The Best Cruises for Non-Cruisers

By Fran Golden

UnCruise

“I am not a cruiser.” That's the phrase that Captain Dan Blanchard, CEO of UnCruise Adventures , says he hears often from passengers onboard his company’s nine small ships.

That works, because Blanchard doesn't see UnCruise as a traditional cruise line , either. Instead, he sees his 22- to 90-passenger ships more as providing a soft adventure experience that happens to be on water. In that floating vacation market, UnCruise is not alone. A bevy of cruise companies—some you may never have heard of—cater to a subset of seagoing travelers who don't love the idea of big cruise ships with casinos, show productions, and crowds. Yet they still want to travel to places most accessible by water.

Some are sailors who want to watch the sheets flapping in the wind, some are excited about beyond-the-norm experiences such as traveling on ships that also carry cargo. Others are looking for intimate cultural experiences or itineraries where you pretty much stay in the wilderness . These “non-cruisers” tend to put destination first, well ahead of modes of transportation. They aren’t looking for anything too fussy in terms of shipboard accoutrements—but they are willing to shell out for an extraordinary experience that happens to involve getting on a ship.

For those who want adventure—with a side of luxury

Luxury expedition ships are part of a growing trend that appeal to an adventurous set who also want the finer things in life, like suites with butler service. Lindblad Expeditions is something else entirely. “It’s not a cruise; we want to curate something,” says Sven Lindblad, CEO and founder of the line, which in partnership with National Geographic operates more than a dozen small ships in destinations including Antarctica and the Arctic, Galapagos , and the Mediterranean. “The ship is secondary, a place to shower, breathe, hang out," says Lindblad. "It is comfortable and the service is great. But the main show is outside of the ship.”

“You are closer to areas you want to see, whether it’s a wildlife area, natural history, or a cultural area,” says Lindblad fan Judy Pool of Denver. Her favorite itineraries include seeing the penguins and other animals in the Antarctic and South Georgia, and the culture and natural history in the British Isles. Then there was the time in Indonesia when the captain got word that a volcano was erupting. “We went off course and watched the volcano and the lava coming down into the ocean for at least two hours, and this was at 11 p.m. at night,” Pool says. “That kind of flexibility appeals to me.”

Small adventure ships tend to have a convivial atmosphere, partly because there are few public spaces to mingle in beyond an open-seating dining room, the outdoor deck, and a lounge where everyone gathers for cocktails. Passengers bond over shared experiences (excursions often are included in the cruise fare). Cabins are comfortable but may be sparse, the atmosphere casual . “You might bring a nice pair of pants or blouse or something, but other than that it’s khakis and shorts and hiking boots or tennis shoes, and layers, depending on where you are,” Pool says. “Most people carry cameras and binoculars. It’s part of the uniform.”

Blanchard of UnCruise says about 60 percent of his guests are the same folks who backpacked in Europe and are looking for that kind of experience at sea. “The rest tell us they just can’t handle the numbers on the big ships, and what is now being called ‘overtourism’ in the places where the big ships go,” he says.

The majority of UnCruise’s itineraries, in places such as Alaska , Latin America, the Sea of Cortez, and Hawaii, don’t visit big ports. After embarking you stay mostly in the wild, doing things like hiking and kayaking. “Our clients are well-heeled, have an adventuresome mindset, and want to stop in the forest and suck it in," says Blanchard. "Sit in a kayak and hear the distant whale blows. If you do stop, it is in very small villages and for cultural sights.”

SeaCloud

Sailing ships such as the Sea Cloud allow passengers to feel closer to the water.

For those who want a truly nautical experience

Fans of sailing also tend to consider themselves non-cruisers, attracted to ships where they can feel at one with the sea. On the real sailing ships of lines such as Star Clippers and German-owned Sea Cloud , passengers help pull the lines and dive right off the ship to cool off in the sea, in between visiting small ports popular with the yachting set.

On the three Star Clippers ships, sailing in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, or Southeast Asia , you can put on a harness and climb a small mast or choose to lounge in the bowsprit netting. The original 64-passenger Sea Cloud, built in the early 1930s by cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, adds a touch of history. That ship is chartered part of the year by Lindblad in the Mediterranean and also sails in the Caribbean. There’s also a 94-passenger Sea Cloud II, and a third sailing ship debuts next year.

For those who want to visit the most remote locations

Sue Golding, a professor emeritus at the University of Queensland in Australia, took a big ship once while returning home from South Africa. It wasn’t her favorite trip. “I am not sure we actually detest large ships, but have no desire to travel on one unless absolutely necessary,” she says. Drawn by destination, she’s recently been sailing with casual Australian line Coral Expeditions to places such as remote West Papua, Indonesia —where an itinerary highlight was being greeted by bare-chested, grass-skirted “warriors” in dugout canoes.

Among Golding’s favorite ship experiences were cruises along the coast of Norway with Hurtigruten . The Norwegian company’s 11 coastal ships (they also operate five expedition ships) carry international travelers as well as locals (using the ships as public transport), in addition to cars, freight, and mail. Year-round they visit 34 ports, from Bergen to Kirkenes in the far north. On six- or 12-day itineraries you stay in accommodations that may or may not have double beds, and leave the ship for excursions (for a fee) to see such sights as the sheer rock cliff-lined Geirangerfjord and the North Cape, far above the Arctic Circle. Since your ship may only be in port a few hours, you may re-board at a different place on the itinerary.

The tropical equivalent to Hurtigruten is the Aranui 5, part cargo ship, part passenger vessel, which does a regular two-week circuit between Papeete, Tahiti, and the Marquesas —serving as a lifeline to the small, remote islands. The French-flagged ship has accommodations ranging from cabins with private balconies to small dormitories for the budget-conscious. The 254 passengers hear lectures about Polynesian culture and learn to make leis when not hanging out at the pool, dining on French-influenced and Polynesian cuisine, or explore on shore (excursions included). At the 19 stops, the muscular crew uses cranes and brawn to download the cargo. Half the village might come out to collect kitchen appliances, food, bikes, even coffins. It’s as much a real-life experience as cruise vacation.

