-house design team (not common among startup airlines, where design is typically outsourced). Interiors include dynamic lighting, a custom Bongiovi Acoustic Lab sound system built into the panels of the walls for 360-degree sound, hand French-stitched Italian leather seat covers, custom suede sidewalls, and signature ultra-leather piping on the ceiling.

Book a flight with Set Jet

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, Set Jet is a membership-based private jet charter, available for security pre-screened and pre-approved members. While there is a monthly membership fee, if you fly often, the value can be quite strong.

Only members may fly and to be eligible, you must be a U.S. resident with a valid driver's license or passport issued domestically.

Set Jet facilitates private jet charters to six of the most frequently traveled destinations on the West Coast, as well as nonstop private jet charter flights between Los Angeles and New York City, and seasonal flights to Cabo San Lucas and Aspen. The service operates through private terminals without the traditional inconveniences related to commercial air travel.

Members fly on the Bombardier Challenger 850/CRJ 200 and CRJ900 aircraft, specifically customized with 15- to 19- seat cabin configurations. Top-end amenities and finishes make these planes resemble luxury hotel suites with high-gloss wood, marble accents, buttery leather, and plush carpeting. Pilots are typically military-trained jet fighter pilots with significant experience and pristine records.

Book a flight with Wheels Up

Wheels Up allows travelers to book private charter flights at an all-inclusive hourly rate. Founded in 2013 and a publicly traded company as of July 2021, Wheels Up is one of the major players in private aviation, having acquired many others along the way.

Originally a membership-only model, the company now allows anyone to book available flights on-demand using the app. There are 1,500 planes in the fleet, including the King Air 350i (an eight-seater propeller jet), the Cessna Citation Excel/XLS in the middle category (with a four-hour range), and the ultra-fast and high-flying Cessna Citation X, with a large, posh cabin. It can fly over six hours nonstop.

I got to try out two of these on a company-sponsored trip between Los Angeles and Napa. With seven to 10 seats in each aircraft (compared with, say, 30 for JSX or up to 19 on Set Jet), Wheels Up offers a truly elite private jet experience. When I flew the Citation X, the cabin had eight luxurious leather seats and even a posh leather-covered loo. Snacks and beverages were available on-demand in a small lounge area, and the ride was smooth, quiet, and peaceful.

Wheels Up members also receive benefits at Wine Access, Waldorf Astoria hotels; pay-by-the-seat shuttle service from Westchester to Nantucket through Nantucket Shuttle Service; AmEx membership discounts; and many other perks and benefits.

FAQ: Cheap private jet flights

How much does it cost to fly private.

Luxury in the Sky: The Ultimate Guide to Private Jet Travel

TL;DR: Key Takeaways

  • Private jets offer unparalleled luxury and convenience.
  • The global private jet market is booming, with significant growth expected.
  • Access to more airports and personalized service are among the top benefits.
  • Understanding the costs and how to charter a jet are key for interested travelers.
  • Insider tips and tricks to make your private jet experience unforgettable.

The Pinnacle of Personal Travel: Why Private Jets?

With a private jet, you have the flexibility to create your own schedule, choose your own airports, and avoid the unpredictability of commercial flying. This level of convenience and efficiency is invaluable for business travelers, celebrities, or anyone who values their time and privacy. Private aviation also allows for a level of customization that is unmatched by commercial airlines, from bespoke interiors to gourmet catering.

Statistic: According to a report by Grand View Research, the global private jet market size was valued at USD 13.64 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2% from 2021 to 2028. This growth is indicative of the increasing demand for luxury travel and the value placed on privacy, convenience, and time-saving. As the world becomes more connected, and as people seek more personalized and exclusive experiences, the allure of private jet travel continues to soar.

Unmatched Access: The World is Your Oyster

One of the most significant advantages of flying private is the access to a wider range of airports. Commercial airlines are limited to about 550 airports in the U.S., but private jets can take you to over 5,000 airports nationwide. This means you can land closer to your final destination, reducing travel time and hassle. The ability to access smaller, less congested airports not only provides convenience but also ensures a more discreet and efficient travel experience.

With private jet travel , the world truly becomes your oyster. Whether you're flying to a remote island, a bustling city, or a secluded mountain retreat, private jets offer the ultimate in accessibility. This unparalleled access opens up a world of possibilities for personal vacations, business trips, or spontaneous getaways. It allows travelers to explore hidden gems and reach destinations that might otherwise be difficult or time-consuming to access.

Fact: Private jets can use more than 5,000 airports in the U.S., while commercial airlines only reach around 550. This extensive network of airports is a game-changer for travelers seeking convenience, speed, and flexibility. It's not just about getting there faster; it's about making the journey as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

The Status Symbol: More Than Just a Flight

Private jets are more than just a mode of transportation; they are a statement of power, success, and distinction. They offer an elite level of service, privacy, and comfort that is unrivaled. For many, the decision to fly private is about more than just convenience; it's about experiencing the zenith of luxury and personalization. Whether hosting a business meeting in the sky, enjoying quality time with family, or simply relaxing in a bespoke cabin, private jet passengers expect and receive the best of the best.

Quote: "Private jets are the ultimate status symbol for high-net-worth individuals." - Jeffrey Lowe, Managing Director of Asian Sky Group. This quote highlights the prestige associated with private jet travel. It's a world where every detail is curated to reflect the passenger's tastes and preferences, from the flight schedule to the in-flight amenities. In the realm of private jets, the journey is just as important as the destination, and every flight is an opportunity to experience the pinnacle of airborne luxury.

How to Charter a Private Jet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Embarking on the journey of chartering a private jet is an exciting venture into the world of luxury travel. The process, while seemingly complex, can be broken down into manageable steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Initially, define your travel needs by setting a clear itinerary. Consider the number of passengers, destinations, dates, and any specific requirements you might have. This information is crucial in selecting the right aircraft that suits your needs, whether it's a light jet for short trips or a larger, long-range aircraft for international travel.

Next, delve into the vast market of private aviation and select a reputable broker or operator. These professionals offer invaluable expertise and access to a wide range of aircraft. They can guide you through the selection process, ensuring that the jet you choose meets all your criteria for comfort, size, and range. Discuss your preferences and let them tailor the experience to your desires, from in-flight catering to ground transportation.

Understanding the charter agreement is vital. It outlines all the terms, conditions, and costs associated with your charter flight. Pay close attention to details such as cancellation policies, luggage allowances, and any additional fees that might apply. A clear understanding of these elements will help avoid any surprises and ensure a transparent and fair agreement.

Finally, confirm your booking and prepare to enjoy the unparalleled experience of private jet travel. With every detail tailored to your preference, you're set to enjoy the ultimate in luxury, convenience, and efficiency. Welcome aboard your private jet, where the journey is just as important as the destination!

Insider Tips and Uncommon Angles

Maximizing the value of your private jet experience goes beyond simply booking a flight. It involves strategic planning and knowing the industry's best-kept secrets. Here are some insider tips to ensure that every journey you take is as cost-effective as it is luxurious:

Firstly, flexibility is your best friend when it comes to securing the best rates. Private jet pricing can vary significantly based on demand, so if you have the ability to adjust your travel dates, you might find significantly lower prices. Avoid peak travel times and be open to flying on weekdays or during off-peak hours to enjoy quieter skies and better rates.

Secondly, don't overlook the opportunity presented by empty leg flights. These are flights that need to return to their base or reposition for the next customer and are often sold at a fraction of the cost. Subscribing to newsletters or alerts from reputable charter companies can keep you informed about these deals, offering luxury travel experiences at incredibly competitive prices.

Lastly, building a relationship with a charter company can yield numerous benefits. Frequent flyers might find themselves with access to exclusive deals, personalized services, or even complimentary upgrades. A good rapport with your provider ensures that your preferences are known and met with each flight, from your favorite meals to the smallest comfort details, making every journey uniquely yours.

By employing these strategies, you can enjoy the opulence of private jet travel while also being savvy about your investment. Each trip becomes not just a journey but a masterfully crafted experience of luxury and efficiency.

Conclusion: The Sky's the Limit

The allure of private jet travel is undeniable, representing the zenith of luxury , privacy, and convenience. As the epitome of modern travel, it caters to those who demand the highest standards in speed, comfort, and service. Whether you're a business executive seeking efficiency or a leisure traveler desiring the ultimate in exclusivity, private jets provide a tailored experience that commercial flights simply cannot match.

