The Daytime Disco Event For Over 30s By Line Of Duty’s Vicky McClure Is Returning To Manchester

Mancs can expect the perfect party music playlist, personally curated by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers and Vicky McClure of 'Line of Duty' fame.

Alice Lorenzato-Lloyd

Queueing up on a cold, rainy night waiting and shivering to get into the club, you hear the thump of the bass reverberating out into the street and sober up bit by bit as the showers continue to pour. You’re finally inside and suddenly you find yourself yawning, wearied by the playlist of either unknown or over-played tracks and deep down you just want to inhale some cheesy chips and roll into bed to get those precious eight hours of sleep. Sound familiar? Well, Day Fever knows you well and is bringing back its much-loved daytime disco to Manchester that doesn’t ruin your Sunday once again.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by DayFever (@dayfeveruk)

Day Fever, an ironic nod to the Bee Gees hit Night Fever , has become a viral hit by offering a ‘ nightclub’ experience held in the daytime . The Day Fever series mean attendees can still catch an early night, with the Manchester event running between 3pm and 8pm .

After an astonishing appetite for a nightclub in the afternoon, with events selling out in Sheffield, Glasgow and London, Day Fever is now coming back for more by returning to New Century in Manchester on Sunday 5th May, 2024 after much success over the weekend just gone (March 2) in the city. Mancs can expect the perfect party music playlist, personally curated by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers and Vicky McClure of Line of Duty fame, as well as her film producer partner Jonny Owen , hosting another afternoon of no holds barred party times!

new-century-60th-anniversary-manchester

Vicky McClure speaks for us all when she says: “Manchester had to be on our list for Day Fever, it just had to be! It’s a city we all know and love and we can’t wait to bring our disco to such an amazing venue. So get your glad rags on and come and join us for a proper party. We can’t wait to see you next year!”

Day Fever is an event for all those aged 30 years old and over so don’t forget your ID, even if you haven’t been asked for it in a while… Attendees are also kindly asked to refrain from petting on the dancefloor (unless it’s the smooch/slow section), pushing, running and bombing, as well as acrobatics or gymnastics (vigorous dancing is encouraged instead).

Fancy a daytime disco that’s not in your kitchen? You can sign up for tickets, which start from £12.06 , to the Day Fever event in Manchester this May here .

Never forget the rave in the toilets too...

Daisy Jackson

La Discotheque, one of the world’s best club nights, is making its return to Manchester this weekend and will be taking over the Albert Hall.

Famed for throwing immersive disco and house parties, La Discotheque will be heavy on the confetti, the feathers, and the sequins, as well as its unrivalled production.

This Saturday, the event will be hosting the legendary Kenny Dope, the La Discotheque Orchestra, Jeremy Underground, O’Flynn, Heléna Star, Guy Williams (Flash), BB (Supernature) and What She Said.

The news of the event’s return to Manchester follows an impressive set at London’s Drumsheds opening party (that’s the new super club built inside an old IKEA).

There’ll be an 18-piece La Discotheque Orchestra with brass, strings, percussion and vocalists breathing new life into iconic disco anthems.

And the whole roster is packed with disco and house legends, like four-time Grammy-nominated producer Kenny Dope, also one half of Masters At Work.

He’s also behind significant releases such as The Bomb! & Get Up (Clap Your Hands).

Can you believe we’re already into our last full week of April, and May is right around the corner?

So far, April has been full of foodie festivals, cultural celebrations, wholesome spring-themed events, and so much more – and thankfully, there’s more where that came from as there’s loads more in the Greater Manchester social calendar for everyone of all ages to be getting involved with throughout this week too.

If you’re finding it a bit tricky to pick what to do, we’ve chosen a few of the best bits for another edition of our ‘ what’s on ‘ guide.

Here’s some of our recommendations.

Bloomtown Blossom Trail

Manchester City Centre

Monday 22 April – onwards

Stunning pink blossom at Parsonage Gardens

Manchester never looks better than it does when all the blossom trees burst back to life, right? Well now there’s a walking trail through town that shows off the best bits.

From the iconic purple blooms outside the Central Library, to the surprising sprays that pop up in the middle of Ancoats, there are pretty colours appearing all over, so the National Trust is once again shining a spotlight on Manchester and bringing back its new-and-improved Bloomtown Map.

There are 39 spots all over the city centre (and slightly beyond) included along the route, each one showcasing one of the city’s most picturesque locations.

Find out more about 2024’s trail here .

Tales of Manchester 2.0

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel

nightclub tour manchester

A brand-new art exhibition curated by visual artist Emma Evans in partnership with six other creators is now open in Manchester, and it’s completely free to visit.

Tales of Manchester 2.0 down at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is a collection of multi-platform art celebrating our brilliant city, and it’s showcasing six spoken word pieces by established Manchester based poets – Griot Gabriel, Ilaria Passeri, Lisa O’Hare, Mark Jackson aka Keith’s Brother, Matt Concannon aka The Thirsty Poet, and Sarah Attwell.

The spoken word is paired with visual pieces painted by self-taught artist Emma Evans, where the words have served as inspiration for the art.

The Manchester College ‘Greater Mancunians’ Exhibition

Manchester Central Library

nightclub tour manchester

Photography students from The Manchester College will be showcasing their ‘Greater Mancunians’ project as part of a landmark exhibition at Manchester Central Library’s Main Exhibition Hall from this week.

150 students have participated in the groundbreaking photography project, and it features images of some of Manchester’s most famous and influential people shot at numerous locations across the city.

More than 100 contributors are featured in the project, including musicians Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr, athletes Diane Modahl and Ricky Hatton, local politicians Andy Burnham, Angela Rayner, and Bev Craig, actors Maxine Peake and Bill Roache, artists Stan Chow and AKSE P-19, and other local figures like Jonathan Warburton, Simon Martin, and Professor Erinma Bell MBE.

Did you see that one of the biggest charity shops has recently opened here in Greater Manchester?

The independently-run Regenerage superstore is the newest resident at the massively-popular Middlebrook Retail Park in Bolton.

Inside the huge 10,958 sq ft store, shoppers can find everything from ladies and menswear, to homeware, furniture, and children’s clothing too, plus books, and new white goods – including washing machines, fridge freezers, and more.

There’s also a specially-created bridal and occasional wear department too.

And if all of that didn’t sound brilliant enough as it is, there’s even the chance to get your hands on designer brands like Vivienne Westwood, Ralph Lauren, and Armani, all without the hefty price tag.

Science and Industry Museum

nightclub tour manchester

Did you know there’s a huge gaming event currently happening in Manchester?

