Jhalong is primarily a market for the local population. The small village is located on both sides of the Jhalong Bindu road. One road climbs the hills for a couple of hundred meters from the main market square and then runs parallel to the Jhalong Bindu road about a hundred meters above it. The residential area mainly consists of houses constructed during the construction of the Jaldhaka Dam during the 1960s and 70s. The village is spread around the school ground. The village would have less than a hundred homes in it. South of the village on the other side of the Jhalong river is a village locally known as Phase 2, as this is the location of phase 2 of the Jaldhaka Hydro electricity project.

During the daytime, villagers from all over the area congregate for their marketing needs. Just across the Jaldhaka river is Bhutan. Even the nearby Bhutanese villagers depend on Jaldhaka Market for their day-to-day purchases. The market is a cauldron of cultural diversity with Nepali, Bengali, Marwari, Adivasis, Rajbanshis, and Bhutanese people all coming here for their daily requirements.

Reaching Jhalong

NJP rail station Jhalong is about 100 km away and the travel time is about 2.5 hours. The Chalsa and Nagrakata rail stations are nearby. But long-distance trains do not have stoppages here. If you are travelling from Siliguri or another place in Dooars, you may get down at one of these stations where passenger trains and DMUs have a stoppage. The road to Jhalong is a diversion from National Highway 17 at Khunia More in Dooars. The khunia more is just 10 minute's drive from Chalsa (8 Kms) or Nagrakata (5 Kms) rail stations. From here take the northbound road that passes through the core forests of Chapramari wildlife sanctuary to reach Kumani about 12 km away. From Kumani take the right-hand road and drive for another 5 Kms to the Naxal bridge. The 17 km drive from Khunia to Naxal bridge is through dense forests which are home to the Elephants and Gaurs (Indian Bison), animal sighting on this drive is quite common, especially during the morning and evening hours. So keep your eyes and ears open. At the Naxal bridge, the forest ends and the hilly area starts. Also, you will get to see the Jaldhaka river flowing by your side and the Bhutan hills across the river. About 6 km from here is the Jhalong Bazar area. There are no restrictions related to travel in the area. However, a check post near Jhalong market registers outside vehicles going there. If you are hiring a car, make sure all documents of the car are in order as many vehicles in Dooars ply without proper documents and often get into trouble at the check-post. Transportation

Things to See near Jhalong

Tourism in the Jhalong – Bindu – Paren – Jaldhaka area is still nascent. Traditional tourist sightseeing points and standard itineraries are yet to take over here. Jhalong and Bindu are twin hamlets where the Indo-Bhutanese border areas meet to make some mesmerizing natural wonders and a fusion of Indo-Bhutia lifestyle.

Jhalong is 95 kms and Bindu is 107 kms from Siliguri, the main connecting city of the famous Dooars tourist region of West Bengal, India. Bindu is the last Bhutan border settlement of India where the three water bodies of Bindu Khola, Dudh Pokhri and Jaldhaka River meet.

The two small villages are surrounded by the Bhutan mountain ranges towering over the rocky Jaldhaka river valley and its sparkling white waterfalls. It is where low, whispy clouds touch down on earth from over the forest-clad hills.

It is also where cups of tea come with the fresh aroma of the world famous Darjeeling tea gardens. The best known tea garden here is Jitli. Along with cups of fresh tea, you can opt for garden-fresh juice from the innumerable orange orchards here.

Godak Village is a wonder because the folks here worship a small stream that flows out from a single rock and is said to never dry up. It is actually a religious spot called Debisthan, which means an abode of a goddess. Another village to visit is Dalgaon. Dhuley forest is also a beautiful tourist area. Two kms from Bindu is Khareykhola mini hydel project.

How to reach Jhalong and Bindu

Jhalong-Bindu is easy to reach. The nearest railway station is New Mal Junction but can be reached from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station too. Jhalong is 95 kms by road from Siliguri via Chalsa. The nearest airport is Bagdogra, from where you can hire vehicles to hit the road.

Best time to visit Jhalong and Bindu

Jhalong and Bindu can be visited anytime of the year. The monsoons bring in lush greenery whereas the winters bring in the birds.

Jhalong is becoming an upcoming destination among adventure enthusiasts and those who are interested in nature vacations. Jhalong is situated on the foothills of the Himalayas and there are numerous activities that you can engage in. Near by Dam at Bindu attracts various hill birds as well as migratory birds. Trekking is a popular activity in the region and the main routes lead to Tangta and Todey.

Bindu - Bindu Dam built on the Jaldhaka River to operate water supply of Jaldhaka Hydel Project. However, one can cross the dam only by foot. From there you can take a rare view of the snow Peak Mountains in winters. Bindu also famous for various hill birds as wel as some migratory waterfowl. It is situated just 8 kilometer from Jhalong.

