Lizzo review, O2 Arena: Pop powerhouse proves she’s a musician for the ages

With spine-tingling vocals and high-energy twerk routines, lizzo shows off her extraordinary talents in a much-deserved sell-out show, article bookmarked.

“Hi, motherf***er, did you miss me?” Lizzo opens the show with the sing-song taunt of her 2022 song “The Sign”. Judging from the roar that subsequently fills the O2 Arena, the answer is clearly, yes. It’s the first time that the 34-year-old empowerment pop-soul sensation has headlined an arena tour in the UK but she’s familiar with this side of the pond. During her early years on the scene in the 2010s, Lizzo played in the country’s various bars and small venues. Smallest venues, even. “We went from getting f***ed up in the Travelodge to selling out the O2 twice!” she exclaims later.

Riding high from her Record of the Year win at last month’s Grammys – her fourth award in total – singer-cum-flautist-cum-twerk icon Lizzo (aka Melissa Jefferson) is closing out the European leg of the Special world tour, named after her acclaimed 2022 album. Lizzo’s mainstream breakthrough arrived in 2019 when a two-year-old song found new life thanks to the Netflix romcom Someone Great . “Truth Hurts” – and its now-iconic lyrics proclaiming to be “100 per cent that b****” – helped Lizzo’s status, together with her catalogue of self-love manifesto bops, rocket to stardom. She’s stayed there ever since.

In an industry that has long awarded privileges to slim, white bodies, Lizzo loudly and proudly defies both. She demands that people notice her, and preaches the value of others doing the same. Lizzo is so fresh and exciting a cultural entity, however, that her actual talent is sometimes the last thing that comes to mind when you think of her. This two-hour set, packed with spine-tingling belted vocals, trilling flute solos, and high-energy dance routines, is a firm reminder that Lizzo is more than a cultural figure; she’s a musician for the ages.

Lyrics like “I’m my own soulmate / I know how to love me” might grate some in the real world, but tonight – performed with gusto and a beaming smile – they’re irresistibly charming. Likewise, Lizzo’s dance troupe prove they aren’t solely some advertisement for body diversity. Watching the Big Grrls, mostly curvy and plus-sized women, deliver both full-force twerk moments and majorette-style routines with equal ease is undeniably powerful.

Lizzo is particularly engaging when she wrestles with the public perception of herself. On “Rumours”, she addresses internet rumours as headlines such as “Lizzo’s pregnant!” and “Lizzo got surgery” float on the screen behind her. (Cardi B makes a fun cameo appearance to lip-sync her verse in a pre-recorded FaceTime call.) It’s clear that, despite her confidence, Lizzo is not immune to harsh words about her music, her diet, or her choice to dance in a bikini. When she performs “Special”, her voice is crisp and clear through a rap that earnestly asks why people dedicate whole videos to criticising her. She’s at her most vulnerable during “Naked”. In the stillest moment of the show, Lizzo stands in dim light, wearing a nude leotard and lets her strong vocals do the talking.

  • Miley Cyrus, Endless Summer Vacation review: A lovely, long bask in the pop star’s maturing talent
  • Slowthai, UGLY review: Northampton rapper barrels toward self-revelation in thrilling, grimey fashion
  • P!nk review, Trustfall: Pop artist’s mix of dance-pop, folk and rock feels oddly unsettled

As much as this is a showcase for Lizzo’s musical talent, it’s evident she knows how to work a crowd. With humour and warmth, she delivers birthday wishes and does her best Adele impression. “Hiya babes!” she chirps in a Cockney accent. Lizzo even shouts out the TFL strikers. “Even if it takes me 12 hours to get here, I stand behind anyone fighting for what they f***ing deserve!” she shouts to rapturous applause.

Lizzo ends the night with her Grammy-winning single of the year, encouraging us all to let go of our stresses on the disco-inspired “About Damn Time”. As a sparkling glitter ball splashes shards of light across the arena, the air feels celebratory and refreshed. Lizzo belongs on a stage as big as this; it’s about damn time she played the O2. Sorry, Travelodge.

