The Truth About Obstructed View Cabins – (Photo Examples & How to Find One)

If you’re considering booking a cruise, you might be looking for a way to reduce the cost of your cabin without reducing the cabin category grade.

On most cruise ships, there are some cabins that you can book for a reduced price, but the cruise lines rarely advertise them. These are called “Obstructed View” cabins.

What is an Obstructed View Cabin?

As the name suggests, an obstructed view cabin is a cabin where an item is obstructing the view from either the window or the balcony.

Obstructions can vary from a very slight obstruction down in one corner – to a lifeboat hanging in front of your cabin, obscuring the view completely!

Common obstructions include lifeboats, machinery, and pieces of other decks.

A lot of people run and hide when they hear the phrase “Obstructed View.” If you’re one of those people – I don’t blame you, but it can be a brilliant way to save a lot of money and is well worth considering .

Obstructed view balcony cabin

When I recently sailed from Singapore to Tokyo onboard the Spectrum of the Seas, I chose an obstructed view balcony cabin.

This was because I wanted to be able to see the wonderful views and the interesting ports from my cabin – but the trip was so expensive, I was looking to save some money if possible.

This obstructed-view balcony cabin seemed the perfect compromise. I still had the views – but at a reduced price. (I did have to stand up to see the views though – but that isn’t a problem for me.)

What Are The Benefits of Booking an Obstructed View Cabin?

Obstructed view cabins can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars cheaper than similar cabins without an obstruction.

Obstructed view cabins often have good locations and booking an obstructed view cabin means that you could possibly afford a cabin grade that you wouldn’t be able to have otherwise.

If you’re somebody who’s used to cruising staying in inside cabins, having an obstructed view ocean view or a balcony can be a real treat.

If The Obstruction Is A Lifeboat, You May Have Days When It Isn’t There!

When I took my latest Asia cruise, the lifeboat outside my room was taken down and used as a Tender Boat when we visited some ports.

On those days, I had a much better view, only the davits (Lifeboat brackets) were left in view.

What Could Be Obstructing an Obstructed View Cabin?

Common obstructions for obstructed-view cabins include lifeboats, machinery, other decks, and even on occasion, things such as crew walkways or whirlpools.

The obstruction may not be directly in front of the window or balcony.

  • Promenade Deck/Walkway
  • Whirlpools/Waterslides
  • A Deck below or above

Having something small such as a crew walkway between the window and the edge of the ship is enough of an obstruction that that cabin usually will not be sold at full price and will be marked as “obstructed.”

Many thanks to Xavier for the pictures above of his obstructed view cabin. He sailed with NCL and was upgraded from an inside cabin to an obstructed ocean view.

Why do Cruise Lines Sell Cabins That Aren’t Very Obstructed as ‘Obstructed View’?

There are obstructed view cabins on most cruise ships and cruise lines tend to be very careful when it comes to selling obstructed views.

The Cruise Line would rather sell a cabin as an “obstructed view” than sell it as a standard cabin and risk the passenger making a complaint about the lack of a view.

They don’t want to have to deal with that problem!

Cruise lines definitely err on the side of caution, and they call lots of things “obstructed” when really I don’t think they are.

There are some cabins onboard P&O’s newest ships Iona and Arvia are separated from the ocean by a promenade deck.

These aren’t classed as “Obstructed View” and are charged at full price. There could be hot tubs, sunbeds – and lots and lots of people between you and your view of the ocean!

Find out what I liked, and what I didn’t like about that cabin in the video below:

What Type of Obstructed View Cabins Are Available?

Obstructed ocean views.

When it comes to obstructed cabins, the cheapest cabin you can get is an obstructed ocean view, and these are usually the same price as an inside cabin.

If you’re used to cruising in an inside cabin, you’ll know when you wake up, it’s pitch black. You don’t know if it’s 3:00 AM or 3:00 PM – whether the sun is shining or if it’s pouring with rain!

If you’re able to get an obstructed ocean view, you at least have some daylight.

Even if you have a full lifeboat that covers the entire window, you won’t have to worry about waking up in the dark.

If the cabin is at the same price as an inside cabin – or even a little bit more, I would definitely pay extra just for the daylight.

If you do have an inside cabin, my favourite cabin hack is to pack a Sunrise Alarm Clock.

Unlike a conventional alarm clock, a sunrise clock slowly wakes you by lighting up the room gently. You can have optional sounds – like birds tweeting – it’s a far more relaxing way to wake up.

Obstructed Balcony

Obstructed balcony cabins are a great option for people who usually stay in inside cabins or ocean-view cabins.

Even if your balcony is completely obstructed, being able to get some fresh air/daylight is really nice.

I personally wouldn’t pay much more than an ocean view price for an obstructed view balcony – but it can be worth it in some circumstances.

Obstructed View Cabin Examples

The amount of obstruction within an ocean view or a balcony cabin can vary dramatically.

If you have a look here at the MSC Preziosa, you can see this deck where the windows are behind the lifeboats.

The windows on the top level look out over the lifeboats but are still considered obstructed because compared to standard ocean views, the view is limited.

The below cabin is an example of an obstructed view oceanview, where the view really isn’t very obstructed at all.

The problem with the cabin below is that guests are able to walk in this area, so may be able to see into your cabin.

That said, if a cabin like this is available for the price of an inside cabin, I think you’d be mad not to take it. ..

obstructed view oceanview cabin example

Some obstructed-view cabins really are obstructed – such as the one above. In this situation, the cabin window is being used just to get some daylight, you can’t see any outside view at all.

Obstructed View Cabins Often Have Good Locations

Another benefit above and beyond just the cost-saving aspect of getting an obstructed view cabin, the obstructed view cabins often have good locations.

Many are right behind the lifeboats, so a lot of them are right in the middle of the ship.

Some people care more about the location than they do the view from the balcony.

If you’re somebody who likes to be in the middle of the ship for seasickness reasons, getting an obstructed view in the middle can be a really good way to get that location that you want, but without paying the premium price.

How Do You Find an Obstructed View Cabin?

It can be tricky to find the right obstructed view cabin. The more research you do into the cabins, the better experience you’re going to have.

