Trek to Yomi follows the story of Hiroki, a warrior seeking out the ones who destroyed his village. The game is set in Japan during the Edo period and draws heavily on Japanese culture and mythology, much like Flying Wild Hog's previous work in the Shadow Warrior Series . By the time players reach chapter 6 , Hiroki has faced countless hardships in his journey, from the mundane to the supernatural, in his journey to track down Kagerou and get revenge for the destruction of his village.

Choosing Love

By choosing Love, Hiroki returns from Yomi briefly to fight Kagerou one final time. After beating Kagerou with the power of Yomi, Hiroki returns to Yomi to be with his beloved Aiko for the rest of eternity.

This grants the achievement "Follow Your Heart". In this ending Hiroki finally avenges the village and puts an end to Kagerou's evil, but leaves the world to be with his love.

Choosing Duty

Choosing to uphold his duty, Hiroki returns to fight Kagerou once more and after besting him, the game skips ahead to the future. Hiroki, now much older, trains a young boy in the same way he was once trained, in a mirror of the scenes from earlier in the game, continuing to uphold his duty to his Sensei and the people.

This grants the achievement "Follow Your Mind". This ending sees Hiroki remain in the world after the defeat of Kagerou, choosing to continue guarding the people from evil and to train a successor also.

Refuse Gifts

By refusing gifts and surrendering to Rage, Hiroki takes on Kagerou for the last time and slays him, before donning his armor and usurping him as the leader of Kagerou's army. In this ending, Hiroki becomes the very thing he swore to destroy , and lives the rest of his days as a killer.

This dark ending grants the achievement "Follow Your Blade". This ending sees Hiroki achieve his vengeance, but at the cost of becoming a villain just like Kagerou, making this undeniably the "bad" ending.

Which Path to Select to Unlock Endings in Trek to Yomi?

  • Four endings can be unlocked as you select paths through the storyline. While three of the endings are interconnected , the fourth one is a secret ending .
  • Not to spoil the lore, the only choice that can unlock these three endings is during Chapter six .

The story of Trek to Yomi is about traversing the land of the dead and coming to terms with the reality that the game’s protagonist, Hiroki, can not fulfill the promise he made to protect both his love Aoki and the people of his village. At the end of the game, the player is given the chance to return to the living world to defeat the warlord that killed him, but it is the player’s choice that decides if the reason is for his love for her, his duty to his people, or simply revenge. Each choice will give the player one of three endings, with the game also containing a secret ending that will conclude the story halfway through the game. This guide will tell you how to get all 4 endings in Trek to Yomi and explain what each of them means.

The first three endings on this guide will be the ones that you will have the chance to choose between at the end of the game, with one of these likely being the first you get in the game. Each of these three endings requires you to lose the fight against the warlord Kagerou at the end of Chapter 3. This fight is one that you are expected to lose and it’s what leads to your death and subsequent journey through Yomi. Upon defeating Hiroki’s shadow Ara-Mitama at the end of Chapter 6, you will be asked by another spirit called Nigi-Tama to choose which path you would like to walk and will be given three options.

Each selection will determine the ending you get with each one having an achievement awarded for them. The first time you finish the game you will unlock the “Samurais Die Twice” achievement as well as the achievement tied to your ending of choice.

Trek to Yomi All Ending

In order to get the Path of Love ending, players will need to select the “Choose Love” option at the end of Chapter 6. In this ending, Hiriko chooses to return to Yomi after saving his village to stay with Aiko for eternity. Yomi grants him one last breath and returns him to his physical body. Back at the dojo, Kagerou and Hiriko have one last battle, where Kagerou channels the power that he brought back from Yomi when he died all those years ago. Hiroki kills him, and with the bandits defeated and the village saved, returns to the Yomi, happily existing for all eternity with Aiko. This ending will get you the “Follow Your Heart” achievement.

Trek to Yomi All Ending

As the name suggests, players will need to select the “Choose Duty” option when talking to Nigi-Tama. This choice sees Hiroki decide that he is willing to let go of Aiko and return to the living world to protect and lead his people. Chapter Seven plays out largely the same gameplay-wise as the previous ending but has different dialogue to reflect this choice. Upon defeating Kagerou, the ending cutscene will take place in the future, after Hiroki helps his village rebuild. Now older and wiser, Hiroki is seen training a young boy in the dojo, just as he and his Sensei did at the start of the game, continuing his duty to protect and help his people. This ending will get you the “Follow Your Mind” achievement.

Trek to Yomi All Ending

While both of those endings can be considered the “good” ending depending on your point of view, the Path of Fury is definitively the game’s bad ending. Selecting the “Refuse Gifts” choice will see Hiroki reject both his love and duty as well as his honor as he cuts down Nigi-Tama. Upon the defeat of Kagerou, Hiroki dawns the fallen warlord’s armor and usurps him as the leader of his army. Hiroki lives his life as a brutal killer like the man who murdered the love of his life and his Sensei, fully giving in to his revenge and fury. This ending will get you the “Follow Your Blade” achievement.