With more than 160 consoles and hundreds of games to play, Power UP is back for more in 2024 down at the Science and Industry Museum, and it’s taking ticket-holders on a journey through five decades of gaming every weekend.

There’s everything from retro arcade games, to state-of-the-art virtual reality, and so much more to get stuck into, and each ticket includes unlimited play all day.

Pieminister’s Bottomless Brunch

Pieminister’s legendary pie bottomless brunch with free-flowing drinks has finally made a comeback.

The popular pie restaurant chain – which has two sites here in Manchester city centre on Church Street in the Northern Quarter, and on Deansgate – is known and loved all across the UK for its thick and chunky pies, but its bottomless brunch offering is something else.

Whether you’re a meat lover, a veggie, vegan, flexitarian, or gluten free, there’s something to suit everyone on the menu.

Greater Manchester’s iconic heritage railway is hosting one of the most unique fine dining experiences in the region this week.

Fancy heading out a walk somewhere in Greater Manchester and beyond this week?

The weather is FINALLY warming up a little, and it’s beginning to feel like we might finally have made it through winter.

So that means it’s time for a walk, right?

Some of the green spaces that wrap around Greater Manchester are in their prime right now with blossoms, bluebells, and more – and that’s saying something, as they’re pretty spectacular all year round – so it couldn’t be a more perfect time to go for a walk to appreciate their beauty.

You can expect a jam-packed day full of different outdoor family-friendly activities, performances, markets, and lots of local food and drink.

Ex-Paw Extravaganza

Angel Meadow Park

nightclub tour manchester

A festival especially for dogs is all set to take over a popular Manchester city centre park for some “paw-tastic fun” this weekend.

And the best bit about it? It’s absolutely FREE to head on down to.

Back by popular demand, the  Ex-Paw Extravaganza  festival is returning to Angel Meadow Park near Manchester‘s Green Quarter this Saturday for a jam-packed day of “pawsome activity”.

Kicking off from 11am and running right through until 4pm, this year’s dog-themed festivities include a selection of different stalls to shop from, dog agility courses, puppy play areas, hands-on pet first aid courses, and so much more.

Looking for somewhere to go for a hearty roast dinner in and around Greater Manchester this weekend?

From the moment we start to feel the weekend rolling in, we can’t help but turn our thoughts to Sunday roasts, steaming jugs of gravy, and big glasses sploshing over with red wine.

It’s just the best feeling, and there’s plenty of it to be found here in our region.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by THE MANC EATS 🥡 (@themanceats)

We’re used to it being wet and miserable most of the year, and while we do love Sunday lunch on a sun-soaked afternoon in the beer garden when we get the chance, nothing warms the cockles more on those darker days than a giant plate piled high with roasted meats, vegetables, and gravy.

Read our round-up of some of the best Greater Manchester roast dinners here .

The Tortured Poets Department - a Taylor Swift listening party is happening this week in Manchester

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, popstars in the world right now will be releasing a brand-new album this Friday, and there’s a dedicated listening party happening in Manchester especially for the occasion.

Yes, we’re of course talking about Taylor Swift .

In case you aren’t a Swiftie, or you just generally weren’t aware, Taylor Swift announced back in early February that she would be unleashing her eleventh studio album , titled The Tortured Poets Department , on the world on 19 April.

Just like anything the 34-year-old singer-songwriter does, the surprise announcement of the new album – which is a follow-up to her 2022 critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY award-winning album, Midnights – pretty much broke the internet when it happened, and her dedicated fans have been counting down the days ever since.

Now, after months of eagerly waiting, the big day is finally happening this Friday, and in a bid to properly mark what a massive day it will be, one popular Manchester venue has decided to host a dedicated listening party , so that Swifties can unite under one roof and celebrate the special occasion together.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Fairfield Social Club (FSC) which has recently opened its doors in the heart of Manchester city centre , is inviting fans to “gather with your closest Swifties” and head on down to its Green Quarter venue this Friday for a night that’s “dedicated to Tay Tay and her legacy”.

Not only will you get to hear The Tortured Poets Department in full from start to finish surrounded by dozens of fellow fans, but there’ll also be a bunch of other Swift-themed activities too.

nightclub tour manchester

These include a Taylor Swift pub quiz with questions to all about her life and groundbreaking career to test your knowledge, friendship bracelet-making sessions, and just the chance to share the love and swap stories with other Swifties.

If all of that didn’t sound brilliant enough as it is, there’s also set to be a selection of themed cocktails to sip whilst you spend time ruminating on what Taylor meant in the lyrics of her songs only released a few hours prior.

Oh, and the best bit? FSC promises there “won’t be a Scooter Braun in sight” on the night.

  • You can now take a university course on Taylor Swift
  • Eurovision 2024 final to be screened live in cinemas across Greater Manchester
  • Taylor Swift and The 1975’s Matty Healy are reportedly ‘no longer romantically involved’

The Tortured Poets Department Listening Party is taking over Fairfield Social Club this Friday 19 April from 7pm right through until 10pm – with tickets now on sale setting you back just £6 each, and already selling fast.

Grab tickets to the party here .

The best gigs and club nights in Manchester November 2023

All the very best gigs and club nights happening in town this month

By Manchester's Finest | Last updated 16 February 2024

(Credit: Rob Jones)

This month we have the return of Manchester’s biggest queer rave, some hip hop big dogs, edgy girl groups and some Manc legends back on stage, where they belong.

Read on for the best gigs and club nights in Manchester in November.

Homobloc at Depot Mayfield

Saturday 4 November

What a way to kick off November. The mighty queer party for all Homobloc returns with another thunderous line-up to fill the Depot Mayfield up with pure joy. The Blessed Madonna will be back, alongside Jessie Ware, Peaches, Confidence Man, SHERELLE, Horse Meat Disco, Prosumer, Todd Edwards and the legendary David Morales. Local talent will also be hugely represented by the likes of Flesh legends Kath McDermott and DJ Paulette, Supernature, Your Dad Sells Avon, Mix-stress, Gina Breeze, Veba and Jamie Bull. Bringeth it on.

Little Simz at Victoria Warehouse

Sunday 5 November

“Though she be but little she is fierce,” Shakespeare said of Little Simz (not really). But the sentiment remains, and the Brit Award-winning rapper, singer and actress arrives in Manchester this month, after being last seen in these parts at Parklife. She tore it right up there, and will do the same at the Viccy Warehouse.

Trafford Wharf Rd, Trafford Park, Stretford, Manchester M17 1AB

nightclub tour manchester

50 Cent at AO Arena

Friday 10 November

Fiddy himself will be returning to Manchester for his first performance since his main stage appearance at Parklife in 2022. In a stat to make everyone feel old, it’s 20 years since his pivotal album Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ (he got rich in the end), and this ‘Final Lap’ tour (sounds kind of final) will see him joined on stage at the AO by the legendary Busta Rhymes too, so two icons for the price of one.