If you’re booking through an agent, let them know that you are open to obstructed-view cabins.

Then they can have a look at the deck plans and you can chat about how obstructed you would like the cabin to be.

That is exactly what I did when I booked my Obstructed Balcony cabin. To find out what I thought of the cabin I was assigned below:

If you’re somebody who really is into researching your cruises, look at deck plans. You can find out how obstructed each cabin is and find out which ones you’d be happy with.

If you’re booking directly through the cruise line or through travel agents, you can see deck plans where you can see which cabins are obstructed view.

how to find obstructed view cabins on a cruise

Once you have a cabin in mind, it’s usually a good idea to do a quick web search of the cabin. For a lot of cabins, you’ll find photos from other cruisers.

A friend of mine saved almost $1,000 by switching from a regular balcony to an obstructed view balcony. Her balcony wasn’t one of those where you couldn’t see anything, there was just a deck that stuck out BELOW her cabin!

Can a Cruise Line Assign You an Obstructed View Cabin Without You Booking One?

No. It’s important to note that the only way that you’re going to get an obstructed view cabin, is if you book one.

The cruise line can’t assign you an obstructed view cabin if you booked a regular cabin.

Unless you’ve specifically said you would be happy with an obstructed-view cabin, you’re not going to get assigned one.

Obstructed View Cruise Cabins – What to Know

Tips for booking obstructed view cabins on your next cruise.

Savvy cruise shoppers have always known what a great value an obstructed view cabin can be. But for newer cruisers who aren’t familiar with the good and the bad of an obstructed-view cruise cabin option, we’re here to let you know what to look for and what to expect!

what IS an obstructed view cruise cabin / stateroom?

Any objects that may even MINIMALLY alter a fully open view from a porthole window or balcony will be considered obstructed. The object may be as simple as a piece of window washing equipment barely in sight or as extreme as a fully obstructed view by a lifeboat. Researching the specific cabin is key to getting the best bang for your obstructed buck!

In short, what is considered an obstructed view can vary tremendously, but USUALLY isn’t a fully blocked view. For example, the most common reason a cabin is considered an obstructed view cabin is being able to see the roof of a lifeboat when standing at the edge of a balcony. So it’s not really blocking a view out, but the lifeboat blocks a few DOWN to the ocean. If you’re sitting on the balcony, you’ll likely never be bothered by it.

The good about obstructed view cabins & Staterooms

The most popular reason people choose obstructed-view cabins is the discounted price. This is one of our favorite tips for saving money when booking a cruise! Sometimes you can book a balcony obstructed view stateroom for the price of a regular inside stateroom or ocean view stateroom. For people on a budget who want outdoor space, this is a great option!

The other great thing about these cabins is they’re often not fully obstructed. The cruise lines will offer discounted partial obstructed view cabins that have almost no obstructions, but they know they have to discount these and disclose even a minimal obstruction to avoid complaints.

One perk of the obstructed view cabins is they are often in the best locations on a ship. Because most of the obstructions come from lifeboats, the cabins are usually in a central area of the ship, one of the most desirable locations.

The bad about obstructed view cabins

Sometimes these staterooms can, in fact, be FULLY obstructed by equipment or lifeboats. Additionally, the discounts may not be enough to make the obstruction worth it.

For example, this ocean-view cabin has a window that is fully blocked by a lifeboat. While you might get some natural light anyway, the question would be how good of a value is this versus an inside cabin:

Obstructed View Cruise Cabins - What to Know 1

Cruise lines have been less willing to discount some rooms as ships sail at a fuller capacity. So discounting isn’t as aggressive as it once was for these cabin types.

Is an obstructed view cruise cabin worth it?

Oftentimes, yes! Especially balcony cabins that can be hundreds or even thousands less expensive than a similar cabin without an obstruction.

It’s important to check the location of the cabin you are considering booking. Usually, a travel agent will have the best information, but you can research on your own by going to Cruise Deck Plans and looking at the specific stateroom.

Here are some great pics of what to expect when booking an obstructed-view cruise cabin:

Obstructed View Cruise Cabins - What to Know 2

When to avoid an obstructed view stateroom

In general, we advise avoiding obstructed cabins when you cannot specifically choose the stateroom . So when you book a cruise with an obstructed view and the option is (GTY), meaning, “guarantee” – that means the cruise line will assign the cabin and you have no ability to research just how obstructed a specific cabin is.

Additionally, obstructed-view ocean-view cabins are generally not worth the small discount. There is such a limited amount of view and light that comes into an oceanview stateroom that saving a few dollars on one of these already (relatively) inexpensive cabins isn’t worth the obstruction. In this case, be safe and go with an ocean-view stateroom without anything blocking the view!

Obstructed View on Cruise Ship — What to Know about This Cabin Feature

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud

https://starryjourneyer.com/obstructed-view-on-cruise-ship/

When considering an obstructed view cabin on a cruise ship, many passengers may underestimate its value. However, this cabin category hides a silver lining that can positively impact your budget.

While the scenic beauty of a cruise is highly cherished by many, budget constraints can make cabins with stunning ocean views seem out of reach. If you’re planning to book a cruise, finding ways to reduce cabin expenses without compromising on quality is crucial.

Despite not being widely advertised by cruise lines, discounted accommodations known as obstructed view cabins are available on most vessels. These cabins provide significant cost savings and deserve careful consideration.

Understanding Obstructed View Cabins

Obstructed view cabins are staterooms where the view from the window or balcony is partially or fully blocked by the ship's lifeboats, structures, or deck overhangs.

These cabins are offered at a lower price point than their unobstructed counterparts, thus providing a budget-friendly option for travelers who still wish to enjoy natural light and occasional glimpses of the ocean or ports.

The Appeal of Obstructed View Cabins

The main allure of these obstructed view cabins lies in their exceptional value. Priced slightly higher than interior cabins but lower than standard oceanview or balcony cabins, they offer a balance between cost and comfort.

These cabins serve as a compromise for those desiring a window or balcony without the premium price tag associated with clear, unobstructed views.

