Overview of Southampton as a Cruise Port

southampton cruise parking

The port’s state-of-the-art facilities cater to a diverse range of cruise lines, including the renowned P&O Cruises, Cunard and Royal Caribbean, ensuring an array of enticing itineraries to suit every traveller’s preferences. Beyond its exceptional cruise offerings, Southampton features a host of cultural attractions, world-class restaurants, and captivating landmarks, enticing visitors to explore its charms and nearby towns before or after their cruise journey.

Four Cruise Terminals, Endless Possibilities

At Southampton’s world-class port lies four dedicated cruise terminals, each catering to the differing needs of various cruise lines and their passengers. The terminals are as follows:

  • City Cruise Terminal (Berth 101): Nestled in the heart of Southampton, the City Cruise Terminal serves as a bustling hub for cruise embarkation and disembarkation. It is predominantly used by Royal Caribbean and their subsidiaries, which include Celebrity and Silverseas.
  • Ocean Cruise Terminal (Berth 46/47): The Ocean Cruise Terminal is strategically positioned close to the city centre, but is just outside the main docks where the other terminals are situated. This Terminal is predominantly used by the Carnival Corporation, so you will use this port for Princess or P&O cruises.
  • QEII Cruise Terminal (Berth 38/39): Located on the eastern side of the port, the QEII Cruise Terminal epitomizes luxury and elegance. It frequently hosts prestigious Cunard cruise ships, offering passengers a taste of opulence right from the moment of embarkation. CPS
  • Mayflower Cruise Terminal (Berth 106): Sat in the middle of the port of Southampton, the Mayflower Cruise Terminal is another prominent spot for Carnival group cruise embarkation and disembarkation.
  • Horizon Cruise Terminal (Berth 102) : Horizon is the newest terminal at Southampton and sits adjacent to the City Cruise Terminal. It was built as a joint venture between MSC and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which includes luxury brands like Regent Seven Seas and Oceania.

The Terminal you sail from will be determined by the cruise line and the size of the ship you are sailing on. But regardless of the terminal, your cruise parking options will remain the same.

Whether you prefer on-site parking at the cruise terminal for added convenience or opt for off-site parking with shuttle services, booking early allows you to choose the option that best aligns with your needs and preferences.
  • Tailored Solutions for Special Needs : If you have specific parking requirements, such as accessible parking spaces or electric vehicle charging stations, planning in advance gives you a better chance of securing these tailored solutions.

Southampton Cruise Parking Options

When it comes to booking your cruise parking at Southampton, it’s important to understand all of the options available to you. Each one has its pros and cons and we’ll cover them all, from at port parking to Southampton hotels with cruise parking and everything in between.

By exploring and comparing these parking choices, you can make informed decisions based on factors that are important to you like cost and proximity.

On-Site Cruise Parking

On-site cruise parking at Southampton’s cruise terminals offers the ultimate convenience for travellers embarking on their cruise adventure. With parking facilities located directly at the embarkation point, passengers can enjoy a seamless transition from their vehicles to the cruise ship. Here are the key pros and cons of on-site cruise parking:

Pros of Parking at Southampton Cruise Terminal

  • Convenience and Proximity : On-site parking eliminates the need for additional transportation between the parking area and the cruise terminal. Passengers can simply park their vehicles and walk a short distance to check-in.
  • Security and Peace of Mind : On-site cruise parking is often equipped with enhanced security measures, such as surveillance cameras and patrolling personnel, providing passengers with a sense of security for their vehicles throughout their cruise vacation.
  • Easy Access to Belongings : Since the parking area is located nearby, passengers can easily access any forgotten items in their vehicles or make last-minute changes to their luggage without much hassle.

Cons of Parking at Southampton Cruise Terminal

  • Higher Cost : On-site cruise parking tends to be more expensive compared to off-site parking options. Passengers should be prepared to pay a premium for the added convenience.
  • Limited Availability during Peak Season : During busy travel times, on-site parking may reach full capacity quickly. Booking in advance becomes even more critical to secure a parking space.
  • Potential Traffic Congestion : Depending on the cruise schedule and the number of passengers arriving simultaneously, there might be traffic congestion near the cruise terminals, leading to slight delays in reaching the parking area.

While on-site cruise parking offers unparalleled convenience and peace of mind, budget-conscious travellers may weigh the higher cost against the advantages it provides. Ultimately, choosing on-site cruise parking is ideal for those seeking a hassle-free and seamless embarkation experience, willing to invest in the added convenience it offers.