The Best Cruise Lines You’ve Never Heard Of

The Best Cruise Lines You’ve Never Heard Of

Native-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises gets passengers up close with nature in Alaska.

For the most part, the cruising world is dominated by a handful of major cruise companies—big names like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival and their affiliated brands. But the world’s waters are also home to numerous independent ship and expedition lines, companies that sail a little more under the radar. These smaller cruise lines, while lesser known, often offer sailing experiences that are very different from those on any mainstream cruise ship.

As a veteran cruiser, I’m often on the lookout for these hidden gem sailing options, outfitters that range from the luxurious to the more laid-back and that promise something the big cruise lines simply can’t provide, whether that’s a level of intimacy with much smaller passenger counts, access to destinations only smaller ships can get to, or more authentic local experiences.

From Nordic expedition companies to Native-owned small ship cruises in Alaska and eco-conscious explorations of the Great Barrier Reef, these independent cruise brands are shaking up the way we think about cruising.

Alaskan Dream Cruises

Best for Native-led nature and wildlife viewing in Alaska

More than any other cruise company operating in Alaska, Native-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises gets travelers up close to nature, glaciers, and wildlife, while also delivering meaningful cultural experiences.

Established in 2011 by the Sitka-based shipbuilding Allen family, the company has a fleet of casual 10- to 76-passenger ships staffed by Alaskans, including some Alaska Native guides. Through its close ties to the Indigenous communities of southeast Alaska, Alaskan Dream crafts itineraries that include visits to remote Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian villages. The company also offers select sailings that are fully dedicated to wilderness exploration, during which passengers explore landscapes via Zodiacs or kayaks or on foot.

Local culturalists continue your education onboard, where you’ll find a focus on local food and other Alaska products, such as Alaskan-made beer, spirits, and soap.

Albatros Expeditions

Best for Nordic-style polar expeditions

With more than 30 years of experience in polar destinations including Greenland and Svalbard, the family-owned, eco-conscious Danish polar cruise specialist Albatros Expeditions is newly marketing its value-priced small expedition ships to Americans. Onboard, expect Nordic hospitality and service as you explore narrow inlets and get close to shore with the ship’s fleet of Zodiacs. Guests may also spend their days kayaking, hiking, and snowshoeing with expedition leaders and biologists. Other polar experts will lead workshops and lectures, given in multiple languages to accommodate the multicultural mix of passengers onboard.

In December, Albatros launched a new eco-friendlier ship in Antarctica, the 186-passenger Ocean Victory (the same ship will spend its summers sailing Alaska via a charter by American Queen Voyages ). The ship has an X-Bow design for better fuel efficiency and less environmental impact. The company also has an older ship, the 198-passenger Ocean Atlantic , that together with the Ocean Albatros (a sister ship to Ocean Victory ) will be arriving to sail Arctic routes beginning in 2023.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Best for wellness and relaxation combined with expedition cruising

A new all-inclusive, luxe-adventure expedition cruise company, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Atlas Ocean Voyages is the first ocean cruise line to sail under the Portuguese flag. It’s part of the Portuguese company Mystic Invest Holdings, which for more than 25 years has operated river cruise ships, tours, and attractions for various brands.

The company’s first ocean ship, the polar-class, 196-passenger World Navigator , debuted last summer in the Mediterranean and is wintering on sailings in Antarctica (because that is summer down below). Sister ships are already in the works, including the World Traveller , which is launching in summer 2022.

A fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks gets passengers close to shore, while onboard attractions include the first SeaSpa by L’Occitane. To avoid stressing out marine life, the ships are equipped with a hydro jet propulsion system that facilitates nearly silent sailing for up to five knots.

Aurora Expeditions

Best for eco-conscious exploration

This 30-year-old Australian polar expedition company was the first to launch a ship with an X-Bow design for better fuel efficiency and less environmental impact—the 126-passenger Greg Mortimer , in 2019. Gaining a reputation for its eco-conscious ethic, Aurora Expeditions was voted “The World’s Leading Polar Operator” at the 2020 World Travel Awards .

The Greg Mortimer is spending the winter in Antarctica. A sister ship arrives in Alaska in the spring, the 126-passenger Sylvia Earle , named in honor of the renowned U.S. marine biologist, oceanographer, and conservationist. Earle herself will be leading a climate-focused Antarctica expedition on the ship in 2023. Onboard, nature lectures include discussions on protecting polar regions. The ship’s kitchen focuses on sustainable food products.

The Sylvia Earle will spend the upcoming summer in Alaska on expeditions that include the remote Aleutian Islands, a place few other cruise lines go.

Coral Expeditions

Best for relaxed and intimate Australia, New Zealand, and Indian Ocean cruises

Since the late 1980s, Australian cruise line Coral Expeditions has explored destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef and the remote Kimberley region in northwestern Australia, but until recently it was a best-kept secret of well-heeled locals. With two new ships, the company is branching out to a broader audience and now sails to destinations as varied as Tasmania, New Zealand, Indonesia’s Raja Ampat region, Melanesia, and the Indian Ocean.

The 120-passenger, diesel-electric Coral Adventurer and sister ship Coral Geographic make it easy for guests to get ashore. In addition to inflatable Zodiacs, which require some maneuvering to get into and out of, these ships deploy the company’s own easy step-on, lightweight metal Xplorer boats—with a hydraulic lift that lowers the tenders from ship to sea level and back.

Onboard, guests sleep in spacious, modern cabins or suites, and sip good Australian wines while listening to lectures by professors and other experts, some through a partnership with the Australian Geographic Society.

You won’t sacrifice comfort on an Eyos Expeditions polar adventure.