Choosing Based on Your Cruising Style

Your cabin choice should align with how you envision spending time on your cruise. If you plan to use the room mainly for sleeping and changing, opting for an obstructed view cabin can lead to significant savings that could be redirected toward excursions, dining, or onboard experiences.

However, if you dream of relaxing in your cabin while gazing at the sea, the obstruction might detract from your enjoyment.

Making an Informed Decision

Choosing the right cabin is a significant part of investing in your cruise experience. When considering an obstructed view cabin, it’s essential to:

  • Research and Compare: Look at deck plans and photos to understand the extent of the obstruction in different cabins.
  • Assess Your Priorities : Determine if the savings justify the potential trade-offs, based on how much time you plan to spend in your cabin.
  • Consult Professionals : A travel agent or cruise expert can offer valuable insights and help navigate your options based on your preferences and budget.

Definition of an Obstructed View on a Cruise Ship

An obstructed view on a cruise ship is when your window offers a tantalizing glimpse of the sparkling ocean, but is partially blocked by a pesky lifeboat or some other annoying obstruction. Understanding the pros and cons of an obstructed view is crucial when selecting a cabin category.

On the positive side, cabins with obstructed views are often priced lower than those with unobstructed views, making them a more affordable option for budget-conscious travelers. Additionally, these cabins can still provide natural light and fresh air, creating a pleasant atmosphere.

However, it’s important to consider the potential drawbacks. The obstruction can limit the view and natural light, creating a less immersive experience. It’s essential to weigh these factors and consider your priorities when choosing between an obstructed or unobstructed view.

Understanding the pros and cons of an obstructed view sets the stage for making an informed decision about your cruise experience.

Understand the Pros and Cons of an Obstructed View

Understanding the pros and cons of an obstructed view is important when considering a cruise. On the positive side, obstructed views are often cheaper than unobstructed ones, allowing you to save money while still enjoying the cruise. Some people also appreciate the element of surprise that comes with not knowing what they will see when they look out their window. On the downside, obstructed views can limit the amount of natural light that enters the cabin, making it feel darker and potentially claustrophobic. However, there are ways to improve obstructed views, such as choosing a higher deck or booking a cabin with a larger window. Exploring the different types of obstructions will help you make an informed decision.

Different Types of Obstructions

Get ready to discover the various obstacles that can obstruct your perfect window scenery on a cruise.

There are different types of obstructions that can hinder your view, such as lifeboats, tender boats, and maintenance equipment. These obstructions are typically located outside your cabin window and can partially or fully block your view of the ocean or ports of call.

Dealing with obstructions can be a trade-off, as obstructed view cabins are often priced lower than those with unobstructed views. However, it’s important to consider your preferences and priorities when choosing a cabin.

Now that you understand the different types of obstructions, let’s move on to the next section and learn how to determine if your cabin has an obstructed view.

How to Determine if Your Cabin Has an Obstructed View

When determining if my cabin has an obstructed view, I begin by researching different cabin categories. By understanding the various categories, I can identify which ones are more likely to have obstructed views.

Next, I examine deck plans to see if there are any potential obstructions, such as lifeboats or other structures, that may obstruct my view.

Additionally, I look at photos of the cabin and surrounding areas to get a visual representation of the potential view from my cabin.

By conducting thorough research and utilizing deck plans and photos, I can confidently determine if my cabin has an obstructed view or not.

Researching Cabin Categories

Discover the various cabin categories on a cruise ship and find out which ones offer obstructed views.

Understanding cruise ship cabin categories is essential when comparing different cabin options. Cruise lines offer a range of cabin categories, including interior, oceanview, balcony, and suite.

An interior cabin is the most affordable option, but it does not offer any windows or natural light.

Oceanview cabins provide a window or porthole with a view of the ocean.

Balcony cabins have a private outdoor space, allowing passengers to enjoy fresh air and scenic views.

Finally, suites offer spacious accommodations with additional amenities like separate living areas and private balconies.

When researching cabin categories, it is crucial to consider which ones may have obstructed views due to lifeboats or other obstructions. By examining deck plans and photos, you can determine which cabins offer unobstructed views of the ocean.

Examining Deck Plans and Photos

Take a moment to carefully examine the deck plans and photos to gain insight into the layout and design of the cabins on the cruise ship. This step is crucial when researching amenities and comparing prices.

Deck plans provide a detailed overview of each deck, allowing you to see the location of the cabins in relation to other areas of the ship. By studying these plans, you can determine if a cabin is situated near noisy areas like elevators or bars, or if it offers convenient access to amenities such as the pool or dining areas.

Additionally, photos of the cabins give you a visual representation of the size and decor, helping you envision yourself in the space. Understanding the cabin layout and design is essential to ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience.

Next, we will explore some tips for choosing the right cabin with a view.

Tips for Choosing the Right Cabin with a View

To ensure you make the most of your cruise experience, it’s important to consider the cabin’s location and view when selecting the perfect one for you. Researching cabin locations is crucial in finding the best view on a cruise ship. Here are some benefits of choosing a cabin with a view:

  • Breathtaking scenery: Waking up to a stunning sunrise or enjoying a picturesque sunset from your cabin can create unforgettable memories.
  • Sense of connection: Having a window or balcony allows you to feel more connected to the ocean, making you feel like you’re truly on a cruise.
  • Natural light: A cabin with a view lets in plenty of natural light, making the space feel more open and inviting.
  • Relaxation and serenity: Watching the waves or simply gazing at the vast sea can be incredibly calming and peaceful.
  • Enhanced ambiance: A cabin with a view can add a touch of luxury and sophistication to your cruise experience.

Considering these benefits, choosing a cabin with a view can greatly enhance your overall cruise enjoyment.

In the next section, we will explore strategies for enhancing an obstructed view.

Strategies for Enhancing an Obstructed View

When it comes to enhancing an obstructed view in a cruise ship cabin, there are a few strategies that I’ve found to be effective.

One of these strategies is utilizing mirrors and optimal seating. By strategically placing mirrors in the cabin, I’m able to create the illusion of a larger and more open space, while also directing the view towards the desired scenery.