Trek to Yomi All Ending

This ending is the most difficult to actually achieve and is also the least satisfying from a narrative standpoint. Chapter 3 of the game sees Hiroki return to his village in flames and Kagerou, the bandit that killed his Sensei in Chapter 1 has returned. The end of Chapter 3 sees you confronting Kagerou in a boss fight and as I said before, you are expected to lose and play the rest of the game. The battle is not impossible, however, and it is winning this fight that will reward you with a secret ending. It is important to note that you only get one shot at this fight, once Kagerou kills you, the game progresses and you will need to start the game over to try again. The only way you will be able to do the fight again is by really paying attention to your health bar and when it gets low, pause the game and load your latest checkpoint. You can also create a copy of your save file just before the fight and load that save to try again.

When you do defeat the warlord, Hiroki finds Aiko dead. Even being able to survive his encounter with Kagerou and completely avoid his trip to Yomi, he is unable to save the woman he loves. Battered and emotionally defeated, he leaves his sword and home behind as he walks into the night-covered world, hoping that he is able to find himself a new path to walk without his village and without Aiko. Her parting words to him are that she will wait for him in Yomi, no matter how long it takes. This ending will get you the “Early End” achievement.

Trek to Yomi is a side-scrolling action game and there is a total of six chapters in this game that you have to play. You’ll also have to make decisions in this game that’ll affect the endings of the game. In this guide, we tell you how many endings are there to this game as well as the decisions that you can make.

All Endings of Trek to Yomi

The normal endings to Trek to Yomi are 3 but there is a secret ending to this game as well making it a total of 4 endings to this game. For the normal endings, you have the following endings.

  • Path of Love
  • Path of Duty
  • Path of Fury

All these three endings will trigger the decision that you make before the boss fight of the last chapter. So basically, you get to choose the ending of the game. But whatever end you choose, you have to defeat the same boss, only the cutscene will be different.

Before the boss fight, there’ll be a cutscene in which NIGI-TAMA will offer you some gifts and you have to make a decision there, the decision you make will trigger the respective ending. There’ll be no option to rechoose the ending so, what you can do is make a save file on the cloud before making the decision and when you complete one end, download the file and overwrite it with the last saved file. By doing this you’ll continue from before making the decision of the ending of the game. You can play all three endings by this method but if you want to take the long route then you can do that as well by playing the whole game again and making the other decision than the previous ending.

The secret ending of this game can be unlocked by defeating the boss “Shogun Kagerou” at the end of the third chapter. This boss fight will trigger a cutscene after taking a couple of hits from the boss. But if you don’t get hit and would be able to defeat the boss then this will unlock a secret ending to the game.

In all of the gameplay, you have to make paths three times. The first two paths that you make will not have any effect on the ending of the game. But the third path that you have to make in the sixth chapter before the boss fight, will decide what ending you’d be getting.

A cutscene will play in which NIGI-TAMA will offer you to make a path and there’ll be three options on the screen that you can choose from:

  • Choose Love
  • Choose Duty
  • Reject Gifts

Choose Love option will trigger the Path of Love ending and a cutscene will play respective to this end after defeating the final boss of the game.

Choose Duty option will trigger the Path of Duty ending and a cutscene will play respective to this end after defeating the final boss of the game.

Rejecting Gifts option will trigger the Path of Fury ending and a cutscene will play respective to this end after defeating the final boss of the game.

These were all the endings and the paths that you have to make that affect the ending of the game.

Trek to Yomi review: The path of the samurai

Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog don't just take players into the time of samurai, it takes them into samurai films with the dazzling Trek to Yomi.

Cinema's rich history has encapsulated dozens of genres, many of them representing different cultures. Some people grew up on high octane action movies, others grew up on big budget horror, and there's a subset of movie fans that have developed an affinity for Japanese samurai films. Trek to Yomi, from Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hog, is a game that's designed for the samurai film lovers and one that works in introducing their storytelling style to a new audience. While the journey feels short, it's a satisfying one nonetheless.

Trek to Yomi's story follows a young samurai named Hiroki, an adopted orphan raised with the sole purpose of defending his village. When an evil warlord named Kagerou attacks and razes everything before him, it leaves Hiroki at a crossroads in more ways than one. After a fateful battle with Kagerou, Hiroki finds himself in Yomi, the fabled afterlife as interpreted by Shinto mythology.

What's interesting about Trek to Yomi's story is that it features a fixed series of gameplay sequences, but how the narrative unfolds is largely up to the player. At the start of the story, Hiroki is bound to his duty, just as his sensei taught him. Once he finds himself in Yomi, Hiroki's path is shaped by simple player choices. What drives Hiroki from there? Is it love for his slain paramour, his duty to protect his village, or a thirst for revenge against the fiend that has murdered dozens?

Whatever choices the player makes will influence the direction of the game's cutscenes, though they do not appear to have much influence on the actual gameplay sequences. I'd have liked to see more of how these choices influence the narrative, but unfortunately, there are no multiple save files or any other way to backtrack. Once you're on your path, that's where you stay until the story is over.

