Princess cruise dining FAQ
Is food on Princess Cruises included?
Sit-down meals in the main dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, are always included on a Princess cruise, and the menu varies somewhat daily. Also included is a buffet, either called World Fresh Marketplace or Horizon Court, depending on the ship, as well as fast casual and grab-and-go spots on board that serve pizza, tacos, burgers, pastries and ice cream.
Specialty restaurants including Crown Grill, Princess's steak and seafood house, and Sabatini's, the signature Italian restaurant, require a surcharge that's priced at a flat rate per adult or child; some menu items also require an additional surcharge no matter the age of the guest.

Are drinks included on Princess cruise ships?
Select beverages are always included: iced tea, hot tea, brewed coffee, hot chocolate, milk, fruit juice, lemonade and tap water. Everything else, including soft drinks, wine, beer, cocktails, spirits and specialty coffees, must either be purchased a la carte or through one of the cruise line's beverage packages .
Do I need reservations?
Reservations are encouraged for the main dining room and the specialty restaurants, and it's best to make them as early as possible ; walk-in parties will be accommodated on a space-available basis. Guests can make reservations via the Princess MedallionClass app or at guest services once you're on board. If you wish to eat at the same time every night, you can do so by reserving your tables in advance.
Platinum and Elite Captain's Circle members have early access to reservations. Passengers booked in a Full Suite or Reserve Collection Mini-Suite don't need to make dining reservations as they will always be accommodated; they also have access to a dedicated space in the main dining room with expedited seating and an expanded menu.
Does Princess Cruises have an evening dress code?
"Smart casual" attire will be appropriate for the main dining room, buffet and fast-casual restaurants. You might want to pack something dressier for the specialty restaurants or one of the more upscale dining experiences like Chef's Table, 360 or a winemaker dinner.
On sailings that are five nights or longer, there will be one or more formal nights, which do require adhering to a dress code in the dining venues . Cocktail dresses, evening gowns or dressy pantsuits are appropriate for women, while dark suits, tuxedos or dinner jackets and slacks are required for men , along with dressy footwear. If you don't want to dress up or forgot appropriate attire, you're welcome to dine at the buffet or any of the other casual dining options on board during formal night.
Is there assigned seating in the main dining room?
There is no assigned seating at any dining venues on board Princess ships. However, if you are a solo diner or part of a couple or small group, your host might ask if you would like to sit with another party of a similar size in the main dining room; the choice is up to you.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
You can use the Cruise Personalizer to indicate your dietary preferences, including requests for low-sodium, low-fat, low-sugar and vegetarian diets. Kosher meals and baby food are available with advanced written requests. If you have allergies or medical needs related to food, you must inform Princess in writing — check the line's website for more details. Princess Cruises also recently introduced a series of vegan menus for dinner in the main dining room, including starters, soups, salads, pastas and main dishes.
Where can I get snacks on board?
You'll find lots of spots to grab a quick bite, dessert or coffee, including Coffee & Cones, Patisserie, Swirls Ice Cream Bar, The Pastry Shop, International Cafe and Gelateria — options vary depending on the ship. Food at these venues is included, but there is a charge for specialty coffees and teas unless you have a beverage package.
Is room service included on Princess Cruises?
Guests can use the designated button on their cabin's phone to order room service 24 hours a day; each order incurs a $5 delivery fee, which is waived for those with Princess Plus or Princess Premier status.
You can also use the OceanNow feature in the Princess Medallion Class app to order food to be delivered to your cabin or anywhere else on the ship, like the pool deck. This feature is included with Princess Plus and Princess Premium; otherwise, there is a one-time access fee of $14.99 per person per voyage and a $5 delivery fee per order. Food and beverage surcharges may apply for some items ordered via room service.

