Logic, born January 22nd 1990 is a rapper from Maryland, USA. In the last five years, he has built up a loyal Internet following, and is signed to Visionary Music Group and Def Jam Recordings.

Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, better known by his pseudonym, Logic, was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He comes from humble beginnings, and didn’t graduate from high school. He began skipping classes in the tenth grade, when he started to do badly in every class. He was later expelled, but he used his new found free time to pursue his music career in full force.

At the young age of 13, Logic met his mentor, Solomon Taylor. When he was sixteen, Taylor brought him a bundle of CDs with beats on to write over. At the time, he was going by the name “Psychological” which is a word that he really identified with, and released an unofficial mixtape entitled “Psychological: The Mixtape” A couple of years on, and Logic opened for Pitbull, Ludacris and Method Man at a show in Maryland. Shortly after, he decided to go by the name Logic instead.

On Decemeber 17th 2010, Logic released his first official mixtape entitled “Young, Broke and Infamous”, and two music videos alongside it for “Stain in the Game” and “Backpack”. It caught the attention of Chris Zarou, who wanted Logic to be a part of his upstart independent record label Visionary Music Group. It was his second mixtape “Young Sinatra” that really caught the attention of the masses, with songs such as “All I Do” and “Prime”. The “All I Do” video was the first video for Logic to reach over a million views on YouTube. By this point he had started a fire so big that it caught the attention of Def Jam, he took the next step in his career by signing with them, and on May 7th 2013, Logic released his fourth official mixtape, “Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever”, which reached 100,000 downloads in 24 hours. He embarked on a tour with Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Tyler, the Creator on “The Cud Life Tour 2013”.

Most recently, on September 15th 2014, Logic released a singled called “Under Pressure” which he declared was the title track of an album that he released on October 21st 2014.

Live reviews

I can’t think of many rappers who have the title of ‘Sir’ before their name, and this is one of the many things that makes Sir Robert Bryson Hall II stand out from the crowd. Logic initially gained a large internet following, before releasing his critically acclaimed mix tape Young Sinatra: Welcome Forever. Making a break through YouTube is an incredible challenge, and a real reflection of Logic’s rapping talent.

Logic is an incredible performer. He flawlessly flows through his beats and tunes, never slipping up or missing a lyric. Speaking of which, the powerful lyrics of this tracks really come to life in a live performance, and resonate even more deeply with the audience when you can hear it first hand. When he sang Walk On By, he had the crowd joining in and going crazy. He really knows how to motivate a crowd and get them on his side. I completely lost track of time, and the concert flew by. I would say, if you get the chance to see him, make sure it’s a long set!

I’m absolutely gutted that I saw him before the release of his epic debut album just this month, but that’s as good a reason as any for me to go back and see the genius perform again.

Chase Center SF 10/13/19 - Great show!! If you're at all concerned about his slow, jazzy, self-reflective numbers, don't be! The show was 100% energy. He ripped through his up tempo, rapid fire flow hits. Too many rappers won't do that fast rap live, Logic not only does it live, he does it every song. He even did the first half of his Homicide verse 5 or 6 times in a gimmick to get the audience jumping. Really fun show. YBN Cordae and JID opened, both were cool and fun to watch. Each came out for a song during Logic's set and you could really see the difference in how Logic completely commanded the stage. A little stiff and scripted with his crowd interaction, but seemed very genuine. Not a fan of huge venues (although the Chase Center is spectacular) but would see Logic again in a heartbeat.

Logic was great!! The other headliner sings about screwing girls in a pretty misogynistic way, but Logic just spreads peace, love, and positivity. He was super energetic and got the crowd pumped up. He produced new beats on stage which was awesome and he brought out his notebook where he had written new lyrics to perform for us. So humbling to witness the process in addition to the product! I would love to see him at a smaller venue where he could really connect with the crowd. Also, it's so cool to hear him rap at ridiculously fast paces. He's got superb talent and you should listen to his stuff and then go to his shows and experience the awe that comes with witnessing this amazing performer.

