When I was little, I had a huge crate of assorted Lego pieces. New sets were all well and good, but once they'd been built and enjoyed, each in turn was dismantled, its constituent parts destined to become more fuel for the crate. It was a seemingly bottomless well of colourful, constructive opportunity from which entire worlds could spill forth, a single piece uncovered at just the right time bringing life to a brand new idea. Lego has been incorporated into dozens of games over the past two and a half decades, but none of them bring the magic of my crate to life like Lego Builder's Journey.

Each of the dioramas that make up Lego Builder's Journey is shaped by a single goal. On one side of each level is a stack of pieces denoting a child, who must cross the minute world in front of them to reunite with their parent on the other side. There is, however, no prescribed solution to any puzzle. In true Lego style, you're free to use the handful of blocks provided in any way you see fit, as long as you can complete your goal. Establishing a route from A to B is often an iterative process, but it's one with no fail states or wrong answers. As long as it does what you want it to do, your solution doesn't need to be elegant or efficient. If the pieces fit together, there'll be some kind of way forward.

As those pieces come together, they handle in a manner almost as satisfying as the real thing. Simplistic controls let you snap blocks into place. Piles of bricks rattle as you comb through them looking for exactly the right one, and flit seamlessly through different positions as you rotate them into place. It's an amazingly tactile experience, especially when you consider the level of detail on offer in each diorama, all of which are created entirely from pieces you might find in a set you've picked off the toy store shelf. Characters move by hopping from block to block, as they might at the hands of a real person, with the attention paid to every brick, shadow, and ray of light only building that realism further.

Even the story, a simple but enjoyable narrative of parental responsibility and childish imagination, speaks to what Lego has always attempted to invoke. For the greying parent figure, play gets pushed aside for the monotony of work, while for the child, the wonders of the natural world make way for the wonders of their imagination. A robot cobbled together from basement parts comes to life, turning the browns and greens of dioramas inspired by hiking trails and remote campsites into the vibrant primary colours of children's television. Even those themes, however, are threatened, twisted into a vignette of a classroom that draws uncomfortable parallels to the grind of the parent's factory job. A healthy dose of slapstick and childish naivety ensure Lego Builder's Journey never deviates too far from its toybox origins, but the dark, industrial nature of later levels ensures that its more serious ideas land.

While other Lego games have leaned with increasing regularity on the humour and bombast offered by enormous, child-friendly licenses, Light Brick Studios focuses on what it's actually like to play with those little coloured blocks. It's a subtle approach, but one that obfuscates the game's limited scope, and manages to capture everything from the imaginative freedom that Lego offers to the feeling of handling each individual brick.

Across the 35 levels that made up the original mobile version of Lego Builder's Journey, both narrative and puzzles gently twist and turn, picking up new ideas and dropping them again, all within the format of the brick-based dioramas. Throughout the earlier stages, the game's sandbox style persists, with the few levels in which there's a more defined solution often trying to highlight a specific theme. The guiding hand through the game's different ideas is subtle, which when coupled with camera controls that limit your ability to take in a diorama from all sides can lead to the occasional issue with transparency. The difficulty curve remains steady throughout, often relying on the complexity of the bricks you use rather than the puzzles themselves when it ramps up. When the original finale does arrive, it's an excellent capstone to story, theme, and design.

Unfortunately, the levels that come after maintain very little sense of that gentle progression. In a series of levels added for the PC version, a significant new approach is introduced. Rather than use complete bricks, these puzzles allow you to stitch together fragments or duplicate the blocks you've already made, adding an unwelcoming extra element of experimentation. Newly-implemented fail states are punishing and monotonous—in one instance a three-strikes approach wipes your progress and only takes you back to the diorama once you've completed a repetitive task. The increased complexity aligns with a far less transparent approach and a far less defined building system. The charm remains—the levels inspired by the imaginative, colourful dioramas from earlier on—and the dioramas themselves are as pretty and detailed as any of their predecessors, but it's hard to think of these less enjoyable levels as anything but unnecessary padding in an otherwise expertly-crafted game.