Jaldhaka Hydel Project - The first hydroelectric project of India can be visited with the prior permission of the WBSEB authorities. Cardamom Curing Centre - On the way to Godak village, about 14 km from Bindu Government has set up a Cardamom Curing Centre. Cardamom is dyed and processed here before delivery. Godak is about 15 km from Bindu famous for a tribal Goddess.

By Road : North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Bhutan Govt. Buses, Mini Buses, Assam Transport Corporation Buses, Private Buses and Taxi are available from Siliguri to Jhalong. Journey time from Siliguri to Jhalong is about 2 hours 30 minutes. The best option to visit Jhalong from Siliguri is Taxi.

By Rail : Jhalong is 99 kilometers away from Siliguri. New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Railway Station are main railway station in this area. After you arrive at New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri, you can follow the road journey to reach Jhalong.

By Air : Nearest airport is Bagdogra. It is a domestic airport under Indian Army. All major air services are available from all over India. Distance between Bagdogra and Siliguri is 13 km. You can find out various vehicles to come in Siliguri, and then follow the above road or railway route.

5 Beautiful places to take your breath away:Jhalong, Jhaldhaka,Rocky island,Samsing,Suntalekhoka

My journey to these 5 places started in the morning after breakfast from Murti, WBFDC Hotel.

I was done with my breakfast and rushed out as soon as my Driver cum guide arrived to take me to these little charming places.

Before I start, would like to let you know that all these places are small village with few people living in there.

You can't expect your network to be your best friend...cuz there is no tower.. If your lucky n have an Airtel connection you will definetly get quite good network in these areas as well.

I started the Journey with Jhaldhaka, Jhalong and moved to Samsing, Suntalekhola followed by Rocky Island, the best kept for the last.

The entire journey was from morning 09.30 to evening 5.00. The trip cost for these places were 2500 bucks.

Its worth it specially if you have Bappa as a Driver n Guide cuz there is no time pull... Cuz I sat n relaxed at all the places... Stopover for lunch as well.

The Jaldhaka River is a trans boundary river with a length of 192 kilometres that originates from the Kupup or Bitang Lake in southeastern Sikkim in the eastern Himalayas and flows through Bhutan and the Darjeeling , Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts of West Bengal , India .

Jhalong is a small village situated on the banks of river Jaldhaka, near India-Bhutan border in the Kalimpong district in West Bengal, India. It is just 99 kilometers from Siliguri, towards Bindu. A Hydro Electricity Project is constructed on the Jaldhaka River and it acts as a bridge for crossing over to Bhutan.

Dooars 7 Point Sightseeing Tour (In 1-Day) – Cost, Itinerary

Apart from the several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, Dooars is also home to several quiet hamlets and scenic attractions that are worth visiting.

While staying at the Banani Tourist Lodge in Murti, we planned the seven points Dooars tour that cover most of the Dooars region of West Bengal. It is a 1-day tour that covers 7 beautiful attractions and provides you with mesmerizing views of the region along the way.

In this article, you will get to know about the Dooars’ seven points sightseeing trip from Murti. It will include places like,

Samsing (Shyamsing)
Suntalekhola
Rocky island

Let’s see each of these places in detail.

We started our trip from Murti WBFDC Banani Resort in the morning, around 9 AM. Our first stop was Samsing.

1. Samsing (Shyamsing)

Samsing is a quaint village known as the “Queen of Dooars”, located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

Elevated at 3000 feet, this place is endowed with beautiful orange orchards, rich rolling tea gardens, forests, and different vegetation, all enveloped by wild hills.

It’s a place that seems like a photograph with rivers and mountains ruling the sites. A lot is there to be seen and felt!

You can visit the Samsing viewpoint, which gives you mesmerizing views of nature. You can also have a picnic on the bank of the Murti River, flowing through the village.

After spending some time here, we went to our next stop, Suntalekhola.

2. Suntalekhola

Also called Suntaley Khola, the enchanting village lies in the district of Kalimpong , West Bengal. The serenity and scenic nature wrap around the whole place. The name Suntalekhola means “orange stream” in the local language, as the area is known for its orange and cardamom plantations.

Here you can get to experience adventures through trekking, hiking through the trails, and go splashing in the cool flowing river. You can also choose to stay in cozy homestays, forest bungalows, or jungle camps.

When you reach there, you will have to leave your car and take a local jeep to explore the local attraction. These attractions include the hanging bridge, a small dam, and a few other spots. We choose to only visit the Hanging Bridge. It was a scenic spot to spend some time amidst nature. You can also walk to the Hanging Bridge but is not recommended.

