Khajuraho Trip, Orchha Trip

KHAJURAHO ITINERARY FOR 3 DAYS COMBINED WITH ORCHHA

Khajuraho & Orchha Tour is one of the most perfect short trips, which can be easily planned for just 2-3 days. Here, I am sharing a perfect Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 days combined with Orchha, which covers entire guidelines on how to reach, where to stay, places to visit, trip cost etc, which will help in planning a beautiful and short trip to Khajuraho & Orchha.

ABOUT KHAJURAHO

Khajuraho is one of the most popular historical destinations of India. It is famous for its gigantic and magnificent temples built by Chandela Dynasty between the 10 th  – 13 th Century. Khajuraho Temples are built in Hinduism and Jainism style. Originally there were 85 temples spread across roughly 20 sq km area. Now it is reduced to 25 temples spread across 6 sq km area. Khajuraho Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hence, highly preserved.

The most famous temple of Khajuraho is  Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are other temples as well dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Sun God and Jain Tirthankaras. The entire temple region is divided into three parts – Eastern Group of Temples, Western group of Temples and Southern Group of Temples.

Western Group of Temples among all is the largest area with maximum temples and most visited. The most mesmerising thing about these gigantic temples is the way intricate carvings depicting various human emotions are sculpted on its exteriors. This also surprises me about the excellence of fine art and architecture around that time.  The beauty of these Temples cannot be described in words and one can only understand it, after paying a visit. This place attracts a huge number of visitors not only from India but also from abroad.

Trip to Khajurahu is always clubbed with a visit to Panna National Park , Raneh Waterfall and Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary because they are very close to Khajuraho.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

ABOUT ORCHHA

Orchha  – another small Heritage town, which is 175 kms from Khajuraho, and roughly a 5 hour drive. This is again a historical place, which was the capital of Bundela Rajput rulers in the 16 th and 17 th century.

Orchha is situated at the banks of Betwa River hence gives a picturesque view at the time of sunset and sunrise. Its partially ruined forts and the very famous Ram Raja Temple, which is the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped in his King form, gives a sneak peak of the history of this place.

Orchha and Khajuraho together is an ideal weekend getaway for all neighbouring cities in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Overall, it makes a perfect fun filled 3 days trip full of history and adventure.

As we belong to the Northern part of India, Khajuraho is just a 5 – 6 hour road drive. We left early morning to avoid day time traffic. After reaching Khajuraho, we checked into our Hotel – Radisson Jass Hotel and relaxed for some time. We then grabbed lunch at the hotel’s restaurant only. After lunch, we went to see the magnificent Khajuraho Temples .

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Western Group of Temples

We decided to visit the Western Group of Temples , which are the biggest, most popular and the most beautiful ones. If one has visited the Western group of Temples, then the Eastern Group of Temples and other Jain and Hindu temples will not appeal much as the best has already been seen. The Western Group of Temples was a short brisk walk (15 mins) from our Hotel. You can also hire an auto for the same. Do not take your personal car to visit the temples, as lanes closer to the temples are narrow and therefore one can get stuck in traffic. After reaching the temple area, we bought tickets from the booth beside the entry gate. Price was Rs 40/Person for Indians and Rs 600 (8 US$)/Person for foreigners.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Upon entry, we were totally taken aback by the view the place had to offer. It felt like we have entered some different era. We were totally blown away by the beauty of these gigantic huge Temples all around and the enormous well maintained gardens and lawns.

Khajuraho Temples

One by one, we covered all the temples – Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Lakshman Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Chitragupt Temple, Devi Mandap, Varaha Mandap etc at this premises admiring each and every temple, checking the intricate craftwork done on them, the richness in the entire structure and the magnitude of the grandeur of the whole area. We also enjoyed the wonderful sunset here.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Light and Sound Show

On our way back, we saw the banner of Light and Sound Show . As there is not much to do in Khajuraho in the evenings, so we bought tickets for the same. It was Rs 250/Person for Indians and Rs 700 (9.5 US$)/Person for foreigners. Timing of Light and Sound Show is from 7:30 pm to 8:25 pm. The entire show was in the lawn right next to the temples. There were digital lights and narration along with music depicting the history of Khajuraho Temples. Overall it was an interesting show and also a nice way to understand the history of these temples.

Light & Sound Show Khajuraho

After the show finished, we went for a stroll in the nearby area and spotted Café Raja . We loved the ambience and food there. If interested in Indian food then you can try Badri Seth Marwari Bhoj . Later, we went back to the Hotel and relaxed.

Day 2: Leaving Khajuraho, Raneh Fall, Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary, Panna National Park, Pandav Fall, reaching Orchha

Raneh Fall, Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary and Panna National Park are some of the attractions nearby Khajuraho. Right after breakfast, we checked out from our hotel in Khajuraho and went to see the Raneh Waterfall .

