Beyoncé adds extra dates for long-awaited Renaissance World Tour: See show schedule
"Please do not be alarmed, remain calm. Do not attempt to leave the dance floor."
Beyoncé announced her long-awaited tour for her seventh studio album " Renaissance " on Wednesday to kick off Black History Month . Demand for tickets skyrocketed so fast, the artist added second show dates seven cities: Toronto; Chicago; Washington D.C.; Atlanta; Houston; Inglewood, Calif. and East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The album, which debuted in July, is an ode to Black queer culture. Disco anthems, soulful ballads and sexy lyrics are packaged together in "Renaissance."

Beyoncé returned to the stage for first time in four years in January
Last month, Beyoncé made her return to the stage and performed at the opening of the Atlantis The Royal hotel in Dubai. Despite the luxury experience, the singer left fans wanting more, as she did not perform any songs from "Renaissance," The Hollywood Reporter reported.
The invitation-only event marked her first concert in more than four years. She last performed at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event in 2018.
Beyoncé dominates Grammy nominations
The singer's tour announcement comes days ahead of the Grammys where Beyoncé leads the 2023 lineup with nine nominations, including best dance/electronic album ("Renaissance"), best R&B performance ("Virgo’s Groove") and best traditional R&B performance ("Plastic Off the Sofa").
With 28 wins and 88 total career nominations, Beyoncé now ties her husband, rapper Jay-Z , for the most nominations in Grammy history. If Beyoncé picks up four or more awards this year, she will surpass the late Georg Solti for the most Grammy wins of all time. (The Hungarian-born conductor holds the record with 31.)

Beyoncé called out by Monica Lewinsky: over 'Partition' lyric after ableism controversy
Beyoncé and Jay-Z have got "to be the most intense power couple in the history of music," Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. Mason said after the nominations were revealed. "That’s music and Grammy royalty – that’s the royal family."
Their combined 176 nominations are "absolutely a testament to their talent, to their level of excellence, to their work ethic, to their level of greatness over a long period of time. I don’t even know what the next (leading) couple would be, but it’s not anywhere close.”
Beyoncé's 'Break My Soul.' Taylor Swift's 'Anti-Hero.' These are the 10 best songs of 2022, ranked.
Beyoncé noticeably was not nominated in any of the music video categories for the Grammys, having not released any album visuals for "Renaissance" since its debut.

Where can you get tickets?
Tickets for the North American leg of the tour will be available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program. Tickets will go on sale Monday, Feb 6, with an exclusive presale to BeyHive members, according to a Live Nation press release.
Verified Fan registration is now open. Once you register, you'll be placed in a lottery system that determines which fans get invited to purchase tickets. Registration alone doesn't guarantee tickets. If you're selected, you'll get an access code the day before tickets go on sale. Everyone else will be placed on a waitlist. According to Live Nation, this process is intended to help Ticketmaster weed out the resellers and verify your account so that actual fans get priority to buy tickets.
Citi cardmembers will have a special Citi Presale after the Verified Fan process. Get more details here . Verizon will also offer an exclusive presale through their customer loyalty program Verizon Up .
Will Beyoncé be using Ticketmaster like Taylor Swift to sell tickets?
Yes, but given what happened with Taylor Swift's Eras tour (and the fact it led to Congressional hearings about Ticketmaster ’s practices), it seems very likely both Beyoncé and Ticketmaster would want to avoid repeating that mess. That most likely explains the usage of the Verified Fan system.
Where will Beyoncé be playing?
The Renaissance World Tour will hit 40 cities in North America and across Europe. Stops include Paris, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, and many more.
What has Beyoncé said about the Renaissance World Tour?
She just announced it was happening with a post on February 1. Her website didn't immediately contain any more details. But during the Wearable Art Gala in October 2022, she appeared to confirm it would start this summer, as a backstage tour with her mother Tina Lawson was up for auction at the event.
Will Beyoncé be performing at the Grammys (on February 5) and sharing more tour details there?
Not clear yet, but she is the most nominated artist at the ceremony . On January 21, Variety reported that “ talks with show producers are ongoing for a possible onstage appearance ” by Beyoncé.
What can we expect from the tour on stage?
Beyoncé hasn't shared that yet either, but given the artistry she put into her recent Dubai show , it's fair to say we can expect no less than excellence, elaborate costumes, and an incredible experience.
This post will be updated the moment more detail is released.

Following the release of her seventh album, Renaissance , in July, fans have been itching for a tour announcement, in addition to music videos to accompany the songs. Beyoncé’s last solo tour was the Formation World Tour back in 2016 to support her sixth album, Lemonade . Following that, she went on the On The Run Tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018 after releasing their joint project, Everything Is Love . The announcement of a new tour just before the Grammy Awards on Sunday raises suspicion that Beyoncé might be performing or, at the very least, attending the night’s festivities.
The singer is nominated for nine Grammys at this year’s awards ceremony, which are set to take place on Feb. 5 in Los Angeles. This year, she is up against Adele for multiple awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. There has been speculation about whether or not Beyoncé would be performing ever since the nominations were announced. The last time fans saw her perform on a major televised stage was at last year’s Oscars ceremony, where she performed “Be Alive” from the King Richard movie for the first time.
Read More: 6 Takeaways from Beyoncé’s New Album Renaissance
Beyoncé most recently took the stage for a private concert at the opening of the Atlantis The Royal resort in Dubai in January. However, she did not perform any songs from Renaissance . Also, given that Beyoncé unveiled the album’s title on Instagram as “act [one],” her dedicated fanbase has been busy theorizing what acts two and three might be. Some have hypothesized that the tour would be act two and then a concert movie would be act three. Others have ventured to guess that this is a three-part album and that Renaissance was just the beginning.
Tickets for the concert will not be an easy get if Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is any indication. Beyoncé’s fans can click on the date they would like to attend to register for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program and will then have to wait to see if they are given an access code to purchase tickets to the event. With Verified Fan and the “unexpected” traffic the pre-sale brought to the site, many Swifties likened the ticket-buying process to a warzone. The disastrous rollout drew ire from Swift’s fans and political officials alike. After the ticketing fiasco, the Senate held a hearing to look into whether Live Nation and Ticketmaster have a monopoly over the ticketing industry. This, coupled with the technical problems that Swift fans faced, have Beyoncé fans worrying that finding their way to an actual concert will be nothing short of an ordeal.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour
By Evan Minsker and Allison Hussey
Beyoncé has announced that she’s touring in support of her latest album, Renaissance . The tour begins with a European leg in May, followed by dates in Canada and the United States that extend from from early July through late September. It’s her first tour since her 2018 co-headlining On the Run II Tour with Jay-Z behind their collaborative album, Everything Is Love , and her first headlining tour since 2016’s Formation World Tour behind Lemonade . The Renaissance World Tour is produced by Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation. See all of the dates below.
Renaissance arrived July 29, rising swiftly to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and marking Beyoncé’s seventh album to summit the albums chart. It is the first act in what will be a three-part series, she has indicated.
Beyoncé hinted at her world tour in late October, during the fifth annual Wearable Art Gala, where the raffle included “ a UNIQUE experience ” to see her on the Renaissance tour. Purported images from the auction featured descriptions of the summer 2023 trek. Valued at $20,000, the package included first-class plane tickets, a three-night hotel stay, two concert tickets, and a guided backstage tour from Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles aka Miss Tina. Beyoncé was reportedly in attendance at the gala. In January, she performed at the opening of a new luxury resort in Dubai, but did not play any Renaissance material at the private concert . It was her first live performance since 2020.
Since sharing Renaissance , Beyoncé has made a few adjustments to the album; she replaced ableist lyrics in “ Heated ,” and removed an interpolation of Kelis ’ “Milkshake” on “Energy” after Kelis said she was not informed by Beyoncé and her team that her music was going to be used on the new album. Beyoncé also dropped Honey Dijon and Madonna remixes of “ Break My Soul .”
In 2019, Beyoncé released Homecoming: The Live Album . The next year, she shared Black Is King , a visual album based on her 2019 soundtrack for The Lion King: The Gift . (Beyoncé voiced adult Nala in the CGI remake film.) On Juneteenth of that year, she surprise-released “ Black Parade ,” which would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance . At the same ceremony, she also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song (for her feature on the remix of Megan Thee Stallion ’s “ Savage ”), as well as Best Music Video (for The Gift ’s “ Brown Skin Girl ”). “ Be Alive ”—her contribution to the King Richard soundtrack—was nominated for an Oscar at last year’s ceremony.
Beyoncé is nominated for nine honors at the 2023 Grammy Awards : Record of the Year , Song of the Year , and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Break My Soul”; Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance ; Best R&B Performance for “Virgo’s Groove”; Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa”; Best R&B Song for “Cuff It”; and Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Be Alive.”

Beyoncé announces Renaissance World Tour

Please don’t be alarmed and try to remain calm — nearly six years since her last solo trek, Beyoncé is back and (hopefully) heading to a city near you before wrapping her tour this fall. The superstar announced her massive Renaissance world tour back in February, marking Beyoncé’s first global solo tour in support of her seventh album of the same name. With the tour winding down, there’s only a few weeks left to score Beyoncé tickets . Get Beyoncé Tickets on Vivid Seats
With the final month of the Renaissance tour approaching, Beyoncé shared a statement on Instagram that “Virgo Season is upon us.” She continued: “This tour has been such a joy and as we approach the last month, my birthday wish is to celebrate with you wearing your most fabulous silver fashions to the shows 8.23 – 9.22! We’ll surround ourselves in a shimmering human disco ball each night. Everybody mirroring each other’s joy. Virgo Season together in the house of chrome. See you there! Your B at RWT.”
Ticket registration and sales for Beyoncé’s tour were previously split into three different groups, and now Beyoncé tickets are on sale for all remaining dates, including on Ticketmaster and Vivid Seats .