You won’t sacrifice comfort on an Eyos Expeditions polar adventure.

Eyos Expeditions

Best for super-luxe expedition cruises

Eyos Expeditions specializes in arranging charters of 12- to 22-passenger superyachts for well-heeled travelers looking to do private expeditions in such far-flung places as the Arctic and Antarctica—and newly, the South Pacific. For these cruises, Eyos arranges an expert team of navigators and guides. But it doesn’t just do semiprivate superyacht cruises. The company recently began selling limited passage for individuals on the ice-strengthened MV Nansen Explorer , a former Russian research ship reconfigured as a luxury polar superyacht. The ship formerly held 60 and now hosts only 12 guests, so there’s room to spread out.

You’ll pay a pretty penny for the MV Nansen Explorer sailings, which go way beyond the norm. The ship’s helipad, for instance, is the gateway to heli-skiing on deep powder runs on the Greenland island of Maniitsoq—one of the world’s most remote places to ski. For the less athletic, a late June sailing in Greenland travels 150 miles beyond the Arctic Circle to Disko Bay, home to some of the planet’s largest icebergs.

Sail away to the Caribbean with Island Windjammers.

Island Windjammers

Best for laid-back Caribbean cruises on sailing vessels

A well-kept secret in the Caribbean since 2009, those who are “in the know” tend to book Island Windjammers cruises long in advance to secure a coveted spot. This cruise line is all about casual sailings in the sun, hanging out on the deck of a tall ship, watching the sails catch the sea breezes while sipping a complimentary rum punch, and dining alfresco—most dining is outdoors. A rite of passage is jumping off the ship Tarzan-style on the rope swing, or passengers can also borrow water toys that include paddleboards and kayaks for more water fun.

On the 26-passenger classic clipper ship Vela or the company’s 10-passenger schooner, Diamant , it’s easy to imagine you are on your own private yacht. Your cabin may be snug, with just a porthole and a small bathroom (both ships also have more lavish Owner’s suites), but who cares? This is about embracing the Caribbean’s chill vibes—on 6- or 12-night routes that get you to such scenic places as the British Virgin Islands or Grenada and the Grenadines.

Kontiki Expeditions

Best for locally operated luxe Ecuador cruises

Exploring rarely visited areas of the Ecuadorian coastline, the locally owned Kontiki Expeditions debuted this winter with its first ship and an already impressive pedigree—the high-style 18-passenger Kontiki Wayra , a 128-foot motor yacht, is the first water-based member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection .

Done up in sleek contemporary decor, the yacht is staffed by a 10-member local crew that includes a chef and team of wellness professionals ready to deliver massages, plus local guides leading outings to pristine beaches, nature preserves populated by howler monkeys, and local communities, where guests learn about chocolate production or mingle with local artisans, such as straw weavers. During the eight-day cruises between Guayaquil and Manta, the 18 guests will also have the opportunity to join the chef in gathering local ingredients to serve onboard.

Best for practically private polar cruises

This relaxed, eco-friendly Swedish polar specialist offers intimate cruise experiences on ships that carry 12 to 53 passengers. Established in 1999, PolarQuest explores Svalbard, following the ice floe and venturing into narrow fjords and other remote areas with itineraries that are up to the discretion of the captain.

The ships include the repurposed 12-passenger MS Stockholm , built in 1953 for the Swedish Maritime Administration; and the 12-passenger MS Sjøveien , built in 1964 for the Norwegian government. Both have cabins with en suite bathrooms. Other PolarQuest destinations include Greenland, the Norwegian coast, and Lofoten Islands. According to the company, the trips are 100 percent climate compensated—it tracks emissions and then donates to climate projects in the South Pole.

Charting New Waters: Exceptional Cruise Lines for Non-Cruisers

Our users support our website. therefore, we sometimes earn affiliate commissions when you click through the affiliate links on our website. rest assured that all of our recommendations are made whole-heartedly with the intent of helping travelers like you discover the world authentically and responsibly..

Embarking on a cruise line for non-cruisers often involves a dizzying array of travel choices, from commercial flights to scenic train routes. Yet, there exists a travel medium that too often escapes the discerning eye: the cruise line. Typically dismissed by frequent travelers as overly commercial or lacking in authentic experiences, cruises, when carefully selected, offer unparalleled luxury, adventure and the opportunity to explore multiple locales with the utmost convenience. Now, let’s explore the 8 Best Luxury Cruise Lines For Ocean Cruises In 2022 and 2023 .

“The journey, not the arrival matters.”

– T.S. Elliot

For those skeptical of sea voyages, certain cruise lines elevate the experience to such an extent that even the most seasoned globetrotter may find them irresistible. Allow us to guide you through the intricacies of choosing a cruise line for non-cruisers that not only defies preconceived notions but also unlocks access to awe-inspiring destinations in a manner befitting the sophisticated traveler.

cruise vacation for non-cruisers

Mainstream vs. Luxury Cruises

“There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea.”

– Joseph Conrad

Upon hearing the term “cruise,” many individuals immediately conjure images of colossal vessels teeming with thousands of passengers, bustling buffets, and cheesy entertainment options. This perception, primarily shaped by mainstream cruise giants such as NCL and Royal Caribbean, unfortunately eclipses the lesser-known yet infinitely more refined cruise line for non-cruisers available in the market. However, there are exceptional options catering to families, check out our list of the Best Cruise Lines For Families That Adults and Children Will Love .

Smaller ocean cruises, exemplified by companies like  Windstar , SeaDream , National Geographic and Explora , provide an ideal cruise line for non-cruisers seeking a more intimate experience. These intimate ships, often carrying fewer than 300 passengers, offer a unique blend of luxury and authenticity beyond the monolithic approach of larger cruise lines. Moreover, luxury cruise lines, often in a category of their own, not only deliver unparalleled comfort but also facilitate the exploration of exotic destinations in a far more personalized manner. Such experiences beckon to those who demand more than just a cursory glance at the world’s wonders.

