Mudumalai National Park Timings

Where is mudumalai national park located.

The Mudumalai National Park , one of the first forest ranges to be declared as a National Park, is located in the Nilgiri district on the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The park is located in the Ooty-Mysore route and can be entered from both Ooty and Mysore.

About Mudumalai National Park

Mudumalai National Park is one of the most critical ecological systems in the country, with Bandipur National Park and Nagarhole National Park to the north and the Wayand wildlife sanctuary to the south. In between them they house more than 500 species of animals, birds, reptiles and even more species of insects.

Famous for its tiger population, the National park was recently declared a Tiger Reserve with a population of about 103 tigers. Needless to say the place is breathtaking and captivating for anyone who appreciates nature.

As you ride through the forests you are bound to see elephants roaming freely in the wilderness and different types of deer for starters. As you move deeper into the jungle, if luck favors you, you will see many endangered species of birds and animals.

High on the list of endangered birds are the vultures. Monkeys like the Grey Langurs are common in the forest. You also find varieties of snakes like the Great Indian Rock Python, Spectacled Cobra, Pit Viper and so on.

In addition to animals like tigers, elephants, panthers and deer among others, you find scores of amphibians and many exotic birds, like different types of parrots, eagles, vultures and some others which you have never seen in your life, and will never see anywhere else. It is said that 13 percent of all mammal species in India are present in Mudumalai National Park. The Indian Giant Squirrel, the Flying Lizard, Indian Leopard, which are in the endangered list are found here.

Trees like teak, sandalwood, mahogany and also bamboo grow uninhibited and tall, almost cutting the sunlight even when the sun is high in the sky. So it is advisable to reach the reserve during noon or just after noon and also carry alternate sources of light with you.

The Mudumalai sanctuary connects the Eastern Ghats and the Western Ghats together. The Moyar River runs through the reserve and you are assured to see a large variety of fauna coming there to quench their thirst. The park is one of the very few places in the country where you can see the animals in their true natural habitat, where you actually see the tiger with all its ferocity. A must place for a true nature lover.

The Forest Department maintains many forest houses at various locations inside the Mudumalai National park which are provided on a first come first serve basis and they need to be booked in advance by calling the Ooty office of the National Park.

Things to do in Mudumalai National Park

1. Jungle Safari – The Mudumalai National Park van safari is the most popular activity there. The buses take you to the core area of the national park where you can follow the wildlife trail. Barking deer, python and macaque are common sights, but you can also spot tigers, panthers and leopards in shades or around ponds.

2. Elephant Safari – Near the reception, you can choose an elephant for a ride in the forest. However, unlike the jungle safari by a jeep/bus, elephants don’t go deep in the woods. But watching the greenery around and above, from an elephant’s back is a memorable experience in itself.

3. Elephant camps – Mudumalai National Park also acts as a rejuvenation and recreation point for the elephants. At these camps, you can play with elephants and their calves and also bathe them, feed them or just watch them relax in their natural habitat.

4. Trekking in the Mudumalai forest – Officials of the forest department don’t allow anyone to walk or roam around, inside the core forest area. However, plenty of guided trekking trails and mountain hiking activities are available through the lodgings and travel planners nearby. So, put on your boots and go on exploring the areas around the national park.

5. Bird watching – Apart from the tall, dark forests and abundance of wildlife, Mudumalai also boasts of abundant birdlife. While peacock, jungle fowl and Malabar grey hornbill are common, you can also find different migratory birds. The park is also home to birds of prey like eagles, hawks and vultures.

Best time to visit Mudumalai National Park

Mudumalai National Park safari runs throughout the year. The climate of the area is tropical wet in nature. So the best time to visit Mudumalai National Park would be early summer or just after the monsoons. However, your best shot at spotting native animals is during the beginning of summer season, between February to May. Animals stroll down to lakes and other water sources quite often, and migratory birds too make Mudumalai their home for the time being.