Finding the optimal seating position is another helpful strategy. By positioning chairs or loungers in a way that maximizes the view, I can greatly enhance the overall experience.

Another strategy that I’ve found helpful is making the most of the balcony space. By adding plants, outdoor furniture, and even a small table, I’m able to create a cozy and inviting outdoor area to enjoy the view.

Utilizing Mirrors and Optimal Seating

Sit down in a strategically placed seat that allows you to enjoy the stunning ocean views while cleverly utilizing mirrors to overcome any obstructed view on the cruise ship.

By positioning mirrors strategically, you can create the illusion of an unobstructed view. Place a mirror on a nearby wall or even on the opposite side of the room, reflecting the beautiful scenery back to you.

Opt for a seat that is close to a window or balcony, ensuring that you have a clear line of sight to the outside. Additionally, choose a seat that offers a panoramic view, such as a corner seat or one next to a large window. This way, you can maximize your chances of enjoying the scenery while minimizing any obstructions.

By utilizing mirrors and selecting optimal seating, you can make the most of your ocean view experience and truly immerse yourself in the beauty of the cruise ship surroundings.

Making the Most of Balcony Space

Get creative with your balcony space to transform it into a cozy oasis where you can relax and soak in the breathtaking ocean surroundings. Here are four ideas to help you make the most of your balcony:

Balcony Decorations: Add personal touches with potted plants, lanterns, or hanging lights. These create a serene and inviting atmosphere.

Maximizing Natural Light: Position seating or loungers to take advantage of optimal exposure to natural light. This brightens up the space and allows you to enjoy the view even indoors.

Multi-functional Furniture: Invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a table with storage or a bench with hidden compartments. This maximizes the limited space available.

Privacy Solutions: Install curtains, bamboo blinds, or a folding screen for privacy. Create a secluded space where you can unwind without distractions.

By utilizing these balcony enhancements, you can create an enjoyable retreat, even if you’re disappointed with your obstructed view.

What to Do if You’re Disappointed with Your Obstructed View

If you’re disappointed with your obstructed view on a cruise ship, there are a couple of things you can do to address the situation.

First, contact Guest Services or the Cruise Line to express your concerns and see if there are any alternative options available. They may be able to offer a room change or some kind of compensation for the inconvenience.

Additionally, explore alternative viewing areas on the ship, such as the observation deck or other public spaces, to try and find a better vantage point.

Contacting Guest Services or the Cruise Line

When you have an issue with an obstructed view on a cruise ship, contacting guest services or the cruise line can swiftly resolve the problem, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for you.

Did you know that 95% of cruise lines have a dedicated guest services department to assist passengers with any concerns they may have? Contacting customer service is the first step in resolving cabin issues. They have the expertise to guide you through the process and find a suitable solution.

Whether it’s a room change or compensation, they will work diligently to meet your needs.

Once you have addressed the issue, you can explore alternative viewing areas on the ship to make the most of your cruise experience. These areas often offer unobstructed views and can be a great way to enjoy the scenery.

Exploring Alternative Viewing Areas on the Ship

Discovering hidden gems on the ship will transport you to breathtaking vantage points, allowing you to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds you. Here are four alternative seating options and creative room configurations that can enhance your cruise experience:

The Promenade Deck: This spacious area provides unobstructed views of the ocean and the ship’s surroundings. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

In the next section, we will discuss other considerations when booking a cruise.

Other Considerations When Booking a Cruise

Before booking your cruise, there are other factors to consider. One important factor is the potential for an obstructed view. When you’re researching cabin categories, make sure to carefully examine the deck plans provided by the cruise line. These plans will show you the location of lifeboats, tenders, or other structures that may obstruct your view. It’s crucial to choose a cabin that is away from these potential obstructions.

Another consideration is the ship’s layout and the placement of public areas. Cabins located near high-traffic areas like elevators or stairwells may experience more noise and foot traffic. This can be something to think about when booking your cabin.

By taking these details into account and doing thorough research, you can minimize the risk of having an obstructed view during your cruise.

Now, let’s move on to real-life experiences and testimonials of obstructed views.

Real-Life Experiences and Testimonials of Obstructed Views

Take a moment to hear from fellow travelers who have encountered unexpected surprises when gazing out from their cabin windows. While an obstructed view on a cruise ship may not always be a deal-breaker, it can certainly affect your overall experience.

Some passengers have reported obstructions such as lifeboats, maintenance equipment, or even large overhanging structures that hindered their view. However, it is worth noting that cruise lines have made efforts to enhance visibility for these cabins. They have installed cameras that project live footage of the outside view onto the cabin’s television screen, providing an alternative viewing option.

Additionally, some ships offer public viewing areas or lounges with panoramic windows, allowing guests to enjoy unobstructed views. These real-life experiences highlight the importance of researching and understanding the potential limitations of your cabin before booking.

Now, let’s discuss some final thoughts and recommendations for choosing your cruise cabin.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations for Choosing Your Cruise Cabin

After reading about the real-life experiences and testimonials of obstructed views on cruise ships, I can’t help but feel more informed and cautious about choosing the right cabin for my next cruise. It’s clear that having an obstructed view can have a significant impact on the overall enjoyment of the trip.

However, armed with this knowledge, I feel confident that I can make a more informed decision.

Moving forward, I will pay extra attention to cabin location and deck plans to ensure I have the best possible view. I will also explore alternative viewing areas on the ship, such as observation decks or lounges, that may offer enhancing views without the risk of obstruction.

By doing so, I can maximize my cruise experience and avoid any disappointment that may arise from an obstructed cabin view.

Imagine this: you’ve been dreaming of a cruise vacation for months, and finally the day has come. You board the ship, excited to explore the new destinations and make memories with your loved ones. But when you get to your cabin, you’re disappointed to find that your view is obstructed by a lifeboat or other structure.

If you’re like most people, you paid a premium for a cabin with a view, so this is understandably frustrating. But what exactly is an obstructed view on a cruise, and what can you do to avoid it?

In this article, we’ll discuss what an obstructed view is, why it happens, and what you can do to minimize the chances of getting one. We’ll also provide tips for dealing with an obstructed view if you do end up with one.