Victoria Station Approach, Hunts Bank, Manchester M3 1AR

nightclub tour manchester

Jessie Ware at Victoria Warehouse

Jessie Ware is heading on tour in support of her fifth studio offering ‘That! Feels! Good!’, the disco-fuelled record which was released earlier this year. Latest singles ‘Free Yourself’ and ‘Pearls’ have helped cement the singer, songwriter (and podcaster) in her position at the forefront of UK pop. Catch Jessie live at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse on Friday 10 November.

Brand New Heavies at the Bridgewater Hall

Thursday 16 November

Acid Jazz icons the Brand New Heavies will be stopping in Manchester as part of their greatest hits tour, but with some added orchestral splendour thrown in. They’ll be playing tracks from Never Stop… The Best Of accompanied by the London Concert Orchestra, so those soulful strings should truly hit home in spine-tingling style.

The Bridgewater Hall, Lower Mosley St, Manchester M2 3WS

nightclub tour manchester

The Prodigy at AO Arena

Friday 17 November

90s legends The Prodigy are back in town this month with their Army of Ants Tour 2023. The forthcoming arena shows mark the second string of dates without their iconic singer Keith Flint, who sadly passed away in 2019. The ‘Firestarter’ hitmakers stop at Manchester’s AO Arena on Friday 27 November before embarking on dates across the UK and Europe.

nightclub tour manchester

BC Camplight

American singer-songwriter BC Camplight is back. Whilst the news of new album ‘The Last Rotation Of Earth’ from Brian Christinzio was somewhat out of the blue, it was very-much welcomed. Initially from Philadelphia but now a proud adopted Mancunian, BC Camplight will play one his biggest shows to date at Manchester’s Albert Hall on Friday 17 November.

27 Peter St, Manchester, M2 5QR

Skrillex

WHP and Eat Your Own Ears presents Curated By Skrillex

Saturday 18 November

Sonny Moore – aka Skrillex – will be in charge of putting the line-up together for this mind-bender of a night at the Warehouse Project. The man himself will be nabbing a headline slot in the Depot room, as you’d expect, with support in the form of Peggy Gou (who’ll be going back-to-back with Four Tet), Ben UFO, Manchester’s own Interplanetary Criminal, Flowdan, SHERELLE, HAAi, Josey Rebelle, Pangaea and Krysko.

Friendly Fires at Victoria Warehouse

Friday 24 November

It’s been a solid decade and a half since Friendly Fires released their self-titled debut album. Tracks like Skeleton Boy, Jump In The Pool, White Diamonds and, of course, the anthemic Paris blended everything from post-punk to punk-funk to shoegaze to electronica, and cemented the lads from St Albans as an underground pop force to be reckoned with. They’ll be playing the whole album in full, and we’ll be bellowing it back to them.

Girl Ray

Now Wave presents Girl Ray at Soup

Dead trendy North London new wave girl band Girl Ray hit up Soup with their smart indie-pop vibes, off the back of their Prestige album, the band’s third through the eclectic Moshi Moshi imprint.

31-33 Spear St, Manchester M1 1DF

Speakers Corner Quartet

Speakers Corner Quartet at New Century

Wednesday 22 November

Spinning off the revered spoken word and hip-hip night, founded in Brixton in 2006, Speakers Corner Quartet will be heading to New Century for a full orchestral show. They’ll be joined by the mighty Manchester Camerata, Coby Sey, Confucius MC, James Massiah, Lea Sen, Leilah, Tawiah and Eska for a night of fine beats and enviable flow, while conductor Robert Ames, who’s worked with the likes of Frank Ocean, Actress and Sigur Rós, handles the strings and whatnot.

34 Hanover St, Manchester M4 4AH

Black Grape at the Albert Hall

It’s the return of the mighty Black Grape, Shaun Ryder’s demented project with MC Kermit, formerly of Hulme hip hop crew the Ruthless Rap Assassins. Expect chaotic renditions of In The Name Of The Father, Reverend Black Grape and the wobbly Tramazi Parti, as well as a raft of new vibrations from their forthcoming fourth album Orange Head, due out this month.

27 Peter St, Manchester M2 5QR

Alabama 3 at The Ritz

Saturday 25 November

Brixton-born Alabama 3 will be bringing their acid-country dubtronica to The Ritz, and yes while they might be known for one track in particular (Woke Up This Morning, which was featured as the theme tune of a certain mobster drama, and which was reinvigorated when everyone started re-watching said show during lockdown), they’ve got plenty more in the arsenal, from some 13 albums in their back catalogue.

Whitworth St W, Manchester M1 5NQ

Deptford Northern Soul Club

Deptford Northern Soul Club at YES

DNSC Residents Will Foot and Lewis Henderson will be conveying their love of all things crackly, seven-inch and soulful (thanks, initially, to Lewis’s dad’s record collection which gave them the bug) to the good folk of Manchester. They’ll be taking on the Pink Room at YES for a frank and thorough knees-up, so bring some loose and flappy trousers for the high kicks and a pocket full of talc for the slipping and sliding.

38 Charles St, Manchester M1 7DB

nightclub tour manchester

Anne-Marie at AO Arena

Sunday 26 November

A West End star, three-time karate champion and a BRIT Award-nominee? Anne-Marie is a real triple threat. Pop’s leading lady and The Voice judge is back on tour this month, with a stop in Manchester in celebration of new album ‘Unhealthy’ – which features a collab with Country superstar Shania Twain. The ‘2002’ singer will play Manchester’s AO Arena on Sunday 26 November, the penultimate night of her UK tour.

Aficionado at The Pink Room

The Aficionado crew have been nailing those eclectic balearic vibes for a solid 25 years, which is nice. Residents Moonboots and Jason Boardman will be joined for this all-dayer by like-minded chums for this blow out at the Pink Room at YES, including former Cafe Del Mar man Phil Mison, Brenda Ray, J-Walk/Fat City don Martin Brew and Nev Cottee. It’s free in, but a ticket is advised. Get shuffling.

A look back at Manchester’s greatest nightclubs and venues

How many have you been to?

