34 Best Things to Do in Philadelphia, According to a Local

Independence Hall Independence Hall free

It is in this red-brick, Georgian-style building that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated, drafted and signed by our forefathers, and those who visit Independence Hall can see surviving copies of the documents. Visitors can also see the Assembly Room where George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army. Recent reviewers agree this is a must-see in Philadelphia.

Located in Independence National Historical Park in Old City, Independence Hall is just steps from the Liberty Bell Center , making it convenient to visit both landmarks in a morning or afternoon.

Liberty Bell Center Liberty Bell Center free

No matter your interests or intentions for a visit to Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell is a must-see. This 2,080-pound piece of history was once mounted in the belfry of Independence Hall , where it was used to mark important historic events, most notably the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

It's unknown why or exactly when the Liberty Bell was damaged, though historians believe the first crack developed in the early 1840s. Metal workers were soon tasked with repairing the bell in anticipation of George Washington's birthday in 1846, but the repair was unsuccessful and the bell ceased to chime again.

Rocky Statue and Steps Rocky Statue and Steps free

Created for a scene in "Rocky III," the Rocky Statue sits at the bottom of "The Rocky Steps" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art , where the fictional boxer trained in the original movie.

For the full "Rocky" experience, run up the 72 steps of the museum – don't worry, you can stop for breaks along the way – so you can take in the views of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (often compared to the Champs-Élysées in Paris) at the top, just like Sylvester Stallone did in the film. Snap a photo with "Rocky" before or after the trek – previous visitors agree the fun photo op alone is worth a visit. They also warn of queues to take pictures.

Reading Terminal Market Reading Terminal Market free

One of the most fun (and delicious) things to do in Philadelphia is taste your way through Reading Terminal Market. Located beneath the Reading Railroad's 1891 train station (a National Historic Landmark) in Center City, Reading Terminal Market houses more than 70 vendors. Sample food from around the world – including Greek, Thai, Mexican and Indian specialties – while perusing homemade crafts and jewelry. Recent visitors agree there's something for everyone at Reading Terminal Market, noting that any lines you encounter are well worth the wait.

With so many merchants, the market can feel overwhelming so it's best to have a shortlist of places to visit before you head inside. Some of the best food options include:

Mutter Museum Mutter Museum

Housed in a 19th century building at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Mütter  Museum highlights the mysteries of the human body through wet specimens (biological samples preserved in fluid), anatomical models, medical instruments and more. Notable exhibits include Albert Einstein's brain, a tumor removed from President Glover Cleveland's mouth, and the death cast and livers of famous Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker.

Visitors agree the Mütter  Museum is a must-see for anyone visiting Philadelphia, though some say they were disappointed with the museum's small size. Due to the nature of the exhibits, the museum is not recommended for children younger than 10.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

This mixed media art museum in South Street is a must-visit in Philadelphia, with two indoor galleries and a two-story outdoor sculpture garden. Each of the handmade tiles, bicycle wheels, mirrors, bottles and folk art pieces incorporated into the space represents an aspect of creator Isaiah Zagar's life. Zagar – who first found mosaic art as a form of therapy after suffering from severe depression and nearly taking his own life – is now an award-winning artist whose work can be found throughout the city.

Travelers say it's an intriguing, beautiful and riveting museum, and that you'll want to take your time to see everything on display. Recent visitors also recommend purchasing tickets online in advance, as entry is timed in 30-minute blocks. Children are welcome, but note that the space is too small for strollers.

Inspired by founding father and scientist, Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is fun for visitors of all ages – not just kids. Interactive exhibits include "SportsZone," which explains the science behind surfing, rock climbing and more through simulators, and "Changing Earth," where you can calculate your carbon footprint. You can also use your body to complete a circuit and light a bulb, observe 3D printers in action and explore space without leaving earth at the Fels Planetarium.

Museum of the American Revolution Museum of the American Revolution

After it debuted in 2017, the Museum of the American Revolution quickly became one of the best attractions in Philadelphia. The only museum of its kind, it tells the story of this important historical event through interactive exhibits that engage visitors of all ages. Museumgoers appreciate the layout of the museum, which follows a chronological path, and note that George Washington's sleeping and office tent from the Revolutionary War is one of the highlights.

