Adults over 18 travelling up to and including 30 April 2022 must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to their holiday.

The line details: "Fully vaccinated can be either two doses of the currently approved COVID-19 vaccines or the single-dose Janssen COVID-19 vaccine (approved by MHRA or WHO EUL)."

Children aged 17 and under travelling to the Caribbean must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to the cruise while kids aged five to 17 sailing to all countries excluding the Caribbean and Mediterranean have the option to be fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to the holiday or provide a negative PCR result prior to sailing.

Little ones aged four and under travelling to all countries excluding the Caribbean, and children between five and eleven sailing to the Mediterranean, are able to travel providing parents/guardians meet the vaccine requirements

Passengers are required to show proof of vaccination status at the terminal before boarding, which will also be checked against their photo ID. This can be either in digital or printed format.

Do you need a Covid test for a P&O cruise?

All guests will require a negative COVID-19 test at the cruise terminal - provided free of charge.

P&O stipulates: "If you’re travelling with children aged between five and 17 years old who aren’t vaccinated, they will need to take a PCR test within 120 hours prior to travelling to the terminal (again, this will be complimentary).

"Please register with our service provider, Prenetics, and order a PCR pre-cruise testing kit for every unvaccinated guest aged between five and 17 years on your booking. Registration opens five weeks before sailing and closes six days before your embarkation date."

As for those flying to the Caribbean, guests setting sail in Southampton, "will complete a complimentary antigen test at the terminal and must pay for a PCR test on board within three days prior to arrival in Barbados."

Do you need travel insurance for a P&O holiday?

All UK guests must have comprehensive cruise-specific travel insurance when they sail with P&O.

Insurance must include medical cover of £2million minimum and cover for emergency evacuations and medical expenses related to COVID-19.

You must also ensure your policy includes cover for repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and full cover for any and all pre-existing medical conditions worldwide, or as a minimum, in the countries you are due to visit.

"You’ll be asked to confirm you have travel insurance at the terminal/airport and you may need to provide proof of your policy," said P&O. Without this you risk being denied boarding.

Do you need to wear a face mask on P&O Cruises?

Guests are required to wear a face mask that covers their nose and mouth (with no exemptions) in specific areas including the terminal, when moving around indoors on board and when seated in the theatre.

P&O says: "You’re free to remove your mask when seated elsewhere around the ship, when out on deck and when exercising. We’d always recommend you regularly clean your masks and choose a good quality, ideally medical grade, standard.

"Please note that visors and face shields aren’t accepted as a substitute for a face mask."

What life is like onboard P&O ships

Do you need to social distance on a p&o cruise.

Social distancing "should be practised throughout your holiday," explain P&O Cruises.

You're recommended to "keep a physical distance of at least one metre from guests outside of your travelling party."

The line asks travellers to not be in their cabin at the same time as the stewards cleaning the rooms. P&O also encourage guests to avoid using public toilets where possible (although these will be available).

Is there a buffet on P&O cruise ships?

The buffets and deck grills are available but they may be served by members of staff.

Restaurants and bars are all open but you will just need to pre-book a table in the restaurants or join a virtual queue while staff prepare your table.

Can I go on shore excursions alone with P&O Cruises?

Guests can go to shore independently but must adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

P&O recommends purchasing shore excursions prior to travel to ensure you have the option to explore each city.

If for some reason the ship is no longer able to visit a certain port, they will spend another day at another port.

Are there muster drills on P&O cruise ships?

Muster drills are currently being carried out virtually. Passengers are directed to their muster station upon boarding the ship but emergency processes will be available to view via the safety video in cabins rather than in-person.

"The drills will include important health, well-being and safety information as well as the actions you would need to take in the unlikely event of an emergency, including a life jacket demonstration," says P&O.

The nursery and night nursery will not be in operation.

What's more, some spa facilities such as the Hydrotherapy pools and sauna may not be available. P&O advises visiting the spa reception for the latest updates.

