Staying in his own bubble, patrick cantlay outlasts bryson dechambeau in six-hole playoff to win wild and loud bmw championship, share this article.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Patrick Cantlay never blinked.

Amidst the waves of noise from the boisterous galleries on every hole and playing alongside the imposing, thundering force that is Bryson DeChambeau, an unhurried and unflappable Cantlay finally put an end to an instant classic at the BMW Championship by making a 17-footer for birdie on the sixth playoff hole at Caves Valley Golf Club to topple DeChambeau.

His back against the proverbial wall, including on the final three holes of regulation, the first three holes of a playoff and then on the fifth extra hole after DeChambeau hit first and knocked his wedge from 186 yards to 6 feet on the par-3 17th, Cantlay came up clutch every time.

After making putts for par on the 16 th from 9 feet and for bogey on the 17th from 8 feet, Cantlay rolled in a 21-footer for birdie on the 72 nd hole to force a playoff. After surviving three DeChambeau putts to end the playoff the first three holes, Cantlay followed DeChambeau’s brilliant tee shot on the fifth extra hole with a shot to inside three feet and both made birdie.

On the final hole, both found the fairway and Cantlay won the second FedEx Cup Playoffs event and his fifth PGA Tour title with his day-ending putt on the sixth extra hole in the fading light.

“I felt like I tried to stay in my own little world,” Cantlay said. “I’m just as focused as I can be. If I look the way I do, it’s because I am locked in and focused, and I felt like that today. My game feels really good. It has for a while now, since Memorial, and I’m finally starting to putt like me again.”

Cantlay gained 14.58 strokes on the field with his putting, the most strokes gained putting in a 72-hole event since tracking began on the PGA Tour in 2004. And he became the only player to win three times during the PGA Tour’s super season, adding to his victory in the 2020 Zozo Championship and the Memorial.

Both finished regulation at 27 under – Cantlay with rounds of 66-63-66-66, DeChambeau with rounds of 68-60-67-66. Cantlay made 31 birdies for the week while DeChambeau made 27 birdies and four eagles.

Conditions were so ripe for scoring all week that all 69 players in the field finished under par, the first time that’s happened in the history of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Because of the staggered scoring format used in the upcoming week’s Tour Championship, the playoffs finale, Cantlay will have a two-shot lead to start the first round at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

And Cantlay also secured a playing spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. His win made him the sixth automatic selection as qualifying came to an end and he joined Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, DeChambeau and Justin Thomas. Captain Steve Stricker will make six discretionary picks to fill out the team after The Tour Championship.

DeChambeau, who was a 6-foot putt shy of shooting 59 in the second round, could have won on the 72 nd hole but missed from 12 feet. He had chances to win on the first three playoff holes but missed from 17, 6 and 18 feet.

DeChambeau, trying to win his ninth title and third of the season, declined to be interviewed after the playoff.

Sungjae Im came home with a 67 to finish third at 23 under.

Rory McIlroy closed with a 67 to finish fourth at 22 under.

Erik Van Rooyen shot 65 to finish fifth. By making birdies on two of his final three holes, Van Rooyen jumped from 45 th to 27 th in the FedEx Cup standings, which, as one of the top 30, gets him to East Lake in Atlanta for The Tour Championship, the playoffs finale.

Sergio Garcia was the only other player to jump into the top 30, going from 44 th to 28 th with a final round 69 that left him in a tie for sixth with Dustin Johnson.

Charley Hoffman and Max Homa were the two players that fell out of the top 30.

Outdriven all day – DeChambeau hit 48 drives over 320 yards for the week – Cantlay stuck to his own blueprint, stayed in his own quiet world, and unleashed his own style of fireworks in toppling his playing partner in a playoff.

Cantlay isn’t exactly short – he is one of the game longest, straightest drivers – but his putter was almost magical. He made more than 537 feet of putts this week. He switched to a Scotty Cameron Phantom X5 he got at the Wells Fargo.

“Finally have one that feels absolutely perfect,” Cantlay said.

He could use the description for his demeanor, too.

“I’m as focused as I can be on every single shot, and I try not to let my mind get past the moment that I’m in, and maybe that’s why I come across a little sedated out there,” Cantlay said. “But I’m locked in, and I’m as focused as I can be. Then I kind of let the chips fall where they do. Try not to get caught up in being out-driven 45 yards or whatever it is. I just try and lock in and do my absolute best in that moment, and my best is pretty good.

“I’m a little tired but very happy. I played really well all week. At the beginning of the week I didn’t realize it would take that many under par to just force a playoff. But I hit a lot of good shots today, and it was just enough.”