Majestic Princess Dining – A Helpful Food Guide
We recently took a cruise on the Majestic Princess, a 7-day adventure to the Mexican Riviera. While I always had good service, great food, and many choices on Princess Cruises pre-pandemic, I wanted to see if things changed after the shutdown.
It was our first post-pandemic cruise and first international travel experience with new restrictions. The Majestic Princess has many options for dining, and her dining areas never seem crowded.
While I cruise with food allergies, my review of cruise food may differ from other opinions because cruise lines only provide limited choices of food. Even though I wanted to try out all the specialty restaurants, sometimes I can’t because the kitchen lacks the necessary ingredients to prepare a meal.
So, this is my food review as a Celiac to expand on our full ship review.
Majestic Princess Dining Choices
Unlike most cruise ships with one large main dining room, the Majestic has three. We were assigned the Concerto Dining Room, mid-ship on deck 6.
At the aft, the Allegro Dining Room also has complimentary food. These dining rooms were open from 5 pm to 9:30 pm for dinner.
The Symphony Dining Room on deck 5 was closed to passengers during our cruise and was used by the staff. Of the three, the Concerto Dining Room also offered breakfast from 7 am to 9:30 am and lunch between 12 pm and 1:30 pm.
Other complimentary options included the Burger and Lobster Grill, Swirls Ice Cream, and Noodle Bar on deck 16 or Lido. Also, on the Lido deck, the Worlds Fresh Marketplace provides a large buffet area for those who prefer not to eat in the dining room.
At the Burger and Lobster Grill, passengers have the option to purchase New England Lobster Rolls for USD 15.
On deck 6, Alfredo’s Pizzeria allows passengers to enjoy complimentary pizza. However, it’s easy to mistake it for an a la carte venue with its prime location. Vines on deck 5 have complimentary appetizers with the purchase of a drink or cocktail.
Open 24 hours, the International Café offers specialty coffees, teas, and snacks for a nominal fee. They also had breakfast sandwiches and wraps.
Never Judge The Food By The First Night
Since I have life-threatening food allergies, I don’t have the luxury of doing anytime dining. Instead, I find it safer to eat at the same time, the same place, and with a consistent waiter. Before my cruise, I notified Princess of my allergies so they could add them to my booking.
On the first night, I always make an effort to connect with the Maitre D, who takes my food orders for the following day. I never saw the Maitre D or restaurant manager on embarkation day.
In fact, my waiter confused my food allergies with the lady beside me. It worried me that he kept repeating the wrong food allergies back to me.
In the end, while the meal wasn’t fantastic, it didn’t contain my allergens. Since I know turnaround day often comes with chaos, I never judge the food or the service the first night.
On my second evening, I met Dorde, the assistant restaurant manager. He became my food lifeline to eating safely onboard. Each evening, he’d provide the menus for both lunch and dinner.
Then, I would place my orders for appetizers and an entrée. The pastry chef would provide a dessert surprise, which they called the “pastry chef’s choice.”
Majestic’s Concerto Dining Room Food
Although the complimentary food menu was limited, the food got better as the days progressed. I was surprised the menu had no symbols for gluten-free, lactose-free, or sugar-free items. The cruise line marked only vegetarian choices.
The menu contained a lot of seafood choices which made me a happy camper. My favorite meal was the herb-crusted leg of lamb, served with lamb jus and mint sauce. I ordered lamb twice, and both times, the lamb was cooked to perfection.
Some of the stand-out dishes included a seafood entrée of shrimp and scallops, a seafood appetizer with a fantastic aioli, and the surf and turf. Brian’s favorites were escargot, prime rib, surf and turf, and onion soup.
On our second formal night, the dining room served lobster, a popular choice for cruise passengers. While my husband, Brian enjoyed his lobster entrée, mine was disappointing. My steamed lobster arrived dry with a baked potato.
Since the Majestic Princess carried no lactose-free spread, meals with a butter-based or cream sauce arrived dry, without flavor. I sent back the baked potato and requested some steamed vegetables instead.
On our last night, we enjoyed one of the best meals onboard; surf and turf. While some surf and turf entrees come with lobster, shrimp accompanied our filet mignon.
