New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Celebrates 20 Years of Beer, Bikes and Bemusement

tour de fat start

(FORT COLLINS) New Belgium Brewing’s annual Tour de Fat is back for 2019, offering a day packed full of free festivities celebrating beer, bikes, and bemusement. This year’s tour kicks off on August 31 in Fort Collins, CO, heads to Asheville, NC, on Sept. 21, and wraps up in Tempe, AZ on October 5.

Each festival gets underway with a wildly popular costumed group bicycle ride roaming public streets in human-powered, two-wheeled euphoria. Immediately following each bike parade, revelers amass at a transformed outdoor space for an afternoon of unforgettable FREE entertainment from a touring ensemble of comedians, cirque performers, general mayhemists, top-notch live musicians and world-class New Belgium beer.

“Our love for bikes runs deep at New Belgium – we like to say our brewery was born on a bicycle seat – so every year we spread that love around the country by coming into towns and hosting the best way to spend a Saturday,” said Tour de Fat Brand Manager, John Yeast. “Big thanks in advance to everyone who will celebrate with us as we attempt to eclipse the $6 million mark of funds raised and donated to nonprofit organizations.”

This year marks the 20th season for Tour de Fat, which has raised nearly $6 million for local non-profits since it all began. The daylong festivities are free, but proceeds from beer and merchandise sales, along with parade donations, go to local non-profits. New in 2019 is a pedal-powered parade participant contest parade contest where winners will be selected based on the creativity, flair and uniqueness of their pedal-powered parade “vehicle” and rewarded with a prize pack that includes up to $500 worth of fixings to throw one heck of a party.

“A typical Tour de Fat parade draws thousands of costumed revelers together who share our mission to amaze and entertain,” Yeast explained. “To further stoke those creative fires, this year we’re offering a super sweet prize package to those people, businesses, civic groups, and the like who wow the crowd by rolling around in unmatched one-of-a-kind style.”

In typical New Belgium style, the brewery tries to leave as little of an environmental imprint as possible. Tour de Fat hosts green vendors, has compost and recycle stations and consciously works diligently to practice sustainable festivization.

“Bicycles basically run on fat and save you money, so they fit perfectly with our commitment to sustainability. Riding improves physical wellness and mental health, reduces CO2 emissions and provides a responsible form of transportation after a beer. Or two,” Yeast said.

Tour de Fat will cycle through the following cities in 2019:

Go big or bike home: Inside Tour de Fat's costume culture

On Saturday, Fort Collins resident Eric Potter will roam the streets looking for a heart.

Machinist programmer and avid Tour de Fat -goer, Potter is all set to hit this year's annual bike parade dressed as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, alongside his family. His wife, Michelle, will be both the good witch and bad witch, daughter Alyssa will be Dorothy, his mother will be the scarecrow, and two dogs have been cast as Toto and the cowardly lion.

Potter has lived in Fort Collins for six years and has made the parade a family affair each time.

Throughout the years, they've dressed as people from the 1980s, the cast of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," superheroes and villains, and the Addams Family.

"It's fun to just be out there and be part of it," Potter said, adding that his family starts brainstorming new costume ideas right after Tour de Fat finishes. Sometimes they start buying costume pieces around Christmas.

MAKE A PLAN : Free shuttles planned from Tour de Fat to CSU game

Chris Corman, who owns Fort Collins costume store Life of the Party with his wife Katie, said Tour de Fat is one of the biggest events of the shop's busiest season.

"We get our first kick off of Burning Man," Corman said, adding that there's a small but dedicated group of locals who attend the annual festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. "... Then we transition into Tour de Fat. The real hard-core people literally start showing up in June."

Corman described Tour de Fat's costume style as "very light, colorful."

"But last year, we had a large group that was full-on Mad Max," he said. "I thought that was pretty funny."

"We always see, like, a group of killer bees," he added. "This year, we're seeing a lot of Minions."

WEEKEND FORECAST :   Partly sunny skies for Tour de Fat, CSU game

Though some start planning early, Corman said in his 21/2 years of ownership of the store, it hasn't been uncommon to find people waiting outside Life of the Party the morning of the Tour. He opens at 7 a.m. to deal with the last-minute demand.

But it wasn't always that way.

"In the beginning, it was sort of a blank slate," said Bryan Simpson of New Belgium Brewing Co. "The costume piece wasn't really there."

Fifteen years ago, when New Belgium started Tour de Fat, Simpson was on the front lines, driving an old Airstream trailer around the country.

Things started to change around year three, when they enlisted Cyclecide, a bicycle club based in San Francisco. Alongside gutter punk music, the club offered up bike jousting and jumping.

"Hokey routines," Simpson said, "street-level, gritty stuff."

The vibe caught up with the Tour de Fat team and they started dressing it up more, he added.

That next year, they brought in Yard Dogs Road Show — a band with a steampunk look, Simpson said. "Very theatrical."

"At that point, everyone was very encouraged to wear a costume," he added. "You'll feel weirder if you're not in a costume."

Now, 15 years down the road from its humble beginnings, how would Simpson describe the evolved Tour de Fat?

"It's the greatest spectacle," he said, adding that with a turnout of around 20,000, Fort Collins shows up in full force.

"(There's) tall bikes that have been done up into other-worldly creations, groups of Smurfs, Waldos, Wizard of Oz comes through," he said. "People are super creative here in this town."

Rolling Stones kick off 48th tour with ‘Hackney Diamonds’ cuts and classics in Houston

The Rolling Stones opened their Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds on Sunday to a sold-out crowd of more than 70,000 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Stones played just three new tracks from the album, choosing to focus instead on classic hits including “Start Me Up,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Satisfaction,” according to a press release. The decision to focus on older material was not unsurprising for a group with more than six decades of songs to choose from.

It was the rockers’ first performance of material from their 2023 effort “Hackney Diamonds” since the album’s surprise release at the 600-seat club Racket in New York last October. (Fans and celebrities packed that tiny venue expecting merely a Stones show and instead were treated to a breadth of new songs — and a Lady Gaga cameo.)

As the tour rolls on, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and company plan to make stadium stops in Glendale, Ariz.; Las Vegas; Seattle; East Rutherford, N.J.; Foxboro, Mass.; Orlando; Atlanta; Philadelphia; Cleveland; Denver; Chicago; Vancouver; Inglewood; and Santa Clara.

When the Stones hit SoFi Stadium this summer, they’ll be accompanied by the War and Treaty on July 10 and the Linda Lindas on July 13.

“Hackney Diamonds” is the rockers’ first studio album of original material in nearly two decades, following 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” It’s also the Stones’ first LP since the death of founding drummer Charlie Watts in 2021. It’s the first time the band has been on the road since its 60th anniversary tour in 2022, and the tour will also feature a stop at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on May 2.

“Charlie was one of the funniest guys I’ve ever known,” Richards told Times music critic Mikael Wood in 2021, “and the most unlikely man to be famous. He hated that side of the job and used to savagely take the piss out of it.”

When “Hackney Diamonds” game out, Wood wrote in his album review, “The songs blend the same ingredients the Stones have been using since the beginning — blues, rock, soul, country, gospel — but they’re tighter and punchier than on any of the band’s previous late-era LPs.”

Meanwhile, according to Rolling Stone , back at the Houston concert one fan said, “People say Joe Biden is too old to be president. They need to look at Mick!”

That said, the Rolling Stones’ 48th tour is sponsored by AARP.