If you prefer cooler temperatures, you can visit the park during September and October. But with the fall in temperature, the chances of animal sightings also decrease.

Avoid Mudumalai during the monsoon season which usually prevails during July and August. The trails are muddy and unsuitable for trekking and other activities.

Time to explore Mudumalai National Park

Mudumalai bus safari takes you for a one-hour ride in the jungle. But during rush hours or weekends, you might need to wait for an hour or so, until a vehicle is available for you. So, if all you plan is to go for the jungle safari in Mudumalai National Park, 2-3 hours would be enough.

You can choose to book a night stay if you want to spend time trekking around those thick forests. Rooms and dormitories are available at your disposal.

How to Reach Mudumalai National Park?

Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the road that connects Mysore and Ooty. It is about 90 km from Mysore and only around 70 km from Ooty. To be there, you can take one of the regular buses from Ooty to Mysore and get down at the reception counter in Theppakadu. If you’re staying in Ooty, you can avail a private cab from top car rental companies in Ooty to take you to this tiger reserve and then drop you back.

Here are ways to reach Ooty.

By road – Ooty is accessible via buses and taxis from nearby towns. Regular buses run to and from Bangalore (300 km), Coimbatore (85 km), Mysore (125 km) and other tourist destinations nearby. A cab will be a better option as it allows you to stop at will and enjoy the scenic views of the slopes, tea plantations and vegetation on the way.

By rail – The nearest railway station is Ooty itself, and the steam-powered toy train connects it to Mettupalayam (40 km). Mettupalayam has regular connectivity to other towns of India and has daily trains from Chennai and Coimbatore.

By air – The nearest airport is at Coimbatore, about 85 km away from Ooty and 160 km from the Mudumalai National Park. Flights from Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities are available regularly. For the international travellers and nature lovers, Bangalore airport (around 300 km away) is the best choice to get access to the wilderness in Mudumalai National Park.

Places to visit near Mudumalai National Park

1. Needle Rock View Point – It is situated in Gudalur, about 15 km from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. All you need is to trek for a few hundred metres to savour amazing views of the national park and the villages nearby. You won’t find many people here, thus giving you a perfect opportunity to capture some candid photographs.

2. Pykara Lake – Pykara Lake is about 34 km from Mudumalai on the way to Ooty. It is formed because of the dam and power plant constructed on the Pykara River, and the place is a popular spot for boat rides and hiking. The cascading Pykara Falls lies a few hundred metres away and is accessible by foot.

3. Wenlock Downs – On the way to Ooty, you will see vast stretches of rolling grasslands. These are known as Wenlock Downs. It is a scenic tourist spot that offers breathtaking views of the Nilgiris and 360-degree views of the neighbourhood. The places near 6th Mile Ooty and 9th Mile Ooty have appeared in many Indian movies and are thus also popular as shooting points.

4. Pine Tree Forests – About 45 km from Mudumalai National Park, lie the dense pine forests, on the way to Ooty. It is another tourist destination in Ooty known for being a preferred venue for Hindi and regional language movie shoots. Horse riding is available there for adventure seekers.

5. Tea Estate View Point – Ooty offers numerous viewpoints to glance at the green slopes covered with tea plantations, but you shouldn’t miss the tea estates near Doddabetta. Here, you can trek down the trails among tea plantations, and also, experience for yourself how tea leaves are processed and produced for consumption. It is near Ooty city, about 60 km away from the national park.

Things to keep in mind while visiting Mudumalai National Park

Now that you have all the information about Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, given below are a few things to take care of during your visit.

1. Jeeps run by private travel operators remain out of bounds of the main forest area. They only take you around the park and not inside.

2. Chances of tiger sighting are more during dawn, so opt for the morning safari if possible.

3. Be there early for safari, at least an hour before the official times, so that you can avoid any rush during rides.

4. Because of thick forests, it gets dark even before sunset. Warm clothes are a must as it gets cold from the evening onwards.