The galley cooked our meals perfectly, and mine even had gravy. For dessert, guests could choose Baked Alaska, a cruise favorite.
The Desserts
I felt Princess Cruises excelled in their presentation when it came to desserts. They are known for their Chocolate Journeys, so it was no surprise many of the desserts had chocolate embellishments.
Brian had a lime slice at the Crown Grill, which was exquisitely displayed on the plate. Another stand-out was his chocolate mousse. Since I needed desserts that were gluten-free, lactose-free, and nut-free, mine lacked the presentation.
Majestic Princess Specialty Restaurants
We wanted to try out the specialty restaurants during our cruise, which charge a cover fee of USD 29. However, due to my milk, gluten, and nuts allergies, Dorde recommended that I only try the Crown Grill, a steak and seafood restaurant.
The day before our reservation, I didn’t have to pre-order my food from the Crown Grill menu . I was told the kitchen could adapt the dishes to eliminate my allergens.
We didn’t try the Harmony Asian Restaurant. While I had read, they served an unusual Jellyfish appetizer; that item was no longer on the menu.
Instead, it had starters like Crab Rangoon, Peking Duck Salad, and Shrimp Spring Roll. Entrees consisted of Braised Pork Belly Ribs, Lemon Chicken, and Mongolian Beef.
The French restaurant Bistro Sur La Mer’s menu consists of pasta with cream sauce. I found the layout of this restaurant rather odd.
Instead of being in an enclosed, intimate space like the Harmony, the Bistro covered an open area on deck 7 near the panoramic lifts. When guests were dining at dinner, others walked through as it was the main thoroughfare.
While Bitsro Sur La Mer couldn’t accommodate my allergies on this ship, I eventually tried it on the Discovery Princess. You can read about the dining options on the Discovery.
Before our cruise, I had heard the Majestic Princess pizzeria made the best pizza, so I wanted to try it. While they had a gluten-free crust, they didn’t have lactose-free or vegan cheese. Well, you can’t eat a pizza without cheese.
So, I spoke to Dorde, who ordered a package of goat cheese to be sent to the Concerto Dining Room one night. If it was lactose-free, I could take it to the pizzeria and request they make a pizza with it.
Unfortunately, the goat cheese was mixed with cow’s milk making it unsafe to eat. I appreciate that Dorde went above and beyond to find a way for me to eat outside the main dining room. Princess should give this man a raise!
Tip: If you’re a big fan of specialty restaurants, sometimes the cruise lines offer discounts on the first night.
Dining In The The Crown Grill
We tried booking the Crown Grill using the Ocean Medallion, but it didn’t work. So, we called guest services early in the morning and requested dinner seating at 6:30 pm on our Mazatlan port day.
Unfortunately, Brian got sick from something he ate in Mazatlan. We assumed it was the ice in his drink since I had none. By the time we arrived at the Crown grill, he didn’t have much of an appetite.
So, he passed on his usual selection of rib-eye steak in favor of the Maine Lobster tail with peppery butter. I chose the New Zealand double lamb chops with rosemary essence.
Brian requested a garden salad as an appetizer, and I had the Jumbo Sea Scallops with Salmon Caviar.
For me, the appetizer was the best part of the meal. While Brian thought his lobster main was adequate, my entrée came with three stalks of asparagus and a bowl of fries.
Fries at a specialty restaurant, really? My waitress told me that since I couldn’t have gluten or lactose, that was the only item they could make.
However, the waitress offered a salt menu to accompany my fries. The choices were Himalayan Mountain Pink Salt, Smoked Applewood Salt, and Hawaiian Black Salt. I chose the Black Salt, which was really good!
Even though Brian wasn’t hungry, I asked him to order the Key Lime Pie Bar. We were blown away by the presentation, and he said it had a fantastic flavor. I received a tapioca pudding that was so bad that I couldn’t eat it……….that’s a first for me.
Tip: Don’t leave your specialty dining reservation to the last sea day. On our cruise, the Crown Grill was constantly booked.
The World Fresh Marketplace
The Majestic Princess has one of the largest buffet areas I’d ever seen. The World Fresh Marketplace has two sections with a Bakery in the middle. Only one side was open during our cruise, which sailed at 68% capacity.