Raneh Waterfall

Raneh Waterfall is just 20 kms from Khajuraho and takes only 40 mins to reach by Car. One can also hire auto/taxi from Khajuraho to reach here.

Raneh Fall

Entry price was Rs 700 (9.5 US$) for 4 wheeler and Rs 400 (5.5 US$) for an auto plus an additional Rs 100 (1.5 US$) for a guide. Hiring a guide is compulsory here. Also known as the  Mini Grand Canyon of India – Raneh Waterfall was spectacular. The canyons at Raneh Falls were made from molten lava millions of years ago and were a treat to the eyes. We saw the Ken River surrounded by rocks forming different hues of shiny dolomite, quartz and granite. Walking through these canyons was an amazing experience. It is said that the best time to visit Raneh Fall is during the rainy season – July to September, when the water flows from 5 different points, giving a perfect scenery kind of a view like that on the postcards.

Ken River - Raneh Waterfall Khajuraho

Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary

Attached to Raneh Fall is Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary , which leads you inside the jungle. Sadly we didn’t see any Ghariyals (Crocodiles) there but we did see deers, rabbits, Nilgae (Antelopes) etc in the jungle area.

Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary

Panna National Park

After spending some time here, we went to Panna National Park (Panna Tiger Reserve Entry Gate Malda), which is 25 kms from Raneh Fall, which took us roughly 30 mins to reach. Park entry was Rs 200 (2.5 US$)/Car. We did not spot many animals here (probably because of the timing). We also heard that there are hardly any Tigers left at Panna National Park, (just 5-10 left) as all were killed by poachers in the past, and so chances of spotting them are very rare.

If you want to spot animals then you can go for morning Safari Tour which starts from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., charges for Jeep Rs 1000/Jeep (capacity 6 people) from Khajuraho. We were not morning people; hence we decided to skip it.

Panna National Park

Pandav Fall

We went to Pandav Fall , which was in the interiors, around 8 kms. Park entry includes entry for this place as well. One needs to climb down around 300 rocky stairs to reach the waterfall base. It is a hidden gem, a place in the middle of nowhere. It is said that the Pandavas had rested in these caves during their exile since the falls have been anmed after them. The sight is really beautiful and the lake appears green due to the surrounding lush green jungle.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

After the visit, we went straight to Orchha as it was a 5 hour drive from here.  We stopped at a Dhaba (Roadside Eatery) for lunch in between. After reaching Orchha, we checked into our Hotel – Amar Mahal, had dinner and slept.

One can also plan to stay at Panna National Park for a day at Taj Safari Lodge , if budget is not an issue. This sprawling 5 star property with stone cottages, excellent services and private jungle area is a hidden treasure in the middle of the jungle. Tariff starts from Rs 25000/- per day. There is another very good property right at the entry of Panna Tiger Reserve Madla Gate – MPT Jungle Camp.

Day 3: Orchha – Ram Raja Mandir, Orchha Ford Complex (Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal) and Cenotaphs Orchha (royal Chattris from Betwa River Kanchan Ghat)

There is not much to do in Orchha apart from visiting the two major attractions here: Ram Raja Mandir and Orchha Fort Complex.

Ram Raja Mandir/Chaturbhuj Temple/Laxminarayan Temple

After having a heavy breakfast at the Hotel, we went to visit the auspicious Ram Raja Mandir , also known as Orchha Temple , which is just a 10 mins walk from Amar Mahal . As the name suggests, it is the only temple in India where lord is worshipped in his king form. This temple attracts thousands of devotees every year from around the world. You can also visit Chaturbhurj Temple and Laxminarayan Temple , which is very close to Raja Ram Mandir.

Khajuraho Itinerary for 3 Days

Orchha Fort

After paying homage to the temple, we went to Orchha Fort , which is also just a 10 mins walk from Ram Raja Mandir. Orchha Fort is a big complex, consisting of various palaces and temples. The main ones are the Jahangir Mahal , Raja Mahal and Rai Praveen Mahal over looking river Betwa.

Orchha Fort

Sunset at Orchha

When it was close to sunset we went to the riverside area. One can also go for boating. On crossing the river to the other side one can witness the amazing view of 14 Chattris (Cenotaphs), which were built by the Bundela Rulers. Apart from boating, other activities like rafting and kayaking are also available.

Betwa River - Orchha

Post this visit, we grabbed some food. There are various options to choose from. We quite relished the food at our Hotel restaurants so we went there only. Next day we checked out from the Hotel and this ends our 3 days getaway to Khajuraho, Orchha with Panna National Park.

If you have one more day in Orchha then you can plan to visit Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary and Orchha Bird Sanctuary.

Our complete guide to plan a trip to Khajuraho & It’s UNESCO World Heritage Temples

About Khajuraho

Khajuraho is a very small town located in the Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh. But centuries ago, it was the capital of the major Rajput kingdom of the region – Chandela Dynasty . And they ruled in the 10th – 12th century. So, that is when they constructed the world famous temples of Khajuraho , which are a UNESCO world heritage now and popular all over the world as the “Erotic Temple Complex”.