Another highlight, Revolution Place appeals to young kids with four hands-on exhibits: the "Military Encampment," with a recreated soldier's tent; the "8th Century Church;" the "Three Tun Tavern," where kids can see bottles, bowls and more that would have been used at a 1700s tavern; and the "18th Century Parlor," complete with a recreated privy (known today as an outhouse). Note that this part of the museum is only open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Eastern State Penitentiary Eastern State Penitentiary

The castle-like Eastern State Penitentiary is one of Philadelphia's most important historic sites. Having opened in 1829, this Quaker-inspired prison sought to reform prisoners using isolation and reflection rather than capital punishment and physical abuse. Although it was shut down in the 1970s, the Eastern State Penitentiary led the way to reform in the judicial system. Today, you are welcome to tour this National Historic Landmark; the highlight for many is American gangster Al Capone's cell.

Bear in mind that this attraction may not be appropriate for younger children due to its rather frightening nature. To embrace the terror, visit around Halloween when the prison celebrates the spooky season with five haunted attractions.

Barnes Foundation Barnes Foundation

Art aficionados who gravitate toward French impressionist, post-impressionist and early modernist works should visit the Barnes Foundation. The museum's permanent collection features paintings by Renoir, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse and Van Gogh, plus an impressive mix of African art, wrought-iron metalwork, Native American pottery and more.

But here's why the Barnes Foundation is so unique: Even if all of the above terms and names sound foreign to you, you'll still find something to enjoy. The museum's late founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, sought to teach people from all backgrounds how to appreciate art. As such, all of the museum's artwork is grouped together in what Barnes called his "ensembles" – groupings of art (objects, media and more) from a variety of time periods and cultures – designed to make visitors draw similarities they wouldn't otherwise notice.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Depending when you visit and what's going on at Citizens Bank Park, traffic (particularly to exit the complex) can result in hourslong jams. At the center of the square, a 180-year-old fountain puts on a (free) seasonal water show every 30 minutes. Loews Hotels

To know Philadelphia is to understand that it’s a city of contrasts. Its reputation for sports fanaticism is legendary, as is its robust, award-winning culinary scene. Modern architecture is juxtaposed with cobblestone streets and brick row houses from the 1700s, and residents are actively working to make their urban spaces a bit greener through various tree-planting initiatives. This apparent dynamism is also present in Philly’s hospitality scene; here, luxury brands, like the Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton, regularly compete with long-standing, characterful hotels and a variety of up-and-coming boutique properties. In true Philadelphia form, there’s something for every type of traveler.

As a former resident of the City of Brotherly Love and a seasoned travel writer, I’ve been able to witness firsthand how many of these hotels leverage location, thoughtful amenities, and a steadfast sense of place to curate the guest experience. Combining my on-the-ground knowledge with editor-loved properties and winners from T+L’s It List, I’ve rounded up a list of the very best hotels in Philadelphia. Read on to discover what keeps the city’s leading hotels at the top of their game.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center

Four Seasons Resorts

Also available to book at Hotels.com

The indoor infinity pool, complete with expansive panoramic views, provides an unexpected moment of stillness in this busy city.

Travelers who are heights-averse may be uncomfortable with the rooms and suites, all located on the 48th to 56th floors.

The Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center is a relatively new property — especially when you consider the city’s age — that quickly landed on T+L’s It List in 2020 following its August 2019 opening. Since then, it’s become a beacon of luxury, subtly tucked away in Philly’s tallest building: the Comcast Technology Center. The first time I stayed at the property, I was immediately in awe of both its height, which is best experienced via the trio of high-speed glass elevators that swiftly bring you to the 60th-floor rooftop lobby, and its role as an oasis in such an energetic city. And nowhere will you find a more all-encompassing sense of peace than the indoor infinity pool and spa. While there are sweeping views throughout the hotel, thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows, the pool is where you can embrace a moment of stillness and truly appreciate the wondrous, sprawling city.