Renaissance World Tour 2023 North America Dates
Wondering if Beyoncé is playing a show in your area? Below are the remaining cities the Grammy winner will visit for the 2023 North American leg of the Renaissance tour . Beyoncé previously also added an additional three shows to the tour, including Atlanta (8/14/23), Las Vegas, (8/27/23), and Inglewood, CA (9/4/23).
Not surprisingly, Ticketmaster said it saw a massive demand for the Renaissance tour in a blog on its website. “Fan demand already exceeds the number of tickets available by more than 800% based on the registration numbers in the Group A cities. It is expected that many interested fans may not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply.”

While we won’t give too much away about the Renaissance tour set list (though you’ve likely seen much of it on TikTok), you can hear more about the show in Rolling Stone Music Now ‘s podcast episode . It’s a deep-dive into what fans can expect during the concert. In short, you can likely plan to hear everything from deep cuts like opener “Dangerously in Love,” along with Renaissance tracks like “Alien Superstar,” “Cuff It,” and closer “Summer Renaissance.” Plus: “Love on Top,” “Crazy in Love,” “1+1,” and more.
When Are Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour Tickets On Sale?
According to Ticketmaster at the time, “Beyoncé is distributing tickets in three different Verified Fan sales: BeyHive Presale powered by Ticketmaster Verified Fan; Citi Presale powered by Verified Fan and the General Verified Fan Onsale. Additionally, there will be a Verizon Up Presale. Registration windows vary by city, so check the schedule below and be sure to note when the window closes for the show you’re interested in attending.”
In other words, if you tried to register for Verified Fan presale, you needed to see which group your city was a part of ahead of time. Group A registration was open until Feb. 2, with Group B registration previously scheduled until Feb. 9, and Group C until Feb. 16.

European dates started in May, and Beyoncé embarked on the North American leg of the Renaissance tour over the summer, including stops in Toronto (read our Renaissance tour review ), Los Angeles, Houston, and New Orleans. Though Beyoncé headlined a show in Dubai — her first concert in four years at the time — she didn’t play any songs from Renaissance , Rolling Stone ‘s No. 1 album of 2022 (“the musical highlight of the year”) and a frontrunner at the 65th Grammys .
When Beyoncé dropped Renaissance last summer, Rolling Stone ‘s Mankaprr Conteh wrote that “Beyoncé flung open the doors to a nightclub of her own making, a place where anyone can be the hottest person in the galaxy … the album traverses eras of dance music to conjure the superhuman confidence and deeply human connection of a night out. The thematic triumph of the auteur’s seventh album is this union of the extraordinary and the earthly across it, a duality that lives on the dancefloors Renaissance was inspired by — and in all of us.”
How to Get Beyoncé Tickets With BeyHive Verified Fan Registration
BeyHive Verified Fan Presale started Feb. 6 for those who registered in Group A, followed by Groups B and C.
The first round of the BeyHive presale arrived just one day after Beyoncé made Grammys history on Feb. 5. With 32 wins under her belt, Beyoncé broke the record for the most Grammy Awards in music history, winning the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Renaissance .
“I’d like to thank my beautiful husband, my beautiful three children who are at home watching,” Queen Bey said during her acceptance speech. “I’d like to thank the queer community, for your love, and for inventing this genre. God bless you. Thank you so much to the Grammys.”
While Renaissance didn’t win a trophy for Album of the Year , Beyoncé still took home a slew of other awards, including Best R&B Song for “Cuff It,” Best Dance/Electronic Record for “Break My Soul,” and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa.”
“You changed my life,” Lizzo told Beyoncé during her Grammys acceptance speech for her Record of the Year win. “You sang that gospel medley, and the way you made me feel, I was like, ‘I want to make people feel this way with my music.’ So thank you so much. You clearly are the artist of our lives.”

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour 2023 with Stops in 25 U.S. Cities
The "Crazy in Love" singer confirmed the hugely anticipated stadium tour on Instagram Wednesday morning
Beyoncé is back, baby!
The singer, who is up for nine Grammys this Sunday , revealed her Renaissance World Tour 2023 on Wednesday morning in an Instagram post — coincidentally, (or perhaps, very strategically!) six years to the day she announced her surprise pregnancy with twins .
The highly anticipated tour — produced by Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation — is set to kick off in Europe on May 10 at Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden before touring overseas in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Sunderland, Paris, London, Marseille, Amsterdam, Warsaw and more.
A North American leg of the tour begins on July 8 in Toronto, Canada before hitting 25 U.S. cities including Philadelphia, Nashville, Louisville, Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, East Rutherford, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, St. Louis, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Inglewood, Vancouver, Seattle, Kansas City, Dallas, and Houston.
The tour is currently scheduled to wrap on Sept. 27 in New Orleans.
For complete ticket information, visit tour.beyonce.com .
Beyonce's last tour was 2018's On the Run tour which hit 48 cities in North America and Europe. Beyoncé last performed a full concert back in 2018, when she and JAY-Z, 53, appeared at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event .
The tour announcement comes just over one week after Queen Bey performed her first full concert in more than four years, when she performed an hour-long set at the new Atlantis The Royal Resort in Dubai.
For more on Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour announcement, listen below to our daily podcast PEOPLE Every Day.
Moving through a decade of iconic hits, Beyoncé, 41, performed staples such as "Crazy in Love," "Beautiful Liar" and "Naughty Girl," as well as more recent tunes including "Freedom," "Spirit" and "Be Alive."
The singer wore a set of dazzling looks during the performance, including a yellow custom-made Atelier Zuhra corseted dress, which was topped with a feathered skirt and matching backpiece, when she opened the show performing a cover of Etta James ' "At Last."
Then, the mother of three changed into another custom gown, an all-red Nicolas Jebran ensemble composed of a skin-tight bodysuit that was decorated with gold jewels across her torso and chest. She accessorized the look with a matching, billowing skirt and an intricate headpiece.
Notably missing from Beyoncé's set was any song from Renaissance .
Renaissance , which has been billed as the first of a three-part project , marks Beyoncé's first solo album in six years.
She previously released Dangerously in Love (2003), B'Day (2006), I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008), 4 (2011), Beyoncé (2013) and Lemonade (2016), following her tenure with Destiny's Child . Beyoncé also appeared on the 2018 collaborative album Everything Is Love with husband JAY-Z , as well as 2019's The Lion King: The Gift , a soundtrack for Disney's live-action adaptation that features original music by the artist.

A visual album for Renaissance has been previously teased , but no release date for it yet has been announced.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour
The star’s first solo tour since 2016 will start May 10 in Stockholm.
- Share full article
By Joe Coscarelli
For the first time since 2016 — a world before Beychella , Covid-19 and “Renaissance” — Beyoncé will headline a solo tour, the singer announced in a social media post on Wednesday.
Beginning on May 10 in Stockholm, and continuing in Europe through June before coming to North America, the Renaissance World Tour, in support of her seventh solo album, will run for at least 40 dates, largely in stadiums, according to dates posted to Beyoncé’s website . The tour includes one night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 29) and one at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Sept. 2) amid stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami.
Limited tickets for certain tour dates will go on sale beginning Monday for members of Beyoncé’s BeyHive fan club, followed by the staggered release of additional tickets by market, using a complex registration system for various tiers of buyer.
The tour, produced by Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation, will use Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system , which aims to limit bots and professional scalpers, marking one of the first major tests for Ticketmaster since extraordinary demand for early tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour last year led to fan backlash and regulatory scrutiny . At a Senate Judiciary hearing last month spurred by the botched presale, artists, fans and politicians cast Live Nation Entertainment, the concert industry giant that owns Ticketmaster, as a monopoly that hinders competition and harms consumers.
Beyoncé’s shows will be the singer’s first live events available to the public since the On the Run II tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018, tied to the surprise release of a joint album, “Everything Is Love,” by the duo billed as the Carters. Beyoncé last toured alone behind her previous solo album, “Lemonade,” in 2016. Two years later, she headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
That show — which went on to be released as “Homecoming” (2019), a live album and concert film — was called “rich with history, potently political and visually grand” in a review by the New York Times critic Jon Caramanica. “By turns uproarious, rowdy, and lush. A gobsmacking marvel of choreography and musical direction.”
In the years since, Beyoncé has surfaced intermittently, including with songs like “Black Parade,” which won a Grammy Award for best R&B performance, and “Be Alive,” which appeared in the movie “King Richard” and was nominated for an Oscar. Last year, in a taped performance, Beyoncé performed the song at the 94th annual Academy Awards.
But the singer made a return to the pop mainstream in earnest with the July 2022 release of “Renaissance,” a dance-floor-oriented album that she said was inspired by the L.G.B.T.Q. community and has spawned hits like “Break My Soul” and “Cuff It.” At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Beyoncé is nominated nine times , with a chance to become the most-awarded artist in history.
Upon its release, the singer called “Renaissance” part of a “three act project” that she recorded during the pandemic. “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment,” she wrote of the album, which was billed as Act I. “A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom.”
Major music touring has largely recovered, especially at its highest levels, since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the industry trade publication Pollstar , touring grossed a record-setting $6.28 billion last year, up more than 13 percent from 2019, due in part to pent-up fan demand, inflation and major acts like Bad Bunny, Elton John and Harry Styles.
In addition to Beyoncé’s shows, this year will see blockbuster tours from artists including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Metallica, Morgan Wallen and Madonna.
Last month, Beyoncé proved more polarizing than usual when she headlined the grand opening of a luxury hotel in Dubai, performing for an invite-only collection of guests, including influencers and journalists.
While some fans decried the optics of taking a major payday in a place that criminalizes homosexuality — “Beyoncé’s Dubai performance isn’t just an affront to LGBTQ+ fans, but workers’ rights in the UAE,” The Guardian declared — others noted that the singer’s set list did not yet include songs from “Renaissance.”
An earlier version of this article misstated the year Beyoncé headlined Coachella. It was 2018, not 2016.