Best show I've been to! The vibes were amazing and everyone was truly there for the music. Logic is all about peace, love, and positivity and he brings that to the stage. He really loves his fans and encouraged everyone to treat each other like family. He gave shout outs to young kids in the crowd and even brought a couple girls on stage to rap with him.

Someone in the middle of the crowd got hurt and he immediately stopped the music and everything and had everyone clear a path and the security team carried the guy out to safety within seconds.

Support this amazing artist and get your tickets. I will never miss a Logic show!!

It was awesome! A lot of people got there pretty early to start lining up. It didn't take too long to see him perform and even if it did, it was worth it! When they let us in, they played the live recording of Jimmy Kimmel, and after that, some guy came out to get us hyped up. The music started playing and it went over like twice so the cameras can record good shots and footage from different angles. Once Logic came out, everyone was so hyped! He performed extra songs after the ones he needed to do for the show. He talked to us separately and preached good shit. He's a great artist and a great individual.

This is my second concert, but my first hip-hop concert. I was blown away and I feel like it didn't even happen.

Logic has so much energy and he relates to his fans . I will never forget this experience. He looked up at me and asked my name and age. Then shouted me out to the whole audience and everyone started to scream .

This is one of the best concerts I have been to and I will definitely go again as VIP . Also Ansel Elgort was there . I saw him, but I didn't know it was him , he was just in the audience .

Logic is the best and I hope he never stops doing what he is doing .

I went to see Logic quite a while back in January and the Rave in Milwaukee WI, and it was one of the best experiences in my life. The down to earth sensation you get from Logic as a whole is so rare to find among the hip hop community and I was honored to even be in the same room as him. Not only was Logic amazing, but Micheal Christmas opened for him and now he is defiantly one of my favorite people. If you ever get the opportunity to go see Logic I definitely recommend it, and can't wait until he tours again.

Logic I dont even know if words can describe how good he was , but I will try . His performance hands down was amazing , outstanding such a great performer. He went down the stage just to shake a little kids hand, he was so humble and nice to him it melted my heart & everyone else who was at power house. Logic is not just a great performer but also a good person from heart ! Always gonna be a logic fan ! So worth going to see and being front row would be so worth it.

absolutely amazing. the environment was so positive. everyone in there was going crazy even some people on the balcony were going crazy. And Logics performance was like nothing I've ever seen before;absolutely amazing. And the best thing about it was that he was interacting with his fans in the crowd also. he made it feel like we were all really family like he said. loved all of it. Also his dj's set was so much fun. if you weren't there you should've been there.

Maryland rapper Logic drops new album 'College Park'

Logic pays homage to his home state Maryland on his debut independent album "College Park."

The Grammy-nominated Gaithersburg rapper released the project Thursday — one day after performing his song "Lightsabers" on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

As the album hit music streaming platforms, Logic shared a brief message via Instagram. "College Park out now!! Love my fans," he wrote.

"College Park" finds Logic, born Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, reminiscing about his journey to stardom in Prince George's County. Throughout the 17 tracks on the album, Logic takes listeners back to 2011 when he was still finding his way as a local hip-hop artist in College Park.

The album boasts features from Joey Bada$$, Norah Jones, Bun B, RZA, and Seth MacFarlane, among others. It's his first solo studio project as an independent artist, after parting ways with Def Jam Recordings – the label he signed to in 2013. Instead, "College Park" was released under Logic's Three Oh One Productions imprint.

It's his eighth album overall, and his latest since last year's "Vinyl Days."

Who Is Logic? The Maryland Rapper Talks About His Drug Addicted Parents, His Debut Album, and How Nas Tried to Sign Him

Meet Logic the rapper from Gaithersburg, Maryland whose life story is nothing like you'd expect.

Meet the rapper from Gaithersburg, Maryland whose life story is nothing like you'd expect.

