Palma de Mallorca cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-04-28 04:20

Port Palma de Mallorca cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Palma de Mallorca, Majorca Island Balearic Spain. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Palma de Mallorca is located on Majorca Island's southeastern coast (Western Mediterranean Sea). Currently, the seaport (locode ESPMI) is among the busiest homeports/departure ports for cruise ships due to its proximity to the international Palma Airport (PMI) - located approx 8 km (5 mi) east of the cruise port. Port's cruise ship schedule shows a variety of roundtrip itineraries to seaports in the Mediterranean and also to the Canary Islands (Spain).

In late-October 2019, Balearic Port Authority (Palma port's managing company)approved a law to protect the Posidonia Oceanica (seagrass species). Ships that drop anchors on the seabed will be fined EUR 30,000. Anchorage for large ships (passenger and cargo) is allowed only in 2 marine zones, located approx 300 m (1000 ft) off the coast and between Playa Can Pere Antoni (beach) and Cap Gros Lighthouse.

The anchorage sites for carriers shipping dangerous goods are further away from the coast. Permission for anchoring is required for all vessels. Anchoring in port's Zone 1, access channel, inside the harbour and anywhere on Posidonia meadows is strictly forbidden. For anchoring in the access channel and the harbour fines are up to EUR 180,000. Mooring in the prohibited marine zones is fined up to EUR 90,000. Anchoring in other areas without permission is fined up to EUR 60,000.

For season 2020, Port Palma de Mallorca had scheduled a total of 586 cruise ship calls (berth bookings), including 100 by Costa , 94 by AIDA , 80 by MSC . Most berthings were booked in October (89). Port's low seasons are March-April and November-December. In 2019, the cruise port handled 2,153295 million ship tourists, including 1,223148 million on transit calls and 930,147 on roundtrips. Homeported ship passengers spent 1-3 nights in Palma hotels pre-cruise.

Since 2023, the Port allows maximum 3x cruise ships per day, including only one large-sized liner with passenger capacity 5000+. Prior to the restrictions were allowed 4x ships per day.

Inca (Majorca) Spain

Inca is a town (not port) on Majorca Island with population around 30,000. There is a junction train station Majorca rail network with trains to Palma (island's capital), also to Manacor and Sa Pobla.

The town was named "Inkan" during the Islamic period, from which several vestiges remain, including the "sinies" and "ganats" - systems used by the Arabs to draw underground water.

The town's peak was at the beginning of the 20th century, following the railway construction and the installation of gas factory. Then was established the footwear manufacturing company "Camper". Inca town is famous for its outdoor market (every Thursday) considered to be one of the island's largest. The biggest market event is on "Good Thursday" Maundy Thursday - Thursday before Easter) coinciding with local trade shows and fairs.

Among the town's tourist attractions (also offered as cruise shore excursions from Palma) are the Santa María la Mayor church, the old convents Sant Domingo and Sant Francesc the Sant Bartomeu monastery. The town is also famous for its wine cellars. In the period 17th-19th centuries, Inca Spain was a major producer of wine - until phylloxera (pest of commercial grapevines) destroyed the industry. Today many of the old wine cellars are used as restaurants for serving traditional Mallorcan dishes - like sopes tombet, mallorquines, gato d'ametlles.

Palma de Mallorca cruise terminal

The biggest Balearic Islands port Palma de Mallorca is in the middle of the city, right in front of the Old Town’s streets. Port Plama is connected from one side to the other by an esplanade (seafront promenade) and comprises four zones – Ribera (shoreline dock), commercial docks, recreational docks and Dique del Oeste (west dock).

Palma de Mallorca cruise port terminals are Estacion Maritima 1,2,3,4 and 5. The first four (Estacion Maritima 1,2,3 and 4) cruise terminals are for the cruise vessel docked at the Paraires and Poniente quays and are connected by a network of covered sidewalks. They have features like snackbar, cafeteria, office, restrooms, post office, police station and telephone kiosks. They are located southwest of the center of Plama (about a mile and a half).

The cruise ships that dock at the west sea wall (Dique Del Oeste) piers are served by passengers terminal Estacion Martima 5.

Palma de Mallorca is a charming place to visit with a lot of attractions, magnificent architecture, sidewalk places for a coffee and very friendly and hospitable population. You can enjoy both shore excursions and city tours in the area.

  • Pisa’s leaning tower, from Livorno
  • the iconic David, artwork of Michelangelo in Florence, from Livorno
  • the Cappuchini Catacombs, Palermo
  • the ambient old town of Ibiza
  • La Seu: the most popular attraction in Palma de Mallorca. The gorgeous cathedral was built more than 300 years, the construction began in the 13 th century. Gaudi took part in its 20 th century rebuilding.
  • Almudaina Palace: or Palacio de la Almudaina was a fortress converted in the 13 th century into a palace for the monarchy of Mallorca. Currently it is a great museum where you can see paintings, Flemish tapestries, carpets from the Middle East and other artworks.
  • Bellver Castle: here are the Despuig Classical Sculpture and Palma History Museums. To go there you will have to hike up the hill starting from Estacion Maritima for approximately 10 minutes.
  • C’an Pere Antoni Beach: sunny beach with golden sands and warm clean water. Located South of the La Seu.
  • Palma To Soller Railway: take a 27 km journey to Soller, small and lively village in the mountain, by a retro electric train. This will take about an hour and you will enjoy views from all over the island. You can take the train from the Palma station, located at the city center.