The growing market reflects a broader recognition of the value of time and quality, with more individuals and companies choosing to invest in the unmatched experience of private aviation. As technology advances and accessibility increases, the sky's the limit for the future of private jet travel. Embrace the journey where every detail is refined to perfection, and the world becomes your oyster, all from the comfort of your personal sanctuary above the clouds.

What Is a Private Jet Membership?

A private jet membership is a service available to customers who are looking to have on-demand access to a private jet, without the commitment and responsibility of owning their own aircraft. By entering into a private jet membership, those who travel can pay a fee and have access to private aviation services.

How Does a Private Jet Membership Work?

Through a private jet membership, customers purchase a membership with an upfront fee or monthly subscription, usually contracted for one year or more, to have access to buying flight time on the company’s fleet as needed. Sometimes hours may be limited within certain timeframes and peak flights may incur additional fees.

What To Consider With Private Jet Memberships

There are many things to consider when shopping around for a private jet membership. The most important things to consider are pricing, destination options, and trip protection. Keep in mind that most jet memberships come with hour limitations.

Ideal Traveler Options

When utilizing a private jet membership, flyers have access to all the same amenities that a private jet owner would have. Private concierge and catering services may be provided by your private jet membership company.

Freedom To Fly Wherever You Want

Most jet membership companies operate globally, giving customers the opportunity to fly wherever and whenever they like. If you have specific destinations you plan to fly too often, ensure the jet membership company you choose services airports there.

Clear Consistent Pricing

When purchasing a private jet membership, ensure there are no hidden fees. Flat hourly rates with no peak hours will guarantee you are able to use your membership to its fullest. Look out for blackout dates as well.

Backup and Recovery Plans

Backup and recovery plans are put in place to ensure that if your flight gets canceled for any reason by the jet company, it is rescheduled within an acceptable time frame without additional charges. These plans may be put in place due to maintenance issues or overbooking. Ensure the jet company you plan to purchase a membership from has backup and recovery protection.

Memberships

Most memberships are based on how many hours you plan to fly within a given time and what destinations you plan to go to. Accurately estimate the number of hours you plan to fly before purchasing a membership to avoid unused or short hours.

In a Moment’s Notice

A private jet membership may be perfect for you if you are looking to have access to a private jet on a moment’s notice and don’t want to have to worry about the financial burden and headache of owning your own jets. It is important to choose a private jet membership that meets your needs and can accommodate your lifestyle. For more information about private jet memberships and to stay up to date on all things aviation, subscribe to FLYING Magazine .

The best private jet company is one that meets your specific needs. Ask yourself where you plan to fly, how quickly you need to get there, and how much you are willing to spend before booking a private jet.

Depending on which private jet membership you choose, there can be minimal upfront fees per month of around $370, or large initial membership fees upwards of $200,000.

The most affordable private jet membership is Jettly’s personal membership. It costs $370 per month.

This was a bucket list trip of a lifetime for us. TCS far exceeded any and all expectations. All the personnel in the office, at each of the sites, on the tours, and in the air were professional, courteous and friendly. Everything about the trip was just over the top and we will likely go on another of their spectacular itineraries in the near future!

This Around-the-World by Private Jet…

This Around-the-World by Private Jet excursion will be my first journey with TCS World Travel. My initial encounter was with Rachael, who is extremely personable, knowledgeable, and accommodating. She was very patient in answering many questions and offering suggestions and guidance. I look forward to the next stage of planning for the exciting excursion.

Superb people making the trip wonderful

The Best of Africa is the Best

Great itinerary, great expedition team, great plane and crew, wonderful accommodations and exceptional service throughout makes for the Best of Africa.

What an amazing journey

What an amazing journey. Every step of the way was perfectly organized and stress free thanks to TCS. The trip, the jet, the staff, the hotels and restaurants were all top shelf everywhere we went. Fabulous experiences with great people. We will definitely be travelling again with TCS

This once-in-a-lifetime trip is the perfect way to spend quality time with your partner or to treat yourself to an adventure you’ll never forget. Adults of all ages take our trips, sometimes with a companion and sometimes by themselves. You will meet fellow guests with a curiosity about the world and come away with unforgettable memories and special friendships. It can also help you memorably mark a special occasion, whether it’s an anniversary, birthday, retirement, honeymoon or other milestone.

The minimum age to take our expeditions is 12, but we will consider younger guests on a case-by-case basis.

Shortly after booking, your guest services manager will email you more details about your trip. This dedicated professional will be your main point of contact. He or she will provide you additional information leading up to your departure and is available to answer any questions via phone or email.

Prior to departure, you will receive a set of amenities for your trip. These may include a wheeled bag, a backpack, packing cubes and other useful travel items.

Our trips are a unique opportunity for like-minded travelers who are interested in learning and exploring to come together. The strong friendships forged on our trips continue long after guests return home and open the door to more travel adventures.

On expeditions with 48 or more travelers, daily activities will be divided into intimate groups of 6 to 12, so you never feel like you’re part of a crowd. On all trips, we offer numerous activity options at each destination such as: guided small-group sightseeing, curated shopping, and exclusive visits to museums and landmarks. Other examples include more active options like hikes or snorkeling, as well as unforgettable moments like an intimate guided exploration of Angkor Wat and our hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti.

TCS World Travel is committed to maintaining the quality and safety of the expedition for all participants. Overall, our trips give you the freedom to set your own pace. Each destination on every itinerary offers a variety of options with different activity levels. In some, you may only be walking for short periods of time and have more downtime between excursions, while in others, you may spend the entire day touring or walking over uneven terrain. You may, of course, choose to have a day off and relax at any location.

On all our expeditions, you can expect the following:

  • Uneven ground/frequent walking up to one mile at any given time
  • Walking up the steps to the jet, as many foreign airports do not have jetways
  • Trip pace—only one to three nights in each stop with some late-night activities and early-morning departures
  • Time zone changes
  • High altitude (some expeditions)
  • Changes to your ‘normal’ routine: unique cuisine, frequent packing/unpacking

We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate participants with special needs; however, we cannot accommodate wheelchairs or walkers. If you require a slower pace, extra assistance, or the use of a cane or walking stick, arrangements can be made for private touring at each destination. Any extra cost for such arrangements will be the responsibility of the participant.

Trip Pace Definitions

These icons refer to the overall pace of the trip and not to specific activities at each destination. For example, an expedition classified as moderate or relaxed in overall pace can still offer active options such as hiking or snorkeling.

  • Active Pace: Almost every day fully scheduled, and/or longer flight durations; expedition crosses multiple time zones
  • Moderate Pace: Downtime opportunities every three or four days, and/or shorter flight durations; crosses fewer time zones
  • Relaxed Pace: Many opportunities for relaxation, and/or three-night minimum stays in most destinations

Destination Safety

Before TCS travels to any destination, we vet it for safety. We and our consultant medical advisors, Dr. Thomas Burke  and the BostonMD team, closely monitor all health situations. We monitor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), the US Department of State, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and other third-party destination experts, and are consulting with our trusted local suppliers to evaluate travel to all locations featured on our expeditions.

The beauty of private jet travel is the ease of pivoting. If we need to change an itinerary for any reason, we can use our contacts in countries worldwide to assist us with making alternate arrangements for our group. These changes could be made well in advance of arrival or even while we are in the air en-route to a given location.

On-Trip Resources

On many expeditions, a trip physician will be available to consult with you at your request about general medical health issues such as upper-respiratory infections or gastro-intestinal upsets, which are not uncommon on this type of trip. Should you become seriously ill en route, the trip physician will be able to liaise with local physicians at your request and, if necessary, your medical providers back home, to assist in determining what further care you may require.

On-Trip Activity Level

This is an active program which requires a serious health assessment. There will be walking excursions at nearly every location, and you will need to climb stairs at some of the sites, as well as when you board and disembark the aircraft. There are some airports where you will be responsible for transporting your small wheeled overnight bag. We will have some early-morning departures and late-night activities, and may travel through multiple time zones.