Can I go on a cruise without being vaccinated or take a pre-boarding test?

Cruise lines are starting to change their rules. here’s what you need to know.

p and o cruises unvaccinated

M ost major cruise lines still require passengers to be fully vaccinated, including having the relevant booster jabs. Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International, for example, are all headquartered in the US, which means they must follow the guidelines set out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), even when they sail outside of the country. Vaccine requirements are starting to change, however. The CDC updated its guidelines on July 18 so that vaccination is no longer a requirement — instead, it’s merely recommended. A number of cruise lines have reviewed their policies following the change. Here’s what you need to know.

The current rules on the major ocean cruise lines

Note that in some cases, the restrictions may depend on your departure point and the ship’s home port so always check before sailing. Vaccines are also required to be administered at least 14 days prior to travel.

Azamara Passengers no longer need to take pre-travel Covid tests except where required by local restrictions. All passengers over the age of 12 must be fully vaccinated. Booster jabs are required where eligible and are considered effective immediately. However, from December 1, Azamara will no longer require proof of vaccination for sailings starting and ending in the US or sailings starting and ending in Europe. All other sailings require proof of vaccination and booster until further notice.

Carnival Cruise Line Only passengers on sailings to Canada, Bermuda, Greece and Australia, plus cruises of 16 nights or more, need to be fully vaccinated. Vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers can go on all other cruises, with unvaccinated guests showing proof of a negative PCR or antigen test taken within three days of embarkation. Pre-boarding tests are not required for vaccinated guests.

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Cruises has different vaccine requirements for different destinations so do double check. Passengers sailing from the UK, Europe (except Iceland) and the US (Los Angeles only) don’t need to be vaccinated. However, a pre-travel Covid test is required for those who are unvaccinated. A pre-travel Covid test is still required for all sailings longer than six nights. For passengers sailing from Canada and Bermuda, all passengers over 12 must be vaccinated. For the Galapagos Islands, anyone over the age of three must be vaccinated. Boosters are not required but are recommended. Those over the age of two will need a pre-embarkation Covid test.

The Beachcomber bar and pool on P&O’s Iona

Cunard All passengers above the age of 12 must be fully vaccinated; those between five and 11 who are unvaccinated will be permitted to board but will be subject to additional testing. Self-testing is “highly recommended” but no longer mandatory prior to boarding on the majority of sailings. Only passengers on cruises of more than 16 nights and a number of more complex itineraries will need to take a test prior to travel.

Marella Cruises Passengers aged 12 and over must be fully vaccinated for more than 14 days. There is no longer a requirement for pre-cruise testing on Marella. The only exception is Greece; under Greek law, all customers need to be tested by a medical professional before boarding the ship. This will impact anyone embarking on the ship in Corfu and guests will need to purchase and complete an antigen test the day before boarding.

MSC Cruises All passengers over 18 need to be fully vaccinated. Guests in this age group on short cruises of less than five nights do not have to take a pre-boarding test, although the line recommends they get tested. Anyone on sailings of six nights or longer will have to be tested, whether or not they are vaccinated. Children over the age or two must take a PCR or antigen test within 48 hours before embarkation.

Oceania Cruises Fully vaccinated passengers aged 12 and older don’t need a test to embark. Unvaccinated travellers need to present the results of a medically administered PCR or antigen test taken less than 72 hours before boarding. Younger passengers are not subject to any vaccination requirements or testing protocols.

P&O Cruises Passengers over 12 need to be fully vaccinated while those over 16 will need a booster at least seven days before travel if they’re eligible. Pre-departure testing is “highly recommended” rather than mandatory. Only passengers sailing on longer voyages of 16 nights or more, or more complex sailings, will need to have an observed or in person PCR or antigen test.

Princess Cruises Princess Cruises will accept unvaccinated passengers with advance booking (there’s a capacity cap of ten per cent) but you may be prevented from disembarking at certain destinations depending on the local restrictions in place. Generally everyone over the age of four will need to be vaccinated and pre-travel testing requirements vary according to departure port and your vaccine status.

Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas in Sydney, Australia (Alamy)

Royal Caribbean The requirements can vary between ports but on the whole, Royal Caribbean requires all passengers over the age of 12 to be fully vaccinated. On European sailings, this includes booster jabs where eligible. All guests over the age of two will need a pre-departure Covid test.

Vaccination is not required for sailings from the USA (California, Louisiana, or Texas) and Europe. Be aware though that your vaccination status can still affect whether you can go onshore. And if you’re unvaccinated, you’ll have to take a Covid test before you travel.

Viking All passengers need to be fully vaccinated to sail on the adult-only line. Viking recommends, but does not require, passengers to take a pre-departure test.

vikingcruises.co.uk

Virgin Voyages The adult-only Virgin Voyages requires 90 per cent of its guests to be fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated passengers must call ahead to confirm whether there’s capacity for them to board. Pre-travel testing is no longer required.

virginvoyages.com

Virgin Voyages’ Aquatic Club

Windstar Cruises All guests must be vaccinated. Embarking guests don’t have to take a pre-boarding test.

The current rules on river cruise lines

At present most river lines, including AmaWaterways, Avalon, Emerald Cruises, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking, require passengers to be fully vaccinated. The only exception is A-Rosa where there is no longer any obligation to provide proof of vaccination. However, the line recommends passengers carry out a self-test before boarding.

Pre-boarding testing for other lines is mainly dependent on the current requirements in the country of embarkation and passengers should check with their line prior to travel.

How do I show my vaccine record?

You can download the NHS app and fill in your details. This will create QR codes that prove your vaccination status. If you don’t have a mobile phone, you can fill in the form online and print them.

The latest Covid restrictions for cruise holidays explained, from vaccination to testing

Cruise lines are beginning to drop or ease their covid-related rules for passengers – we look at the regulations among major operators.

Amazing evening landscape of Fira, infinity pool caldera view Santorini, Greece with cruise ships at sunset. Cloudy dramatic sky sunset, wonderful summer scenery, travel vacation, holiday. Inspire

Cruise holidays bore the initial brunt of the pandemic travel chaos. The spread of Covid-19 across large vessels made headline news around the world.

It was no surprise then that when they were gradually granted permission to restart operations across much of the world, cruise lines enforced strict new procedures. These included requirements for full vaccination, regular testing, mask wearing and social distancing.

Now, as tens of countries have dropped all Covid-related entry rules, cruise companies are becoming more lenient. Alongside the requirements of each cruise line, passengers should keep in mind entry stipulations of the countries to which they are travelling. Visit gov.uk to see information on the rules for each country. Your cruise line should provide information when booking, and in the run-up to, a voyage. Here are the top line requirements of major cruise lines.

Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador continues its policy of requiring all guests to be fully vaccinated and stipulates that this includes two doses, plus a booster dose, for over-18s. Children aged 12-17 must have received two doses, but children aged 0-11 do not need to be vaccinated to travel with Ambassador. A Covid-19 test is also required before departure for guests aged five and over. Ambassador offers home testing kits. See more information .

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival eased rules on 6 September. Passengers on cruises of more than 16 nights or which sail to Australia, Bermuda, Canada or Greece must be fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated passengers are permitted on all other voyages, they must, however, have tested negative for Covid-19 no more than 72 hours before boarding and be ready to present proof of the result. See more information .

Celebrity Cruises

Passengers can sail with Celebrity, regardless of their vaccination status, on cruises departing from European and US ports. Vaccinations rules still apply for voyages to Canada and Bermuda. Fully vaccinated passengers do not need to test before or during their cruise if the cruise is for nine nights or fewer; they have three days prior to departure to test for sailings of 10 days or more. Unvaccinated guests aged five or over will need to take a test within the three days before boarding US sailings; the same rule applies for unvaccinated guests aged 12 or over for some European sailings. See more information .

