The Black Pearl A RICH And VARIED HISTORY
In the early 1930s, Atlantic Beach was formed as a vacation getaway for African American families. Nicknamed “The Black Pearl”, it became a popular vacation destination as black-owned businesses thrived in this small community.
Many residents are descendants of the Gullah Geechee people, former slaves from the West Coast of Africa who lived and worked in the coastal areas around Jacksonville, Florida, to Wilmington, N.C. Today, residents of Atlantic Beach are working to preserve their rich heritage and traditions.
Atlantic Beach is where “beach music” as we know it evolved. Atlantic Beach was a popular performance location for black musicians and would host events after hours that all people would draw to, including shows from many famous musicians such as Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, The Spinners, The Drifters and Chubby Checker.
Atlantic Beach is one of the best beaches to get married on the Grand Strand with unobstructed views of the ocean from the dunes.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy a trip to Horry County Bike & Run Park (also known as "The Hulk"), a 7 mile trail that twists and turns across 72 acres of land, nestled between Carolina Forest and Myrtle Beach.
Peaceful and beautiful
Between Myrtle Beach and Conway on Highway 501, the relatively new community of Carolina Forest is located along the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway.
Primarily a residential area, almost half of this masterplanned community has been set aside for conservation and home to coastal black bear and Venus-fly trap preserves, among other wildlife.
Along the corridor that spans U.S. 501, you’ll find some great shopping opportunities including Tanger Outlets and car enthusiasts will love the Wheels of Yesteryear Museum.
Dining here includes a number of great options including places serving everything from sushi and steaks to burritos and burgers.
You can also find several golf courses and recreation centers, along with a beautiful concentration of pine trees and hardwood forests.
ENJOY HISTORIC Conway
Take a step back in time.
Founded in 1732, Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina, with all the charm and grace of a historic southern community. Oak tree-lined streets run through the picturesque historic district, inviting visitors to stay and explore.
The Conway Riverwalk, set along the beautiful Waccamaw River, offers visitors a picturesque tour of the river town.
A visit to the recently renovated Horry County Museum, which includes a beautiful aquarium, is a perfect way to spend a day trip away from the beach while also learning something new.
The charming downtown area is also steeped in historic architecture that has been carefully renovated to house unique shops and a thriving art community. With several new restaurants opening this year, downtown Conway offers a variety of options from wine bars to southern cafes.
The city is home to a number of popular community events, including the annual Riverfest along the Waccamaw and the Conway Ghost Walk.
All over downtown Conway, you can find great "hidden" spots such as the train mural in Kingston Park, the F.G. Burroughs riverboat mural, the garden walk, Coastal Carolina’s “Teal Alley” and the “flood markers” which show how high floodwaters rose after Hurricane Florence in 2018.
A small town with a big heart
Founded more than a century ago, the small town of Aynor is located 35 miles inland, not far from Conway.
Celebrated for its friendliness, the community is referred to as the “Little Golden Town.”
September brings the famed Harvest Hoedown Festival to Aynor, where agricultural living is celebrated with food, games, music and fun for the entire family.
Walk through downtown Aynor to discover several locally owned shops, with plenty of friendly smiles.
When you visit, make sure you take your picture with the railroad mural in downtown Aynor — it’s a stunning nod to the town’s past.
Socastee SWING INTO
Explore this wild, historic area.
Socastee is located just west of the Myrtle Beach International Airport, between Route 17 and the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge.
Historic Socastee is home to one of 10 swing bridges in the state. Built in 1935, the bridge still swings on a regular schedule. The town also boasts a historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for the post-Civil War preservation.
For a unique journey on the Intracoastal Waterway, hop on a jet ski with Island Adventure Watersports for a back country tour. You can also play a round of disc golf at Socastee Recreation Park or enjoy of few rounds of fun, friendly paintball or airsoft combat nearby.
Next to the historic swing bridge, along the Intracoastal Waterway you’ll find one of the area’s best burger spots, River City Cafe. If you’re feeling brave try the "Kitchen Sink" or the "OMG " burger platters.
Be sure to visit the area around Surfside Beach Pier, which has dining options ranging from pizza and burgers to seafood and steaks, as well as several hangouts and shopping spots. Though the pier is currently being rebuilt, there’s plenty to do nearby.