Patrick Cantlay outlasts Bryson DeChambeau in epic Sunday duel at the BMW Championship

OWINGS MILLS, MARYLAND - AUGUST 29: Patrick Cantlay of the United States celebrates his birdie on the 18th green, the sixth playoff hole, on his way to defeating Bryson DeChambeau of the United States during the final round of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club on August 29, 2021 in Owings Mills, Maryland. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Even without winning a tournament prior to Sunday’s unforgettable showdown at the BMW Championship, this has been the Summer of Bryson on the PGA Tour. He’s dominated the news in every medium for what he’s said, what he hasn’t said, the beefs with players, caddies, his own equipment company and occasionally for his play, which has been both good and bad but never dull. So it was appropriate that the Summer of Bryson stretched through the final hours on the final weekend in August, continuing with him as much a part of the show even when he’s not holding a trophy.

That hardware went to Patrick Cantlay, who carried the reputation of not only a top-10 golfer in the world but a top-10 iceman on the course. That legend grew Sunday at Caves Valley, where the deadpan Cantlay got off the ropes time and again against DeChambeau both in regulation and throughout an exhilarating six-hole playoff.

There is an axiom in golf that the player plays the course and not an opponent. But it was fitting that in a week when the course was mostly defenseless for the best in the world, a true one-on-one clash made this BMW one of the most memorable tournaments in recent years on tour.

There are sudden-death playoffs that can become par-fest pillow fights. This one had a bunch of pars on the scorecards, but it was decidedly not that. It featured an all-world up-and-down par-save from Cantlay and a similar miracle save after a tee shot into a hazard by DeChambeau (who outdrove Cantlay by an average of 42 yards as they kept playing up the hill on the 18th). There were two absolute darts their third time through the par-3 17th for matching birdies, and fittingly, an almost-20-footer right in the heart of the cup on the 18th green, again by Cantlay, to decide it. The putt mirrored the one that kept him alive in regulation.

It was frenetic, with each playoff hole building on the previous one with unexpected turns and an unresolved championship.

MORE: Here’s the prize money payout for each golfer at the BMW Championship

Following Cantlay’s birdie putt from 18 feet, DeChambeau missed from nine feet to bring an end to a wild Sunday that barely beat the sunset in Baltimore. DeChambeau repeatedly burned the edges both at the end of regulation and throughout the playoff, with one incredulous reaction after another as he was unable to shake his newly christened Ryder Cup teammate . Cantlay had cause to be incredulous, too, as he gained 14.58 strokes on the greens, the most in the recorded history of that stat for a 72-hole PGA Tour event.

The result left DeChambeau stomping off into the night while Cantlay beamed about the “absolutely perfect” putter he put into his bag in the middle of last week after much testing and tinkering. “I’m finally starting to putt like me again,” he said on the 18th green after clinching the win.

Cantlay managed to stay focused on his own game, and not let DeChambeau and his power game distract him.

With DeChambeau as the foil and a FedEx Cup Playoffs event as the stage, the perception of Cantlay as this ice-cold executioner will only grow after what went down Sunday. This felt like a two-man battle at the start of the day, and it was for the full five hours.

It started on the first tee, where DeChambeau toyed with the assembled crowd that was imploring him to hit the big stick on the drivable (for a select few who walk the earth, at least) par 4. After a playful pump-fake iron pull from his caddie, DeChambeau did indeed pull out the driver and nuke one 343 yards into the greenside bunker. No one came close to that all day, with even big hitters like Rory McIlroy stepping off and hitting a lesser club 261 yards. The play left DeChambeau with an easy up-and-down birdie, while Cantlay, who put one out there 250 yards, poured in a 25-foot putt to keep them even.

The sequence previewed what would come over the next four-plus hours—one player mashing drives 340 yards, the other riding a hot putter to pile up birdies and escape from dire circumstances. Both continued to carve up a soft Caves Valley course where 27 under was not good enough to win outright.

The great burden of hitting it 30 and 40 yards past your opponent is that you’re almost always hitting second while he is trudging up behind you as you get over the ball. In the 14th fairway, this apparently came to a head for DeChambeau, who stepped off his ball and asked his playing partner to stop walking.

“He just wanted me to stop walking,” Cantlay said. “We had just been told by the rules officials to kind of speed up, and I'm not always the fastest walker, so I was trying to get ahead and do my part. No big deal; that stuff kind of happens every once in a while out here.”

It was a polite enough request, but certainly added a tinge of tension to a final pairing. The two did not seem to engage each other at all until it was over and the customary handshake required.

DeChambeau's putter went cold on the back nine as he had several chances to close out the victory only to keep the door open for Cantlay.

Even if there had been much chatter between them, it would have been hard to carry on given the din outside the ropes. The Baltimore area had not hosted a PGA Tour event in 60 years, and the Maryland crowd spent the weekend making up for lost time. There was a mix of support and antagonism for DeChambeau, which disrupted play at least once during the playoff as he was forced to back off an approach shot because someone shouted from high above the perches enclosing the 18th hole. Whether it had more to do with antipathy for his playing partner, or appreciation of their new iceman cometh, Cantlay felt support that he indicated he’d not heard on tour.

“These were some of the most supportive, loudest fans I've ever experienced,” he said.

When Cantlay stepped up to hit second over the final few holes, the crowd would almost rise up like he was a batter facing a 3-2 count in a key situation, encouraging him to match or exceed whatever his partner had done to keep the show going.