Coming soon : Main Temples to visit in Khajuraho

Where to stay on your trip to Khajuraho

The Khajuraho main road that one takes on a trip to Khajuraho from NH39 to enter the city has a lot of hotels and resorts on either side. Actually, you can browse and book one here . After all, the advantage of residing on this road is that the temples are very close by. Actually we stayed at The Clarks Khajuraho . The hotel was neat and clean, with big premises, in campus parking and good food. And it was only 5 minutes drive to the western temples complex of Khajuraho from this hotel. Also, it was just 6-7km from the NH. So, overall, we could save time both ways on our trip to Khajuraho, traveling to and from Khajuraho as well as visiting the temples. Even the area right near the Western Temple Complex has a lot of stay options.

Can I do a day trip to Khajuraho

Khajuraho is well connected from most of the major cities of MP and also cities in UP. Definitely it is possible to do a day trip to Khajuraho, visiting the temple complexes and returning by the evening. But, from our own experience, I will highly recommend staying overnight. Because it gives one chance to visit the temples towards the evening and early morning when it is not very hot. And also not very crowded. We visited the main complex – the western Group of Temples the next day morning, after staying overnight. And it was really very pleasant to visit the complex early in the morning. Since, the cool, pleasant weather supported a lot. And we energetically visited all the temples, comfortably covering the grounds between them.

khajuraho orchha tour

Also, driving and then a lot of walking between the temples will be tiring in my opinion. However, if you are really constrained by time, yes, it is possible to do a day trip to the temples of Khajuraho. But mostly it will be a very long and tiring day.

How to reach Khajuraho

Khajuraho is well connected with the rest of India through both roadway and railways. In fact, on our trip to Khajuraho, we came to Khajuraho from Bandhavgarh after doing a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh . However, one can easily reach here from Agra, Delhi, Gwalior, Bhopal or other parts of India via road. And the NH39 , which will connect Khajuraho to most of these other towns and cities, is being converted in a very nice 6 lane national highway at the time of this writing. And looking at the pace of work that we observed on the roads, in a few months, it will be fully ready. So, this will drastically reduce the travel time between Khajuraho and other towns. Although Khajuraho also has an airport, but there are hardly any commercial planes. So, road and rail are the primary means to reach Khajuraho. However, one can always fly into Gwalior, which has a very commercialised airport with many flights operating from all over India. From Gwalior, it will be a 5 hours road trip to Khajuraho.

General tips on doing a trip to Khajuraho

  • The Western Group of Temples, which is the main temple complex in Khajuraho opens up for public as early as 6:00am and is open till 6:00pm (or sunset, whichever happens earlier).
  • Prefer visiting the Western Group of Temples during your trip to Khajuraho in the early morning hours as the crowd is least and the climate is pleasant even in summers
  • There is a ticket of INR 40/- per head for Indian citizen to enter the western Temple complex
  • There are government designated guides available at the entry of Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho in case you want to hire one. Audio guides are also available.
  • For visiting the Southern and Eastern Group of Temples in Khajuraho, you can either hire a guide or rent a tuk-tuk (autorickshaw) which will take you to the different temples through the lanes of the village.
  • Wear comfortable cotton cloths and comfortable shoes or slippers to walk. When visiting the temple complexes, you will need to often leave your shoes at the stairs. So slip-ons really help.
  • October – February will be the best time to visit the Temple Complexes of Khajuraho as the weather is otherwise too hot.
  • You can carry water bottle inside the main temple complex but carrying food is not allowed. If you have something with you, you can leave it at the entry gate and collect later.
  • Some temples like the Chausath Yogini Temple are located far from the others, so, do designate ample time to visit these. It is one of the oldest temples of Khajuraho. Check our upcoming writeup to know more about the temples of Khajuraho that you shouldn’t miss visiting –

Must visit temples of Khajuraho

khajuraho orchha tour

An idle itinerary for a trip to Khajuraho Temple Complexes

Day1 : arrival in khajuraho, visiting eastern & southern temple complexes.

On your trip to Khajuraho, target to arrive in Khajuraho by max noon. Check-in into your hotel. Have lunch. We arrived in Khajuraho by 2:00pm. And after a swift check-in, we had our lunch. After getting refreshed, by 4:00pm, we were ready to go out and explore the temples of Khajuraho.

Honestly, we didn’t know so much about the Group of Temples and in what order to visit them. As we were driving towards the western complex, a guide stopped us. And suggested us to visit the Eastern and Southern Group of Temples today instead. We did the same. And by the time we were done visiting the major temples of the Eastern Temple Complex and Southern Group of Temples in Khajuraho , it was almost 6:00pm. The guide also gave us information on when the Western Temple complex opens the next day in the morning. And then we departed and came back to our rooms. We had an early dinner.