Avatar photo

Over the years numerous iconic nightclubs, bars and pubs have disappeared from Manchester. Some of these venues have been legendary, others, well, were just a bit dodgy. Either way, if you visited one it will have left a lasting impression – whether this is positive or negative is another question entirely. With that in mind, what better time to take a little trip down memory lane and remember some of the forgotten clubs of our city. Enjoy… Piccadilly 21s

Piccadilly 21s was a ‘90s party paradise located in Piccadilly Gardens. It had a reputation for being very loud, very messy and very sticky, with cheap drinks to boot – there were even chandeliers in the bogs. Unfortunately it also had a reputation for being rough as owt, after it managed to attract gang members and other unsavoury clientele in the late ‘80s and 90s, and it eventually shut down in 2004.

These days it’s a Premier Inn and a Nando’s – so the floors are probably just as sticky to be fair.

Besides having a name which would prove a branding nightmare for modern PR-led venues, Rotters boasted some of the best parties in the city, after it took over the site from Romanoff’s. Located at the top of Oxford Road, in the ‘70s and ‘80s Rotters was a hugely popular nightclub, especi

It was housed inside the old Gaumont Cinema, and sadly the whole building was demolished in 1990 and replaced by an NCP car park.

Pips, located behind the cathedral, was a popular nightclub in the ‘70s, and was frequented by local musical celebs like Joy Division, Ian Brown, Morrissey and Johnny Marr. It boasted four different rooms playing a variety of music, including a Punk room, Soul room and the infamous Roxy room with a huge Brian Ferry painting on the wall. Pips closed in the early ‘80s before becoming a club called Konspiracy – which closed not long after.

The Plaza was one of the city’s most popular venues to dance to the likes of Sinatra and Elvis in the ‘60s, and was located on Oxford Street. Owned by Jimmy Savile, the disgraced DJ pioneered lunchtime disco sessions for the city’s young workers, where you could grab a quick lunch and soft drink while having a dance. It later turned into Tiffany’s in the ‘70s, complete with fake palm trees and loads of disco balls, before finally becoming Tropicana, which closed in the late ‘80s. It’s now a Pizza Express.

The Hacienda We couldn’t do a list of iconic Mancunian nightclubs and not include what is arguably one of the most famous venues in the world.

Founded by Tony Wilson in 1982, the Hacienda managed to define a whole era in the city, putting ‘Madchester’ on the map. Acid House and rave culture was born here – as were New Order and the Happy Mondays.

The club closed in 1997 and was demolished 18 months later, with a block of nondescript red brick flats now on the site – called The Hacienda Apartments.

Jilly’s Rockworld

Jilly’s was a Manchester institution. Originally called Fagin’s, it opened in 1970 on Oxford Road before being renamed Jilly’s in 1983, eventually adding Rockworld to the end.

The alternative club was always packed full with a cross section of people with a passion for guitar music, including punks, skaters, goths, metalheads, and indie kids.

Underneath was another club called the Musicbox – previously Rafters – but sadly both venues shut their doors back in 2010.

Remembering Manchester’s lost underground market that now lies empty beneath the city

Do you have memories of shopping in the underground Market Centre?

Avatar photo

Manchester used to have an underground market that now lies abandoned beneath the city centre.

If you walk along Market Street, you’re walking above what used to be the Market Centre – an underground shopping area filled with stalls and units selling music, clothes and a variety of other essential and non-essential items.

The underground Market Centre opened in 1972 and was a busy and bustling shopping emporium, much like the Arndale and Market Street both are today.

nightclub tour manchester

Punks would shop there for outfits, music fans could browse through the vinyl record shops and buy tickets to gigs at Piccadilly Box Office. It even had a Stolen from Ivor – which was the first place in Manchester to sell the jeans brand Levi’s, and where many would flock to get their hands on a pair of 501s.

Fashion addicts could hit up shops including Roxy, Oasis and Justins as well as a number of other boutique stalls, including the leather shop, for cool jackets.

DJs could sift through the collections at Underground Records Import and fans could shop at iconic music stalls including Collectors Records, Yvonne’s Record Stall, and the Spinn Inn Disc Centre.

nightclub tour manchester

The Market Centre was the place to be throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s until it closed down in 1989.

The entrance to it was located on Brown Street, with two other entrances on Norfolk Street and Spring Gardens. It  had escalators going down under the pavement that led to this total treasure trove.

If you head to the Tesco on Market Street and go down  to the lower level, you’re actually in what used to be part of the underground market.

But now it has fallen into disrepair, with the odd urban explorer who has dared to delve into the depth of the city to see what remains of this now eerie, decaying ghost market.

nightclub tour manchester

One explorer, known as Urban Sherman on YouTube, went down to have a look at what’s left of these once bustling underground stalls. Finding a way into where the old main entrance was located, down by the side of Tesco behind the food trailer, he climbs in and lands on the old steps with tiled walls.

As torches light up the dark depths of the city, we can see wires hanging, rubble strewn across the floor, graffiti on walls and one rusty sign that reads: “factory prices.”

It appears a wall of breeze blocks has been put up to block off any entry along the halls of the former market with the rest of it inaccessible, only to live on in the memories of those who once shopped there, and in old archived photographs.

The legendary nightclubs that Mancunians would most like to bring back

Remember any of these?

nightclub tour manchester

We asked our readers which nightclubs that no longer exist they would choose to bring back – and we got some great answers.

If you could choose just one, which would it be?

Here’s a list of former nightclubs that people would love to see return, as chosen by Proper Manchester readers .

nightclub tour manchester

The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk was a nightclub based on Little Peter Street in Manchester which was open from 1986 to 1999. It was a multi-floor nightclub, gig venue and rehearsal complex all in one.

It’s where Oasis played their first ever gig in 1992 and saw many notable bands that were a part of the Madchester music scene, including the likes of Inspiral Carpets, Doves, Happy Mondays, James and more. These days, it’s used as an office space.

There’s a blue plaque bolted to the wall which reads: “Remember me. I was something once.” It has a yellow smiley face in a nod to the Madchester acid house era.

Club Phoenix

Located on University Precinct, on Oxford Road, this sweatbox of a student dive would have music blaring on different nights, playing everything from indie bangers to dance classics and everything in between.

It was a scream club filled with young students looking for cheap drinks and cheap thrills too. There were plenty of messy drunken shenanigans. Being close to the Academy, it would be a great place for the young ‘uns to go for pre-gig bevvies.

nightclub tour manchester

The New Continental Club

The New Continental Club was on Harter Street, Manchester and opened in 1967 . It was affectionately known as The Conti. It closed in 2001 and became The Tube nightclub, which has also since closed.

Many nurses and frontline emergency services workers frequented The Conti and many say they experienced some of the best nights out of their lives.

The narrow staircase would lead down to the basement club, food would be served through a hatch and the queues to the toilets could be as long as your arm – they were pretty minging too.

Discotheque Royales

Built in 1845, the building was originally made to be an amphitheatre. But in 1921 it was changed into a cinema after facing stiff competition from the Palace Theatre and Opera House.