Lizzo at the O2 review: one of life’s best natural highs

Lizzo Performs At The O2 Arena

Part performer, part life coach , Melissa “ Lizzo ” Jefferson was preaching the radical power of self-love long before it was in fashion. A decade on from her debut, the multiple Grammy-winner has now firmly infiltrated the mainstream with her agenda, influencing millions with her body-positive bangers.

Finishing up her European tour at the O2 Arena last night, the US singer-songwriter remained resolute in her mission to uplift and empower. Supported by an all-female backing band and the plus-size dance troupe she recruited on her Emmy-winning Amazon series Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, she delivered a set of relentlessly joyous disco-pop regularly interspersed with motivational speeches, both live and pre-recorded.

Subtle it wasn’t, and by the third time she’d told the crowd they were beautiful, more cynical audience members might have been forgiven for rolling their eyes. That it didn’t occur to those in attendence last night is testament to Lizzo’s immense charisma and the environment of pure fun she fostered.

The Eighties-inspired 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready) came complete with aerobics-style choreography, and Soulmate saw her twerking in blue diamante to bars delivered by her DJ, Sophia Eris. There were Chaka Khan and Lauryn Hill covers, featuring Lizzo’s powerhouse vocals embellished by exquisite harmonies from backing vocalists Little Bigs. During Coldplay she solo-ed on Sasha Flute (a flute that has its own Instagram account), while Naked saw her underscoring a woman’s right to bodily autonomy, projecting “My body my choice,” onto her flesh-coloured catsuit.

Interestingly, the night’s most powerful moments arrived when the music stopped. Moved to tears at the end of Special, she told the audience, “I’m milking this,” and enjoyed an arena-wide ovation that steadily grew in intensity. Then, following a barnstorming rendition of Truth Hurts, she spent upwards of eight minutes complimenting audience members on their outfits, before autographing a woman’s breast to provide a template for a tattoo.

This overwhelming atmosphere of love and acceptance more than made up for any of the less inspiring material from her latest LP, and succeeded in elevating Lizzo-classics like Juice and Cuz I Love You to another level entirely.

Which all augurs extremely well for this summer’s co-headline slot at Glastonbury . Because if performances like these prove anything, it’s that a good Lizzo show ranks up there with the very best of life’s natural highs.

Lizzo's the special tour uk dates, lizzo has added another date to her 2023 uk tour.

lizzo uk tour o2

She's been twerking at the Emmys and winning at the MTV VMAs , and on 23 Sept., Lizzo kicked off her "The Special Tour" in Florida. As the singer continues to make waves in the US, fans in the UK might have been feeling as though they'll never get a chance to see the "Juice" star in real life. Well, that's all about to change next year.

On 3 Oct., Lizzo announced the European leg of her tour, which includes two dates at London's O2 Arena to end her feel-good tour. The 34-year-old will be opening in Oslo, Norway, on 17 Feb., 2023, before hitting cities including Amsterdam, Milan, and Paris. Lizzo then arrives in the UK to take to her show on the road in Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Dublin, and London in March 2023.

The tour supports her latest album, "Special", so fans can expect those infectious tunes we've grown to love like " About Damn Time " and " 2 B Loved (Am I Ready) ". It's likely Sasha Flute will be getting a little time in the spotlight, too. As if seeing the Yitty owner isn't enough, the phenomenal Joy Crookes will be supporting the star for all the UK dates. And, due to popular demand (obviously) the star has added another London date. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on 11 October, so be ready.

We're all in agreement that it really is "About Damn Time" the singer lights up the UK, so set your alarms to get your hands on those tickets.

Lizzo announces UK and Europe ‘The Special Tour’ dates

Lizzo is heading to the uk for four nights of 'the special tour'..

By Emily Maskell

Lizzo

It’s about damn time! Lizzo has announced the UK and Europe leg of her 2023 ‘The Special Tour’.

Announcing a string of dates for spring 2023, the Grammy award-winning singer tweeted: “It’s about damn time The Special Tour came to the UK and Europe.”

ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME THE SPECIAL TOUR CAME TO THE UK AND EUROPE! YALL BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE — UK & EU GET UR TIX 10/7 AT 12PM LOCAL TIME. pic.twitter.com/BPzlppVQW4 — FOLLOW @YITTY (@lizzo) October 3, 2022

Lizzo’s European dates begin in Oslo on 17 February and conclude at The O2 in London on 15 March.

She has four UK pitstops (Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, and London) alongside one night in Dublin through March.

The 34-year-old singer will be joined by Brit Award nominee Joy Crooks as the support act on the UK dates.

Tickets go on general sale at 12 pm on Friday (7 October) – find a show near you and more information here .

‘Truth Hurts’ hitmaker Lizzo previously left LGBTQ+ fans delighted with the uplifting message of her track ‘Everybody’s Gay’ .

Lizzo debuted the song in June at a West Hollywood tribute show by RuPaul’s Drag Race season 14-star Kornbread in front of an adoring crowd.

The chorus is an eruption of energy as Lizzo sings: “Dance the night away (Keep your p***y poppin’, pop those percolates). Everybody’s gay, yeah (It’s a happy place in here, baby, you’re safe). We can take our mask off. We can all ball and parlay. I can hardly wait.”

“I wanted to write a fantasy song, like one of those Hollywood songs where you’re taken away to a picture that I’m painting, a dream sequence kind of thing,” Lizzo told Apple Music . She noted that ‘Everybody’s Gay’ is the album’s centrepiece.

“And no, when I sing ‘Take your mask off,’ I didn’t mean your N95,” she adds. “I meant like the mask of the person that you have to uphold when you’re out in the world… Take that off, because we accept you for who you are in this space.”

Lizzo UK tour 2023: Tickets for Manchester, Glasgow, O2 London and everything you need to know

Doing these things may boost your chances of getting tickets to see Lizzo next year

  • 09:45, 7 OCT 2022

Lizzo wore a beautifully intricate beaded Thom Browne coat – carrying her trusty flute as an accessory. “I feel like a piece of art,” she said on the red carpet – while intermittently serenading photographers with her flute.

Fans will be able to buy tickets to Lizzo's 2023 'Special Tour' as general sale opens today, October, 7, at midday. Tickets can be bought on Ticketmaster as soon as the sale starts at 12pm.

The tour is in celebration of her latest album 'Special', released in July this year it features 12 breakout tracks, including the Billboard Top 100 single 'About Damn Time'. Other tracks on the album are 'The Sign', 'Grrrls' and the R&B inspired 'Break Up Twice'.

On the UK leg of the 'Special Tour' she will be supported by singer songwriter Joy Crookes, who has quickly become an instrumental voice in the British music scene. As well as a bunch of outfit changes and dance routines Lizzo is also known to wow live crowds with breakout flute solos, combining her classical music training with R&B soul style.

READ MORE: Live: Lizzo 'Special Tour' 2023 tickets go on sale, price, availability and nearby shows

With no Liverpool date the confirmed UK venues are London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester being the closest show. Demand to get tickets is expected to be high, with just four UK venues announced, and a host of presale options available to buy earlier in the week, general sale tickets may go quickly.

Trying to buy tickets for a popular gig can be stressful, especially if huge numbers of tickets were sold during presale. Waiting to click into the queue can be the deciding factor between securing tickets and not. To help fans waiting to get Lizzo tickets today, we've put together a list of tried and tested tips to help fans get to the front of the online queue, whether buying through Ticketmaster or any verified ticket account.

Get your Ticketmaster account ready

Having a Ticketmaster account ready and raring to go can boost your chances of getting tickets, and will only speed up the checkout process. Creating an account a couple of hours before tickets go live and setting up, or remembering your password, means you won't have to do this as the general sale opens. To help, create a Ticketmaster account, add in all personal details including the same name on your bank card.

Some venues check on entry to see if the ticket holder name matches your ID, and if it doesn't fans may be refused entry on the night. This is why buying resale tickets from unverified platforms can cause issues, as if the name on the ticket isn't officially updated, fans will be refused entry. General sale for Lizzo opens Friday, October 7 at midday.