So if you’re worried about getting an obstructed view on your next cruise, read on for all the information you need.

“`html

1. Causes of Obstructed View on Cruise

There are a number of factors that can contribute to an obstructed view on a cruise ship, including:

  • The design of the ship: Some cruise ships have more obstructed views than others, depending on their design. For example, ships with a lot of overhangs or balconies can block views from certain parts of the ship.
  • The location of your cabin: The location of your cabin can also affect your view. Cabins on lower decks or in the center of the ship are more likely to have obstructed views than cabins on higher decks or towards the sides of the ship.
  • The time of day: The time of day can also affect your view. During the day, the sun can create glare that obscures views, while at night, the lights from other ships or buildings can create reflections that block your view.
  • The weather: The weather can also play a role in obstructing your view. Strong winds or rain can cause waves to crash over the sides of the ship, blocking your view of the ocean. Fog or clouds can also obscure your view of the horizon.

2. Impact of Obstructed View on Cruise

An obstructed view can have a number of negative impacts on your cruise experience, including:

  • Reduced enjoyment of the scenery: One of the main reasons people take cruises is to enjoy the scenery. An obstructed view can significantly reduce your ability to enjoy the views from the ship.
  • Less privacy: Cabins with obstructed views are often less private than cabins with unobstructed views. This can be a problem if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to stay.
  • Reduced resale value: Cabins with obstructed views typically have a lower resale value than cabins with unobstructed views. This is because buyers are less likely to be willing to pay a premium for a cabin that has limited views.

3. Tips for Dealing with Obstructed View on Cruise

If you are concerned about having an obstructed view on your cruise, there are a few things you can do to minimize the impact:

  • Choose a cabin with a higher deck and towards the sides of the ship. This will give you the best chance of having an unobstructed view.
  • Avoid cabins that are located near overhangs or balconies. These areas are more likely to have obstructed views.
  • Be aware of the time of day and the weather conditions. Strong winds, rain, fog, and clouds can all contribute to obstructed views.
  • Adjust your expectations. If you have an obstructed view, it is important to adjust your expectations and focus on the other aspects of your cruise experience.

An obstructed view can be a frustrating experience, but it is important to remember that there are a number of things you can do to minimize the impact. By following the tips in this article, you can still enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable cruise experience, even if you have an obstructed view.

3. Obstructions from Other Passengers

When you’re on a cruise ship, you’re sharing a relatively small space with hundreds or even thousands of other people. This can lead to some potential problems, one of which is obstructed views.

If you’re hoping to have a clear view of the ocean, the coastline, or other landmarks, you may be disappointed to find that your view is blocked by other passengers. This can be especially frustrating if you’ve paid for a premium cabin with a balcony or a window.

There are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of having your view obstructed by other passengers. First, try to book a cabin on a lower deck. The higher up you go, the more likely it is that your view will be blocked by lifeboats, masts, or other structures. Second, choose a cabin that’s not located near the elevators or stairwells. These areas are often crowded with people, which can further obstruct your view.

If you’re still having trouble finding a cabin with a clear view, you may want to consider purchasing a balcony or a window seat. These options will give you a more private space to enjoy the view, and you’ll be less likely to be bothered by other passengers.

Of course, even if you do everything you can to avoid it, there’s always a chance that your view will be obstructed by other passengers. If this happens, try to relax and enjoy the moment. After all, you’re on a cruise ship, and there are plenty of other things to see and do besides staring out the window.

Obstructed views on cruise ships can be a frustrating experience, but there are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of it happening. By choosing a lower deck cabin, avoiding cabins near the elevators or stairwells, and purchasing a balcony or a window seat, you can increase your chances of having a clear view of the ocean and the coastline.

If you do experience an obstructed view, try to relax and enjoy the moment. After all, you’re on a cruise ship, and there are plenty of other things to see and do besides staring out the window.

Q: Can I get a refund for an obstructed view on a cruise? A: It depends on the cruise line’s policy. Some cruise lines will offer a refund or a partial refund for an obstructed view, while others will not. This is one of the Celebrity ships design flaws.

I would recommend balcony cabins located on the "humps" (the front and the middle ones, deck 9 and higher) or on decks 10 - 12 to avoid this unpleasant situation.

In this picture you see a man standing on deck 10.

The deck where the lifeboats are located is Deck 5 so it would make where the man is standing as being on Deck 8, not 10.

Oh, yes, yes, the boats are on deck 5, sure.

My slip on numbers, thank you.

I think it depends on your preference and budget.

We have a partially obstructed view balcony cabin booked on the Reflection for the Spring and I am hoping for the best. We originally booked a balcony guarantee, but were given the partially obstructed. It was a great price and less expensive than an outside. I keep checking prices, but thus far, balcony cabins are much more than we are paying. I think it depends on your budget, but for us, we are OK with it.

Thank you for your replies and pictures. I will surely take this into consideration.

The 2D"s have the lifeboat tops about railing high and the tops are at floor level on the 2C"s. both have views forward, aft and straight out but just not down to the water. I think they are very good value as they are usually priced accordingly:)

I booked a 2C category on Deck 6 (Continental) on my upcoming Silhouette cruise next Sunday. It was listed as a 30% obstruction but in fact my balcony has no obstruction whatsoever. It is the very last cabin in the aft section of the ship. I did some research prior to booking this cabin and even after paying the single supplement the price was too good to pass up. Spending some time researching cabins has many advantages.:)

We had a 2C aft balcony (Cabin 6301) on Reflection and were surprised at the obstruction since it's not designated as having an obstructed view. The obstruction was an overhang/decking that jetted out from Deck 6 about 12-15 feet from the edge of our balcony. You can't see straight down to the water, if that's important to you, but you can easily look out. Here is a pic so you can see it.

Thank you for the the photos. We are booked on Refection Deck 6 (30 Aug 13) so we now know what to expect! I have been 'sweating' about the level of 'obstruction' and even contacted the TA to enquire about changing. However owing to the reasonably expensive cost to upgrade we are staying put. You have made me relaxed and reasonably happy.

