National war museum.

Built in 1997 by the Express Citizens’ Forum, National War Museum in Pune is 25 feet tall and a huge draw among people who want to know more about the Indian army. The major attaction is a MIG 2 BN used in the Kargil War . Located in the Pune Cantonment area, the Museum pays tribute to soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country.

Aga Khan Palace

A major historical destination in Pune, the Aga Khan Palace was built in 1892 by Sultan Aga Khan to serve as a refuge for famine-hit people. Later, the place was used to imprison several famous freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi . The grand structure of this building makes it instantly recognizable.

Shaniwar Wada

Another historical landmark in the city of Pune, is a majestic ancient fort that was erected way back in 1732 that goes by the name Shaniwarwada. It used to be the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire . In 1828, fire destroyed the fort, so it was rebuilt and converted into a tourist attraction. There used to be several buildings inside but since all of them were destroyed in the fire, only descriptions are now available.

Bund Garden

Built in 1869, the Bund Garden on the banks of the Mula river is an oasis of peace and greenery in the middle of the busy city. This is a regular haunt for morning walkers and joggers, as well as migratory birds in winter. There is a separate kids play area within the garden, where little ones can enjoy the swing, the slide, and the see-saw. Also known as Mahatma Gandhi Udyan, the garden is popular all over the city and is a must-visit for all.

A very popular theme park in Pune, Adlabs Imagica has become a family attraction ever since it opened a few years ago. Pashan Lake

This beautiful artificial lake situated in the suburbs of Pashan Hills is an ideal spot to spend some quiet time. David Synagogue

Ohel David Synagogue is an old synagogue that sits on the Moledina Road. It is also known to locals by the name of Lal Deval. The brainchild of philanthropist David Sassoon, the building came into existence in 1867 and is built in the English Gothic style. The synagogue is protected by the Pune police and visits require prior permission.

Also known as the Red Palace, Lal Mahal was built by Shivaji’s father Shahaji Bhosale in 1630 AD. The original construction doesn’t exist anymore; the current building is a reconstruction. Although the new structure lacks most of the features of the old building, visitors will find a wide array of paintings and other historical artifacts inside. There is also a children’s recreational park within the premises.

Pune city is located in the state of Maharashtra in the western part of India. It is recognised as one of the most livable cities in India. Since the olden times, Pune has always been referred to as the city of hills. That is because of the unique terrain where the city is located. It is based inside a valley which is surrounded on all the sides with hills. This gives us numerous hikes, treks, waterfalls, lakes and dams that make it a popular travel destination for nature and trekking enthusiasts. Apart from the amazing natural terrain, Pune has inherited a lot of history which makes it equally popular among historians and history geeks.

Pune has a lot of history and culture which has been preserved well even with increasing metropolization. The history itself has left such a mark that cannot be erased at all. Best time to visit Pune city

The best time to visit Pune is the monsoon (Jun-Sept). The weather is lovely in the monsoon in Pune. If you like trekking then this is the best time to explore places near Pune. The winters are also equally beautiful. If you hate the wet and rains then winter is the time when you should explore Pune. Moreover, the summers are hot and dry. Average temperatures are as follows:

• Summer (Mar-May): 30°C to 40°C
• Monsoon (Jun-Sept): 20°C to 30°C
• Winter(Oct-Feb): 10°C to 30°C

How to reach Pune?

• By Air:  Pune has an international airport, so it is well connected by flights. If you are coming by air, you can come directly to Pune or come to the nearby airport of Mumbai.
• By Rail and Road:  Pune is also very well connected by Trains and Buses which you can use if you are coming from anywhere in India. This is the cheapest mode of transport to reach Pune.

Where to stay in Pune city?

Instead of staying in hotels, I would suggest you stay at one of the many campsites near Pune. You can camp near any one of the lakes in Pune city. It will take 2 days to visit all the major attractions in Pune city. After you are done with it, you should reserve some days for the crazy things to do in Pune. Moreover, there are a few places to visit near Pune, that are just amazing. All in all, you can plan a trip to Pune of 5-6 or 7-8 days, depending on your time availability and the things that you want to do in and around Pune.

Budget for Pune trip

Depending on how you spend your money, the cost of one person travelling in Pune is ₹ 4,000 – ₹ 5,000 per day ie $60 – $70 per day. This includes transport, daily meals and accomodation. If you join some trek group then the cost will go up for that particular trip. Moreover, a trip of one week for one person will cost from ₹25,000 – ₹30,000 ie. $ 350 – $ 430.

Is Pune Safe?