The blade cuts deep

Trek to Yomi wears its inspiration as a badge of honor. Picture a black-and-white samurai film from the 50s and 60s. This is literally that right down to the grainy film effects. When characters encounter one another, they speak about the honor of battle and clash swords. It takes a moment to realize that the playable portion of the game has kicked in and that you're not just watching a cutscene. It's one of the most unique presentations I've seen in a game and one that does a lot of justice to this style of film. From the monochromatic visuals to the clashing steel of the blades, this feels like a playable samurai movie.

The combat further adds to the immersion. Fights in Trek to Yomi are mostly one-on-one sword fights, though there are instances where groups of enemies will try and overcome Hiroki with a numbers advantage. Success hinges on finding an opening to strike, but also in balancing offense with defense. Those who mash buttons will often leave themselves open to attack. Play too defensively by holding the block button and Hiroki's stamina meter will drop and ultimately leave him vulnerable.

The game offers over a dozen potential sword-swinging combos to master, but that sometimes proves to be information overload. By the end of the story, I was mainly relying on one or two combos and paying the rest of the available button strings no mind. While enemies can hit hard, finishers can help replenish Hiroki's health. The issue here is that the window for finishers can be unpredictable. Sometimes an enemy won't register a finishing blow, even as they're standing still, other times a combo will hit so hard that a foe will just fall before Hiroki can even nail the finishing blow. Consistently hitting finishers proved to be one of the game's more undesirable challenges.

Ranged weapons are also part of the combat experience, though they're honestly something I could have done without. They feel like a shortcut on offense and almost impossible to defend on defense, though the best I can say about the latter is that there aren't too many enemies that use arrows or ozutsu blasts.

Positioning matters in battle, as well. Nailing a well-timed parry that puts Hiroki behind his opponent never stops feeling good. Conversely, inputting a combo and ending with Hiroki inexplicably turning his back to his opponent doesn't feel so great. I had a few frustrating moments with combo inputs, but outside of that, combat in Trek to Yomi feels crisp, as does the way in which the game fluidly transitions to it by putting Hiroki on a 2D plane.

Outside of battle, players explore their surroundings in a 3D space. This mostly involves searching for ammunition, collectibles, or save points. Towards the middle of the adventure, players are introduced to puzzles that involve sliding Kanji characters into their proper slots to open up new paths. Within those paths, expect to find time-sensitive escape sequences to help mix things up between sword clashes. These instances provide some extra tension and can lead to a few errant deaths, but Trek to Yomi's generous save system reduces any frustration that would normally stem from that.

Trek to glory

Trek to Yomi is presented like a very different type of video game experience and that's largely attributed to its presentation. Flying Wild Hog went into this project with the goal of making a playable samurai film and they've capably accomplished that objective. The swordplay is strong and complements a captivating story. It's a story that players will want to see through to the end, though some may be disappointed by the short runtime. I was able to polish this off in just a hair under five hours, but those looking for a challenge can take on the game's hardest difficulty after completing the game for the first time.

Fans of Kurosawa films or of Japanese samurai movies in general will dig Trek to Yomi. Anyone with even a passing curiosity for this genre should absolutely check this out. Trek to Yomi aims high and proves to be as sharp as Hiroki's blade.

If you’re a fan of classic samurai movies, there’s a lot to love about Trek to Yomi. It’s a katana-swiping side-scroller with a worthwhile story that does a magnificent job of distilling old school Japanese cinema into video game form. But while it never stopped blowing me away aesthetically, the things you’re actually doing in that beautiful world are less impressive, with overly simplistic combat and exploration that only begins to scratch its surface. Even so, Trek to Yomi’s stylish presentation makes up for many of its gameplay shortcomings, making this a memorable samurai tale I’m glad I played.

Trek to Yomi’s dedication to black and white samurai movies from the 20th century is apparent in literally every moment of it, from the look of its boot-up logos and main menu all the way to the closing credits. That includes everything from the artificial sparkle dotting the screen that makes it look like it’s playing from an old film reel, to the pacing and line delivery during cutscenes, to the references to historically accurate traditions and religious practices that play a central role in the story. It’s actually hard to overstate just how great it feels to move about in such a meticulously detailed adaptation of a film style I’ve always adored, and that movie magic is the best thing Trek to Yomi has to offer without a doubt.

The story itself is your standard revenge quest featuring a stoic protagonist struggling to choose between his duty and his personal desires, complete with the good ol’ traumatic childhood massacre serving as its first chapter. It’s a cliche, to be sure, and if you’ve watched almost any vintage samurai movie then you’ll be able to see a lot of its events coming from a mile away. But with all the other ways Trek to Yomi pays homage to the classics that inspired it, an overly conventional story doesn’t end up being such a bad thing. Sometimes tropes become tropes for a good reason, and this familiar tale was like stepping into a warm bath filled with my favorite, samurai-scented candles. It isn’t entirely without its own twists and turns either, and on at least one occasion it did something I hadn’t anticipated – moments that went a long way toward redeeming the otherwise predictable plot.