On-Site Cruise Parking Providers

There are only actually a few parking options where your car is left at the port car park you arrive at. We class companies who have you turn up at a port car park, then drive your car to another location as off-site. So true onsite options are as follows;

CPS Parking Southampton

cps cruise parking at southampton

CPS currently operate the in-terminal parking lots for The Ocean, Mayflower and QEII Terminals. Although the cost of CPS was on the higher end of the scale, everything ran smoothly and we would highly recommend them.

AB Parking Southampton

AB are another om-site provider that offers parking within some of Southampton’s cruise terminals. The prices are similar to those offered by CPS, as they are only providers at specific terminals.

AB Parking currently operate the parking for cruises from Southampton City Cruise Terminal, as well as the brand new Horizon Terminal.

Penguin Cruise Parking

Penguin Parking are a little unique, compared to the other on-site options. They have a secure compound located near the City Cruise Terminal, which is where you will park upon arrival and it will remain for the duration of your cruise.

The Cruise terminals are walkable from the Penguin Parking compound. But if you don’t fancy the walk, they do have a free shuttle that will drop you off at the terminal entrance.

Southampton Terminal Parking Process

We were boarding the P&O Britannia at the Ocean Cruise Terminal. This ship can hold almost 4000 passengers, so as you can imagine, it was busy.

Dropping Your Car Off

Upon arrival we were sectioned in to lanes as we awaited vehicle inspection. Once the attendant checks your booking details you can exit the vehicle as they take photographs of its condition.

After completing the check-in process, the parking attendant will provide you with a QR code receipt. Ensure you store this safely as you will need it to collect your vehicle.

Once you have unloaded your luggage and gathered your belongings from the vehicle, you will leave your key on your dashboard. You are then free to make your way to luggage drop off at the terminal and begin your check in.

Collecting Your Car

After you leave the terminal building you will signs for your on-site parking provider. Usually this will be close to where you left your car upon arrival.

The signage will lead you to a cabin, this is where you will pick up your keys. Show the attendant your QR code receipt and they will locate your keys and direct you to your vehicle.

Once you arrive at your vehicle, load up your luggage, and then make sure you have a good look around to make sure there is no damage. You will also want to check your mileage and fuel.

If you have any cause for a dispute, go back to the attendant and raise your concerns immediately. If everything is ok, then simply drive off and begin your journey home.

Off-Site Cruise Parking

For travellers seeking more budget-friendly cruise parking options, off-site parking near Southampton cruise terminals prove to be a popular choice. Off-site parking facilities are generally located a few miles from the terminal, offering shuttle services to transport passengers to and from their vehicles.

Some providers allow you to drop your car at the short stay car parks, but they then drive them to their compound. So let’s explore the key pros and cons of off-site cruise parking:

Pros of Off-Site Parking

  • Cost-Effective : Off-site parking is generally more budget-friendly compared to on-site options, making it an attractive choice for travellers looking to save on parking expenses.
  • Shuttle Services : Off-site parking facilities usually offer complimentary shuttle services to the cruise terminal. This ensures convenient transportation for passengers and their luggage without the need to walk long distances.
  • Ample Availability : Off-site parking often has a larger capacity compared to on-site lots, reducing the risk of reaching full capacity during peak travel seasons.

Cons of Off-Site Parking

  • Transportation Time : Shuttle services may add some travel time to the embarkation process, especially during busy periods. Passengers should factor in this extra time when planning their arrival at the cruise terminal.
  • Security Concerns : While many off-site parking facilities take measures to ensure security, some passengers may have concerns about leaving their vehicles at a location other than the cruise terminal’s designated parking area.
  • Less Accessibility to Vehicles : In the event that passengers need to access items in their vehicles, if they forgot something, they may find it less convenient than if their vehicles were parked on-site.

Off-site cruise parking offers a practical and cost-efficient solution for those who are willing to trade off the added convenience of on-site parking for reduced expenses. If you can live with the downsides, off-site cruise parking proves to be a viable option to kick start their cruise.

Just be sure to check out the reviews of your parking provider, paying particular attention to security and vehicle damage.

Depending on the time of year you are sailing, you can secure this package from as little as £150 for hotel, breakfast and return taxi.

Elizabeth House Hotel

The Elizabeth House Hotel is a popular choice among experienced cruisers, and is located just outside Southampton city centre near the University. On the night of their stay, guests can enjoy free parking.