3,000+ Club

I have been studying the reflection deck plan because so many cabins show obstructed view.. I am really shocked that a brand new ship design is like this..:(

here's our obstruction:

Could you tell me if 6251 was a 2d(obstructed) or a 2c (Partially obstructed)?

We have 6263 on the Reflection and it is supposed to be partially obstructed.

Whether you like a 2C cabin depends on your preference. I've stayed in them several times. The deck 6 aft location is really convenient - one or two decks down to bars, restaurants, casino. A quick elevator ride up directly to the entrance of the buffet and pools. The obstruction is the lifeboats on Deck 5. The tops of the lifeboats are level with the floor of the balcony so your view down of the water is obstructed. The view out straight is usually fine except for an occasional piece of the equipment supporting the lifeboats but that only blocks a small part of the view. I think the location and the reduced cost are the big pluses for these cabins and they are worth consideration. A few of them are "on the hump" and have larger balconies. It's also kind of interesting to see how the lifeboats work and how they look inside as you can easily watch when they take them down for use in drills, etc.

NorthCarolinaBelle

We have two balconies in the center of the hump on deck six. Photos of the ship don't appear to show any obstructions, but does anybody know if that's really true?

robtulipe

It is on X's website, as copied below, that all the 2C cabins has a partially obstructed balcony.

Note: 2C Veranda Staterooms have partially obstructed veranda views, and 2D Veranda Staterooms have obstructed veranda views.

For that cabin it wasn't a lifeboat but roof of the Blu's dining room as you mentioned.

I know there isn't any obstructions for center hump balconies on Silhouette, shot below of port side hump, and the older Solstice class ships.

attachment.php?attachmentid=255991&d=1356968496

We are in 8128 (its located mid-ship) for a Med cruise on the Reflection in October which I just booked a couple days ago.

Am I high enough to avoid the view of the life boats? Also, I noticed on the chart that it had a triangle designation. That means one upper berth. Does that mean we will be in bunk beds? Or is just one of those pop down from the ceiling bunk beds that you don't see unless you use it? When I sailed on the Solstice last October, we had a very nice room with a couch and a queen size bed. Its just my wife and I.

Thanks, Banjo

I, too, am "concerned" as we are in cabin 6210 and that is considered an "angled" hump balcony. I have been offered a complimentary upgrade from 2D to 1B but that would be on deck 9 and we have always had lower decks. This is our first balcony and I don't know if we should move. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks Bob! Somehow we missed that it was going to be partially obstructed. The overhang wasn't expected, and we didn't care for it, but at least we could look out even though we couldn't see down.

Are you sure about your cabin assignment? 8128 is not in a midship position but rather to the front of the ship: That might mean a bit more motion but in any case a free view - no life boat in sight!

Don't worry - you will have nice and comfy beds ( single or pushed together as a double/ queen size, just as you wish - it's the same as on "Solstice") You won't notice the pull-out bed, either.

You'll like the "Reflection" - we did!!

Personally I'd move to a higher deck. We were on deck 9 on "Reflection" and it was great - near to the card room and the "Hideaway" with its comfy chairs and the coffee machine... We also had cat. 1B and liked it very much. The only (slight) drawback : Different to the cabins on the other S-class ships 1B SOME cabins have connecting doors inside the cabin: We didn't notice anything, no noise, but if that worries you I'd ask for the cabin number first to decide or ask for a non-connecting cabin.

I know there isn't any obstructions for center hump balconies on Silhouette, shot below of port side hump, and the older Solstice class ships.

Thank you so much!

Thanks Grayjay.

My mistake, it is 8218. Midship. When I was on the Solstice last Fall we were in 7134. That was in front. Had a unobstructed view with no life boats below. We had pretty much calm seas in the Mediterranean so did not notice much rocking.

What is your experience with the bunk bed rooms on the Reflection? Is it a drop down? Also is the room set much differently then non-bunk bed room on the Solstice?

Happy New Year, Banjo

Obstructed View Cabins on Holland America Oosterdam

ocean view cabin

The Oosterdam’s obstructed view cabins behind the lifeboats have nearly a full outside wall of window

When choosing your cruise ship cabin, some ships offer rooms with obstructed views. These come at a lower price than standard ocean view cabins, but what (if anything) can you see? The answer to that varies greatly. Obstructed view cabins are often located behind lifeboats, which is where you find them on Holland America’s Oosterdam. Some ships have no obstructed view cabins at all. Others have them in places like behind a bulkhead or along the promenade deck with a wall blocking all or part of the sea view.

obstructed view room

Cabin 4118 is designated as fully obstructed and has a tender boat blocking the window

If you just want some natural light in the room a fully obstructed window works, but if you actually want to see something choose your room carefully. Some cabins are designated fully obstructed while others are designated partially obstructed and (of course) have a bit higher price tag for the partial views.

obstructed view cabin

Cabin 4120 is the last one in the row of obstructed view cabins. It’s designated as fully obstructed, but has a better sea view than some partial view cabins – and a view of a neighboring cabin’s balcony

Some rooms marked as fully obstructed really are, but others actually have a better view than some of the ones with the partial obstruction designation. You might even see a bit through the windows of a tender from a fully obstructed cabin.

obstructed view cabin

Cabin 4112 is located between tenders and designated as partial view

On the Oosterdam the outer wall of the obstructed view cabins is almost all window, meaning that if there is anywhere at all that is not blocked by a lifeboat or the structures surrounding them you can see out from that spot. This is a great benefit since some ships just have a small window in the middle of a solid wall providing far less chance of getting any sort of a view.

view under a lifeboat to the deck below

looking down under the lifeboat to the promenade deck from cabin 4086

With the Oosterdam’s floor to ceiling window you can at least look under the lifeboat down to the promenade deck even if the rest of your view is blocked.