After Beyoncé got the BeyHive — and every other Bey-adjacent fan — buzzing with her “Renaissance” tour announcement, concert promoter Live Nation on Thursday said the artist has extended her tour but that “demand drastically exceeds supply.”
Beyoncé on Wednesday announced her forthcoming “Renaissance” world tour and posted the concert dates on her website . The singer will travel across Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States — including threestops in California.
On Aug. 30, the “Break My Soul” hitmaker will play Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, followed by Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The tour will kick off May 10 in Stockholm and conclude Sept. 27 in New Orleans.
Grammys, you have one job on Sunday: Give Beyoncé album of the year
She’s among the most honored artists in Grammy history, but has never won album of the year. Racism? Sexism? Rockism? On Sunday, the Grammys are out of excuses.
Feb. 2, 2023
On Thursday, Live Nation announced the first extension to the tour “due to huge demand” and added seven stops in North America, including the second SoFi show. The Grammy winner will also play additional shows in Toronto; Chicago; East Rutherford, N.J.; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta and her hometown of Houston.
Fans can register for Ticketmaster’s “Renaissance” tour sale via Beyoncé’s website by signing up for any of three registration groups with different deadlines and different cities — perhaps an attempt to streamline the ticket-buying process and prevent another Eras tour fiasco . Buyers are permitted to sign up for multiple registration groups.
The California dates are split between two groups: The deadline to register for Inglewood is Thursday at 8:59 p.m. Pacific time, while the deadline to register for Santa Clara is Feb. 9 at 8:59 p.m. Pacific time. Live Nation said Thursday that verified fan registration for the new dates closes Friday noon Eastern time (9 a.m. Pacific).
“Fan demand already exceeds the number of available tickets by more than 800% based on current registration numbers in the Group A cities,” Live Nation said Thursday. “To help meet demand for this first group of dates going on sale, seven shows have now been added based on venue and scheduling availabilities around the time of the tour. Even with these added dates, it is still expected that the majority of interested fans will not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply.”
Additionally, members of Beyoncé’s official fan club are eligible to sign up for Ticketmaster’s BeyHive presale via the same registration groups and deadlines. More details and instructions are available on the Live Nation website .
6 takeaways from Beyoncé’s head-spinning, body-moving ‘Renaissance’
A leak threatened to disrupt her meticulously plotted rollout, but no matter: ‘Renaissance’ is as musically (and sexually) provocative as any album in 2022.

For non-BeyHive members, two other presale opportunities also exist: Anyone with a Citi credit card can access the Citi presale by entering their credit card number; and any Verizon customers with Verizon Up can apply for the company’s exclusive presale for select U.S. shows through its customer loyalty program.
Rumors of a Renaissance tour have been circulating since October, when two tickets to see Beyoncé perform “live from anywhere around the world” were auctioned off at her mother and stepfather’s Wearable Art Gala in L.A. The tickets reportedly sold for $150,000.
This marks Queen Bey’s first time hitting the road since she and husband Jay-Z co-headlined their On the Run II tour in 2018. Her first concert since then was last month at luxury hotel Atlantis the Royal in Dubai. The private show was part of a three-day event celebrating the opening of the resort on Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah island.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour was announced at auction where Blue Ivy stole the show
Concert tickets to Beyoncé’s forthcoming Renaissance tour were auctioned off at her mother and stepfather’s Wearable Art Gala on Saturday.
Oct. 24, 2022
Beyoncé unveiled her Renaissance tour dates several months after releasing her seventh studio album of the same name . In November, music from the critically acclaimed record received eight Grammy nominations, including a nod for album of the year. When the Recording Academy released this year’s nominations, Beyoncé and Jay-Z became the most nominated artists of all time with a total of 88 nods apiece.
“Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world,” Beyoncé wrote on Instagram in June.
“It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.”

Beyoncé: Renaissance World Tour review – a dizzying three-hour spectacular
Friends Arena, Stockholm Queen Bey’s first solo headline tour in seven years is a lavish leap forward for live entertainment, dripping with sci-fi disco decadence, sex and Black pride
E ven without Taylor Swift’s Ticketmaster-melting Eras Tour nipping at her heels, it wouldn’t do for a star as compulsively ambitious as Beyoncé to merely protect her status as the greatest pop show on Earth. Not when her first solo headline tour since 2016 could instead push 21st-century live entertainment another lavish leap forward.
Titled after the Texan’s disco glitter bomb post-pandemic party album of the same name , Renaissance is a monster blockbuster concert experience on a different plane. Fifty-seven stadium dates globally, starting in Stockholm, are projected to gross as much as £1.9bn ($2.4bn) by the time the tour ends in New Orleans late September. Dripping with sci-fi disco decadence, sex, body positivity and feminine Black pride, the near three-hour spectacular plays out in front, behind and, at times, inside a football-pitch-wide high-definition video screen designed to assault the senses at dizzying scale.
The BeyHive, as Beyoncé’s fans collectively style themselves, are buzzing pre-show as they flood into the venue from around the world for their first chance proper to see their queen live since 2018’s On the Run II co-headliner with Mr B, Jay-Z. Dressed head to toe in official tour merch, including a cap and hoodie both emblazoned with the word “THIQUE”, Mykwain Gainey has been to 20 Beyoncé shows over the past two decades and has spent nearly £2,000 to fly here from New York. “To see her transcend, and become what she has become, especially as a Black woman, is exciting,” he enthuses.
Brazilian Yhes Bezerra wears a spangly cowboy hat like the one sported by Beyoncé in the tour poster, except theirs is homemade; sticking on the thousands of tiny mirror panels took nine hours. They were determined to come to the opening night to avoid social media spoilers about what to expect. “I want everything to be a surprise,” Bezerra smiles.
Beyoncé appears first in a video cut scene, laid out luxuriously across the giant screen semi-naked in dimensions big enough to be visible from space. And yet, once she emerges in the flesh – all sequins, shoulder pads and that megawatt smile, drinking in the crowd’s screams – she begins disarmingly with a slew of her rawest soul songs. By the second, Flaws and All, she already appears to be fighting back tears, whether of release or gratitude or both. It’s an opening that seems designed to strip away artifice, if only to provide some sharp contrast for the heavily technologically augmented spectacle about to follow.
Harking back to early house and techno and the ecstatic utopia of the dancefloor, a segment dedicated to the Renaissance album ensues with Beyoncé done up something akin to the Maschinenmensch in Metropolis. She grinds with a dozen backing dancers to the jittery reggaeton of her boss bitch mission statement I’m That Girl, then dances with some actual robots (a pair of mechanical arms) during Cosy. Were all that not semi-hallucinogenic enough, Alien Superstar interpolates narcissistic anthem I’m Too Sexy by 90s dance-pop twosome Right Said Fred.
With many of the setlist’s whopping 36 songs abridged, the tempo is relentless. Blink and you’ll miss dancers popping out of the stage like champagne corks, or Beyoncé’s powerhouse band getting wheeled into occasional view on a tall stepped riser (shades of Beychella), such as during Chic-style feelgood funk workout Cuff It. “Y’all having a good time, Stockholm?” our host inquires, wiping an imperceptible bead of sweat from her brow. “Me too.”
Black Parade finds Beyoncé cruising the stage atop what looks like a kind of lunar rover. Somewhat comically, it exits up the gusset of a pair of massive splayed legs. Later she sings Plastic Off the Sofa stretched out in a clamshell. Come Crazy in Love, the show finally gets the enormous disco ball it seems to have long craved, dangled from the rafters for only a bit longer than the time it takes for the crew to get it up there and back down.
Bass-quaking, envelope-pushing Black power anthem Formation is a powerful political statement in any setting. Performed in a kind of virtual cathedral, horny southern rap and gospel cocktail Church Girl (sample lyric: “drop it like a thottie, drop it like a thottie”) might just be intended to provoke. But by Beyoncé’s own standards, it’s hard not to read Renaissance as a show much lighter on overt socio-political messaging than it is sheer, unfettered, mildly chaotic indulgence. And who could blame her?
In a final, unsubtle, retro-futuristic fanfare, Bey summons Bianca Jagger’s iconic Studio 54 moment by gliding through the air on a glitter-encrusted white horse while Summer Renaissance – which samples Donna Summer’s I Feel Love – blares. The disco history references may or may not be landing with the mostly young BeyHive, but that’s not really the point. By rewiring dance music past in a sensory overload of truly stunning ambition and stamina, Beyoncé is writing some history of her own.