They have recently expanded their secure on-site car parking facility, as some cruisers like to just book parking at the hotel. The cost per day for cruise parking starts at just £4.75 per day, and goes up to £15 depending on when you cruise.

Hilton Ageas Bowl

As you can probably guess, the Hilton hotel is part of the Ageas Bowl resort complex, which is the home of Hampshire Cricket. It is situated approximately 20 minutes by car from Southampton cruise terminals. While parking is free, long stay parking for cruise guests is available as part of their cruise and park packages.

Ibis Southampton

The Ibis Southampton represents excellent value for the budget conscious, as it is located on West Quay Road very close to Southampton cruise port. Rooms at the Ibis are generally much more affordable than other hotels and, on the morning of the cruise you can take the short walk or 5 minute taxi.

Guest parking is chargeable at £10 per night, but long term cruise parking is a little cheaper at around £7 per day.

Chilworth Manor

Best Western Chilworth Manor Hotel is another hotel on the outskirts of Southampton, located around 20 minutes from the cruise docks. But it does boast extensive gardens, and a modern spa with pool.

Car parking is free for guests. But like some of the other hotels we’ve mentioned, they do offer inclusive packages which include breakfast, free use of the leisure facilities, and taxi transport service for two guests to/from the terminals and parking for up to 14 days.

Pros of Hotel Stay and Park

  • Added Amenities and Services : Staying at a hotel before the cruise allows passengers to enjoy additional amenities and services, such as dining options, spa facilities, and relaxing surroundings, making it a relaxing pre-cruise experience.
  • Security and Peace of Mind : Hotels with cruise parking typically offer secure parking facilities with surveillance, providing peace of mind for travellers leaving their vehicles behind during the cruise.
  • Potential Package Deals : Some hotels may offer package deals that include both the room stay and parking at a discounted rate, providing cost savings compared to booking parking and accommodations separately.

Cons of Hotel Parking

  • Higher Cost : Staying at a hotel with cruise parking can sometimes be more expensive compared to off-site parking options alone. However, the added convenience and amenities may justify the higher cost.
  • Limited Availability : During peak cruise seasons, hotel rooms with cruise parking packages may sell out quickly, much quicker than on-site parking. Early booking is essential to secure a spot.
  • Hotel Location : While some hotels may be within walking distance to the cruise terminal, others may require a short shuttle or taxi ride. If the Hotel doesn’t offer a shuttle, then you will need to factor in the cost of a taxi.

Southampton hotels with cruise parking offer a convenient and hassle-free solution for travellers seeking an easy pre-cruise experience. Early booking is advised to secure the desired hotel and parking package.

Making Hotel and Cruise Parking Affordable

On most occasions hotel parking packages can be added to an existing booking. This means you are free to shop around for the best Southampton cruise hotel rate and then add your parking package. Making this a great option if you are limited on funds.

To get the best rates we recommend Expedia , as their free membership gives you instant access to discounted rates.

Best Cruise Parking for Southampton

The best cruise parking option in Southampton varies based on individual preferences and needs. For those seeking ultimate convenience and proximity to the cruise terminal, on-site parking at the cruise terminals themselves may be the top choice.

This option allows passengers to park their vehicles just steps away from the embarkation point, making the check-in process smooth and hassle-free. It’s also worth looking at your cruise package options when you book, as some lines like P&O offer a select fare where you can enjoy extra benefits during your cruise as well as free on-site parking.

However, if budget considerations are a priority, off-site parking facilities with shuttle services offer a cost-effective solution without compromising on security and convenience.

Moreover, for travellers looking for an all-inclusive pre-cruise experience, hotels with cruise parking packages provide the added benefit of a comfortable stay and secured parking throughout the cruise.

Ultimately, the best cruise parking option will depend on your own budget, preferences, and priorities. So with that in mind, we have provided out best picks for each of the options available.

  • CPS parking (on-site)
  • Cruise Azure (off-site)
  • Holiday Inn (Hotel Package)

These are based on our preferences, as much as we prefer on-site, these aren’t always available, especially if we have booked a last minute cruise. This would generally be when we would explore the other options.

Tips for Parking at Southampton

Having been on several cruises, there are several tips and tricks we have picked up along the way. These will be especially handy to new cruisers.