Check your payment details

This brings us on to our next point, similar to ticketholder names, the cardholder name on the main bank card should be the same. We suggest updating your card details, or ensuring the card held on your Ticketmaster account hasn't expired, so that when you get to the front of the queue to buy tickets , there are no holdups.

This is essential to do if you aren't getting online tickets, if getting tickets in the post or collecting at the box office the details have to be correct to receive them.

Try with as many devices as possible

When it comes to buying tickets on the day, the best way we've found to increase chances of getting tickets is to join the queue on more than one device. Phone, laptop, tablet, PC the more devices the better chances of beating the potential thousands of people in front of you.

Once the queue opens this will also give you the chance to see which goes faster and evidently buy from that device. Logging into Ticketmaster on all the devices takes time, so make sure there's at least an hour to go. Ticketmaster also has a mobile app that works with majority of smartphones including iPhone and Android.

As well as having more than one device, another tried and tested tip is to open more than one browser on each device, joining the queue for multiple dates and buying tickets for the one you get to first. Seeing as Lizzo isn't playing in Liverpool, Manchester may sell out quite quickly, so flexibility with venues may be your best bet at getting to see her perform live.

Try the 20 minute rule

This is said to be the best time to log on, as it gives fans plenty of time to join on multiple devices but also be ready and waiting for when the waiting room opens. The waiting room is the holding room that fans can enter and queue before the main ticket queue opens. That means as soon as the ticket count down hits fans are directly put into the queue.

Lizzo at O2 Brixton Academy - setlist, stage times, tickets and more

The Cuz I Love You Too Tour is coming to London for two nights

  • 14:41, 4 NOV 2019

lizzo uk tour o2

Lizzo is bringing the Cuz I Love You Too Tour to the UK this month.

She'll headline two shows at the O2 Brixton Academy on November 6-7.

It's in support of her breakthrough debut album 'Cuz I Love You' which features singles 'Juice' and 'Tempo'.

Fans can also expect to hear one of the longest running number one female rap songs 'Truth Hurts' as well as 'Boys' and 'Good As Hell', plus a flute number which saw her go viral a year ago.

Tickets were in high demand when they went on sale earlier this year, so the artist added a second date in London.

If you were lucky enough to get one then you can find out stage times, setlist and support act info below.

Can I still get tickets?

The shows are officially sold out. Typically production tickets are released to the general public the day before or day of the show, so keep an eye out on Ticketmaster and Live Nation.

Alternatively you can get resale tickets from fan-to-fan site Twickets. Go to www.twickets.live and sign up or log into your account, then you can set up an alert for Lizzo tickets so you'll be notified when any have been listed.

But once you get an email or text to say they've been listed you'll have to be quick as they're likely to be snapped up.

What are the stage times?

O2 Brixton Academy tweeted to fans: "We don't post set times but doors open at 7pm and we'll post support information once we have it on the day".

However the first night of the European tour in Paris had the following set times, so you can expect something similar in London:

DJ Sophia Eris: 8pm

What will the setlist be?

lizzo uk tour o2

During the US leg of the tour Lizzo played the following setlist, so it's likely that similar songs will appear during the European's run setlist:

Heaven Help Me

Cuz I Love You

Exactly How I Feel

“Gigolo” Game / Like a Girl

Good as Hell

Truth Hurts

Heaven Help Me (Flute Solo Only)

Who's the support act?

Lizzo will be supported by DJ Sophia Eris who's been touring with her across the Cuz I Love You Too Tour as well as earlier this year at the O2 Forum Kentish Town shows during part one of the world tour.

You can expect to hear plenty of rap and hip hop classics including Lil Kim, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Nicki Minaj and newer acts like Megan Thee Stallion.