You’ll spend most of this adventure ronin around and slicing your way through beautiful backdrops with a combat system that’s satisfying despite not having much to it. You’ve got light attacks, heavy attacks, a parry, and a few ranged weapons thrown in for good measure, but that’s about as deep as Trek to Yomi ever goes. Every now and again you’ll unlock a new attack combo or meet a new enemy type that requires you to mix up your strategy ever so slightly, but after less than an hour I had mastered most of the skills I needed to blow through armies of bandits and spectral samurai with unbridled ease. This was especially true once I unlocked the ability to easily stun enemies and finish them off with a bloody animation that also heals you, which you can use to bail yourself out of nearly every encounter the campaign throws at you.

It’s not that combat is ever bad, it’s just extremely simplistic and doesn’t evolve enough as you progress to keep things feeling fresh. It’s also very familiar to many other 2D action games, with no real hook or new idea to set itself apart from anything I haven’t already seen elsewhere. Most of the time, I found myself just enjoying the awesome sights and sounds while I barrelled through every enemy in my way (even on the hardest difficulty, mind you). It’s a good thing that the whole adventure only lasts six hours, because combat gets old in less than half that time, so at least it didn’t have much chance to overstay its welcome in a way that got frustrating.

Boss fights are an exception to the breezy combat though, as they usually introduce an enemy that can’t simply be decapitated in an instant. These spongey champions must be studied so you can devise a strategy for surviving their attacks and carefully counter them. Bosses accounted for the vast majority of my deaths throughout my playthroughs, since they’re one of the only parts that forced me to mix up my strategies. Even when I was getting slapped around helplessly, it was a blast figuring out how to best these dastardly warriors, but they’re so few and far between that they just made me wish more of the combat presented a similar challenge.

Trek to Yomi also dabbles in some light exploration and even a side quest or puzzle now and again, though it’s all extremely shallow stuff. Exploration usually amounts to a few samey optional rooms with a hidden collectible or an alternate path to get wherever you’re headed – sometimes you’ll even find a way to avoid a combat sequence altogether by triggering a neat environmental kill, such as dropping logs on some fools like a vengeful Ewok. It’s just too bad these ideas weren’t taken a little further as it’s currently all incredibly straightforward and opportunities for environmental kills almost never come up. Similarly, side quests usually amount to an optional area where you can slay a few extra baddies and grab some easy loot from a grateful survivor, while puzzles are little more than mind-numbingly easy chores like pushing an object or matching some symbols. As a result, these diversions all just feel like filler.

How do you feel about black and white games?

Trek to Yomi is a brief but captivating journey that’s like playing through a monochromatic Japanese movie, and that excellent presentation is enough to carry it even though it falls short in most other respects. Combat is one-note and easily mastered, and exploration and puzzles don’t have much to offer aside from a fleeting distraction. Thankfully, its relatively brief story was one that still drew me in enough to absolutely feel worth my time.

Trek to Yomi copies the style of Akira Kurosawa's iconic black and white samurai films: rice fields blowing in the wind, villages burning, a great black swirling vortex in hell. Okay, so Trek to Yomi goes to some places Kurosawa's films didn't. But the path there is littered with glitches, and I only stuck it out through the finicky, floaty combat to see where my samurai's descent into madness would lead him.

After his town is ransacked by bandits, protagonist Hiroki must decide whether to remain bound to his duty, protect his loved ones, or seek revenge. It's classic samurai stuff, but the story is well-told, as Hiroki faces his personal demons (also, literal demons) and I got to make decisions that influenced exactly how this samurai tragedy would end. All of the Japanese voice actors give raw performances, and Hiroki's actor in particular manages to convey his downward spiral into anger and regret.

I like Trek to Yomi's supernatural elements, too. Hiroki straddles the line between life and death as he journeys through literal hell for the latter half of the game. It reminds me of the supernatural elements of Uncharted 1 and 2, monsters and ghostly apparitions catching me off guard in what I thought was a more grounded world. They add an intriguing mysticism without being overbearing.

Unfortunately combat is weightless and repetitive, and most of the trek in Trek to Yomi is spent swinging a sword. I spent most of the game repeating the same combos, occasionally parrying enemy attacks to create openings. I had a limited supply of long-range weapons like shurikens and arrows and picked up some new sword skills along the way, like a flurry of quick strikes and a piercing thrust through armored enemies. All of them ended up feeling irrelevant when the same parry and slash routines could kill essentially every normal enemy.

I was constantly frustrated by how hard it was to tell when I'd parried an attack. The visual feedback is scant, and the vocal cue is so clipped that I could never consistently capitalize on the opening I'd made. Combat feels sloppy elsewhere too: sometimes I could see my sword slashes clearly connect with an enemy and get no reaction. Are they hiding their hitboxes inside their bodies, somehow? (If so that's one samurai technique I never learned.) Even when I did land a clean hit I didn’t feel any sort of impact unless my opponent staggered back, which was consistently difficult to trigger.

The controls and wooden animation just can't live up to the fluidity of the film duels Trek to Yomi so badly wants to emulate. After dispatching an enemy I'd hit R to turn around and face the one behind me—and nothing would happen. I’d have to mash it multiple times to get Hiroki to register the action, and the seconds I wasted with my back turned caused me to lose HP and sometimes die.

Dodging is inconsistent as well: Sometimes I’d be able to roll behind an enemy, while other times it’d be just like rolling right into a brick wall.

