What Is The Hallstatt Ferry?

hallstatt lake cruise

One of the essential parts of Hallstatt is the ferry, which takes people across the lake from the train station to town and back.

The Hallstatt train station sits across the lake from Hallstatt, so without the ferry, it would be challenging to take the train into Hallstatt.

You can also take the ferry back to the train station right before a train arrives, any time of day. The ferry leaves town before every train, so you can be assured you will arrive at the station with plenty of time to spare.

How Often Is The Hallstatt Ferry?

The Hallstatt ferry runs in line with the train schedules.

So, whenever a train arrives or leaves the Hallstatt train station, a ferry takes people to and from the city center.

When you get off the train in Hallstatt, head down the path towards the water, and the next ferry should be leaving soon after.

And, if you are leaving Hallstatt on the train, you can catch the ferry in town that will get you back to the station before the train.

The schedule for the Hallstatt ferry is very strict, as they don’t want anyone to miss the train, so make sure you show up to the dock in advance so you don’t miss the boat to the train station.

Where Do You Catch The Ferry To Hallstatt?

inside the boat - a few benches and lifesavers

Catching the ferry to Hallstatt is easy when you arrive by train. You will catch the Hallstatt ferry at the train station just down the path to the left of the station.

Then, when you are ready to head back to the train station, you will catch the ferry in the same spot you got off the boat from the station.

The Hallstatt ferry pickup spot from the town is next to the Evangelische Pfarrkirche Hallstatt , aka the Lutheran church.

Here is the official name and address of the ferry dock in town:

ATO Hallstatt Market Boat Stationa

4830 Hallstatt, Austria

If you need help finding the ferry, ask any locals to help; they will point you in the right direction.

How To Get From Hallstatt Station To Hallstatt?

a photo of me, a mid-20s female, on the boat with the mountains and lake in the background

To get from Hallstatt station to Hallstatt, you must take the ferry across the lake. The ferry runs on a schedule adjacent to the train schedule, so whenever the train arrives in Hallstatt, the ferry to town will leave the station soon.

How Much Is The Hallstatt Ferry?

Now that you know how easy it is to take the ferry in Hallstatt, you may be wondering how much the ferry ticket from Hallstatt is.

When you arrive in Hallstatt, you can choose to pay for a one-way or roundtrip ticket for the ferry. If you take the ferry back to the train station, you can save time and buy the two-ride ticket.

You will buy the ticket when you board the ferry and must pay in CASH. I found that many places in Hallstatt only take cash, including my hotel , so make sure you hit an ATM before arriving in town.

A roundtrip ticket on the Hallstatt Ferry costs around seven Euros per person. The price is subject to increase at any time, so make sure you bring a little extra.

You can also pay in USD and Pounds, but you will pay a little more for the ticket, and no change will be given.

Enjoy Hallstatt!

a sign reading "ship to hallstatt, willkommen, welcome"

The Hallstatt ferry is easy to take, as it runs along with the train schedule. Just make sure you bring cash for the ticket.

Taking the train into Hallstatt is easy from anywhere in Austria, and I hope you fall in love with the town just like I did!

NAVIA

Hallstatt ahoy!

Boating back to yesteryear..

Take an extraordinary ride on Lake Hallstatt with NAVIA, and turn back time. In a Zille, sister to those that transported the “white gold” from Hallstatt’s Salzberg, or Salt Mountain, into the wider world 500 years ago.

In a Zille, Known Locally as Fuhr *) !

The Zille is a historical boat type with a flat bottom. However, a Zille of the form typical for this area of Austria, the Salzkammergut, is called a Plätte or a Fuhr (“Fua”). Fuhren were working boats that once plied the waters of Lake Hallstatt and the River Traun. NAVIA will allow you to experience the unique appeal of this bygone era in a novel, wonderful way on board one of our hand-crafted, faithful reproductions of a historical Fuhre.

Come Aboard!

NAVIA invites you to enjoy Lake Hallstatt’s unparalleled scenery and special charm aboard one of our Zillen, which are accurate reproductions of the historical boats. Either on a circular cruise, the regularly scheduled service, or one of the theme rides. Whichever option you choose, your ride will give you the opportunity to see and feel the lake, the mountains and Hallstatt from a very special perspective.

Forward – to the Past!

Our fleet currently consists of four Zillen, each 12 metres long and 1.8 metres wide. A boatman with a steady hand will accompany you on your ride. Along the way, he will relate stories from the history of the region around the lake. And tell you just about everything you want to know about Hallstatt, the lake and the Zillen.