Will Beyoncé announce the 'Cowboy Carter' tour? Fans think she may be hitting the road again soon
- Beyoncé released her new album "Cowboy Carter" on Friday.
- Some fans think she's gearing up to tour again, though many say they don't have the funds to attend.
- The Renaissance World Tour wrapped last October in Kansas City. It was hailed as a must-see event.
Less than a year after the Renaissance World Tour wrapped, it might already be time for the Beyhive to dust off their boots and head back out to see Beyoncé live again.
The Renaissance World Tour was hailed as a once-in-a-lifetime event , a bona fide status symbol , and a blockbuster concert movie that awed audiences while near-singlehandedly boosting AMC's revenue . The 56-show run wrapped on October 1, 2023, in Kansas City.
On its heels, Beyoncé has released her new album " Cowboy Carter ." The triumphant country-inspired project is billed as "Act II" in a three-part "Renaissance" series.
So it would stand to reason — financially and thematically — that Beyoncé would plan another tour leg for "Cowboy Carter."
Her team seemed to hint that something is coming by launching a new website, " Been Country ." The landing page shows a photo of young Beyoncé performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, as well as a childhood photo of her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson , and an image of a banjo.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Slayonce Avenue (@slayonce_avenue2)
A fan account on Instagram shared a rumor that the tour announcement is scheduled for Friday, exactly one week after the album's arrival. Knowles-Lawson liked the post, adding more fuel to the rumor's flame.
Beyoncé's longtime collaborator The-Dream, who produced 10 of the new album's 27 tracks, also alluded to a forthcoming tour. He celebrated the release of "Cowboy Carter" on X, writing, "This tour bout to B' Incredible!"

Fans grabbed screenshots of The-Dream's post, though it has since been deleted.

However, the six-month turnaround since Beyoncé's last concert does cast suspicion on these theories. Thanks to "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," we know the Renaissance World Tour took four years to ideate and execute.
It's unclear if plans for a "Cowboy Carter" show were also in the works during that time, but if not, fans may have to wait a bit longer to watch Beyoncé perform. As she's already made clear, " A queen moves at her own pace ."
Even so, a delay may come as welcome news, even for dedicated members of the Beyhive.
Many fans have been posting about their lack of ticket funds on X, playfully begging Beyoncé to put off touring until next year.

Beyoncé announces dates for 'Renaissance' world tour
Beyoncé is going on tour for the first time in about four years.
The singer announced dates for the 2023 "Renaissance" world tour on Wednesday. The tour will kick off in Stockholm, Sweden, on May 10. The first stop in the U.S. is on July 12 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Other cities include Nashville, Detroit, Tampa, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Kansas City.
Beyoncé drops new album 'Renaissance'
The music artist's seventh record was released in July.
Tickets are being sold in different groups by city. And you can register for the presale if you are a BeyHive member, a Citi card holder, a Verizon customer or a Verified Fan with Ticketmaster .
"Renaissance" is Beyoncé's latest album. Released on July 29, it went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
What's ahead for Ticketmaster, live music after Taylor Swift tour mess
Ticketmaster's handling of Taylor Swift's "Eras" tour could affect major tours going forward as lawsuits and fans push misconduct allegations.
Beyoncé returned to the stage last month, playing a show in Dubai for the opening of a resort. However, she reportedly did not perform any songs from "Renaissance."
Fans are hoping Beyoncé may give a preview of her upcoming tour at the Grammys later this month. She is nominated for nine awards.

Fatima Robinson Talks Beyoncé's Renaissance Tour, Crowns Her ‘The Michael Jackson of Our Time'
Beyoncé may be riding high off Cowboy Carter right now, but Renaissance is the gift that keeps on giving.
In a revelatory conversation with Ahmir Questlove Thompson on his Questlove Supreme podcast, renowned choreographer Fatima Robinson revealed how Beyoncé came up with stage design and concept for the Renaissance World Tour during the pandemic - and why the superstar shifted her approach to dance on her most recent trek.
"That was Beyoncé sitting in a pandemic with a lot of time on her hands and coming up with the most incredible, creative stage that I had ever gotten to work on," Robinson gushed of the Renaissance World Tour stage. The sold-out stadium tour featured two separate platforms connected by a moving ramp, a main stage complete with a sprawling flatscreen, a B stage that stretched into the crowd, and a slew of props including, a tank, pyrotechnics, a laser show, a giant clam shell, robot arms, a flying "disco horse" and various levitating platforms.
In Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé - the box office-topping documentary concert film chronicling the conception and execution of the tour - Queen Bey revealed that the tour was planned over four years, and three identical stages were developed for the show. The $580 million-grossing tour also featured 22 dancers, including her eldest daughter, Grammy winner Blue Ivy Carter .
"She has quite a few choreographers across her span of music," said Robinson. "We gave me the title ‘director of choreography' because I was the point person that all the choreographers worked under and with. It was such a big boulder to get up a hill, that show."
While Robinson has worked with Beyoncé in the past - most notably on 2006's Oscar-winning Dreamgirls and her "Be Alive" performance at the 2022 Oscars - she joined forces with several other choreographers for the Renaissance tour, including her two other team members, Chris Grant and four other choreographers who worked on numbers sporadically.
Her first solo concert tour since 2016's Formation World Tour , the Renaissance World Tour presented a notably different Beyoncé. While the three-hour show was still a feast for the eyes and ears, the performance included less intense choreography than her past tours - partially due to a knee injury she suffered before those 56 sold-out shows.
"We were having a lot of conversations around when is enough enough? " Robinson explained. "You have nothing to prove, Bey. You are our Michael Jackson of our time. We're like athletes, at a certain point, you have to just say "Okay, I'm gonna do it, but I'm gonna also take care of myself and be mindful of what my body is telling me right now."
Robinson's revelations echo sentiments Beyoncé herself shared in Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé . Throughout the documentary, Queen Bey mused about looking to her idols to inform how she moves in her career. The Renaissance tour was a celebration of that, from a surprise appearance from Diana Ross to a multi-city tribute to the late Tina Turner .
"Look at how Prince was when he passed away, he had those hip replacements because of all those splits and stuff," noted Robinson. "Look where Michael [Jackson] is. We want you around performing for years to come, so let's not put that kind of pressure. Let's ease into it, let's stand there and be powerful and step into a different kind of power, and guess what? They gon' come with you!"
That approach to performing also resulted in a very Beyoncé take on the concept of an opening act. For each show, Beyoncé began with a set of ballads , introduced by a beautiful piano-led rendition of 2003's seminal "Dangerously In Love 2."
"I turned to her and I was like, ‘This is really fly, starting with ballads,'" recounted Robinson. "She laughed and she said, "I'm opening up for myself!"
In addition to the Renaissance World Tour, Robinson also worked on 2023's The Color Purple movie musical, which topped the domestic box office on opening day and earned one Oscar nomination.

Stagecoach live updates: Set times, Jelly Roll, Willie Nelson and Beyonce rumors
The 2024 edition of Stagecoach is rolling into Indio enshrouded in a cloud of speculation over who might make a very special guest appearance at the Empire Polo Club over the weekend. Headliners Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Morgan Wallen, bolstered by an undercard of Jelly Roll, Willie Nelson and Post Malone, delivered an early sellout for the festival, but it's the speculation that Beyoncé will make an appearance hot on the heels of her "Cowboy Carter" album that has some predicting a very, very special year.
Check back here for the sights, sounds, special guests and magic moments of Stagecoach throughout the weekend.

Eric Church joins Morgan Wallen during headlining set Sunday
Eric Church might have just redeemed himself during Morgan Wallen’s Stagecoach setEric Church performed a polarizing headlining set Friday ― it was basically a nonstop, gospel-inspired jam session with a full choir backing him ― that upset a lot of fans that wanted to hear him play all the hits.Well, in what was a bit of a surprising move after all the hate he got on social media earlier this weekend, Church came out onstage during Morgan Wallen’s Sunday headlining set to sing their hit “Man Made a Bar.”Wearing the same black sunglasses he wore Friday, Church appeared totally cool and confident, and delivered the type of performance a lot of people would have liked to see from him Friday.

