Via Public Transport: 

The nearest railway station is Lonavala/Kamshet, where you can take a shared rickshaw or a bus to Tikona village. The buses from Kamshet run at a frequency of every hour to Tikona Peth.

The distance from Lonavala is around 36 km, while from Kamshet, the distance is about 20 km. 

The trekking trail starts from  Tikona Peth , a small village at the base of the fort.

Via Private Vehicle:

• The distance from Mumbai to Tikona Peth is around 120 kms which can be covered in 3 hours.  Get Directions
• The distance from Pune to Tikona Peth is around 50 km which takes around 1:45 hours.  Get Directions
• You can pay & park at the base village before starting the trek.

TIKONA FORT

Tikona Fort is a dominant hill fortress of Konkan’s Pawan Maval region. This is Maharashtra’s popular one-day trekking spot. Locally, it is famous by the name Vitandgad. Situated on top of the Tikona peak, this fort has an altitude of 3633 feet from the sea level. If you take a look at its present-day geography, it resembles a triangle and thus named as Tikona. Large fortifications, seven water tanks filled with crystal clear water, large doorways, and spectacular surrounding views from its bastion sums up the beauty of this place. Sahyadri’s green hillocks are just like cherries on the cake! Many Maratha dynasties have marked their presence here in the past and also, Tikona Fort was known as the centre for Pauna Mawal’s primary activities. Tikona Fort’s entrance itself represents beauty with sophistication. As soon as you pass through it, you will witness the presence of Buddhist and Satavahana Caves within. Both types of caves have great significance in Indian history. Besides, there’s a small Trimbakeshwar Mahadev temple inside which revives the spiritual beliefs of the first residents of this fort. With no wonders, Tikona Fort is blessed with some stunning landscapes attracting heaps of trekking enthusiasts and those who love Mother Nature. How To Reach

By Train:  From Mumbai: Tikona Fort is situated at a distance of 120 km from Mumbai. To travel here by train, you can catch a Pune train and get down at Lonavala. Once you do that, inquire either for a local train or bus and get down at Kamshet. From Kamshet, you need to catch a bus to drop you at Tikona Peth. After that, you may inquire about the Tikona Fort Trekking route. From Pune: The distance between Pune and Tikona Fort is 60 km. If you are coming from Pune, you need to catch a local train to drop you at Lonavala. From there, you can either opt for a train or bus to Kamshet. From Kamshet, you need to catch a bus for Tikona Peth. After that, you may inquire about the Tikona Fort Trekking route. From Lonavala: Lonavala has regular buses to take you to Kamshet. From Kamshet, you need to catch a bus to drop you at Tikona Peth. After that, you may inquire about the Tikona Fort Trekking route. By Bus: Several buses are running between Mumbai or Pune and Tikona Fort. In case you are travelling here in your private car or bike, you may opt for NH48 and then redirect yourself on Pavana Nagar Kamshet Road. This road will drive you to the Tikona Peth. A bus from Mumbai will consume around 2 hours and 45 minutes to drop you to the Tikona Peth while a bus from Pune will consume 1 hour and 45 minutes.  By Air:  Lohegaon is the nearest airport to reach Tikona Fort. After that, you can opt either for the local bus or rental cab service to drop you to the Tikona Peth.

Best Time To Visit

Tikona Fort is an all-season tourist attraction in India. You can plan your visit at any point of time; as every season here portrays a different beauty of the landscape. Tikona in Summers: Summers are hot and humid here. You can expect the temperature to range from 25 to 35 degrees. Locals plan night trekking here to beat the heat of summer. This being an off-season for tourist activities, you will easily find the best affordable stay options here. Tikona in Monsoons: The period between June to September is reserved for the showers. The weather remains pleasant, and the region gets covered with lush green forest stretch. Although it is not advisable to trek at Tikona during monsoons, the natural beauty here in this season is truly outstanding. Tikona in Winters: The months between October to March mark the winter season in Tikona. Winter temperature ranges from 11 to 25 degrees. As the monsoon clouds start fading away, what remains behind is the lush green hills covered with a blanket of dew. This is the reason why you get to see more of trekking and hiking activities during the winters.