Packing and Organizing Luggage for Convenient Drop-off

Packing and organizing luggage with convenient drop-off in mind is essential to ensure a smooth handover of your vehicle. Here are some helpful tips to optimize your packing for easy drop-off:

  • Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at the cruise terminal early, especially if you anticipate a high volume of traffic or passengers boarding. Early arrival allows ample time for vehicle drop-off and reduces the chances of long queues.
  • Organize Your Luggage : This probably goes without saying, but we’ll cover it anyway. Make sure you luggage is loaded in a way it is quick and easy to remove from your vehicle. Try to avoid too many small bags and pack as much as possible in to one large case per person.
  • Pack Essentials Separately : Consider packing essential items, such as travel documents, medications, and valuables, in a carry-on bag. This way, you’ll have quick access to important items during check-in and boarding. It’s also worth noting that it may be late in the evening by the time your bags arrive, so some extra clothing may also be necessary.
  • Label Your Luggage : You definitely want to do this beforehand. Most cruise lines require you to print labels at home which clearly state your name, cruise ship, and stateroom number. This helps porters and cruise staff direct your bags to the correct location and can be a hassle trying to do it at the port. We recommend using these hard wearing luggage labels.

By following these packing and organization tips, you’ll streamline the drop-off process at the cruise terminal, making the transition from your vehicle to your ship cabin seamless and efficient.

If this is your first time cruising, you may also want take a look at our cruise essentials packing list .

Time Management

Navigating Southampton, the cruise terminal and parking areas can sometimes be a pain, depending on the time of year or number of ships in port. Applying the following tips may just make things run a little smoother.

  • Follow Signage : Upon your approach to Southampton, overhead electrical signs will display your cruise ship and corresponding gate number. Pay close attention to the terminal’s directional signage, which guides you to the appropriate parking area and drop-off zones. Relying on the Sat-Nav took us to the wrong end of the cruise port.
  • Parking Check-in : If you’ve pre-booked on-site parking, have your parking pass displayed on your dashboard. This will allow security staff to quickly identify you as a passenger and direct you to the check in area.
  • Unload Luggage : Following our steps above about luggage will allow for a quick vehicle check in.
  • Carry-On Luggage : As well as our tip about carry-on luggage, we also recommend leaving a pocket free in your bag. Upon arrival at the terminal building, we like to item in here that is likely to trigger the security alarms, such as belts, keys, phones and watches. This is much better and quicker than having to do stand to one side and do it in the queue

By following these tips, you’ll navigate the Southampton cruise terminal and parking areas efficiently, setting the stage for a fantastic journey ahead.

Saying Goodbye to your Car

parking at southampton cruise terminal

Upon pulling up at the port, the parking staff will ask for your details and check you in. While they do this, take a picture of your dash which displays your mileage, furl level and some of the identifiable port in the background.

The staff will then take pictures of your vehicle and we recommend you take some of your own while your family unpack. Make sure you get the front, back and both sides.

You will then be asked to turn off your engine and leave your keys on top of the dashboard, ready for them to move it to your parking space. Yep, you guessed it, get a picture of this as well.

These pictures may come in handy should any disputes arise upon your return.

Picking up your Vehicle

There is only really one tip we can provide other than comparing the vehicle to the pictures you took. Leave the ship as early as possible.

You have two options for disembarkation. Leave your packed luggage out the night before for porters to take to the luggage hall in the terminal, or keep hold of your luggage and carry it of yourself.

Most rooms have to be vacated by 8am at the latest, so we always opt to take our own cases of. That way when disembarkation begins, you can simply walk off the ship, rather than be left hanging around a public area waiting for your deck number to be called before you can leave the ship.

Taking off your luggage also means there are virtually no queues to collect your car, get your shuttle or grab a taxi. In fact, on our last cruise, we left our room and were driving out of the car park within 20 minutes.

Cruise Parking at Southampton FAQs

Yes cruise terminal parking is available using our recommended parking providers.

How much is parking at Southampton cruise terminal?

Depending on which option you choose, parking can cost anything from £28 for a week with local parking, to £220 for two weeks for on-site parking.

Yes, in our experience, on-site parking is far superior. But it will cost a little more than off-site parking.

Alternative Transport Options

It’s worth noting that driving and parking aren’t the only options available to get you to your cruise. If you don’t want the stress of driving you can opt for the train, coach or even plane.

Whilst flying can have you in Southampton in under an hour, the extra time needed at the airport and additional security screenings are less than relaxing. Currently you can fly direct to Southampton from the following airports;

  • Leeds Bradford

If you are flying a family in for a cruise, the cost of tickets, seats and luggage can quickly add up, so this isn’t necessarily an affordable option

Looking at the cruise groups on social media, this tends to be the most popular alternative to driving yourself. Coach tickets can be cheap and they generally have convenient pick up and drop off points throughout the UK.