These unparalleled city scenes are also present at both Jean-Georges Philadelphia and SkyHigh, the hotel’s ultra-chic dining destinations with elevated menus and settings that can only be described as magical, particularly at sunset. After a full day of exploring the city, change into something a bit nicer, and grab a cocktail while enjoying the changing light as the day shifts into night.

The Details:

  • Nearby Attractions: The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia City Hall, Rittenhouse Square
  • Distance From Airport: 9.5 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: Accessible guest rooms, restaurant, exercise facility, and routes to rooms and public spaces

  • Pet Policy: One pet up to 25 pounds per reservation for no additional fee
  • Rates: From $875 per night

The Rittenhouse

Also available to book at Expedia.com

The hotel’s spa is one of the best in the city; if you’re in need of a complete reset, book the CBD Rest + Restore Body Experience.

You’re better off leaving your car at home to avoid the valet parking charge and neighborhood traffic.

My first introduction to The Rittenhouse was Library Bar, the property’s intimate watering hole set among shelves of rare and fine books, many of which detail Philadelphia’s storied history. From there, I cozied up to a table at Lacroix, one of the hotel’s fine dining destinations, and embarked upon an expertly curated wine-pairing journey. During both experiences, there was a clear dedication to excellence as well as a level of pride that mirrors how most lifelong Philadelphians feel about their city.

Outside of the F&B options within the 118-room hotel, there are several other reasons to book a stay. For starters, its enviable location on picturesque Rittenhouse Square allows guests to easily get to most of the city’s main sights within a short walk — or simply sit on a park bench beneath the trees. There’s also The Rittenhouse Spa & Club, where both guests and members can take advantage of fitness classes, personal training sessions, and the sunny Atrium Pool. Additionally, there’s an overall prestige surrounding the hotel that makes any Philly trip, no matter the length or the occasion, feel infinitely more special.

  • Neighborhood: Rittenhouse Square
  • Nearby Attractions : Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Schuylkill Banks, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
  • Distance From Airport: 9 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: ADA-compliant common spaces, accessible rooms
  • Parking: Valet parking, $70 per night
  • Pet Policy: One pet per guest with a $150 fee
  • Rates: From $415 per night

The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton

The Assembly Rooftop Lounge is a buzzy hotspot for after-work drinks, especially during the warmer months.

While the property is one of the most upscale hotels in the city, don’t expect five-star amenities or guest rooms.

At The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton, it’s all about the location. When staying in one of its 391 rooms and suites, you’ll be just a short walk or Uber ride away from most of the city’s top cultural sites — including the Rodin Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Your exposure to art will also continue inside the hotel, which showcases original local artwork throughout its accommodations and common spaces.

The highlight of my stay, though, had to be the Underground Spa. As the name suggests, you’ll head below ground level to access the relaxing sanctuary and its various services. I opted to recharge with the Alpine Arnica Deep Tissue Massage, which was preceded by a quick dip in the indoor, heated pool. If you’re in the mood for excitement rather than relaxation, you’ll find a heavy dose of fun (and excellent Philadelphia views) at The Assembly Rooftop Lounge. Just be sure to reserve your table in advance; the bar can get crowded.

  • Nearby Attractions: Rodin Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Reading Terminal Market
  • Distance From Airport: 9.4 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: ADA-accessible rooms and entrances to meeting rooms, spa, swimming pool, business center, and health club
  • Wi-Fi: $12 for standard in-room and lobby Wi-Fi
  • Parking: Self-parking, $55 per night; valet parking, $69 per night
  • Loyalty Programs: Hilton Honors
  • Pet Policy: Pets allowed with a $75 fee

Guild House Hotel

Jason Varney / Guild House Hotel

The boutique hotel is housed inside a cozy National Historic Landmark that balances Philadelphia’s past with modern amenities and thoughtful design.

This is a classic city hotel — no pets are allowed, and there’s no on-site parking.