To help counterbalance the carbon footprint that results from flying, starting in 2023 TCS World Travel is investing directly in measurable and meaningful sustainability projects that reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere while positively impacting local communities and protecting local biodiversity.

Our luggage allowances are based on the type of aircraft on which the expedition is offered. On the custom Airbus A321, luggage typically is limited to two checked bags: the wheeled bag we mail you and one additional large suitcase of your own. On expeditions on smaller aircraft like the Fokker 70, guests are allowed the wheeled bag we mail you and one additional smaller bag due to weight restrictions. Bags will be stored in the hold of the jet during our flights, but you will be allowed to take your backpack and another small personal item, such as purse or camera bag, along with you in the cabin.

On many trips, a dedicated expedition staff member handles your luggage throughout the journey. In many destinations, our staff will transfer your luggage directly from the plane to your hotel room. In others, you may be required to walk your bags through customs before handing them over to our staff, but we take over from there. Secure vehicles accompanied by a dedicated expedition staff member are used to transfer luggage between the airport and the hotel on arrival and departure. Often times, your bag is in your room by the time you’re checked into the hotel.

We suggest you bring comfortable clothing that can be layered. One of your most important items is a pair of comfortable shoes for walking. Our guests generally dress up a little for the welcome and farewell dinners, but this is their choice and is certainly not required. Also, you will find slightly more formal dining options at many of the hotels where we stay. For this reason, you may want to bring a few nicer outfits. A more detailed packing list with specific clothing recommendations will be sent to you closer to the departure date. While you’re packing, please keep in mind that laundry services are available at most of our hotels. We also recommend you leave extra space in your suitcase to bring home souvenirs of your journey.

TCS World Travel is committed to safeguarding the security of its guests on every expedition. The company has implemented a set of security processes throughout the journey – from before guests depart to when they touch down in a destination. These processes have been fine-tuned over two decades and more than 300 private jet expeditions and thousands of custom trips to help ensure peace of mind for everyone involved.

All guests must have valid passports to participate in this program. Passports must be valid at least six months beyond the end date of your expedition. If visas are required for the expedition, a visa kit will be sent to you approximately between 6 and 3 months prior to departure depending on destination requirements. We work with an expediting service that helps make getting your required visas easier. Although you’re still required to fill out your visa forms and cover the application costs, they will review the application to make sure it’s complete and liaise with the necessary consulates and embassies to process your visas.

We pre-fill your customs and immigrations forms at every stop—all you have to do is sign. Where possible, our guests enjoy special privileges, such as expedited customs and immigration formalities. We may have a dedicated customs counter for our group and are occasionally allowed to go through without individual clearance.

The price of your expedition incorporates large items like the jet, hotels, transportation and meals, but it also includes many other things, such as activities, top-of-the-line guides, private dinners in restaurants, beverages and every single tip (guides, restaurants, hotel staff, drivers, etc.). In addition, we give you some “walking around money” in the local currency at each stop. We also supply you with all the bottled water you can drink all day every day. We even provide you with postcards that we mail for you—all you have to do is write.

Your expedition includes:

  • Travel on a privately chartered jet
  • First-class accommodations
  • Ground transportation
  • All meals and beverages, including select beer, wine and spirits aboard the jet and group lunches and dinners
  • All sightseeing activities, from guided small-group excursions and private shopping to more active options such as snorkeling and hikes
  • Special events and private access
  • Top local guides and/or on-trip experts
  • A veteran expedition team who handles all logistics
  • On some itineraries, a trip physician who accompanies you throughout your journey
  • All gratuities
  • Luggage handling

Your expedition does not include:

  • Commercial airfare between your home city and departure/arrival destination
  • Optional and additional accident/baggage/cancellation insurance
  • Passport and visa fees
  • Personal expenses such as laundry, telephone and fax fees
  • All beverages not mentioned above as included
  • Hotel minibar charges
  • Meals not scheduled by TCS World Travel
  • Inoculation and medication costs of any kind

Reservation Process

To reserve your place on the Tour, you must complete and sign the Reservation Form and pay your deposit. The deposit can be made by wire transfer or by a major credit card such as American Express, Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card. To cover the cost of processing a credit or charge card transaction, and pursuant to applicable state regulations (including, with respect to Colorado, section 5-2-212, Colorado Revised Statutes), TCS charges a surcharge of 3.0 % for credit card payments. This surcharge is not greater than our merchant discount rate for credit card transactions and does not apply to payment via debit card, ACH or check or redemption of a gift card, or to credit card payments with a billing address in Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Puerto Rico. Your place on the Tour is not reserved until the deposit and signed reservation form are both received.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your reservation or change your plans, your right to receive a refund is limited, as set forth in the trip payment schedule. All cancellations will become effective as of the date of the postmark or email receipt. All requests for refunds must be sent to TCS World Travel in writing via mail, fax or email.

If you are traveling solo and prefer the privacy of your own room, you will be charged a solo traveler supplement. This ensures that individual travelers will get the same type and size rooms as our double occupancy travelers.

The Jet tour is operated by TCS World Travel, dedicated to delivering immersive, worry-free travel experiences for the globally curious and modern luxury traveler. The aircraft is operated by Titan Airways, an IOSA-certified airlines with over 30 years of experience in bespoke air charter travel.

Global health institutions like the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are now categorizing COVID-19 as an endemic disease, similar to other infectious diseases we live with daily. In response to this changing global scenario, most countries have now relaxed or dropped their COVID-19 vaccine and testing regulations – so TCS has adapted our policy as well.

  • While we highly recommend that guests be vaccinated, we are no longer requiring vaccines for guests to travel on a TCS group jet expedition, unless it is required by one of the destinations on the program.
  • There will no longer be required testing for COVID-19 either prior to trip start, at trip start or during your journey, unless it is required by one of the destinations on the program or recommended by the trip physician for treatment support.
  • We will ask any guests who are exhibiting symptoms of illnesses (such as colds or flu) to mask when they are around other guests, helping to reduce transmission and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. We look forward to embarking on an extraordinary journey together as travel gradually returns to normal. Please reach out if you have any questions.

The 8 cheapest ways to get the private jet experience

Benji Stawski

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Once upon a time, extremely wealthy people bought their own planes. Later, other rich people realized they could buy shares in a jet instead of owning one since rare was the person who needed to use it on a daily basis. Today, alternatives to commercial air travel are entering the "Uber age," making airplane travel an on-demand perk as accessible as ordering up a car.

In the space pioneered by venerable players such as NetJets and XO, nimble newcomers are redefining what we'll call "affordable private jet luxury." You no longer necessarily have to pay thousands of dollars per flight; all you need is an app, as little as a few hundred bucks and, often, a tolerance for tiny aircraft.

For the latest travel news, deals and points and miles tips, sign up for our daily newsletter .

The latest wave of growth is just the beginning. "The private jet industry is currently booming," says Andres Morales, executive vice president of global operations for the aviation consultation company Skyline Group MC. "With more companies and individuals buying private aircraft, more jets are flying under capacity, so they look for different ways to offset their cost of ownership. That has resulted in an increase in the accessibility to flying private through different digital platforms that connect the consumer to a private aircraft."

The newer players are capitalizing on three trends.

First, cautious travelers are seeking ways to avoid crowded airport terminals and packed aircraft cabins during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Second, airlines are pulling back from less-profitable routes to smaller airports, complicating commercial travel to second-tier destinations.

And third, elite flyers who typically travel business class are getting fed up with some hassles of flying commercial. Security lines have grown significantly, legroom is shrinking and personal device holders are replacing inflight entertainment screens on some airlines.

Private jet operators are seeing a dramatic rise in demand as a result of the pandemic.

"Unsurprisingly, we have witnessed a substantial increase in the demand for private aviation — both from new members of XO and current members — during this sensitive time triggered by the coronavirus," Ron Silverman, chief commercial officer of California-based on-demand private jet charter company XO, told us. "We expect demand to continue to grow as the situation remains unsettled and we are committed to meeting these requests."

With that in mind, let's look at some of the emerging players in the "affordable private jet luxury" space. While some services on this list are not entirely private, they all offer the convenience of flying out of smaller airports and private terminals where you can usually arrive just minutes before your scheduled departure time and avoid long security lines.

JSX calls itself an "industry disruptor" aiming to "revolutionize the flying experience" with "celeb-worthy flying at an accessible price." Behind the hype is a straightforward proposition: You're buying a seat on a "private" jet rather than chartering the whole plane.