Mobile Connectivity:  Tikona Fort has limited mobile connectivity for the most popular cellular network service providers. However, once you reach the top summit, even those networks seem to be defunct. ATMs:  There are no ATM facilities at the top of Tikona Fort. It is better to withdraw the necessary amount at Lonavala or Kamshet itself. Food Points: Neither there are any restaurants nor food points throughout your Tikona Fort’s trekking route. If you feel hungry, you need to march your way back to the Tikona Upahargruha, which is situated in Tikona Peth. Minimum Duration for Tikona Fort: 2 to 3 hours are sufficient enough to explore the entire Tikona Fort unless you want to spend some more time at relaxation or photography.

You can plan your visit to the Tikona Fort anytime between 05:00 am to 05:00 pm. This point is known both for sunrise and sunset. It is therefore advisable to start your trek early in the morning and start your return journey by 04:30 pm.

You won’t find any restaurants or food stalls in and around the Tikona Fort’s trekking route. To enjoy your meal, you need to head in the direction of Tikona Upahar Gruha, where you will find some excellent and heavy food to satiate your appetite. Tikona Upahargruha is a small restaurant located in the village of Tikona. You will get an Indian style meal here.

How to reach Tikona fort?

There are no public transports to provide a direct connection between the Tikona Fort and the other main cities in India. By train: To get to the fort, you need to board a train that will lead you to the Pune Railway Station. From Pune Railway Station, Tikona Fort is situated at a distance of 60 km.  By Road:  Tikona Fort is located at a distance of 60 km and 130 km from Pune and Mumbai, respectively. You can easily find buses or rental cabs both from Mumbai and Pune to drop you to the Tikona Fort.  By Air: If you are planning to fly here, you need to take a flight to New Pune International Airport. From there, you will have ample of options to travel to Tikona Fort.

Tikona Fort Trek

Tikona fort trek is located in the Maval region in Pune, Maharashtra. It is known for it’s pyramidal shape which can be seen from the camping grounds in Pawna. The fort stands tall at 3500 ft. The name Tikona means “triangular”.

Not much is known about who build this fort. A vihara can be found on the fort which estimates the fort to be in existence since the 7-8th century A.D.

In 1585, Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I conquered the fort and annexed it to the Nizam territory. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj won over the forts of Lohagad, Karnala, Mahuli, Songad, Visapur and Tala in 1657. He successfully conquered the Nizam territory of Konkan and bought it under his rule.

The fort was crucial in for the control of the Pawna-Maval region because of it’s location. Security for the fort was provided by the Deshmukhs from the Maval region. It remained under them for a very log time since 1660.

The local villages and the forts held steady against a tirade of attacks from Jaysingh in 1665. Tikona fort eventually fell into the Mughal when Kubadkhan attacked the region along with Halal Khan and allies. This is documented in the Treaty of Purandar signed on June 1665.

The fort was recaptured by the Marathas from Kubad Khan. Akbar, Aurangzeb’s son was offered a stay on Tikona fort when King Sambhaji met Aurangzeb in 1682. However he preffered Jaitapur due to climatic conditions. The fort eventually fell to the British after a battled between them and the Maratha army in 1818.

A lot of the ramparts of the fort collapsed during the monsoon season in 1980. Tikona Fort trek and the Mandvi hills are separated by the Maval and the Paud valley. To the north of the fort is Maval valley and to the south is Paud valley. The fort is easily visible from the Mumbai-Pune expressway.

Tikona fort is called so because of it’s triangular shape. Two of it’s three prongs allow you to reach the fort. These entrances are enclosed with gates and bastions, while the third prong is fortified by digging a trench at a small height protected by cannons and rifles. It’s very difficult to enter the fort from this trail.

There are two entrances to the fort are located to the east and the north of the fort. To reach the fort, one has to go through Gevhande and Tikona Peth. Whichever way you come, the fort is very easy to climb.

There is a temple of Chapetdan Maruti, it is a temple of Lord Hanuman. There are some ruins and a door known as Vetal darwaja. There is a small lake in front of the temple. The temple is of Lord Tuljadevi Mandir. A sign board besides the temple reads out the fort’s map and history.

There are remains of an animal pulled stone grinder on the way to the fort. The trail continues ascending until it reaches the final rock cut steps which are very steep. The steps lead you to a bastion. There is a cave besides this on the right side.

There is a Trymbakeshwar temple at the top of the fort. A huge water tank can also be seen here along with the remnants of the fort. The top of the Tikon fort offers astounding views of the Pawna-Maval region. Nearby forts like Tung, Lohagad and Visapur can be easily seen from the top along with the Pawna lake.