5. An umbrella or raincoat is not a bad idea, because the rainfall is quite erratic in these parts and sometimes occurs just out of the blue.

Ooty is a famous hill station that is frequently visited by tourists from all over the country. To make your Ooty trip a memorable holiday experience, we at Ooty Tourism, a division of Holidays DNA have created Ooty tour packages that are affordable as well as customisable. mudumalai jeep safari tour

The Mudumalai National Park is the first wildlife sanctuary in Southern India in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and the name Mudumalai means ‘the ancient hill range’. Jungle Safari, being the central attraction, is the most opted activity by the tourists in the Mudumalai National Park. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the tiger reserve and you have to avail the safaris arranged by the forest department of Tamil Nadu. Apart from jeep safaris, bus and camper safaris are also available. In order to avail the type of safari of your choice it's better to do your Mudumalai National Park Booking in advance.

Set your foot into the core areas for the best

The forest offers you to witness the grandeur of the vast stretch of wilderness commonly ranging from Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Barking Deer, Sambar Deer, Langurs, Sloth Bear, Indian Gaur, Asian Elephant, and Bengal Tiger And Leopard if you are lucky enough. Along with them your sight will also cover 277 species of birds and many more. That's not all. Treat your eyes with the wide horizon of flora at the national park which includes teak, sandalwood, indian rosewood, honeysuckle, grewia, tamarind, jamun, bamboo, terminalia and various species of grasses.

Some important tips for you :

  • 1. Make a transparent plan for your trip beforehand and complete your bookings for lodging, safari or other activities in advance.
  • 2. Make sure to reach the safari venue at least 30 minutes prior to the timing to avoid any hassle.
  • 3. 1 night and 2 days is enough to explore the flora and fauna of the Mudumalai National Park and enjoy the activities and nearby sightseeing.
  • The Mudumalai forest safari office is located at a 10 km distance at Theppakadu junction and the drive to reach there is close to a safari experience in itself.

Trek through the Mudumalai forest

Apart from the jeep/bus/camper safari there are several other activities involved to give you a thrill-filled experience, such as elephant safari, elephant camps, bathing the baby elephants at the elephant camps, bird watching, forest treks and sightseeings at the nearby spots like Pykara lake, Kallakaty falls, Moyar river, and so on.

Considering the safety of the tourists, the forest department authorities do not encourage people to walk or roam around inside the forest premises. However, you can contact the travel planners who will safely take you through the forest areas for well-guided trekking trails, mountain hikings and other such activities. So pull up socks and set your feet forward to explore the less explored areas of the Mudumalai National Park.

23 Reviews and Tips

Mudumalai is tiger reserve forest in Nilgiris. If you are interested in seeing wild animals,i recommend to visit this place. While visiting Mudumalai we traveled through masinagudi. There are two routes to reach mudumalai. If you choose masinagudi route you should be good in driving.on the way to mudumalai itself we able to see the wild animals like monkey, deer, peacock etc. After reaching mudumalai,we have to go for safari ride through government vehicle inside the forest. Its entirely different watching the animals in Zoo and in forest.During our ride we sighted animals like Bison, wild elephant, nilgiri thar, deer. But we are little bit unlucky,we are not able to see any tiger...

The forest around the Mudumalai park is an excellent one. However, the safari must be improved. Unlike Bandipur, the safari ride was a very short bumpy one. We did not spot any animals around the park. There is also no online booking facility for the safari

I went with my friends to Mudumalai National Park.It was an excellent experience.Open Jeep safari is available. We saw lots of elephants and deer.Feeding the Elephants is an awesome experience.Go earlier before 11 AM to park in order to enjoy the safari ride. If you reach after 1 PM, chances of missing the safari are more.

The journey to Mysore via Mudumalai National Park was a memorable experience. We saw some wild animals including Deer, Elephant and etc., It is better to avail cab so that you can stop the vehicles and take the snaps of the wild animals on the way.