Within the beautiful environments and open-ended approach to puzzle solving, Lego Builder's Journey is perhaps the most authentic, earnest Lego game there's ever been, capturing every joyful aspect of its source material. From the sense of freedom that a pile of bricks offers right down to the individual bricks between your fingers, Lego Builder's Journey manages to recreate not just what Lego is, but what it can be. The attempt to build on its finely sculpted first half is unfortunately clumsy, sacrificing much of the gentle, open-ended approach that makes it so successful, but the way in which it captures with such care and attention something so beloved through its physicality and tactility, even in this virtual format, makes this a very special game.

Lego: Builder's Journey on PC Is 2021's Most Pleasant Surprise

Ray tracing done right..

Outside of its familiar looking bricks, Lego has cemented itself in popular culture thanks to a host of licensed games based on Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, as well as its own movies. Lego: Builder's Journey is none of that. Rather, it's a calming experience that showcases PC gaming at its best.

Lego: Builder's Journey has you solving puzzles in the form of Lego dioramas of increasing difficulty. There's an extremely chilled out soundtrack and minimal storytelling that follows a son and father as they build Lego sets together. It's backed up by stellar presentation. From each brick to its iconic minifigs, every single pixel is near perfect.

Sure, the game's been available on Apple Arcade since December 2019 and there's a Nintendo Switch version too, but the PC version leans heavily into cutting-edge features like ray tracing.

Granted, you can play through the entire game with a GPU that doesn't support it, but you'll be missing out. This is one game where ray tracing really adds to the immersion rather than just being one other thing to stick on the product page. Utilising ray tracing techniques like Global Illumination, each scene looks mesmerising and there's a noticeable difference in taking and placing blocks with and without ray tracing.

It comes at a real cost though. On our Alienware Aurora R9 with an Intel Core i9 9900K processor, 32GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super, we were able to eke out around 30fps with every detail maxed out at 4K. Though keep in mind, that's the point: this is one of those games that exists to show off how far ray tracing tech can go and what it can bring to the table.

The puzzles themselves are a treat. From building slides to help minifigs get from one point in a diorama to another to piecing together a dilapidated building, they're spectacles in motion. They aren't too tough to complete either and you'll be able to finish this game in a couple of hours or so. While the game mainly controls with the left mouse button, it felt a bit clunky versus using a controller to move and set bricks.

Considering the Rs. 469 price tag on Steam, you really can't go wrong with Lego: Builder's Journey. In a sea of adrenaline-fuelled, action-laden fare, it's a welcome meditative experience. Hopefully Nvidia makes its GPUs easier to buy but if you have the hardware to run it, it's well worth checking out.

Slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy them a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.

LEGO Builder’s Journey is a very relaxing puzzler with some cool concepts and ideas. The game is incredibly serene, as its peaceful tunes and minimalist design are quite relaxing. The integration of ray tracing and Nvidia DLSS make for a visually stunning game. LEGO Builder’s Journey is refreshingly original take on the LEGO series, and represents a direction that I hope to see the franchise head in the future.

The simplicity of Lego Builder's Journey is exactly why it's the most faithful Lego game of all outside actually putting physical bricks together. A smartly put together little story puzzler that showcases the power of creative thinking and play that is synonymous with the iconic Danish toy. The only thing that betrays its joy is the occasionally clunky controls in tight spots.

Ultimately, the biggest obstacle for the game might be its price. $19.99 for this experience feels like a lot, even if everything being offered is perfectly pleasant. The story mode is nice, but not necessarily worth a replay. Creative mode is fun to tinker around with once or twice, but there’s just no hook to draw you back in to play it again and again.

LEGO Builder’s Journey is a comfortable yet original experience that separates itself from many currently available titles. Fans of the brand will be enamored by the presentation and how the gameplay captures the tactility of the toys. Unfortunately, puzzles are restrained, lacking the variety and imagination that permeates the brand. Although mechanics develop throughout, each segment is simple and lacks challenge. The awe-inspiring soundtrack and gorgeous visuals create an alluring level of polish. However, there isn’t a lot of content in this toy box.