Luxury vs. Niche Cruises

A myriad of options punctuate the travel landscape. Yet, the offerings from niche cruise lines like Windstar, Explora, SeaDream, and Lindblad occupy a singular space distinct from mainstream behemoths and even from their luxury counterparts like Regent , Silversea , and Seabourn . The differentiation is multifaceted, beginning with scale. Unlike large vessels that act as floating cities, niche cruises (with the exception of Explora

Journeys) focus on a more intimate experience, often accommodating a smaller cadre of passengers. This intimacy lends itself to a customized voyage, replete with opportunities for meaningful interactions and personalized service.

Beyond the tangible differences in size and passenger count, the ethos of these niche cruise lines diverges markedly from others. They cater to travelers with an insatiable intellectual curiosity and sense of adventure, offering a vacation and an educational sojourn. It is common to find expert-led seminars, eco-conscious practices, and experiential activities that dive deeply into local cultures, ecology, and history.

Meanwhile, luxury lines such as Regent, Silversea, and Seabourn excel in luxury and are designed to meet the desires of travelers seeking refinement and amenities. While they, too, sail to exotic locales, the focus is more on the onboard experience, often likened to a floating five-star hotel. In contrast, niche lines sacrifice none of the comfort but offer a balanced focus between onboard luxury and immersive off-board experiences and provide a unique cruise line for non-cruisers who seek adventure.

When to Consider a Cruise

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”

– Martin Buber

Even for the well-traveled individual who typically eschews cruises in favor of land-based itineraries, there are compelling scenarios where a water voyage offers distinct advantages. Discover how to choose the best one in our guide: How To Choose The Best Expedition Cruise Line For Your Next Adventure . Consider a cruise line for non-cruisers when exploring destinations like the Greek Isles —each island is a unique tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. A cruise offers the convenience of exploring multiple islands without the logistical burdens of ferry schedules and accommodation transfers, thus enabling a more comprehensive and relaxed experience.

Similarly, remote destinations such as Antarctica or the Galápagos Islands are often more accessible and environmentally responsible to visit via specialized expedition cruises. These cruises often collaborate with conservationists and local experts, providing invaluable insights that enrich the journey far beyond the aesthetic allure of untouched landscapes. In such instances, a well-chosen cruise allows the discerning traveler to maximize their exploration and intellectual enrichment without sacrificing comfort or luxury, making it an ideal choice for cruise line for non-cruisers. Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

Kristine Hansen

One of the reasons why we board cruise ships is to experience the world, whether that's island hopping in the Caribbean, animal watching in Alaska or stepping into fairy-tale towns across Europe. But is it better to do your in-port exploration on a ship-sponsored tour booked through the cruise line or independently, either by booking shore excursions on your own with a third-party company or exploring the port without a tour?

There's no right or wrong approach. When I think back to my two favorite tours, one was ship-sponsored (a plant-based cooking class with a Rastafarian in Jamaica through Princess Cruises) and the other (a walking and history tour with a lifelong resident in Havana) was independently booked online. On both, I found what I was looking for — a glimpse into local culture.

Consider the pros and cons of both types of shore excursions as you're sifting through the choices on a cruise line's website. And remember: This isn't an all-or-nothing game. You might choose a ship-sponsored tour in select ports or when traveling with certain people but opt to venture out on your own on other trips or in other destinations.

Ship-sponsored tours: Pros

non party cruises

You'll be back to the ship on time

Because everyone on the tour is a passenger on your ship, there is no way the ship will leave without your group back on board. Communications between the shore excursion guide and your ship are tight, and if the tour runs late due to traffic or another reason, the ship will wait for your bus to return.

If the ship's itinerary changes, you won't miss the tour

On one visit to Grand Cayman, high winds forced the ship's tender boats to shuttle passengers to a different pier than originally planned. Thankfully, my plans were fluid — take a taxi to Seven Mile Beach — but had I booked an independent tour, I might have missed the scheduled pickup time due to the new arrival location. Guests who booked a ship's tour were simply picked up at the new arrival point.

The same principle holds true for any itinerary changes that cause you to miss a port or arrive later than planned. Ship-sponsored tours either will adjust to accommodate you or issue you a refund. With independent tours, you're at the mercy of that tour operator's cancellation policies.

Changes to the tour can be made while sailing

A ship's cruise shore excursions desk is for booking — and canceling — tours. If the weather looks bad for the day of your bicycling tour or you've had enough beach time and decided you want something different, you can usually cancel your tour within 48 hours for a refund. (Be sure to check the cruise line's policies.)

It's trickier to change your mind when you have to call or email a third-party provider, and that company may have different cancellation policies.

Bottom line: It's easier to cancel tours on board.

You'll optimize a short stay in port

Ship-sponsored tours usually focus on more than one activity. There's often a restaurant or boutique stop, as well as one or two other highlights. If you're a person who likes to check off lots of boxes, this is ideal.

I recently booked an Alaska shore excursion ("Best of Ketchikan: Totems, Wildlife Cruise & Alaska Appetizers") for a visit to Ketchikan through Princess Cruises that satisfies my love for fresh seafood, sailing and local art — all in the span of a few hours.

Tours are vetted by the cruise lines

Sure, you could pop off the ship and flag down a person holding a sign advertising a tour, but how will you have time to check review sites to make sure they're legit? When booking through the ship, you know the tour has been vetted and, more importantly, endorsed.

I would have been hesitant to hop into a small van and trek up a muddy mountain to a stranger's house in Dominica to learn cooking skills if I hadn't booked through Celebrity Cruises . That excursion was an amazing glimpse into local culture that was made possible by a ship-sponsored tour.

