Designed, tested, tweaked, honed and perfected, the Trek Speed Concept TT/Triathlon Frameset is made for flat out performances, riding fast and hard in the pursuit of personal glory. Composed of Trek's 500 Series OCLV carbon, you can benefit from this established brand's lightest and strongest grade of carbon fibre, assuring you of the best transfer of power and lowest net weight.

Fabricated and tailored through a rigorous wind tunnel testing process, the latest Speed Concept has a crafted aerodynamic profile, shifting air effectively in order to reduce drag and boost the ease with which you forge your ultimate effort. The frame composed of Kammtail Virtual Foil aero tubing, this bike when built is made to cut effectively through the air. With a wholly integrated approach to the cockpit area preventing airflow from catching and eddying on protruding edges of the frame, you can be sure of a perfected aero ride.

Brakes too are integrated for a much improved aerodynamic positioning on the frame ensuring that you can be sure of a peak level of performance from the strong, integrated calipers. With a seatpost designed to closely shadow your wheel and an option to add a proprietary speed fin (sold separately) to extend from the bottom bracket, this frameset channels airflow away from the crank area, giving you a smoother, faster ride.

With a large range of adjustability built into this frameset, this carbon fibre all-out speed machine weighs just 3.6 kilos whilst providing you with perhaps the best possible aerodynamic experience when riding hard and with a goal in mind.

Please note, the front derailleur hanger is positioned to best function with 52/36t or 53/39t chainrings. A compact 50/34t chainset can be used, but only with a Shimano Ultegra R8000 mechanical front derailleur.

Trek updates Speed Concept time trial bike

The all-new Trek Speed Concept TT bike has been built as a total system that lets the bike, storage and rider work together to improve speed and efficiency

We first spotted what looked to be the new Trek Speed Concept time trial bike at Critérium du Dauphiné back in June and can finally confirm it has indeed broken cover. The Wisconsin-based company today announced that the Trek Speed Concept Triathlon bike and Speed Concept TT bikes are available for purchase. 

It's been seven years since Trek last updated the Speed Concept bike. The new version brings a surplus of contemporary changes with a distinct focus on real-world usability where the bike and rider work together as one system. With Trek making a big deal about the Concept Speed's efficiency, adjustability and speed, it has all the makings of one of the best time trial bikes .

Faster than ever

Trek claims the Speed Concept is the fastest bike its ever tested and claims the new bike saves a full six minutes, compared to the old bike, over the Kona full Ironman race course, which equates to about 16w at a speed of 45km/h. Of those six minutes, it credits four minutes purely to aerodynamic optimisation. Trek is also keen to, again, make it clear that most of the drag reduction comes from the interaction between the rider and the bike and, by considering the system, the Speed Concept makes the rider faster. 

First, there's the question of what the other two minutes in time savings come from? The credit there goes to the move to disc brakes. Although disc brakes generate drag, they allow more freedom compared to the rim-brake equivalent when it comes to the design of the wheels, and the frame and fork interface - making for an aero advantage. The next place Trek looked to optimise was the storage system. To be fast over long distances a rider needs to carry nutrition, hydration, and a flat repair kit. According to Trek, the best systems on the market were drag neutral but it was able to go beyond that with the Speed Concept by taking advantage of the shapes needed for hydration. 

Storage, assembly and pricing

The between-the-arms (BTA) bottle enhances aerodynamics by smoothing air in this area. A clip near the arm allows for drinking from the roughly 700ml capacity without ever leaving the aero bars. It's also easy to refill during a race with a port on the top that accepts the nozzle of another bottle.

While the BTA bottle is a separate purchase, the downtube bottle comes standard on the Speed Concept bike. Capacity is 750ml and, like the BTA bottle, it also enhances aerodynamics. Trek says the system is 14 per cent faster when the bottle is in place.

Outside of hydration, there are two additional storage solutions onboard which cover opportunities to enhance aerodynamics. The bento box and the flat repair storage take advantage of the increased frame space to hide from the wind. Up top, the bento box allows for organisation via two optional dividers and has space for about eight gels in total. The flat repair storage system resides behind the downtube bottle and only requires removing the bottle, not the cage, to access it.

Adjustment also plays a massive part in the new bike's appeal. Extensive adjustment in every direction is possible in the front end and there's no need to re-cable the bike because of slotted and split spacers, and travel to and from events are now a simple exercise thanks to the removable base bar. 

Trek has also included a top-tube-located IsoSpeed pivot. The implementation in this bike is new though and specific to the triathlon category making the new bike 40 per cent more compliant than the outgoing model.

For dedicated time triallists, Trek has also revealed the new Speed Concept TT bike, which is available only as a frameset. It takes the aerodynamic design and tailors it to a different challenge. Without the need for covering long distances, the TT version strips down everything possible. It's the lightest version of the same design and lacks the provisions for long-distance riding.

Whichever bike you need, purchase of the Speed Concept is only available through the Trek Project One system. In this way Trek allows the rider to get the exact bike allowing customisation through the use of frame colour.

History of Khabarovsk Krai

In the Middle Ages, the territory of today’s Khabarovsk Krai was inhabited mainly by the peoples of the Tungus-Manchu language group, as well as Nivkhs. In China they were known collectively as “wild Jurchen”. In the 13th-14th centuries, the Mongol rulers of China repeatedly organized expeditions to the lower Amur.

Russians began the development of the Far East in the 17th century. In 1639, a Cossack troop headed by Ivan Moskvitin reached the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The first stockade town was built in the mouth of the Ulya River. Later, Vasily Danilovich Poyarkov and Yerofei Pavlovich Khabarov were the first who started joining the Amur lands to Russia. Before Russians came here, the tribes of Daurs, Evenks, Natks, Gilyaks and others lived in this area (only about 30 thousand people).