LEGO Builder's Journey is an amazing experience, even more for players who own a computer that can handle Ray-Tracing. It's simple, efficient, charming and it even if it's short and has a few issues, can please anyone, child or adult.

LEGO Builder’s Journey receives big update alongside PC and Switch release

LEGO and Light Brick Studio has launched its iOS-exclusive puzzle game LEGO Builder’s Journey on PC and Nintendo Switch today after a two-year stint on Apple Arcade.

To celebrate this new release on other platforms, LEGO Builder’s Journey is receiving an update that adds new levels, story content, and mechanics to the game. Don’t expect it to be too substantial, as the game is still a pretty short experience, but overall it’s a welcome addition to an already lovely puzzle title.

The game is also receiving some graphical updates on PC, which features ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, reflections, shadows and a performance-boosting DLSS feature. In simple terms, it will look extremely nice on PC so it might be worth double-dipping if you originally played it on iOS.

If you’re unaware of what exactly LEGO Builder’s Journey is, it’s a slow-paced meditative puzzler that uses LEGO to build small diorama-sized worlds. You must build or alter different structures to create a path for your character to reach the end of the level.

This means you may need to use bricks from other parts of the level to solve the problem. For example, this could mean pulling bricks from elsewhere to create a bridge to get the LEGO person across a large river.

The controls in LEGO Builder’s Journey are also really simple, where you tap to pick up a brick, drag to move and rotate them, and tap again to place. This control system should carry over to the PC and Switch versions too.

LEGO Builder’s Journey is available now on the iOS App Store via Apple Arcade , as well as on Steam for PC and on Nintendo Switch .

All animal variants and where to find them in LEGO Fortnite

The Farm Friends update adds a ton of significant upgrades to LEGO Fortnite. With this update, you can keep animals in your village and meet several new creature variants. With this in mind, let me show you all animal variants and where to find them in LEGO Fortnite.

Every animal variant in LEGO Fortnite and how to get them

With the Farm Friends update, you can now find different animal variants around the world. This is a massive quality-of-life change and breathes a bit of life into the Farming aspect of the game. Here’s every friendly animal variant and where to get them:

• Yellow Chickens:  Grasslands
• Brown Chickens:  Dry Valley
• Tan Chickens:  Dry Valley
• Cows:  Everywhere
• Pigs:  Grasslands and Dry Valley
• Mountain Cows: Frost Lands
• Rams: Frostlands

Besides the Mountain versions, Cows don’t have variants tied to locations but now spawn in  different colors with unique spot patterns .

Pigs are brand new to LEGO Fortnite with the Farm Friends update and spawn in a couple of different colors (pictured above). Pigs commonly spawn in the Grasslands although I found them on the edge of the Dry Valley as well.

The Epic games picture eludes to there being a snow chicken in the game (top left). I’ve thoroughly searched the Frost Lands on my map and have only found sheep. Your mileage may vary, but I’m certain they aren’t in my world, as I could easily find the Dry Valley variants. If you’re struggling to find specific creatures, I recommend turning on visual footsteps . This option shows you where important sounds are coming from, including animals.

How to catch animals in LEGO Fortnite

Once you’ve found these animals in the wild, you’ll probably want to take them back to your village. You must build an Animal House  to keep anything, and you can create one when your village reaches level 2. Building an Animal House unlocks the  Animal Treat recipe , which you can use to lure creatures back to your humble abode.

Remember that  animals will run away if you encounter any hostile creatures , so plan accordingly. You can even use vehicles to transport animals back to your base. If you’ve not played LEGO Fortnite since engines were added, you can make some fantastic vehicles to quickly traverse the map. It’ll take a bit of effort to make a car with space for animals, but it’s worth it to bypass any problems on the journey.
