See The Full Hendrick Motorsports Drone Tour From 'Race For The Championship'

One of the best shots from the "Race For The Championship" premiere episode just got bigger and better.

As anyone who tuned into the series premiere of USA Network’s “ Race For The Championship ” knows, one of the most interesting shots was the impressive drone tour of the Hendricks Motorsports facility. Well, there’s plenty more where that came from.

How to Watch

Catch up on past episodes of Race For The Championship on Peacock

“Race For The Championship” viewers only got a taste of the tour the drone’s expert pilot did of the massive multi-building site. Fortunately, the team uploaded the full five-minute flight to YouTube offering an inside look at what some of the top-tier racers who compete with the team get to see each and every day.

The drone footage seeks to capture a portrait of the hard work that goes on to make its Cup Series team members Kyle Larson , Chase Elliott , William Byron, and Alex Bowman so competitive on the track. That’s evident by the fact it starts by showing a group of people on the grounds’ outdoor field getting an intense workout in, training for pit road.

From there, the drone spends some time touring the showroom and Hendrick Motorsports museum on the grounds. If you’re a classic car enthusiast , this place will absolutely knock your socks off. There are shiny, gorgeously maintained vehicles as far as the eye can see. While there are far too many to count, a few of the old Hendrick Motorsports stock cars are clearly visible, offering a little insight into the history of the team.

Hendrick Motorsports was established in 1984 by the current owner, Rick Hendrick, who turned his passion for cars into a successful retail automotive business before making the jump to being one of the most robust NASCAR racing teams in the game. Since its founding, Hendrick Motorsports has earned a record 14 car owner championships in the sport's premier division.

The drone tour goes on to show exactly why they’re such a winning team as it passes over a live pit crew practice, showing the speedy, labor-intensive steps that go into a real-life NASCAR pit stop.

From there, the drone makes its way to another building where business is being conducted among employees having a large meeting. That’s when it gives the best look at the behind-the-scenes work being done at the facility as it enters the engineering section. The massive labyrinthian building has several rooms with engines being tested and constructed as well as cars in various stages of development, from the welding of a chassis to the delicate placement of decals.

The impressive drone footage ends with the device shooting up into the air and leaving the viewer with a shot of just how massive in scale the entire Hendrick Motorsports operation truly is.

Fans can see more what goes on inside the facility by tuning into “Race For The Championship” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network .

Hendrick Motorsports’ Martinsville celebration and milestone came at complicated track for NASCAR’s winningest team

can you tour hendrick motorsports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — No detail had been overlooked as Hendrick Motorsports spent more than a year planning its 40th anniversary celebration. The first employees hired by Rick Hendrick were invited, special throwback paint schemes designed and Hendrick was to drive the pace car.

The extravaganza was to be held at Martinsville Speedway, the first track Virginia native Hendrick attended as a child. It’s sort of his home track — even though Charlotte Motor Speedway is in the shadow of what Hendrick calls his motorsports “campus” — but it’s also the most complicated track for NASCAR’s winningest team.

Martinsville is where Hendrick has built its legacy with a track-record 29 victories, and it is where Rick Hendrick’s first of a record 305 wins (and counting) has kept the team in business.

It is also where his son, his brother, his twin nieces and key executives were among the 10 killed in a 2004 plane crash on its way to that October’s race.

Just like he wasn’t there for the day of a 1984 organization-saving win and that awful day 20 years ago, he wasn’t there for the 40th celebration at Martinsville over the weekend.

“The crash that took so many of our people makes it hard to go back up there,” Hendrick said Monday. “But you can’t blame the track for what happened at the airport.”

Hendrick tends to make the annual trip each spring — it is the October race he struggles with — and a great deal of effort was put into the celebration. But the 74-year-old Hendrick had knee replacement surgery five weeks ago and scratched his trip.

Hendrick instead watched on television at home with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, surrounded by celebratory balloons, as Daytona 500 winner William Byron led a 1-2-3 finish for Hendrick Motorsports.

It all figures that Martinsville, again, played such a role in what’s become of that kid who grew up on a tobacco farm near tiny Palmer Springs, Virginia. He worked on race cars in his spare time but really wanted to race speed boats. His mother put an end to that so Hendrick, who had first visited the Martinsville short track with his father, moved to automobiles.

He is now the largest private car dealer in the United States, his NASCAR team is the greatest in sport’s history and next month Rick Hendrick will enter the Indianapolis 500 for the first time when Kyle Larson attempts to run the race and the Coca-Cola 600 in North Carolina on the same day.

Hs rise is full circle from Martinsville, where start-up All-Star Racing was out of money just a handful of races into Hendrick’s NASCAR career. His crew chief talked Hendrick into at least giving Martinsville a go, and even though Hendrick had to miss the race because he was at a church retreat, Geoffrey Bodine won the race that helped launch Hendrick into what it is today.

Some facts:

— Bodine’s win at Martinsville came in the eighth race of the 1984 season; Byron’s win Sunday came in the eighth race of Hendrick’s 40th anniversary season.

— Byron’s win was a Martinsville team record 29th for Hendrick, which became the first team in track history to go 1-2-3 at NASCAR’s oldest and shortest track.

— Martinsville is the only track where the current Hendrick lineup of Byron, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson each has won a race. Hendrick has won the last three spring races at Martinsville and five of the last Cup Series races there, including the fall playoff race.

— Hendrick Motorsports is the only team to have led over 10,000 laps at Martinsville.