Vamana Temple

Today, some of the major temples that we visited included – Parsvanatha Temple, Brahma Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, Vamana Temple and Duladeo Temple .

Breakfast was included in our hotel room plan, which means we had already pre paid for it. So, we had two choices for the next day. (1) to wake up early in the morning and visit the temple complexes as early as 6:00am in the morning, come back by 8:30am and then have breakfast and checkout for the next destination – Orchha. Or, (2) to wake up little late, have breakfast early at 7:00am and then start for the temple complex by 8:30am, come back to hotel and check out by 11:30am.

The second option was delaying our checkout and thus our road to the next destination. So, we decided to opt for the first one. You can do the same.

Day2 : Visiting Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho and departure

Morning, 5:30am, we woke up, got fresh and started for the Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho by 6:00am. We parked our vehicle in the parking area right in front of main entrance. Although, you have to access it by turning left twice from the road in front of the temple complex.

We bought our tickets and entered the Western Group of Temple Complex . There was hardly anyone at this time inside the temple. We saw a beautiful sunrise and witnessed the first rays of the sun entering the temples in the complex and fall on the idols. This is the reason, we will highly recommend visiting these temples early in the morning.

khajuraho orchha tour

We visited all the temples in the complex including the Lakshmana Temple, Vishvanath Temple, Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Parvati Temple, Jagdambi Temple and Chitragupta Temple .

You can comfortably finish visiting the Western Group of Temples Complex at Khajuraho in 2.5 – 3 hrs. We finished visiting all the temples by 8:15am. And we were back to our hotel by 8:30am. Then, we headed straight for breakfast. After finishing breakfast, we comfortably checked out by 10:00 am and started for the next destination – Orchha.

PS: We followed the above itinerary on our road trip to Madhya Pradesh from Bangalore . Wherein, we reached Khajuraho after doing a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh National Park . And later proceeded to the ancient historical city Orchha.

About the Tour

If you love the rich Indian heritage and its mind-blowing architecture, then the trip to Orchha, and Khajuraho will be among the most memorable trips of your life. Khajuraho Group of Monuments is UNESCO World Heritage. You unfold the stories of brave rulers from history, their beautiful forts, and the temples built by them.

And, how about experiencing this destination during a perfect monsoon? The weather is just pleasant, waterfalls are in full flow, and our rustic heritage contrasts against dark greenery giving us Instagram-worthy shots!

Orchha, one of the finest offbeat travel destinations in the country, is a picturesque town located on the banks of Betwa river in central India. Frozen in time, the grandeur of Orchha’s forts, palaces, temples, and ghats transport us back in time.  The 16th century Bundelkhandi architecture with Mughlai influence tells tales from history through its intricate stone carvings. Chaturbhuj temple dominates the skyline of Orchha while on the other hand, the cenotaphs, when viewed from the other end of the river make a beautiful backdrop during the time of sunset.

Orchha was established as the capital town of mighty Bundela Rajputs, by Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century. The word Orchha means ‘hidden’, hence a suitable place for a Rajput capital. It’s one of the rarest places across the country that has still maintained its ancient glory and magnificence. The very perfect amalgamation of nature and heritage make Orchha an inviting place for all kinds of visitors.

Just a couple of kilometers from Orchha lies the town of Khajuraho, which is famous for being home to one of the most unique temples in the world, formally known as the ‘Khajuraho Group of Monuments’. This group of monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has always caught the attention of people because of the erotic sculptures depicting Kama Sutra in the temples. The temples were built between 950 to 1050 A.D., during Chandela Dynasty, and hence these temples clearly reflect the immense appreciation of Chandela rulers for forbidden art. In fact, some temples also have sculptures of the most revered Gods of Hinduism.

While exploring the architectural beauty of Orchha and Khajuraho, we also get a chance to witness the natural heritage of the Bundelkhandi region. Did you know that Sunset at Kanchana Ghat is so beautiful that it will leave you speechless? We also get to visit Raneh Falls which are in full flow during monsoon and are bound to recharge & rejuvenate the core of your soul.

Let’s set on a journey with a group of wonderful individuals to experience the charm of this old world, enrich ourselves with some interesting facts, and relax away from our noisy metro cities for a few days.

Trip Highlights

khajuraho orchha tour

1. Orchha stay in a traditional resort

Our Orchha resort is a previous hunting lodge, spread over 50 acres. The present resort is an addition to the old construction that dates back to 1895. The resort beautifully overlooks the river Betwa and has verandahs from which the guests can enjoy the view of the flowing waters of the beautiful Betwa River. Its interior design offers a palette of local colors and materials and thus reflects the heritage and glory of the erstwhile Bundela Rulers at Orchha.