Enemy variety isn’t Trek to Yomi’s strong suit, either. At first you’ll be fighting bandits, and then supernatural creatures and ghostly apparitions. These enemies use the same exact character models throughout the entire game. Bosses are a rare break from the monotony and were the only enemies that challenged me to do more than mash out the same combos. One boss had me constantly adjusting my positioning on the battlefield. If I stayed too close to one side of the stage, its wind attack could blow me off and it’d be an instant game over.

Exploration mostly follows linear paths from story beat to story beat. At times easy puzzles stood in my way, but solving them was trivial because they all used the same design. 

Outside of combat a fixed camera with 3D movement lets you explore for collectibles and upgrades, such as stamina and health increases. Often you’ll come across two paths: one that advances the story, and another that leads to some sort of collectible or upgrade. The issue here is that sometimes it’s hard to tell which is which.

Wanting to find as many upgrades as I could to make Hiroki better in combat, I’d choose one path and stick with it, hoping to find what I’m looking for. But if I chose the critical path I'd end up dropping down from a ledge that wouldn't let me back up. Trek to Yomi is generous with save points before and after nearly every encounter, so restarting from a checkpoint is usually an easy option. But it's strange and counterintuitive to have to savescum just to explore those alternate paths.

I might have forgiven some of Yomi's design misdemeanors were it not for the progress-blocking glitches. Sometimes I’d clip through the floor after jumping down from a ledge. Other times my character would vanish into the air after falling through a collapsing roof, nowhere to be found. I’d have to restart from a checkpoint to try again or close the game and relaunch it.

A few times enemy encounters simply wouldn’t activate, and enemies that were supposed to spawn just didn’t—including the final boss. I had to relaunch the game every time I died and wanted to fight it again because otherwise, the arena would be empty.

For all its visual grandeur, Trek to Yomi isn't much fun. It tries to tell a story worthy of a samurai drama, but the combat never graduates from the boring part of a sword training montage: it's just the same moves, over and over again.

Trek to Yomi: Chapter 4 Guide

At the start of chapter 4, Hiroki sees Aiko in the distance and follows after her. Run forward, and a vision ahead of her vanishes. Follow the path down. Soon you’ll find an old woman who warns you of a plague. In front of the cage in front of you, you’ll find a collectible. Head to the right near the water to find a shuriken. Then proceed past the cage. You’ll reach a shrine and then a split path. The house on the left has shurikens and a collectible, but the path forward is the one at the top of the area. Here you’ll find a new enemy type, called a Blighted. They’re basically zombies. These take a few more hits to kill than earlier foes. There’s another ahead, and then you’ll run around a trail and find some ammo. Head north to find a cliff and another pair of Blighted. Take them out and climb up. At the top, you’ll find ammo and a shrine. Move forward to find another image of Aiko, but she vanishes, and the log you’re on collapses, dumping you with more Blighted. Take them out and move forward to meet a samurai who thinks you’re a demon. You’ll need to kill him, which unlocks a new skill.

Several more Blighted await you ahead. Take them out to climb a cliff to reach a shrine. You’ll find a split path. On the left, you’ll find a collectible, a stamina increase, and ammo. Return to the right to run onto a log with more Blighted. This one holds up, and you’ll have to climb down. Climb over another log to find more ammo. A stronger Blighted waits ahead, and beating him will get you another skill. Move forward to find a few more Blighted ahead. Next to a shrine, you’ll find another split path. Go north to avoid a fight and destroy a dam, releasing water that will kill the foes below. Then continue forward into a building with a collectible. Climbing a ladder here leads to a stamina upgrade, though only after taking out a Blighted. Then climb down and exit the back of the building. Here you’ll see a bunch of Blighted surrounding a giant bug enemy. Take them out and keep moving. On the next screen, you’ll find ammo, a shuriken, and a shrine. On the next screen, you’ll face another samurai who believes you’re the enemy and can’t be dissuaded. Beat him and run past a rock that looks like a face. You’ll climb one cliff and drop from another. Beat a few Blighted and climb another cliff. You’ll find another split path ahead though the way forward is north. You’ll need to climb a few more cliffs. Several Blighted wait for you, but past them is another shrine. A villager here will speak with you but only in riddles. He advised you to hang onto hope.

Another samurai waits ahead, and like the first two, he can’t be reasoned with. Kill him. Go into the next house you find and drop down. Head left and then climb down a ladder for ammo and a health upgrade. Then climb the ladder again and head right. Once you’re back outside, climb a ledge. You can go left for ammo and a collectible but then go right. Pass a bridge with Blighted on it. There’s a shrine on the far side. Head down the path and find a stamina increase on the docks. You’ll then see the Aiko vision ahead and need to climb a ridge to follow her. An enemy here has a new type of weapon called an ozutsu. It’s basically a simple gun. Take him out quick to add it to your arsenal. On the next screen, you’ll find ammo and a shrine.