The trail starts from the hillock south of the parking area near Tikonapeth. The route is well marked and well paved. It is very safe and wide. The hillock is actually the part that separates the fort from the main mountain. It takes about an hour to reach the entrance gate of the fort. There are very steep and high, however a rope is tied on one side to aid in climbing. Tikona fort trek is an easy level trek and is recommended for beginners.

Another route from the Chor Darwaza of the fort is a thrilling route, however because of low visitors the route lies in neglect and is covered in vegetation.

How to reach

One can reach Tikona Peth from Pune or Mumbai if travelling by personal vehicle. If travelling by train, get down at Kamshet, which is two stops ahead of Lonavala. Take an ST (State Transport) bus / shared jeep to Kale colony from the Kamshet railway station.

Any bus bound for Paund or Morsay is convenient for reaching Tikona Peth from Kamshet. From Tikona Peth the fort can be trekked in about 45 minutes.

Routes : First you would have to head towards Lonavala and from Lonavala to Kamshet. Then from Kamshet the locals can guide you for the route to Gavhande Village which is also called as Tikona Peth. This is the base village for Tikona. From this point the actual trek begins.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:  Difficulty level is Easy. Takes 1 1/2 hours to reach to the top of the fort. The trek route is well marked and there's no need for taking a guide for the trek. During the weekends, the fort is usually crowded with trek enthusiasts. Some parts are almost vertical as the fort is triangular in shape. So be extra careful at these patches.

Ideal Time for Tikona Trek:  During the winter season as the temperatures are low and the weather is almost perfect. If you are visiting in the rainy season, ensure that you be careful on the steep patches as they get a bit slippery.

Camping Info:  Not ideal for camping, but incase you plan for camping, there is a cave which you can use as sheter during night time. Carry plenty of water and firewood.

Tikona fort trek is one of the perfect one-day trekking getaways in the Maval region of Lonavala. Its easy reach by road and short trekking distance makes its a perfect weekends trek for family with kids and trekking enthusiastic. Moreover the difficulty level required for this trek is easy. And so Tikona fort trek is also a preferred trek to start with for a novice or first time trekker. Tikona fort has got its unique name for it is situated on top of a triangular shaped mountain. The fort now, though very little is left from the original Fort, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Pavna dam region.

Our trek started off with an easy climbing up a patchy trail right after the parking area . after just 15 minutes the patchy trail opened up to lush green scenery. The scene of the scenic lush greenery, cloudy weather and a drizzle was a refreshing experience during the early hours. The trail up was simply a piece of cake and was eye soothing. We reached a  huge wooden door( Vetal darwaja) , which reminded of a huge door of a fort. After that the trail levelled and few distance up we reached  the huge idol of Lord hanuman named as Chapetdan Maruti . We bowed  before the Lord and took few minutes of a small break.

The trail thereafter took us through the ancient cave temple called Lord Tuljadevi Mandir. There is a small lake in front of the temple which when framed with the temple provides a picture perfect frame. There is a small board from where you can read the history of the fort history. There is also a remnant of a stone grinder, which would have been pulled around by animals for grinding  wheat or rice.  From then begins the final steep step ascent to the top. These steps tooks us to Bale-Killa or the stronghold of the fort.  There at the top is a old temple called Tryambakeshwarat with a small water tank just behind it. Exploring the sides of the water tank we settle down for breakfast   that we took with us. From the top of the fort, we could see the not far away Fort Tung (On another side of Pavna Dam) and at a distance was the sight of Lohagad, Visapur, Jambhuli hill.  

Things To Keep in Mind

• Since Tikona is near to the major IT hubs i.e Pune and Mumbai, the weekends are when there is too much of rush. So if you are planning to go on a trek to the Tikona fort with a group or with  family with kids, do plan to reach the base village early. This will give to ample time to dodge the weekend rush and also enjoy some good time away from the hustle bustle of the city.
• The whole return trek can be done under 5 hours which also makes it the most easiest and the shortest trekking destination in the Sahayadri region of the Western ghats. But being it a short trek doesn’t make it less attractive or challenging. During the monsoons the path get slushed and with loose gravel it may make some esp. kids to take extra precautions while climbing up the rock cut stairs just before you reach the fort.
• The rock cut stairs have a very steep incline and demands extra precautions while holding on to the sides.
• Take ample  drinking water with you 2-3L per person.
• While planning to visit it during monsoon do take extra waterproof baggages and a sturdy raincoat. It rains heavily during those time of the year.
• For group with kids, keep extra  clothes in a dry bag and encourage them to wear trekking shoes.
• Mobile connectivity is superb in the top of the Tikona fort.