ENJOY FAMILY TIME IN
A town Where quality time comes easy
Incorporated in 1964, Surfside Beach has long been known throughout the Grand Strand as a “family beach.”
For a game of tennis, bocce, shuffleboard and much more, you don’t have to look further than the town’s seven public parks. Surfside’s pristine beaches are cleaned daily and supervised by lifeguards and police, giving families peace of mind while their children play on the beach.
There are several beach access points that offer showers, restrooms and accessible ramps for persons with disabilities.
In 2016, the Surfside Beach town council signed a proclamation to make Surfside Beach the first autism-friendly travel destination in the United States, further establishing their reputation as a beach for all families.
KICK BACK & RELAX IN
Fun for the whole family.
Located directly south of Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach is a small beach community revered for its lighthearted, family-friendly atmosphere and nostalgic beach town charm.
The inlet meets the ocean here, making the water much calmer, so the area is a hot spot for watersports, fishing and crabbing.
The heart of Garden City Beach is The Pier, a paradise for those looking to fish during the day and dance to live music at night.
Nearby arcades and ice cream parlors are favorite stops for those ready to continue the fun after a day in the sun.
Surfing is a favorite pastime for many people who visit and live in Garden City Beach. Shop around at classic surf shops or take lessons from a pro.
Garden City Beach’s Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade has been an annual tradition for over 30 years in the community. Each year, families both local and visiting decorate their golf carts with elaborate red, white, and blue flags, lights, and banners to show off their American spirit.

A historic vacation spot.
Found at the southernmost end of the Grand Strand between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Pawleys Island is one of the most historic resort communities on the east coast.
It was once the summer home to wealthy pre-Civil War rice planters, and there are still twelve residences which date from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s.
Pawleys Island is proudly referred to as "arrogantly shabby," as residents revel in its simple charms and natural beauty. Those charms rub off on visitors who enjoy the community’s unique shops, restaurants, and slower pace.
It’s also home to three of America’s top 100 public golf courses. So, enjoy a walk on Pawleys’ delightful stretch of white beach, play a round of golf on a designer course or shop and dine at The Hammock Shops Village.
The area is home to the original rope hammock, created to allow for breathability and comfort during hot summer days. They are still handcrafted by locals in a variety of colors for both indoor and outdoor spaces, and available for purchase at Pawleys Island hammock stores.

IT’S TIME TO TRY
S.c.’s favorite dance.
The Myrtle Beach area is the birthplace of South Carolina’s official state dance — the Shag. Chances are pretty good that when you are in North Myrtle Beach, you’ll hear beach music along the famed Ocean Drive area.
It was on this strip that South Carolina’s official state dance was born in the 1940s. While some steps may remind you of the jitterbug or different swing dances, the Shag is smoother and moves at a slower pace.
It’s worth the trip to Ocean Drive to check out the dancers, many of whom participate twice a year in a shagging migration to this part of the coast. There are even junior shagging events for younger participants, so no one misses out on the classic Carolina fun.
See video of The Shag, learn more about the dance, and find out where the best shag clubs are on The Grand Strand at VisitMyrtleBeach.com

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL SITES
The Myrtle Beach area has been greatly influenced by its African American heritage and roots that date back to the 1700s. From what we eat to the way we speak, so much of who we are can be traced back to the African American history in the region.
Brookgreen Gardens
The over 9,000 acres are located on the site of four former rice plantations in Murrells Inlet. It is home to a Lowcountry History Center and Lowcountry Trail which tell the history of what life was like on a rice plantation. Brookgreen also offers several Gullah Geechee historical programs throughout the year.
L.W. Paul Living History Farm
Before The Beach became a vacation destination, the local economy was driven by agriculture. Take a trip back to that period at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. This 17-acre farm gives visitors an idea of what it was like to live in the region between 1900 and 1955. Visitors can take part in activities such as plowing with mules, making lye soap and milking cows.
Hobcaw Barony
Located between the Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this 16,000-acre property is dedicated to research and education in history and ecology. It includes buildings and sites that reflect the lives of African Americans from the early 19 th century through the first half of the 20th century.