Morgan Wallen won't be on Stagecoach livestream
If you couldn’t get a pass for Stagecoach and planned to watch Morgan Wallen’s headlining set from the comforts of home on Sunday, there’s bad news. The “Last Night” singer’s set won’t be streaming on Amazon Prime tonight.
It’s not uncommon for an artist not to stream their performances such as licensing issues or perhaps an issue with the streaming platform, neither of which has been confirmed as of Sunday night. In 2023, Coachella headliner Frank Ocean’s disastrous Weekend 1 set wasn’t livestreamed on YouTube.
‒ Brian Blueskye
Hardy actually is the guy who came to raise hell at Stagecoach
For as long as I can remember at Stagecoach, it’s become a thing for Mane Stage performers to say: “I came to rock Stagecoach tonight” or “I came to burn Stagecoach down” after performing a couple of rockin’ country songs, but then things switch to mid-tempo songs or country ballads.
Hardy started out his set with a couple of heavy country songs and meant it when he said that he came to rock Stagecoach.
The country-rock musician has written songs for Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, Morgan Wallen and more, but has become prominent for his country-rock sound fused with metal.
There should be a rule for the Mane Stage: If a performer’s set isn’t going to be anything like Hardy’s, they didn’t come to “burn Stagecoach down,” “raise hell at Stagecoach” or “rock Stagecoach.”
Megan Moroney's Stagecoach set reminiscent of young Taylor Swift
Megan Moroney feels like the answer to the question: What would’ve happened if Taylor Swift continued making country music into her mid-20s?There was her glitter-covered guitar, which felt like something you’d expect to have seen Taylor strumming “Tim McGraw” on 17 years ago. There was the platform Moroney rode out and often played on, which was decorated with guitars and seemed designed to inject some pop-star glamour onto this country stage. And most undeniable of all, there was that distinctive curly blonde hair, a dead ringer for Swift’s “Fearless” era.But the similarities weren’t just physical, Moroney also proved to possess Swift’s same obsession with troublesome men and the many ways they’ve apparently wronged her.“I write songs and I have horrible taste in men,” Moroney said as she introduced herself. “It’s worked out pretty well so far, the worse the man the better the song.”Moroney then proceeded to take us a tour of her troubled love life that included popular songs like “Caller ID” and “Sleep on my Side” (which was rendered particularly memorable when the crowd sang along to the memorable lyric about how her former lover “sleeps with everyone”). She also played two unreleased tunes: “Man on the Moon” and “Indifferent” that also seemed on-theme.But Moroney, like Swift, ultimately seems to be a hopeless romantic and that side of her finally showed through as she sang her biggest hit “Tennessee Orange” (alas she was wearing a Carolina blue dress on this day) commencing a sing along to close the show.

Nate Smith channels Dave Grohl in inspirational Stagecoach set
Nate Smith joins Bailey Zimmerman, Elle King and McKenzie Carpenter on what seemed to be an unexpectedly long list of artists playing their second straight Stagecoach (Goldenvoice booking problems, perhaps?).
But the native Californian’s set provided a clear reminder of why the bookers were probably eager to have him back: he seems like one of the nicest guys in country music.
The singer got a longer set this year and he used some of it to fire up the crowd. After explaining that he worked for years as Certified Nurse Assistant (“where my CNAs at?” he yelled at one point) before being convinced by a friend to back to Nashville and give music another shot, Smith provided the most inspirational monologue of Stagecoach so far.
“Forget the songs, forget the music, forget all that, it’s never too late to chase your dreams and do what you really want to do in life,” he said, further explaining that he was down to his last $14 when he signed his record deal.
And sure enough, Smith seemed to be enjoying every moment on stage but none more than when he launched into a cover of The Foo Fighters “My Hero.” It initially seemed like an unexpected choice but one that started to make sense as Smith sounded and even kind of looked like a ringer for Dave Grohl and honestly brought the house down to similar effect.
With Smith continuing to gain popularity, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s invited back for a third Stagecoach set before too long. If they do, I think Smith has already found the perfect potential guest for his set.
Finding Mr. Right at Stagecoach: A love story
Many people come out of Stagecoach with a tan and some hazy memories. Tara Petrina and Bruce Alpern (eventually) came out of it with a spouse.
The couple had come to the 2013 edition of Stagecoach with separate groups but met in the campgrounds and took a liking to each other. Petrina jokes that her girlfriends were encouraging her to kiss him but she didn’t want to kiss someone at Stagecoach. One of the headliners that year? Miranda Lambert.
Luckily, this wasn’t the end of their story as they exchanged numbers and kept in touch. Things could’ve been derailed when Alpern, who is a fireman, had to cancel a plan to go a Fourth of July party at Alpern’s house because he was called in to work but they eventually went on a successful golf date and the rest was history.
They got married the next year and have been making the yearly trek to Stagecoach together every year since with a sign in tow celebrating the festival as the start of their relationship that has now become a fixture of the campground (this year they were camping just feet from where they met).
“To be honest, there’s more women than men at Stagecoach so I was never expecting to meet someone here,” she said. “But when you are not expecting it and you meet someone with the same interests and hobbies it’s like magic.”
Now, she has advice for other people who might think they’ve met their Mr. Right at Stagecoach.
“Play hard to get,” she joked. “It seems to have worked for me.”
Ashley Cooke gives Stagecoach audience originals, fun covers
Ashley Cooke gave fans of 2000s music everything they could’ve wanted during her Stagecoach set, performing brief covers of “Come Clean” by Hilary Duff, “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne and “Life is a Highway” by Tom Cochrane made popular by Rascal Flatts.
As an added bonus, she also performed “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” by Stevie Wonder.
Cooke’s career is currently on the rise — she recently won a CMT award and was nominated for an ACM award. She said herself during her performance on Sunday that it’s been a couple weeks of super highs for her career. It was her first Stagecoach, which she said was an honor.
She's also been climbing the charts recently thanks to her song “your place” and she certainly got the crowd singing along when she played it to close her short set. However, she also showed that she has much more to offer than a single radio hit as she capably played through a roster of her other songs off her album “shot in the dark” like “moving on with grace,” “i almost do,” and “it’s been a year.”
In a fun twist, Cooke changed the final chorus of “your place” to tell the crowd “Stagecoach sure the hell is your place.” But based on the potential she showed in this set, it seems like it could be poised to be a pretty good one for her, too.

Willie Jones 'duets' with Beyonce (just not in person)
Willie Jones, whose musical imprint started with being on the competition show "The X-Factor" back in 2012, has seen a recent explosion in popularity after being a collaborator with Beyoncé on her new album "Cowboy Carter." Jones played an early set in the hot sun Sunday at the Stagecoach country music festival. While the crowd was still filing in, his dedicated fans were there singing along while casual observers were watching to see if just by some miracle he brought out Queen Bey.
At one point he did say "Give it up for Beyoncé" as he began to sing their song "Just for Fun" which may have caused some heads to turn, but he was just giving it up for her talent and he sang the duet while her voice was piped in.
Jones didn't need help having a quick fun set. He started out wearing leather pants and a leather coat but after about a song and a half in the hot sun he jettisoned the jacket. He brought out Ben Burgess, who played his own Stagecoach set on Friday, for one song, and followed that up with an appearance by Randy Savvy of the Compton Cowboys.
Jones riffled deftly through his hits like "Back Porch," "Soul Food" and "Slow Cookin'." He dropped a new song, too, called "Silverado." With his smooth soulful voice and natural stage presence it was no Beyoncé, no problem for Jones.

Brittney Spencer talks Beyonce collaboration at Stagecoach set
Even though Beyoncé hasn’t appeared at Stagecoach as of Sunday, the plane carrying a “Cowboy Carter” banner continues to fly over the Empire Polo Club and two collaborators who appeared on the album performed at the festival during the early afternoon.
Brittney Spencer, who appeared on the track “Blackbiird” on "Cowboy Carter", played a country-soul set to a small crowd in the Palomino stage. The Baltimore native, who grew up singing in the choir of her African Methodist Episcopal Church, has spoken about her influences from Ray Charles to Beyoncé to Miranda Lambert and there was a blend of all of that in her voice and songs.
In the middle of her performance, she brought up her 2020 EP “Compassion,” singing with The Brothers Osborne at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2022, releasing her debut album “My Stupid Life” in January and appearing on “Cowboy Carter,” which she described as “one of the most iconic albums of our generation.”
“I feel like some of you have been with me on my journey for the last four years. Thank you so much, because you changed my life,” Spencer said.

Making lemonade at Stagecoach more than a side hustle
Jodi Wright has been making lemonade at Stagecoach for two years now. Her sister, Elsie Richards, has done it for a few years and got her interested in joining. Both women do this part time — Wright is a dietician and Richards is a CPA. She lives in between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, and works in the Bay Area, so she had to travel quite a distance to Indio.
She said there’s a mix of people working alongside her, with some just doing this part of the year and others who bounce from festival to festival.
“It’s so fun. Everybody’s really positive energy, fun vibes,” Wright said. “And you get to hear the musicians while working, so yeah I love it.”
She was most looking forward to seeing Morgan Wallen.
— Ani Gasparyan
Katie Pruitt gets political in Stagecoach set
Katie Pruitt said during her Stagecoach set that country music is protest music. She performed her touching song “Loving Her,” with poignant lyrics about loving a woman despite people’s prejudices.
“If loving her hurts I'll keep on hurtin'," she sang. "If it means staying true to who I am. You may not agree but like me you're learning. That people don't like what they don't understand.”
She also performed “Worst Case Scenario” and “White Lies, White Jesus and You,” asserting before the latter that if Jesus was around today he would be against injustices and support causes like women having their own bodily autonomy.
Pruitt ended on “Out Of The Blue” after doing a litmus test in which she asked the audience if they wanted a “slow sad-y” or “fast baddie.” She went with a sad song, saying she’d already made up her mind.
Miko Marks, with The Resurrectors, leaves crowd wanting more
Miko Marks showcased her powerful vocals during her performance at the Palomino stage on Sunday. She told the audience she thought she was done with music but came back after a 14-year hiatus and made an album with The Resurrectors, who joined her on stage for Stagecoach. The crowd was small due to Marks’ early set time, but they still enjoyed her music. They booed when she said she was about to perform her last song “Feel Like Going Home,” wanting more time with the singer.
Stagecoach Sunday weather forecast for Indio
So far it's been a mild but windy festival. Things are going to heat up on Sunday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio for the final day of Stagecoach, and the wind is still going to be a factor. From the National Weather Service:
Sunday: Sunny with a high near 90 degrees. Winds will be 5 to 10 mph with some gust as high as 20 mph.
Sunday night: Clear with a low around 64. Winds of 5 to 15 mph could gust as high as 30 mph.
Miranda Lambert brings out Reba McEntire for her Stagecoach 2024 headlining set
Miranda Lambert played a nice long set for fans Saturday night — it was the hit-filled kind of performance I think a lot of them expected, and most definitely did not get, from Friday headliner Eric Church.
It seemed like Lambert wasn't going to bring anyone out after she'd been singing for about an hour and 15 minutes, but to everyone's surprise, at one point she told the crowd "I thought I'd bring out a redhead from Oklahoma" and introduced Reba McEntire to the stage.
The pair sang Lambert's "Mama’s Broken Heart," then McEntire's "Fancy" before closing with Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead."