Best Time To Do Tikona fort Trek

You can also visit it anytime of the year, but best time to do Tikona fort trek is during the Monsoon season. 

Things To Carry To Tikona Fort Trek:

• 2-3 liters of water per person
• Some dry foods or snacks 
• A sturdy raincoat.
• Energizers drink like Glucon-D.
• Few old newspapers
• And of a Camera/Mobile phone with a full charge.

By Car :  Tikona is 51 kms from Pune and 120Kms from Mumbai . The road are very well maintained and is well marked for all to reach hassle-free, to theTikona fort trek starting point.

By Train : You Will have to alight at Kamshet station, which is two stops after  Lonavala railway station. Then you can take a ST (State Transport) bus / shared jeep to reach the Kale colony from the Kamshet railway station. It is here from where you will trek the Tikona fort.

Tikona Fort – A Day’s Trek

A whole new facet of mountains and greenery… and I’m left to nurture that wild lust for travelling…

Western Ghats… its beauty lies in all its eye-soothing and soul-healing freshness . I just can’t take my eyes off it, especially when it gets soaked in the abundant rains. It’s fascinating; it makes me breathless with all its expanse…

And atop one such hill lies Tikona, another remnant of Shivaji Maharaja’s conquests. The fort is in Maval district, near Lonavla, Maharashtra . The vast backwaters of Pavana dam can be seen in the distance.

We started the walk from the base of the hill, walking along the ridge that led to Tikona on one hand, and its extension led to Tung fort on the other end. Post monsoon Western Ghats has its own charm, and that I recall over and over again…

The first gateway towards the fort seemed somewhat like a cave from the outside, covered all over with grass, moss and shrubs – almost camouflaged with the rest of the green vicinity. After crossing that small cave, we soon arrived at another gateway – this time strong stone steps leading the way with two stone-built pillars on each side, followed by Tulja Devi’s temple.

Finally, the fort could be seen looming in the distance, once we arrived at a small stretch of green meadow.

The last lap towards the fort was literally breath taking. The steps were high, wet and slippery. There was a sturdy rope to fall back on, while walking upstairs.

And soon we arrived at the end of the flight of stairs. The wet, cold, stony black arch greeted us with a somber demeanor – the thickly-grown moss covering every nook, corner and creek.

Atop the hill, there was a small courtyard sort of an area, which was surrounded by walls. And just beyond the walls, lay a whole stretch of green valleys and mountains….

There was a small Shiva temple on the extreme top of the hill. With the environment serene, the vicinity vast and green, the fort calm, I felt really small in its midst. We were greeted by different colourful insects and butterflies,who made our day, never to forget the damn mosquitoes, who tried to make the day a bit miserable for us. We descended after a while. Time seemed to fly past as we reached the base, and eventually headed back to Pune .

After crossing that small cave, we soon arrived at another gateway – this time strong stone steps leading the way with two stone-built pillars on each side, followed by Tulja Devi’s temple.

Shiva Temple

Atop the hill, there was a small courtyard sort of an area, which was surrounded by walls. And just beyond the walls, lay a whole stretch of green valleys and mountains…. There was a small Shiva temple on the extreme top of the hill.

Time seemed to fly past as we reached the base, and eventually headed back to Pune.

The fort gets its name from its shape. Tikona means triangle in Hindi. It is a triangular-shaped enclosure of walls covered with moss but stands strong even today. It stands tall at approximately 3500 feet from sea level.

This historical treasure, embellished with Maratha influences, serves as a living testament to the lively history of Konkan’s Pawana Mawal region.

Tikona Fort is a sought-after trekking haven for adventure lovers, offering mesmerising vistas of Pawna Lake and neighbouring forts like Tung, Lohagad, and Visapur.

During the monsoon season, Tikona Hill transforms into a lush green haven, completely obscuring the brown land beneath the vibrant grass.

The trek from Tikona-Peth, the base village, spans around 2 hours, leading to the hill's summit where the fort stands. The journey begins in a dense forest, gradually opening up to vast landscapes with each ascending step.

You can enjoy food like Masala corn at the trek’s onset and at various points.

Along the trail, you will encounter wooden gateways adorned with metal spikes, evoking a distinct historical ambience. It creates the sensation of passing through the fort gates, similar to the experience of people from that bygone era.

There is also an ages-old limestone crusher on the way. Before reaching the fort's main gate, you come across a unique, orange-coloured idol of Veer Maruti or Lord Hanuman engraved in stone.

