8. Phuket, Thailand

This island in southern Thailand, which is just an hour flight from Bangkok, is surrounded by the Andaman Sea, so white sandy beaches abound. If a stunning sunset is what you’re after, head to Promthep Cape, the southernmost point on the island and a popular spot for photo-ops. For views of the island and beyond, climb to the top of the massive alabaster statue called Big Buddha.

Though Rome’s historic significance cannot be overstated, don’t assume that this Italian city is stuck in the past. On the contrary, you’ll find posh storefronts and luxurious hotels not far from iconic structures like the Pantheon (built in 120 AD) and the Colosseum (built in 80 AD).

3. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Don’t write off the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora just because of its size. Though it’s a little more than 2 miles wide and just 6 miles long, Bora Bora packs in an abundance of natural beauty. To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Because of its remoteness, flying into Bora Bora Airport will be quite a journey, no matter where you're departing from. But you'll forget everything as soon as you see this Polynesian paradise that is beautiful beyond words.

Hot tip: Though Bora Bora can be wildly expensive to visit, you can cut costs by visiting between December and March (though you should avoid the Christmas holiday) and by bringing your own alcohol and sunscreen with you.

Fun fact: Bora Bora is one of the countries that no longer exists . The Kingdom of Bora Bora was an independent state until it was forcefully overtaken and annexed by France in 1888.

History lovers often flock to Savannah and Charleston to marvel at old buildings and ancient trees, but those cities are practically babies compared to St. Augustine. Founded in 1565, this Spanish-influenced city shines with its ​​colonial architecture and old brick streets—not to mention historic treasures like Flagler College and the imposing Castillo de San Marcos—but the drinking and dining scenes here are totally modern. Be sure to grab some sunset cocktails at The Reef (preferably after surfing at Vilano Beach.)

After a pandemic that found many of us escaping to the great outdoors, readers continue to be drawn to Aspen. It’s home to some of the best ski slopes in the US—and some of the best resorts, too. The Little Nell is a popular choice for ski-in-ski-out; you can also stay at The St. Regis Aspen Resort , only a three-minute walk from the base of Aspen Mountain. And while some of its beloved clichés (think expensive cars and neon bikinis) can still be found, the Magic City is so much more than a party destination. Art lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to museums ( Pérez Art Museum Miami is a stand-out), while travelers seeking chic cafes and vinyl shops will feel right at home in the Wynwood Arts District .

9. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. may have finally shed its buttoned-up reputation. Yes, we're still riding the high from the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture , designed by world-renowned British-Ghanian architect David Adjaye. But then came the smartly revitalized Wharf, with its can't-miss waterfront views, and the arrival of hotel Eaton , which prioritizes activism instead of pillow mints—not to mention the city’s stylish Airbnbs. Suddenly, we can't seem to get enough of the place. Something's brewing in D.C., and it's not just the craft beer.

8. Nashville

A southern city with a small-town feel, you might find that a weekend isn’t enough to get all you can out of Nashville . Music City is known for its legendary honky tonks on Lower Broadway, but be sure to take time away from the buzz of the strip to explore the city’s shops and restaurants . You’ve likely heard of Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack , but also stop into Hatch Show Print , which has been creating show posters for Nashville’s biggest venues for more than 140 years, to check out their vintage letterpress machinery and take home a piece of Nashville history.

For one of the oldest cities in the US, Boston sure has aged with style. To get a quick refresher on our nation’s history, walk the Freedom Trail , a 2.5-mile route along a string of historic sites that takes you through the country’s founding. Other activities worth adding to your itinerary include slurping up oysters at Neptune , visiting the eclectic salon-style art display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , and catching a ball game at Fenway Park . Just be sure to learn the words to “Sweet Caroline” before you go.