Brandi Cyrus gets the crowd going, plays her sister Miley Cyrus' song 'Hoedown Throwdown'
Brandi Cyrus had an exciting DJ set on Saturday, bringing out the singer Dasha to perform her popular song “Austin” and Miley Cyrus’ “Hoedown Throwdown.”
Cyrus actually played a number of her sister Miley’s songs, starting with “Party in the U.S.A.” She also played her father Billy Ray Cyrus’ feature on “Old Town Road” to the thrill of the crowd. Other songs included “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, “Murder on the Dancefloor” by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics, and “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes.
It was an eclectic and fun mix. The audience had grown small after The Chainsmokers played right before Cyrus, but it grew again as her set continued. Bringing out Dasha was a nice surprise, especially for anyone who missed it when she came out with Dillon Francis and Ship Wrek the day before.
Also the day before in the HonkyTonk, DJ trio Cheat Codes brought out rapper Yung Gravy and singer/social media star Dixie D'Amelio as special guests.
Leon Bridges brings out Carin Leon for impressive Stagecoach set
Nothing could compete with the absolute VIBE that was Leon Bridges singing his hits in the Palomino tent at Stagecoach Saturday, but the singer had one other major treat in store after singing "River" and "Beyond."
That was when Leon met León as the singer invited Regional Mexican musician Carín León — the Latin Grammy-winning artist who received the key to the City of Coachella last weekend — on stage to perform their popular duet “It Was Always You (“Siempre Fueste Tu”).

Post Malone brings out Brad Paisley and Sara Evans for his Stagecoach debut
Rapper/singer Post Malone isn't known as a country artist, but ever since he joined forces with Beyoncé for the song "Levii's Jeans" on her latest album, "Cowboy Carter," he's started to lean into another genre he loves.
That love for country was evident Saturday, especially when he brought out a slew of country's finest as special guests during his debut Stagecoach set. First, Dwight Yoakam joined him for "Little Ways," then Brad Paisely came out for his own song, "I'm Gonna Miss Her," and Vince Gill's "One More Last Chance." And finally, Sara Evans joined him for "Suds in the Bucket."

Willie Nelson brings out Jelly Roll, Ernest and Charley Crockett
Few people can still pull in big crowds quite like Willie Nelson, the legendary country artist who's been performing for more than six decades. Just two days before his 91st birthday, he decided to celebrate by making it a family affair at the Stagecoach country music festival.
Nelson and his family band, along with Waylon Payne, played a number of easy-listening and upbeat tunes for the Saturday crowd eager to see the nonagenarian. The legendary artist kicked off a streak of highly anticipated acts at the festival, later followed by Leon Bridges, Post Malone and headliner Miranda Lambert.
Kicking things off with songs such as "Whiskey River" and "Stay All Night (Stay a Little Longer)," Nelson got into the groove as if no time had passed since he penned those songs back in 1973 and 1978, respectively.

Ernest brings out Jelly Roll for redemptive set after mic issues during Jelly's Stagecoach set the night prior
Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, made his fourth major appearance so far at the festival when he popped onstage during good friend Ernest's set on the Mane Stage to perform their duet “I Went to College, I Went to Jail.”
As the name suggests, the darkly humorous tune traces the differing paths Ernest and Jelly Roll took to their current status as Nashville stars (Jelly Roll, if you didn’t know, was the one who went to jail).
And there was definitely something joyful and triumphant about the two singing it from one of the most high-profile stages in country music. The vibes were equally as good when Ernest came out during Jelly Roll's Mane Stage set the day prior to sing "Son of a Sinner" — but better, because Ernest didn't have any microphone issues this time.

Stagecoach dreams come true for Annie Bosko and Kylie Morgan
Annie Bosko
Annie Bosko made the most of her dream of performing at the Stagecoach country music festival on Saturday, giving the audience a delightful and energetic show.
She performed her own songs, like “Boots On,” “Neon Baby” and one she has coming out this year with Dwight Yoakam called “Heart Burn.” She also did covers like Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” during which she informed the crowd that she recently got second degree burns but had to perform at the festival anyway. Her love for Stagecoach and country music was apparent throughout the set, such as when she said “I’m from California, so this is a big deal.”
While she was on a small stage in the Toyota Music Den, she enamored the audience with her singing, dancing and jokes. She even jumped onto the dance floor for her last song, “Honky Tonk Highway.” It was the most fun performance at the festival I’ve seen so far.
Kylie Morgan
Kylie Morgan posted to her Instagram story on Saturday morning that she hadn’t been able to sleep after a packed show in Las Vegas, writing “I’ve (laid) here all night feeling like I did as a kid before the first day of school. Excited, nervous, & just so ready to go see what this new adventure brings.”
Dressed in sequins for her Mane Stage performance, she gave the audience an exciting show with fan favorites like “Bridesmaids,” “If He Wanted To He Would” and her newest release “Two Night Stands.” She’s clearly on the rise in the country music scene — “If He Wanted To He Would” has over 92 million streams on Spotify and Kelly Clarkson even performed it for her “Kellyoke.”
Tanner Adell shines sans Beyonce during her Stagecoach debut
Tanner Adell was the first to take the Mane Stage on Saturday, her set slightly delayed as once again the gates opened late. Some fans may have held onto the slight hope she’d bring out Beyoncé for the "Cowboy Carter" hit she's featured on, “Blackbiird,” but the iconic singer did not show (it’s still too early in the day to lose hope though).
Adell still set the tone for a fun day at the festival on her own, though. She performed songs off her debut album, “Buckle Bunny,” such as “FU-150,” “I Hate Texas,” and “See You in Church.” She also performed her single “Love You a Little Bit” and newest release “Whiskey Blues.” For her last song, “Buckle Bunny,” she brought out The Harbin Sisters to dance. The group had created a dance to the song that you can learn the steps to on TikTok.
Nickelback plays one of the most-attended Palomino sets in Stagecoach history
If I had a nickel for every late-night country music fan that was crammed in and around the Palomino tent to see Nickelback play at Stagecoach Friday night, I'd have ... let's see probably seemed like about 25,000 people so there's 20 nickels in a dollar, so that means ... anyway, it was a big crowd.
Perhaps buoyed by the mass exodus from Eric Church's unusual headlining set , Nickelback's late-night performance (a new tradition at Stagecoach where a non-country artist finishes the night, which will include Diplo on Saturday and Wiz Khalifa on Sunday this year) was the most crowded version since the idea's conception.
And Chad Kroeger and company didn't disappoint. They promised some sing-a-longs to their hits and some special guests and delivered on both.
Country music ball of energy Hardy joined them to sing his song "Sold Out" and the Jelly Roll, who had performed a well-received set on the Mane Stage earlier, joined the band to sing their hit "Rockstar."
Nickelback hit their biggies as well, including "Someday" and "Photograph," but the moment the crowd got into the most was with their hit "How You Remind Me." From silence, Kroeger belted out the opening refrain "Never made it as a wise man" and the crowd jumped right in with the rest singing the entire song including the chorus that ends "These five words in my head, scream 'Are We Havin' Fun Yet?'"
The answer was yes. Yes we were having fun.
Eric Church pulls the biggest surprise of the day by quite literally taking the Stagecoach crowd to church
Eric Church has a reputation for being one of country music's true rebels, with songs such as his quaking blue collar anthem "How 'Bout You" that asks "I like my country rocking, how 'bout you?" But that's not the same guy who showed up to Stagecoach as a headliner on Friday.
After a lengthy church organ song played as the intro, Church appeared seated on a stool in front of a stunning set of red stained glass windows on the production screen and began playing Leonard Cohen's "Halleluiah" before he was joined by backing vocalists for "Mistress Named Music," then a choir for "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "This Little Light Of Mine," "When The Saints Go Marching In," "I'll Fly Away," "I Saw The Light" and more.
The unplugged jam session sent festivalgoers for the exit of the Empire Polo Club starting about 15 minutes in, a sight that could be best described as Moses parting the red sea. It was a surprising move by Church considering his recent setlists appear to be in line with the type of show many were probably expecting him to perform during his third appearance at Stagecoach.
Jelly Roll brings out Maddie & Tae, ERNEST, T-Pain and, in a heartwarming move, his wife and daughter for his Stagecoach debut
Jelly Roll told fans at the beginning of his Friday night Stagecoach set that he'd be bringing out "lots of special guests," and boy, did the man deliver.
First, Jelly brought out good friend and fellow Stagecoach performer Ernest to sing "Son of a Sinner," but sadly, we could barely hear him as Ernest's mic didn't work for the majority of the song. Then, he brought out country duo Maddie & Tae to sing the unreleased song "Liar," adding that if everyone liked it "it might end up on the next album."
Finally, he brought out T-Pain, which we already knew was going to happen but didn't make it any less epic. Jelly let T-Pain play a medley of hits such as "Buy U a Drank" before delving into their cover of the late Toby Keith's "Should've Been A Cowboy."
Before the end of the set, Jelly brought out his wife, Bunnie XO, and daughter, Bailee Ann, and asked the crowd to sing "Happy Birthday" to soon-to-be 16-year-old daughter.
Carin Leon brings out Mexican singer Ana Barbara
Carín León, the Latin Grammy-winning artist who received the key to the City of Coachella last weekend, brought out a beloved special guest during his debut Stagecoach set Friday.
Mexican singer Ana Bárbara came out with the Regional Mexican singer to great applause.
Last-minute addition to the Stagecoach lineup Dasha caues huge line to get into the HonkyTonk
Horrifying sights to see at a music festival include, but are not limited to, mysterious substances on the floor, exorbitant prices for basic food, a wet toilet seat in a porta potty, and long and cramped lines for something you really want to see.
I was treated to the latter when I tried to enter Diplo’s Honkytonk to see Dillon Francis and Ship Wrek’s special guest Dasha. But after nearly an hour of waiting, people in line around me could only sing along to her popular song “Austin'' from outside.
It was an extremely dysfunctional process. People were in a line stretching past the Golden Road Brewing stand at one point. But as we neared the tent, it became a cramped crowd and I only heard staff briefly shout that the entrance was to the side of where people had headed. It didn’t get better from there — everyone remained cramped together, at times pushing to either get out or reach friends, until there was finally room to breathe once we reached the metal dividers meant to actually keep things organized.
It would definitely have been smarter to head over there super early, and I'd recommend people keep that in mind for "The Chainsmokers" and other popular sets in the HonkyTonk on Saturday. By the time I got inside, the only victory to be had was getting to feel the air conditioning.
Lana Del Rey surprises crowd during Paul Cauthen's Stagecoach set
Lana Del Rey, aka the woman who graced these very Empire Polo Club fields the past two Fridays as a Coachella headliner, was back this Friday at Stagecoach as a surprise guest.
According to several social media posts, Tyler, Texas native Paul Cauthen kicked off his weekend last night by singing with Del Rey at a Nikki Lane BBQ event, and then he invited her onstage during his late afternoon Friday set in the Palomino tent.
Cauthen was first known as a member of Americana/indie folk rock duo Sons of Fathers before going solo.
Lauren Watkins makes Stagecoach debut, sings unreleased song
Lauren Watkins performed twice during her debut at Stagecoach Friday, once at the Mane Stage and then again at the Bud Light Backyard. Her second set drew a large crowd, causing Watkins to jokingly ask if it's because there’s air conditioning. The enclosed stage was certainly a welcome respite from the heat and blowing dust outdoors, but the audience was also clearly enjoying Watkins’ music.
She sang songs like “Fine County Line,” “Stuck In My Ways,” “Anybody But You” and a new song being released in May called “Mama, I Made It.” Watkins spoke with the audience periodically, doing a cheers with a Bud Light and ending her set with a sentiment many Stagecoach fans would agree with, “God bless country music.”
Where's all the barbecue at Stagecoach?
A huge part of attending the Stagecoach country music festival over the years has been the comically vast array of barbecue options. Finding the best barbecue was almost as important as hearing your favorite band. A barbecue-stain on your shirt was almost a certainty by the end of the night.
In the early days of the event there were actual barbecue competitions during the weekend, and in recent years that has given way to big tents left over from Coachella with 12 to 15 different barbecue booths selling their wares.
This year? Nothing. It's weird and noticeable.
Guy Fieri has his cooking demonstrations, and you can find a stray barbecue item at the random food areas like some brisket in your mac and cheese, but there is no dedicated area overflowing with barbecue options this year. Bummer.
At least Indio-based sandwich spot TKB Bakery is back with a different menu from their Coachella offerings, leaning more into the barbecue world with their sandwich choices. Good job, TKB!