*) The “Fuhr” on Lake Hallstatt is a UNESCO CULTURAL HERITAGE

Hallstatt shipping and boat rental

hallstatt lake cruise

There are lots of ways to get across Lake Hallstatt: take things into your own hands (or feet) with a rowboat or paddle boat, zip across in an electric motor boat or take your time aboard a somewhat larger ship.

The most romantic way to cross Lake Hallstatt

Shipping on lake hallstatt.

Hallstatt’s shipping operator’s tour ships are more than just transport vessels for crossing Lake Hallstatt. They’re also places for learning about the region. On the crossing, you’ll find out interesting things about Lake Hallstatt and the nearby towns. Depending on what else you have planned, you can choose between a brief crossing between Obertraun and Hallstatt or a slightly longer outing (around two hours) between Bad Goisern and Hallstatt. The latter tour is great for combining with a hike or bicycle tour along the eastern shore trail.

Navia shipping offers a particularly traditional way to take to the water on Lake Hallstatt: you can take a ride across the picturesque lake in a 12-metre Zille, a type of barge that the locals were already using 500 years ago. On the crossing, the Zille’s pilot will regale you with exciting stories from the region’s past.

A tip for romantics: You can take a Zille tour on Lake Hallstatt during sunset (including picnic and wine) and in the early morning.

See Hallstatt Traditional package

Boat tours and renting boats in Hallstatt

As noted above, you can also take to the waters of Lake Hallstatt on your own. A variety of boats are available, from paddle and rowboats to electric motor boats. You can rent boats from the following boat rentals:

  • Hemetsberger boat rental in Hallstatt: rowboats, paddle boats, electric motor boats
  • Schwarzmayr boat rental in Hallstatt: rowboats, paddle boats, electric motor boats and other water sports equipment, e.g. stand up paddleboards

Speaking of  stand up paddleboards (SUP)  – have you tried this new trend sport yet? Basically, the idea is to paddle along while standing on a floating board. It takes good sense of balance, perhaps a little courage and – often underestimated – some stamina, too.

After your trip by boat, ship or stand up paddleboard, Lake Hallstatt’s average temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius from May till September make taking a dip a pure pleasure!

Does hallstatt lake freeze, villages around hallstatt lake, train ride with views of hallstatt lake, is it worth to go to hallstatt lake.

The main reasons for going on holiday to Lake Hallstatt are the following: the idyllic clear lake in the Salzkammergut region , where the clarity of the water and the depth of 125 meters attract diving fans, and the town of Hallstatt with its old salt mines , which are among the most photogenic and accessible the most photographed Austrian lakes and the most pleasant places in the whole of Austria, then the Bad Goisern spa, literally destined to spend a quality holiday, another reason could be the cable car trip to the Krippenstein mountain with a height difference of 1,500 m, maybe even the nearby Bad Ischl spa, a favorite place of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

You can reach Hallstatt lake by bus 150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, where you switch to train to Steeg-Gosau or better to Obertraun. In Obertraun you either walk around lake to Hallstatt village to take a boat crossing the lake.

If you are coming by car to lake Hallstatt area, you can travel to Bad Goisern, Gosau, Hallstatt or Obertraun: see the map

The area is widely known from history classes. Local archaeological findings in the area are dated back to the Neolithic, around 5000-3800 BC. The first salt mine was in operation at least since the Celtic culture of Hallstatt, centered in the mining town of Hallstatt, whose name it bears.

Mining continued under the Romans and later under the rule of the Bavarian dukes. In 1180, the area fell to the Austrian Babenberg family, and so in 1252, thanks to the marriage of the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II. with the heiress Markéta Babenberská, it became part of the Přemysl possessions until the Battle of the Moravian Field in 1278.

Today, the Salzkammergut area is mainly a tourist and spa area, and has been for more than a century. Emperor Francis Joseph I spent his holidays in the nearby Bad Ischl spa, from where he ran his empire in the warmer months of the year. Here, too, in 1914, he signed the declaration of war on Serbia, which started the First World War. The salt mines then became the domain of the Habsburgs until 1918.

How Big and deep is Hallstatt Lake?

The lake, which stretches from south to north, has a length of 7.5 km and a maximum width of 1.4 km. The area is about 8.55 km², the average depth is 65 m. The volume of water is 558.1 million cubic meters. Lake Hallstatt is cut into the Dachstein mountains like fjords. The river Traun, a right-bank tributary of the Danube, flows through the lake. The area of the lake is approximately 13.5 km². It is 5.9 km long and 2.3 km wide. Its maximum depth is 125 m. The volume of water is 1.69 km³. It lies at an altitude of 508 m.