Orchha Cenotaphs

2. Orchha Cenotaphs

One can find cenotaphs at countless places in India but the beauty of the Centopahs of Orchha is that they have been built spectacularly on the banks of the Betwa River and boasts of Indo-Mughal architecture. An early evening spent wandering around the cenotaphs followed by a sunset is something one would never forget. The cenotaphs were constructed to be the tombs of the Bundela kings who ruled the Orchha. There are total 14 of them with the cenotaph of  Raja Bir Singh Deo being the most elaborated and the unique one.

Chaturbhuj Temple View

3. Chaturbhuj Temple

Almost 105 meters high, Chaturbhuj Temple is one of tallest, fabulous and the magnificent structures of ancient India. It was built by king Madhukar Shah in between the years 1558 and 1573. The temple houses an idol of Lord Vishnu with four arms but was originally meant for Lord Rama’s idol. It has a complex multi-storied structure which is a blend of the architectural features of temples, forts, and palaces. The temple has tall spires in the shape of pine cones built atop a high platform.

khajuraho orchha tour

4. Laxminarayan Temple

As the name suggests, Laxmi Narayan Temple is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi, but still there is no idol of Goddess kept inside the temple. It’s one of the most interesting and unique temples of Orchha. It exhibits a perfect combination of temple and fort architecture. It has captivating mythological murals and geometrical carvings of scenes from the life of Lord Krishna. It’s one of the preferred places to view a sunset in the town.

Orchha Fort Complex

5. Orchha Fort Complex

It houses a large number of ancient monuments consisting of the fort, palaces, and temple. The most visited landmarks in Orchha Fort Complex are Raj Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Phool Bagh. Raj Mahal used to be the abode of kings and queens until it was abandoned in 1783. The secret passages, murals, and mirror work inside Raj Mahal are fabulous. Jahangir Mahal was built inside the fort in the 17th century to mark Jahangir’s visit to the town. It’s a combination of both Mughal and Bundela architecture. Sheesh Mahal is now a heritage hotel inside Orchha Fort complex offering a royal experience.

Kanchana Ghat Orchha

6. Kanchana Ghat

Words are less to describe the unforgettable beauty of Kanchana ghat. The mesmerizing view of the reflection of cenotaphs (chhatris) in the shimmering waters of Betwa river, when viewed from Kanchana ghat, is worth a hundred photos. It’s an experience and the exquisiteness of this place that shall keep haunting you to return to this place.

Ram Raja Mandir

7. Ram Raja Mandir

Lord Rama arrived in Orchha from Ayodhya in a child form in the lap of Queen Ganesh Kunwari and took his place inside the palace of the queen which is now known as Ram Raja Mandir. It’s the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king. The temple is guarded by police personnel and an armed salutation is offered to Lord Ram every day. Why Lord Ram is worshipped here as a king is an interesting story that we shall discuss during the trip!

8. Western Group of Temples

The western group of temples in Khajuraho houses the maximum, and the most important temples in Khajuraho. The Matangeshwar Temple, and the Kandariya Mahadev Temple both are the largest temples in Khajuraho, both dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Lakshmana temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is located near the Kandariya Mahadeva temple. Devi Jagadambi temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. All the temples in western group are made from pink and yellow sandstone except Kandariya Mahadev Temple and Chausath-Yogini Temple which are made from granite.

Eastern Group of Temples

9. Eastern Group of Temples

Just a couple of hundred meters from the Western group of temples lies the old village of Khajuraho which used to be the home to the Jain Community during the Chandela dynasty. This is also the eastern part of Khajuraho, and hence this place is home to the Jain group of temples which is also known as the Eastern group of temples. It also makes this group of temples quite unique from other temple groups. Adinath Temple and Parsvanatha Temple are one of the most significant temples in the complex.

10. Southern Group of Temples

Southern group of temples in Khajuraho have two major temples which are Dulhadeo Temple, and Chaturbhuj Temple. Did you know that Chaturbhuj temple is the only temple in Khajuraho which doesn’t have any erotic sculptures? It’s also very tall temple, having it’s top raised even above the tree line.

11. Light and Sound Show

The light and sound show at the Orchha Fort transports you back in time, highlighting the rich history and cultural heritage of these majestic places. They come to life after twilight,  illuminating the architectural wonders of the respective places while creating a mesmerizing backdrop for the show. The narration, which is backed by synchronized music and sound effects, transports visitors on a fascinating trip around the heritage’s ramparts, recalling tales of valor, passion, and intrigue.

12. Raneh Falls

Raneh Falls is a magnificent waterfall famous for its beautiful rock formations, which are thought to have formed over millions of years. The falls are located on the Ken River, which runs through the region’s mountainous terrain. Since t he falls are surrounded by a beautiful forest, it adds to the scenery of the location. During the monsoon time, the falls are at their peak, and the surrounding forest also looks stunning green. Hence, monsoon season is the finest time to see the falls since it allows people to fully appreciate the area’s grandeur.