Meg McRee opens Stagecoach's Toyota Music Den with energetic set
Meg McRee gave a fun performance Friday afternoon at the Toyota Music Den, which doesn’t have the set-up of a usual festival stage. The stage is small, with a dance floor in front and cocktail tables surrounding it. People are lined up for a turn at activities set up by various Toyota vehicles.
McRee sang songs like “Is It Just Me?,” “Gone as It Gets,” “Mary Jane & Chardonnay” and a song she wrote with Lainey Wilson called “Tried & True.” She also performed a new song releasing on May 31st called “Usually You.”
Stagecoach artist Zach Top proves that old-school country is timeless
He's only 26, but the music of Zach Top feels like it was plucked right from the early 1990s, before he was even born. Top was one of the first acts to play at the Stagecoach country music festival on Friday and had a large early arriving crowd swaying at the Palomino tent.
His sound is definitely more Garth Brooks and Randy Travis than Luke Bryan and Luke Combs, particularly his opening song "Sounds Like the Radio," which immediately transported fans to the time of collared shirts and cowboy hats as opposed to T-shirts and backwards caps. His songs are right out of the country playbook, as he said, playing "a love song" and "a cheatin' song" back to back for fans in any phase of a relationship.
It was a fun set. He is now officially No. 2 two on my "Performers named Top" ratings behind ZZ and ahead of Carrot.
Lola Kirke debuts new song during early afternoon Stagecoach set
After a 20-minute delay likely due to the gates being opened late, singer-songwriter Lola Kirke was the first to take the stage at Stagecoach on Friday. She played songs like “He Says Y’all,” “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and a new one she said would be released soon called “Thank God For Cigarettes, It's the Least He Could Do.”
It was a small crowd that slowly filled out as people walked in to the festival grounds. Kirke gave a charming performance, and was dressed in a fun all-red outfit that, of course, included a cowboy hat. Fans not familiar with her country music may recognize her for her acting, which has included roles in “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Gone Girl."
Stagecoach staff open gates 25 minutes late, push start time of Lola Kirke's set
Lola Kirke, the British singer-songwriter and actress best known for her role in the TV show "Mozart in the Jungle," was originally scheduled to kick off the whole festival at 12:20 p.m. Friday, but by 12:19 p.m. when the crowd was still standing in a large line waiting to be let into the fest, it became clear she'd either be playing to an empty venue or the festival would start later.
Organizers opted for the latter, and moved Kirke's set to 12:40 p.m. Zach Top performed right after her in the Palomino tent, and only started 10 minutes later than his original set time.
The surprises keep coming: T-Pain will join Jelly Roll at Stagecoach tonight
T-Pain, whose set at Coachella two weeks ago was so popular, they reached capacity at the Heineken House, will jump onstage with country crossover artist Jelly Roll tonight, according to a press release from Amazon Music.
Jelly Roll and T-Pain recently joined forces for an Amazon Music-released cover of Toby Keith's 1993 classic "Should've Been A Cowboy," which they'll perform during Jelly Roll's 8:10 p.m. set on the Mane Stage today.
Jelly Roll is donating all proceeds from the Amazon Music Original to the Toby Keith Foundation, which supports the health and happiness of pediatric cancer patients.
Air quality alert in effect for Indio area
Heads up to festivalgoers: There's an air quality alert in effect for the Indio area through Friday night. What does that mean? Be sure to bring a kerchief, bandana or face mask.
Chainsmokers, Marshmello, Dasha added to Diplo's Honkytonk lineup at Stagecoach
Surprise: Stagecoach announced on Thursday a few sets for country music fans hoping to hear some DJs — and an emerging country artist who recently blew up on TikTok. Diplo's HonkyTonk, a tent dedicated to electronic dance and pop music, will now see special appearances by singer Dasha, electronic duo The Chainsmokers and DJ Marshmello .

Palm Springs area road closures: East Vista Chino
High winds and blowing dust have prompted Palm Springs Police to close East Vista Chino through the wash from Clubhouse View to the city limits due to poor visibility from blowing sand on Thursday night.
Will Stagecoach be livestreamed?
If you want to experience Stagecoach from the comfort of your own home, you can stream this year's festival on Amazon Prime Video or on the Amazon Music channel on Twitch . Each livestream is set to begin at 4 p.m. Pacific on April 26, 27, and 28.