Take your own car to visit Madhumalai forest. Some of them told that the normal car doesn't go and we have to take a jeep but its a regular road that any car can go on. There we saw many animals including Deer, Elephant, Peacock, and Monkeys.

There are two good Wildlife sanctuaries Mudumalai & Bandipur which are located one after the other & therefore it is a benefit for wildlife lovers choosing one of them. Safari ride is available here.We hired Zoom car & drove to these places and hence had the liberty to drive around & spot animals.

Mudumalai is the best place to visit with family and friends. One can spot so many wild animals including elephants, deer, bear and tiger in safari ride.

DEAR SIR, MY NAME IS POOJA MISHRA.I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE THIS AND READ THE ARTICLES.

Mudumalai is a must place to inflict by wildlife enthusiast. The best time to visit in the early morning or night so as to sight animals. There are an elephant ride and forest safari ride which take inside the forest at a nominal rate. The ride is for one and a half and hour with a forest department vehicle. The road to this place is closed from 6 pm to 6 am to Thepakadu from Ooty. There are many cottages near to this tourist spot.

The drive to this National park from any side might be Mysore, Coimbatore or Ooty is too good. They de-nude-ed the landscape.

Another day, another instance of tourists disrespecting a landmark.

This time, foreign sightseers angered Namibian authorities after posing naked atop the legendary Big Daddy Dune in the Namib Desert, as seen in photos circulating on social media .

“It is very sickening and it really [creates] a bad image for Namibia,” Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, told the Namibian Sun, the BBC reported.

He added that these antics risked attracting tourists who think that “anything goes” in the southern African nation.

Accompanying footage and video, snapped by an unknown source, shows the unnamed trio strutting about in their birthday suits atop the over 1,000-foot-tall sand mound, which is reportedly popular with families.

Visitors didn’t appreciate the tourists treating the scenic site like a nude beach and called on tourism officials to take action against the crass culprits.

Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified the sandy stripteasers, who allegedly left Namibia by the time authorities received the reports.

However, the nudists could be banned from entering the country’s parks, according to tourism ministers, who added that the “extremely shocking” act was public indecency and therefore punishable by local law.

In light of the indecent incident, officials are calling on visitors to report violators to authorities so they can deal with them accordingly.

“We appeal to that section of tourists to summon the conscience so that they do the right things,” declared Romeo Muyunda, a spokesperson for the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism.

However, many social media users disagreed that the incident was problematic.

“Why are they in trouble? They bothered no one,” an X user declared, according to the BBC, while another claimed that there is “nothing wrong with sunbathing.”

Big Daddy is one of the three largest dunes in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park and is a popular destination among sightseers looking to get a picturesque view from its crest.

Your Guide to Private Browsing in Safari

Private browsing is often misunderstood, but it can be a helpful feature if you know what’s what.

Quick Links

What private browsing does in safari, how to use safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to use safari private browsing on a mac, how to disable safari private browsing on iphone and ipad, how to disable safari private browsing on a mac, key takeaways.

  • Private Browsing in Safari hides browsing history, autofill details, downloads, and locks tabs after inactivity.
  • Safari on Mac groups private and non-private tabs, while on iPhone it shows all tabs regardless of mode.
  • To use Private Browsing in Safari, identify it by a dark address bar, "Private" indicator, or "Private" next to the site URL.

Most browsers offer a private browsing mode that aims to keep the websites you view off the record. But what exactly does it do in Safari and how do you get the best out of it?

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

  • Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.
  • Stops remembering details you enter in forms for autofill.
  • Keeps downloaded items from appearing in your Downloads list.
  • Locks private tabs after a period of inactivity.
  • Adds tracking and fingerprinting protection.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

  • The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
  • On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
  • On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

  • Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
  • Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
  • If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

  • Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
  • Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
  • Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Screen Time .
  • Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
  • If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
  • Tap Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

  • Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
  • Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
  • Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
  • Click Content Restrictions .
  • Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.