Grandeur of the “Khajuraho- Orchha- Jhansi” circuit

Architectural marvels of central india.

There are gems sprinkled over the jungles of Bundelkhand. Diamonds in Khajuraho, golds in Orchha and silvers all over the place.  If you are a history or architecture lover, or you see poetry in archeological ruins, “Khajuraho- Orchha- Jhansi” circuit is just for you. From my college days only, I had heard a lot about the comparisons between Konark and Khajuraho. When I had the opportunity of actually witnessing the grandeur of the Khajuraho- Orchha and Jhansi circuit, I couldn’t believe my eyes! The architectural beauty was simply extraordinary.

For nature lovers, there are some beautiful landscapes, waterfalls, forests and wildlife to explore as well. However, it’s the architectural marvel of the region that is world famous, especially the UNESCO World Heritage temple sites of Khajuraho. If you are looking for travel tips on this region, this article is your guide to the “Khajuraho- Orchha- Jhansi” circuit.

Read more on similar UNESCO World Heritage Sites in this website, especially about architectural wonders of India:  Hampi  ||  stepwells of India , and from elsewhere in the world:  Stonehenge- Bath  ||  Florence .

"Khajuraho- Orchha- Jhansi" circuit plan

Orchha is about 175 kms from Khajuraho, and Jhansi is just 15 kms away from Orchha. Please refer a guide map of the locations below for convenience. The other two notable places not too far from the circuit are Panna and Shivpuri.

One can complete the trip in less than 3 days- one day each in Khajuraho and Orchha, and half-day in Jhansi. However, architecture/ archeology lovers spend some more time in Khajuraho to slowly explore the large number of temples and a day-trip to Panna national park. You can start the trip either from Jhansi or Khajuraho; both the towns are connected by train routes.

If you don’t have a direct train route to Khajuraho, nearest major junctions are Bhopal, Gwalior, Kota and Kanpur, depending on the direction you are coming from. However, if you are inclined to travel back only by flight, it’s better to start at Jhansi and end in Khajuraho, because there is a small airport with direct flights to some major cities in India.

khajuraho-orchha-circuitmap

However, in this article, we start at Khajuraho, because that is where we had started our trip in July 2011. Travelling from Ahmedabad by train, we had covered Bhopal as well. It was not at all the right time to visit Khajuraho though. Sweltering heat and extremely humid weather made the trip not-so enjoyable. October to March are the best time to plan for this circuit.

City of the Gods:

Persian scholar Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni, who traveled to India in 1017, was so enamoured with Khajuraho that he termed it the “City of the Gods”.  And almost a thousand years later, when I visited Khajuraho, I had the same feeling. So many stunning temples in close proximity to each other, and lying in a forest setting makes the place look really divine.

ganesh-statue-khajuraho

The mystery:

Secluded in the forests of Bundelkhand, it’s a mystery why would the Chandelas (Rajput Kings) chose this place as their capital city in the middle of a forest! And where are the palaces and forts? No trace of any non-religious structure exists in Khajuraho. Doesn’t it sound mysterious! Some believe that the Chandelas had kept politics and religion away from each other. So, they might have had a separate administrative town- Mahoba. But Mahoba became the capital only at a much later period!

kandariya-mahadev-temple-khajuraho

Architectural excellence of the Chandelas:

A religious hub of the Chandelas during the 9 th  century through 12 th  century CE, Khajuraho today is witness to the architectural excellence of an era gone by. Though architectural excellence of the Bundelkhand region goes back to the Gupta rulers in 6 th  century CE, it especially flourished under the Chandelas. They built at least 85 great temples in an area of 20 square kms. These temples were devoted to Hindu Gods (2/3 rd ) and Jainism (1/3 rd ). Of the existing 22 temples, 19 are Hindu temples and the rest are Jain temples.

Khajuraho group of temples are the pinnacle of north Indian Nagara architectural style. All the Hindu temples are built in the traditional Vastu- Purusha- Mandala design, and face the east (for sunrise), except one (Chaturbhuja temple). Considering the richness of architecture, UNESCO has declared the group of temples as a  World Heritage Site  in 1986.  Of the existing temples, prominent ones are the Kandariya Mahadev temple, Laksmana temple, Vamana temple, Adinath temple, and Parshwanath temple.

parshwanath-jain-temple-khajuraho-circuit

The rediscovery:

In the early 12 th  century CE, when the Muslim rulers defeated the Chandelas, they partly destroyed and partly desecrated  these temples. As the temples were a little far from the main city of Khajuraho, some of them survived the wrath of the Armies. But they lost their eminence in course of time. However, historians and travelers have reported about the temples being in use in seclusion by devotees for centuries. In the nineteenth century, a number of successive British officers rediscovered and resurrected the temples and brought them to the eyes of the world. Thus, Khajuraho regained its eminence as a great place of architecture, culture and spirituality.

adinath-temple-khajuraho-circuit

Khajuraho, the inspiration:

Great temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia came up about 200 years later (than Khajuraho) in the 12th century. I guess that  Khajuraho temples might have in certain ways inspired the Angkor Wat temples through the visiting traders and officials of the era. Is there any academic studies to establish any organic relationship between the two? Though Angkor is relatively grander in size, Khajuraho temples are finer, more intricate in design and details.