Hayley Williams is ready to hit the road with longtime pal, Taylor Swift ! The Paramore frontwoman gushed over Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department , while offering a tease of the band's upcoming Eras Tour run.
The 35-year-old musician took to her Instagram Story on Monday, after enjoying an electric Record Store Day over the weekend, to share a handful of her current favorite albums. Unsurprisingly, Swift's TTPD made the list.
"Had me from the storytelling alone, my friend," Williams wrote. "Every one of us knows this kind of grief! It's so impressive to me how specific and colorful Taylor's words get without ever losing the universal thread. I'm so ready to be tour-mates."
Also receiving honorable mentions from Williams were Beyoncé 's Cowboy Carter , Brittany Howard's What Now , Rufus Wainwright's Want One , Bee Gees' Main Course , Tierra Whack's World Wide Whack , Radiohead's The Bends , The Smile's Wall of Eyes , Blonde Redhead's Sit Down for Dinner and Idles' Tangk .
Paramore is set to open for Swift on her Eras Tour when it resumes on May 9 in Paris, France. The band will continue to tour with her through her remaining international tour dates, which includes a whopping eight shows at London's Wembley Stadium .
The dates come less than a year after Paramore's headlining This Is Why tour was derailed due to a lung infection for Williams. At the time, Williams shared with fans that she would be using her downtime to "dive head first into creating some better routines" and getting back into "the creative process."
"For me, when we get into this mode it always feels nice to disappear in a way," she admitted in a post on Discord . "Maybe this time I will be able to find balance between the disappearing and yet not completely shutting out the world. But probably not."
It was last summer that Swift, 34, announced that Williams' band would be joining her on the Eras Tour around the same time she dropped Speak Now (Taylor's Version) . On the rerecorded full-length, Williams is featured on the from-the-vault track, "Castles Crumbling."
"Really can’t contain my excitement because… we’re adding 14 new shows to The Eras Tour," Swift shared in July 2023. "And I get to travel the world doing shows with Paramore!! Hayley and I have been friends since we were teens in Nashville and now we get to frolic around the UK/Europe next summer??? I’m screaming???"
In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show , Williams spilled details on how she and Swift first became friends back in 2008.
"Me and Taylor met because both of us -- Paramore and Taylor -- were nominated for Best New Artist the same year at the GRAMMYS," she said.
Though the late Amy Winehouse took the trophy that night, Williams and Swift ended up at the same after-party.
"We were at some GRAMMY party -- it was actually Timbaland's GRAMMY party. [It was] huge. I was very nervous," Williams recalled. "But a woman came up to me and she said, 'I'm Taylor Swift's mom and, you know, Taylor doesn't have a lot of friends her age that do music. And I would love to, like, you know, introduce you guys or get your number or whatever.'"
"So Andrea, the legend that she is, she connected us," Williams added, referencing Taylor's mom, Andrea Swift.
Swift's 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets D epartment , and its lead single, " Fortnight " featuring Post Malone , were released on Friday to much fanfare.
In terms of traditional album sales, Billboard reports that Swift's TTPD sold 1.4 million copies -- including CD, vinyl, cassette and digital download versions -- in its first day alone. This surpasses her own biggest sales week, when 1989 (Taylor's Version) sold 1.359 million copies. All signs indicate that TTPD will be making a massive, record-shattering debut when tracking for its first week concludes on Thursday, April 25.
The 31-track collection -- which turned out to be a surprise double album -- features a hefty helping of heartbreak songs following her splits from Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy , as well as a few sweet love songs amid her current relationship with Travis Kelce .
"She has put her heart and soul into the music, just like with everything she does," a source told ET about the album, "and can't wait for her fans to listen to it and to share it with them."

LOS ANGELES — Hannah Green won LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year Sunday, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at challenging Wilshire Country Club.
A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green — with help from Maja Stark — took the late drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second of the year.
“It’s really kind to me,” Green said about the course. “I felt like a couple times today almost got like a member bounce. I, obviously, really am fond of the golf club and joked that they didn’t approve it with me that they were making alterations. I love it here.”
Green closed with a 5-under 66 to beat Stark by three strokes. The 27-year-old Australian, also the winner early last month in Singapore, finished at 12-under 272 on the tree-lined layout with poa annua greens that become bumpy late in the day.
Green began the key run with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th and made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 13th. Then, after Stark bogeyed the par-4 16th two groups ahead, Green ran in a 25-footer for eagle from the fringe on 15 to open a four-stroke lead, and made it 5 under in five holes with a birdie on 16.
“When I chipped in on 12 I kind of felt like I really snagged one there,” Green said. “I really like the 13th hole and also played the 15th really well. When I made eagle on 15 that kind of sealed the deal. I did see Maja got it to 9 under so I know what I needed to do. Usually, I make it really tricky on myself and only win by a shot.”
Stark finished with a 68, rebounding from the bogey on 16 to birdie the final two holes. The 24-year-old Swede also finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year.
“I’m really proud of the way I’ve played,” Stark said. “I feel like I’ve hit a lot of good shots and I feel like my nerves kind of took over for a little while, but I was always able to get back to the normal — my normal state of mind.”
Haeran Ryu (69) was third at 6 under, followed by fellow South Korean players Jin Young Ko (67) and Jin Hee Im (72) at 5 under.
Grace Kim, four strokes ahead entering weekend after opening rounds of 64 and 66 and tied with Green for the lead after a third-round 76, finished with a 77 to tie for 25th at 1 under. She failed to make a birdie the final two days.
Korda withdrew from the Los Angeles event Monday, a day after her record-tying fifth straight victory.

Prince’s ‘Musicology’ at 20: A Look at the Album, Tour and Year That Saved His Career

Prince had been at a crossroads before, but never like he was at the beginning of 2004.
Popular on Variety
On February 8, he opened the 2004 Grammy Awards with a five-minute medley of “Purple Rain,” “Baby I’m a Star” and “Let’s Go Crazy” — with Beyonce — that may be the greatest opening to a music-awards show in television history. Two weeks later, he announced his first major tour in six years, noting that he’d be playing his hits again. “It’s older music, but it’s going to be played in a newer way,” he said, teasing that it might be the last time he played those songs in concert (it wasn’t). Then in March, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where he played a different, much longer medley of his hits during the ceremony — but of course what everyone remembers is his show-stealing solo during the all-star George Harrison tribute, which he finished by throwing his guitar into the audience.
Musically, “Musicology” was a return to accessibility. And although it didn’t reach the peaks of his classic ‘80s material — to be fair, not much music does — it was a vivid sampler of his musical styles that marked the return of the Prince that people knew and loved. It also was a genuine hit: The ticket-CD bundle helped loft the album to No. 3 on the Billboard 200, but it was top 5 in multiple countries all over the world without that boost, even though it didn’t have a big hit single. Recorded over several years, “Musicology”’s musical baseline is the brand of lean funk Prince was raised on — he even shouts out Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown and others in the album’s lead-off title track, which concludes with brief, scratchy recordings of some of his own hits in a mock scanning-the-radio-dial segment. There are a couple of “Do Me, Baby”-styled bedroom ballads, bombastic rock (“A Million Days”), even the new wave pop he hadn’t done since “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” on “Cinnamon Girl,” complete with splashes of vintage synthesizers. It winds down with a sultry, slow-burning burst of Aretha on the soulfully bluesy “On the Couch” and concludes with the breezy “Reflection.”
Even though Prince’s musicianship was at a new peak — his blazing guitar work, multi-tracked harmonies, production and arranging show an artist at the top of his craft — he was making music that was easy to like again, which isn’t to say it was simple; but even at its most sophisticated and complex (like the jazzy interlude at the end of “If I Was the Man in Ur Life”), it went down more smoothly. Indeed, the only area where “Musicology” fell flat is in the lyrics, which, like much of Prince’s later material, could be shockingly insipid. In particular, the album’s catchiest track, “Life of the Party,” is marred by lyrics so tossed-off that it sounds like they were written off the top of his head. (“So you’re havin’ a party?/ Goody for you/ All the beautiful people gonna be there/ Yeah, that’s cool.”) Even when he tried gravitas — about politics, war, global warming and moral decay on “Dear Mr. Man” — it wasn’t much better.
Prince was not an artist who’d ever lacked confidence, but by the end of 2004, the full swagger was back in his step. He’d significantly increased his wealth: The tour grossed nearly $90 million, the album was certified double platinum in the U.S. early in 2005, and it spurred sales of his entire catalog in an era when most people still bought CDs. But more importantly, it also marked the return of the Prince people knew, one who wasn’t completely refusing to be who he’d been, and not just musically: The weird outfits and otherworldly hairstyles had been replaced by sleek, classy suits and a short, trim cut.
The year’s creative efforts also gave him a model for how to pursue the rest of his career. Any time he wanted another million (or ten), he’d hit the road in some new and unusual way. Over the following years he played everything from a months-long Las Vegas residency to a premium-price one at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood; from a series of 21 dates at London’s Wembley Arena to a handful of shows in specific regions of the U.S. — even the Carolinas. He played brief “Hit and Run” tours that were announced just days before they launched; and of course he staged what is universally considered to be the greatest Super Bowl Halftime performance of all time in 2007. By contrast, his last tour, shortly before his death in 2016, was just him accompanying himself on piano. He kept finding new ways to keep himself interested.
And although he wouldn’t again reach the upper echelons of the charts in his lifetime and his albums continued to be frustratingly hit-or-miss, his sense of innovation returned with “3121,” the album that followed “Musicology” — on it, fans of “Sign O’ the Times,” which many regard as the peak of his creativity, could find much to grab onto, at least for the first half of the album. Unfortunately, most of the other albums he released in these years were maddeningly inconsistent (and sometimes appallingly bad) but although you won’t find any hidden “Purple Rain”s, there are overlooked gems to be found on many of them — like “Lavaux” and “Laydown” from “20Ten” (the latter of which features the priceless line, “from the heart of Minnesota/ Here come the purple Yoda”), and “Better With Time” and especially “ Ol’ Skool Company ” from “MPLSoUND.” Every once in a while on those albums and others, the Prince you love pops up with something so great it’s as if he’d never gone anywhere. And that’s really the gift of his scattershot, impossibly vast musical output — even though he’s no longer here, there’ll always be something new to find.
“Musicology” was the end of Prince’s wilderness years, and in every way, it set him up for the remaining dozen years of his much-too-brief life.