After being used as a bingo hall, the historic landmark then became one of Manchester’s most iconic nightclubs known by most as ‘Royales’, since 1989. In later years it went on to become Infinity and M-Two but Royales was legendary throughout the ‘90s.

Inside, it had many levels and a huge dance floor that was meant to look like it was lit up under a huge chandelier. With long draped velvet curtains, lights and reflective mirrors everywhere, it was party central.

DJ Brutus Gold held Love Train nights there until the show moved to the Ritz in 2000.

nightclub tour manchester

Fifth Avenue

This club started out as Legend, which  became known as Manchester’s ‘other club’ during the ‘80s and the height of the Hacienda era, and saw top DJs who also played nights at Wigan Pier.

When it became Fifth Ave it was transformed into an indie music haven. As revellers walked down into the dingy basement and the whiff of cheap bleach in the air would hit them in the face, some of the best tunes from Manchester bands would be blasting, as partygoers walked straight across the sticky floor to the bar where they’d order a drink served in a plastic cup.

Club-goers soon got to know that if you went up to request a song from the DJ, it wouldn’t get played. In later years, it became known simply as Fifth, after owners tried a bit of a refresh.

But as the pandemic hit, the club sat empty and shuttered, and sadly never to return as it closed for good in 2021.

nightclub tour manchester

Twisted Wheel Club

It quickly became a Manchester institution after opening in the ‘60s, attracting mods across the North looking for somewhere to dance all night to rhythm and blues.

Before Twisted Wheel, clubs would play mainstream popular music. This Manchester establishment was groundbreaking and paved the way for how nightclubs would play different music genres to suit various tastes in the future.

Twisted Wheel, based on Swan Street, was a legendary haven for Northern Soul enthusiasts. It closed for a while in 1971, being renamed Placemate 7, then Follies. The club closed for good in 2021.

Thunderdome

If the Hacienda was too pretentious for you, or you got turned away at the door, there was another legendary Madchester club playing all the great acid house music buzzing dancers wanted to rave the night away to – it was called the Thunderdome.

Located at 255 Oldham Road, this club was all about the music. It was edgier, full of all walks of life and was even home to some of Manchester’s criminal underworld. Many fondly referred to it as the ‘Dome.

Initially, although it felt a bit dangerous, nobody wanted any trouble, they just wanted to get off their trolley and enjoy the music. But over the years there were police raids and even helicopters circling the club as well as undercover officers wearing yellow smiley face T-shirts mingling in amongst the hooligans, gang members and just generally dodgy people.

Unfortunately, its rough reputation has stuck with it to this day, while the Hacienda is remembered most as the epicentre of the Madchester acid house scene. The Thunderdome was demolished in 2010 but its legend lives on in the memories of retired ravers and on tribute Facebook groups.

Here’s 30 nostalgic photographs of what Manchester looked like in the 1990s.

The city centre has changed a lot over the decades, which probably comes as no surprise with the amount of construction going on – it’s changing by the day.

But as the years go by and buildings you once knew are torn down and replaced with new apartments or office blocks, it’s left to your grainy memory of how places used to look and the times you may have once had there.

nightclub tour manchester

The nineties was a great era for music in Manchester and saw the birth of bands including Oasis, The Doves and Take That. It was the decade of hope after the recession of the 1980s, but there were ups and downs also.

On April 1st 1990 prisoners in Strangeways (now HMP Manchester) took control of its chapel, and quickly spread throughout most of the prison to begin a riot which lasted 25 days.

Hundreds of inmates got up onto the roof, with the incident claiming the life of one prisoner and injuring 147 prison officers and 47 prisoners.

The riot was followed by similar disturbances at other prisons across the country and sparked a conversation about reform for prison conditions.

nightclub tour manchester

The decade was also blighted by the IRA bomb of 1996. The Provisional Irish Republican Army detonated a 1,500-kilogram lorry bomb on Corporation Street on June 15th.

It was the biggest bomb detonated in Great Britain since the Second World War, injuring 212 innocent people and causing £700 million worth of damage to the city centre.

The event kick-started the regeneration and modernisation of the city which has evolved into the Manchester we know and love today.

nightclub tour manchester

The city already began planning on improvements as part of its campaign to hold the 2000 Olympics and Paralympics. However, the bid was ultimately unsuccessful and Manchester was beaten to it by Sydney, with Beijing coming in as runner-up.

But Manchester did go on to hold the 2002 Commonwealth Games, with The Commonwealth Games Stadium becoming the new home of Manchester City after the club vacated Maine Road – which was then demolished and turned into new homes.

The Hacienda, which opened in 1982, became the nightclub at the forefront of the acid house scene. The club was owned by record label Factory Records and was famous for playing a major part in the Madchester movement.

nightclub tour manchester

Unfortunately, the club gained a reputation for drug use and after enjoying its heyday throughout the best part of the ‘90s, it fell victim to crime issues and financial troubles which eventually led to its closure in 1997.

The club was subsequently demolished and replaced by apartments.

The newly built Trafford Centre opened in 1998, the year after the film Titanic was released, which its themed food court paid homage to. Since then, Trafford Park has transformed from the derelict marshlands it once was and into a centre of retail, leisure and entertainment.

Manchester United were the most successful football team of the city during this era, and the club won numerous domestic and international titles under manager Alex Ferguson.

David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes were just some of the players who played for United during the club’s golden era – playing in the newly formed Premier League, which was founded in 1992.

For the first time in English football history the Reds secured the Treble in 1999 – the League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Meanwhile, the Blue side of Manchester – Man City – went through many ups and downs. In 1998 City were relegated to the third tier of the English Football League. The club regained promotion to the top tier in 2001-02 and have remain in the Premier League since.

Manchester was once home to the iconic Strangeways Boddingtons Brewery, which owned pubs throughout the North West.

The brand was best known for its ‘Boddies’ – a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head.

In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester’s profile. Model and actress Melanie Sykes was the Boddington’s girl star of the ads, which saw her take a swig of a pint and say ‘by ‘eck’, with a creamy moustache.

The brewery shut down in February 2005 and its workers clocked off their final ever shift, never to return, following its 227-year history.

Girls Aloud 2024 tour dates and how you can still get tickets

Following their appearance on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Live, Girls Aloud will be heading on tour next month - and there's still some tickets available

Girls Aloud will perform across the UK and Ireland in 2024

It’s not long until Girls Aloud kick off their eagerly-awaited tour and fans will get their first glimpse of what could be in store for The Girls Aloud Show this evening.