Ship-sponsored tours: Cons

non party cruises

Ship-sponsored tours might offer less physical activity

Although hiking and kayaking outings have been added to ship-sponsored shore tour rosters in recent years, these active excursions cater to the average cruiser and not athletes. What's strenuous to you and what's strenuous to the average Holland America traveler might be completely different. If you're a fitness buff or an experienced hiker, biker and/or kayaker, you might be disappointed.

When choosing tours, consult the activity level for terms like "moderate" or "strenuous," and also look for the number of miles walked, kayaked or biked. That said, I brought up the rear on a Scenic Cruises vineyard bicycling tour in Bordeaux, France, due to the ship's surprisingly active seniors. To go at your own pace, rather than the group's, you're better off on your own.

Groups tend to be large

Instead of a more personalized experience, passengers on some ship-sponsored tours are packed onto motorcoaches with little or no opportunity to engage the guide if they aren't sitting in the first few rows. If possible, look for a tour with a limited number of spots, especially if you'll be walking, so you can interact. A tour guide speaking through a microphone to a completely full catamaran or through a VoxBox headset isn't necessarily intimate.

There's a chance they'll sell out

There's a reason you're advised to pick tours early: They book up. Even if you log into your cruise line's website to book tours the second they open up (which could be at midnight), shipmates in more expensive suites or with higher loyalty program status might have snatched up all the spots on the hottest tours.

Independent options can also book up in advance, but you usually have more choices of operators and flexibility on when to book, so you can find something you like.

Cruise ship tours don't venture off the beaten path

A 5,000-passenger ship can hardly offer three tours with 15 people on each, especially when partnering with the island's most eccentric artist or chef. They have to offer tours en masse to attractions used to handling thousands of travelers each day.

When I dock in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, I hail a taxi to Grand Case on the French side and opt out of ship-sponsored tours. That means I'm not one of 50 people still in line for a pain au chocolat at a bakery while the motorcoach driver tells me I have "five more minutes."

Look to the smaller cruise lines for more options for small-group tours, and know that those excursions are likely to be expensive and sell out quickly.

You're likely to pay more for ship-sponsored tours

Speaking of price, ship-sponsored tours are often more expensive than the same tour offered directly through the operator. That's because the cruise line serves as the middleman and inflates the fees so it can take a cut before it pays the tour company.

Independent tours: Pros

non party cruises

Independent tours take smaller groups

When you sign on to an existing third-party tour, instead of filling up a motorcoach, you will probably be one of fewer than 20 people hopping in a van or spreading out on a bus. Book a private tour for your travel party, and it might be just you and your group.

This small setting allows you to ask a lot of questions and even customize the day's schedule with activities for antsy kids or photo stops at sights of interest. You can slow or quicken the pace and potentially choose what you see.

They're more physically active

A rock-climbing tour probably isn't going to partner with a large cruise ship. People who wish to scale boulders are a small niche of travelers. Even that hike or bike ride offered through the cruise line will be fairly easy. If exerting adrenaline is a must, go off on your own or find a local guide. You can tailor the day's activities to your fitness level and skill and go at your preferred pace.

Independent tours can go to less touristy places

Tour buses stick to the tourist hot spots to accommodate the general interests of first-time visitors. If you've already visited a cruise port before or prefer less-crowded or gimmicky options, you might need to ditch the ship-sponsored tour for a private guide or explore on your own.

Get recommendations from a co-worker, a friend or online travel forums ahead of time. Don't be shy about asking crew members or shop, gallery or restaurant workers for the best conch salad in Nassau in the Bahamas or a locals' beach. You might find yourself gazing out to sea at a family-owned shack by the side of the road while having an amazing local meal or enjoying a quiet strip of sand while your shipmates are herded around in tour buses.

Private cruise excursions cost less or offer more value

As I mentioned earlier, going straight to the tour provider can snag you the same tour your ship is offering for a lower price. Small-group or private tours, on the other hand, tend to be pricier than large-group cruise ship excursions.

However, you'll get better value for your money when you can customize the tour to your preferences or spend more time sightseeing and less time waiting around for other people in your group. If you can get together a group of eight or 10 people, you can split the costs to make a private tour more affordable per person.

Sometimes you don't need a tour

For ports close to a downtown area or the beach, you don't need a tour to enjoy your day. Take a cab to the beach, window shop in town or grab lunch at a local eatery. All you need is a map and some cash.

After lunch on the beach in Bridgetown, Barbados, I took a short taxi downtown, stopped in the locals' version of a dime store and strolled through a farmer's market. I didn't need a guide for that, and I was happy to get away from the tour bus hordes for a few hours.

Independent tours: Cons

non party cruises

You might be out of luck if your itinerary changes

Ship tours will accommodate schedule changes, but that's not always the case with private excursions.

The tour operator might not know that your ship had to head back to its departure port due to a medical emergency or that it changed its docking location or time. It might deem you a no-show and charge your credit card for the tour you missed. Even if you do manage to get in touch, your guide's cancellation policy might not allow last-minute refunds.

Most tour operators catering to cruisers understand that weather patterns can change your ship's itinerary, causing you to arrive on a different day or skip the port completely. Often, their cancellation policies cover these itinerary changes — especially if it's a group tour, rather than a private guide. However, there might not be room to accommodate you on a popular tour on the revised date or arrival.

Bottom line: Ship tours will always accommodate itinerary changes; independent tours don't always.

Related: What happens if my cruise line changes my itinerary or ship?

Unexpected problems can make you miss the ship

Most tour guides catering to cruise passengers are conscientious about getting passengers back to the ship on time, but a traffic jam, bad weather or a medical emergency can derail even the best-laid plans. If a private tour takes longer than projected, the ship likely won't wait, and you could be faced with making your own arrangements to meet back up with the ship or return home.

Independent travel can stress you out

While I love straying from the port and getting away from the hustle and bustle, independent travel can stress me out. On my own, I constantly check the time or fret that the taxi will get a flat tire and I'll miss the ship.