Passengers aged 18 and over must be fully vaccinated to sail with Cunard. For most people, full vaccination will require a booster dose as they will not be considered fully vaccinated if the final dose was received more than 270 days since the last day of the cruise. The most recent dose must have been received at least seven days before travel. Guests aged 17 or under are not required to be fully vaccinated.

However, if those aged five to 17 are not fully vaccinated, they must take a Covid-19 lateral flow or PCR test within the three days before travel. Vaccination and testing requirements do not apply to children under five. These are the rules for standard voyages, but some come with additional requirements. See more information.

Disney Cruise Line

All passengers aged 12 or over are required to be fully vaccinated for sailings departing from the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. From 23 September, fully vaccinated passengers on US sailings on board Disney Wonder, Dream, Fantasy and Wish will no longer be required to take a test before departure. Unvaccinated passengers aged 11 and younger will need to take a NAAT or PCR Covid-19 test one to three days before departure. See more information .

Holland America

As of 6 September, guests do not need to be fully vaccinated for cruises under 16 days, that do not visit Bermuda, Canada or Australia. However, guests of cruises of 16 days or more must be fully vaccinated. Passengers who are not full vaccinated must take a test within 72 hours prior to departure. All passengers are required to take a pre-cruise test for sailings of 16 days or more. See more information .

Royal Caribbean

The rules differ depending on where you are taking a cruise. As of 5 September, unvaccinated guests are welcome on all Royal Caribbean sailings, except for those to and from Australia, Canada, Bermuda or Singapore. Guests on remaining transatlantic sailings in 2022 will need to be fully vaccinated. To meet Royal Caribbean’s requirements, fully vaccinated means two doses of an approved vaccine received at least 28 days apart with the second dose administered at least 14 days before departure.

Fully vaccinated guests do not need to have a Covid-19 test before boarding. Those who are unvaccinated must provide a negative Covid-19 test result. See more information .

P&O Cruises

All guests aged 18 or over must be fully vaccinated, including a booster if the second dose was received more than 270 days before the last day of the cruise. Pre-departure testing is no longer a requirement for fully vaccinated guests but is still recommended.

Guests aged 17 and under do not need to be fully vaccinated to sail with P&O Cruises. Unvaccinated guests aged five to 17 must take a test within the three days before, or on the day of, departure. A test certificate is no longer required, but you may be asked to show photo evidence of your negative test. Children aged four and under are exempt from all vaccination and testing requirements. See more information .

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises now permits unvaccinated passengers to sail on its ships except on cruises of 16 days or more or on those where local regulations prohibit it; voyages where unvaccinated guests are not permitted include those to Australia, Canada and Greece. Unvaccinated passengers aged two or over must provide a negative test result from a test taken no more than three days before embarkation where they are permitted to join a cruise. See more information .

Marella Cruises

Guests aged 12 or over must be fully vaccinated to sail with Marella. Those aged 18 or over who received the second dose of a vaccine more than 270 days ago must have had their booster to be considered fully vaccinated. Testing requirements may apply, but vary depending on the cruise. See more information .

MSC Cruises

UK passengers aged 18 or over boarding MSC Cruises (and 12 or over for cruises departing from the US) must be fully vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19, and all guests aged two or older must submit a negative Covid-19 test result prior to boarding. See more information .

Oceania has eased its requirements and, since 3 September, passengers do not need to show proof of vaccination for sailings from most ports. Additionally, fully vaccinated guests and under-12s do not need to take a Covid-19 test before departure. Unvaccinated passengers aged 12 or over must take a pre-cruise test. See more information .

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line updated its vaccination requirements on 3 September. All guests are permitted on its cruises, regardless of vaccination status. However, passengers may be affected by the travel requirements of individual countries. Unvaccinated guests aged 12 or over are required to show proof of a medically supervised negative PCR or antigen test taken no more than 72 hours before embarkation. Children aged 11 or under are not required to show proof of a negative test. See more information .

