(Welcome to Where to Watch , which provides a clear and simple answer to the question, "Hey, where can I watch this thing?" In this edition: "Star Trek: Enterprise")

"Star Trek: Enterprise" — originally just called "Enterprise" — debuted in September of 2001, and broke with a lot of long-held "Star Trek" traditions. For one, it was the first "prequel" in "Star Trek," set a century before the events of the original series. For the sticklers: "Enterprise" was set from 2151 to 2155 (with an epilogue in 2161), while the original series was set from 2265 to 2269. It was also going to be the first "Star Trek" series since 1993 that ran all by itself without a second series running simultaneously. There was a time when you could watch new episodes of " Star Trek: The Next Generation " and " Star Trek: Deep Space Nine " in the same week, and, after that, "DS9" and " Star Trek: Voyager ." The 1990s were a blessed time for "Star Trek."

Secondly, it dropped "Star Trek" from the title — a decision they would eventually undo — and, thirdly, the theme song was not an orchestral piece, but a soft rock Rod Stewart ballad sung by Russell Watson . That last thing is easily one of the worst things about the show, if not "Star Trek" in general. Also, by late 2001 "Voyager" had come to an end and this unusual new show set in the past, starring all new characters, featuring all new alien species, and sporting a new aesthetic (the effects were slicker, the design more industrial) now had to carry the torch all by its lonesome.

It did ... okay. "Enterprise" had trouble finding an audience, and lasted only four seasons (the previous three shows had lasted seven each). But now, years later, it's ripe for a revisit. Here's where you can watch it, and make up your own mind.

Star Trek is Everywhere

"Enterprise" is currently available to stream for free on: Paramount+, Prime Video, and Hulu.

If you are uncomfortable subscribing to things, and you prefer the purchase-and-download method, you can buy episodes of "Enterprise" on AppleTV , iTunes, Amazon ($2.99 per HD episode, $1.99 per SD episode, and $34.99 for a season), the Google Play store, and the most popular option, Vudu , which is currently offering seasons one, two, and three for only $19.99 each. Season four is $34.99.

The studio politics behind "Star Trek" are too complicated to get into here (it involved a split — and a reunion — of Viacom/Paramount and CBS), but whoever negotiated the streaming rights to "Star Trek" did us all a great favor. "Star Trek" wasn't stingy about keeping its entire TV catalogue available on whatever streaming service that would have them. As such, for many years, no matter what service you subscribed to, you likely had access to every single episode of every single "Star Trek" to date (although access to the animated series was a little rarer).

Since the launch of Paramount+, previously CBS All Access, all "Star Trek" streaming moved there, but many of the "Trek" shows remained scattered elsewhere. It's only the many, many new shows ("Discovery," "Short Treks," "Picard," "Lower Decks," "Prodigy," "Strange New Worlds," "Section 31," "Worf: The College Years") that are on Paramount+ exclusively.

Home Video Editions Galore!

For those of us who are still hooked on physical media, "Star Trek" is pretty widely available. While "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" have only been released on DVD — and will likely never get a proper Blu-ray release –  the original series, the animated series, NextGen, and "Enterprise" have all been released on Blu-ray. There is a very nice Complete Series Blu-ray  of "Enterprise" available for about $70 on Amazon and other online sellers, and single seasons, while initially expensive, are now a steal at under $20 each through most online shops.

The 2005 DVDs of "Enterprise" are not actively in print, but they are widely available on the second-hand market. These were particularly notable because of the weird, oversized plastic shells that snapped around the DVD cases. This ensured that they would never fit well on any shelves. The oversized boxes, however, made them easy to spot them at the DVD shop. The DVD shop that you physically entered in order to buy your physical media. It was a thing. It was a thing we all used to do. "Enterprise" was not released on VHS in the United States, but there were VHS releases in England and in Ireland. If you have them, you have something rare indeed.