5. San Francisco

While San Francisco is on the small side for a major city, at just 49 square miles, it packs a punch. Yes, there’s Alcatraz and the famed Golden Gate Bridge , but you could also spend a whole day wandering through the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or discovering street art in the character-filled Mission District. Treat yourself to some pampering at one of the city’s fantastic spas , or head north and take in the majesty of the redwoods in Muir Woods . So much more than just a day trip from Chicago , Milwaukee has many (if not all) of the same qualities that make other cities on this list buzz—and then some. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city’s surprisingly eco-diverse location makes it a hotbed of locavore cuisine. A spate of award-winning restaurants have helped Milwaukee shed its beer-and-cheer reputation, though you can still get your fill of both between fine dinners. The dedicated revitalization of neighborhoods such as the historic Third Ward and Lincoln Village has also kept visitors busy with specialty shops, galleries, and more creative businesses.

2. San Diego

Several years ago, travelers headed to San Diego might have wondered what they would do in the city, besides hitting the beaches . No longer. You probably didn’t know that Milwaukee holds the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest , over three consecutive weekends in June and July. When the massive festival goes down, the pretty city by Lake Michigan goes more than a little crazy. With 12 stages, over 600 artists and more than half a million fans rolling through, they're taking advantage of the warm weather in a big way. During the rest of the year, think cheese curds, beer breweries, cornhole tournaments and Packers fanatics, juxtaposed with a gorgeous art museum and the annual Sculpture Milwaukee outdoor showcase all over town (summer/fall). It’s a vibrant, friendly city that Harley-Davidson calls home—don’t miss their massive museum here.

8.  Salt Lake City, UT

No matter where you are in Salt Lake City, the snowcapped Rocky Mountains are never out of sight. They tower over the uber-clean city, a stunning landscape fit for a painting. And while Salt Lake is well-known for its Mormon heritage, there's more to the scene here than meets the eye. Restaurants range from the fine-dining favorite Log Haven to a healthy variety of ethnic and international restaurants. And while alcohol isn't as readily available here as in some cities, it's much easier to find than you think, including at the White Horse  downtown. While there, don't forget to take in a little of the outdoors: hiking, swimming, and picnicking at the Great Salt Lake is a good place to start.

Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, deep-dish pizza, and the Cubbies: just three of the wonderful things that put Chicago on the world’s radar. It’s a big city with a friendly vibe that’s got a whole street, Rush Street, devoted to drinking and dancing. You can party there until 4am, but save some strength for the festivals this city loves to put on, from  Taste of Chicago  in the summer and July's  Pitchfork Music Fest to the big daddy of them all, Lollapalooza . This oh-so-cold city hunkers down in the winter, unless the Bears are playing football, in which case shirtless guys will brave subzero temps to cheer on their boys at Soldier Field.

10.  Los Angeles, CA

Sun, sand, and movies (in which the city is often the star) make Los Angeles a place the world wants to see in real life. Start at the Hotel Erwin’s rooftop in Venice for an expansive view of the whole city, then explore everything from the ocean to the mountains as you crisscross L.A. County. Expect its famous traffic to slow you down as you head to Malibu for a surfing session; make a pit stop at the Getty Museum , then step in the stars’ footprints at TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood . Blow your shopping budget on Rodeo Drive , then head south to Anaheim to pilot the Millenium Falcon at Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge universe.

11.  Nashville, TN

Honky-tonks and museums might not seem to go together, but their marriage in Nashville is a strong one indeed. For some drinking and dancing, head straight for Broadway, where Legend’s Corner , Nudie’s , and Tootsie’s have been serving up country, blues, and whiskey forever. You can start early (10am) and go late into the night (3am) in Music City—if you’ve got the fortitude, of course. Is day drinking not your idea of vacation fun? Start with the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum  and move on to the museums devoted to Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash ; all are right downtown and terrific. See Historic RCA Studio B , where Elvis made countless records, and drive out to the Bluebird Cafe and the Grand Ole Opry . Don’t forget that this is a party town so feel free to visit with a group, rent a barcycle (which is exactly what it sounds like), and roam among the best Nashville bars , singing as you go.