We then returned to the location where we left our car, had some tea at the local shop, and then started to our next destination, Rocky Island.

3. Rocky Island

This is a relatively new spot for tourists and nature lovers. Here, you can enjoy the serene beauty of the Murti River and the lush greenery of the surrounding forests, with the melodious sounds of various birds. The sound of the flowing river is very soothing along with the gushing cool breeze.

You can also indulge in some adventurous activities like rock climbing, trekking, and rappelling on the rocky slopes. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can camp in the wilderness and explore the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley National Sanctuary, which is home to many rare and endangered species.

From Rocky Island, we started our journey toward Bindu. We also had our lunch at a restaurant on the way.

This is a picturesque village that houses the second oldest dam in India, which is part of a hydroelectric plant on the Jaldhaka River.

Located at the border of India and Bhutan, the place is famous for its enchanting natural beauty. It is a realm of nature where the misty clouds descend to meet the earth covered with verdant forests. Laden with captivating sights, the village greets you with sincere hospitality.

You can also shop for Bhutanese chocolates, curios, shawls, and apricot wine from the small market set up by the locals.

After some shopping and spending time near the Bhutan border, we started out journey back towards Dooars. While returning we stopped at Jhalong.

Nestled in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, the secluded village is famous for its cardamom plantation and hydroelectric project.

The hill station showcases some amazing places along with some good adventurous experiences amidst nature. Witness some of the incredible landscapes and breathe in all the wild environments. Staying in a tent under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also enjoy bird watching, angling, and trekking in Jhalong.

It is also a hub of cultural diversity as it hosts the largest marketplace in the area, where villagers from different communities and even from Bhutan come to sell their products.

Jhalong is a lesser-known hill station of the Dooars region making it an ideal place to spend some lone time within nature.

We then returned back to Murti. Let me tell you a few points about Murti, the place where we were staying.

Murti is a scenic hamlet situated beside the Murti River that flows through Dooars. Placed perfectly in the woodlands, the extremely beautiful place attracts nature enthusiasts from all around.

Murti offers many activities for the visitors, such as bathing in the river, birdwatching, angling, and exploring the nearby wildlife sanctuaries of Gorumara and Chapramari. Camping along the river stream under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also just sit beside the river and experience the serenity of the place.

In this place, you can find a range of accommodation options, from government resorts to private lodges, where you can relax and admire the views of nature.

There is another spot in Dooars that we missed as we didn’t have enough time. Its Lalliguras.

7. Laliguras

Laliguras is a picturesque picnic spot situated near Samsing that is furnished with landscapes of tea gardens, forests, flowing rivers, and hills. It is located along the Murti River valley, offering a stunning view of the blue water and the green hills. The stretching meadows and the surrounding topography are worth looking into.

You can also enjoy the view of the Murti River flowing through the valley and spot some rare migratory birds in winter. Laliguras is a popular viewpoint of Dooars, where you can admire the beauty of nature and relax in the serene ambiance. Laliguras looks gorgeous during the monsoon when the river flows at its full strength.

These are some places you can visit as part of the Dooars 7-point sightseeing tour in one day.

It can cost you Rs. 2200 – 3000 per car for this tour, depending on the season and the type of car you choose. You can also have a decent lunch within Rs. 200 per person at any restaurant on the way to Bindu.

At Bindu there is a Dam over Jaldhaka River, which are controlled the water supply to the Jaldhaka Hydel Project at Jhalong and acts as a bridge for crossing over to Bhutan.

Binnaguri is a village of Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal; it is a distance of 99 km from Siliguri. Binnaguri lies in deep Dooars country and close to Bhutan and Nepal border. Binnaguri is also covered by many Tea gardens likeTelepara Tea Garden, Banarhat Tea Garden, Karbala Tea Garden, Lakhipara Tea Garden, and Gandrapara Tea Garden which is very popular in Dooars region. People from Tea graden areas are fully dependent in Tea garden for initials. If there is a decline in tea industry the poverty and unemployment are increased in all the nearby areas. Most of the employment opportunities apart from the tea gardens are in the Army Cantonment, an orphanage and a local chapter of the Dooars Branch of Indian Tea Association.

Buxa is a village in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal within Buxa Tiger Reserve. Buxa is one of the oldest settlements in North Bengal. It is 14kms from Alipurduar and 180 km from Siliguri well connected by both motorable road and railways. The name has been derived from Buxa Fort-a fort at an altitude of 867 meters on the Sinchula Range guarding the most important of the eleven routs into Bhutan. Buxa is rich with bio-diversity and has a great collection of rare orchids and medicinal plants. Because of inaccessible terrain some parts of Buxa hills in the Sinchula range are still unexplored. The veritable flora and fauna of these wet forests attracts and nature lovers. Buxa National Park is the largest forest in Dooars.