Sneak Peek: Scott Bakula Previews NCIS: New Orleans

If you're seeking a metaphor for acting, you couldn't do much better than the body-jumping premise of Quantum Leap. In the 21 years since that series went off the air, its star, Scott Bakula, has leaped into a striking array of characters, with an initial emphasis on more sci-fi (Star Trek: Enterprise) eventually offset by a turn toward naturalistic dramedy (Men of a Certain Age). But playing a cop on a network procedural? Inexplicably, that seemingly inevitable move had proven a leap too far. This oversight has finally been rectified with Bakula's role as the lead in NCIS: New Orleans, premiering on CBS Sept. 23 in the coveted Tuesday time slot immediately following the franchise's flagship series...

Although it only lasted for three seasons in the 1960s, the original Star Trek has become one of the most influential TV series---and pieces of science fiction in any medium---of all time. Creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision focuses on exploration rather than conflict, as the starship Enterprise seeks out "new life and new civilizations." Led by William Shatner's hotheaded Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's logical Vulcan Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley's irascible Dr. McCoy, Star Trek remains a sci-fi gold standard.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek are streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Thanks to the popularity of Star Trek reruns, NBC brought back Gene Roddenberry and many of the show's writers and actors for this animated version, which lasted for two seasons in the 1970s. It follows the continuing adventures of the Enterprise crew and has been considered an extension of the original series, with characters and concepts that later made their way into live-action. The animation may be rudimentary, but the stories are every bit as thoughtful and layered as the episodes of the original series.

Seasons 1-2 of Star Trek: The Animated Series are streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Following the continued success of Star Trek reruns and theatrical films, creator Gene Roddenberry launched a new series with a new Enterprise crew, set even further in the future. Starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, The Next Generation continues Roddenberry's focus on a harmonious future, while expanding on alien races and galactic regions introduced in the original series. Co-starring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and more, The Next Generation has become every bit as iconic as its predecessor, setting the stage for decades of Trek to come.

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: The Next Generation are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Overlapping with the end of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine is the first Star Trek series to take place away from the Enterprise, set on a space station located in a volatile area of the galaxy. Avery Brooks leads the series as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, overseeing an unpredictable crew of Starfleet officers and alien allies, along with an entire station's worth of residents and businesses. In its later seasons, Deep Space Nine introduced serialized storytelling to Trek for the first time, gaining a reputation as the darkest and most mature Trek series to date.

Returning to the exploratory missions of a starship, Voyager takes Star Trek into an entirely new quadrant of the galaxy. The crew of the titular vessel is transported via a mysterious energy wave into an area of space where Starfleet has never been. Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) must lead her crew on a long journey home, while navigating the unfamiliar threats in this strange new region. Voyager expands the scope of Star Trek's universe while introducing fan-favorite characters like the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the former Borg Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: Voyager are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A prequel set in the years before the formation of the galaxy-spanning United Federation of Planets, Enterprise takes place on the starship Enterprise a century before it's occupied by Capt. Kirk and his crew. The primarily human crew is led by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), as inhabitants of Earth are just beginning to explore the galaxy and encounter some of Star Trek's familiar alien races. Enterprise features a more action-oriented focus than previous Trek series, setting the tone for Trek series and movies to come, and its later seasons are driven by long-term serialized stories.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Enterprise are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

After a dormant period of more than a decade following the cancellation of Enterprise, Discovery brings Star Trek into the streaming era with another prequel. Set after Enterprise but before the original series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, the science officer on the starship Discovery. The first two seasons explore the early days of the Federation and revisit many classic Trek themes and characters. In later seasons, both the starship and the show are thrust forward hundreds of years into the future, truly going boldly where no Trek has gone before.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Discovery are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

In conjunction with Star Trek's streaming revival, this anthology of bite-size episodes provides supplemental stories for the new Trek era. Some are standalone pieces highlighting minor characters or side stories from Star Trek: Discovery, while others tie more closely to ongoing plots from Discovery (and later Star Trek: Picard as well). It's another way for Star Trek's creators to illustrate their expansive universe of galactic space exploration.

All episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a series set 20 years after Picard's last Star Trek appearance. The retired Picard returns to active duty with a new mission and a new crew, in a slower, more character-driven story than other Trek series. In addition to Stewart, actors from other past Trek series, including Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan, make appearances, as Picard struggles to find his place in a changed Starfleet that no longer reflects his values.

Seasons 1-2 of Star Trek: Picard are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s is also the first overtly comedic Trek series, focusing on a group of lower-level recruits who do all the grunt work on intergalactic voyages. Set around the end of the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era, Lower Decks takes place on the Cerritos, a Starfleet ship mostly assigned to minor missions. The creators combine gentle mockery with a deep love for and knowledge of Trek lore, which makes them perfect for taking the franchise down a peg.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek: Lower Decks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Star Trek returns to animation again for this family-friendly series aimed at bringing in a younger audience. Like Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy takes place in the remote Delta Quadrant, where a rowdy group of young aliens from a prison colony discover an abandoned Starfleet ship. They take control of the ship so they can escape their grim circumstances, in a harsh backwater beyond the reach of the United Federation of Planets. As they flee the colony's cruel overlord, they're trained in starship operations by a hologram of Voyager's legendary Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds takes place on the Enterprise before Capt. Kirk took over, when it was led by Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike is joined by younger versions of familiar characters who've served on the Enterprise, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). In contrast to the heavily serialized storytelling of other modern Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds focuses primarily on single-episode stories, enhancing its throwback style.

Season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

As the show that launched star trek into the streaming age prepares for its long goodbye, here's everything you need to know heading into season 5..

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

This week, Star Trek: Discovery boldly goes for one final adventure . After years of waiting—and knowing that this fifth season would be its last—the Trek show that launched the franchise’s current renaissance will begin its victory lap. But before that, it has been a while since Discovery was last on our screens—so here’s everything important to remember.

The 32nd Century Is Here to Stay

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

This one depends on how long you’ve been away from Discovery , really, but I’m sure there’s someone out there intrigued by the final season of a Star Trek show who’s maybe either not watched since the early days or wants to jump in on the last leg. So, if that’s you ... well, go watch the rest of the show first. It has its moments.

But if you insist: Discovery has not been the pre-original- Trek show it started out as for a long while now. At the end of season two, the crew and the Discovery itself were flung far, far into the future in order to close the loop on a potential galaxy-ending threat that meant they could never return to their original timeline in the 23rd century. Ever since, they have been at the furthest point a Star Trek show has ever consistently gone to, even beyond the far future glimpsed in Enterprise ’s Temporal Cold War storyline: the 32nd century.

Things are, to be clear, not 100% great at this moment in time, state of the galaxy-wise. Before Discovery showed up, the Federation’s myriad member worlds and Starfleet had been completely torn apart by a cataclysmic event called “The Burn,” the simultaneous detonation of dilithium across known space which rendered warp travel—and thus the existence of interstellar society as it had existed for over a thousand years—extremely difficult.

Discovery helped solve that problem, slowly but surely allowing Starfleet to rebuild, but not before it faced another cataclysmic threat called the Dark Matter Anomaly, or DMA, a not-so-random “random” gravitational event that kept showing up and destroying entire worlds in storms of debris and chaos. Turns out the DMA was actually the product of an extra-galactic race known only as the Ten-C, which, once again, Discovery helped solve the problem with after successfully making First Contact with the beings. Hopefully things calm down a bit in terms of existence-threatening cataclysms in season five!

The Vulcans and Humans Just Nearly Lost Their Homes

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

Speaking of that, Discovery ’s fourth season climaxed with both Earth and Ni’Var—the rechristened homeworld of the Vulcans and Romulans, who have been re-united as sibling peoples by the 32nd century—under the direct threat of the DMA, necessitating the almost total-evacuation of the worlds as they faced destruction from showers of debris. Thanks to Captain Burnham and the Discovery crew’s intervention, the DMA was stopped just before all this happened—and most of the populations of Earth and Ni’Var, but not all of them, had been evacuated by Starfleet.