Whilst you don’t have to do the driving, it can still be a long and tiring journey to the port, especially if you are arriving on the day the cruise sets sail.

Let’s face it, UK trains can be somewhat unreliable, with strikes and cancelations happening at any time. Not to mention the fact that there are very few direct routes to Southampton.

Opting to take the train could have you carting you luggage around all day as you swap trains numerous times. Also we would highly recommend you travel the day before your cruise as a minimum.

Being a major city and port within the UK, all of the major rental car companies have a location in Southampton. In some cases, hiring a car locally and dropping it off near the port can be a cost effective way to get to your cruise.

Of course you will need to make two one way reservations, but most rental agents will provide onward travel to a local hotel or the port itself. Click here for competitive hire rates

Southampton Cruise Parking – Parking On Someone’s Private Driveway – Via an App

If you are looking for affordable car parking in Southampton, travel light and are able to walk, parking on someone’s private driveway may be a good, affordable option for you.

This option is usually considerably cheaper than the cruise car park options available.

Why Choose to Park Your Car on Someone’s Private Drive?

I often use this method of parking when cruising from Southampton.

It is often considerably cheaper than parking in a designated cruise car park. In the past I’ve paid around £70 for the week.

At busy times of the year – Bank Holidays, School Holidays etc, cruise car parking can be very expensive!

There have been times when I have booked a last-minute cheap cruise deal – only to find all the regular cruise car parks full .

This has been such a good option for me, and I have particular spaces in Southampton that I like, and will book again!

How to Find a Suitable Driveway to Park on

There are Apps available that connect parking space owners with people wishing to park their cars whilst on a cruise, on holiday, or just visiting the area.

You can book for just a couple of hours, a week or longer .

You are also able to search for parking with Electric Car Charging points if you should need one.

car parking space

Two of the most popular Companies are :

Your Parking Space *

Just Park *

How it Works

  • Download the company’s App
  • Select the dates and times you would like to park
  • Choose from a number of parking spaces in the area that are available. You will find photos of the spaces and maps showing their locations on the App.
  • Book and pay online
  • When you arrive, just park the car and leave.

No need to have any interaction with the owner of the parking space, just park and leave !

You Can Rate Your Parking Space – and the Owners Can Rate You Too!

  • You can leave feedback on your return about the parking space you have rented. This helps others choose suitable, safe spaces in future.

The owners of the parking space can also rate you – so be kind and considerate, arrive and leave quietly and don’t overstay your booking times!

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Space

  • How far the space is from the cruise terminal?
  • Are you able to walk there or can you easily get a taxi?
  • Is the space safe?
  • Is the space big enough for your car?
  • Will people be constantly walking past the space, is your car liable to get damaged?

If You Have Any Problems…

Contact the company you are using via their App.

your parking space website

Many companies offer additional insurance coverage for a fee, to protect against the unlikely event of your car being damaged whilst parked.

This insurance cover can be added on at the time of booking.

Your car own insurance should also cover you for any damage if you wish to claim on it

In Conclusion

This method of parking is a good option for those who are happy to book via an app on their phone.

It is also a good, affordable option if other cruise car parks are full.

If you are not happy to use modern technology to search for and book a parking space, this is probably not the option for you.

Companies do often have a telephone number for customer service, for support once booked.

It is, however, completely down to you to check the parking space’s suitability and safety before you make a booking.

I wouldn’t hesitate to park on someone’s driveway, using an App. I have done it many times in many different towns and cities, and have never had a problem!

Cruise parking and long stay parking

Southampton welcomes many visitors who need cruise parking or long stay parking for other purposes like travelling to the Isle of Wight or staying with friends or relatives.

You can park for longer periods at several barrier controlled multi-storey car parks in Southampton. See below for details about our Bedford Place, Eastgate Street and Grosvenor Square car parks. These charge only £5 per day after the first 24 hour charging period as part of a single stay.

Cruise parking prices

On your return, simply insert your ticket into pay machines as normal and the charge will be calculated automatically.

Travelling onwards to your cruise terminal

Travelling onwards from your chosen car park to the cruise terminal or ferry terminal is straightforward. For example, cruise or ferry passengers who have parked in Eastgate Street, there is a taxi rank on the High Street, two minutes' walk from the car park.