There is also an old Trimbakeshwar Mahadev temple and a deep moat or lake brimming with crystal-clear water on the way. You will also find Satvahana caves along the way that belonged to the Satvahana dynasty built during the late 2nd century BCE. To give you an idea of the area of these caves, they can easily accommodate 18-20 individuals at a time.

After crossing the Mahadev temple, the trail turns into stone steps. After just 100 steps, you will find yourself atop the hill to Tikona Fort, from where you can witness mesmerising panoramic views of the entire Pawana Mawal region - the Pawana Lake, other forts like Tung, Lohagad, and Visapur.

Upon reaching the fort, you will be surrounded by weathered moss-covered walls, resilient despite their age. You are welcomed by a huge gate made of black stone.

The expansive open area at the top of the plateau boasts numerous viewpoints, offering panoramic views. The summit also has several artificial lakes or cisterns, one of which is notably vast in size.

History of Tikona Fort, Lonavala

The fort has passed through several dynasties and rulers since it was built.

Although not much is known about the fort, it was attacked and annexed by Ahmed Nizam Shah I of the Nizam Shah Dynasty in 1585.

Several years later, in 1657, Shivaji I, in an attempt to bring the entire Konkan region together as one, attacked and took the fort from Nizam Shah along with the Tung, Lohagad, Mahuli, and Visapur forts.

Under Shivaji’s rule, the fort was the apex location to keep an eye on the entire Pawana Mawal region along with its trade routes and spot any enemies or unfavourable activities.

The fort's safety and custody were given to the Deshmukhs of the Dhamale Family in 1660.

The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb tried attacking Purandar Fort in 1665 but failed to capture it. He again ordered an attack, this time with a new commander, Jai Singh (ruler of the Kachwaha Dynasty), along with 12000 men, and the Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj had no choice but to surrender 23 of his 36 forts of the Mawal region to the Mughals as part of the Treaty of Purandar. Tikona Fort was one of the 23 forts to be surrendered.

However, the fort was taken back by the Marathas later and again lost to the British in a small fight in 1818.

The fortification is built on a plateau and has three corners which are useful for keeping an eye in all directions.

The walls of the fort are made of large stone blocks. The same stone is also used to construct the steps leading to the fortification.

It is a fine example of Maratha craftsmanship.

The huge cisterns or lakes on the top of the plateau commend the engineering of the Maratha architects, as these lakes were strategically used for protection from enemies and for collecting and storing clean drinking water.

Fortunately, Tikona Fort does not have an entry fee, making it an accessible destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

There isn’t any specific timings to visit the fort. You can visit any time of the day you want. But, it is advised not to start the trek once noon begins, as it will take you around 5-6 hours to ascend, stay at the summit for a while, and descend.

#Trivia: Do not stay on the fort too late, as it can be risky to descend the trail after daylight reduces.

Catch a bus to Tikona Peth (the base village) from Kamshet station.

By road : A road trip from Pune (46 km) and Mumbai (100 km) to Kamshet will take around 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes respectively. Kamshet is well connected to both cities by road.

By Air : The nearest airport is Pune International Airport. After landing, opt for a train journey or a scenic road trip to Lonavala, as mentioned above.

Take a break from your usual routine and plan a trek to the beautiful Tikona Fort (also known as Vitandgad), situated close to Kamshet, which is at a distance of 60 km from Pune in Maharashtra. A lot of people from near and far visit the Maval region of Lonavala to experience the Tikona Fort Trek. Also popular as ‘Triangle Fort’ due to its triangular shape, it is located at an elevation of 3500 feet above sea level. This fort has witnessed the stories of many dynasties of the Maratha region. Feel welcomed as you climb hundred steep stone-cut steps to the huge gates and explore the interesting entrance door, Satavahana caves, Trimbakeshwar Mahadev Temple, and tiny lakes and water tanks within. A lot of people trek to Tikona Fort to witness the surrounding marvels, which include the beautiful view of Pawna Lake from the top. This lake is known for its scenic beauty and tranquillity surrounded by lush green mountains. A lot of people from the neighbouring areas visit this lake to enjoy a day’s outing. The Pawna Dam is the major source of water for people from the nearby areas.

Apart from the Pawna Lake, you can also capture views of the surrounding forts, namely, Lohagad, Tung (twin fort of Tikona Fort), and Visapur from the Tikona Fort. Tung Fort, also known as Kathingad Fort, is oval shaped and has sharp conical peaks. This fort is also famous for trekking. It was built by the Adilshahi dynasty, which was later captured by Shivaji Maharaj. This fort is quite smaller and was built as a watch tower.