In what has been billed as a rare television appearance for the four-piece, the girl band are appearing on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway this evening (April 13) on ITV as part of the series finale ‘extravaganza’.

Their appearance comes just a little over a month before they kick off their 2024 tour - which will be their first tour in 11 years and their first since the untimely passing of member Sarah Harding, who passed away in 2021.

Announced earlier this year, Nadine, Cheryl, Nicola and Kimberley said The Girls Aloud Tour will be a ‘celebration’ to mark the 21st anniversary since they were voted the winners on ITV’s Popstars: The Rivals.

The huge 30-date arena tour will kick off at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland on May 17 and will then head around the UK and Ireland before finishing up in Liverpool on June 30. In-between then, they'll be heading to the likes of Belfast, Cardiff, Newcastle, Glasgow, Leeds and, of course, Manchester - where they will be performing three huge nights at the AO Arena ( tickets here ).

The Girls Aloud Show will be the girl band's first tour in 11 years and their first without member Sarah

Fans will be hoping the band’s biggest hits, including Sound of the Underground, The Promise and Call The Shots, will be amongst the tour’s setlist, alongside some lesser-known favourites and album tracks.

And if you still haven’t got yourself a ticket, then we’ve got you covered. Here’s all the details you’ll need if you want to secure some last-minute seats to The Girls Aloud Show 2024.

Are tickets still available?

A number of the dates were added following such a huge demand for tickets therefore some of the original dates are now sold out. But, you’ll be pleased to know, there are still some tickets available for a few of the dates.

Ticketmaster reports 'low availability' for the May 23 , May 24 and May 25 dates at the AO Arena, but there are still some resale tickets available for each night. In most cases, you will have to pay above the original ticket price if you want to buy resale tickets.

General tickets are still available to buy from Ticketmaster for the May 25 show, as well as VIP and hospitality packages .

A limited number of tickets are also available for the other dates too via Ticketmaster.

How much are tickets?

There are a series of ticket prices and they will all vary based on location and whether you are buying resale tickets, or directly from ticket providers.

At the time of writing, the lowest priced tickets for the May 25 show at Manchester’s AO Arena were available for £58.75 each on Ticketmaster before booking fees. There are also tickets priced at £71.75, whilst official platinum tickets will cost a lot more - with prices starting from £172.60. Resale tickets are also available at various price points.

Hospitality tickets start from £167.75 each before fees. The lowest price package included VIP entry, access to The Mezz for pre-drinks, panoramic views of the stage, cloakroom access and a dedicated host service. Higher VIP packages are also available.

2024 Premier League - Night 12 preview

Michael van Gerwen (Kelly Deckers/PDC)

Home hero Michael van Gerwen will take on World Champion Luke Humphries when the 2024 Premier League roadshow rolls into Rotterdam on Thursday. Night 12 of the darting extravaganza will see quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final played over the best of 11 legs at Rotterdam Ahoy, as Van Gerwen prepares to take centre stage in front of a sell-out Dutch crowd. Following a stuttering run of form, the Dutch number one returned to winning ways in Birmingham last week, defeating Luke Littler in the Night 11 showpiece to reignite his Play-Off push. Van Gerwen is now bidding to become the first player to claim five nightly wins in a single season since the current format was introduced, and he’s determined to make history on home soil.

"It's always fantastic to play in your home country," admitted Van Gerwen, who lifted the Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch back in January.

"It also gives added pressure because you want to perform, but I think after last week I've put myself in a good position again.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game. I always knew that Luke [Humphries] was capable of doing what he's doing at the moment, so fair play to him.

"I think he has done really well for himself over the last eight or nine months. He is a grafter and he works hard for what he wants to achieve, and you can only admire that.

"It would be magic if I could win here in Rotterdam. With the new [nightly] format I haven't done too well over here yet, so I hope I change that tomorrow." In the evening’s opener, league leader Littler will face 2023 World Champion Michael Smith, as he bids to extend his cushion at the Premier League summit. Littler moved two points clear of second-placed Humphries after edging out the world number one in a captivating Night 11 semi-final, before his eight-match winning run was halted by Van Gerwen. Smith, meanwhile, closed to within a point of fourth-placed Nathan Aspinall with a quarter-final win over Gerwyn Price in Birmingham, closing out a 6-3 victory with a 104.45 average – his highest of the season. The St Helens star has won three of his four meetings against Littler in this year’s Premier League, although the Warrington wonderkid is in relaxed mood ahead of his Rotterdam debut. "The bigger the arena, the better I play, so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night,"  insisted the 17-year-old, a nightly winner in Belfast and Manchester this season.

"The first five or six weeks were tough, but I think I've really settled into the tournament now.

"Coming into the Premier League, I thought if I made the O2 for Finals Night that would be a massive achievement, so to be top of the league after 11 nights is just a bonus.

"Michael [Smith] won't put too much pressure on himself but he knows he needs to win to keep up with the top four, and I just want to keep going." Elsewhere, Rob Cross will aim to snap his six-match losing streak when he meets 2023 runner-up Price, with both men vying to preserve their Play-Off aspirations. Cross has slipped to sixth in the table having failed to register victory since Night Six, while Price is a point adrift in seventh, despite boasting a 99.79 tournament average – a statistic only bettered by Humphries. However, Cross has won the pair’s last two meetings by an aggregate scoreline of 13-4, which included a 6-1 demolition on Night Five, where he averaged in excess of 109. The evening’s other quarter-final clash will see Aspinall play Peter Wright, with Van Gerwen or Humphries awaiting the winner in the semi-finals. Aspinall celebrated a landmark victory in Rotterdam 12 months ago, and the World Matchplay champion will aim to repeat the feat on his return, having featured in four of the last eight nightly finals. The Stockport star has also won both encounters against Wright in this year’s Premier League, with the Scot marooned at the foot of the table with four points to his name. The 2024 BetMGM Premier League will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK & Ireland, through the PDC's worldwide broadcast partners including DAZN and Viaplay, and on PDCTV for Rest of the World Subscribers. 2024 Premier League Night 12 - Rotterdam Ahoy Thursday April 18 Quarter-Finals Michael Smith v Luke Littler Rob Cross v Gerwyn Price Peter Wright v Nathan Aspinall Michael van Gerwen v Luke Humphries Semi-Finals Smith/Littler v Cross/Price Wright/Aspinall v Van Gerwen/Humphries Final Smith/Littler/Cross/Price v Wright/Aspinall/Van Gerwen/Humphries

Real Madrid ‘studied Arsenal tactics’ to help eliminate Manchester City from Champions League

Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid celebrates with team mates after the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg match between Manchester City and Real Madrid CF at Etihad Stadium

Real Madrid’s coaching staff used Arsenal ’s blueprint to help eliminate Manchester City from the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

After a 3-3 draw in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu last week, Madrid produced a solid defensive display in the return fixture at the Etihad Stadium and following a 1-1 draw plus extra time, Carlo Ancelotti’s side beat City on penalties to set up a Champions League semi-final tie against Bayern Munich .