With both the bakery and one side closed, the buffet became congested with guests not always following the one-way system. We ate some breakfasts and some lunches in the buffet, but I found the selection limited and the dishes unappealing.
I could eat fresh fruit, eggs, and bacon for breakfast. The first morning, I tried the omelet station and requested fresh eggs (because carton eggs have other ingredients). My omelet arrived uncooked in the middle, so I stuck to boiled eggs after that.
Lunch was not much better. So, I stuck with the salad and baked chicken or fresh fruit. While we had read many negative reviews about the World Fresh Marketplace, we agreed it has lots of room for improvement.
Room Service
Since we had a couple of early port days (at 7 am), we decided to try room service. While I have taken more than a dozen cruises, I had never ordered room service once. We also had a Princess mini-suite with an extended balcony, so it was the ideal area to enjoy breakfast.
Breakfast had a limited menu with no bacon and eggs. Instead, there was cereal, fruit, a breakfast muffin, pastries, croissants, yogurt, juices, tea, and coffee. Our breakfast always arrived on time, and one morning, it came 15 minutes early.
I was happy to have just fruit, and Brian had yogurt and cereal. We ordered both orange juice and tea. On the day we arrived in Cabo San Lucas, we opened our curtains to see the famous Arch outside our stateroom.
With a bottle of Prosecco in our stateroom, we decided to have an impromptu Mimosa breakfast on the balcony in our bathrobes. It was a great way to add a little romance to our cruise.
Pre-Covid, Princess Cruises offered an Ultimate Balcony Dining experience, but this service was no longer available. No problem! We created our own memorable Champagne breakfast with a million-dollar view to boot.
Tip: Since I had an empty mini-fridge in my stateroom, I could stock it with fresh fruit from the buffet. I could also get boiled eggs which I could eat for breakfast. While I could heat them, I was happy to have some protein.
Princess Cruises Afternoon Tea
The Majestic Princess offers complimentary afternoon tea in the Concerto Dining Room. Since I’m half British, I couldn’t resist the urge to go.
Being Celiac and lactose-intolerant, I didn’t expect I could eat anything. However, I wanted to enjoy a good cup of tea and watch Brian enjoy the tasty treats.
I was surprised there was no selection in tea, just Orange Pekoe. Having been to many high teas in England, there’s usually a tea menu. Even the Lake Agnes teahouse that you have to hike to in the Canadian Rockies has over 100 selections of tea.
However, when they came around with the sandwiches and pastries, I was astonished they had fresh scones with strawberry jam and English clotted cream. While I couldn’t eat one, I ensured Brian had one for me! All the pastries and sweet treats looked terrific, and Brian said they were fresh and tasty.
As the tea progressed, my waiter presented a plate of gluten-free sandwiches with grilled vegetables. While the bread was dry, I appreciated the extra effort to serve me something.
Ordering Food With The Medallion
Since we were sailing a MedallionClass cruise, we had to order food through the app to test the speed of the service. The option to order food and drinks meant we could keep our prime seating spot in the Hollywood Conservatory.
Unless you’re purchasing alcoholic beverages (without a drinks package) or requesting food from a specialty restaurant, it costs nothing to order. We wanted to keep the order simple.
So, we ordered a Pepsi, a Sprite, two salads, and a fruit bowl using the Ocean Medallion . Since our ship was sailing at 68%, we hoped the food would come fast. But it took 14 minutes to get our drinks and an astonishing 52 minutes to receive the food. It’s a good thing, we weren’t that hungry.
Final Thoughts
While we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise on the Majestic Princess , we felt the food choices were limited, and maybe this is due to worldwide shortages of ingredients. We wouldn’t rate the food as the best, but it wasn’t the worst.
We understand that times have changed, and we must adjust to the new “norm.” We also understand that post-pandemic cruise ships are understaffed, and lines have made cutbacks to recover losses.
We found some dishes were outstanding and others were ok. Some of Brian’s desserts were extraordinarily presented, and I’d comment that they were too good to eat.
Presentation is half the joy of eating because we eat with our eyes first. We loved the layout of the Majestic Princess, and I was thankful to have Dorde help me with my meal choices.