Hopsewee Plantation
Hopsewee Plantation, an historic rice plantation, features hands-on workshops to learn the art of sweetgrass basket weaving taught by a Gullah descendent, an eighthgeneration weaver, named Vera Manigault.
Freewoods Farm
Learn about 19 th-century life from the perspective of African American farmers at Freewoods Farm in Socastee. This is a 40-acre, still evolving “living museum” and the only African American historical living farm museum in the United States.

Artifacts from the school and the period are on display in this newly restored school to tell the story of African American education in Myrtle Beach prior to desegregation. A reference library of African American history is also available to the public.
RELIVE MUSIC HISTORY
At charlie’s place.
Charlie’s Place — home to the former Fitzgerald Hotel — is a site that honors the work of Charlie Fitzgerald and his wife, Sarah. The couple owned a nightclub where famous musicians, such as Little Richard and Billie Holiday, performed their music from the 1930s to 1960s. The Fitzgerald’s home has been refurbished to an event and community center, and several of the motel rooms have been reconstructed to show visitors the history of travel during segregation.

ENJOY The Beach SAFELY
With tens of thousands of people swimming in the ocean and pool daily during the summertime, the Myrtle Beach area has an excellent safety record. But it’s important to take proper precautions when near water. Each beach access in the City of Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach have signs with animals and characters as a symbol to mark your location if lost. When walking to the beach, take a moment to note the beach access location, especially with children. Here are a few water safety tips to make sure your visit to our many beaches or pools is as fun and safe as possible.
Beach Safety Tips
• Look for and obey all beach safety flags. If you are unsure of the meanings of each flag, please reference the signs posted at the nearest beach access.
• Swim in areas with a lifeguard. Listen and follow lifeguard’s directions and warnings.
• Swim with a buddy
• Swim sober
• Don’t fight the current (and signal for help!)
• Don’t float where you can’t swim
• Watch small children closely
• Don’t swim or surf within 75 yards of piers or where people are fishing
• Don’t dive into the surf (protect your neck!)
• Leash your boogie board or surfboard
• Ask a lifeguard about ocean water conditions
• People with open wounds or compromised immune systems should avoid public bodies of water
• Know the local rules and laws (visit the municipality’s website for more info)
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department encourages all visitors and the community to practice beach and pool safety and to be aware of Sunny Swell at each beach access point.
Pool Safety Tips
• Watch Children - It is important to not drink alcohol, look at a phone, or nap while your children are swimming.
• Teach Kids to Swim - It is recommended that your child take swimming lessons prior to going on vacation where pools and the beach are the main attractions, even if they teach basic skills in the water.
• Use Life Jackets - Do not use air filled or foam toys, such as water wings, noodles, or inner tubes as they are not designed to keep children safe from drowning.
• Enter Water Feet First - Jumping or diving into too shallow water can cause injuries that are preventable by knowing the depth of the pool.
• Never Swim Alone - Even for confident swimmers, it is important to use a buddy system to prevent an emergency.
• Learn CPR - Everyone, regardless if you have children, should learn CPR for emergency situations.

SENSORY-FRIENDLY AT The Beach
Surfside Beach became the first Autism-Friendly destination in the United States in 2016 through the Champion Autism Network (CAN). The City of Myrtle Beach then proudly followed in 2018. Since then, the entire Grand Strand has worked to rally together to be more friendly to those with autism or sensory-processing disorders. There are several programs across the community that strive to create a welcoming place for all visitors and locals to the area.
The Beach with everyBODY: Sensory-Friendly
– The Beach is a place where everyone can find where they belong – and we mean every body, every ability, every family, every one. Visit Myrtle Beach is partnering with the Champion Autism Network (CAN) and TravelAbility for The Beach is for everyBODY: Sensory-Friendly Pledge. Businesses across the Grand Strand can pledge to be a welcoming and inclusive space to everyone, practice patience and problem-solving in all situations, and cultivate a space of acceptance and helpfulness.