One of America’s most beautiful cities, stately Washington, D.C. just keeps getting better. The National Mall is truly majestic, with the Capitol building glowing at one end, the Lincoln Memorial at the other, and various Smithsonian museums lining each side. Classic old buildings exist shoulder-to-shoulder with new ultra-modern architecture like those in Hudson Yards , constantly morphing the city’s identity into exciting new molds. When in town, indulge in more than one Broadway show , visit all the museums , stroll around Central Park , eat the best bagels in NYC (and any drool-worthy haute cuisine you can manage), drink at a speakeasy , catch a Yankee game, and start wondering why you haven’t moved here yet.

It’s not a myth: San Diego boasts the very best weather across America, with 70-degree Fahrenheit temperatures, low humidity, and sunny skies all year round. Add in the beautiful bay and beaches, a famous zoo and the endearing madness of Comic-Con International, and it’ll become impossible not to love this quintessential California city. Foodies adore the seafood and Mexican cuisine done to perfection here; gamblers flock to Pechanga and Viejas , the two posh Native American casinos nearby; and kids dream of Legoland . San Diego has something for everyone.

Ah, Vegas. The place that every foreigner cannot wait to visit when seeing America. More lightbulbs in one place than anywhere, more ways to gamble than your wallet can bear, the glitter, glitz, and jangling slot machines are the city’s signature perks. But Vegas is more than just casinos rising out of the desert. Head off the famed Strip to downtown’s fascinating Mob Museum and find out who built this decadent mecca in the first place. Eat at a world-class chef’s world-renowned restaurant ( Joël Robuchon , anyone?), drive supercars at 200mph with Exotics Racing and zip out to Red Rock Canyon for a mind-bending desert experience. Whatever you want, Vegas always has it.

With theme parks like Universal Studios Florida, Legoland  and Walt Disney World , Orlando has been the place for families for generations. And now, with the arrival of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World, there will be plenty of adults with no kids descending on Orlando as well. The city is ready, with an impressive range of restaurants anchored by DoveCote Brasserie and The Boheme  and an equally adult club scene that pays homage all sorts of tunes, from country and hip hip to rock and pop.

Quite often I am asked whether I’m a ‘city girl’ or a ‘country girl’…. truth is, I think I’m a bit of both. Sometimes there’s nothing like a countryside escape – wide open space, clean air, friendly locals… but after a while I tend to crave a city escape. Here are my picks for the top cities you must visit once in your lifetime!

25. salzburg, austria.

Salzburg is home to the Sound of Music and the mozartkugel. It is also one of the most popular cities in Austria to visit. This city has such a fairytale appeal – it sometimes feels as if you are walking through a real-life postcard! You will need at least a few days to see all Salzburg has to offer, plus be sure to visit Vienna on your Austrian adventure.

24. Venice, Italy

Ahhh, Venice. The city of canals is built on water and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Save this one for your one true love, it’s a magic spot to share with that special someone.

23. Dubai, UAE

Dubai has literally popped up out of nowhere with the world’s biggest and best of almost everything – the tallest building in the world, the world’s most luxurious hotel, you name it… Dubai has it or has it being built. Be sure to venture beyond the city to the nearby desert for a more authentic insight into Emirati culture.

Charleston has been dubbed to behold the friendliest people in the USA – and it’s true! This Southern city in South Carolina is one of the best places to visit if you want to encounter Southern hospitality.

21. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is a fairytale city that literally looks as if it belongs in a picture book. And as the most charming town in all of Belgium, you absolutely must include it in your travel plans! This city is best experienced on foot, without a plan or final destination. Be sure to indulge in a hot chocolate in the old town square, which makes for a great booster in the colder months.

Krakow is a fascinating city with so much history and charm to offer visitors. Don’t miss a day trip to Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps to understand the sheer terror that once swept through this country and others during WWII.