The area was quickly populated by Russian settlers; new stockade towns were founded. But the process was interrupted due to a conflict with the Qing Dynasty. From the 1680s, Manchus started to fight against the Russian state.

More Historical Facts…

Russia could not move significant military forces to the Amur region and had to sign the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689). According to it, Russians had to leave the left bank of the Amur River but managed to uphold its rights for the area behind Lake Baikal and the Sea of Okhotsk coast.

In the 18th century, Okhotsk became the main Pacific port of the Russian Empire. Development of the northern coast of the Pacific, exploration of the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin prepared the basis for the return of the Amur region.

In 1847, Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov was appointed a governor-general of Eastern Siberia. He did his best to return the Amur area to the Russian Empire. The number of Russians in the region began to grow. In 1858, the town of Khabarovsk was founded.

As a result of the weakening of China during the Opium Wars, two agreements were signed - the Aigun Treaty in 1858 and the Beijing Treaty in 1860. The Russian-Chinese border was established on the Amur and Ussuri rivers.

In 1884, Zabaikalskaya, Amurskaya and Primorskaya regions were united into Priamurskoye region with the center in Khabarovsk. Until the late 19th century, the Amur area was settled slowly. The situation changed in the early 20th century. In 1900, the Trans-Baikal Railway was opened, in 1902 - the Chinese Eastern Railway.

As a result, the number of settlers grew rapidly. In 1900-1913, about 300,000 peasants from other regions of the Russian Empire came to the Amur area. There were three towns (Khabarovsk, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur and Okhotsk) on the territory, which makes Khabarovsk krai today. By 1915, there were more than six thousand settlements with a total population of 316,300 people in Primorskaya oblast.

The Civil War lead to a great number of deaths and economic collapse in Russia. The restoration of pre-war level of economy was achieved by 1926. New cities were built in the region - Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Birobidzhan. October 20, 1938, Dalnevostochny region was divided into Khabarovsky and Primorsky regions.

In 1947-1948, Sakhalin and Amur regions were separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1953, Magadan region was formed and separated from Dalnevostochny region. In 1956, Kamchatka region became independent too. In 1991, the Jewish autonomous region was separated from Dalnevostochny region.

Khabarovsk Krai - Features

Khabarovsk Krai is one of the largest administrative-territorial units of the Russian Federation. The territory of the region stretches for about 1,800 kilometers from north to south, and for 125-750 km from west to east. The distance from Khabarovsk to Moscow is 8,533 km by rail, 8,385 by roads and 6,075 km by air.

Part of the southern boundary of the Khabarovsk region is the state border of Russia with China. The province is washed by the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan. The coastline extension is 3,390 km, including islands, the largest of them are Shantarsky Islands. The highest point is Berill Mountain (2,933 meters).

The climate of the region changes from north to south. Winters are long and snowy. The average temperature in January is in the range of minus 22-40 degrees Celsius, on the coast - minus 18-24 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot and humid. The average temperature in July is about plus 15-20 degrees Celsius.

In general, Khabarovsk Krai is one of the most sparsely populated regions of Russia, which is due, firstly, the general economic decline of the post-Soviet time, and secondly - the severity of the local climate, comparable with the regions of the Far North.

The largest cities and towns are Khabarovsk (613,500), Komsomolsk-on-Amur (239,400) Amursk (38,200), Sovetskaya Gavan (22,900), Nikolaevsk-on-Amur (17,400), Bikin (15,900).

Khabarovsk Krai - Economy and Transport

The main branches of the local economy are mechanical engineering and metalworking, ferrous metallurgy, mining, fishing, food, light and timber industries. The mineral resources of the region include gold, tin, aluminum, iron, coal and lignite, graphite.

The main highways of Khabarovsk Krai are M60 “Ussuri” (Khabarovsk - Ussuriysk - Vladivostok) and M58 “Amur” (Chita - Never - Svobodny - Arkhara - Birobidzhan - Khabarovsk). The railway station “Khabarovsk-2” is a large railway hub. The directions are as follows: to the south (to Vladivostok and Port Vostochny), to the west (to Moscow) and to the north (to Komsomolsk-on-Amur).

The river port in Khabarovsk is the largest on the Amur River. The other river ports of the region are located in Komsomolsk and Nikolayevsk. The sea ports of the region are Okhotsk, Ayan, Nikolayevsk-on-Amur, Vanino, Sovetskaya Gavan.

Tourism in Khabarovsk Krai

The rich natural potential of the region provides endless opportunities for the development of ecological tourism. You can see reindeer, brown and Himalayan bears, bighorn sheep and even the Siberian tigers on the territory of Khabarovsk krai.

The Amur River is the main attraction of the region. Most of natural, cultural and historical tourist sites are concentrated in the valley of this river.

Shantarsky Islands, one of the most beautiful and unique places of unspoiled nature, are another natural attraction of this region. The inaccessibility of the islands allowed to preserve pristine nature. Shantarsky Islands are a habitat of whales, seals, killer whales. It is a great place for fishing.

If you prefer ethnographic tourism, you may be interested in cave paintings located near the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan and Lake Bolon, which is a large bird sanctuary. In the past, there were a Buddhist temple and ancient settlements in the vicinity of the lake.

Lovers of adventure tourism may be interested in rafting, fishing tours, caving and winter recreation.

The best time for tourism in Khabarovsk krai: “late spring - early summer”, “end of summer - early fall.”

The largest international airport in the region is located in Khabarovsk. The flights to Moscow, Vladivostok, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Novosibirsk, Yakutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Bangkok, Seoul, Harbin are available.

Khabarovsk: The city on the 5,000 ruble banknote

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The cultural center of the Far East

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors. 

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River.