After moving forward, you’ll reach a cutscene, and Hiroki starts piloting a raft. After the cutscene ends, you’ll be in a fight with your crew from chapter 2, leaving little doubt about where you are. Defeat them and then find a shrine and a cliff to jump down ahead. You’ll then need to cross a bridge with a bunch more Blighted, including another ozutsu. After passing the bridges here, you’ll find another shrine. You’ll also see a ladder which you can climb and enter a building at the top. Inside is a quiver upgrade and a door to break down. The path forward is filled with Blighted but it will eventually collapse, dropping you among more Blighted. Take them out and proceed forward.

Trek to Yomi

Inside the next building, you’ll find, surprise, more Blighted. Past them, you’ll find more ammo and a path above you. Climb a ledge, and the roof ahead of you will collapse, leading you to slide down. You’ll soon take another raft. When you get off, you’ll find a shrine. Fight a few more enemies and enter a tower. Go up the ladder here, and at the top will be ammo and a shrine. Exit ahead and start down the path. Now there are enemies in your way, but the path behind you starts collapsing too. Stay ahead of it, and you’ll eventually reach safety. A small ledge to the right of the screen has a collectible, then move forward to a shrine. Some ammo is just ahead, and you’ll then fight across another bridge. You’ll push a log down to cross a gap.

Move down and slide down a few slopes. At the bottom of these are a collectible and more ammo. A bridge and then a field full of Blighted are ahead. At the end of these areas, you’ll climb a cliff, where you’ll finally see Aiko again. Follow her for a boss fight. This one takes the damage potential up a bit. She can lay into you up close or rain projectiles on you. Dodge these attacks and make sure to mix up both your close and ranged attacks. Defeat her to end chapter 4.

Trek to Yomi Chapter 5 Walkthrough Guide

A guide on how to complete Chapter 5 of Trek to Yomi.

Trek to Yomi is the newest cinematic action game to get published by Devolver Digital. Set in feudal Japan, this game follows the story of Hiroki, a samurai who has to defend his town from a warlord that is out to claim lands to his name. Trek to Yomi is presented in the Kurosawa art style with everything in black and white and is set on a 2.5D world.

This Trek to Yomi Chapter 5 Walkthrough is the fifth part of the Trek to Yomi guide series, we’ll follow Hiroki through the fifth chapter of his journey through the Yomi. If you have not seen the previous chapter yet, check out our Trek To Yomi Chapter 4 Missions Walkthrough .

How to Complete Trek to Yomi Chapter 5

The steps below are the paths to take to get through the objectives quickly. There can be different paths that should be taken to get to secret areas and find upgrades or collectibles which can easily be missed. We’ve included notes at parts of the guide to tell which areas have artifacts.

Journey forth

Hiroki finds himself in the Yomi where he has to go through its challenges to go back to the mortal world once more. The path through the Yomi is a straight one, however there are lots of spirits, wraiths, and other entities that will make the journey a difficult one.

Follow the path forwards and pick up the Great Thunder Artifact at the side of the path near the starting point. Once you have crossed the curled path that has straightened, up you will arrive at the first shrine of the chapter.

A little bit further away are some glowing symbols on the stones translating to “beginning”, “fire”, and “down” (from top to bottom). There is also a glowing tablet on the ground that shows a puzzle dial with three concentric circles. Turn the circles so that the symbols will all match the ones inscribes on the rocks.

Continue forward where you’ll enter a hall and the spirit of the first man Hiroki slew. Defeat him and proceed to the next area. Head towards the left side to get some ammunition and the Cleaving Thunder Artifact .

Continue moving to the right past the vista looking at the tall tower until you arrive in front of a gate. Before entering, check on top of the crates to the right to get a Stamina Upgrade . Inside the gate is the next shrine. Follow the path down to a couple of ledges where you will encounter two spirits. Defeat them and continue moving forward.

You’ll encounter more spirits along the way and then you’ll face against your first specter. You can block its flying swords easily and the close combat is similar to previous enemies. After defeating it, you will learn the Light Long Combination.

You’ll then enter a ruined building. Head tot he room up north to get an Ozutsu Capacity Upgrade . Continue moving to the right where you will gave to face more spirits and specters. The journey towards the next shrine is far away, so make sure to learn how to heal through perfect parries and finishing strikes when needed.

Once you’re at the end, use the shrine and head into the next gate. In here, you will fight against the wraith who will summon other spirits to fight for her, after the third wave, you can hit her and dispel her aura so that she becomes vulnerable. Try to fight near her so that you don’t have to run across the map. You can also just rush to her and hit her a couple of times before she summons spirits. After the wraith is defeated, you will learn the Anti-Armor Rotation Combination.

Continue moving to the right and defeat the other spirits. Then, head into the house and move to the right to defeat an armored spirit and reach the next shrine. You can also get the Ozutsu Capacity Upgrade from the table.

Head back to the entrance and go to the north room. Fight the ambushing spirits to proceed. As you exit the house, you’ll find the next shrine. You’ll then see another set of symbols with one obscured by a movable cart. These translate to “river”, “earth”, and “cut” (from left to right). You’ll then have to move to the tablet and rotate the pieces again so that the symbols match arranged from left to right to top to bottom. Solving this will reconstruct the statue and clear the path to the stairs. (Go to the back of the rightmost statue to see a Stamina Upgrade )

Climb the stairs to encounter another batch of spirits and a wraith. After defeating them proceed forward, but check the crates first to get the Earth Thunder Artifact before heading down the stairs. Continue going through the path as you clear it from spirits until you reach the palace door.