Written by Insanul Ahmed ( @Incilin )

Last week, I sexted Logic . I obviously didn’t mean to send a dirty message to the 24-year-old rapper; I was texting him to clarify a quote from my recent interview with him but got my conversations mixed up. Sitting at my desk at work, reading his understandable responses of “Lol” and “What the fuck,” I immediately apologized as my face flush with embarrassment. Logic, for his part, took it in stride, telling me, “It happens.” His next text took me by surprise: "Just gonna be really funny to remind you of this every time we talk for like ten years.”

Logic says a lot of things that are hard to believe—the least of which is his supreme confidence that he’ll last 10 years in an industry where most artists can barely last two. To most people, Logic looks like a white kid with blue eyes from the suburbs. And they’re partially right—Logic hails from Gaithersburg, Maryland, a suburb in Montgomery County (the same county Wale once called home) that’s a 40-minute drive from Washington, D.C. His government name is Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, which sounds better suited for a Game of Thrones character.

{ "id": 135030239 } I grew up on Section 8 housing, food stamps, welfare, and dealing with social services. I never had a Christmas, I never had a birthday.

“People look at me like, ‘He’s from the suburbs and he was raised rich, and mommy and daddy pay for everything,’ says Logic, who has a white mother and a black father. “Man, get the fuck out of here. Growing up there were guns in the house, my brothers were out selling crack. I grew up on Section 8 housing, food stamps, welfare, and dealing with social services. I never had a Christmas, I never had a birthday.”

But Logic is celebrating now. In the past few years, he’s cultivated a small but significantly engaged fanbase. He’s amassed millions of hits on the YouTube page for the independent label that signed him, Visionary Music Group. The most popular video is “All I Do,” from his Young Sinatra mixtape. It has over seven million views. He's got big name fans, too; No I.D. helped sign him to Def Jam ; on "Welcome To Forever" Logic raps about how Nas quoted his lines to him when they met; and Lupe Fiasco recently claimed he thinks Logic is lyrically better than Kendrick Lamar . He's even got a name for his female fans: BobbySoxers—just like Frank Sinatra.

His 231,000 Twitter followers and 410,000 Facebook fans don’t sound like much compared to established stars who routinely count fans in the millions, but Logic's devotees are committed. Although he's still struggling to command the respect of rap fans who won't look past his pale skin, for the moment, it doesn't matter. He's got plenty of fans buying tickets to his While You Wait tour , which kicked off this week and runs throughout the month.

“Robin Thicke sold six million copies of ‘Blurred Lines,’" he says, before making sure to clarify that he loves Robin Thicke. “But he couldn’t even go gold for his album. He was at a venue in Los Angeles and couldn’t even sell it out—it was only a 2,000 count. I can do that with my eyes shut.”

Anything would seem easy compared to the life of hardship he's already faced. At least part of the reason Logic’s stories sound fictitious is because they’re so outlandish. His half-brothers weren’t just crack dealers, they sold crack to their own father. One of his best friends—who grew up with a loving mother and father—is in prison serving a 14-year sentence for attempted murder after cutting another man’s stomach open and leaving his guts hanging on the sidewalk. Logic claims he was taught how to cook crack on two different occasions, once by his brother-in-law. But none of his stories compare to the ones he tells about his mother, who might be the most troubled rap mom since Debbie Mathers.

“My mother was a good woman,” says Logic, who hasn’t spoken to her in five years. “But she went through a hell of a lot of shit from drugs, prostitution—all types of shit, it fucked her mind up. My mother got stabbed, she was raped, she tried to choke me to death as a child. I can’t even begin to explain the tormenting feeling of living in my household; constant screaming, death-curdling screams, arguments between my mom and other men, her getting her fucking ass whooped. At times, there was blood all over the kitchen and fucking floor.”

Further complicating their tumultuous relationship, Logic says, is that he's the only one of his parents' kids who looks white.

“My mother was racist,” says Logic. “It’s so hard to wrap your head around that and the fact that my own mother would call me a nigger as a child. I’m not talking about ‘What’s up, my nigga,’ I’m talking in a fully prejudiced way. Here’s a woman who wants to sleep with a black man and makes babies and wants to be racist towards them. It’s extremely hard to grasp.”