Its surroundings are a popular destination for thousands of tourists, and the water itself attracts mainly diving fans. It is not as deep, wide, and famous as Lochness, but its surroundings are very carefully adapted to the tourism. It makes Hallstatt Lake an ideal spot for outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing and boating.

If you’re planning a trip to Hallstatt Lake, you might be wondering if it’s possible to swim in the lake. The answer is  yes – swimming in Hallstatt Lake is allowed and encouraged, but there are a few things you should know before taking a dip.

In addition to the town of Hallstatt, the villages of Obertraun and Bad Goisern (Untersee) are located right next to the lake, which is fed by mountain water. In all three places it is possible to go into the water from the swimming pool or the bathing island. All facilities are for free and in Obertraun and Untersee there are also children’s playgrounds, kiosks and changing rooms. The island in Hallstatt can be reached by footbridge. It is located about max 10 minute walk from the center and offers a large lawn and a small kids playground.

But beware, the water reaches a maximum temperature of 23 degrees even in the middle of summer.

On the road between Obertraun and Hallstatt, near the so called Landbettler, a separate area is reserved forbathing of dogs, with a dog toilet and, of course, a public toilet.

What is the temperature in the Lake?

The water temperature in Lake Hallstatt can range from 16-23C (61-77F) during the summer months, making it comfortable enough to take a dip. However, it’s important to note that water temperature can drop to a chilly 8C (46F) during winter months, so it’s best to check temperature before swimming.

Can you fish in Hallstatt?

There is also an extensive fishing area on Lake Halstatt as well. Fishing regulations allow fishing techniques called spinning and fly fishing with a limit of a maximum of 3 salmon-like fish (including 2 whitefish) and 5 eel rods per day.

What fish are in lake Hallstatt?

You can find all different fish in lake Hallstatt, like Coregonus (whitefish), brown trout, Salmo trutta fario (river trout), Thymallus (fresh water fish), char, grayling, burbot, pike, perch, rainbow trout.

Do you need a license to fish in Austria?

If you have a license, you can get a fishing license directly at the filling station in Hallstatt. Others can get more information from the tourist office, there as well. The license issue can be resolved here (in following companies): Monika Wallner gas station in Hallstatt. Fishing Struger (Bad Goisern). Fishing tackle Sams (Bad Ischl).

Can you bike and hike around Lake Hallstatt?

Hiking and cycling options are also very popular on the east bank. You can go (set off) from Bad Goisern to Obertraun in two hours. The path runs directly along the lake and has no slopes.

The bike trail is largely identical to the hiking trail. Going around Lake Halstatt is a “must” for many mountain bikers on vacation in the Salt Chamber. No wonder, because the eastern shore of the fjord-like mountain lake invites you to “rest”. Here and there benches and shady places for a short stop. Just great!

kolo

The fjord-like lake landscape, shaped by the glacial ice of the Ice Age, is impressive. About 10,000 years ago, the lake acquired its current form with a maximum width of 2.1 km and a maximum length of 8.2 kilometers. Between the lake shore and the railway, a gravel road leads through meadows, past individual houses, up and down, even in the forest.

You can get to Hallstatt by car, but you have to explore the beautiful corners on foot. No cars pass through the narrow streets. Even for renovations and supplies, residents cannot go to houses that seem to have grown out of a fairy tales. So much has to be transported on foot, just like in earlier times of the history.

In addition to the site itself, you can drive the entire west bank by car. The east bank is wilder and closer to nature. If you want to discover the east bank, you can only do so by hiking or cycling.

Tip for extremely sporty visitors: On the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt, the famous 345-kilometer Salzkammergut cycle path leads north to Bad Ischl, which the total elevation gain is 1,850 meters.

The activities offered by the Lake Hallstatt area are as follows: hiking , cycling and high-altitude tourism, secured routes (klettersteigs), mountain climbing; swimming in the lake, water sports, paragliding, caves, salt mines , boat trips on the lake , boat rentals , bike rentals , 18 holes golf course, tennis, fishing, Nordic walking, kayaks, canyoning, rafting. And many more.

The ascent or exit by cable car to the Krippenstein mountain with a height difference of 1,500 meters from Obertraun at Lake Hallstatt is very attractive. There ia a possibility to visit 2 giant caves (Ice and Mammoth ), or the 5 Fingers lookout or the vast plateau at an altitude of 2,100 meters, which is worth a trip for many beautiful mountain hikes lovers.