Enter the depths

Enter the palace and on the left side of the hall is a shrine you can use. Head further into the main hall, but immediately retreat as soon as the walls start moving. At the entrance of this hall to the left is another passageway that opens up. Enter through this path and you’ll encounter a shade. This enemy can teleport behind you, so time your Heavy Stun to easily eliminate it. It will give you a Bo-Shuriken Capacity Upgrade .

Continue moving to the left to another hallway. Go towards the pedestal and interact with it. Immediately run back as the walls move in. Go to the left side where a new passageway appears to reach the next shrine. Head next to the other side of the room and defeat the spirits that appear. You’ll then arrive at a junction. Head to the path up north to get a Bo-Shuriken Capacity Upgrade .

Go to the right path and eliminate the enemies that appear. Continue moving to the right and the path up north opens up. Before heading there, move to the right side to get ammunition and the Black Thunder Artifact . Enter the path to the north. At the junction, head to the left first to get a Stamina Upgrade , then to the right.

You’ll then arrive at a shrine room with a shrine nearby. Climb up the stairs and head to the right path to get the Couchant Thunder Artifact . Head back and go up the other flight of stairs. Go towards the center platform and face the spirit of Sadatame once more. Similar to the first fight, he will sit back and have other spirits fight for him once his health reaches half. Once he’s defeated, you will learn the Block Ignoring Combination.

Head towards the right path to find the next shrine, as well as the Roaring Thunder Artifact . Go outside and cross the bridge where you will find another shrine. Continue moving to the left as you encounter more spirits. After that, you’ll reach another shrine. Head up towards the north path to get a Health Upgrade .

Back to the main route, head to the left and prepare to fight against mounted spirits. Similar to the mounted bandits, hit them three times to defeat them. There will be three mounted spirits that will patrol the area. Cross the desert afterwards to reach the next shrine.

Continue moving to the left and you will encounter more spirits and a wraith. You will then slide down and end up down a canal. Cut the rope attached to the boat and then press on the button on the side of the canal. Then, press on the button and ride the boat as the water rises. Go to the shrine afterwards.

Follow the path through the jungle ruins as you slay enemies and you’ll reach another shrine. Enter the cave beside the shrine to get a Health Upgrade . Exit the cave and go up the stairs to arrive at another symbol puzzle. There are another set of symbols translating to “body”, “enter”, and “direction” (from top to bottom). Match these symbols once more on the tablet and the tower will be rebuilt.

Go to the pressure plat on the far side of the area to rebuild the missing floor. Then, run towards the far right side to get the Young Thunder Artifact . There is another pressure plate in the same area in case the floor crumbles again. Head down the stairs on the other side to reach the next shrine. Then, head to the left side to get a Quiver Capacity Upgrade .

Continue moving to the right path, defeat the spirits, and then climb the long flights of stairs. Before climbing the last one to the top temple, check on the left side to get the Fire Thunder Artifact . Once you have collected every artifact, a new artifact will appear which is the complete statue of a Raijin .

Continue up the temple and to the right path while defeating the spirits. Climb up the ledge at the end of the path and head towards the left path to see another shrine and a Stamina Upgrade . Move towards the right path and through the enemies until you reach the base of the peak where the torii lies. In here, there are a couple of ammunitions that you can pick up to restock. There’s another shrine just up ahead and another boss fight to clear.

Shadow Sanjuro Attacks

Shadow Sanjuro 5 has main attacks and one non-damaging move:

  • Spear Whack : Shadow Sanjuro will whack his spear to the front and to the back. This has a very wide reach so it is recommended to roll towards him and take advantage of the i-frames, especially when trying to avoid the second attack. This attack can be interrupted with an attack just before it starts. When it gets interrupted, he will transition to a Triple Whack.
  • Triple Whack : He will whack his spear to the front, then to the back, and then to the front once more. Normally, he will initiate the attack when you are behind him, so you need to dodge the second attack, and then the third one by doing two consecutive rolls towards him (left to right or right to left). When done properly, you will have a good opening to land two heavy attacks after his third whack.
  • Shout : He will shout to push you back. This move does not deal any damage.
  • Charge : He will pause for a split second and push you far away, enough to knock you out of the arena if you are too close to the edge. Pay attention to the pause, and try to dodge towards him to avoid the pushback.
  • Whack and Swing : He will whack his spear and turn 180 degrees while swinging his spear. Best to dodge away.
  • Swing and Dive : He will swing his spear wide and then jump into the air and dive on to your position. Dodge towards him and try to reposition underneath him to prepare for a counterattack as he lands.

Tips on how to defeat Shadow Sanjuro

  • Your Bow and Arrow is a good way to deal some damage as long as you are far away, for example: when at the start of the fight or when he shouts and pushes you back. The Ozutsu is way too slow and is quite unreliable; use sparingly.
  • When doing the dodges, keep in mind to rest for a bit to replenish your stamina and prevent from getting fatigued mid combo or mid dodge.