Featured on our It List in 2022, Guild House Hotel made a splash in the world of Philadelphia lodging with just 12 guest rooms and a rather enticing story. While the Italianate townhouse is now a hotel, it was once home to the New Century Guild, an organization of freethinking women in the city’s suffrage era. Hotelier Brennan Tomasetti opted to name each room after the founding members: The Eliza, The Edith, The Martha, and so forth.

When you’re not resting in these individually designed spaces — each of which comes with a coffee corner, Bluetooth speakers, a smart screen TV, and luxurious linens — you may find yourself drawn to The Lounge, the room that was once the dining room for the Guild. Bring your book, or strike up a conversation with a fellow traveler; either way, it’s ideal for a leisurely afternoon in Philadelphia (particularly if it’s dreary outside).

The Details:

  • Neighborhood: Washington Square West
  • Nearby Attractions: Washington Square, Liberty Bell, Independence National Historical Park
  • Accessibility: One ADA-accessible room on the ground floor
  • Parking: Available next door for an undisclosed fee
  • Pet Policy: No pets, with the exception of service animals
  • Rates: From $249 per night

The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia

Ritz Carlton Hotels

As you may expect from a Ritz-Carlton property, the guest experience is defined by top-tier service and old-school glamor.

It’s in the heart of Philadelphia, so you won’t find peace and quiet when you step outside.

The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia’s Broad Street address is smack-dab in Center City, and the neoclassical bank building from the 1900s is impossible to miss. Those just passing by, however, won’t get to experience the classically appointed guestrooms or Chef Richard Sandoval’s Latin-American menu at Aqimero (think tuna ceviche, cheesesteak empanadas, and short rib al carbon).

If Philadelphia’s boutique hotels are better suited for couple’s trips and generally smaller affairs, this is a property meant for special events and large gatherings (think: weddings, business conventions, and family reunions). Not only is it impressive in both its architecture and amenities — there’s the Richel D’ambra Spa + Salon and a well-stocked fitness center — but it’s also outfitted with 301 guest rooms and suites. If you read through this list of hotels, you’ll see that this is a city where large, luxury hotels are few and far between.

  • Neighborhood: Center City
  • Nearby Attractions: Philadelphia City Hall, JFK Plaza (Love Park), Pennsylvania Convention Center
  • Distance From Airport: 9.3 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: Accessible guest rooms and entrances to common spaces
  • Loyalty Programs: Marriott Bonvoy
  • Pet Policy: One dog allowed (max 30 pounds) with a $150 fee
  • Rates: From $344 per night

The Rooms at Fitler Club

Guests can take advantage of every members-only amenity, including the screening room and 25,000-square-foot gym.

The location isn’t for everyone; those who want more row houses and greenery should look on the other side of the city.

Fitler Club is Phily’s version of Soho House — but you don’t have to be a member to book one of its 14 hotel rooms. Ideal for longer stays or business trips, the modern, comfortable accommodations are just one part of the overall appeal of the property. The nightly rate also grants guests access to the rest of the lifestyle club’s amenities: on-site restaurants, a bright coworking space, fitness classes, a pool, cold plunge, hot tub, and spa.

I’ve never stayed in the rooms themselves, but my experience as a club member involved daily visits to the riverside building, where I would sit with my laptop or hop on the Peloton Tread. As busy as the club can get, it never feels too crowded, loud, or overly exclusive. It’s slightly intimate, but hotel guests won’t stand out (or feel out of place) among the regular members.

  • Neighborhood: Center City West
  • Nearby Attractions: Schuylkill Banks, The Mütter Museum at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Rittenhouse Square
  • Distance From Airport: 8.6 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: The club itself is wheelchair accessible and there are elevators, but call before booking if you have any specific requests or questions
  • Parking: Valet parking available, price is dependent on member status
  • Pet Policy : Pets are not allowed
  • Rates: From $339 per night

Loews Philadelphia Hotel

The rooms are known to be relatively spacious, and they also come with designated workspaces and ergonomic chairs.

There’s no self-parking at the hotel, so longer stays will result in expensive valet charges.