Arsenal, meanwhile, crashed out of Europe as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Bayern at the Allianz Arena .

However, in preparation for their second leg against City this week, Madrid’s backroom team used Arsenal as their inspiration to help nullify the threat posed by Pep Guardiola’s side.

According to Marca , Madrid’s assistant coach, Davide Ancelotti, who is Carlo’s son, was responsible for providing pre-match analysis of City and identifying potential solutions for the team’s visit to the Etihad.

The report claims that Davide Ancelotti used Arsenal’s goalless draw against City on March 31 as a major reference point, with Federico Valverde, Dani Carvajal, Vinicius Junior, Nacho, Ferland Mendy and even Jude Bellingham given similar defensive instructions to the ones Arsenal’s players carried out at the Etihad last month.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland speaks with Arsenal's Declan Rice and Gabriel following the Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium

Asked if he was surprised by Madrid’s defensive approach, Guardiola said after the game: ‘I don’t judge.

‘We’ve found that type of opponent in the past. Some teams are more open, some play a lower block. They know it’s a difficult ground to come to and they’ve tried. We really pushed them, particularly in the second half.

‘We were on the edge of the box and had lots of shots from outside the area, but we weren’t able to achieve it. We did everything we could but in the end Madrid go through and we don’t.’

However, City midfielder Rodri was more scathing of Madrid’s tactics at the Etihad .

‘To be honest, I’ve only seen one team today,’ Rodri said.

‘We know how tough beating Madrid is, but in my opinion we should have gone through. In the end this is football.

‘We knew the game was going to be long for them, but we didn’t expect that they were going to be so, so far deep [in their half].

‘It is difficult to analyse. We had the feeling that penalties were more convenient for them. It was their turn [to progress] again.

Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid holds off a challenge from Rodri, Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City during the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg match between Manchester City and Real Madrid CF at Etihad Stadium

‘In the penalties, luck was on Madrid’s side, as usual. Real Madrid have these things, they can win a game in which they barely left their own box.

‘We know what we do and we know that this competition does not understand merits, it understands who puts the ball in the back of the net.

‘Their only shot on target they had went in, and we were trailing for most of the game. We have had chances and if we had been more clinical, we would have won the game.

‘In the end this is football. When you have given everything you have no regrets. Now it’s time to lift the boys up and congratulate Real Madrid.’

The Duchess of Sussex seems to be soft-launching the first product from her upcoming lifestyle brand.

Influencers and friends of Meghan have been posting pictures of American Riviera Orchard's debut item - strawberry jam - in recent days.

Parenting campaigner Kelly McKee Zajfen has become the latest to promote the jar, posting an image of it in a basket of lemons and flowers on Instagram.

The Duchess reportedly sent out 50 jam jars to online influencers.

Los Angeles-based fashion designer Tracy Robbins shared a photo of a jar - marked 17 out of 50 - earlier this week.

Megan has already launched the American Riviera Orchard website, but it does not feature any products and simply invites visitors to join a waiting list.

An Instagram profile has also been set up for the business, but just features several posts making up its gold logo.

Barristers and judges have the biggest gender pay gap in the UK, a study has shown.

Women in the profession earn just over 29% less than their male counterparts - around £8.31 an hour.

That's according to ONS data analysed by Claims.co.uk.

Financial managers and directors were found to have the second-biggest difference, with women paid approximately £11.56 less an hour than men in the same occupation.

"Perhaps in 2024, studies like this will raise awareness of the gender pay gap and precipitate change in these industries, starting with pay reviews," Claims.co.uk said.

As the season for high pollen count is upon us, anyone who suffers from hay fever will be thinking about stocking up on their medication.

But this can mean the pocket takes a hit.

Branded tablets from pharmacies can set buyers back quite a bit, with Clarityn allergy relief costing £10.99 for 30 tablets . Piriteze is another common brand, priced at  £11.55 for 30 tablets .

But most of these medications have identical properties, regardless of brand.

It's important to look out for the "active" ingredients - and then buy the cheapest option.

These include loratadine and cetirizine hydrochloride.

Supermarkets and discount stores can provide cheaper alternatives to the brand names.

Poundstretcher, for example, sells 30 loratadine tablets for 79p.

Supermarkets will often sell the branded versions alongside their own cheaper equivalents - so compare the ingredients before deciding which to go for.

Here are some examples:

  • Asda: £2.50 for cheapest generic v £6.50 for cheapest Clarityn tablets
  • Boots: £5.99 for cheapest generic v £11.55 for Piriteze, Zirtek or branded equivalent
  • Boots: £2.75 for cheapest generic v £10.99 for Clarityn tablets
  • Sainsbury’s: £2.50 for cheapest generic v £11.10 for Clarityn tablets
  • Tesco: £2.95 for cheapest generic v £11 for Piriteze, Zirtek or branded equivalent
  • Waitrose: £3.25 for cheapest generic v £11.85 for Clarityn tablets

There are no cheaper equivalent options for Benadryl tablets, but Amazon offers cheaper deals of £7.20 or £6.48 with Prime vs a standard price of around £10 from supermarkets.

Remember, certain options could seem cheaper, such as an option of 90p for 10 tablets vs £1 for 10 one-a-day tablets.

However, you'll need to keep taking the first option throughout the day, with the second option lasting you much longer.

You should only buy medications from legitimate pharmacies and shops, as they must adhere to certain standards and inspections.

If you had a great meal out, you'd probably leave a tip. Why don't you tip the people that make your video games too?

That's the suggestion from former game studio president Mike Ybarra. He sparked a debate on X when he posted the idea he'd been thinking about "for a while".

"When I beat a game, there are some that just leave me in awe of how amazing the experience was.

"I've often thought 'I wish I could give these folks another $10 or $20' because it was worth more than my initial $70 and they didn't try to nickel and dime me every second," he posted.

His idea was a flop.

A lot of the more than 1,700 replies asked why games studios didn't just pay their developers properly, at a time when the industry is in crisis.

"Maybe it's time companies start giving salaries and a bonus structure adequate to all their employees," posted @leqvist.

Game developers are facing mass redundancies. ( You can read more about that here .)

In the Past two years, more than 19,000 people have lost their jobs and just four months into 2024, another 8,000 have gone.

Only yesterday, an estimated 600 redundancies were announced by Grand Theft Auto-6 publisher Take-Two, which could include jobs at Scotland’s Rockstar Games UK.