We don’t know quite how much time has passed between the events of season four and five (it’s been over two years in reality, hence why you’re reading this catchup post), but don’t be surprised if at least some of this doesn’t get mentioned in early episodes as the universe and our heroes continue to deal with the ramifications. One of which being...

Earth Is Joining the Federation (Again)

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

One of the final scenes of Discovery ’s fourth season saw Captain Burnham and various Federation dignitaries play host to the arrival of the President of United Earth—as the world seeks to rejoin the Federation, as a show of thanks for Starfleet’s aid during the DMA crisis. It turns out that after the events of the Burn in the time between Discovery season two and three, Earth was one of the first member worlds to secede from the Federation, transforming itself into an isolationist, inward-looking, paranoid militaristic society that remained increasingly skeptical of the Federation’s capacity to survive over the course of seasons three and four. At least, until it got to see first-hand what unity and co-operation could still do in this changed and put-upon galaxy.

Also, this probably won’t come up in season five, but we should note that the President of United Earth who engages in this process to rejoin the Federation is played by famous Georgia Democrat (and avowed Trekkie) Stacey Abrams . Please do not try to think about squaring that with everything I just said about United Earth’s political attitudes, because Discovery sure as hell didn’t.

Michael and Book Are Parting... But Not for Long

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

One of the more emotional fallouts of season four’s plot with the DMA was the anomaly’s destruction of the planet Kwejian—the homeworld of Cleveland “Book” Booker, played by David Ajala, the smuggler turned paramour of Captain Burnham over the course of Discovery ’s third and fourth seasons. The loss of his home drove Book to surreptitiously betray Burnham and Starfleet to work with the rogue scientist Ruon Tarka, as they worked on a way to completely dissipate the DMA even after its true nature and extragalactic origins were discovered.

Booker saw the light by the end of the season, and nearly died in the process alongside Tarka, but after being saved by the Ten-C he turned himself over to the Federation to pay for siding with Tarka—pulling from Burnham’s side and from the home he’d made with her on Discovery , and assigned to community service, aiding Federation relief efforts on Europa for families impacted by the DMA’s fallout.

Good for You, Saru

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

Speaking of romantic dalliances, season four played up a lingering connection between Michael’s trusted friend and first officer, Saru, and Ambassador T’Rina, Ni’Var’s representative to the Federation—and after much invites to tea and will-they-won’t-they, finally made their feelings for each other clear in the finale of season four. Presumably that means we’ll get to see a lot more of the pair together in the final season—and the interesting romantic struggles of what happens when a senior officer on a starship and a Federation ambassador start courting. Hopefully there’s a happy ending for our put-upon Kelpian hero.

One of Discovery ’s Most Unique Technologies Is No More

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

One of the major technological aspects of Discovery introduced from the very beginning was its use of a “Spore Drive”—an unprecedented method of FTL travel that allowed the ship to avoid typical warp travel and issues and instead navigate its way along a mycelial network across subspace, allowing everything from long range travel to precise realspace jumping across. The Spore Drive made Discovery unique as a ship, both in its original time when the technology was first being secretly developed and even far into the 32nd century—especially after the events of the Burn made regular long-distance FTL through warp drives impossible at scale.

But during the events of season four’s finale, both the known Spore Drives in existence—the Discovery ’s and the one implemented into Book’s ship—were sacrificed in the attempt to stop Dr. Tarka’s plans to destroy the DMA. Discovery still has traditional warp drives as a back up for the Spore Drive, but still, the loss of what became a key defining part of Discovery ’s worldbuilding will no doubt come up in season five.

Tilly’s Back

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

The beloved former cadet (now Lieutenant JG, by the time of season four) Sylvia Tilly shocked Discovery fans when she seemingly left the show early into the last season , when she took an offered teaching position at the re-building Starfleet Academy. While Tilly was absent for much of season four, she did return for the finale, helping Starfleet command in the evacuation of Earth, and celebrated with her former crewmates. Just how and why remains to be seen, but we do known from Tilly actress Mary Wiseman that she does indeed return to the Discovery during season five, but whatever happens, it may not be the last of Tilly we see, even as the show ends, because...