About Lizzo

A 3x GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and so much more, Lizzo has shifted the sound, soul, and spirit of popular music and culture. 2019’s now-classic, RIAA platinum-certified debut album,  CUZ I LOVE YOU , bowed at #4 on the Billboard 200, fueled in part by such history-making hits as the platinum-certified “Tempo (Feat. Missy Elliott),” the 2x platinum “Juice,” the 4x platinum “Good As Hell,” and the 7x platinum “Truth Hurts.” The latter of which ascended to #1 on  Billboard ’s “Hot 100,” affirming Lizzo as only the third female rapper to top the chart without a featured artist, as well as the first black solo female R&B singer to claim the top spot since 2012. “Truth Hurts” dominated the chart for seven weeks, further making history as the longest-running #1 by a solo female rap artist ever. Named by Rolling Stone as one of the “500 Greatest Songs Of All Time,” “Truth Hurts” went on to earn a 2020 GRAMMY® Award for “Best Pop Solo Performance,” with  CUZ I LOVE YOU (DELUXE)  receiving that year’s GRAMMY® for “Best Urban Contemporary Album” and “Jerome” earning “Best Traditional R&B Performance.”

Crowned 2019’s “Entertainer of the Year” by both  TIME  and  Entertainment Weekly , Lizzo has adorned the covers of countless publications around the globe, spanning  Rolling Stone ,  Billboard ,  Elle ,  British Vogue , and many more. Expanding her imprint and influence across media, Lizzo lent her voice to the 2019 animated film, UglyDolls , and joined Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, and Cardi B in the all-star cast of that same year’s critically acclaimed  Hustlers .

Lizzo maintained this unstoppable momentum on 2021’s RIAA gold-certified “ Rumors (Feat. Love Lizzo? Presale tickets for UK tour 2023 available for Three & O2 customers

O2 Priority grants pre-sale for all four UK 2023 shows, while the Three+ app offers pre-sale for Manchester

Lizzo

Love Lizzo? Of course you do, who doesn't? The US star announced her UK tour just days ago – and certain UK mobile network customers can get their hands on tickets right now.

Yup, you read that correctly, right now – which is a full 48 hours ahead of the general on-sale date for other customers, commencing 7 October 2022.

Three UK customers can get early purchase access for the Manchester show, taking place on 11 March 2023. O2 Priority grants customers early purchase access primarily for the London show, taking place on 15 March 2023 (at The O2, but of course), but the other three shows (Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester) will also be available according to O2's website .

If you're a Three network customer and have your heart set on her Manchester show to go sing your heart out, you'll want to open the Three+ rewards app where the Tickets section should contain all the info (if you've previously registered). O2 Priority, meanwhile, is available via the network's Priority app or its dedicated website .

The offer is restricted to one per customer, purchasing up to four presale tickets. It's on a first-come, first-served basis, assuming it doesn't sell out in a matter of seconds.

Not a customer of either network? Ticketmaster is the only other seller , where tickets go on sale from noon on 7 October 2022. There are four UK dates, details as follows, so good luck bagging your ideal location and date:

  • Wed 8 March 2023: Glasgow at OVO Hydro
  • Thur 9 March 2023: Birmingham at Utilita Arena
  • Sat 11 March 2023: Manchester at AO Arena
  • Wed 15 March 2023: London at The O2

NME  reviewed ‘Tangk’ when it was released last February, calling it “the most open-hearted we’ve ever seen them” in a four star review . “The record ends not on a scream but on the peaceful and jazzy full stop of ‘Monolith’ as the frontman serenely concludes: “I found myself my own king, I took his crown, I took his rings”.

“Removing our fat-fingered monarch’s jewels isn’t as much a ‘fuck you’ to the establishment here as realising that without self-worth and a little gratitude, you’re nothing. Anger is an energy, but love is the answer, they pose.”

We also caught up with frontman Joe Talbot for an extended In Conversation chat about the making of ‘Tangk’ and its approach to love: “I’m interested in showing the different facets of love that are not so conventional, but are very fucking important: empathy, patience, honesty, communion, hard work, recovery, forgiveness. That’s what I wrote about.

“I’m still there. I’m still going to need to go through it, and I’m still very much interested in writing about love forevermore. I find it fascinating and empowering.”

In other news, IDLES have spoken out about whether they could potentially headline Glastonbury in the future .