Pune is one of the safest cities in India. Apart from some Puneri sarcasm nothing else will hurt you when you are here. But in any case, it will be wise to take care while going out at odd hours of the night. There can be some pickpockets and groping people during the festive times, particularly during Ganpati Visarjan. This is when the city is full of crowds who come to Pune from all over Maharashtra, to experience the amazing festivities.

1.Shaniwar Wada Palace:  A prominent historical landmark in Pune is Shaniwarwada which is considered as one of the best pune tourist places. It is a majestic fortification which was built in 1732 and during that time it was the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire and they ruled over there until 1818. After they lost control to the British East India Company, they could not use it longer. But when they were in the reign, Shaniwarwada was the centre of Indian politics in the 18th century and is one of the famous places to visit in pune with friends. But in 1828, the fort was destroyed by a huge fire and later the remnants were transformed to become a tourist site. Shaniwarwada was a seven-storied capital building of the Peshwas and they wanted the building to be made of stone alone. However, after the completion of the ground floor, the people of Satara insisted that stone monument can be sanctioned and built only by the Shahu King, not the Peshwas. With respect to it, the Peshwas were asked to continue the construction of the building by using only bricks. But when the British attacked, only the base floor survived while all the other floors were completely destroyed. Earlier, the fort used to accommodate around thousand people. The major buildings inside the fort are Thora Rayancha Diwankhana or the court reception hall of the eldest royal member, Naachacha Diwankhana which is the dance hall, Juna Arsa Mahal that is the Old Mirror Hall and so on. Since all the buildings were destroyed in the fire, only descriptions of the remaining areas are available currently. The doorways were made of teak arches with ornamental teardrop teak pillars shaped like Suru trunks. Ceilings were beautified by numerous chandeliers and the floors were filled with polished marble adorned with rich Persian rugs. The walls displayed paintings depicting the Hindu epics. Shaniwar Wada, the seat of the Maratha empire from 1730 to 1818, is in the heart of Pune. It was built by Bajirao Peshwa as a residence for the Peshwas. And it displays the architectural prowess of the Maratha artisans.

Dr. Kelkar had an obsession with travelling and art. He travelled across the country and got something for his collection whenever he spotted anything exotic.

Dr. Kelkar built this museum in the memory of his son Raja, who suffered an untimely death. This three-storeyed building has Mughal-era lamps, musical instruments, and an excellent pottery collection on its display. 08 . Lal Mahal Pune

Lal Mahal is another place of historical importance in Pune. It’s close to Shaniwar Wada, and it has been the childhood home for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He stayed here for several years before he captured his first fort – Tornagad.

This palace was built by Shivaji's father, Sahaji Bhonsale, for Jijabai (Shivaji's mother) and Shivaji. It was entirely made of red bricks.

But it was ruined in the later years, and eventually destroyed because of various attacks. And it was never rebuilt after. What you see today is a smaller version of the building refurbished by Pune Municipal Corporation.

And only a part of Vishrambaug Wada is open to the public. But whatever it is, gives you a glimpse into the grandeur of Bajirao era. As you enter, you have a teak gallery on both sides, stone floor and decorated ceilings.

The first floor has the huge darbar hall with exquisite teakwood carvings on pillars and grand chandeliers. And the balcony is said to be the performance stage for musicians.

The complex also has a small Maratha museum and a handicraft shop.

12 . National War Memorial Pune

National War Memorial (also called Southern Command Museum) is a museum constructed in memory of Indian soldiers who lost their lives in different post-independence wars.

The museum opens a window into the past of the Indian Army’s Southern Command Wing. And it pays tribute to the soldiers of other armed forces too. It has arms, uniforms and various other war mementos.

The MIG 23 BN fighter jet used during the Kargil War is the major attraction here. But it also has Vijayanta (Indian Army’s first main battle tank) and INS Trishul warship on display.

It has a wide memorial wall with the names of all the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives. And right in the centre, you'll see a tall memorial tower which captures everyone’s attention. 13 . Shinde Chhatri Pune

Shinde Chhatri is a memorial building dedicated to Mahadji Shinde. He was the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army, from 1760 to 1780.

Mahadji Shinde played a significant role in resurrecting Maratha power, and he got many victories, regaining the lost glory of the empire. And Shinde Chhatri, his cremation ground, is a part of the city’s heritage.

The place is a little tourist complex surrounded by a high wall, with a tall entrance gate. A huge, stone sculpture of Mahadji Shinde welcomes you at the entrance.

Shinde Chhatri is built with yellow sandstone, in Anglo-Rajasthani architectural style. It has fascinating elaborate walls and carved ornate pillars. And the interior is covered with beautiful work in orange and green. A spiral staircase and stained-glass windows are also part of the vibrant architecture.

It also has a Shiva Temple, apart from the memorial. The temple sanctum has idols of different gods carved out of yellowstone. And its walls are painted with stories from Hindu mythologies.