JSX's fleet of Embraer E135 and E145 regional jets operates scheduled service seven days a week between cities throughout the West Coast and Texas, including Burbank, California (BUR); Las Vegas (LAS); Oakland, California (OAK); Santa Ana, California (SNA); Phoenix (PHX); Reno-Tahoe (RNO); Dallas (DAL); Houston (HOU); and more.

JSX also operates various seasonal and pop-up flights, such as to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (SJD). The planes have 30 seats onboard, so they're not truly private, but they're much more spacious than most regional jets and have some other advantages over traditional commercial flights.

A huge part of JSX's selling proposition is being able to arrive just 20 minutes before your flight. The jets operate from private hangars and terminals so there are no long check-in lines, traditional Transportation Security Administration screenings or baggage checks. The Points Guy has experienced JSX multiple times, noting that the experience was remarkably hassle-free .

Flights clock in as low as $129 each way and you can even earn JetBlue TrueBlue points for your flights . Among the believers is JetBlue founder David Neeleman , who invested; JetBlue and Qatar Airways also took a stake.

Although perhaps best known for its continuous helicopter service to airports in New York, Miami and Los Angeles, Blade offers on-demand charters for helicopters, turboprops and any class of private jet to practically anywhere in the world. As you'd expect, chartering an entire plane isn't cheap, but much like JSX, Blade also lets you book by the seat on regularly scheduled flights to popular vacation spots such as Aspen, Colorado; Miami; and Nassau, Bahamas.

Blade also offers a feature called "FlightTilt" that allows you to propose a shared charter on your schedule. The flight is confirmed once four other seats are sold. Alternatively, if you're looking to fly between New York and Florida and want to guarantee your shared charter at the time of booking, you can reserve a minimum of two seats for $3,750 each and allow Blade to sell the remaining seats on your flight.

Blade's scheduled New York-to-Miami service, dubbed BladeOne , is operated using uniquely configured Bombardier CRJ200s that fly between Westchester, New York (HPN), and Miami's Opa Locka Airport (OPF). This type of aircraft is typically used as a regional commercial passenger jet and can hold up to 50 people, but Blade's have been converted into luxury jets for 16.

Onboard, passengers enjoy an array of amenities, such as gourmet food provided by BLT restaurants, iPads preloaded with entertainment, cashmere blankets and specially designed amenity kits with personal care products from boutique brands.

One-way tickets start at $2,850 each (or $3,345, including 15-minute helicopter transfers) between Manhattan and Westchester. What ups the value is that if you purchase a set of two round-trip tickets on BladeOne, you'll also get a room for the weekend at the opulent Faena Hotel Miami Beach . I recently got to experience this service and it was truly A-list from beginning to end.

BladeOne flights to Aspen are operated by a Gulfstream G400 Large Jet and start at $3,500 per seat. Regardless of whether it's a BladeOne or FlightTilt flight, Blade is now requiring all passengers to be fully vaccinated .

If you're new to Blade, you can receive $50 off your first flight when you sign up with the code BRIANF&F. Those under 28 can get discounts on flights between Manhattan and the Hamptons in New York; Nantucket, Massachusetts; and Miami with a Blade-GX membership.

Much like BladeOne, Aero sells seats on shared private jet flights. It offers routes to popular vacation destinations, such as Los Angeles to Aspen; Napa Valley, California; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and Sun Valley, Idaho. On Oct. 14, it will also be launching flights between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Flights depart and arrive in private terminals. They're operated by Embraer ERJ135LR jets, with 16 first-class seats arranged in a 1-1 configuration. Expect generous legroom, ample headroom and complimentary snacks and drinks. Even better, you can change or cancel your trip up to 48 hours before departure.

What if you could fly as often as you want, whenever you want, for a monthly membership fee? That's the concept behind Los Angeles-based Surf Air, which pioneered "all you can fly" in 2013. You can arrive up to 15 minutes before your flight on one of Surf Air's Swiss-built Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turboprops; New York fashion house Bespoken designed the clubby interiors.

Since its U.S. debut, more than 215,000 guests have flown Surf Air between about a dozen West Coast destinations, including Los Angeles, Oakland and Santa Barbara, California. Moving forward, the company plans to improve its operation by honing in on a few key routes, such as the Bay Area to Los Angeles and Dallas to Houston.

The company offers four membership options, ranging from $199 per month to $2,999 per month:

  • Access ($199 per month): Gain access to all flights on a per-seat basis.
  • Advanced ($999 per month): Unlimited off-peak flights for free and access to buy everything else.
  • Freedom ($2,499 per month): Access the majority of flight inventory, including peak flights, for free.
  • Unlimited ($2,999 per month): Fly where and when you want across the entire network with no limits.

The per-seat price for scheduled flights usually starts at $99 for off-peak, $199 for peak and $349 for premium. You can unlock preferred pricing and flight credits with a FoundersCard membership.

Surf Air recently added nationwide on-demand charters to its offerings, with charters starting at $400 per hour. You can choose from thousands of aircraft and book directly online without needing to speak with a broker. Like Blade, Surf Air does not own or operate any aircraft but rather acts as an agent for its members.

If you frequently travel between California, Arizona and Nevada, you might want to consider a Set Jet membership. For $99.95 per month (plus a one-time $99.95 security-check fee) you can book seats on private jet flights along the West Coast for just $450 to $490 each way — basically the cost of a commercial first-class ticket.

Set Jet currently offers flights between Scottsdale, Arizona; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Orange County, California; San Diego; and San Francisco, as well seasonal flights to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Aspen ($1,000 to $1,700 each way).

Rather than have a fixed schedule, flight times are determined by the first person to request the flight. Flights are operated exclusively by Bombardier Challenger 850 aircraft with 13-16 seats. Onboard, you can expect complimentary top-shelf alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, premium snacks and free in-flight Wi-Fi. Set Jet also doesn't charge extra for bags or if you elect to bring a pet along.

In the next 12 months, Set Jet plans to acquire two Embraer Lineage 1000s and launch a $1,000-per-month "elite membership." With this membership, you'll be able to book cross-country flights between Los Angeles and New York for just $3,799 each way.

Wheels Up is one of the biggest players in the industry and has been growing rapidly through the acquisition of companies including Delta Private Jets, Gama Aviation Signature and Mountain Aviation.

It launched in 2013 with a membership-only model focused on an exclusive fleet of Beechcraft King Air 350i aircraft but has since transitioned to a diversified services provider with one of the industry's largest fleets of owned, managed and third-party partner aircraft. Members can choose from more than 1,500 planes, including the King Air 350i, Cessna Citation Excel/XLS, Cessna Citation X and many others in the light jet, midsize jet, super-midsize jet and large-cabin jet categories.

private jet travel companies

It offers three membership tiers — Connect, Core and Business. Initiation fees range from $2,995 in year one for a Connect membership to upward of $29,500 in year one for the Business membership. Annual dues drop to $2,495 and $14,500, respectively, in year two. However, thanks to a new partnership with American Express, you can now get up to 40% off your membership and other perks if you have The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Connect members get access to some of the most popular Wheels Up features, including Hot Flights, which allows you to book discounted empty leg flights — when an aircraft is scheduled to fly without any passengers — for as low as $320 for an entire plane.

Related: Everything you need to know about Wheels Up private jet memberships

Like JSX and Blade, you can also "fly by the seat" on scheduled shuttle or charter flights to popular events. Core and Business members can take advantage of 24- and 48-hour aircraft-type guarantees, plus dynamic pricing with rates capped at $4,695 per hour for a King Air 350i. A midsized partner jet will set you back $7,695 per hour.

Members also have the opportunity to fast-track Delta Medallion status , earn Delta SkyMiles, get discounts on select Delta fares and more. Non-travel "Wheels Down" benefits include access to events such as private parties at Art Basel Miami , the Super Bowl and a hospitality house at the Masters Tournament.

private jet travel companies

In early 2021, Wheels Up quietly opened its mobile app to non-members. Now, anyone can book charter flights, but the rates will be higher. Non-members also don't have the same aircraft-availability guarantees as members or access to features such as shared flights or empty leg Hot Flights.