{ "id": 135030240 } My mother got stabbed, she was raped, she tried to choke me to death as a child. I can’t even begin to explain the tormenting feeling of living in my household. At times, there was blood all over the kitchen and floor.

Unfortunately for Logic, his father didn’t provide any relief. Before crack addiction took over his life, Logic’s father was a musician who played alongside acts like Chuck Brown and EU. Although he remains on speaking terms with him, Logic admits to feeling “like my father’s father.” His dad calls him Logic rather than his given name, Bobby, and keeps nagging him about letting him play on his tour.

“My father has called me and been like, ‘I don’t really appreciate you talking about me smoking crack all the time,’” says Logic. “I’m like, ‘Would you appreciate it if I didn’t say anything and induced those same drugs into my body to try to get over what you put me through? Or would you rather me do it in a positive way?’”

Unsurprisingly, Logic’s unstable household took a toll on his education. After meeting his mother, school administrators, assuming he too was troubled, placed him in classes for students with behavioral problems. When he entered fifth grade, his mother decided to homeschool him. Instead of imparting stepping into the role of teacher, she slept all day and didn’t offer much in the way of instruction beyond black-and-white movies, which led to Logic's fascination with Frank Sinatra. Eventually, social services intervened, and he was forced back into school in time for eighth grade.

“They took an aptitude test to see how much I’d learned,” explains Logic. “I went from fifth grade to eighth grade and passed it. I also took the mental test and they were like, ‘Oh my god, you don’t have any problems. You’re not crazy.'’’ I’m like, ‘I know I don’t have any problems, what the fuck you mean?’ And they were like, ‘Oh, our bad.’”

He didn’t fare much better once he got to Gaithersburg High School. He cut so often he was kicked out. He didn’t get his GED, either. He spent his days working a variety of low-wage jobs at places like Joe’s Crab Shack, Jiffy Lube, and a daycare. After an argument over money with his father, Logic moved out on his own when he was 17 and started renting a room. That’s when his rap career started to come into focus.

Growing up, Logic would always rap to himself, but only began to take it seriously around the age of 15. He studied acts like Wu-Tang Clan, the Roots, Big L, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest, downloading their music from LimeWire and BearShare for the short stints his family could afford high-speed Internet. In eighth grade he met his friend and mentor, Solomon Taylor, who encouraged his interest in hip-hop. When Logic was 16, Solomon gave him 100 How to Be an MC CDs filled with rap instrumentals.

In his early days, he rapped under the name Psychological, releasing the Psychological: The Mixtape in 2009. In 2010, he switched his name to Logic and dropped his first official mixtape: Young, Broke, and Infamous . He’s released a mixtape every year since: Young Sinatra in 2011; Young Sinatra: Undeniable in 2012; and Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever in 2013. The Young Sinatra (2011) tape featured a skit called “Sell Out Records” where Satan (in the form of a record executive) tries to get Logic to sign to their label, Sell Out Records. Ironically, Young Sinatra lead to Logic signing with Def Jam. Prior to signing with the label, Logic says Nas tried to sign him, but he declined for fear of living in the Queensbridge legend’s shadow. And although it was widely reported that Logic signed to Def Jam in 2013, he actually signed to the label in 2011—five months after the release of Young Sinatra .

{ "id": 135030246 } Def Jam hasn’t done s**t! I’m not complaining, Def Jam is incredible, but Visionary did everything for me. From tours, to mixing, mastering, graphics, artwork, I’ve done out of pocket.

“We didn’t want the fans to be like, ‘Oh, he’s going to change!’” says Logic about keeping the deal under wraps. “We wanted to show that we've done it independently and nothing changed. Everything that we’ve done has been Visionary [Music Group]—Def Jam hasn’t done shit! I’m not complaining, Def Jam is incredible, but Visionary did everything for me. From tours, to mixing, mastering, graphics, artwork—I’ve done out of pocket. By the time I did hit Def Jam and say, ‘I need your help, I need the radio, I need this, I need that,’ then they would put their everything into that rather than wasting time and money on shit I could do myself.”