Some people worry when navigating a foreign language without a guide to help translate. Others are concerned about getting lost in an unfamiliar city or fear they're missing out on the cultural and historical context if they can't read signs in another language.

If independent exploration makes you anxious, by all means, sign up for that guided tour. Even if you see less, you'll be happier about the sites you do experience.

You need to do your research

If you walk off the ship and sign up for a tour with the first company you see, you could end up on a dud of a tour because you don't know a thing about the provider or, worse, find yourself in an unsafe situation. Whether you book your guide in advance or make a last-minute game plan on the pier, you are on the hook to do your homework, look up reviews and make sure the provider is legit.

My independent cruise excursion in Havana was memorable because I did the research and booked a guide who earned top ratings on TripAdvisor. But some folks end up disappointed because they book with an unknown company only for the excursion to not live up to their expectations.

“This was perfect for us! Like everyone we met on board, we would not consider a cruise with thousands to be a vacation. We made friends each night in the lounge and it felt like a dinner party. The flexibility of the captain and our guides was a fantastic touch. Being able to go into places where it was just our boat was very special.”  —  Richard L, Kamas, UT

The 9 best party cruises for 2024.

The best party cruises have something fun for everyone.

The Best Party Cruises

You won't be bored on a party cruise.

The magic of a cruise vacation is created with culinary delights, exotic ports of call, comfortable accommodations, carefully curated spaces and, of course, parties. These onboard celebrations can take many forms: large dance parties and quiet lounges, family-friendly and adults-only, adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities, elegant and come-as-you-are events, and entire ships transformed into themed cruises .

Prepare for fun times on the following ships hosting the best party cruises at sea.

Royal Caribbean: Oasis of the Seas

Explore the eastern and western Caribbean aboard Oasis of the Seas , one of the largest cruise ships in the world. On this 6,771-passenger vessel, 18 decks of fun and 2,109 crew members await your next voyage.

  • Bionic Bar: For late-night parties where "mixology meets technology," order cocktails from unexpected bartenders: robots! These two specialized tech creations are well-versed in classic alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, and they can also mix a bespoke drink designed by you.
  • Adrenaline-pumping amenities: Get ready for day and night thrills at four separate venues. Ripcord by iFly is billed as the only skydiving simulator at sea; North Star allows cruisers to snap stunning photos from the tallest viewing deck found on any cruise ship; Sky Pad provides a virtual reality experience while patrons jump on a bungee trampoline; and the Ultimate Abyss, named the tallest slide at sea, plunges 10 stories down.
  • Surprise events: Scattered throughout the ship are several surprise activities that pop up among the scheduled itinerary of events. Join a toga party; boogie at a disco brigade; dress for a masquerade party; or transport back in time at an '80s-inspired extravaganza.

10 Best Party Cruises

1. oasis of the seas.

Oasis of the seas 70s party

Royal Caribbean is known for making some of the most extravagant cruise ships in the world. Recently, I was on the Oasis of the Seas and the party never stopped.

Whether it was at Spotlight Karaoke, The Rising Tide Bar, The Pig & Whistle English Pub or Blaze Night Club, there was always something going on. Having all these entertainment venues, is one of the best things about the Oasis of the Seas cruise ship, because the fun never stops.

If you like live music and dancing, there is the Music Hall. This bar and club has live performances and a dance floor.

During the day, there is the pool deck with many bars, hot tubs, pools and water slides. Hanging out by the pool is a great time and a great way to meet new people.

Another cool thing about the Oasis of the Seas is the amazing Boardwalk neighborhood, with Johnny Rockets and Playmakers sports bar. If you’re into sports, you’ll have the best time watching a sports game at Playmakers.

Tip: Cruising during winter break, spring break and summer vacation are the best ways to ensure that you will be on a fun party cruise.

2. Norwegian Joy

Norwegian Cruise Line tends to cater towards a younger crowd, so if you’re a young adult , you’ll love cruising with Norwegian. Norwegian is one of the best cruise lines for drinking, partying and having fun.

The Norwegian Joy is a newer cruise ship which began sailing in North America in 2019. This cruise ship has plenty of activities onboard including a virtual reality room, water slides and Go-Karting.

Onboard the Norwegian Joy, there is an adult only area called Spice H20 on deck 17, which is inspired by Ibiza. During the day it’s an area to grab a drink and relax, however in the evening it becomes a completely different atmosphere.

In the evening time at Spice H20, you’ll get to party and dance under the stars, something fun and unique about the Norwegian Joy.

Tip: On most cruise lines passengers have to be 21 to drink. Onboard Norwegian, passengers who are 18 years old can consumer beer or wine in international waters with the permission of a parent.

Virgin Voyages is an adult only cruise line that’s doing things differently. The target market for Virgin Voyages are a younger demographic , however active and open minded cruisers of all ages will feel at home.

The Virgin Scarlet Lady has a cool, fun party vibe. This cruise ship has a tattoo parlour onboard and the “Scarlet Night Party”, which is known as one of the best parties at sea.

For the Scarlet Night, cruise passengers or “sailors”, as Virgin calls them, are told to wear red. Scarlet night is a crazy pool party that is loads of fun! As the night progresses, the party moves down into the various bars and clubs around the cruise ship.

The Manor is the Scarlet Lady’s nightclub, which might be the nicest nightclub at sea! The Manor is a two story night club with a dance floor, live music and a DJ.

Since Virgin is an adult only cruise line , this means that there will be no kids. This means that the entertainment onboard is catered towards adults instead of it being family friendly.

5. MSC Meraviglia

The MSC Meraviglia came in 2017. This cruise ship is known for its beautiful two story Infinity atrium, glittering Swarovski staircase and its resort style pool deck. Luckily, MSC tends to be a more affordable cruise line, which attracts a lot of young adults.