Oosterdam deck plan for deck 4

When choosing an obstructed view cabin use the ship’s deck plans as your guide. Most cruise lines have them available on their website. On the Oosterdam for example, using the deck plan as your guide you can see which rooms are located fully behind lifeboats or tenders and which are at least partially in between them.

window behind a lifeboat

Cabin 4086 is designated as fully obstructed, but you can see over the top of the lifeboat

They also draw the tenders differently than the ones that are just lifeboats, which is good to know because the tenders are taller. On most ships you can see something over the top of the shorter lifeboats, but not the tenders. With rooms completely behind a tender the best you can hope for is a peek-a-boo view through the tender’s windows – if it happens to have windows placed where you can see through them and out to the other side.

obstructed view cruise ship cabin

Cabin 4110 is between tenders. Though designated fully obstructed, it has a partial view.

ocean view obstructed cruise ship cabins

Cabin 4102 is also between tenders, but is designated as having a partial view.

If your window is between boats you get something of a view. How much or little depends on both how much of each boat is in front of your window and how much structure there is between the boats. There is always some because something has to hold them in place.

almost obstructed view

fully obstructed room 4114 is behind the bow of a tender with just a hint of open space

If you look at the deck plans to the Oosterdam you might notice it has a few rooms marked as fully obstructed that are not completely behind lifeboats. These will be the best bargains since you are paying for fully obstructed yet will be able to at least see something.

views vary widely on obstructed view cabins

cabin 4090 between a lifeboat and glass elevator has a pretty good view for a fully obstructed cabin

Besides the end of the row of lifeboats being a good place to look for better views from obstructed view cabins, anywhere with a break in the structure will have more view as well. The Oosterdam has glass elevators going up the outside of the ship near the center.

lifeboat and sea view

Cabin 4092 is on the other side of the elevator from 4090 and listed as having a partial view

This adds some space between the lifeboats and tenders and makes for a pretty good view if you don’t mind being next to a glass elevator. The two by the glass elevators next to the lifeboats are designated as fully obstructed while the ones on the side by the tenders are listed as partially obstructed though the better view is actually on the lifeboat side.

when your obstructed view is fully obstructed

from cabin 4118 you get a great view of the inside of a tender

Of course some of the cabins listed as fully obstructed actually are, which is why it is important to choose carefully when booking an obstructed view cabin.

lifeboat view

partial view cabin 4088 sits between lifeboats offering view both above and between the boats

When looking to save money on your cabin while at least getting some natural light and maybe even a bit of a view the obstructed view cabins are a great way to go. The real views are better than those shown here since they don’t have all the room reflections the camera picked up in these photos. Ocean view cabins are generally bigger than inside cabins so even if you don’t get much of a view you at least have a bit more space.

Sounds like some solid tips about obstructed-view cabins. Very interesting. 🍸

' src=

Thanks. Doing some research when booking an obstructed view cabin can make a world of difference since moving over just one cabin can mean the difference between having a view and seeing nothing.

' src=

by any chance, any photos of 4056? Only see outside from photos of 4054 in other similar ships.

No, but the inside will be the same as the other ocean view cabins, and it will have a view. It is in the area of lifeboats which are short enough to see over, unlike the taller tenders. It is also not directly behind a lifeboat so the view from that cabin will be one of the better ones for that area.

' src=

This is incredibly helpful, thanks so much! By far the most detail I could find re. the issues with specific cabins.

' src=

Does anyone have pictures from 4096? on the deck plan it looks completely blocked. Thanks

I do not have a photo of that room, but from the deck plan you can see that the view will be fully blocked by a tender.

So many thanks to you and this information you share. It makes a difference.

I’m glad to be of help.

What is a Stateroom on a Cruise Ship and Which is Best?

W hen you start to book a cruise vacation, you’ll have some things to consider. First, you’ll want to choose which cruise line you plan to sail on. Next, you’ll want to look at individual ships, itineraries, and dates. Once you’ve narrowed down the exact sailing, it’s time to choose your stateroom.

What is a stateroom on a cruise ship? A stateroom is like a hotel room, but at sea. While you will hopefully be spending lots of time exploring the ship and out at the various ports of call, you’ll still spend lots of time in your room.

It’s important to not only understand what the different stateroom types are (like balcony, interior, etc ) but also to understand cabin location. Some people find that they have strong performances for the stateroom location, while other people won’t care. Cabin type is important, however.

Here’s the information you’ll need to know about choosing a stateroom, based on your preferences and budget. Keep in mind that every cruise line is a bit different in how it classifies staterooms, so you may need to do a little additional research on your specific cruise line.

What is a Stateroom on a Cruise Ship and Which One is Best

Types of cruise ship staterooms and differences.

Here are some of the most popular types of cabins. Not every cruise line/cruise ship will have every type of room, so you’ll have to look at the booking details and deck plan to see what is available on your sailing. You can choose your cruise ship cabins during the booking process.

Interior Staterooms: These rooms are often a great deal. They don’t offer balconies or windows, unlike outside cabins. I personally find that I need to have a view of the ocean, even for just the natural light. However, you can definitely save money by choosing an interior room, and they can be a good value.

Porthole Stateroom : This type of stateroom isn’t available on all cruise ships. With a porthole view, you’ll have a round, porthole as a window, rather than floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s no exterior access with this type of room.

Oceanview Stateroom: An oceanview cabin will typically have larger windows than a porthole stateroom. There’s a full view of the ocean, but you won’t be able to go outside from your room in an oceanview cabin without a balcony. Within this stateroom category, there are often obstructed view or partial view rooms, although there’s typically a large window.

Balcony Stateroom : This type of stateroom, also called a verandah stateroom (on Disney Cruise Line), offers a private balcony with access to the outside. Like oceanview rooms, sometimes balcony rooms have obstructed views or larger/smaller balconies. I prefer a balcony room because I really enjoy spending time outside, reading a book and drinking my coffee. While you can save money by choosing a room without a balcony, I personally feel it’s worth it.

Cruise Suite: If you are looking for a more luxurious experience at sea, there are also suites to consider. These can vary from a small junior suite to multi-bedroom suites, depending on the ship. Many cruise suites also come with concierge services, including special happy hours, extra service, and dedicated lounges and sun decks.

Locations of Staterooms

Another consideration is the location of your stateroom. In some cases, you’ll get a choice. If you book a GTY (guaranteed) stateroom, or sail on Virgin Voyages , you won’t have a room location option.