For now, Logic’s eyes are set on his major label debut album, which is slated to drop later this year. The album’s title track, which will serve as the project’s first single, is a nine minute voice-mail-driven song where he details the pressures of being Logic before discussing the pressures of being Bobby Bryson Hall. The song features real voice-mails from his brother and father. Like the rest of the album, Logic says the song is meant to offer detailed insight into his life.

The voice of his family members aren't the only ones you'll hear on the album. There’s a woman’s voice that serves as his muse and runs throughout the album, an homage to A Tribe Called Quest’s classic, Midnight Marauders . However, rather than random facts about the hip-hop community, the voice offers facts about the album, like how it was made in two weeks and mostly recorded at Logic’s home. He describes the album as “extremely, extremely dark” and says it won’t have any rap features because he wants to tell his story. Though he plans on making his second album the exact opposite: a bright, happy album in the vein of OutKast ’s “Hey Ya!” or “Bombs Over Baghdad” that's filled with rap features.

“This is the happiest moment of my life,” he says. “I wake up every day, I deal with hundreds of thousands, or millions of dollars, I fund my tours by myself, I do merch by myself, I employ people, I have my own successful company. I’m 24 years old. I wake up every day and laugh.”

The cast from the 90s hit show “A Different World” was in D.C. on Tuesday as part of a 10-city tour to historically Black colleges across the country. The event, called “Hillman Day at Howard,” not only celebrated the show and its contributions to HBCUs, it also focused on boosting enrollment at the schools.

“This is a perfect moment for us to uphold HBCUs and put a spotlight back on them so that people know how vital they are to our community,” said Cree Summer, who played Freddie Brooks on the show.

“A Different World,” which was on air between 1987 and 1993, was a spinoff of the Cosby Show that followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) to Hillman College — a fictional, historically Black college located in Virginia.

Dawnn Lewis, who played Jaleesa Vinson — Taylor, said the show was able to put a prime time spotlight on the Black college experience.

“The experience of fellowship, of seeing yourself, being seen, appreciated or being encouraged in this kind of environment and nurtured amongst your own,” she said.

Jasmine Guy, who played Whitley Gilbert, said the show offered her a chance to be an artist.

“[Not having] to hold up the whole race because I’m the only Black character on the show, gave me a creative freedom that I hadn’t experienced before,” Guy said.

The show’s diverse cast allowed it to bring a variety of lifestyles in the Black community to TVs across the country.

“We are not a monolithic group of people,” Guy said.

The show also touched on difficult topics, such as racism and date rape. Kadeem Hardison, who played Dwayne Wayne, recalls an episode dealing with date rape, which included a discussion about that topic with Coach Walter Oakes (Sinbad).

“It taught me something. And I got to be vulnerable, because I really was looking for that knowledge. And I got it on the show,” Hardison said.

Glynn Turman, who played Col. Brad Taylor, said the show was also very popular because while tough topics were discussed, there were also laughs.

“I think we can lose sight of the fact that through all of this very heavy commentary that the show did tackle, there were great laughs, the show was fun. It was uplifting,” Turman said.

When asked if there would be a reboot of the show, Darryl M. Bell, who played Ron Johnson, said he used to respond to that question, “never.”

“Now, I say ‘never say never,'” Bells said.

After a press panel, the cast took part in a closed panel discussion with students at the college. Howard University was the second stop for the cast.

Leading into the Howard visit, the cast also accepted an invitation to the White House, which Summer said she enjoyed.

“I’m still flying to tell you the truth. When I come down from this levitation, I’ll let you know,” Summer joked.

The next stop for the cast will be this fall in Montgomery, Alabama, for an event hosted by Alabama State University and Tuskegee University.

Hoyer Tours Southern Maryland Airports to Highlight How the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is Upgrading Transportation Infrastructure and Improving Safety in MD-05

SOUTHERN MARYLAND  — This week, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) received a briefing and tour at two airports in Southern Maryland – Maryland Airport in Charles County and St. Mary’s Regional Airport in St. Mary’s County. As part of the Regional Leadership Council’s Investing in America Week of Action, Congressman Hoyer met with airport officials and leaders from St. Mary’s County to discuss how federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is improving safety and upgrading transportation infrastructure in Southern Maryland.