Off the track, Martinsville is where Hendrick suffered his greatest loss. His only other mention Monday of the 2004 plane crash was that “spring race I can go to OK; fall race, no.”

And so he ended up missing out on his own party Sunday at Martinsville, where he texted vice chairman Jeff Gordon so many times throughout the day that Gordon had to stop looking at his phone. The wait was worth it when Gordon called from victory lane.

“I didn’t want to do anything other than hold my breath and wait for it to be over,” Gordon said. “When I did talk to him, we just had a great moment of kind of in awe and shock. Even as much as he’s accomplished, this company has accomplished, when we do things like [Sunday], especially something that’s never done before, the 1-2-3 finish at Martinsville, he’s just so humble and appreciative. I love that about him.”

Hendrick Motorsports Celebrates 40th Anniversary With Historic 1-2-3 Finish

MARTINSVILLE, V.A.- All weekend long, the main focus of Sunday’s (April 7) NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway seemed to be on Hendrick Motorsports’ (HMS) 40th anniversary celebration.

Memories of Hendrick’s team-saving first win with Geoff Bodine at Martinsville in 1984 were mentioned continuously, reflecting on a moment that sparked one of the greatest organizations in NASCAR history.

The team’s four cars were adorned with special ruby red paint schemes. Hendrick memorabilia could be found scattered all over the facility, with all 28 wins for the team depicted in the turn four pedestrian tunnel. Over one thousand HMS employees and family members were stationed in turn two.

Those attendees were treated to a historic result and a feel-good burnout on Sunday afternoon.

After 415 laps, the story remained with Hendrick – and for good reason. The organization not only capped off its weekend in victory lane, but did so with a 1-2-3 finish for the team, the first time any organization has done so at Martinsville. William Byron survived an overtime restart for the win, with teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott rounding out the top three.

The weekend dominance didn’t just cover the late stages of Sunday’s race. Larson set the fast time in qualifying with a blistering lap on Saturday, just edging out Bubba Wallace for the pole.

He went on to lead every lap of stage one, picking up the stage win before giving up the lead on pit road. The four Hendrick teammates remained in the top four throughout stage two, before Elliott powered around the outside of Denny Hamlin to take his turn at the front in the final stage.

Elliott led until Hamlin retook the lead on lap 258, which set up a Toyota vs. Hendrick showdown leading into the final set of pit stops under green. The Georgian ran second, with Larson fourth and Byron fifth. Wallace split the trio in third.

Crew chief Rudy Fugle elected to short pit the No. 24 under green in an attempt to jump the cars ahead – a strategy that paid off handsomely. A trio of fast pit stops and strong out laps lifted the to the top three spots following the green flag stops, with Byron out front while Elliott and Larson trailed behind.

The three ran that way throughout the final run of the race and it looked as though they had the 1-2-3 finish locked up. There was a moment of uncertainty when the caution flag flew with three laps to go for John Hunter Nemecheck , pushing the race to overtime, but in the end the trio held their ground to deliver the result.

While they each wanted to win, the group raced fairly on the restart. Byron survived a bump from Elliott for the win, while Larson snagged second away from the 2020 champ on the final lap.

At the end of a memorable weekend, the story book officially had its ending. Hendrick Motorsports celebrated its 40th anniversary in victory lane at the site where it all began. Team owner Rick Hendrick wasn’t present, but called in to discuss the victory with FOX Sports afterward.

“(I’m) just so proud of everyone at Hendrick Motorsports,” Byron said. “Grew up a big Hendrick fan. To be here for the 40th anniversary, all that goes into just this organization, all the people, it’s all about the people. Just want to thank Mr. Hendrick and Linda and everyone involved.”

For Larson, second was still a solid result on a day when the focus was more on the company than the individual drivers. He was ultimately happy to have contributed to the cause.

“Yeah, it was a huge day for Hendrick Motorsports,” Larson said. “Just really, really happy for Hendrick family and everybody who’s been involved in this company from the beginning. You know there was 1,500 people off turn two from Hendrick Motorsports and their families today so I knew us four guys were going to have a shot at a good run, I didn’t know that we would run one, two, three, so that’s just really special.”

Elliott settled for third of the bunch, but was still content, knowing he had abused his tires on the final run before the last restart. He echoed Larson’s sentiments in mention his joy to play a part in a special moment for the team.

“Most of the restarts went really well,” Elliott said. “That last one, I had just hurt the rear tires on that run before, I was really worried about getting going and having enough grip to make it work. Nonetheless, happy for William, happy for everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, really special to have all of our folks here, or a lot of them and their families. I hate Rick couldn’t be here today and Linda, but certainly happy and proud to be a part of their organization.

Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Gordon , one of the company’s biggest stars, shared in the emotions of the day. He spent the entirety of his Cup Series career with the organization, earning four titles and nine wins at Martinsville, including a final Championship-4-clinching triumph in 2015.

“It’s obviously pretty surreal,” Gordon said of the day. “I felt like I was in the car there about 50, 60 laps to go because it reminded me of when you’re leading and you feel like you’re going to do something really, really special. You start thinking about the moment, what it means. You start getting choked up a little bit. I was like, ‘Stop, stop, stop, can’t think that, we got a long way to go here.’

“Usually it’s not that easy, and it wasn’t.”

Describing the sensation and importance of such a special day proved difficult afterward.

“I don’t even know where to begin honestly,” Gordon said. “There’s so many things that are special. (I) immediately looked up on the hill and saw all those ruby red shirts just going nuts. Now they’re out there waiting to have a picture with our whole organization.

“You just cannot plan it any better, script it any better.”