Here are some things to expect on this cruise if you like to party:

The TV & Studio bar is an area where you can do karaoke, watch live shows and grab a drink. As it gets later, check out the Meraviglia bar & lounge. This is the night club area where passengers drink, dance and party late into the night.

Overall, the MSC Meraviglia is a fun and beautiful cruise. The great thing about cruising with MSC is that they tend to be very affordable vacation.

Tip: Caribbean and Mexico cruises are fun party cruises as the party continues on the beaches and affordable excursions.

6. Wonder of the Seas

The Wonder of the Seas is the newest ship from Royal Caribbean cruise line , and the largest ship in the world!

This cruise ship is very similar to the Oasis of the Seas, which is in my opinion, the ultimate party cruise. Of course, the Wonder of the Seas is new and there are even more great things to do!

Cruising on the Wonder of the Seas is a great way to travel and have fun while doing it. There is plenty of entertainment, including an Aqua Show.

Whether it’s during the day or in the evening, the party never stops on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas.

7. Carnival Vista

Carnival Cruise Vista

Carnival Cruises are always a good time and the Carnival Vista is no different. This ship first set sail back in 2016, and it is known as an affordable and very fun cruise.

In fact, Carnival Cruise Line includes a lot , and is an amazing value for a vacation.

Since Carnival ships tend to be less expensive, they attract a fun and younger demographic. This means that if you’re a young adult, you’ll have no trouble making friends and finding people to party with in the evening time.

On the Carnival Vista, there is the Sky Box Sports Bar, which is a really nice place to watch sports game and have drinks. In the evening, Sky Box turns into a night club with a live DJ and a dance floor.

There are also deck parties, which are outdoor pool parties, with dancing and more.

During the day you can grab drinks at the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar, the poolside bar. This is a great place to have a cocktail and relax by the pool.

Overall, the Carnival Vista is one of the best cruise ships to party at sea. The various bars, entertainment venues and the fun atmosphere makes for a really good time.

8. Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian cruise Breakaway

When I originally went on the Norwegian Breakaway, I was still a teenager and not old enough to drink. However, one thing I do remember is that the party never stopped.

On the Norwegian Breakaway, there are so many fun activities and there is a great night life. The entertainment and activities, and even the cruise director and staff are very high energy.

Bliss is the night club onboard the Norwegian Breakaway. and it is an absolute blast. With great music from the DJ, a dance floor and bar, you can’t ask for more!

As it gets later, the Norwegian Breakaway, many cruise passengers stop in at O’Sheehans, which is placed conveniently near the Bliss night club. O’Sheehans is a bar and grill that serves wings, burgers and nachos 24-hours a day.

One thing that is super unique about the Norwegian Breakaway, is that there is an ice bar (it’s actually really cold!), where your actual glass, the chairs and decor are made of ice. The Ice Bar is a popular attraction onboard the Norwegian Breakaway, so be sure to check it out.

Tip: If you’re planning on drinking on your cruise, consider purchasing a beverage package as it can cost well over $10 per drink on a cruise!

9. Anthem of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is known for amazing attractions like indoor sky diving, rock climbing and bumper cars. With these amazing activities onboard, the Anthem of the Seas tends to attract young people who are looking for a good time.

The Anthem of the Seas is one of the largest ships in the world, with over 4,000 passengers. Generally, those who cruise with Royal Caribbean are either younger or, as I like to say, young at heart.

The vibe on the Anthem of the Seas is fun and everyone onboard is looking to have a great vacation.

In the evening, there are plenty of amazing shows going on that are worth seeing. From production shows, guest entertainers and comedians, Royal Caribbean is known for its outstanding entertainment.

Later at night, the party often starts in Boleros, the latin themed night club. Going to the night club is the perfect way to party and meet people, dance and have a great time.

10. Norwegian Escape

The Norwegian Escape came out in 2015, but is a favorite cruise ship for many! This cruise ship has water slides, a ropes course and many bars.

When it comes to getting drinks, there is Cellars wine bar, the Skyline Bar, which is the casino bar and the Atrium Bar, which is a great place to grab a drink and socialize with people.

The Skyline Bar is where most of the partying and dancing happens later at night.

Similarly to the Norwegian Breakaway, the Norwegian Escape has O’Sheehans, a great place to eat grab a bite to eat late at night with friends.

The Norwegian Escape is a very cool ship with plenty of activities to do. There are fun things going on throughout the day and the party goes late into the evening.

Tip: Checkout themed cruises which can be party cruises for people of all ages. Some popular ones that are known for their adult parties include Groove Cruise and Temptations (swingers cruise).

The 9 Best Party Cruise Ships

author image

See recent posts by Jason Leppert

Depending on your travel style, how you choose to party on the high seas can mean a million different things. We've rounded up a wide array of cruise ships for every kind of traveler. To start with, you'll find classic ships for cruisers looking to party spring-break style. Expect bumping dance music, lots of nightclub action, and hosted daytime pool parties. To even things out, we've also found the ships that are best for travelers who like to mix high-octane adventure with their party antics, and even some family-friendly party ships. Read on for our nine favorite party cruise ships, from Carnival to Disney and everything in between. It's a party on the high seas.

Cruising for the first time? Make sure you don't let these cruise travel disasters happen to you!

1. Carnival Fantasy

The Main Pool on the Carnival Fantasy/Oyster

Wondering which cruise line is best for partying? Well, we found it. Carnival Cruises are hands-down the way to go for those seeking a tried-and-true cruise party experience. For starters, the cruise line has its own DJ academy that’s run by famous Las Vegas and Miami DJs. The brand essentially gave birth to the party cruise with its “Fun Ship” fleet, and the Carnival Fantasy is the most senior of those. In fact, there are a total of eight Fantasy-class sister ships that are commonly deployed on shorter weekend getaway cruises. That makes these the perfect length cruises for travelers who want to party, but not spend too many of their vacation days. Interiors are bright and colorful throughout the ships, including the the bars and nightclubs. The Fantasy itself features the line’s latest BlueIguana Tequila Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar, as well as a nightclub and theme party nights. Is this a peaceful weekend getaway? Likely not. But if you’re looking to live your wildest life, the Carnival Fantasy is for you.