Loved the article! We are sailing to Alaska in August. We're bringing my twin sister and her family along as well. They've never been to Alaska. I used to live and work in Glacier Bay. My family and I cruised to Alaska on Carnival and Norwegian last year. This is our first time cruising on a Princess ship. Although, in Glacier Bay, I climbed aboard many alongside the park rangers. But nothing as nice as the Majestic. It's nice to know what to expect.
Forever Karen
How wonderful that you got to experience Glacier Bay by living there. Have a wonderful cruise on the Majestic.

Thank you for this! We take our 1st cruise on this ship in May to Alaska. I’m a light sleeper and our room is directly across from the laundry room…should we change?

Karen, Your information was terrific. I will look for Dorde onboard. Thank you for the romantic breakfast on the balcony idea. I have cruised at least 30 times and never had room service. I hope our paths cross on a ship someday.
Susan, the romantic breakfast was an impromptu idea that we plan to do again in Alaska. Sometimes, it's the simple things that can make a vacation memorable.

Food on the Majestic Princess
Food on the Majestic Princess may vary.
But just to give you an idea, here is the dinner menu from the main dining room dinner on my cruise when I was on the Majestic Princess, day by day… well, for the first 3 days!

If you’re interested in ideas of things to do on port days, then also see: my Vancouver to Anchorage cruise on the Majestic Princess
When you go to the dining room for dinner and receive the menu, local cuisine is also marked as “local eats flavors” so look for a special symbol for that too!
Below are screenshots from the Princess app.
Day 1: Vancouver embarkation day menu
Day 2: Sea day, formal night menu
Experienced cruisers say that the food in all dining rooms is the same.
I am not sure if the menu just didn’t get properly uploaded in the app for one of the dining rooms or it was a special evening or what, but when I looked at the menu at 2 of the dining rooms, they were different.
Both screenshots were taken around 5:30pm one right after the other.
In any case, this shows you more food choices you may have at dinner when on a Princess cruise ship.
Day 3: Ketchikan port day menu
The Majestic Princess was in Ketchikan from 6:30am to 3pm on this day.
And… those are all the Majestic Princess menus I have for you! 🤪
I didn’t get any more menus after that.
But if you are curious about the variety, I did get 10 days worth of dinner menus on another Alaska cruise: See more dining room menus on an Alaska cruise
How to see the Majestic Princess dinner menu on your cruise
You’ll be able to see the dinner menu once you are on your cruise.
You can use the Princess app to see the menu for that evening.
👆 Next screen: Go to “explore dining options”
Under “exploring dining options” you will be able to see the different Majestic Princess dining rooms, the menu for each dining room, and the hours of each dining room.
The Princess app is how you will choose your cruise boarding time and look for cruise entertainment.
The Princess app is also how you can make reservations in one of the main dining rooms .
It is not necessary to make reservations for the main dining room, but many people like to do so.
You can make reservations before you get on the cruise ship.
If you’re making dining reservations far in advance, you’ll want to check back once it gets closer to your cruise (and once you are on your cruise) to see that your dining time hasn’t changed.
Sometimes they will change it on you, and you won’t be notified about the change.
Once you are on the cruise ship, you can also use the TV in your room to see the dinner menu.
You can view the dining room dinner menu on your stateroom TV. You will turn on your TV and go to dining > restaurant menus
Once you are on your cruise ship, you can also go down to the dining room and see the menu for that evening posted out in front.
And that’s to give you an idea of what type of food might be on the Majestic Princess!
I was on the Majestic Princess in May 2023. Your experience may vary!

Book a once-in-a-lifetime trip to see glaciers, national parks and wildlife!

While some travelers dream of lounging on a beach in the Caribbean, others might be itching to put on hiking shoes and explore the great outdoors. If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.
Princess Cruises
A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.
Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.
In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.
Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)
Norwegian Cruise Line
Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.
They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.
The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.
Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line
Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."
On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."
If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.
Departure City: Vancouver Cruise Ship: Disney Wonder
Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.
Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.
Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)
National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions
For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.
Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”
Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution
Holland America Line
Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.
One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.
Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.
Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam
Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.
Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.
Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge
Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska
✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.
✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.
✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.
✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.
✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.
✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