Uncanny resemblance in history:

Interestingly, there’s an uncanny resemblance between the histories of the two greatest Hindu temples in the world. Invading Armies had sacked both in the 12th century. Both remained oblivion to the outer for over 700 years. After remaining in the wilderness for centuries, Europeans (Khajuraho: British; Angkor: French) rediscovered both of them in the 19th century.

vamana-temple-khajuraho-circuit

Symbol of religious harmony:

Experts have found out that the Hindu and Jain temples were being constructed at about the same time which shows a great degree of religious harmony in those days. Moreover, it depicts how the Chandela rulers practiced the policy of secularism more than a thousand years ago! Indeed, a great lesson for present day governments across the globe.

Khajuraho is not all about eroticism:

People often discuss and quote Khajuraho temples for their erotic sculptures depicting sexual themes, though  there are only about 10% such sculptures.  One of the explanations of such erotic sculptures is that in those days with growing influence of Buddhism, people were turning ascetic. So, the Kings, in order to stop such influence, depicted eroticism as part of sex education for masses at religious places.

However, my interpretation is a bit different. The sculptures depict the whole life cycle of human beings- from birth to death including everyday-activities. It’s but obvious that love and sex are parts of a normal life. Thus, the 10% erotic sculptures represent the ‘recreation’ part of life.

erotic-sculptures-khajuraho

Khajuraho was not the only temple with eroticism:

More importantly, Khajuraho was not the only temple with such sculptures depicting eroticism. Temples built in the same period at Konark  (in  Odisha ) and in south India also had similar sculptures. There is no proof till now if there was a common manual that the architects of the period followed. Or, were the travelers across the regions influenced the sculptures? Or, maybe the Kings and their officials traveled across India and got inspired by such sculptures elsewhere. Whatever it was, most probably there was some common connection.

In any case, don’t get fooled by the numerous vendors selling books depicting Kamasutra. The temples don’t intend to portray Kamasutra in anyway. The vendors are just making a living by selling those books, and they know ‘sex’ sells well!

This debate fascinates me so much that I would like to study this further and write a separate article sometime later.

Raneh Waterfall:

The sheer number of awe-inspiring monuments/ temples in Khajuraho is easy to overwhelm anyone. In order to give respite to your intellectual senses, there’s enough serenity around.

One can easily cover the group of monuments in one day. There is a  waterfall  (called  Raneh ) within a jungle trail nearby (around 20 kms away) which one can cover in the same day, or the next day. The Ken river flowing nearby forms a canyon there. Along the canyon, a series of waterfalls on the granite rock bed make for a wonderful sight.

raneh-falls-khajuraho

Yes, for us, this was the best part of being there in July. The waterfalls were full with monsoon rains and looked really beautiful. Besides, the forests looked lush green.

In case you have more time, or you want to explore wildlife, there’s a Gharial (crocodiles) sanctuary in the downstream.  Panna national park and tiger reserve  is also just 50 kms away. So, wildlife enthusiasts can have a great day-trip.

tourists-khajuraho-orchha-circuit

Though Khajuraho has got its eminence back, Orchha still remains a hidden gem;  most of the tourists still give it a miss . Interestingly enough, ‘Orchha’ means ‘hidden’ in local language. However, the small compact place is no less in terms of heritage and architectural point of view. If Khajuraho was all about temples, Orchha was primarily a seat of power, and was more diverse with palaces, forts and temples.

{More such offbeat destinations:  Maheshwar  |||  Gagron fort .}

orchha-landscape

King Rudra Pratap Singh and his successors of the Bundela dynasty had built the city in early sixteenth century CE as their new capital. Situated  on the bank of river Betwa,  Orchha group of monuments look absolutely majestic.

We walked around the most important monuments- Orchha fort complex, Jahangir Mahal, Royal Cenotaphs (Chhatris), Rama Raja temple, Chaturbhuja temple and Lakshmi temple. It was peak of summer; so, the walk was never going to be easy, but we did manage somehow.

orchha-circuit

I remember walking over a small bridge across the Betwa river to go to the other side. From there we had a stunning view of the monuments overlooking the flowing river.

Sitting on the big boulders sprinkled across the river bank and playing with the water had a calming effect on us. It was such a respite from the sweltering heat and high humidity! Besides, one can choose to take a boat ride in the river from the jetty in front of the royal cenotaphs (chhatris).

betwa-river-orchha

Jahangir Mahal:

Orchha fort complex includes two main palaces- Raja Mahal and the Jahangir Mahal. Though fresco painting in Raja Mahal is really special, I liked the architecture of Jahangir Mahal more than Raja Mahal’s.