Palma port in Mallorca, Spain, is among the busiest cruise ports in the Mediterranean.

Palma to limit cruise ships after environmental concerns

Spanish officials hail ‘historic’ deal to limit arrivals to maximum of three vessels a day at Mallorca port

Officials in the Balearic Islands will seek to limit cruise ships to a maximum of three vessels a day at its largest port, in a deal described as the first of its kind in Spain .

The regional government said in a statement that arrivals at Palma in Mallorca would be limited when possible to three cruise ships a day, one of the vessels allowed to be a mega-cruise liner carrying more than 5,000 people, starting in 2022.

Calling the deal historic, officials estimated it would result in a 13% drop in arrivals at one of the busiest cruise ports in the Mediterranean compared with 2019.

The procession of cruise ships passing through Palma has been a source of friction for years, pitting environmental concerns against the economic benefits of a sector in which as many as eight ships arrive on the same day, disgorging more than 22,000 people into the maze of narrow streets in Palma’s old town.

In 2019, when more than 2.6 million cruise-ship tourists visited the Balearic Islands, more than 25 organisations joined forces to call for the vessels to be limited to one arrival a day with a maximum of 4,000 tourists.

“The mega-cruise ship tourism arriving in Palma has grown in a way that is unsustainable and undesirable for our city, leading to serious environmental impact and increasing social protest,” they said in a joint manifesto.

“Tourist overcrowding devalues our historical and cultural heritage, converting urban space into a theme park for visitors only and degrading the tourist experience for others.”

The regional government said the deal had been more than two years in the making.

“It means setting, for the first time, a real limit to the arrival of cruise ship passengers to Palma, something that would not have been possible without the will of the sector,” Iago Negueruela, the regional official in charge of economy and tourism, said.

Similar deals have been struck for Dubrovnik in Croatia and Aalborg in Denmark, Negueruela told the Spanish newspaper El País. “We’re the first to do so in a port as large as Palma.”

As cruise ship arrivals were often scheduled months in advance, the new daily limits would include fewer than 20 exemption days in order to honour previously signed contracts, the government said. On these days the limit for cruise ship arrivals would be increased to four, though the number of total passengers would be capped at 59,500 a week.

The five-year deal was criticised by critics and proponents of cruise ship tourism. Some, such as the Platform Against MegaCruises, said little would seemingly change.

“Three cruise ships a day – one of them with a capacity of more than 5,000 passengers – still seems to us a very high figure for what the city can bear,” it said. “The regional government has missed out on the opportunity to make a courageous decision to safeguard residents of the Balearic Islands, their environment, their health and their right to the city.”

The competing platform Yes to Cruises described the push to limit the sector as an “error” that could have grave repercussions for an economy, after a 2015 study by the port authority estimated that tourism linked to cruises supported more than 5,500 jobs and contributed €256m in direct and indirect revenues to the region.

The spokesperson for the platform, the local tour guide Álex Fraile, suggested this would set a precedent: “Is the next step to restrict the arrival of aircraft at [Mallorca’s] Son Sant Joan airport?” .

Port commission working to further increase international passenger numbers to boost tourism industry in Penang

PENANG’s cruise industry looks promising this year with the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) recording an increase in ship arrivals in the first quarter of 2024.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the terminal received 473,517 cruise passengers as of April 23, compared with the same period last year during which 402,268 passengers arrived.

SPCT is the state’s sole and Malaysia’s leading cruise ship docking facility built in 2010 with capacity for 12,000 people.

Speaking at a recent media conference at the PPC head office in SPCT, George Town, Yeoh said the 17.71% increase painted a positive outlook.

The port wants to increase the variety of cruise liners and passenger arrivals to further boost Penang’s lucrative cruise vacation and related sectors.

He said that although PPC set a forecast of only 1.3 million passenger arrivals for this year, the commission predicted 883 port calls this year compared to 857 registered in 2023.

Penang port, he pointed out, had already received confirmed bookings of 161 port calls from international vessels since the start of 2024.

“Among the key highlights of the arrivals is that of the Spectrum of the Sea on June 28 and the maiden visit of Anthem of the Sea on Oct 13,” revealed Yeoh, adding that the port aimed to attract various cruise lines to explore Penang’s lucrative cruise vacation sector, as a way of boosting tourism.

“I would like to encourage cruise lines all over the world to book port calls two or three years in advance,” he added.

Present during the media conference were PPC head of department (cruise operation and commercial technical services, cruise and ferry operations division) Mior Saifulnizam Mior Jamal, PPC head of the system and facilities services division Mohd Nizam Ismail and PPC’s member of board of directors Datuk M Samarajoo.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

palma cruise arrivals

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

palma cruise arrivals

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

palma cruise arrivals

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

palma cruise arrivals

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

palma cruise arrivals

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