For a list of participating businesses, please visit our website. www.visitmyrtlebeach.com/pledge
Horry County Police Disability Services
Horry County Police Department and other safety services provide several programs for individuals with sensory or special needs. The majority of officers in the safety services departments have participated in awareness training to learn how to respond to autism/ sensory-friendly needs through the Champion
Champion Autism Network CAN Card
The Champion Autism Network created the CAN Card to provide families with a quiet, dignified way to let participating businesses know they are an Autism family at participating restaurants, attractions, services, and lodging. Visitors can order a CAN card on the Champion Autism Network’s website before traveling to The Beach or pick one up at the Myrtle Beach Welcome Center: 1200 N Oak Street, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

Autism Network and are equipped to provide kits with fidget toys, headphones, and other items if necessary. To contact Horry County first responders or fill out a sensory-friendly needs form, please email specialneeds@ horrycountysc.gov.
The Myrtle Beach International Airport offers a "Quiet Room" for families to relax and decompress after before or after a long flight. The Quiet Room at MYR was the first of it's kind in the U.S. and paved the way for other quiet rooms for travelers around the world.
Sensory-Friendly Travel Tips
1. be ready for the beach.
Let’s start with protecting your child from sun, sand and wind. The beach is beautiful, but it can also be otherworldly and challenging for sensitive kids. Some tools you should invest in before arriving are sunglasses or sun goggles, a swimming body or surf suit (to protect from sand and sun), some sort of shade device like an umbrella or cabana.
2. Have A Mock Beach Day
Before leaving for your trip, schedule a mock beach day at your home. Pull out a big towel and set it on the floor or lawn.
3. Get Prepared For The Airport
If you are flying into Myrtle Beach International Airport, consider using the autism quiet room before running to baggage claim. There you can catch your breath, grab a snack, and make a plan for what happens next.
4. Check The Tides
There are definitely busy times at the beaches. Morning and evenings are the quietest. If you access the tide schedule on-line, look for low
tide. This is when the tidal pools appear and make for safer, waveless swimming and opportunities to see a few sea creatures too!
Find Other Places For Swimming
If the ocean just seems too daunting, there are numerous locations for swimming in pools such as the water parks and probably even at your hotel or resort.
6. Plan Fun Adventures
If you anticipate needing some water adventures, check out a dolphin cruise or Pirate Adventure. Whatever attractions you choose to invest in, purchase your tickets before you arrive to avoid the long ticket lines and spend more time playing!
Explore Beyond The Beach
A very nice half-day trip to consider is Hopsewee Plantation or one of the two state parks in the area. There is plenty of space for running and the controlled natural setting provides inspiration for adventure, fantasy play and exploration.
HELPING PROTECT OUR VISITORS WITH
Project lifesaver.
Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce helps protect visitors with Autism, Down Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease who may get lost or wander off.
Through Project Lifesaver, lost or wandering visitors with these special needs can be tracked through a personalized wristband that emits a tracking signal. Those who wear the wristband can be quickly located and returned to their families and caregivers.
The chamber has several wristbands that visitors with special needs can use during their stay in the Myrtle Beach area. Project Lifesaver relies on proven radio technology and a specially trained search and rescue team.
When caregivers notify the local Project Lifesaver agency that a person is missing, a search and rescue team is dispatched to the wanderer’s area and starts searching with the mobile locator tracking system. Search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes.
For more information about Project Lifesaver, call the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce at (843) 626-7444 or visit our welcome center at 1200 N. Oak St., Myrtle Beach.
Autism-Friendly Vacation Guide

THE MYRTLE BEACH AREA GUIDE TO SWIM AND BEACH SAFETY
Check Beach my
If there is a swimming advisory at my favorite beach, does that mean water there is generally not safe?
No. Short-term swim advisories are for isolated spots at monitoring locations where swimming is not advised. Most advisories are temporary – lasting only a day or two.
South Carolina beach monitoring season begins May 1 and runs through October 1. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) routinely collects water samples at more than 120 locations along South Carolina’s beaches. If high numbers of bacteria are found, they issue an advisory for that portion of the beach.
Advisories do not mean that the beach is closed. Wading, fishing and shell collecting do not pose a risk. Advisories are often issued after heavy rainfalls when higher bacteria counts are detected and often last less than 24 hours. The advisory is lifted when sample results fall below the limit of 104CFU/100mL.