Chalsa is one of the most visually attractive destinations in Dooars region .It is a small pristine town situated just on the foot of the Himalayas in the Dooars in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. Chalsa is the headquarters of the Matiali community development block under the Malbazar subdivision of the Jalpaiguri district. It takes around 1.5 hours from Siliguri. This small town is fully surrounded by hills, tea gardens, rivers and forests. One part of the town is surrounded byGorumara National Park and other part with Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Through all this mixed combination Chalsa now become fine quaint village in the Dooars region. Both forests are famous for its Wildlife animals, especially for elephants, one-horned rhinoceros and gaurs. For its real natural beauty, it is known as “Queen of Doors in British India. Chilapata is a dense natural forest near Jaldapara in Dooars region of West Bengal, It is about 20km from Alipurduar town and is within the Jalpaiguri district. Chilapata is the home of elephant, one horned rhinoceros, leopards and wild pigs, Chilapata was once infamous for dacoits, but now it is safe and a popular destination for tourists. The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation has set up an eco-tourism resort named Mendabari Jungle Camp at Kodalbasti which is 2km inside Chilapata Jungle. As river Torsha flows dawn from the hill, it travels through the plains of Dooars dividing a continuous stretch of forest into Jaldapara and Chilapata.

Coochbehar is the only well planned town located in the north eastern part of West Bengal; Coochbehar shares its borders with Assam in the East and neighbouring country Bangladesh in the south. The town Coochbehar is beautifully decorated through its striking monuments and palace . The main attraction in Coochbehar is the Palace of the Koch King with classic designed, Apart from palaces and majestic building there are multiple other tourist attraction in this culturally haven town ,its fine climate freshness, real story of the medieval period are beyond attraction. Places in Coochbehar are like worth visiting. Rath Mela, Rass Mela, Baradebi Mela are the greatest festival of Coochbehar.

Dhupjhora is a midsized small village located in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal. Dhupjhora is situated close to River Murti and on the outskirt of the famous Gorumara National Park. It is beautiful l settlement village which is surrounded by forests meandering rivers. Dhupjhora is also locally known as the 'Elephant camp' because of the philkana – elephant stables – located here. The person who is nature lover or interested to watch the wild life this is the right place where he should surely visit on the other sites the Bank of River Murti gives a spectacular view. Basically this is an Elephant Camp where the Forest Department’s elephants are kept and cared for.

Gajoldoba is a small village in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. It is located 25 kms distance from siliguri. It is a picturesque tourist destination on the Teesta Barrage fully surrounded by Baikunthapur Forest. Gajoldoba is 25 kms from Siliguri, Gajoldoba is a picturesque tourist destination on the Teesta Barrage, Jalpaiguri District adjacent to the Baikunthapur Forest. Gorubathan is a small town in the Kalimpong Subdivision of Darjeeling District. The place is about 90 km from Kalimpong town (via Lava) and about 59 km from Siliguri. Local children out there used to go for swimming in Chel River during summer season; it is also famous for its beautiful landscape of the Neora River, hilly alpine forests and Tea garden. Hasimara is a small town in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal state near the borders of Bhutan. It takes 126km from Siliguri to Hasimara. The town is located central Dooars region of the district and is surrounded by Tea gardens. Hasimara lies on the way of Phuentsholing the gateway of Bhutan , and the borders is just 17 km away. Hasimara lies between two rivers running from North to South. Torsha on the west and Basra on the East, both offer picnic spots, both rivers are perennial. Jaldapara is one of the most popular forests of Dooars. Jaldapara was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary back in 1943 for the protection of Wildlife, particularly single horned Rhinos. Recently in 2012 the forests of Jaldapara has been upgraded to the status of a National Park. Jaldapara is situated at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas in Alipurduar district in West Bengal. River Torsha runs through this forest sanctuary which is mostly covered with tall grasses. The Western side of River Torsha is called the Jaldapara and the Eastern side is known as Chilapata forests. Jaldapara is best known for its population of one horned Asiatic Rhinos, which is the second largest in the world after Kaziranga forests of Assam.

Jaldhaka is a situated just a few kilometres away from Jhallong in the state of West Bengal. There are not much more places to visit but it is an upcoming tourist destination. The place is actually a scenic location but there are only few tourist places to visit. How to Reach Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

Located 68km from Siliguri, the closest railway station from Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is in Chalsa. But visitors prefer to board a train for New Mal Junction (NMZ) or Malbazar to reach Chapramari due to its connectivity.