Not much is known about the history of Tikona Fort. In the 16 th century, Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I of the Nizam Shahi dynasty conquered this fort. Later, in the 17 th century, Maharaj Shivaji ruled over the entire Konkan region and conquered the Tikona Fort along with many other forts in the region. This fort was the primary point for the whole of Pawana Maval region, until the Mughal warriors invaded it, which was re-captured by the Marathas. You can see a Vihara (Buddhist Temple or monastery) on the fort dateable to approximately seventh or eighth century AD.  

Across the fort are the beautiful Sahyadri Mountains, accessible by a ridge. Beauty and adventure go hand-in-hand at this majestic fort. You might feel that some areas are almost vertical due to the triangular shape of the fort. Surrounded by lakes, valleys, and mountains, Tikona Fort is a perfect destination to enjoy the gust of oxygen and feel rejuvenated.

A lot of visitors prefer to visit this fort during winter season. Rainy season is also a good time to capture the beauty of the magnificent surroundings, however the path can get quite slippery.

About Tikona

Tikona fort trek is located in the Maval region in Pune, Maharashtra. It is known for it’s pyramidal shape which can be seen from the camping grounds in Pawna. The fort stands tall at 3500 ft. The name Tikona means “triangular”.

Tikona also known as Vitandgad is the hill fort in Maval in western India. It is located near Kamshet around 60 km from Pune. Behind the fort of Lohgad and Visapur, this fort is not visible directly. On reaching Borghat, there are caves on the top of the carla, palace, bedssey, bhandara and Shelarwadi. The forts for the protection of these caves are Lohgad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona. Many Ghatvata connecting the ancient Bandarana Ghatmatha are in this area and hence these squares have been built to keep an eye on them. Generally, the forts in this area are Buddhist and Hinayana practices, so these forts should be built between 800 and 1000 AD.

DALLAS (AP) — The first model of the USS Enterprise — used in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series — has boldly gone back home, returning to creator Gene Roddenberry’s son decades after it went missing.

The model’s disappearance sometime in the 1970s had become the subject of lore, so it caused a stir when it popped up on eBay last fall. The sellers quickly took it down, and then contacted Dallas-based Heritage Auctions to authenticate it. Last weekend, the auction house facilitated the model’s return.

Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, said he’s thrilled to have the model that had graced the desk of his father, who died in 1991 at age 70.

“This is not going home to adorn my shelves,” Roddenberry said. “This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.”

Heritage’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said the auction house was contacted by people who said they’d discovered it a storage unit, and when it was brought into their Beverly Hills office, he and a colleague “instantly knew that it was the real thing.”

They reached out to Roddenberry, who said he appreciates that everyone involved agreed returning the model was the right thing to do. He wouldn’t go into details on the agreement reached but said “I felt it important to reward that and show appreciation for that.”

Maddalena said the model vanished in the 1970s after Gene Roddenberry loaned it to makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979.

“No one knew what happened to it,” Rod Roddenberry said.

The 3-foot (0.91-meter) model of the USS Enterprise was used in the show’s original pilot episode as well as the opening credits of the resulting TV series, and was the prototype for the 11-foot (3-meter) version featured in the series’ episodes. The larger model is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The original “Star Trek” television series, which aired in the late 1960s, kicked off an ever-expanding multiverse of cultural phenomena, with TV and movie spinoffs and conventions where a fanbase of zealous and devoted Trekkies can’t get enough of memorabilia.

This USS Enterprise model would easily sell for more than $1 million at auction, but really “it’s priceless,” Maddalena said.

“It could sell for any amount and I wouldn’t be surprised because of what it is,” he said. “It is truly a cultural icon.”

Roddenberry, who was just a young boy when the model went missing, said he has spotty memories of it, “almost a deja vu.” He said it wasn’t something he’d thought much about until people began contacting him after it appeared on eBay.

“I don’t think I really, fully comprehended at first that this was the first Enterprise ever created,” he said.

He said he has no idea if there was something nefarious behind the disappearance all those decades ago or if it was just mistakenly lost, but it would be interesting to find out more about what happened.

“This piece is incredibly important and it has its own story and this would be a great piece of the story,” Roddenberry said.

Thankfully, he said, the discovery has cleared up one rumor: That it was destroyed because as a young boy, he’d thrown it into a pool.

“Finally I’m vindicated after all these years,” he said with a laugh.