14 . David Synagogue Pune

David Synagogue is a red building, built in the English Gothic-revival style. It was designed by Henry Stein Clair Wilkins, to be constructed as a church. And it has an obelisk right next to the entrance, which has a clock hung on it.

The synagogue was constructed by David Sassoon in the 1860s. And this iconic red structure, built with Deccan Trap stone, stands tall in the heart of the city.

It caters to the small Jewish community of Pune, and it’s one of the most popular monuments in the city. David Synagogue holds regular prayers and services conducted by congregational laymen, visiting Rabbi or a Hazzan.

The name is derived from the word “Chattu”, meaning Mountain with four peaks. Chaturshringi represents faith and power.

The temple is around 300 years old, and it has been renovated many times. Thousands of devotees have climbed the 100+ steps it takes to reach the temple shrine. The uphill task is made easier with sitting and resting spots on the way. So, you can take a break and marvel at the greenery around.

Chaturshringi Temple is the most crowded during the 9-day Navratri festival. The temple is lit up with lamps in a traditional Indian style. And a procession, with the Goddess resting in a silver chariot, is carried out. A fair is also held on the occasion.

The snake park also has a library in the vicinity. It provides books and brochures on different snakes around the world. And all the information is available even in Braille.

From time to time, Katraj Snake Park organises snake festivals and programs to discourage ill-treatment of snakes and promote their conservation. It also works towards getting rid of the prevailing myths and misinformation related to snakes.

22 . Pataleshwar Cave Temple Pune

Pataleshwar Cave Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (also called Lord Pataleshwar). The temple, although left incomplete, is still an architectural beauty. And it’s visited by tourists as well as devotees of Lord Shiva.

The temple was built in the 8th century. And as you enter it, you'll notice the enormous and finely crafted pillars of the temple. It has three sanctums, the central one of which is of Lord Shiva. The Shivalinga is installed here. A statue of Lord Shiva’s carrier Nandi bull is right in front of the sanctum.

Pataleshwar Temple also has other cave-like structures. These have statues of Hindu deities like Lord Ram, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and others. A Nandi Mandapa, with a statue of Nandi bull, is also built in the centre of the temple courtyard.

Another attraction of the temple is a tiny grain of rice, with 5000 letters inscribed on it.

The entire temple complex is surrounded by gardens, and has a calm atmosphere. And it has arrangements for tourists to sit, relax and marvel at its grandeur.

23 . Bhuleshwar Temple Pune

Bhuleshwar Temple is another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. And it attracts devotees from many neighbouring areas and other places in the state. It’s also frequented by historians, researchers and architectural enthusiasts.

This temple was built during the 13th century. And it’s known for its architecture.

Black basalt rock was used in the construction of this temple. And the architecture has Islamic elements like circular domes and minarets. Inside, you can see detailed stone-cut carvings all over the walls.

Bhuleshwar Temple has four sections, named Nandi Mandapa, Sabha Mandapa, Antarala and the garbhagriha (sanctum). It has five Shivalinga in the garbhagriha. And an interesting folk tale is associated with the temple. People say that when you offer a bowl of five sweets to the Shivalinga, one sweet disappears.

This temple houses idols of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Mahadeva too. An idol of Lord Ganapati in female attire (known as Ganeshwari or Lambodari) is also present here.

The temple is away from Pune city, in Daulat Mangalgad Fort, near Yavat village. And the cool atmosphere and peaceful ambience of the place creates a pleasant experience for the visitors. It’s one of the best places to visit near Yavat Pune.

24 . Mulshi Lake and Dam Pune

Mulshi Lake and Dam is among the most visited places near Pune. It’s a popular picnic spot among the local people. Adventure activities like camping, trekking and photography are also available, making it one of the best places to visit in Mulshi Pune.

26 . Shivneri Fort Pune

Shivneri Fort is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is also the place where Shivaji received his early training. And its magnificence attracts a considerable number of visitors. It was built as a military fortification in the early 16th century. And it has passed multiple hands.

Mud walls are built all around it. And multiple gates guard the entry. Inside the fort, you'll find a prayer hall, a tomb and a mosque. It also has statues of young Shivaji and Jijabai (his mother) here. The fort also has a pond called Badami Talav and two water springs – Ganga and Yamuna.

Sinhagad Fort is perched on a 760-meter-high-hill in the Bhuleshwar Range of the Sahyadri Mountains. Formerly known by the name ‘Kondhana,’ it served as the battleground for many legendary wars, including the ‘Battle of Sinhagad’ in 1670. The name ‘Sinhagad’ (meaning ‘Lion Fort’ in Marathi) is reminiscent of the fierce battles fought here. The historically significant Sinhagad Fort exposes the grand architecture of the Marathas, who strategically constructed this fortress at the center of the other forts that include Rajgad, Torna, and Purandar Forts.