Related: Yes, you can fly private — here's the secret that will help you do it

While XO made a name for itself through its on-demand charter services, it also offers the ability to purchase individual seats on a growing number of regularly scheduled flights, as well as crowdsourced flights. XO-initiated "shuttle" flights, such as between New York and South Florida, start around $995 for members and $1,390 for non-members. These shuttle flights include a cabin attendant and complimentary food and drinks.

XO also frequently offers empty leg specials which can feature savings of about 50%-75%. While most empty leg specials are for the entire aircraft, XO sometimes even lets you book empty legs by the seat. Just be aware that XO is known for canceling empty legs quite frequently so it's a good idea to have a backup option if your flight is canceled.

XO flights are available to non-members for an additional $395 fee. However, considering entry-level Rise memberships cost just $595 per year, it would make more sense to get one of those if you plan on booking more than two seats per year.

Founder William Herp calls Linear Air an air taxi for regional trips of 700-800 miles, when you don't want to drive and there's no good airline option. On sites like Kayak, he said, "We come up as the only nonstop option between places like New York City and Ithaca or Harrisburg and Bar Harbor, Maine."

The company was founded in 2004 and has grown by more than 1,600% since then. It doesn't own a single plane; like ride-hailing apps, the company partners with operators across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. A straightforward interface lets you request departure and arrival airports by inputting a street address or ZIP code. Herp told TPG that the average transaction comes to about $2,000 for a passenger configuration of three to eight seats. "When you fill up the seats and maximize the opportunity, you're talking about $500-$800 per person," or less than many commercial flights.

Bottom line

There are a number of companies offering charter subscriptions and private jet-like experiences for less than you might think. Since there aren't any reasonable ways to book private jet flights with points and miles, be sure to use a credit card that maximizes the return on private jet travel because there are some serious points-earning opportunities here.

The Platinum Card from American Express is generally an excellent option for booking flights. It earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar for airfare booked directly with the airline or American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), offers numerous travel protections and now even comes with discounts on Wheels Up. However, private flights often don't code as airfare or even travel at all, so you'll probably be better off using a card with a high return on everyday spending , such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Private Jet Interiors

Moscow private jets by interiors and rates.

Light jets and very light jets are cost-effective solutions for shorter flights to and from Moscow. These aircraft are ideal for individual travel, accommodating 4 to 6 passengers, and boast lower hourly rates, starting at $2,600, and a non-stop range of 1100 to 1900 nautical miles.

For those seeking to travel farther and enjoy non-stop travel across the country, midsize and super-midsize jets offer the perfect balance of range, speed, and passenger capacity. These aircraft can accommodate up to 8 passengers, with a non-stop range of 1300 to 4000 nautical miles and hourly rates starting at $3200.

For those who require the ultimate in luxury, speed, and range, large and ultra-long-range jets are the pinnacle of private aviation. These aircraft are particularly suitable for coast-to-coast or intercontinental flights, accommodating up to 16 passengers in the utmost comfort with a range of 3600 to 6700 nautical miles and hourly rates starting at $5600.

Although the interior design of the aircraft may vary from one aircraft to another, the seating configurations will generally look like the sample interior pictures provided.

Moscow aircraft, aircraft available locally by jet type and age, estimate private flight prices to and from moscow, charter jets faq, your ultimate moscow charter resource, do i have to stop for customs when i fly on a private jet.

Passengers on all international private charter flights will have to stop at customs. In certain countries, you may have to go through customs at a specific port of entry; for example, you must stop in Tahiti to perform customs checks en route to Bora Bora. You’ll also need to stop at the first port of entry when entering the U.S. from Mexico.

How much rest does the crew need before they can depart again?

Crew members are required to have a 10-hour rest period within each 24-hour cycle. The maximum duty day is 14 hours and must be followed by a 10-hour rest period at their hotel. When scheduling a flight, operators usually account for 12 hours of rest instead of 10. These extra two hours allow the crew time to get to their hotel, rest for the required time, and return to the airport.

How long does a fuel stop for a private jet flight take?

The average fuel stop takes 45–60 minutes. To speed up fuel stops, the operator, or pilots may call ahead, so a fuel truck is waiting for the aircraft on arrival. For smaller jets, a fuel stop can take as little as 30 minutes.

Will my private jet charter use the same airport as a commercial airline?

No. When you charter a private jet, you generally fly into a private airport. However, you could access the same airports as a commercial airline if you request to do so or if there are no private airport options. However, using a large mainstream airport like Los Angeles International or London Heathrow is often a bad choice for private jets, as flying to a smaller regional private airport is much faster and often makes for a more luxurious experience.

Is the age of an aircraft a safety factor?

Aircraft age is not a safety factor. However, if the aircraft is older and hasn’t been refurbished properly, it may cause flyers some inconvenience, such as overheating, faulty air conditioning, or faulty plumbing in the lavatory.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring on a private jet?

As a rule of thumb, each seat on a light or midsize jet equates to one passenger and one item of luggage. Each item of luggage is considered to be the standard 23 kilograms, or about 50 lbs. Large jets are designed for long-range trips, which typically involve longer stays, so you can carry more than one item of luggage per person.

Are there aircraft that are wheelchair accessible?

There are many aircraft that are wheelchair accessible. Most of them are large jets or above and have a straight aisle. If the jet has a zigzag aisle – like the Falcon 900 – it will be difficult to maneuver the wheelchair onboard the aircraft. You’ll also need the right type of wheelchair; many motorized wheelchairs won’t fit and can’t be collapsed. If this is the case, you’ll need a smaller, temporary wheelchair. Some aircraft operators have smaller wheelchairs that can be used. Please speak with your Paramount private jet expert to review your aircraft options.

Can I fly with large sums of cash?

Yes, you can. This is a common occurrence for many private jet clients. You can fly with up to $5 million in cash as long as you declare that cash when coming through customs. For domestic trips, there’s no limit and no need to declare it.

Which private jets come with flight attendants?

In the United States, large jets and above are required to have flight attendants onboard; in Europe, flight attendants are used on midsize jets and above. Flight attendants require their own seats. Larger jets and above have a jump seat near the cockpit for the flight attendant to use, meaning the attendant generally stays out of the cabin.

Which airports offer ramp access, allowing the client to drive their car right up to their private jet?

Private jet clients can often have a limo drive them right up to the private jet, or even drive their own car to the plane. That said, different airports have different policies, and some may not offer ramp access. Please speak with your Paramount Aviation Advisor to review your options for a given trip.

Do private jets come with Wi-Fi?

Many private jets do have Wi-Fi, and it’s increasingly available free of charge on U.S. domestic flights. On international flights, prices range from $3.00-$8.50 USD per megabyte used. This means that opening up social media sites that are rich in images and videos could quickly cost you $20 – and downloading a feature-length movie could cost thousands!

When is on-demand private jet charter better than buying a block of hours?

Private jet charter can be a lot cheaper than buying a block of hours for a one-way flight, as you can access floating fleets or an empty leg to reduce the cost. With a block of hours, the price covers a round trip. If you only fly one-way, you are effectively paying double.

What is a carbon-neutral flight?

Every aircraft burns jet fuel and emits a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This can be offset via one of several carbon offset programs that allow private jet clients to purchase a certain number of carbon credits to offset the emissions from their flights. A carbon-neutral flight is one that offsets the carbon emissions it uses via a formal process.

Can I have a flexible departure time for my private jet flight?

Yes, it is possible to have a flexible departure when flying privately. Operators typically offer a 30-minute to two-hour window, but you can request a longer window as long as it doesn’t interfere with the maximum crew duty day or their next scheduled flight. Please confirm with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking your jet.

When should I hire a Boeing Business Jet?

Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) have unique amenities that extend far beyond sheer size and are often equipped with 1-2 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms (one more of those bathrooms may even offer stand-up showers.) These airliner-based executive aircraft also feature tall or ‘stand-up’ cabins that are also longer and wider than more typical corporate aircraft.

How soon can I have a private jet ready from the time I call in the request?

Generally speaking, with as little as 4 hours of notice. However, we have had wheels up in as little as 32 minutes from the time our client called us to book the flight and had them in the air. It depends on a few factors, such as how long it takes for the pilots to arrive at the airport (generally, there is a 2-hour call-out time for the pilots), and whether the aircraft is ready to go at the airport with no repositioning needed. Our Jet Card members enjoy faster booking since they have funds on account and can confirm a flight with a simple email.