Reviving classic Russian cuisine
Oct 19 2018.
Roads & Kingdoms talks to Russian chef Vladimir Mukhin of Moscow’s super-restaurant, White Rabbit.
Still in his mid-30’s, Vladimir Mukhin is already one of Russia’s best known chefs and the leading culinary light of the White Rabbit Group, which has 16 restaurants around the country. The most well-known of these, Moscow’s White Rabbit , was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year. Roads & Kingdoms’ Nathan Thornburgh talked to Mukhin in Moscow about being a fifth-generation chef, reviving classic Russian cuisine, and finding good product in the age of embargoes.
Nathan Thornburgh: Tell me about White Rabbit, what is the food? What are you trying to accomplish there?
Vladimir Mukhin: The White Rabbit is a big restaurant. We’re trying to revive Russian cuisine. I’m a fifth-generation chef, so I’m passionate about the food we create. During the Soviet Union period, we killed Russian food. Classic Russian recipes became too simplified. For example, usually you drink tea, but if you want to be, just to be creative, want to make the tea with milk, you can’t. It would be like stealing milk from the government. People went to jail.
When I was growing up, I remember my grandfather coming to the kitchen and crying because he couldn’t experiment with his food.
Thornburgh: Wow. I remember this famous photo session with Che Guevara which came up with some of his best pictures, maybe two incredible iconic portraits came from an entire roll of film, and the photographer went to him and showed him this roll of film and Che said, What the hell are you doing? You wasted all of these images. You took 30 pictures to get one? That’s the government’s film. It’s a similar mentality. So you’re telling the story of a kind of cuisine that was lost on the Soviet history and now you’re playing with this idea of finding it again. What does your process look like? Do you get as many grandmothers as you can round up and just kind of shake recipes out of them? How were you doing this?
Mukhin: I just try to work with as many local farmers and producers as I can, so we can use as many Russian ingredients as we can.
Thornburgh: So this is a close relationship.
Mukhin: Yes. I traveled throughout Russia—not just the big cities, but also the villages to talk with older people.
Thornburgh: You know I think people don’t understand the vastness of Russia, and how big it’s collection of cultures and languages and cuisines is. What parts of the country influences your food?
Mukhin: I’m inspired by the whole country. It’s a big territory, and sometimes it feels like it’s too big. I try and use different techniques and ingredients from all over the country, which I think makes my menus distinct.
We have an a la carte menu with about 50 dishes of classical Russian food. Everything looks modern because I’m a young chef. But if you close your eyes and try these dishes, you’ll taste 100% classic Russian flavors.
I want to highlight all aspects of Russian cuisine. Before the Olympic Games in Sochi, we opened a restaurant there, not just to make money, but to expose people visiting for the Olympics to Russian food. That’s why we opened The Red Fox restaurant. It’s all about Russian ingredients.
Thornburgh: Sochi, at least when I’ve been there, is like a Miami Beach. It’s like a place to get pizza and sushi, and go to the nightclubs.
Mukhin: You been?
Thornburgh: Yeah.
Mukhin: It’s crazy.
Thornburgh: It’s a little crazy, but it’s interesting to bring in Red Fox and sort of say okay, because people are coming out, let’s bring Russia to Sochi.
Mukhin: It was incredible. We had thousands of visitors at the restaurant.
Thornburgh: So you really looked internally for inspiration. Did working outside of Russia motivate you to focus on Russian cuisine?
Mukhin: Yes. I spent time working in Avignon, France. I worked with Christian Etienne, and he would make a special Russian meal once a year. It was crazy.
Thornburgh: How was the food?
Mukhin: It was shit. I told him that I would cook real Russian food for him, and I did. I cooked borscht, blinis, and other classics. He liked it and said that once a year we should use my recipes, but with his influence. I agreed, and we went on to make amazing food. Eventually, I wanted to come back to my motherland. So I left and I started working on making White Rabbit a reality.
Thornburgh: When people go to White Rabbit, what are they going to find?
Mukhin: Someone once told me that there is a new Russian cuisine and an old Russian cuisine. I think Russian cuisine is going through an evolution. So I hope people will come and see evolution at White Rabbit.
Thornburgh: Great. Always good to end on an invite. Thank you.
Mukhin: Thank you so much.

Region Russia Rivers
Local Time 2024-04-05 11:00
Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .
Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.
According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.
Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.
Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.
In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.
- The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
- Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
- Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
- The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.
Moscow cruise terminal
Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "ÑеÑной вокзал").
The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.
South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