The beauty of the endless greenery from the top of the hill makes it a popular tourist place in Pune and trekkers love trekking the steep paths to reach the hilltop for the views. Shaniwar Wada:

Shaniwar Wada is a grand fortification built by Peshwa Bajirao I and is the royal palace of the Peshwas, who ruled Maharashtra. There is an interesting reason behind naming the palace as Shaniwar Wada. Both the laying of the foundation stone and the welcoming ceremony coincidentally took place on Saturday (i.e. Shaniwar), and thus the fort (i.e. Wada) got its name.

Although a major portion of the fort was ravaged by a mysterious fire, the remnants of the huge palace characterized by Mughal architecture are still majestic and hence this tourist place in Pune is popular to this date. Your mind conjures up the grand seven-storied palace by simply looking at the five gateways, the interiors of the palace with heavy chandeliers, paintings decorating the walls, marble floors, the beautiful gardens around the palace and the stunning statue of Baji Rao I at the entrance of the fort! Parvati Hill:

Parvati Hill, situated at an altitude of 2100 feet above sea level, is one of the favorite tourist attractions in Pune. Nature lovers, trekkers, and devotees visit this place for their own reasons.

Devotees climb the 103 stone steps to offer prayers at the 17 th -century temples built by the Peshwas. This hilltop temple glows radiantly amid the lush greenery of the hills. The other four temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Rukmini. Visit the museum on the hill that houses the ancient portraits of the Peshwas, old coins, weapons, and other artifacts. Aga Khan Palace:

Named after Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III , Aga Khan Palace is one of the prominent historical landmarks in India. Originally built with the noble intention of assisting the poor when famine hits the nearby areas, Aga Khan Palace served different roles throughout history. It acted as a refuge to the poor, a prison of freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba, and Mahadev Desai, and now it is the headquarters of Gandhi Memorial Society and a famous tourist place in Pune. This is the place where the ashes of Gandhiji are stashed.

Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden or Pu La Deshpande Udyan:

You might have heard about the 300-year-old Kōraku-en Garden in Okayama, one of the traditional gardens in Japan. The Pu La Deshpande Udyan on Sinhagad Road is inspired by the Japanese culture and ideology of gardening and is the largest Japanese garden in Asia, situated outside of Japan.

Although walking on the lawn is not permitted owing to maintenance reasons, the walking paths take you through the diverse landscape of the garden comprising artificial ponds, waterfalls, hills, forest, well-cared green lawns, and plants. Cultural Capital of India

Pune  ( Marathi: पुणे ) , formerly known as  Poona  (the official name from 1818 until 1978), is one of the most important industrial and educational hubs of India, with an estimated population of 7.4 million as of 2020.  Pune is considered to be the cultural and educational capital of Maharashtra state. It has been ranked “the most liveable city in India” several times. Together with the municipal corporation areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad (PCMC) and Pune (PMC), and the three cantonment towns of Camp, Khadki, and Dehu Road, Pune forms the urban core of the eponymous Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR). As of 2021, with an area of 7,256 sq km, PMR is geographically the largest metropolitan region in Maharashtra state and 5th largest in India.

Location & History

Pune is widely regarded to be the second major IT hub and the most important automobile and manufacturing hub of India. Pune has several world class educational institutions and is therefore widely regarded as “Oxford of the East”. The city has emerged as a major global educational hub in recent decades, with nearly half of the total number of international students in the country studying in Pune Distinguished institutes of engineering, information technology and film, as well as schools for management science and advanced training, attract students and professionals from India and overseas.

Weather Conditions

The climate of Pune is quite pleasant. Pune has three distinct seasons: summer, monsoon and winter. Summers are typically hot with maximum temperatures ranging from 35 to 42°C. The warmest month in Pune is generally April as compared to the rest of the Deccan Plateau where it is May.

Pune does not get very hot; even during peak summer the air is cool and even standing under a tree can give respite form the heat. However, as sunlight can be intense leading to skin tan and sun-burn, be sure to carry and use sunscreens (above SPF-30). The nights in Pune are significantly cooler than most other parts in this region owing to its high altitude.

The average rainfall is approx 550mm. The city often receives local and heavy thundershowers with heavy downpours in May, which brings down the temperature. The rainy season can sometimes be gloomy, with cloud cover for days together. In winter, day temperatures can be as low as 24 – 28°C and temperatures at night as low as 5 – 8°C. Winters are generally dry. Normally, the climate in Pune is pleasant during the month of November.