Can I access my luggage while in flight?

On most private jets, you will be able to access your luggage during the flight. That’s because luggage and passengers are situated on the same level. This is in contrast to commercial airlines, where checked luggage is stored in a cargo hold. On large private jets, luggage is often stored in a compartment behind the lavatory, which means easy access to your bags.

When are private jet charter landing and takeoff slots applicable?

A landing or takeoff slot is simply a small window of time in which your aircraft is scheduled to fly in or out of the airport. You will need a landing and takeoff slot if you fly to a high-density airport in the United States or one that is hosting a special event with a significant number of aircraft arriving and departing. If you’re flying internationally, you will need a landing and takeoff slot for all major European cities. Please check with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking for a specific route.

What kind of in-flight catering is available on a private jet?

Other than the standard snacks and drinks, you can order local cuisine options for your catering on board. In short, anything that doesn’t need to be cooked can be ordered; hot food must be precooked and then warmed on board.

Can I bring pets with me on private jet flights?

Of course! Just let us know in advance. The majority of the operators and aircraft owners allow pets onboard. In some cases, a small cleaning fee may apply. That said, there are specific requirements that must be met when traveling with your pet, including making sure that all documentation and vaccination records for your pet(s) are correct and up-to-date. Dogs and cats must also be at least eight weeks old and weaned when traveling within the U.S.

USA by Numbers

12 Best Private Jet Companies in the US [Update 2024]

Avatar

With an almost infinite variety of ways to travel, the private jet business has witnessed remarkable expansion in recent years. It’s practically hard to keep track of all the options with so many private jet charters, operators, and brokers.

When you include partial ownership or the possibility to reserve a single seat on a shared plane, the private jet possibilities become even more daunting. As a result, we’ve combed through the possibilities for you.

Here’s all you need to know about the top private jet companies in the US right now.

private jet travel companies

Founded in 1964, NetJets is an entirely owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, which is led by Warren Buffett. It also owns Executive Jet Management and QS Partners and its namesake brand of fractionally owned private planes.

According to Argus, although NetJets is the world’s largest private jet operator, Executive Jet Management is the second-biggest Part 135 operator. In 2019, they logged a total of 459,187 flying hours. This accounts for 21.4 per cent of the combined Part 135/91K market and 10.2 per cent of the entire market in the United States. Also, it owns and operates 750 aeroplanes and annually flies over 127 million nautical miles to 5,000 locations throughout the world. QS Partners is an aviation broker that focuses on old aeroplanes.

Brands:  NetJets, QS Partners, Executive Jet Management

Consumers Products:  Aircraft management, on-demand Charter, used aircraft sales, fractional ownership and leases.

2. Wheels Up

Wheels Up is one of the Best Private Jet Companies in the US

Kenny Dichter, the creator of Wheels Up , was also a co-founder of Marquis Jet, the company that gave birth to the jet card. Wheels Up jets may be requested 24 hours in advance of your departure using their app. Wheels Up offer a 90-plane members-only fleet that includes some of the most elite private jets, such as the King Air 350i and the Citation Excel/XLS, which each accommodate eight people.

TMC Jets, purchased in June 2019, Delta Private Jets, purchased in January 2020, and most recently Gama Signature Aviation, purchased in March, make up Wheels Up Group, which includes three of the nine major Part 135 private jet operators. Although Delta Air Lines is a small stake, it is the largest. It was founded in 2013.

With a total of 160,161 flight hours in 2019, the high-profile brand is the second-largest private aircraft commercial operator in the United States.

Gama was the most active Part 135 operator in 2019, according to Argus, accumulating 103,096 hours. TMC Jets was placed ninth on the Part 135 list, while Delta Private Jets was fourth. Wheels Up has a 7.5 per cent market share in Part 135/91K and a 3.6 per cent market share overall. Avianis is a B2B technology platform that was also bought in 2019.

Brands:  Wheels Up, Travel Management Company (TMC) Jets, Avianis, Gama Signature Aviation, Delta Private Jets.

Consumer Products:  Jet Cards, Aircraft Management,  Empty Legs, On-Demand Charter, Jet Sharing, Jet Memberships.

3. Directional Aviation/ OneSky Flight

private jet travel companies

Directional Aviation owns Flexjet, Flight Options, Sentient Jet, PrivateFly, and FXAIR, all of which are brokers, are part of OneSky Flight LLC, which is founded in 1981. Tuvoli is a charter broker B2B payment platform. Directional, which was founded by Kenn Ricci, owns Nextant Aerospace, Constant Aviation, and other commercial aviation enterprises. The overall sales of the company were expected to be around $2.5 billion in 2017.

If you’re unfamiliar with Flight Options, that’s because Directional has been shutting it down in favour of focusing on the Flexjet label, which was acquired in 2012. Because the bulk of Argus’ flights are for fractional clients, both are classified as Part 91K.

OneSky Flight is the third-largest private jet operator on my list, with 130,379 flight hours.

When it comes to offering private aircraft travel options, the organization is larger than those figures imply. Sentient sells roughly $300 million in jet cards each year, and PrivateFly is estimated to be worth roughly $50 million. However, Argus data only shows flight hours for Part 135 and 91K operators; it does not include extra hours purchased from other charter operators when their fleets are unable to meet client demand.

Brands:  FXAIR, FlexJet, Flight Options, NextAnt Aerospace, PrivateFly, Tuvoli, Corporate Wings, FlairJet, Sirio, Constant Aviation, Sentient Jets.

Consumer Products: Aircraft Management, Jet Memberships, Jet Cards, On-Demand Charter, Fractional Ownership and Leases, Empty Legs.

4. Vista Global Holdings

The fourth position ranking for Vista Global Holdings is based on the flights of a firm in which it is a minority shareholder. Thomas Flohr, the company’s founder and largest shareholder, leads it since its establishment in 2004. Rhone Capital has been a longtime backer of the company.

VistaJet is the first private jet firm with global services in its fleet. Several companies worldwide charter private aircraft, but no other companies completely charter them with their fleets.

By abolishing aircraft placement fees for their members, VistaJet has established the high bar and is an operator of a fleet of 70 Global and Challenger aeroplanes serving 187 countries around the world. As stated above, VistaJet belongs to the Vista Group, which also owns XO, and though not necessarily competitive, it remains two different businesses.

Vista Global relaunched XOJET as XO, powered by JetSmarter technology, after merging it with the JetSmarter mobile app. In terms of functionality, XO continues to be a prominent participant in the private jet charter sector. Bombardier Challenger 300 aeroplanes and Cessna Citation X planes are still in service. With a 2.4 per cent share of the transitory industry and 1.1 per cent of the entire US market, XOJET Aviation came in fourth on this list with 51,741 flight hours.

VistaJet is the most international airline in the sector. While second-placed Wheels Up Group and third-placed Directional Aviation are mostly focused on the United States, VistaJet has a larger international presence.

Brands:  VistaJets, XO, XOJET Aviation, JetSmarter (dormant)

Consumer Products: Aircraft Management, Leases, Jet Cards, Jet Memberships, On-Demand Charter, Jet Sharing, Empty Legs

5. PlaneSense

PlaneSense , based in New Hampshire, sells fractional ownership and leases on a fleet of Pilatus PC-24 and PC-12 planes. The Swiss-made private plane and propeller are noted for their ability to land on non-paved airstrips and short runway performance. The company’s core service area has been shifting westward

Former McKinsey consultant George Antoniadis, the company’s founder and CEO, continues to lead the company he founded in 1995.

Brands:  PlaneSense

Consumer Products:  Fractional Ownership and Leases

6. Jet Linx Aviation

Founded in 1999, Jet Linx Aviation has private terminals in 18 locations across the United States, from Atlanta to Dallas to Denver and Detroit, each with its own service staff. They call themselves a “personal jet business” since they customize their premium service to meet your specific requirements. If you visit the same hangar, you’ll likely come to know the local high-end jet, pilot, and flight team over the duration of your membership.

Jet Linx Aviation, established in Omaha, handles private planes and sells jet card time when owners aren’t using them. It maintains private terminals in 19 marketplaces that are exclusively accessible to jet cardholders and owners.