Jahangir Mahal, built in the Indo-Islamic architectural style, was named after the Mughal King Jahangir whose mother was a Rajput Princess. After the completion of the palace, King Bir Singh Deo had invited Jahangir to the palace and Jahangir had spent a night there.

jahangir-mahal-orchha-circuit

Interestingly, they never used the Jahangir Mahal  for regular residence purpose  again after Jahangir’s visit. Rather, guests of the king and other important officials used to stay here during their visits.

Within the fort complex, you will see an impressive heritage hotel- Sheesh Mahal, which was actually, the queen’s abode in those days.

One can enjoy a light-and-sound show at the palace in the evening; but unfortunately, we couldn’t attend the same.

jahangir-mahal-orchha

Temples of Orchha:

Orchha is not only about palaces, its temples are equally grand. Though there are a number of beautiful temples in Orchha, we liked three of them especially- the Chaturbhuja temple, the Rama Raja temple and  Laxmi temple .

chaturbhuja-temple-orchaa

There is an interesting story behind the construction of Chaturbhuja temple and Rama Raja temple. When queen Ganeshkuwari requested the King Madhukar Shah to construct a temple for his favorite god Rama, he agreed instantly. While construction was on, the queen went to Ayodhya, the birth place of Lord Rama to bring an idol of Rama. After coming back, she kept it in her palace till the temple would be ready.

However, once the temple was ready, they realized that an idol kept in a palace cannot be enshrined in a temple. So, Chaturbhuja temple got another idol of Lord Vishnu later. Lord Rama’s idol was kept in another temple in the palace campus only, named as the Rama Raja temple. It’s the only temple where devotees worship Rama as a King, and not a God!

rama-raja-temple-orchha

Laxmi Temple:

Architecturally unique, Laxmi  temple is a masterpiece of Bir Singh Deo’s legacy. (See below) Doesn’t it look more like a fort/ palace than a temple?

Even though it’s a Laxmi temple, we didn’t see any idol of the goddess inside! Maybe they have shifted the idol to somewhere else. Like the Raja Mahal, inside walls of the temple have very rich paintings.

Laxmi-Temple-orchha

Anyone visiting Khajuraho must plan a day in Orchha. However, it’s a pity that very few tourists visit this amazing place. We noticed that there were more foreign tourists in Orchha than Indian tourists! Foreign tourists, it seems, do their research well before visiting a place.

Jhansi is well worthy of being included in the Khajuraho- Orchha circuit.  Just about 15 kms from Orchha lies Jhansi, across the border in Uttar Pradesh.

Jhansi was part of the kingdom of the Chandela Rajput Kings between 9 th  – 12 th  century, and lost significance with the decline of the Chandelas. King Bir Singh Deo (Bundela king who also built the Jahangir Mahal in Orchha) revived the fortunes of Jhansi and built the Jhansi fort in 1613.

It rose to such a prominence that in the 18 th  century, it became the capital of the Maratha empire. In later period, it became part of the British empire and the Gwalior state. In 1857, Jhansi was home to the first Indian War of Independence led by Rani Laxmibai.

jhansi-fort

Jhansi fort and Rani Mahal:

Situated on a hill top, Jhansi fort is impressively built in the north Indian architectural style. It sprawls over 15 acres of land with 10 entry gates. It will take 2-3 hours to explore the fort. Learn how in 1857, Rani Laxmibai got enraged with the British policy- “Doctrine of Lapse” and waged a war against the mighty empire. It proved to be the first uprising against the British, and inspired more such efforts in later period. Besides, do notice the point where Laxmibai had incredibly jumped off the fort on a horseback!

rani-mahal-jhansi

Once you are done with Jhansi fort, head to Rani Mahal in close proximity. Once the residence of Rani Laxmibai, now it is a low-key museum. One doesn’t need much time to spend here, but a sense of history will keep you interested. If you are a history-buff, there is another government museum in Jhansi to explore.

After witnessing glorious heritage of the medieval central-India, leave for your home from Jhansi with a sense of enrichment.

Concluding Thoughts

Though Khajuraho- Orchha- Jhansi circuit is one of the finest travel circuits in India, it’s not proportionately popular among tourists. In fact, we saw more foreigners than Indians in Khajuraho and Orchha!

The “Khajuraho-Orchha-Jhansi” circuit will leave you in awe of the glorious architectural past of India. One wishes we had more real historical texts available on Khajuraho and Orchha circuit. But unfortunately, Indians didn’t have a great appetite for recording events in those days! Though we did have good oral traditions, they tend to be intermixed with local myths and hearsay, thereby diminishing their reliability factor.
