Moonshadow - TQC Cruises

We had a great afternoon on the water with Moonshadow. The captain and his commentary set the tone for a funny trip around the waters of Nelson Bay and his dedication to finding us a number of small pods of dolphins was second to none!

The perfect way to see Broughton Island. The kids loved the slide & boom net ride and we loved the walks, beach, snorkeling and spectacular scenery. Definitely something we will do again and recommend to friends. Everything was excellent!

A great day out on the slip and splash dolphin tour. We had a lot of fun looking for dolphins and swimming in the boom net and slippery dip. The crew were lovely and very friendly! Would highly recommend them to guests vacationing in the Port Stephens area!

Such an amazing experience. The crew really knew their stuff. On top of that, so many pods of whales! I was shocked by how many we were able to see, and the breached! A must-do if you have never been whale watching!

Really enjoyed their Dolphin Watch Cruise as a part of AAT King tour. The company offers whale watching, dinner cruise, etc. (日本語は下の方) At the time I want on this cruise in December of 2015, there was only one 2 Star review by Rob B. Would I have tried this cruise if I read his review? Hmmm. Since it was one of the stops in my AAT King's all day tour, I had no choice but to take part in the tour, so I went with it. Boy was I glad that I did. I fully respect Rob's review. If I went on a dolphin watch cruise and saw no dolphins, I would be unhappy as well. So, if you are considering this cruise, just make a mental note that Moonshadow is not paying the dolphins to show up at a certain spot at a designated time. The company is too cheap to sign such contract with the dolphins. Condition of the ships: It was clean and I was completely satisfied. However, I could see how some may notice the bit outdated style of their furniture and such. I took lots of pictures, so judge it for yourself. They had a newer ship (Moonshadow V) with a tube waterslide in the back, but I did not get to ride on that. I had no choice on which boat I get to ride on. I got on this one, which is not their newest. Service: The lady that sold me the potato chips was nice. The captain of the ship that kept pointing you to the direction of the dolphins was fine. To be honest, I didn't really care abou the service. Service is actually a non-factor in this cruise as the main purpose is to go look at some wild dolphins. Swimming with the dolphins: Moonshadow doesn't market this in their website, but AAT did. I wouldn't consider splashing around inside a huge net in the back of a boat to be swimming with the dolphins that are hundreds of yards away. I guess you are technically in the same water. I don't recommend jumping in the boom net. It was very uncomfortable. Why not 5 stars: So, how much value is in watching wild dolphins? That is the ultimate question. If your mission is to see dolphins up close, going to one of those aquariums with dolphin show is the best. Those trained dolphins are under contract (one way) and will do flips and jump through hoops. Here is another way to look at it. Is it worth your time and money to travel to Africa to see wild lions? You can see one up close and personal in a zoo. There is one difference with dolphins and lions that you need to consider. With a lion, it might be fun to observe them in the wild for hours, seeing how they live their life. With dolphins, you only see them when hop up above the surface. You don't really get to see how they live, unless you scuba dive. Price: $28 per adult. (it was included in my AAT King's all day tour, so I didn't pay Moonshadow directly). Conclusion: I think it is worth it. Not too often do you get to say you seen a wild dolphin, and the cruise is very refreshing, taking in the scenery of Port Stevens.

BEST CRUISE EVER I went there with some friends for a weekend and we wanted to see dolphins so we decided to go with Moonshadow Cruises, and we were far from being disappointed! Not only did we see dolphins from the boat, but we were also directly in the water with them, which was really fun. We could also take the most of the jacuzzi on board and the water slide to jump into the ocean! Everyone was really nice and funny, we really had an amazing time. Plus, the price is quite cheap (with special students discounts) and really worth it! I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Port Stephens.

Photo of Joanna M.

Although our dolphin watch cruise spotted exactly zero dolphins, we were given a voucher for a free trip good six months, and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time on the water and enjoy a beer. The staff were friendly and professional, and all of the boat's facilities were clean and well set up. I can't wait for our next trip!

Photo of Rob B.

We took the Dolphin Watching Cruise. There were no dolphins. They claimed there were 99% odds to see dolphins. But oh well. My kids still had fun running around the boat and looking for dolphins. My main observation is that this business seems fairly run down and they just don't seem to care much. They promised "fun" commentary. But not so much. Maybe one of their competitors has some more pride or passion. Who can say?

Dear Rob, Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience during your recent dolphin watch cruise. We appreciate all feedback as it assists us in continuing to improve and create a positive experience for all of our passengers. I would like to take this opportunity to respond to some of the feedback as provided. Our dolphin watch cruise is focused on dolphin watching as the main priority but also to explore the beautiful scenery and enjoy all the benefits of what Moonshadow has to offer including the slide and boomnet on Moonshadow V. We were glad to hear that your children enjoyed themselves aboard the vessel. We are as disappointed as you in that we did not sight dolphins on the day of your cruise, the dolphins are wild animals and from time to time we are not successful in locating them. We offer all passengers (whom are able to return) a complimentary voucher for a return cruise. An announcement is made through our on board PA system to direct customers to the bar area to collect their return voucher. We were taken back by your comments regarding the "fairly run down" as this particular vessel has recently had newly refurbishments throughout. The crew conducts regular checks throughout the vessel to ensure that it is maintained in a presentable & clean standard. I don't have an answer to this point, except maybe something was untoward between checks and I sincerely apologize if this was your experience. It is exceptionally disappointing to read that you believe that "we don't care much" and was below your expectations as our entire team is chosen for the enthusiastic, friendly and professional approach. I have discussed your comments with our management and the crew and all have expressed their honest concern and disappointment in regard to your opinion of the cruise. We try hard to provide an excellent cruise with value for money but I appreciate and accept your opinion and it is disheartening that we were unable to meet your expectations. Kind Regards, Elyss Larkham