The other criticism that cropped up a lot was that games are pretty expensive anyway and should just be… good?

"A horrible idea. The game should be an amazing experience for $70! Paying extra for a 'great game' means that you are settling for a **** or mediocre game normally," posted @LinuxMostly.

The average price for a boxed video game in the UK is now £35.70, according to the Entertainment and Retail Association yearbook.

After posting his idea, Mr Ybarra clearly went about his life, posting afterwards: "Whoever runs SteamDB [a database of everything on Steam], I tip my hat to you."

"Maybe you should tip them," came the reply.

Crisis-hit Boeing has rushed to defend itself from fresh whistleblower allegations of poor practice as the airline grapples its latest safety crisis.

A Congressional investigation heard evidence yesterday on the safety culture and manufacturing standards at the company - rocked in January by a mid-air scare that saw an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 flight suffer a panel blowout.

One Boeing quality engineer, Sam Salehpour, told members of a Senate subcommittee that Boeing was taking shortcuts to bolster production levels that could lead to jetliners breaking apart.

Almost one million private renters in England have been handed no-fault evictions since the Conservative government promised to abolish them, new data has shown.

Research by YouGov on behalf of homelessness charity Shelter - and shared exclusively with Sky News - showed that since April 2019 943,000 people had been given Section 21 notices, the equivalent of more than 500 renters every day.

The figures also showed unwanted moves were costing private renters in England £550m a year, with 830,000 people having to move in the past 12 months alone due to either their fixed tenancies coming to an end, being priced out by rent increases or being served with a Section 21.

The Co-operative Bank will this week move a step closer to regaining its mutual status when it announces that it has struck a £780m deal to be bought by the Coventry Building Society.

Sky News has learnt that the two organisations are expected to announce as early as today that they have reached agreement on the terms of a transaction.

Insiders said the cash price to be paid by the Coventry would be close to £800m.

The 10 cheapest European summer holidays have been revealed, with some "surprising" destinations making the list.

Which? compiled the list after analysing more than 4,500 package holidays.

The consumer group found the least expensive were often in locations that people "assume come with a higher price tag", such as Italy's Amalfi Coast or Greek islands.

Interestingly, traditionally low-cost destinations such as Bulgaria and Turkey failed to make the top 10.

Which? said this was partly because of the type of packages available, with the Amalfi Coast having a wide choice of accommodation on either a self-catering or bed and breakfast basis, which is usually cheaper than full board packages.

These are the 10 cheapest package holidays for seven nights during the first week of August:

Petrol prices could go well above 150p a litre, the RAC has warned, as data shows it has already risen by nearly 8p this year.

The price at the pump has hit a five-month high of 148.5p, according to government figures.

It was 140.8p at the start of the year.

During this week alone, the cost has gone up by 1.6p - there has not been a sharper weekly rise since August 2023.

Average pump prices for diesel have also increased to 157.5p, the highest since November 2023.

"This year is proving to be another tough one for drivers," RAC fuel price spokesperson Simon Williams said.

"Both petrol and diesel are now the most expensive they've been since November last year, which is bad for households, businesses and the economy, especially as we know there is a close link between fuel prices and inflation.

"With increased tensions in the Middle East, the cost of oil is only likely to go up, which could push petrol well above 150p a litre."

This was echoed by AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet, who said pump prices were climbing towards the point "drivers fear".

"It is a psychological shock that shouts out from the price boards each time motorists drive past," he said.

"The early part of the summer could be a tough time for UK motorists."

Mr Williams also explained that while diesel is edging towards 160p, that is due to retailers taking much bigger margins.

"There's only been a few pence between the wholesale prices of both fuels since mid-March," he added.

"We find it hard to believe that a margin of 13p a litre on diesel - compared to the long-term average of 8p - is fair.

"This surely won't go unnoticed by the Competition and Markets Authority, which only two weeks ago expressed its concern about higher retailer margins."

Virgin Media has topped the rankings of the most complained-about broadband, landline and pay-TV providers, Ofcom figures show.

The regulator said Virgin Media received the most complaints between October and December last year.

The company received 20 complaints per 100,000 broadband customers in the three-month period.

But this was an improvement on the 32 per 100,000 in the previous quarter.

Complaints handling was the cause of 43% of customer complaints, compared with an industry average of 32%.

Some 22% of its complaints were about faults, service and provisioning, well below the industry average of 37%.

It was slightly ahead of Now Broadband, which received 18 complaints per 100,000, but lagged behind the industry average of 12.

Sky, Sky News' parent company, came in with the fewest complaints at five per 100,000 customers.

Virgin Media complaints for landline came in at 13 per 100,000, just ahead of Shell Energy and Now Broadband.

It also received 13 complaints per 100,000 for pay-TV, almost double that of BT.

A Virgin Media O2 spokesman said: "We're committed to providing an excellent service to our customers, and while overall these complaints represent a very small proportion of our customer base, we acknowledge there is a need for improvement, which is under way, and we're focused on getting this right.

"We are investing heavily and making changes across our business to deliver tangible improvements, for example through multi-skilling our teams and rolling out new IT platforms that will make it easier for customers to get support when they need it, and empowering our people to resolve any issues quickly and effectively first time."

The FTSE 100 has recovered a bit more ground in early dealing after Tuesday's sharp losses.

The index opened 0.4% higher at 7,880, building on a 0.4% gain yesterday.

The Tuesday rout, on fears of US interest rates remaining higher for longer, saw more than 1.8% of its value lost.

While the issue remains a concern for investors, miners have dug the FTSE's way to recovery.

Among other sectors making strides were airline and holiday stocks. That was after easyJet reported strong summer bookings and an easing of first-half losses.

The no-frills carrier, which makes all its profits in the six months to the end of September, said it expected to be among the fastest growing European airlines. Shares took off by 4.5%.

Deliveroo stock also gained, by 2.3%, after it returned to order growth in the first three months of the year.

One deal making waves is a takeover of troubled British music investor Hipgnosis Songs Fund. The FTSE 250 firm, which has a catalogue including rights to work by artists including Shakira, Ed Sheeran, Blondie and Red Hot Chili Peppers, is set to be bought by Concord Chorus. Under the terms of the deal, shareholders of Hipgnosis will get $1.16 per share in cash, valuing the company at $1.4bn (£1.1bn).

The price, musical and theatrical rights holder Concord said, represented a 30% premium on the recent value of Hipgnosis shares.

Hipgnosis has been mired by troubles since mid-last year, including valuation concerns, board and legal battles, and a shareholder revolt against a catalogue sale deal that forced a strategic review.