2. Carnival Vista

The Beach Pool on Carnival Vista/Oyster

If you’re seeking Carnival’s slightly more refined side, the Carnival Vista may be more your speed. All the fun is still here, but the formerly flashy decor of previous ships is swapped for a more subtle beach resort aesthetic. You’ll find brand staples like BlueIguana Cantina, along with the pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar and RedFrog Pub & Brewery offer beers that are brewed right onboard. Aside from the bars and clubs, parties are hosted at the outdoor pool deck and indoors at the Liquid Lounge. Check your cruise itinerary for theme nights, so you know which outfits to pack.

3. Norwegian Escape

Jimmy Buffett’s Magaritaville at Sea on Norwegian Escape/Oyster

Norwegian Cruise Line channels Jimmy Buffett to create the relaxed party atmosphere aboard the Norwegian Escape . The musician’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar and Margaritaville at Sea embody his philosophy of partaking in the good life. Still, passengers can get their blood pumping again with all sorts of high-octane activities. There are thrilling waterslides plus a challenging ropes course to enjoy. Broadway-worthy productions in the Stardust Theater are also thrilling. And then there are the themed parties (like the wildly popular Glow Party), which you’ll learn more about just below.

4. Norwegian Pearl

Comedy and Dancing on Norwegian Pearl/Oyster

In addition to the Norwegian Escape, the Norwegian Pearl is party central. For starters, many music festivals come to the ship, giving guests a chance to listen in on multiple live sets as well as mingle with their favorite artists. The expansive pool deck and concert-friendly Stardust Theater also make great live-entertainment venues. However, Norwegian is perhaps most famous for its themed party nights. These include Latin Night, ’70s and ’80s nights, and the Glow Party — where black lights, club music, and neon are guaranteed to make the night memorable.

5. Harmony of the Seas

Royal Promenade on Harmony of the Seas/Oyster

If you’re after a cruise ship that’s really more of a floating city, you’d do well to check out the ships of the Royal Caribbean International line. Specifically, the Harmony of the Seas . It’s one of the largest at sea, and has almost too many venues, restaurants, and bars to count. How big is the Harmony of the Seas? Well, for starters, its central Royal Promenade is big enough to host parades, and its Studio B is a multipurpose hub of activity complete with a genuine ice rink. This one even has an escape room experience — Escape the Rubicon — as well as the thrilling Ultimate Abyss spiral dry slide and AquaTheater, with performers executing all sorts of cool acrobatics and aerials. Harmony of the Seas also has a bevy of bars to keep your thirst at bay, including a robot bar and a nightclub with a light-up dance floor.

6. Anthem of the Seas

The North Star Bar on Anthem of the Seas/Oyster

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is another ship that mixes party-ready elements (like a dizzying number of bars) with cool thrills for those who get their kicks in more visceral ways. Or maybe you love both! Let’s start with the booze. Like sister ship Harmony of the Seas, you’ll find the Bionic Bar on board, where robots stir and shake all types of boozy concoctions to shockingly solid reviews. There’s also the North Star, which allows you to sip cocktails while dangling way above the cruise deck. For cruisers who prefer some action, check out the line’s signature FlowRider surf simulator as well as the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator (which is especially fun lit up in neon at night). For milder, kid-friendly fun, head to the SeaPlex. Here you’ll find a video game lounge, bumper car arena, roller rink, circus school, and dance club.

7. Disney Fantasy

Disney Fantasy character show/Courtesy of Jason Leppert

It will come as absolutely no surprise that when it comes to family party time, Disney Cruise Line takes the cake. And its Disney Fantasy ship just so happens to pack in the most fun for travelers on its weeklong voyages. You can expect Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and other recognizable Disney characters at sea, which is guaranteed to please the youngest cruisers. Best of all, the line does a fine job of providing something for everyone. Families can catch stage shows, film screenings, and opt for themed dining, as well as ride the AquaDuck water coaster and play at the AquaLab. Kid-centric destinations onboard include the Midship Detective Agency or Disney’s Oceaneer Club — where the little ones will get character visits and access to games and toys. Adults can head to Europa for The Tube nightclub or La Piazza, Ooh La La, O’Gills Pub, and Skyline bars.

8. Disney Wonder

Tiana's Place, Disney Wonder/Courtesy of Jason Leppert

The Disney Wonder may be smaller than the Fantasy, but you’ll still find plenty of family-fun party activites on board. Those include its own AquaLab interactive water park., as well as a long line-up of deck performances (including one helmed by Mickey Mouse as your ship departs port). Fireworks and pirates are also cruisers favorites. When it comes to dining, the Disney Wonder excels, especially at Tiana’s Place, a restaurant inspired by “The Princess and the Frog.” Here, a live jazz band and parade accompany your southern-inspired meals. Of course, big hits with kids include the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Frozen Adventures, which are both part of Disney’s Oceaneer Club. No Disney Wonder cruise would be complete without a visit from Queen Elsa and Princess Anna during the family-friendly “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular.”

9. Queen Mary 2

non party cruises

While it may not come to mind as a party ship at first, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is a wonderful option for those who want to step back in time. This ocean liner is all about creating an elegant vintage vibe, with its formal dress code and live big-band music. The ship attracts a more mature crowd than you’d find on Carnival’s ships, and far fewer families than the Disney cruises. It also has an incredibly high price tag, with luxury dining venues and the world’s only at-sea planetarium. Itineraries can be incredibly long and are often booked as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure (including around-the-world sailings). When it comes to entertainment, expect everything from Broadway-style revues to Shakespeare.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