Maryland Airport, located in Indian Head, received several Airport Infrastructure Grants totaling $586,000 – $294,000 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) FY24 Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) and $292,000 from BIL FY23 AIG. The AIG program was one of three airport improvement programs created by the BIL. The funding can be invested in “airside” improvements such as runways, taxiways, safety and sustainability projects, airport-transit connections, and roadway projects. Congressman Hoyer also toured and received a briefing from St. Mary’s Regional Airport, which has received $587,000 in federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – $292,000 from BIL FY23 AIG and $295,000 from BIL FY22 AIG.  “The historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Investing in America agenda is upgrading our infrastructure in Maryland’s Fifth District and boosting our economic competitiveness,”  said Congressman Hoyer.  “Strategic investment in our infrastructure drives economic growth and creates new good-paying jobs in the process. I’m glad to see Maryland Airport and St. Mary’s Regional Airport using federal funding I secured to develop strategic plans, modernize their facilities, enhance safety and efficiency, and continue to deliver reliable air transportation.” “We were delighted to have Congressman Hoyer visit the Airport today. It was a very fruitful meeting during which we discussed our current and future development plans for the airport. We eagerly anticipate cultivating Maryland Airport into a beacon of pride and prominence for the entire region. Through our strategic partnership with the FAA, we are poised to enhance our role as an economic engine, committed to driving growth, prosperity, and opportunities. Due to its proximity to the Indian Head Naval Support Facility, National Harbor Development, and the Nation's Capital, Maryland Airport will serve as a vital contributor to the economic vitality of both the county and the broader region,”  said Dilip Patel, owner, Maryland Airport, PSM Aviation, LLC.     “We were thrilled to welcome Congressman Hoyer for a visit to AeroPark, our county’s Innovation District, where industry focus on aviation and autonomous vehicles creates an environment to drive innovation, accelerate product development, facilitate business-to-business connections, and assist with commercialization of new technology. Plans for future development will leverage nearby shopping and community centers, creating a vibrant area for residents to live, work, and play,”  said James Randy Guy, President, Commissioners of St. Mary's County.   As of November 2023, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has provided at least $388.6 million in airport infrastructure funding that benefits the residents of Maryland's Fifth District. As a result of this funding, communities have been able to invest in essential upgrades to their airports, and these investments are already improving travel for district residents.

Biden tours collapsed baltimore bridge as clearing proceeds and declares ‘your nation has your back’.

President Joe Biden got a firsthand look Friday at efforts to clear away the “mangled mess” of remains of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, as cranes, ships and diving crews work to reopen one of the nation’s main shipping lanes.

Aboard Marine One, circling the warped metal remains and the mass of construction and salvage equipment trying to clear the wreckage of last week’s collapse, which killed six workers, Biden got an up close view of the devastation.

On the ground later, he received a briefing from local officials, the U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers on the situation in the water and its impacts on the region. The president also greeted police officers who helped block traffic to the bridge in the moments before it was hit by a ship — which helped avert an even larger loss of life.

“I’m here to say your nation has your back and I mean it,” Biden said from the shoreline overlooking the collapsed bridge in Dundalk, just outside Baltimore. “Your nation has your back.”

Biden tours collapsed Baltimore bridge as clearing proceeds and declares ‘your nation has your back’

DUNDALK, Md. (AP) — President Joe Biden got a firsthand look Friday at efforts to clear away the “mangled mess” of remains of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore , as cranes, ships and diving crews work to reopen one of the nation’s main shipping lanes.

Eight workers — immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador — were filling potholes on the bridge when it was hit by a huge cargo ship and collapsed in the middle of the night of March 26. Two men were rescued and the bodies of two others were recovered in subsequent days.

Authorities announced Friday evening that salvage divers had recovered, in the hours before Biden arrived, a third body from the water, that of Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, 38, one of the missing workers. They said the search for the other victims will continue.