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas relaxed its rules on 3 September and unvaccinated guests may now sail with proof of a negative test. Fully vaccinated guests aged 12 or over and all guests aged 11 or under do not need a pre-departure test. These rules are subject to local restrictions. See more information .

Viking requires all guests to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 at least 14 days before travel; this requires a full vaccine course, although a booster is recommended before departure. A Covid-19 test is recommended before departure for all voyages; on some in the US and Canada it is required. See more information .

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages requires 90 per cent of its guests to be vaccinated and leaves 10 per cent of its space open for unvaccinated guests. Unvaccinated guests must apply for a vaccine exemption to sail on the ship. The cruise line’s sailings are all adults-only. See more information .

All guests aged 18 or over on sailings up until 31 December 2022 must be fully vaccinated to travel with Uniworld. Unvaccinated passengers aged 17 or under are also permitted, but for sailings in 2022 they must provide a negative PCR or antigen test result taken within 72 hours of departure. Vaccine and testing rules will be dropped in 2023. See more information .

Do I need a COVID vaccine to cruise? A line-by-line guide

Ashley Kosciolek

When the first cruises allowing Americans restarted in spring 2021, all major lines were sailing with at least 90% of passengers vaccinated against COVID-19. That meant they required just about everyone on board to have their shots, with only a few exceptions allowed for young children and people who can't be vaccinated due to medical conditions or religious beliefs.

Since then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has withdrawn its opt-in guidance for cruise lines, and most are now allowing unvaccinated passengers to sail. In fact, most aren't even checking to see if cruisers are vaccinated or not.

However, with cases picking up seasonally and new booster vaccines rolling out, will you need a vaccine to cruise? Click on your favorite cruise line above, under "Jump to Section," to find out.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

Note: In order to be considered "fully vaccinated," passengers must have received their final shot (not including boosters) at least 15 days prior to embarkation. Most lines only accept vaccines (or a combination of vaccines) recognized and approved by the World Health Organization and the CDC. Generally, proof of inoculation must include your name, the type of vaccine you received and the dates on which you received all required doses.

Booster shots are not required unless specifically noted. However, keep in mind that the rules may vary by country, with some lines requiring boosters for international departures due to local regulations or for extra-long sailings like ocean crossings when port calls are few or nonexistent. Passengers who have their boosters are considered "up to date" rather than merely "fully vaccinated."

For general information on testing, please refer to our article on cruise testing requirements .

Vaccine required no.

AmaWaterways no longer requires proof of vaccination for passengers. However, cruisers are responsible for meeting the requirements of the countries in which they'll be traveling. Testing requirements vary by location and might depend on whether or not you are up to date on your shots. If vaccination or testing is required, the line will alert cruisers approximately 30 days prior to their sailing date.

Royal Caribbean

To board Royal Caribbean ships, you don't have to be vaccinated or provide test results. However, the line advises staying up to date on inoculations and following guidelines issued by federal health authorities.

Saga has rolled back its vaccination and testing requirements, which is significant, given that the line only allows passengers 50 and older to sail on its vessels. They will only be required if local authorities dictate them.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Passengers embarking on river and ocean voyages with Scenic will not need to be fully immunized prior to sailing. Testing is not required by the line but might be needed to enter the country in which you're embarking on your sailing. Passengers are responsible for meeting entry requirements.

For cruises with luxury line Seabourn , there are no line-enforced regulations for vaccination or testing unless required by local authorities in the countries on which its vessels call. To see if your booked sailing requires either of these, check out the line's search tool .

Luxury brand Silversea does not require shots for its passengers or pre-cruise tests unless they're needed to meet local regulations.

Star Clippers

Star Clippers has eliminated all vaccine checks and testing protocols for all passengers on all voyages.

For all voyages through 2023, Tauck requires passengers 12 and older to be fully vaccinated and have at least one booster dose and/or show proof of recovery from COVID-19. Passengers 11 years old and younger are not required to be fully vaccinated. If they aren't fully vaccinated or don't have a booster, they must provide proof of a negative PCR or antigen test result from a test taken no more than three days prior to embarkation. For sailings in 2024, vaccination and testing requirements will be waived for all passengers.