Amsterdam is hands down one of my favourite cities in Europe. And it isn’t hard to see why! This city is not only one of the most charming cities due to its character and being positioned on the canals, but it is also incredibly fun. Be sure to explore this city on foot or even better, make your way onto the water and experience the canals.

The Danes are a very polite bunch so don’t expect outrageous partying, outgoing locals, or anything ‘out of the ordinary’. However Copenhagen itself is a beautiful city to visit at least once in your lifetime.

Ahhh, the eternal city. There’s no place like Rome and of course when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

12. Istanbul, Turkey

Partly in Europe and partly in Asia, Istanbul is an exciting blend of cultures where East meets West. There’s so much history here it is almost unmissable and should certainly be on your agenda.

11. Berlin, Germany

Germany’s capital has more history than you can comprehend even after spending weeks in the city. It’s a great place to base yourself as well as you are essentially in the centre of Europe.

10. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague has quickly become a popular spot for travellers from all over the world and one look explains why. This is one of Europe’s most interesting cities that has really opened up to mass tourism.

9. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is renowned around the world for being one of the most beautiful cities to visit, thanks to it’s city-meets-the-sea appeal.

8. Florence, Italy

The capital of Tuscany is also the capital of gelato – more than enough reason to visit!

7. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Mass crowds descended on Rio for the World Cup in 2014 and as such it has quickly become a hot spot to visit. Be sure to venture elsewhere in the continent as South America truly has so much to offer.

6. Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is the perfect excuse to dabble in something a little different – there’s so much culture and tradition to immerse yourself in that it is impossible to say you are a seasoned traveller without visiting this super unique city!

5. St Petersburg, Russia

St Petersburg is by far my favourite city in Russia. There’s the history of the Tsars and once being the capital of Russia, as well as some very friendly locals to ease your way into travelling through Russia.

4. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is undeniably one of Europe’s most underrated cities – if not the most underrated. One visit here and you will soon understand why – as well as already be planning your return!

3. London, UK

There’s no other city quite like London – and it should go without saying that you simply must visit once in your lifetime. After visiting all the tourist hot spots, be sure to venture off into the neighbourhoods to completely rediscover the city!

2. Paris, France

Paris…. a girl’s dream. The croissants, crepes, baguettes… yes, this is Paris. You will be in love.

Whether you're a nature lover looking for wide open spaces and snow-covered peaks or a culture fiend who can't get enough of museums and galleries, the USA has something for you. To help stem the overwhelm of options, these are our 12 favorite places to visit in the USA in 2024.

Paddle through the coastal estuaries and camp among mangroves, or whiz through the numerous waterways via airboat. All the while, keep your eyes peeled for wading birds, manatees, and of course, alligators and crocodiles.

Planning tip: For the best experience, come prepared for the elements: sunscreen and bug spray are essentials.

12. Southwestern Utah

Best for geology lovers

If you want to visit one place in the US that sums up the grandiosity of its natural history, southwestern Utah is the place to go. Home to five of the country's most spectacular national parks, Red Rock Country puts the region's geological past on display with a dazzling amount of artistic flair. Hike the peaks and valleys of Zion and Bryce Canyon , or marvel at the crimson, ochre and amber palette in the cliffs and canyons of Capitol Reef and Canyonlands . And if you want a special treat, watch the sun rise over the sandstone masterpieces at Arches .

Rawalpindi: The Ancient City

Rawalpindi, commonly known as Pindi, is the capital city of Rawalpindi District in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Rawalpindi is the fourth largest city in Pakistan, and Islamabad-Rawalpindi, the largest metropolitan area, is also the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country. The city of Rawalpindi is adjacent to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Due to the close social and economic relations between the two cities, the two cities are known as the “Twin Cities.”