The president also met for more than an hour with the families of those killed.

“The damage is devastating and our hearts are still breaking,” Biden said.

Officials have established a temporary, alternate channel for vessels involved in clearing debris. The Army Corps of Engineers hopes to open a limited-access channel for barge container ships and some vessels moving cars and farm equipment by the end of this month, and to restore normal capacity to Baltimore’s port by May 31, the White House says.

That’s important since longer delays in reopening shipping lanes could send shockwaves through the economy . As much as $200 million in cargo normally moves through Baltimore’s port per day, and it is the leading hub for importing and exporting vehicles.

More than 50 salvage divers and 12 cranes are on site to help cut out sections of the bridge and remove them from the key waterway. Officials told Biden they had all the resources they need to meet the targets for opening the channel into the Baltimore port.

The president announced that some of the largest employers affected by the collapse, including Amazon, Home Depot and Domino Sugar, have committed to keeping their employees on payroll until the port is reopened. That followed days of outreach by state and federal officials to try to mitigate the economic impact.

“From the air I saw the bridge that has been ripped apart,” Biden said, “but here on the ground I see a community that’s pulled together.”

It is still unclear, though, how the costs of cleanup and building a new bridge will be covered.

The Federal Highway Administration has provided $60 million in “quick release” emergency relief funds to get started. Exactly how much the collapse will ultimately cost is unclear, though some experts estimate recovery will take at least $400 million and 18 months .

Biden said within hours of the collapse that “the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort.”

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell likened the bridge collapse to assistance that flows after natural disasters and saying ”the federal government will step up and do the lion’s share” of funding. But authorization could cause some squabbles in Congress.

The White House is asking lawmakers to authorize the federal government to cover 100% of the collapsed bridge cleanup and reconstruction costs, rather than seeking funding through a separate, emergency supplemental funding request.

In a letter to congressional leaders, Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young noted similar techniques were used for recovery and rebuilding efforts that received bipartisan congressional support in 2007, when a highway bridge in downtown Minneapolis collapsed during evening rush hour, killing 13 people.

But some hard-line congressional Republicans are already lining up to demand politically controversial offsets for the funding. The conservative House Freedom Caucus issued a statement saying, “If it proves necessary to appropriate taxpayer money to get one of America’s busiest ports back online, Congress should ensure it is fully offset and that burdensome regulations” are waved. It was referring to potential federal spending cuts elsewhere and to regulations like the Endangered Species Act.

The caucus’s letter also suggested that approval for bridge recovery funds be tied to the Biden administration agreeing to lift a pause it has imposed on exportation of liquified natural gas.

The funding questions only serve to heighten the collapse’s political implications as Biden squares off with former President Donald Trump in November’s election.

It’s the second major disaster along the country’s busy northeastern hub in as many years. Last summer, an overpass along Interstate 95 in Philadelphia caught fire and collapsed after a tanker truck slammed into it. Federal and state officials moved quickly on temporary repairs and ultimately reopened that section of the highway faster than expected.

But the cleanup and repairs in Baltimore will take far longer and be far more costly, making the chances it is a net political positive for Biden — especially in time for Election Day — far murkier. That hasn’t stopped the Biden administration from championing anew a $1 trillion-plus public works package that cleared Congress in 2021.

The bridge collapse also has thrust into the national spotlight Maryland’s Democratic Gov. Wes Moore , 45, a leading voice in Biden’s reelection campaign’s effort to energize young voters on the 81-year-old president’s behalf. The governor accompanied Biden on the helicopter tour and during his briefings.

Biden has traveled the country showcasing construction projects on highways, bridges and tunnels. In 2022, he arrived for an event in Pittsburgh just hours after a bridge nearby collapsed . Promoting the public works package also has allowed the president to lean into his love of train travel and many years commuting to and from Washington on Amtrak as a Delaware senator.

Biden said Friday that he’d been over the bridge “about a thousand times” commuting from Washington to his home in Delaware, prompting the state Department of Transportation chief to quip, “thank you for the tolls, sir.”