The Journey Never Ends

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

Star Trek ’s future is wide open right now , as the franchise navigates the ends of Discovery and Picard and looks to a future that balances together streaming shows, made-for-streaming movies like Section 31 and a potential Picard continuation, and multiple attempts to bring Trek back to theatrical superstardom. But one key part of that is crucial to Discovery : its exploration of the 32nd century won’t end when it does.

The one brand-new show we know is definitely still part of Trek ’s future at the moment is Starfleet Academy , set to begin filming this year, and will follow the prestigious institute during the 32nd century time period, rather than going back to the Trek eras established in other shows. That’s all we know at this point—we don’t know if Mary Wiseman could potentially be a key star for the series, or anyone else affiliated with Discovery , or even which students will be the focus of the series. But it does mean that even as Discovery bids farewell, the world it has established will keep boldly going beyond it.

Star trek: legacy gets boost as new report teases picard follow-up movie.

The proposed continuation for Star Trek: Picard season 3 dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may become a streaming movie according to a new report.

  • Star Trek: Legacy may become a movie instead of a TV series.
  • Rumored Star Trek streaming movie "Legacy" may happen if Section 31 succeeds, says Variety report.
  • Star Trek: Legacy has been campaigned for by fans since Picard season 3 ended.

Star Trek: Legacy , the rumored follow-up series to Star Trek: Picard , gets an update courtesy of a new report. In addition to reuniting the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for one last mission, Picard season 3 set up a new Star Trek show featuring Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as commander of the USS Enterprise-G, tentatively titled Star Trek: Legacy . The cast ideally would include Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) as First Officer; Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), as well as several returning Picard characters.

A new Variety cover story about the future of the Star Trek franchise includes a long-awaited, albeit brief, update on the possibility of Star Trek: Legacy happening as a Star Trek streaming movie made for Paramount+ if Star Trek: Section 31 is a success. Read the quote below:

And Kurtzman is already eyeing more opportunities for TV movies, including a possible follow-up to “Picard.”

Star Trek Picard Season 3 Ending Explained (In Detail)

Why hasn't star trek: legacy been confirmed yet, short answer: money..

The fan-led campaigns to greenlight Star Trek: Legacy certainly show that demand for the new Star Trek: Picard spinoff exists, but demand alone isn't enough to warrant a whole new Star Trek series going into production. Even though Picard season 3 clearly set up Legacy , with its potential cast of new characters, Captain Seven catchphrase cliffhanger, and even a visit from Q (John de Lancie), there was never a guarantee that the premise would result in a multi-episode, ongoing Star Trek show, especially with 3 other Star Trek shows currently in production.

The new Variety report suggests that Star Trek: Legacy may come to exist as a streaming Star Trek movie, which would be a more financially sound move , even if it isn't exactly what fans have been clamoring for. Star Trek: Section 31 was intended as a series before being modified into a more cost-effective feature-length telefilm, and its success could lay the groundwork for a collection of similar Star Trek content on Paramount+. Legacy as a Star Trek movie may not be ideal, but it would still see the continuing adventures of the USS Enterprise-G crew, and that's better than no Star Trek: Legacy at all.

WA ‘Star Trek’ fan leaves behind a massive collection like none other

Troy Nelson and his younger brother Andrew were almost inseparable.

The two youngest of six, they were born two years apart. They lived together in their childhood home in Bremerton, Washington, for more than half a century. Near their home, there is a park bench on which they carved their initials as young boys.

The Nelson brothers never married or had children. They worked together at the same senior home. They even once, as teenagers, dated the same girl at the same time while working different shifts at the same pizza shop. This lasted a week until they realized it.

“Two parts of one body,” Evan Browne, their older sister, said of their relationship in an interview.

On Feb. 28, Andrew Nelson, who had been treated for cancer for years, went to feed the chickens and ducks that were gifts from Browne to her brothers. He had a heart attack and died. He was 55. Just hours later, Troy Nelson, who was stricken with grief, took his own life. He was 57.