UnCruise Adventures

All UnCruise passengers are exempt from vaccine and testing requirements. The line will continue to monitor the effects of new variants, as well as CDC recommendations and will adjust its policies accordingly.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection

Testing requirements are determined by the countries the ships visit, but the line itself has no vaccine or testing mandates of its own. You can check the protocols for the places on your itinerary for the most up-to-date information by visiting the protocols page on Uniworld's website .

All Viking passengers, whether on a river sailing or an ocean voyage, must be fully vaccinated for sailings departing on or before Oct. 31, 2023. It will not be required for cruisers embarking on or after Nov. 1, 2023. Testing is no longer required unless passengers are exhibiting symptoms and seek medical assistance.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages will not check proof of immunization or a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar no longer mandates shots for passengers of any age. Testing is not required by the line but might be necessary based on local regulations, which with passengers must comply.

UK’s largest cruise liner P&O bans unvaccinated holidaymakers from staycation cruises

p and o cruises unvaccinated

The UK’ s largest cruise line has said it will not allow unvaccinated holidaymakers aboard its “ staycation ” voyages this summer.

P&O Cruises has said it will run two cruise ships around the UK this summer but that only residents who have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine will be permitted onboard.

Failure to provide proof of the jabs, which guests must have had at least seven days in advance, “will result in denial of boarding”, the company added.

The move comes after Saga Cruises and Virgin Voyages in the US made similar announcements.

The firm said this is a decision that is a “strong expressed preference on the part of our guests.”

Cruise holidays are traditionally popular with older people, who have been prioritised in the UK ’s vaccination programme.

So far more than 24 million people in the country have received at least one dose of a vaccine - making the programme one of the biggest inoculation schemes the country has ever launched.

P&O will also require passengers to wear masks in certain areas of the ship, and will make travel insurance mandatory.

The ship will undergo enhanced cleaning regimes and social distancing, while buffet food will be served by staff.

The cruise line, which is part of the Carnival group, will run cruises departing from Southampton between June and September, sailing around the UK’s coastline.

The Britannia will cruise from Southampton along the south coast of England for three or four days, and the Iona will travel up to Scotland from Southampton for seven-day trips. The itineraries do not include stops at any ports, apart from one Britannia sailing which will visit Liverpool.

Covid: Unvaccinated holidaymakers banned from P&O staycation cruises

p and o cruises unvaccinated

Unvaccinated holidaymakers will be banned from summer staycation sailings operated by P&O Cruises this summer.

Only UK residents who have received both doses of a coronavirus vaccine at least seven days in advance will be permitted onboard, the UK’s largest cruise line said.

Failure to provide proof of the jabs “will result in denial of boarding”, the firm warned.

This is a “strong expressed preference on the part of our guests”, it added.

Other measures introduced due to the pandemic include requiring passengers to wear masks in certain areas of the ship, and making travel insurance mandatory.

There will also be enhanced cleaning regimes and social distancing, while buffet food will be served by staff.

Cruise holidays are traditionally popular with older people, who have been prioritised in the UK’s vaccination programme.

Saga Cruises has previously announced it will require all guests to be vaccinated when it resumes operations in June.

P&O Cruises will operate a series of short breaks on Britannia, while new ship Iona will conduct seven-night itineraries.

Cruises will depart from Southampton between June and September, sailing around the UK’s coastline in search of good weather.

The itineraries do not include stops at any ports, apart from one Britannia sailing which will visit Liverpool.

For her maiden voyage, Iona will anchor off the small Scottish island after which she was named, until sunset.

The Government has advised people to avoid all cruises since July 9, 2020, due to the virus crisis.

But maritime minister Robert Courts told MPs last week that domestic cruises could be permitted from May 17.

P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “Given recent announcements we have every hope that our guests will be able to enjoy a holiday this summer.