What is tested in beach water monitoring samples?
Enterococcus bacteria are tested in the samples to indicate presence of bacteria in the water. Elevated levels of these bacteria can indicate possible contamination for a short period of time.
What’s the best way to determine the most accurate, up-to-date information about the water quality at my favorite beach?
Visit www.CheckYourBeach.com and use the interactive GIS tool to find your beach and check the most recent test results for the area, as well as find information on all area beach access points and amenities.
Married GETTING The Beach AT
Beach weddings offer unique setting, amenities.
There’s nothing more romantic than getting married at The Beach.
Picture-perfect scenery, a variety of vendors, and endless activities for guests make The Beach your dream destination to tie the knot.
Whether you're looking for traditional, historical or a contemporary flair, there’s an appropriate venue for the wedding of your dreams to come true with plenty of options for lodging, activities, and restaurants to make the wedding party and guests happy.
Looking to propose to that special someone? Myrtle Beach has dozens of romantic places to pop the question - including the beach!
Plan Your Wedding
Start your wedding planning at VisitMyrtleBeach.com. Get info on accommodations, venues, vendors & more!
HOSTING A WEDDING ON The Beach
Of course, the most popular venue for any wedding at The Beach is on the sand.
If you’re planning to get married on the beach, it’s important to do your research first though, depending on where you are on the beach, there may be restrictions on how elaborate the ceremony can be.
If you are on a public beach, you can still have your wedding, but it can’t be commercial (meaning no tents, chairs or commercial equipment allowed). There are, however, private portions of the beach, where there are no restrictions on commercially produced weddings.
MARRIAGE LICENSES IN S.C.
Another one of the incentives to getting married in South Carolina is how easy it is to get a marriage license here compared to other states.
A license may be obtained in any county courthouse within the state for approximately $50. A photo ID and social security number are required, and the license is good for the entire state and has no expiration date.
Applications must be on file at least 24 hours before a license can be issued. Couples may fill out applications at the Government & Justice Centre in Conway. For more information, call (843) 915-5370.
Your Guide to Romance
Even if you’re not tying the knot, there’s plenty of romance to be had at The Beach. Find the best romantic restaurants, honeymoon spots & couple getaway ideas at VisitMyrtleBeach.com

15 best things to do in and around Myrtle Beach
Jan 23, 2022 • 8 min read
Myrtle Beach offers family activities, nature excursions, great seafood – and plenty of stretches of sand and surf, too © Getty Images
Wide, sandy and sun-drenched, the Grand Strand in South Carolina is a 60-mile stretch of captivating coastline.
This region offers 14 communities, each with its own personality – with Myrtle Beach as the charismatic center of gravity. Beachgoers have their pick of inviting shores, from crowded and lively to remote and quiet. Nature lovers are also spoiled for choice: salt marshes teem with wildlife, trails ribbon through maritime forests and botanical gardens bloom year-round. Fresh seafood abounds everywhere. And family fun, from putt-putt to zip lines, is a hallmark of the region.
If you only have a few days (and with the caveat that some attractions are only open in warmer months), here are some of the top things to do in and around Myrtle Beach.
Spend a day on the beach
Myrtle Beach is the anchor of the Grand Strand, and it’s the best bet for active beachgoers. Head here for water sports, oceanfront dining, Boardwalk shenanigans and summer festivals. Surfside Beach hugs the coast just south of Myrtle Beach. Also known as Family Beach, this two-mile stretch of sand has lifeguards, a gently sloping coastline and wacky golf-cart parades. It has also been recognized for its autism-friendly businesses .
Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park offer a more low-key experience as well as opportunities for hiking, camping and wildlife watching. Further south, Litchfield Beach earns loyal fans for its crowd-free coastline and relaxing small-town vibe. Neighbor Pawleys Island encourages all-day relaxing with its empty white-sand beaches, protective dunes and famous roped hammocks.
Ride the SkyWheel
This soaring landmark is no mere Ferris wheel. Rising 187ft above the downtown Boardwalk, the SkyWheel offers 10-to-15-minute “flights” in 42 temperature-controlled gondolas, which each hold up to six passengers. Most of the gondolas are fully accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters, while more than one million LED lights wow onlookers during the dynamic evening light show.