After defeating Shadow Sanjuro, you’ll be once again given a chance to respond using these three choices:

  • Aiko is all that matters
  • I will find a way back
  • Kagerou took everything

These choices are connected to the ending, but they will not affect what ending you will get just yet. The ending will depend on what your choice will be after the final boss fight in Chapter 6 .

Chicago-area solar eclipse hunters plan trek south to take in totality: ‘You have to experience it’

Seven years ago, Reyes Sanchez stood with his girlfriend in downtown Carbondale, amazed by a solar eclipse turning day into night in a matter of seconds.

He was equally astonished to learn that day about another solar eclipse that would pass the exact same area in southern Illinois on April 8, 2024.

“We kind of joked about it, like we’ll end up together and we’ll come back again, and probably we’ll have kids by that time,” Sanchez said, “... and now it’s happening.”

Sanchez, his wife, Lorena Perez, and their 3-year-old daughter, Lorey, along with his brother’s family will leave their home in Riverside about 4 a.m. Monday to drive to Carbondale, take in the eclipse, then drive home.

It should take about five and a half hours to drive there, he said. Sanchez expects about an eight-hour trip home, plus he wants to find some souvenirs for his daughter to “look back on this experience” that he described as “extraordinary.”

“I’m pretty sure a lot of people are going to travel,” said Sanchez, a 34-year-old welder. “We’re planning to get some snacks, sodas, waters and everything so we only have to stop just to pump some gas and keep going.”

Around 100,000 to 200,000 people are expected to converge in southern Illinois for the phenomenon, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.

The eclipse’s path of totality, where the moon aligns perfectly with the sun and casts a shadow over Earth, will traverse about a quarter of the state, entering southern Illinois just after noon. Totality will begin about 2 p.m. and last about four minutes in Carbondale — in the crossroads of this year’s eclipse and the one in 2017.

Joshua Frieman, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at University of Chicago, and about 50 of his students will travel by bus to an eclipse event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Total eclipses aren’t rare — there’s about three each year somewhere on Earth — but it is “quite rare” for one to pass over the exact same area within as little as seven years. That typically happens “every few hundred years,” Frieman said.

Carbondale also lucked out in having one of the longest periods of totality in this year’s eclipse.

“The duration of what’s called totality — when the sun is completely blocked out — that varies from eclipse to eclipse, and it varies also along the path of the eclipse, and one thing exciting is that in Carbondale, the totality will last about four minutes, and that’s on the long end of typical solar eclipses,” Frieman said.

Maureen Joy, 66, of Batavia, is looking forward to witnessing totality for the first time.

“I’m interested to see what happens with the birds, you hear they think it’s nighttime, and the bugs and the crickets,” Joy said. “Just that feeling, some people say it’s just otherworldly when this happens.”

The retired teacher, with two friends, is loading up her RV and taking it to a shared campground in Pomona, about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, near the Shawnee National Forest, where the 75 people camping and a bluegrass band will generate the atmosphere of a small festival.

The stunning few minutes of totality is why Greg King, a police officer from Tinley Park, is going back again this year.

“I’ve had this event on my calendar since Aug. 22, 2017 — the day after the last one,” King said, adding that his one takeaway from the previous eclipse was, “You have to experience it.”

“If you have the ability to, you need to experience a complete solar eclipse,” King, 60, said.

He booked a hotel four months ago in Evansville, Indiana, for $140 a night, before room rates skyrocketed up to $500 per night. But he’ll drive about an hour west to Burnt Prairie, Illinois, a small village in northern White County, for the eclipse.

“My parents and grandparents, everybody’s from southern Illinois, so I’m very familiar with the area,” King said. “I think I should find a nice quiet, fairly secluded spot where there won’t be tens of thousands of other people.”

King drove down Wednesday night, then hopes to wait out traffic and drive home Tuesday.

One uncertainty, however, has most travelers crossing their fingers.

“Hopefully it’s not cloudy. If it is, then it’s just a big bust,” King said.

Monday's forecast for Carbondale is mostly sunny with a high of 73 degrees, but there is a slight chance of rain that night that has some people making backup plans.

Chris Chong, of Buffalo Grove, is continuing to keep his eyes on the forecast for southern Illinois and Indiana, as he has yet to choose a first-come, first-served campsite to pitch his tent. His tentative plan is to drive to the Carbondale area, but if the weather is poor, then he’s considering Indiana.

Chong, hearing how “magnificent” it is to witness an eclipse in totality, was swayed by other people online to make a “spur-of-the-moment” decision last week to road trip south for the event.

“I’m definitely trying to put myself out there in more unique situations I’m not very used to,” Chong, 30, said. “Not only is this my first road trip by myself, I’ve never been that far south in Illinois.”

“I just hope that this will be another way for me to experience new things,” Chong added. “Hopefully it’ll motivate me to do more of that in the future.”

Frieman, the professor, said this would be the year for Chicagoans to roadtrip to experience totality.

“The next total eclipse visible from the United States [Montana and North Dakota] or Canada won’t be until 2044, so this is the last opportunity for people in our region to see this without traveling long distances,” he said.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