Rawalpindi is located on the Potohar plateau and is famous for its ancient Buddhist heritage, especially the neighboring UNESCO World Heritage city of Taxila. The city was destroyed during Mahmud of Ghazni’s conquest and subsequently captured by the Gakhars in 1493. The Gakhar rulers were defeated in 1765, and the city fell under Sikh rule. Eventually, it became an important city within the Sikh Empire, with its capital at Lahore. 

The city was captured by British India in 1849 and became the largest garrison city for the British Indian Army in 1851. After the partition of British India in 1947, the city became the headquarters of the Pakistan Army, thus retaining its status as a major military city.

The construction of Pakistan’s new capital, Islamabad, in 1961 led to increased investment in the city. It briefly served as the country’s capital before its completion. Modern Rawalpindi is closely connected socially and economically to Islamabad and the urban areas. 

The city also has several suburban housing projects that provide bedroom communities for Islamabad workers. Home to the Pakistan Army Headquarters and Benazir Bhutto International Airport and connected to the M-1 and M-2 highways, Rawalpindi is a major logistics and transportation hub in northern Pakistan. The city is also home to historic temples and Havelis and serves as a tourist hub for visits to Rohtas Fort , Azad Kashmir , Taxila , and Gilgit-Baltistan .

Seven Tehsil of Rawalpindi District 

Rawalpindi city:  

It is a city in the northern region of Punjab Province, Pakistan, and the fourth largest city in Pakistan. The area covers 5,286 square kilometres (2,041 square miles). It was part of the Rawalpindi Division until the division was abolished in 2000. It is located on the southern slope of the northwest section of the Himalayas. It has vast mountains, fertile river valleys, and crisscrossed mountains and rivers.

The major rivers are the Indus and Jhelum, and their climatic characteristics are beneficial to health. Rawalpindi is the administrative headquarters of Rawalpindi district. The city area includes seven autonomous districts. Rawalpindi is the military headquarters of the Pakistan Armed Forces.

Reviving the Glory of Rawalpindi (Ancient City)

The full name of Rawalpindi Municipal Government is Rawalpindi City Administration. Rawal is the main city of Rawalpindi. The major shopping malls and bazaars are Raja Bazar, Kashmiri Bazar, Sarafa Bazar, Kohati Bazar, Mochi Bazar, Rehmanabad, Satellite Town, Commercial Market, and Tench Bhatta.

Gujjar Khan. 

Gujjar Khan is located in the heart of the Potohar district and is also known as the land of martyrs. The region has nurtured talents from all walks of life. Two of the beneficiaries of Nishan Haider are from Gujjar Khan. The region is also known for producing many top military experts.

A short drive away lies Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site boasting a rich history dating back to the 6th century BC. Explore the ruins of ancient Buddhist monasteries and universities and step back in time amidst the remnants of a glorious civilization.

Taxila is famous for its UET Taxila and the Taxila Historical Museum. Kotli Sattian. 

Kotli Satian Tehsil has the highest mountain range in Rawalpindi region after Murree.

Kahuta is a beautiful place with many mountains, stunning views, snow-capped mountains, forests, flowing rivers, a cool climate with hot summers, more rain, cool and cold winters, different types of wildlife, and different tribespeople from the public. Live off the land and raise livestock. According to the 1998 Pakistan Census, the population of Kahuta was 153,000. Satis is a celebrity in the area.

Kallar Khar.

 Kallar Sidan became the seventh tehsil of Rawalpindi in 2007. This is a very promising area, inhabited by people of various tribes. During the construction of Mangla Dam, many residents of the area around Mangla Dam migrated to Kalar Sedan, making Kalar a hotspot for new technology development.

The fort’s impregnable walls, with 12 massive gates and 68 bastions, speak volumes about the excellent military architecture of that era.

Construction of the fort took a mere eight years, a testament to the efficiency and skill involved. The massive scale is impressive: over 4 kilometres in circumference, with towering walls that reach up to 12 meters high.