Some people care more about stateroom location than others. So you’ll have to think about your preferences before you book. Options will include the deck (level) as well as the location on the ship – forward, aft, or midship.

On smaller ships, the location doesn’t matter as much. But on larger ships, like the Royal Caribbean Oasis Class (including the Wonder and the Allure ), you’ll really want to make sure you get a location you like.

Often the higher decks are preferable. However, you may not want to be under certain areas of a ship. This would include a busy nightclub, a pool deck, or a smokey casino.

Higher decks do sometimes feel more movement but may be closer to the action. You may want to think about what parts of the ship you going to be in the most, and consider a stateroom that will require the least amount of stairs. Lower decks typically have less movement but do not always have the best view.

In addition to the deck, you’ll want to decide what part of the ship to be in – midship, forward, or aft. Midship is usually the best option if possible. You’ll be in the center of the action and won’t have to walk too far in either direction to get to wherever you are going.

To me, the type of stateroom I book is much more important than the location. I’ve stayed all over cruise ships and have always had a great experience. If your sailing has an option for a guaranteed room, you may be able to save money if you don’t care about location. It can be a great way to save some money on your vacation – that you can use on drinks, specialty dining, or excursions!

You’ll also want to look beyond the deck and location. For this, you’ll need to look at the deck plan for your ship. In general, you want to look to see if you are near an elevator or service area, or are in an area where others can see your balcony from the top decks. These aren’t necessarily deal-breakers (unless you are a very light sleeper), but if you have a choice, it’s good to avoid these cruise staterooms.

General Stateroom Amenities

Before you set sail, you’ll want to see what stateroom amenities are offered. That will make sure you are fully prepared before you get on board.

Some things to look for are hairdryers, outlets, type of closet/space, bed configurations, safes, and bathroom setup. Keep in mind that regardless of what type of stateroom you book, it’s likely to be small. Even the most luxurious staterooms are still small. So don’t overpack and try to bring things that are easy to tuck into small spaces.

You’ll also want to see what the bed configuration is. Is there a king-size bed? A sofa bed? Bunk beds? Know in advance, especially when traveling with your whole family.

Choosing the Best Stateroom

If you’ve never sailed on a cruise ship, you may not know what the best staterooms are. Luckily, there are some resources that you can use to get reviews and learn more about rooms on various ships. One option is to do an internet search or Facebook search for your cruise ship. You may find some reviews of cabins.

Another option is the Cruise Deck Plan database . This website offers images and deck plans for a huge variety of popular cruise lines/cruise ships. You can look for one particular ship and see all the details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you choose your stateroom on a cruise ship?

On most lines, you can, unless you book a guaranteed cabin (GYT). Virgin Voyages, however, doesn’t let you book your room.

Do staterooms have a private bathroom?

Yes, staterooms will have a private bathroom, in every type of cabin.

Is it worth it to have a balcony on a stateroom?

I think it’s absolutely worth it because I typically spend lots of time on the balcony. Having your own private balcony can give you some additional space to spread out. While balcony staterooms do cost more money, I think it’s worth it.

Is there a difference between a cabin and a stateroom on a cruise ship?

No, a cabin and a stateroom are synonymous.

Is stateroom location important?

It can be important if you are concerned about shorter walks and noise levels in your cruise experience.

What is the best cruise ship cabin?

That can vary based on your preferences. I personally prefer a balcony cabin in the middle of the ship.

What is your favorite stateroom location on a cruise ship?

The six American and two Australian passengers who were stranded on an African island when a Norwegian Cruise Line ship sailed off without them have returned to the vessel to continue their African voyage, as the cruise line revealed that the group caused their travel headaches over the past few days by missing their departure time by over an hour.

The eight passengers reboarded the ship making a 20-day journey across Africa on Tuesday morning in Dakar, Senegal, a spokesperson for Norwegian confirmed to The Post.

Kurt Gies, the son-in-law of an elderly woman who was also left behind by the ship after she suffered a stroke on a tour, also said he received a text message from one of the group members, Jill Campbell, saying she and her husband reboarded the ship but have not yet spoken with anyone from guest services or Norwegian Cruise Line.

“The only thing we have received so far is [a] small note from the food and beverage director with six little treats left in our state room,” Gies said she texted him.

The crew had to race through seven different countries in 48 hours to meet the ship in Senegal on Tuesday.

But by the time South Carolina couple Jill and Jay Campbell arrived in the country, they said, they weren’t even sure whether they even wanted to get back on the ship.

“After what we witnessed, we truly believe there is a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed — they followed those rules too rigidly,” Jill Campbell  told the “Today” show.

“I really feel that they forgot they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and well-being of their customers should be their first priority,” she added, claiming the crew of the ship had a “basic duty of care that they had forgotten about.”

The eight passengers — including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition — claimed they were left behind with no money and without vital medications after the Norwegian Dawn left São Tomé without them.

The Campbells claimed the ship was still anchored off the coast of the Central African island when they showed up on Friday, but the skipper refused to let them board.

A passenger being refused to board the ship.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line, however, said the group had missed the all-aboard time by more than an hour after taking a private tour of the island.

“When they missed the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. by more than an hour, their passports were left with the local port agent for retrieval when they returned to the port from their private tour (not organized by us), per the protocol,” the spokesperson said.

The Campbells have acknowledged there was “an issue” on their tour of the island, and that the guide “didn’t get us back” to the ship in time on Friday.

“We were like, ‘Our time is getting really short,’ and they were like’ ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,’” Jay said, adding that the tour operator contacted the captain to let them know about the delay.

8 cruise ship passengers were left stranded on an African Island.

In its statement, the company said that “once the guests did not make it back to the ship at the previously communicated all aboard time, we worked with them and the local port agent to assist with obtaining the necessary visas for them to rejoin the ship at the next available port.”

Attorney James Diamond from TWC Lawyers said it is a “hard and fast rule” that a ship can leave once a final call has been made.

“They pay a lot of money for docking fees, and renting out the space,” he told ”Seven’s Sunrise.”

“They have times that they have to leave, those times are published and unfortunately, I know it’s morally incorrect, but they do have the right to leave,” he said.