“After the stresses and challenges of the past year everyone certainly deserves a treat and this series of cruises will provide memorable and much-needed UK getaways.

“Whilst there is still uncertainty about holidays abroad this summer, we are delighted to be able to offer our guests the ultimate escape here in the UK with the reassurance that we will take care of everything.

“Also, we really will look at the weather forecast each cruise and aim to take our ships where it is warm and sunny.”

The Government’s Global Travel Taskforce will provide a report to Prime Minister Boris Johnson on April 12 setting out recommendations for how and when foreign holidays could resume.

They could be permitted for people in England from May 17 under the Prime Minister’s road map for easing restrictions.

Turkey announced on Monday that it expects to welcome UK holidaymakers this summer without requiring proof of a coronavirus vaccine or negative test.

Greece will require international tourists to have been vaccinated, had a recent negative Covid-19 test or have coronavirus antibodies, while visitors to Cyprus must have had both doses of a vaccine.

Cruise Vaccination Requirements: What You Need to Know

What to know before you book your vacation on the high seas.

p and o cruises unvaccinated

A cruise can be a fun way to visit certain areas of the world at a slower pace. Before embarking on a cruise, it's important to know what the cruise vaccine requirements are, which can vary by cruise line.

Sometimes, you can board a cruise ship without being vaccinated for illnesses like COVID. However, specific policies vary, and sometimes people who are unvaccinated have extra requirements. Here's what you need to know about vaccinations and going on a cruise.

CDC Guidelines on Cruising

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends having up-to-date routine vaccines—which can vary by age, health, and history of vaccinations—before cruising. Those routine vaccines might be for conditions or germs such as:

  • Chickenpox or shingles
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

Other recommendations for people who plan to cruise include:

  • Checking with the cruise line for protocols on pre-board testing and vaccination.
  • Checking your airline's protocols around testing, mask-wearing, vaccination, or quarantining if you're flying before or after the cruise
  • Consulting with a healthcare provider or travel health specialist to determine which vaccines or medicines you need to get before you travel
  • Getting travel insurance in case you need medical care while traveling
  • Monitoring yourself for symptoms of any illness after the trip and avoiding others during your illness
  • Talking to a healthcare provider about the risks of traveling if you have a weakened immune system

Do You Need To Be Vaccinated To Go on a Cruise?

Most major cruise lines do not require guests to be vaccinated unless they're traveling from or to a destination that requires it. Still, there are exceptions. Some cruise lines encourage vaccination even though they don't require it. Some may also require pre-board testing for unvaccinated people .

4 Cruises That Require Vaccines

The following cruise lines require vaccines for travel based on certain factors:

  • Costa Cruises : You should get vaccines as required by the destination(s) you intend to visit, though COVID vaccines are unnecessary.
  • Holland America Line: Influenza vaccination is recommended, while other required vaccinations will vary based on the destination.
  • MSC Cruises : You must be vaccinated according to what's necessary or appropriate for visiting your destination.
  • Virgin Voyages : COVID vaccines are not required when sailing on the Valiant Lady and Scarlet Lady ships. However, yellow fever vaccination may be necessary for travel to Australia from a country at risk for the illness.

8 Cruises That Do Not Require Vaccines

Vaccination may not be a requirement, with some caveats, for these cruise lines:

  • American Queen Voyages : COVID vaccination and testing are no longer required.
  • Carnival Cruise Line :  The cruise line does not require vaccination and pre-board testing. Still, the cruise line encourages guests 5 and up to do both.
  • Celebrity Cruises :  Vaccination isn't a requirement except if you'd be sailing to certain locations requiring vaccination. The website lists some of those locations.
  • Disney Cruises :  For sailings leaving from the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Disney doesn't require guests to be vaccinated unless they enter a country that requires it. However, the cruise line highly recommends that guests become fully vaccinated before sailing. Guests aren't required to take a pre-board test, but Disney encourages them.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line :  Guests do not have to test or be vaccinated against COVID except if entering a country requiring testing or COVID and other vaccinations.
  • Princess Cruises :  Guests do not have to test or be vaccinated unless they sail on a few "enhanced guidelines voyages." The company lists those trips on its website.
  • Royal Caribbean :  Vaccination isn't a requirement unless you're traveling to or from places that require it. The company lists those destinations.
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises : COVID vaccinations are not required, depending on the destination.

