Kodanad is a village on the banks of Periyar river. Originally, this place was used by the King of Travancore to train wild elephants from the forests to interact in a friendly and co operative way with humans. Now Kodanad is a government controlled elephant sanctuary and training centre where you see male and females and adorable calves. History: In the 1950s, Kodanad used to be the largest of several elephant training centres for captured Elephants from the adjoining forest regions. In the 1970s, there was a ban to elephant capture by Government of India and from then on, Kodanad is primarily used as a rescue training center. Here, Elephants were trained by skilled people also known as ‘Paappaan’ in Malayalam language. Though capturing Elephants are banned now, Kodanad has just become the training centre for elephants so as to be used in the safaris. These elephants are trained perfectly for riding and heavy works like exploring the jungles, transporting logs of woods from one place to another. The animals from Kodanad elephant centre including the elephants have been recently rehabilitated to Kaprikkad, as the part of Ecotourism project named as Abhayaranyam, which is spread across 200 acres of natural forest.

Day Tour Kochi – Attractions

There are many walkways alongside the river and they offer a unique experience to the visitors. Tourists arrive at Kodanad fascinated by baby elephant’s various stages of development at the Care center. At least four to six baby elephants are brought in and trained every year. There are many walkways beside the river that give pleasant experience to the visitors. There is a small wildlife park at the centre which is a home of deer and other wildlife varieties.

Important Info: Traveler’s may reach the park before 9.30 AM IST and That’s the shower timing of the elephants in the camp and it’s worth watching.

Transportation: Kodanad has got private bus services to places inside and outside Kochi town and run into several neighboring towns.There are frequent bus services to Perumbavoor from here. AutoRickshaws are commonly used for small distances. The nearest railway stations are Angamaly and Aluva. The Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is only 16 km from the kodanad Elephant training centre. Kodanad is surrounded by many small but populous commuter villages, The notable ones are Koovappady, Thottuva, Alattuchira, Panamkuzhy, Cheranalloor,Kurichilakode, kaprikad etc. Vallam town, is one of the main interchange points for public transports

About Kodanad

Kodanad village is at the height of 1900 meters above sea level. Around 120 families residing in the village, including the Toda tribes. Kodanad was once very famous for its vast tract of shola grassland forest, and some of the remnants of that forest still exist in-tact even today.  

Kodanad is beautiful throughout the year. In summers, the visitors can enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of Eastern Ghats, Moyar Valley, Rangaswamy peak, Bhavanisagar Dam etc. In winters, the mercury drops up to 6 degrees Celsius, skies are generally clear, and guests can enjoy starry nights & spot constellations. In the rainy season, one can enjoy the beautiful displays of cloud drops and lightning on the Eastern Ghats. In June and July, whenever it rains in Kerala, Kodanad receives strong winds up to 50 – 70 km/h pulling along with it the white clouds. To feel the fast-moving clouds caressing you is once in a lifetime experience.

Watch Latin American Music Awards

Megadeth announced the dates for a 33-show U.S. fall tour on Tuesday (April 23). The Live Nation-produced Destroy All Enemies outing will feature support from Mudvayne and All That Remains and is slated to kick off on August 2 at the Walmart AMP in Rogers, AR.

Jeezy Responds to Abuse Allegations Made by Estranged Wife Jeannie Mai: ‘Deeply Disturbing’

The two-month run will include shows in Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Charlotte, Boston, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Minneapolis, before winding down on Sept. 28 with a gig at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Tickets for all the dates will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. local time on Friday (April 26), with a presale for Cyber Army/Megadeth Digital members kicking off today at noon local time here .

According to a release, the outing will feature Mustaine and company playing classics from their beloved albums Rust in Peace , Countdown to Extinction and others, including their most recent studio LP, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!