These formidable walls are lined with 68 bastions, each strategically placed for optimal defence. Twelve monumental gateways, each elaborately decorated, provided controlled access points. The use of local red sandstone adds a distinctive beauty to the fort’s structure. It’s a captivating reminder of the power struggles and architectural prowess of the 16th century.

Kartarpura Food Street 

Head straight to Kartarpura Food Street! This historic lane is a foodie wonderland. It’s been serving up deliciousness since way before Pakistan was even a thing, and you can still feel the echoes of its past in the architecture.

Italy’s capital city is a globally renowned cultural and historical powerhouse, boasting everything from ancient ruins and tranquil parks to Michelin-starred restaurants. Here, you'll find the most important relic from the Roman Empire (the Colosseum), some of Michelangelo's greatest works (in the Sistine Chapel), an 18th century Baroque-style fountain (the Trevi Fountain) and, of course, the center of Catholicism (Vatican City). Other can’t-miss tourist attractions in the Eternal City include the Pantheon, the Roman Forum and St. Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest church.

Situated in the scenic Tuscan valley, Florence woos travelers with old-world avenues leading to picturesque piazzas big and small. While you're soaking up the city's splendor, make sure to stop by the Piazza del Duomo, where the breathtaking Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral is located, and the romantic Ponte Vecchio, a 14th century bridge overlooking the Arno River. Once central to the Renaissance movement, Florence also offers art aficionados the opportunity to see famous pieces by Michelangelo and other iconic artists of that period. As an added bonus, Florence is ideal for a daytrip to the Chianti wine region.

The journey to the cliff-side Amalfi Coast involves heart-stopping, hairpin turns on narrow roads, but travelers agree this is part of the fun. For centuries, this small island off the coast of southern Italy has attracted plenty of famous faces, from emperors to movie stars, due to its gorgeous scenery. Some of Capri's most amazing sights are best seen by boat, including the Faraglioni rock formations and the Blue Grotto, where sunlight turns the water into an unbelievably vivid shade of blue. On land, the Gardens of Augustus and Villa Jovis, an imperial palace, also provide spectacular views. Meanwhile, in the town center, visitors will find high-end shops and restaurants where they can relax after a long day of sightseeing.

Considered the land of the sirens in Greek mythology, Sorrento continues to lure people with its charm and stunning views. Here, vacationers can explore enchanting piazzas or relax near the water before watching the sun set behind the cliffs. Plus, lemons are big in Sorrento – both in size and in popularity – and the area is known as one of the best places in the world to taste authentic limoncello, a lemon-flavored liquor. It's also the perfect base for daytrips and boat tours to nearby Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and other popular Italian locales.

Italy's second-largest city is best known for its high fashion, playing host to Milan Fashion Week each winter and home to iconic fashion houses including Giorgio Armani, Prada and Versace. Visitors can peruse such high-end brands at the dazzling Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade. Located about 30 miles from Verona, Lake Garda tends to be more approachable and wallet-friendly (if a bit more touristy) than Lake Como. Activities in this recreational hot spot include swimming and windsurfing, as well as hiking and taking a funicular to Mount Baldo. Lake Garda also attracts families with Gardaland Resort, which includes themed hotels as well as an amusement park, water park and aquarium. If you're looking to get away from the crowds, go beyond the main tourist sites to the quieter northern side of the lake, where you'll find the highest mountains and tucked-away towns.

If you're looking for Italy without the crowds, Tuscany is really all it's cracked up to be. Italy's famous countryside offers travelers spectacular landscapes dotted with romantic villas and castles equipped with wineries and superb restaurants. Don’t miss out on a visit to the walled city of San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its medieval towers. What's more, Tuscan locales like Pisa (which offers much more than its leaning tower) and Siena are an easy drive from top destinations such as Bologna and Cinque Terre, perfect for daytrippers who don't want to stay in one place for too long.