Savor fresh seafood in Murrells Inlet
Twenty-five minutes south of Myrtle Beach, this inviting fishing village is known as the seafood capital of South Carolina. Fishing boats pull up beside waterfront restaurants in Murrells Inlet, where chefs await the day’s catch. Linked by the half-mile wooden MarshWalk, popular seafood restaurants overlook weathered piers and lush marshlands, and offer a prime choice for a lovely evening out. One sure bet for fresh seafood? Head to Wicked Tuna , a hook-to-plate seafood restaurant that overlooks the inlet and employs its own fleet of fishing boats.
Kayak the coast
Paddlers seeking wildlife, coastal beauty and solitude have numerous options within a short drive of downtown Myrtle Beach. Salt marshes hug the coast at Murrells Inlet, where kayak tours float past pelicans, egrets, sea turtles and dolphins. Other trips explore the swampy wonders of the Waccamaw River and its moss-draped cypress trees, or drift past lonely islands and empty beaches strewn with shells and sand dollars. Most guided trips are great for families and last a half-day, with many trips offered year-round.
Go shag dancing at Fat Harold’s
Shag dancing (known as “shagging” in these parts) is the official dance of South Carolina. According to lore, this easy-going swing dance akin to a slow jitterbug was birthed in North Myrtle Beach in the 1940s and 1950s, with doo-wop, old-time R&B and beach music providing the irresistible soundtrack. You can watch – and join in on – all the moves at Fat Harold’s Beach Club and surrounding dance clubs most nights of the week. Lessons at Fat Harold’s are $10 on Monday nights – no partner needed – and free every other Tuesday night.
Marvel at a Night of a Thousand Candles
The most enchanting place in the Palmetto State in winter is Brookgreen Gardens , 16 miles south of Myrtle Beach. The Nights of a Thousand Candles take place from late November through the early New Year: after sunset, a tunnel of live oaks, all wrapped in strands of white lights, funnels visitors from the entrance to an illuminated wonderland of flowers, shrubs and trees. Statues of gods and goddesses cast mysterious shadows across fountains and pools in the twinkling darkness. These events sell out, so buy a ticket before your visit.
Horseback ride on the beach...and beyond
Horseback riding is allowed on designated sections of the Grand Strand from the third Saturday in November through the end of February. This means you can gallop – or perhaps gently walk – along the surf in winter. Most guided trips run 90 minutes and cost about $75; Grand Strand Horseback Riding leads outings from Myrtle Beach State Park . In warmer months, when the beaches are off-limits to horses, many companies guide riders across inland farms, where you might see cows and canals instead of sand and surf.
Stroll the Boardwalk
Anchored by the SkyWheel, the 1.2-mile Boardwalk is crammed with arcade games, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops, volleyball courts, beachwear stores and busy hotels. The all-American scene is not to be missed in summer, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Officially dubbed the Oceanfront Boardwalk & Promenade, the walkway stretches from the 2nd Ave pier area to 14th Ave North. The family-owned Gay Dolphin gift shop, open continuously for 75 years, hawks shells, t-shirts and souvenirs. RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar serves up cocktails with ocean views.
Bird-watch at Huntington Beach State Park
Scan the skies and salt marshes for great egrets, blue herrings and even bald eagles at Huntington Beach State Park , a favorite stopover for migrating birds and one of the top birding spots in the Southeast. Birdwatchers have spotted more than 350 species of birds at this 2500-acre park, which is home to maritime forests, freshwater and brackish marshes, shrub thickets, beaches and dunes. Pick up a bird checklist then stroll the marsh-flanked Causeway for the best viewing. The new Nature Center also has a birding area.
Seek out high-octane adventures for families
Smell the popcorn, hear the screams and feel the ocean breeze on the Swamp Fox, a classic wooden roller coaster that careens around Family Kingdom , an oceanfront amusement park packed tight with 35 rides. Funplex Myrtle Beach , which opened in 2021 at the northern end of the Boardwalk, has seven rides including the Sky Velocity, which drops riders six stories. At the beach, several family members can float above the ocean at once on parasailing trips – reaching heights of up to 500ft. Below, jet skis bounce across the waves with banana boats in tow as families cling tight.