Map showing the location of Eastgate car park and the taxi rank on High street. A dotted line runs West from the car park, along Eastgate Street to High Street, then heading North along High Street before the junction with East Street

Other cruise parking services

Cruise customers are urged to carefully research third-party operators before making a booking for parking on land other than the port. Cruise & Passenger Services provide a park and cruise scheme within the port.

Advice when researching providers

When researching providers, cruise customers should:

  • Carefully read the terms and conditions to ensure that the service offered provides you the safety, security, and assurances you require
  • Pay close attention to any limitations and exclusions, such as liability regarding Fixed Penalty Notices, cancellation, damage, theft, disconnection of trackers/dash cams, towing and impounding
  • Ensure the company you use holds the appropriate insurance should your vehicle be damaged, lost or stolen
  • Ensure you have the address of where your car will be parked while on your cruise. If your car will be parked on private land such as a supermarket, hotel, or residential parking, contact the landowner to ensure the company has their permission to store your car on their land

If you use a 'price comparison' website:

  • Ensure that the companies promoted can be contacted directly for a quote, and that you would be able to contact them directly regarding your booking or any queries
  • Check that the website compares prices to all independent cruise parking companies, and to the prices available with Associated British Ports and Cruise & Passenger Services , who provide parking services in the port itself

Complaints regarding parking providers

If you have a complaint regarding any parking provider, contact them directly in writing in the first instance. If you remain dissatisfied, you can obtain advice from:

  • Citizen’s Advice on 0800 144 8848
  • Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133

If you have paid by credit or debit card, you may be able to contact your bank to instigate a charge back.

Most cruise lines have sailings from Southampton including:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • P&O Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean

Last minute discounts

As the departure date nears, cruise lines often reduce their prices in order to fill the last remaining cabins. This can mean that last minute cruisers may be able to bag themselves a cheap deal. Not only will you find cheap inside staterooms, but the discounts on outside staterooms, balconies and suites may be even larger as if the cruise lines don’t sell all these they may have to start upgrading people free of charge in order to fulfil the demand for the popular inside staterooms.

Standby cruises from Southampton

You may be familiar with the term 'standby' from airlines who offer 'standby flights' to people who arrive at the airport without a booking. It's not possible to arrive at the Port of Southampton and board a cruise ship, as passenger lists need to be submitted 48 hours before departure If you're not on this list then there's simply no way you can board the ship. However, if you are interested in a super last-minute cruise from Southampton, please give us a call and we will be happy to look up which ships have staterooms remaining.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

last minute cruise parking southampton

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

Flight Status Info

As an air traveler, it's important to stay informed about the status of your flight at all times. At SVO, there are several ways to check your flight status and stay up-to-date on any changes.

One of the easiest ways to check your flight status is by using the in-airport flight displays (FIDS). These displays are located throughout the airport and provide real-time information on flight departures, delays, and gate information. Simply find the display that corresponds to your flight and check the status.

Another convenient way to stay informed is by using your airline's mobile phone app. Many airlines offer apps that allow you to receive alerts about departure delays, cancelations, or gate changes directly to your phone. You can also check your flight status and make changes to your reservation through the app.

In addition to mobile apps, airlines may also send updates via text, email, or push notifications. Make sure to check with your airline to see what options are available to you.

Passengers can check the status of their flight departure at SVO Airport by visiting the flight departures page on ifly.com, which provides real-time updates on flight departures, delays, and gate information.

Helpful Tips

When to arrive.

When traveling through Moscow Airport, it is recommended to arrive at least 2-3 hours before your scheduled departure time. This allows enough time for check-in, security screening, and navigating the airport. The busiest times to avoid are typically during peak travel seasons and holidays, as well as early morning and late evening flights.

Getting to the Airport

SVO is located approximately 29 kilometers northwest of Moscow city center. The best ways to get to the airport include taking a taxi, using public transportation such as the Aeroexpress train or bus, or driving and parking in one of the airport's parking lots. It is important to allow enough time for traffic and potential delays when choosing your mode of transportation.

Getting Oriented

When arriving at SVO Airport, it is recommended to use iFly.com's interactive airport maps to get oriented and navigate the airport. The maps provide detailed information on the airport's terminals, gates, restaurants, shops, and other amenities. Additionally, there are information desks located throughout the airport where you can ask for assistance and directions.

Avoiding Delays

To avoid delays at the airport, it is important to arrive early, have all necessary documents and identification ready, and follow all security protocols. Additionally, it is recommended to check the status of your flight before arriving at the airport and to stay updated on any potential delays or cancellations.