When it comes to remote work-friendly hotels, not all properties are created equal. The Loews Philadelphia Hotel, however, is one of the better ones in the city. Along with desks and chairs in every room, there’s free, high-speed Wi-Fi and a fitness center you can escape to during the workday. The location is also a major plus; come lunchtime, you can step outside to any number of Philadelphia’s casual dining spots or more elegant bistros.

If you do choose to eat on property, you can pop down to Bank & Bourbon, The Lounge, or the grab-and-go POD Market. The first two are a bit upscale, but they’re still more casual than other fine dining restaurants you may have on your list. All in all, the Loews Philadelphia Hotel ensures its guests have every necessary amenity for a quick work trip or weekend getaway in the city.

  • Nearby Attractions: Philadelphia City Hall, Chinatown Friendship Arch, African American Museum in Philadelphia
  • Distance From Airport: 10 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility : ADA-compliant rooms are available
  • Parking: Valet parking, $60 per night
  • Loyalty Programs: Loews MVP Rewards Program
  • Pet Policy: Two pets per room with a $40 fee
  • Rates: From $186 per night

AKA Rittenhouse Square

The accommodations are more akin to apartments than typical hotel rooms.

There is a $25-plus-tax fee per day for stays between one and six nights.

AKA Rittenhouse Square does things a bit differently than its hotel neighbors, and that’s because the length of stay is often longer. Many guests stay anywhere from weeks to months at a time. With that in mind, the property accommodates and anticipates a variety of guest needs. Each suite — from the studio size up to the two-bedroom layout — comes with a gourmet kitchen, a Nespresso machine, a workspace, and access to the fitness center and cinema.

If you don’t feel like whipping up meals in your home-away-from-home, you can order off the menu at a.kitchen + bar. Breakfast consists of favorites like cornmeal pancakes and a French omelet, while dinner is a bit heavier with entrees like grilled branzino and roast lamb leg. Given the Rittenhouse Square location, you’ll also be steps away from top spots like Parc (known for its brunch), The Dandelion, and Friday Saturday Sunday.

  • Nearby Attractions: Rittenhouse Square, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Logan Square
  • Accessibility: The front desk tells T+L the hotel does have roll-in showers, but there are no specified ADA-compliant rooms.
  • Parking: No on-site parking
  • Loyalty Programs: AKA membership
  • Pet Policy: Daily and weekly guests pay a $100 fee per pet; monthly guests pay a $500 nonrefundable fee per pet
  • Rates: From $224 per night

The Franklin on Rittenhouse

The on-site speakeasy, the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company, is great for pre- or post-dinner drinks — just be sure to make a reservation if you can.

This is a boutique hotel that doesn’t have all the trappings of a large luxury property.

A bright red door signals your arrival to The Franklin on Rittenhouse, a 20-room property with a prime central location. It’s a sophisticated getaway, where all of the accommodations are uniquely decorated; The Maude, for instance, veers toward classic Hollywood glamor, while The Monarch is more masculine with its deep burgundy and brown color scheme.

Travelers might first be attracted to these Instagrammable rooms, but there’s even more magic to be found inside the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company, open from 5 p.m. onward. The speakeasy hides behind an unmarked door — in line with the Prohibition era — and its intimate atmosphere and list of craft cocktails have repeatedly earned it spots on “best of” lists in the world of beverage destinations. You’re welcome to order the classics, like a gimlet or negroni, or you can ask the mixologists for something a bit more creative: Rabbit Stew, Apology Accepted, and Italian Leather Sofa are all drinks featured on the menu.

  • Nearby Attractions: The Rosenbach, Walnut Street Theatre, Benjamin Franklin Pkwy
  • Distance From Airport: 9.2 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: No ADA-compliant guest rooms
  • Pet Policy: $55 per night with a 25-pound weight limit

YOWIE Hotel

Bre Furlong / YOWIE Hotel

The vibe is younger, cooler, and brighter than most hotels in Philadelphia.

There’s no on-site gym or valet parking — but you can get your exercise by exploring the highly walkable neighborhood, and there are several parking lots and garages in the vicinity.