Dachstein Ice Cave World in Obertraun

Hallstatt, Obertraun and Bad Goisern are the three places on Lake Hallstatt. They are dominated by the more than 2000 meter high mountains around. Between them lies a crystal clear mountain lake like a fjord. At this lake in the Salt Chamber you will also find one of the most photographed places in Austria – the motif shows the historic Hallstatt with the lake and mountains.

Due to the strong current of the river Traun, the water temperature is relatively low and rarely reaches more than 20 °C even in the summer. The river Traun also ensures that the lake rarely freezes completely in winter, usually only the northern area has a closed ice cover.

In the summer months, don’t hesitate to swim in lake, you will find a number of larger and smaller beaches along the shores. You can enjoy a beautiful view of Hallstatt during a trip on a steamer on the lake, or you can rent a boat or paddle boat yourself. The rental office is in Hallstatt and in Obertraun.

Want a tip for a great and less touristy place with awesome views? On the other side of lake from Hallstatt village, there is Obertraun beach/Strandband Obertraun . Beautiful place. Definitely worth a visit if a hot summer day hits you on your way past. Access to the water is gradual.

All three places are popular holiday destinations with activities such as skiing and snowboarding in the winter and mountain biking, swimming and kayaking in the summer.

The most beautiful route to the Dachstein Salzkammergut region is the Salzkammergut Railway . The villages of Bad Goisern, Hallstatt and Obertraun are directly connected to the Salzkammergut railway and have their own railway station. In Hallstatt, it is located on the upper side of the lake. The Salzbergbahn cable car takes you comfortably to the Hallstatt Valley.

The panoramic elevator and bridge continue to the restaurant and observation deck. The free-floating Skywalk is located 360 meters above Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a unique view of the historic city center, the lake and the Dachstein Salzkammergut region. Walking time approximately one hour. Good physical condition is required!

The "Fuhr" on Lake Hallstatt Traditional craftsmanship in Upper Austria, inscribed 2020

The wooden, flat-bottomed boats called "Fuhren" have a long history on Lake Hallstatt as a means of transporting goods and people. As early as the 13th century, following the reopening of the salt mine in Hallstatt, shipping on the lake and on the Traun River became necessary in order to transport the salt. Today, only very few people still have a mastery of this type of navigation.

Shipping on lakes and rivers was a necessity for the saline business in Hallstatt and for the transport of salt. The special wooden freight boats had to be built in such a way that they could be navigated downriver as well as back to Hallstatt loaded with goods. This specific kind of use for both lake and river transport required a particular construction: a sturdy, elongated structure with shallow draught, and propelled and steered with a long oar. The special construction and the distinctive appearance of the Fuhren come from the arrangement and number of the boat’s ribs, called Kipfen . The greater the number of ribs, the larger the Fuhr is, and the greater the water displacement. The preferred building material is locally grown wood, meaning spruce, fir, and sometimes also larch. The boat-building is done according to oral tradition or freehand sketches, and still largely by hand. The structure of a Fuhre consists of the bottom, side walls, various numbers of ribs, the Kranzling (the upward-curving bow), Steuerstock (part of the stern), Kehrweri (a raised board onto which the oar is fastened for rowing standing up), and Ochsenziem (a loop that acts as an oarlock). The traditional art of rowing the Fuhre requires great skill and years of training.

As the original purpose of the Fuhre— as a means of transportation on the Traun River—is increasingly served by other means, the building of new Fuhren has greatly diminished, although these boats continue to play an important role on Lake Hallstatt and in the surrounding communities. They serve as a traditional and unique means of transport for sacred and secular festivities, for example as a part of the Corpus Christi lake procession.

Because only three people still have a mastery of this type of traditional boat-building, the independent training programme “Wooden Boatbuilding” has been established at the Hallstatt Technical School, with the collaboration of the three masters. This curriculum is aimed at passing on knowledge about the new construction and restoration of Fuhren in the context of formal education as well.

Austria by Rail

hallstatt lake cruise

By train to holiday pleasure

The most beautiful route to the Dachstein Salzkammergut region is by rail with the “Salkammergutbahn”. The towns of Bad Goisern, Hallstatt and Obertraun are directly connected to the “Salzkammergutbahn” railway and have their own stations. In  Hallstatt it is located on the opposite side of the lake. A ferry commutes almost every hour and takes you to the town centre.

Gosau with train and bus

Gosau itself has no train station in the village. Here, the train stop is located in the Steeg district of Bad Goisern. Hence, the station bears the name Steeg-Gosau. If you want to go to Gosau by train, you must alight the train here and change onto the post bus. This stops directly in front of the station and takes you – without changing - in approximately 15 minutes to the centre of Gosau.

Video Arrival to Hallstatt by train