Wander through WonderWorks
This eye-catching, upside-down building is the hub of this three-in-one attraction , an immersive adventure destination that is one part children’s museum, one part amusement park and one part science lab. Various interactive “wonder zones” bring scientific concepts to life, while the outdoor Soar + Explore area boosts the adrenaline factor with a zip line and three-level ropes course. WonderWorks is not unique to Myrtle Beach, but its mix of interactive physical and cerebral activities provides a fun alternative to a day of lying out in the sun.
Putt-putt with pirates and dinosaurs
Rome has ruins. London has pubs. And Myrtle Beach has mini-golf courses, with at last count more than 50 of them puttin’ their stuff (sorry). Some sources even say that the Grand Strand has more courses per square mile than any place in the country. What makes these 18-hole courses memorable? Their exuberant embrace of wacky themes. Pirate ships, dinosaur kingdoms, jungle wonderlands and Hawaiian backdrops have entertained families since the first course was built here in 1930. No ifs, ands, or...putts about it.
Immerse yourself in Gullah culture
Even after the brutal Middle Passage, enslaved workers on coastal South Carolina plantations retained many traditions from their West African homelands. Delve into this rich history, memorable customs and beautiful crafts in the coastal village of Georgetown, home to the Gullah Museum and the Rice Museum.
Zenobia Harper offers tours exploring Gullah culture several days per week at Hopsewee Plantation, a former rice-growing estate on the North Santee River. Workshops here teach sweetgrass basket weaving, a Gullah tradition since the 1700s. Brookgreen Gardens, built on the site of four former rice plantations, offers a weekly Gullah program (Jan–Nov). The Lowcountry Trail here spotlights the lives of those who owned and worked the fields.
Hit up Broadway on the Beach
With its unabashed embrace of shiny corporate excess, Broadway at the Beach may not offer an afternoon of Lowcountry authenticity. But this sprawling shopping, dining and entertainment complex – which surrounds a 23-acre lake – knows how to bring the rah-rah. Highlights include a lake-crossing zip line, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park carousel, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, dueling pianos at Crocodile Rocks and Ripley’s Aquarium, where penguins and the jellyfish beckon.
Sip craft beer
The outdoor beer garden at Crooked Hammock Brewery in North Myrtle Beach embraces backyard fun with hammocks, firepits, bocce ball, cornhole and a playground. Grand Strand Brewing Co, which opened in 2021, fills a two-story building in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. Enjoy live music and outdoor seating (including Adirondack chairs and picnic tables) as you sip an Airbrush Hazy IPA. Serious beer samplers will want to make the one-mile drive inland for the Dirty Myrtle DIPA at hyperlocal brewery New South Brewery, around since 1998.

Each gallery ranges from paintings to sculptures, collages, and any sort of art possible.
Surfside Beach
Located just south of the heart of Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach (115 Hwy 17 N) is one of the most popular beaches in the Myrtle Beach area.
Walk along the historic ½ mile boardwalk or take a stroll across the Surfside Beach Fishing pier.
The view during sunset is absolutely stunning!
Garden City Pier
Enjoy an experience at The Pier at Garden City (110 S. Waccamaw Dr.) where you could do some nighttime fishing, listen to live music, belt out a tune at karaoke, or play at the arcade.
The arcade includes skee ball, deal or no deal, clown roll down, and other games, plus a full cafe.
While you can just enjoy the views and vibes for free, hanging out at the Pier at Garden City can be one of the best inexpensive things to do in Myrtle Beach even if you decide to play some games.
Murrells Inlet MarshWalk
Located just 24 minutes from the heart of Myrtle Beach, the MarshWalk (4025 Hwy 17 Business) is located in the historic fishing village of Murrells Inlet.
The MarshWalk is a half-mile boardwalk with several excellent on-site restaurants.
From the MarshWalk, you can enjoy live music, sightseeing tours, kayaking, and shopping.
Huntington Beach State Park
Come out early to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise as you stroll along the beautiful 3-mile shoreline at Huntington Beach State Park (16148 Ocean HWY).