Jamie Walker, the company’s CEO, is the son of the company’s founder.

Its high-touch service includes polishing your car while you’re gone and refilling the lounge with your favourite beverages. Your vehicle will be valeted and ready to use when you return. To put it another way, you won’t have to look for your car in the parking lot or clean it of snow.

It has expanded to Austin, Boston, Chicago, and New York in the last year, as well as opening a second site at SUS in St. Louis.

Brands:  Jet Linx Aviation

Consumer Products: Aircraft Management, Jet Cards, Jet Sharing, Empty Legs

7. Solairus Aviation

Solairus Aviation , based in Petaluma, California, and launched in 2009, provides aircraft management and a range of private jet charter services, as well as private jet card programs. Solairus has its own charter fleet of managed aircraft in addition to a global charter network. Solairus Aviation’s Altitude By Solairus is a private membership charter club.

Only two Part 135 operators, Solairus Aviation and NetJets, have publicly stated that they did not file for CARES Act Relief. Its jet card program offers 60-minute minimums in all cabin classifications, from light to big.

Privately owned Dan Drohan, the company’s CEO and founder, is an ATP-rated pilot with various business jet credentials and an industry veteran.

Brands:  Solairus Aviation

Consumer Products:  Aircraft Management, Jet Cards, On-Demand Charter

8. Jet Edge

The eighth private jet company on my list is Jet Edge . In 2007, Bill Papariella, the company’s CEO, co-founded it. NetJets, Marquis Jet Partners, and Sentient Jet have all employed him. Even if you haven’t heard of Jet Edge, chances are you’ve flown with them. The majority of the company’s sales are made through brokers, including jet card issuers. JetSmarter’s scheduled shuttle flights were also operated by it.

It bought Jet Select, LLC earlier this year. According to the FAA, Jet Select holds a Part 135 certificate on 20 of its aircraft. We know the operator accumulated less than 7,354 on-demand and jet card flight hours in 2019 because it isn’t on the Argus list of the Top 25 Part 135 operators. Since Jet Edge flew 22,549 hours, extending Jet Select’s charter flights to our 7th slot is a possibility.

Jet Edge and Jet Select don’t give jet cards, making them one of just two players in my Top 10 who don’t.

Brands: Jet Edge, Jet Select

Consumer Products: Used Aircraft Sales, Aircraft Management, On-Demand Charter, Empty Legs

9. Exclusive Jets (Fly Exclusive)

The firm Exclusive Jets , which was founded by Jim Segrave, who previously sold Segrave Aviation to Delta Air Lines in 2010, intends to expand its existing fleet of 70 private planes to 100. Light, midrange, and super-midsize private planes are available through its Jet Club membership program, which began in May 2020.

Mike Guina, who left Segrave Aviation for Delta Private Jets following the sale, has rejoined his former boss as president of FlyExclusive.

Brands: FlyExclusive

Consumer Products:  Aircraft Management, Jet Cards, On-Demand Charter

Be aware of these most dangerous airports in the US .

10. Mountain Aviation

Mountain Aviation is the tenth private jet company in the United States, with approximately 60 aircraft serving domestic and international destinations. Their size, along with the industry’s best operations staff, allows them to create an exceptional client experience. Their sales team is simple to work with and has a kind demeanour. They attempt to make all of their clients feel like they own the company by providing clear pricing and trip planning. Their flight crews have a lot of personalities and love flying for a career. Their personnel are unaffected by families, pets, or changes in travel plans.

It has more than 17,714 annual flight hours which covers 0.8% of part 135/90k share. For more than two decades, they have supplied top charter and owner-operated aircraft services to the Colorado Rocky Mountain Region. Mountain Aviation has established itself as the leader in business aviation in the Colorado Rocky Mountain Region, with 24-hour scheduling, flight monitoring, and unrivalled Citation Jet fleet availability.

Brands:  Mountain Aviation

Consumer Products:  Used Aircraft Sales, Aircraft Management, On-Demand Charter, Empty Legs

11. Executive Flight Services (AirShare)

Executive Flight Services is expanding its service offerings by managing a growing fleet of planes. It added a new Embraer Legacy 500 and a Phenom 100 EV to its fleet today. EFS expands its turnkey management skills by integrating these advanced aircraft into its stable, giving clients more expertise in operating and managing innovative aviation equipment.

Executive Flight Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Executive AirShare, takes delivery of one of Embraer’s first Phenom 100 EVs. It’s also the first to participate in a fleet program. The plane is now in the Kansas City region.

The Legacy 500, which is headquartered at Fort Worth Meacham Airport and was recently extended, has also joined the Executive Flight Services charter fleet. Executive Flight Services currently has four charter aircraft serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

12. Clay Lacy Aviation

Clay Lacy is the world’s most experienced private jet operator, having been founded in 1968 by an aviation legend and industry pioneer which is the last private jet company in my list. They have managed, maintained, and operated jet aircraft from every major manufacturer over the past 50 years.

Business and international leaders, Fortune 500 organizations, government organizations, professional athletes, sports franchises, celebrities, and dignitaries have all benefited from our services. Providing the best level of security, service, and value to their customers.

Even huge firms that can afford a fleet may not find it financially viable to do so. Instead of owning a plane, jet charter businesses have banded together to offer the same level of concierge care to clients from all walks of life, not just the super-rich.

A list of 5 f1 drivers that use private jets.

Some teams use private jets, while other drivers own their aircraft to travel across the globe.

  • Formula 1 drivers travel between races in various ways, with some drivers owning their own private jets.
  • Some teams, like Scuderia Ferrari, have partnered with the private jet charter company VistaJet.
  • Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and Max Verstappen had or still have their own private jets to get to races and other destinations.

With Formula 1 being the epitome of luxury, you can only assume that private jet usage is rampant within the sport, with drivers, executives, and sponsors flying out to races with private aircraft. Some drivers own their private jets, while others utilize aircraft provided by the teams, which includes partnerships with charter companies.

At times, drivers have to resort to flying commercially. For example, Kevin Magnussen, a driver for the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team, had to miss team activities on one day at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2023. As reported by Autoweek , the Dane was bumped from a flight between Mexico and Brazil and was forced to find an alternative way to get to the latter country, with Magnussen flying through Bogota, Colombia, to reach Sao Paolo, Brazil.

  • Aircraft flying on: HondaJet Elite

While Honda, as a car manufacturer, has withdrawn from the sport as an engine marker, pledging to return in 2026, it has continued to work with Red Bull Powertrains to provide power units to Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team, its sister team.

However, in 2020, Honda Aircraft Company delivered a HondaJet Elite to AlphaTauri, which is now known as the Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team. As recently as September 2023, HondaJet posted on Instagram that the partnership with AlphaTauri has continued, with the private jet sporting the F1 team’s livery.

Whether that partnership has remained to this day remains to be seen, with the aircraft, registered as OE-FAA, flying as recently as April 18, when it operated several flights between Salzburg Airport (SZG) and St. Gallen Altenrhein Airport (ACH). Meanwhile, the F1 circuit visited the Shanghai International Circuit on April 21 and a few days before, meaning that the private jet was not in China for the race.

Why Is The HondaJet So Popular?

4 carlos sainz and charles leclerc, representing: scuderia ferrari.

  • Aircraft flying on: VistaJet’s fleet

Meanwhile, Scuderia Ferrari, represented by Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, has a partnership with VistaJet, a private jet charter company that also owns a fleet of aircraft from various manufacturers, including Bombardier, Cessna, Embraer, Dassault, and Gulfstream. Nevertheless, VistaJet said that as the team’s official partner it,

“[…] is flying the team between races throughout the Formula 1 season. With often only days between Grands Prix, VistaJet will be flying across five continents to support Scuderia Ferrari in this truly global competition.”

3 lewis hamilton, representing: mercedes amg petronas f1 team.

  • Aircraft sold: Bombardier Challenger 605

While Lewis Hamilton has since sold his Bombardier Challenger 605, the joint-record holder for the most F1 World Drivers' Champions (WDC), the British driver had the aircraft for quite a while. The distinct cherry livery charted Hamilton, as well as his dogs, until 2019 when the driver parted ways with the Challenger 605.