Yowie Hotel opened its doors in 2023 and began to flow its own brand of creativity into the Queen Village neighborhood. It’s the newest iteration of the brand, with designer and co-owner Shannon Maldonado first launching the Yowie boutique in 2016, and it brings a sense of freshness to South Street. There are 13 individually decorated suites in total, and they all feel as if you’re staying in the apartment of one of your coolest friends. Expect bright colors, interesting textures, and a generally bright atmosphere.

The property is billed as an “invisible service boutique hotel,” meaning there’s a sense of anonymity to your stay. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any thought put into the guest experience, though — quite the opposite, in fact. You’ll find Malin + Goetz toiletries, a hairdryer, a fabric steamer, and decent Wi-Fi in each room, and each suite comes with a small-yet-functional kitchen.

  • Neighborhood: Queen Village
  • Nearby Attractions: Museum of the American Revolution, Powel House, Liberty Bell
  • Distance From Airport: 10.4 miles from PHL
  • Accessibility: One ADA-accessible suite
  • Pet Policy: Pets are not allowed
  • Rates: From $211 per night

Lokal Hotel - Old City

Lokal Hotel Philadelphia

The hotel’s concept is all about cementing yourself in the city, and it’s best experienced over a longer stay.

This is a small Airbnb-style property, with only six boutique apartment suites and no room service.

If you’ve ever considered moving to Philly, you might want to first try a short-term stay, like Lokal Hotel - Old City, to get a feel for the destination. This boutique hotel is just one property within the Lokal hotel group, which creates home-like spaces for travelers to ingrain themselves within the local culture.

The Old City location marries the charming history of the neighborhood with all of the modern amenities you could need for an extended stay in the area. Each suite is named after famous Philadelphians — Billy (William Penn), Ben (Franklin), Tina (Fey), etc. — and they all come with a washer-dryer unit, microwave, fridge, oven, and an electric range. Check-in is also pleasantly tech-forward, with an iPad and pre-communicated instructions for getting into the building. If you don’t end up enjoying your morning coffee in a bathrobe, you can head outside to the variety of neighborhood cafes to get your caffeine fix: Cafe Ole, Coffee Zeit, or Old City Coffee are all extremely close by.

  • Neighborhood: Old City
  • Nearby Attractions: Elfreth's Alley Museum, Betsy Ross House, National Constitution Center
  • Accessibility: No ADA-compliant guest rooms; there is no elevator or handicap access
  • Rates: From $300 per night

Know Before You Go

The city is extremely walkable.

While there is a city bus, subway, and train system, walking or Ubering to your destination is usually a bit more efficient — especially if you’re in the Center City district. If you’re expecting to get some steps in, make sure you pack accordingly. Select areas of the city, most notably, Old City, still have historic cobblestoned streets, which are best traversed with supportive walking shoes.

Sports culture reigns supreme

No one is more passionate about sports than the residents of Philadelphia. If you want to experience this famous level of excitement and dedication for yourself, align your trip with a Flyers, Eagles, 76ers, or Phillies game. Fair warning, though: larger sports events can cause significant traffic congestion. Factor extra transportation time into your schedule, or consider taking SEPTA's Broad Street Line to Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field, or Citizens Bank Park.

Check the calendar for other major Philadelphia events

Professional sports games aren’t the only events that may result in traffic, street closures, and higher hotel prices. Annual events like the Mummers Parade, the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run, and the Philadelphia Pride March & Festival are known to bring visitors and locals alike out onto the city’s streets in large numbers.

Philly has an exciting food scene

The Philadelphia culinary landscape is one of the most vibrant on the East Coast — and yes, it goes far beyond cheesesteaks, hoagies, soft pretzels, and water ice. Within the city’s many neighborhoods, you’ll find Ethiopian, Mexican, Japanese, Italian, Thai, Cambodian, and American fare, among others, and James Beard award-winning fine dining establishments are just as popular as casual neighborhood spots. Come hungry, make reservations, and be prepared for a number of unforgettable meals.