Bring a book and relax, go fishing, swimming, beachcombing, kayaking, or birding; this park has so much to offer!
Within the park is Atalaya, a beautiful castle, and a National Historic Landmark.
This castle was owned by renowned 20th-century sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband Archer Huntington, a Spanish scholar.
One look at Atalaya and you will certainly understand why she was so renowned!
Conway Riverwalk
Take a short 30-minute trip outside of Myrtle Beach and you will find yourself in Conway.
At the Conway Riverwalk (2nd Ave), there is a 1.5-mile historic trail that runs along the Waccamaw River.
This riverwalk is an excellent place to have a picnic before you venture out.
As you walk the trail, you will come to a playground with a nice view of the river.
Let the kids play while you relax and take in the scenery!
Horry County Museum
Would you like to know more about the history of Horry County?
The Horry County Museum (2279 Harris Short Cut Rd.) is a free museum and one of the best places to go to learn about the prehistory, natural history, and culture of Horry County.
This location is full of exhibits and offers different events you may enjoy as well.

The LW Paul Living History Museum showcases life on a Horry County family farm between 1900-1955.
As an extension of the Horry County Museum, you can expect interesting opportunities to learn about local history.
A free one-hour tour of the farm is available on Saturdays.
Myrtle Beach Mall
If you’re looking for some shopping in the air conditioning, venture over to the oldest mall in Myrtle Beach: the Myrtle Beach Mall (1110 N. Ocean Blvd).
Don’t let the fact that this is the oldest mall fool you though!
It is home to many hidden treasures and they are currently in the process of updating the mall.
Check out favorite shops like Fun Wear Sporting Goods, Dick’s, Bass Pro Shops, Books a Million, Ellie Beans, and, a favorite of the mall, Players Choice.
Player’s Choice Store and Arcade
Located within Myrtle Beach Mall, Players Choice (10177 N. Kings Hwy) is a site to see on its own!
Not only does this store bring huge feelings of nostalgia with its old-school NES, XBOX, SNES, and other games that are available for purchase, but next door you’ll find a full-on 80s arcade with video games and pinball machines.
As soon as you walk in, you feel like you stepped into an old-school arcade. One of the best things about this site is arcade games are only 25 cents to play!
Just like back in the day!
No need to pay for tokens, bring your quarters and get your game on.
This is a perfect spot for some cheap family fun at Myrtle Beach no matter the weather.
Barefoot Landing
Stroll around a 27-acre lake and enjoy the shopping, dining, and entertainment of Barefoot Landing (4898 Hwy 17 S).
During SummerFest, Barefoot Landing offers one of the best free activities in Myrtle Beach with its free live concerts every night.
Other shows include Nick Pike, a fire-juggling unicyclist who was on America’s Got Talent, and the Steel Drummers.
North Myrtle Beach
If you’re looking for a calm section of beach to kayak or paddleboard, North Myrtle Beach (902 2nd Ave N.) is typically the perfect place.
North Myrtle Beach also often has the clearest water in the area.
This is great if you want to catch a glimpse of all the wonderful sea life!
McLean Park
If relaxing and fresh air are at the top of your list, then McLean Park (93 Oak Dr.) should be on the list too.
During the summer, McLean Park has monthly summer family-friendly movies for free.
Sit in a huge gazebo overlooking a 2-acre lake and marvel at the wildlife, or let the kids play at the park, each lunch at one of three picnic shelters, grill on the charcoal grills, or take a rest in the meditation garden and watch the fountain.
Cherry Grove Beach
Known as Myrtle Beach’s best-kept secret, Cherry Grove Beach and Cherry Grove Point (6300 N Ocean Blvd) are two beautiful places to visit.
Cherry Grove Point is a secluded part of Cherry Grove Beach located at the northernmost tip.
This is a great place to visit if you’re looking for panoramic ocean views and peace and quiet.
Vereen Memorial Gardens
This little oasis is found just a stone’s throw away from Myrtle Beach in a town a few minutes north called Little River.
The historical Vereen Memorial Gardens (2250 SC-179) have all sorts of local wildlife and history.
A variety of birds call the gardens home and can be seen as you traverse through the multiple trails and wetlands.
A round trip on these trails is roughly 3 miles long.