“He had talked about it before,” Browne, 66, said, tearfully. “He said, ‘Hey, if Andrew goes, I’m out of here. I’m checking out.’ Andrew would say the same thing, and then it really happened .”

Where to find help

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or have concerns about someone else who may be, call the the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988. You will be routed to a local crisis center where professionals can talk you through a risk assessment and provide resources in your community.

What Troy Nelson left behind has become a sensation. After his death, family members posted pictures on social media of his massive — and, really, the keyword is massive — collection of “Star Trek” memorabilia, which have now been shared thousands of times.

The items took up two living rooms and a bedroom, all lined with bookshelves, according to Elena Hamel, one of the brothers’ nieces. The centers of the rooms were lined with additional bookshelves — all packed to the brim — to create aisles. There were jewelry cabinets serving as display cases.

The shelves contained action figures. Dolls. Models of ships. Posters. Ornaments. Lunchboxes. Legos. Several toy phasers and tricorders. (For non-Trek fans, the phaser is a weapon, and a tricorder is, essentially, a fancy smartphone.) Multiple “Star Trek” lamps. (Yes, there are “Star Trek” lamps.) Trading cards. Comic books. Trek-themed Geeki Tikis (stylized tiki mugs). Life-size cutouts of famous characters. A life-size captain’s chair.

While it’s impossible to account for every private collector in the world, Troy Nelson’s collection is almost assuredly among the largest — if not the largest.

The last additions to the collection came in the final weeks of his life: Stuffed rabbits in “Star Trek” uniforms. “I’ve never seen a collection that size,” said Russ Haslage, the president of the International Federation of Trekkers, a “Star Trek”-themed nonprofit that Haslage founded with Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the franchise.

Haslage’s organization opened in 2020 a “Star Trek” museum in Sandusky, Ohio, that has received donations of memorabilia from estates. Those collections “pale in comparison” to Troy Nelson’s, he said. (Haslage has reached out to the family to ask about donations from the collection.)

The older brother’s love of “Star Trek” began with the original series, which he’d watch with his siblings.

“It was our dinner meal,” Browne said. “When we had dinner, we were sitting in front of ‘Star Trek.’”

Troy Nelson began collecting in the late 1970s. His first acquisition was a model version of the Starship Enterprise. Then came Star Trek conventions. Why the franchise was such a draw to him remains a mystery to his family.

“I really can’t say. I mean, other than the fact that he was brainwashed with it at dinner time,” Browne said, laughing. “That sounds ridiculous. When we grew up, it’s like, ‘Dinner is at this time. And if you don’t get here at this time, you don’t get dinner.’ So it might’ve been a comfort for him .”

Troy Nelson would often monitor sites like eBay for items he didn’t have. On several occasions, he would express frustration on losing out on an item before being able to bid on it. Until he found out the reason.

“Andrew already got it for him,” Browne recalled.

Obsessive “Star Trek” fandom has long become an indelible part of pop culture, especially as the franchise — which has spawned several television series, movies, novels and comics — has been a long-running institution. There have been documentaries that have studied the subject, such as “Trekkies” in 1997. It’s been lampooned on “The Simpsons,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Family Guy,” and become a story line in an episode of “The West Wing,” among many others. For dedicated fans, accruing collectibles isn’t uncommon.

“When you collect these things, you’re closer to that genre that you enjoy so much,” Haslage said. “When I first started in 1979, I was grabbing everything I could get my hands on because it was cool, and it was a piece of the whole ‘Star Trek’ mythos. If you have these pieces, you’re a part of that universe in some way.”

It turns out that collecting is a pursuit that runs in the family.

Andrew Nelson collected mall swords, Ryobi-branded tools and statues of warrior women, like Xena, the warrior princess.

Browne’s house has a wall with thousands of smashed pennies and her living room windows are full of glass sugar and creamer bowls.

Browne’s father, Bud Peers, collected salt and pepper shakers, guns and knives. Troy and Andrew’s father, Norman Nelson, collected scrap metal and wood.

Hamel has 17 Christmas trees, all fully decorated with separate themes.