The aircraft was registered as G-LCDH, with it being active on the radar almost three years ago when it was operated by London Executive Aviation Ltd 11EB, according to data by FlightAware . Presumably, it has been sold off and re-registered.

Why Did Lewis Hamilton Sell His Cherry Red Bombardier Challenger?

2 fernando alonso, representing: aston martin aramco f1 team.

  • Aircraft flying on: Dassault Falcon 900

Fernando Alonso, the driver with the most experience on the grid, has been the owner of a Dassault Falcon 900 trijet. The Spaniard has also partnered with EMCJET, a full-service aircraft brokerage and management company in 2020. At the time, the company said that Alonso became its official private aviation partner. Memo Montemayor, the Founder and President of EMCJET, said that Alonso is a great athlete, business owner, and philanthropist.

“We are delighted to partner with him as he travels the globe for his races and business.”

However, EMCJET did not detail much about the partnership and whether the company would take over the management of Alonso’s private jet. The Spanish driver has published two Instagram posts in January 2021 and January 2022 about traveling with EMCJET. His 2023 helmet included the company’s logo, meaning that the driver still had partnered with the company at the time. Whether that partnership has remained in place is unclear.

  • Aircraft flying on: Dassault Falcon 900EX

While Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher share the record for the most WDC titles, Max Verstappen is hot on their heels, with the Dutch driver having won three titles in a row. And as Verstappen continues dominating the sport, he jets around the world using his Dassault Falcon 900EX private jet, registered as PH-OTF.

The aircraft sports a distinct all-black livery with orange accents, representing Verstappen’s home country of the Netherlands. However, the aircraft does not appear on flight tracking websites, including ADS-B Exchange, which typically shows aircraft that are not shown on traditional flight tracking sites.

Private Jets Leave NY Minutes Before Midnight as Rich Flee Taxes

By Laura Nahmias and Eliyahu Kamisher

Laura Nahmias

At New Jersey’s Teterboro and Long Island’s Islip airports, dozens of private jets destined for Florida take off at times such as 11:42 p.m. or 11:54 p.m.

Over at JFK, a regular flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, arrives at a seemingly purposeful time: about 15 minutes after midnight.

Meanwhile, tax attorneys tell stories of clients idling in their luxury SUVs near the New Jersey entrance to the George Washington Bridge shortly before 12 a.m., waiting for the clock to turn before crossing the state line to New York.

When it comes to taxes and the wealthy, every minute matters — especially for those who have left New York and declared residency elsewhere. At a time more high earners are departing, or at least are claiming to, state officials are stepping up already-intense scrutiny to make sure former residents have actually moved. It’s a complex operation that involves cutting-edge artificial intelligence and tracking everything from travel to the location of people’s pets.

For the ultrarich, even just an extra day in the wrong place could mean millions in income-tax liability.

“The minute you file a partial return you’re going to hear from New York state,” said Jonathan Mariner , who created TaxDay, an app that tracks users’ locations so they don’t overstay the threshold of days that would trigger residency status , which is typically 184.

The whereabouts of the wealthy are particularly important to New York, a high-tax area where the loss of even a handful of rich residents can have an outsized effect on budget revenue. The state has been especially hard hit by departures since Covid-19 fueled the rise of remote work: The number of taxpayers earning more than $1 million who moved out more than doubled in 2020 from 2019 and has continued each year to be well above pre-pandemic levels, according to the Department of Taxation and Finance.

That’s leading state officials to try to claw back money wherever possible through residency audits — an investigation into whether someone correctly identified themselves as a full-time, part-time, or nonresident for income-tax purposes. It’s also taking place in California, another relatively high-tax, high-departure state facing budget strains , where the number of residency audits closed in the first 11 months of 2023 more than doubled from before the pandemic.

For some of these people, often accustomed to the privacy and ease afforded by wealth, a residency audit can be an uncomfortable dive into their daily life. New York’s auditors closely watch travel and apply a standard known as “the teddy bear test,” looking to see where individuals keep their most cherished possessions to determine whether a home is their primary residence.

“We always tell people the tax audit from New York is like the tax version of a colonoscopy,” said Mark Klein , a tax attorney at Hodgson Russ .

“I’ve had cases that have hinged on a single dog,” Klein said. “And I had a case once that was based on the fact that the person moved their Peloton bicycle to Florida.”

Counting Days

Residency audits have long been big business in New York. The state collected roughly $1 billion from 15,000 audits between 2013 and 2017, according to data obtained through a Freedom of Information request. While California lags behind New York in the scale and complexity of its residency audit operation, the Golden State collected $85 million in residency audit income last year through November, the largest single-year tally in at least a decade.

Both states are still recording overall growth in the number of millionaires , thanks to income and stock-market gains, but the key for tax officials is making sure they’ve genuinely left. Since the pandemic, higher-income people moved out at a faster pace than they moved in, data from both states show. While wealthy residents have long pretended to leave to dodge taxes, tax experts say Covid brought more legitimate moves as companies embraced flexible work and set up outposts in places such as Florida and Texas , which have no state individual income tax.

New York’s tax laws are notoriously tricky. Typically, someone who lives there will be considered a resident for tax purposes, paying levies on their income from all sources, even those outside of the state. But the state considers someone a resident even if they don’t live there, as long as they’ve spent more than 183 days in New York and maintain a “permanent place of abode,” which could simply be a vacation home.

A few hours spent in New York qualifies as a whole day. Getting off the highway in New York for lunch while driving from New Jersey to Connecticut can count. So can getting outpatient treatment at a New York hospital. When you can’t prove where you were on a given day, New York auditors may assume you were in the state.

“Even though you have a Florida driver’s license, Florida voting record, Florida home, it does not matter,” said Mariner, who created his app after facing his own residency audit after moving to the Sunshine State. “You could be on vacation in New York and they’ll pull you back in.”

New York’s Department of Taxation and Finance has 300 auditors dedicated to conducting residency audits, and they are notorious for their thoroughness. Bank records, phone bills and family photos are under the microscope. Auditors are backed up by sophisticated artificial intelligence-fueled tax monitoring systems that flag inconsistencies in returns.

California, which has far fewer workers traveling across state lines on a daily basis, typically employs around 30 to 35 auditors, according to Andrew LePage, spokesperson for the state’s Franchise Tax Board. He said there hasn’t been increased enforcement through the residency audit department.

Still, Chris Parker , a principal with accounting firm Moss Adams in Sacramento, said he’s noticed increased attention from state employees charged with recouping tax income from wealthy individuals who say they have left California.

In one situation, an auditor asked a client for death records of their deceased dog and the veterinarian that handled the body, he said. Another case under appeal involves a tech investor who moved to Nevada but could be liable for $6 million in taxes because of frequent visits to California to race high-performance sports cars.

“People who moved to another state are not criminals because of their move, and yet they are regularly treated like such,” said Parker, who spent over a decade working for the state’s tax department.

‘Incredibly Reliant’

Although the total number of taxpayers leaving New York and California from 2020 to 2022 was highest among low and middle-income people, the flight of the richest individuals has an especially large impact on budgets. People earning over $1 million each year made up just 1.6% of tax filers, but paid 44.5% of the state’s total personal income taxes in 2021, New York Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said in a recent report. In California, nearly half of the state’s income taxes come from the top 1% of earners.

“We are incredibly reliant on New York’s high earners for our income tax revenue,” Amanda Hiller , the state’s acting tax commissioner, told an audience of civic leaders at a panel discussion on New York’s economic future last fall, where panelists joked about the well-timed flights and tactics of those trying to dodge residency taxes. The state doesn’t know whether millionaires are leaving because of tax policy, but officials are closely studying their movements in search of an answer, Hiller said.

In the meantime, a cottage industry is rising to serve the taxpayers navigating these issues. A residency tracking app called Chrono , which uses biometric data to prove users’ whereabouts, launched in 2021. Co-founder Luke McGuinness said it stemmed from the frustration he and friends felt as “digital nomads,” a growing class of people who work remotely and travel regularly.

Another tracking system, Monaeo , automatically logs users’ locations to create detailed records of their whereabouts. It was developed more than a decade ago but has seen an enormous increase in downloads since the pandemic, said Bill Mastin , chief executive officer of Topia , which owns the app.

“I would say 60% to 70% of our user base is specifically tied to New York,” he said.