Assisi, a medieval town with religious connections, sits on a hilltop in the lush landscapes of Umbria, just more than 100 miles north of Rome. This peaceful town's biggest draws are its sights dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, one of Italy's patron saints, including the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses his tomb as well as colorful frescos, and The Woods of San Francesco. Beyond its religious heritage, Assisi is worth a visit for its picturesque streets and sweeping views, while its location also makes it ideal for a truffle hunting excursion or wine tasting tour.

As the location of several ancient Greek legends, Sicily has an almost mythical quality. Once you visit for yourself, you'll see why so many writers were inspired by this island, which happens to be the largest in the Mediterranean. Be enchanted by Sicily's crystal-clear waters and golden beaches. Marvel at Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, or try hiking up it in summer or skiing down it in winter. Also save time for taking in the many cultures that have called this island home at its various cathedrals and archaeological sites.

This former Roman city in southern Italy is equal parts chilling and impressive. Pompeii was left almost completely intact after it was buried in ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Its astonishingly well-preserved ruins now provide present-day visitors a glimpse into what life was like during ancient times. True history buffs might also enjoy a trip to nearby Herculaneum, another city that was preserved by the same eruption, while more adventurous explorers should consider hiking to the top of Mount Vesuvius for jaw-dropping panoramas of the Bay of Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula.

Best known for its Shakespeare ties, Verona appeals to fans of "Romeo and Juliet" with themed tours of the sights that allegedly inspired the play. But there is more to this city than its literary link. Verona, located about 15 miles east of Lake Garda, is also home to several impressive attractions and historic buildings (the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after all). Travelers won't want to miss the Arena di Verona, a first-century Roman amphitheater that is still in use, and Giardino Giusti, a beautifully sculpted Renaissance garden.

Sardinia provides the best of both worlds. Costa Smeralda is all about luxury, with its lush beaches and coves overlooking yacht-filled waters. And away from all of the glitz and glamour of Costa Smeralda, you'll find a more laid-back side of the island, including small medieval towns where Sardinians still practice sheepherding and wear traditional clothing. What's more, Sardinia features several ancient ruins, such as UNESCO World Heritage-listed Su Nuraxi di Barumini.

If you really want to treat yourself on your next vacation, Lake Como is where you want to be. Here, opulent villas and hotels line the shores and sandy beaches beckon to sun seekers. You'll see sleek sailboats and speedboats coasting in the middle of the lake, which is the perfect place to admire the region's surrounding hills. Meanwhile, for a lesson in luxury, tour one of the region’s grand villas; top picks among travelers include Villa Melzi d’Eril, Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello. Later, check out the Como Cathedral, a magnificent structure boasting Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles.

The small, crescent-shaped village of Portofino is known as a vacation hot spot for the rich and famous. The water surrounding Portofino is often filled with yachts and is great for swimming and diving. Plus, the area's beauty and tranquil atmosphere make it an excellent place to unwind. When travelers need a break from relaxing, they can venture just outside of Portofino to check out historical sites like Castello Brown, an ancient military fortress with incredible views of the Marina di Portofino, and Abbazia di San Fruttuoso, a 10th century monastery that can only be reached by foot or ferry.

Thought to have been inhabited 12,000 years ago, Matera is one of the world's oldest continually occupied towns. Located in the Basilicata region in southern Italy, just west of Puglia, Matera's distinguishing features are its sassi (cave dwellings), which were inhabited until the 1950s. While here, look out for the many viewpoints, called belvederes, for a glimpse of the breathtaking cliffside. Visit Sasso Caveoso for the Casa Grotta cave house (inhabited until 1957) and the Santa Maria de Idris, a rupestrian church carved from the rocky landscape. Meanwhile, in Sasso Barisano – the oldest part of the city – you'll find modern comforts like hotels, restaurants and shops.

There are several reasons why Bologna, the capital of northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is often called "la dotta, la grassa e la rossa" ("the learned, the fat and the red"). For one, it's home to the oldest university in Europe, the University of Bologna. The city is also a food lover's dream thanks to its world-renowned cuisine, which includes Italian staples like tortellini and lasagna Bolognese. Bologna even features a gelato university and the food-themed amusement park, FICO Eataly World. Plus, the city boasts an array of terra cotta-roofed medieval buildings, including a pair of leaning towers.