Browne’s son, Michael, who is 36, collects anything and everything related to black bears.

“When you have a large collection like that and it’s displayed like that,” Hamel said, “and it’s something that is important to you, it’s often really calming to be in a space like that. It’s just all the things that you love. It’s soothing.”

As far as Browne knew, Troy had no history of mental illness or any previous suicide attempts. After Andrew died, she received a distraught and frantic call from Troy with the news. She told him that she was on her way.

Browne said she called him when she got to the Tacoma Bridge. No answer. And then again, at the Manette Bridge. No answer. When she reached their home, the back door was open. And then she found him. The phone call was the last time they spoke.

Troy Nelson did not leave a note but did leave some things meticulously arranged by his computer, including a key to the house, burial plans for the two brothers, and bills.

“ I don’t know really what I thought,” Browne said. “All I could do was just scream.”

The Nelson family is boxing up Troy’s “Star Trek” collection to prepare it for auction. Andrew’s ashes will be placed in an urn carved in the likeness of supermodel Bettie Page. (He was a fan.) Troy’s ashes will be placed in a “Star Trek” lunchbox.

Along with the Starship Enterprise's new Science Lab and Spock's colorful new hazmat suit, Variety 's Star Trek cover story has some tantalizing new information about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 . Jonathan Frakes will direct a Strange New Worlds season 3 episode described as a " Hollywood murder mystery." Maybe!” Indeed, Melissa Navia, who plays Lt. Erica Ortegas, told the audience at ST-SF: Trek to San Francisco that "incredible things" are coming in Strange New Worlds season 3 . The Pool

Two new Australian films, both enjoying their world premiere, are among the first titles confirmed to play at the Sydney Film Festival in June.

“In Vitro,” a sci-fi mystery thriller set on a remote cattle farm in the near future, hails from directors Will Howarth and Tom McKeith (“Beast”) and stars Ashley Zukerman (“Succession”).

With “The Pool,” director Ian Darling (“The Final Quarter”) paints a cinematic portrait of a year in the life of the iconic Bondi Icebergs, the pool and the people who cherish it.

The festival will run June 5-16 and announce its full lineup on May 8.

Other titles getting a jump on that announcement include “The Rye Horn,” winner of the Golden Shell for best film at San Sebastián, last year; Agnieszka Holland’s refugee thriller “Green Border,” which raised the ire of some Polish politicians and inspired protests before setting a box office record, and “Pepe,” which won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in February. The film tells the true-ish story of Pepe the hippo who broke free of Pablo Escobar’s private zoo.

“Explanation for Everything” is a Hungarian satire about the culture wars where a student accidentally becomes a figurehead for the right when he is embroiled in a national scandal. The film won the Orizzonti Award for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival.

One of the hits of Berlinale 2024, “Sex” follows two married and ostensibly heterosexual chimneysweeps who are unmoored when one of them sleeps with a man and the other begins to question the recurring dreams he’s been having about David Bowie.

“Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros” sees documentary icon Frederick Wiseman (“City Hall”) return with an epic set in a three-Michelin-star French restaurant.

Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios (A Cop Movie, SFF 2021) recruits Rooney Mara and Raúl Briones in comedic drama “La Cocina,” set during the hectic lunch rush at a New York restaurant. “House of the Seasons” is an intergenerational family saga set in a tofu factory in Daegu, Korea, which was an award winner at the Busan festival last year.

Other early selections include documentaries “COPA ’71,” which presents the untold story of the 1971 Women’s Soccer World Cup and exposes systemic sexism with governing bodies, and Kenya-set “The Battle for Laikipia,” Olivier Assayas’ most personal film, “Suspended Time,” and Bhutan director Pawo Choyning Dorji’s Oscar-nominated “The Monk and The Gun.”

The festival is also planning film and live music event “Hear My Eyes: Hellraiser,” comprising Clive Barker’s 1987 extra-dimensional horror classic, re-scored live by EBM explorers Hieroglyphic Being and Robin Fox, and a synched laser-art show at City Recital Hall.