Benefits of Pre-Cruise Vaccination

Getting vaccinations before going on a cruise has its benefits. They help protect you and others from getting sick from germs like viruses. Other benefits are a reduced likelihood of secondary infections and decreased transmission of illnesses that may not be common in the United States.

Why Viruses Spread on Cruise Ships

There are a few reasons why viruses like influenza and norovirus can spread quickly on cruise ships. A couple of the factors are:

  • Crew members: They may work multiple voyages, allowing germs to transmit after exposure to previous passengers.
  • Crowded spaces and tight quarters: When people are in a small space, keeping distance from one another is more difficult. That enables a virus to spread more easily from person to person.
  • Food buffets: Cruise ships often have food buffets, which can be easily contaminated and lead to the rapid spread of illnesses like norovirus.
  • Port visits: People can also pick up pathogens from port visits and bring them back onto the ship, infecting others.

How To Stay Healthy

Staying healthy during your cruise ship journey can make the vacation much more enjoyable. Consider these tips for protecting your health when you take a cruise:

  • Drink water to prevent becoming dehydrated .
  • Get plenty of rest to help your immune system.
  • Limit—and, when possible, avoid—exposure to individuals vomiting or experiencing diarrhea.
  • Report any illnesses to the ship's medical facility during the cruise and follow medical staff guidance.
  • Wash your hands often—especially following bathroom use and before you eat.

Also, check with the cruise line for other ways to cruise if you get sick beforehand. You'll also want to speak with a healthcare provider for recommendations on cruising and if you need to wait.

A Quick Review

Consider staying up-to-date on your vaccines if your next vacation includes traveling by cruise ship. It's important to check the guidelines for your cruise line if you're not vaccinated. Before boarding, you may need to present a vaccine waiver, wear a mask, or provide a negative test.

First Major U.S. Cruise Line Welcomes Guests

Carnival Corporation (CCL) brand Princess Cruises has become the first major North American cruise line to drop the green flag for unvaccinated cruisers.

enchanted princess exterior

On an update to their health and protocol page on July 14, the line said, “We want to make sailing with Princess Cruises as easy, hassle-free, and safe as possible, regardless of your vaccination status, which is why we rigorously follow guidelines from governmental, health and regulatory organizations throughout the world.”

“With the recent easing of CDC vaccination requirements, the options available to unvaccinated guests continue to expand.”

It went on to say, “We can now accommodate up to 10% of unvaccinated guests on most sailings without burdensome exemptions or vaccine status justification, available on a first-come, first-served basis.”

RELATED: CDC Discontinues COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships

Previously, for approval, guests had to apply for a medical exemption that had to be backed by a note from the guest’s doctor. The new policy allows anyone the opportunity to sail, regardless of vaccination status.

The exception to the Rule

There is an exception to the rule for voyages that call to Canada.

The line says, “Please note that cruises that begin, end, or visit Canada will require sailing guests ages 12 and above who are not Canadian citizens to be fully vaccinated unless they are granted a medical exemption.”

It’s important to note that guests still need to apply for an exemption. This allotment is up to 10 percent of the voyage, and the line could put occupancy caps on unvaccinated guests allowed to sail to remain in compliance with CDC guidelines.

A negative test result is still required on all Princess voyages through a PCR, Antigen, or NAAT test.

The news comes on the heels of restrictions loosening around the world, with countries dropping protocols and trying to get back to normal in the safest way possible.

Over in Europe, two Carnival Corporation brands are testing cruises with pre-cruise testing, including Holland America Line voyages from Amsterdam and P&O Cruises’ Iona voyages to Norway.