Located in the northwest corner of Italy, Turin is the perfect city break brimming with grand architecture, museums and delightful cuisine. Must-visit attractions include Mole Antonelliana (a former synagogue turned into a cinema museum), the 16th-century Royal Palace of Turin and the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum). Once you've toured the top sights, settle into local life by enjoying the city's riverside parks, street markets, football games and historic cafes. At the latter, you'll find unique coffee blends and decadent chocolate, as well as elaborate aperitif hours. One of my favorite things about traveling is trying out local food. I always research the best places and can-not-miss dishes in each city I visit.

Recently, a Dutch lifestyle magazine, Dailybase, used information from Tripadvisor to compile a list of the best foodie cities in Europe. This study used 193 European cities and measured how many restaurants in those cities have 5-star reviews.

My favorite spot didn’t make the list (Istanbul); let’s see if your favorite foodie city made it!

The bustling metropolis of London tops our list with an impressive 2,906 5-star Tripadvisor reviews. A melting pot of cultures, London’s food scene offers an eclectic mix of traditional British fare and international cuisine. Fish and chips remain a must-try, with The Golden Chippy in Greenwich receiving rave reviews for its crispy batter and perfectly cooked fish.

London’s culinary scene is as diverse as its population, offering everything from Michelin-starred dining experiences to historic pubs serving traditional British fare. Beyond the classic fish and chips, London is celebrated for its vibrant street food markets, such as Borough Market, where food lovers can explore flavors from around the globe.

The city’s innovation in gastronomy is paralleled by its commitment to sustainability and organic produce, making it a dynamic and continually evolving food capital.

Paris, the city of love, is a close second with 2,898 reviews. It is equally a city of gastronomic delights. Renowned for its patisseries and boulangeries, no visit is complete without indulging in a croissant . Du Pain et des Idées is an excellent choice for sampling what many consider the pinnacle of French baking.

Paris, often considered the heart of culinary sophistication, is a city where food is not just eaten but celebrated. From the flakiest croissants at sunrise to the most refined Michelin-starred experiences at night, Parisian cuisine is about excellence in simplicity.

The city’s bistros and cafes are not just places to eat but institutions where the art of dining is practiced with reverence. Paris’s dedication to preserving its culinary heritage while embracing innovation makes every meal an enjoyable experience.

My favorite place in Rome is Tonnarello, located in Trastevere; I recommend the Tonnarello Carbonara and the fried artichoke (my favorite thing we ate in all of Italy!)

Souvlaki , a simple yet delicious fast food, is a must-try. Kostas Souvlaki in Plaka is one of the best restaurants in the city. It serves perfectly grilled meat and homemade tzatziki.

Athens marries its rich history with a lively modern food scene where ancient flavors meet contemporary culinary techniques. Greek cuisine, emphasizing fresh vegetables, olive oil, and grilled meats, is best in Athens’s bustling tavernas and chic eateries.

The city’s street food offers a quick and delicious insight into the flavors that have shaped Greek cuisine for millennia.

I can’t count how many Greek Salads I ate while we were in Greece, but yum!

Madrid’s 1,395 reviews highlight its status as a culinary capital. The city’s tapas bars are legendary, with Casa Alberto offering traditional Spanish tapas that have delighted locals and visitors since 1827.

Madrid’s culinary scene is as lively and varied as its art and culture. The city thrives on its tapas culture, where dining is a communal affair meant to be enjoyed over hours. Beyond tapas, Madrid is home to various regional Spanish cuisines, reflecting the country’s diverse culinary landscape.

Like Mercado de San Miguel, the city’s markets provide a vibrant snapshot of Spain’s rich gastronomic heritage.