That was especially noticeable when they came through the par-3 17th the first time, where Cantlay did not match DeChambeau and hit his tee shot into the water. This was the moment where this BMW Championship could have gone another direction and wound up being just a fun little Sunday afternoon on tour rather than one of the signature moments in the 15-year history of this FedEx Cup Playoff format. We were headed for a steady and impressive multi-shot victory for DeChambeau, who was dry and had just taken a one-shot lead with a birdie and a fist-pump at the 16th. Cantlay, however, hit a low spinner from the drop zone and converted a clutch bogey putt while DeChambeau stubbed a chip to make his own unexpected bogey. Of all the clutch conversions, Cantlay cited that putt as the biggest.

“You know, I think the bogey save on 17 was a tricky little putt,” Cantlay said. “Obviously not the way I wanted to play that hole, but that kept me in the golf tournament, and it was a tricky putt, and saving just a bogey there and keeping me just one shot going into 18, that was a really big putt.” The bogey “save” not only enabled everything that came after but foreshadowed the kind of unexpected see-saw that was to come.

1337144069

Cantlay doesn't often show emotions on the course, but he was overcome by the support from the Caves Valley crowd.

Indeed, the next seven holes were a jolt for an event coming at the end of an extremely busy and long 12 months, which had Rory McIlroy sounding exhausted and uninspired for his tour’s playoffs. The FedEx Cup can be the subject of critique and confusion. It’s not perfect and may never have the stature its hosts hope to achieve. But what it does do is get the best players in the world in the same place at the same time playing for a lot of money. Every now and then, that will deliver and what we got Sunday was the player who has most dominated the headlines in the game for the past year up against an equal top-10 talent for a memorable tug of war. It was, perhaps, precisely the kind of spectacle these playoffs are designed to stage .

MORE: Charley Hoffman learns the hard way what happens when your FedEx Cup bubble bursts

It also may have delivered another star talent to market not for his emotion but captivating lack thereof. This was a tour de force for that deadpan Cantlay style one might consider boring, until you see it surgically dropping in putts all over the most controversial star in the game and sending him home grumpy.

“I'm locked in, and I'm as focused as I can be,” Cantlay said of that style. “Then I kind of let the chips fall where they do. Try not to get caught up in being out-driven 45 yards or whatever it is. I just try and lock in and do my absolute best in that moment, and my best is pretty good.”

There have been lofty predictions for the icy Cantlay and big things will continue to be expected of such a talent. More may come in the future that will add to that resume in higher stakes events, but it will be hard to top this performance in the moment against DeChambeau.

2021 BMW Championship leaderboard: Patrick Cantlay beats Bryson DeChambeau in epic playoff, tops FedEx Cup

Cantlay and dechambeau put on an absolute show sunday in maryland.

The summer of playoffs continued Sunday on the PGA Tour, but this one at the 2021 BMW Championship may have been the best of them all. Patrick Cantlay defeated Bryson DeChambeau in a wild six-hole playoff that included a bit of everything. This after the duo finished at 27 under in regulation, four clear of the rest of the field.

Cantlay now sits No. 1 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs standings with DeChambeau in third. Tony Finau, the winner of last week's The Northern Trust, will open the 2021 Tour Championship next Thursday between them.

Plenty happened Sunday, but a good place to jump into the action is on the 14th hole as Cantlay and DeChambeau separated from the pack. Before DeChambeau hit his approach shot, he turned to Cantlay and asked him to stop walking, presumably because it was a disruption as he was about to play his shot.

Cantlay banged a 22-footer on him shortly after that exchange, and the stakes at an already-elevated event were raised. The two best players in the field were noticeably cold toward one another coming home, which might not bode well for the U.S. team's Ryder Cup chances next month but made for a hell of a last two hours at this event.

Their next exchange came at the par-5 16th. DeChambeau birdied and offered  an unintentionally humorous fist pump . Cantlay looked like he was on the edge of teetering out of the tournament, but he nailed an 8-footer for par to stay one back. At the next hole, DeChambeau looked like he'd won it. Cantlay hit his tee shot in the water on the par-3 17th, and DeChambeau was safely up by the green. But the Big Golfer flubbed his chip, and Cantlay hit another 8-footer for par. Both made bogey, and Cantlay remained one back going to the 72nd hole.

Cantlay sent the tournament into a playoff with a 22-footer for birdie on that 72nd hole (which, it turns out, would be a bit of foreshadowing). What ensued was six holes of chaos. Over and again in the playoff, it looked like both players were buried. DeChambeau had a 6-footer to win on the second playoff hole but missed it. He hit it in the water on the fourth playoff hole and got up and down from 150 yards to stay alive. He hit it to 6 feet on the fifth playoff hole, but Cantlay dropped it it inside his ensuing putt (both made birdie). It was a redux of the Travelers Championship earlier this summer, which went an astounding eight playoff holes, but this one with two of the top 10 players in the world and a lot more on the line.

Cantlay got him in the end with, no surprise here, a long putt. He hit an 18-footer on the sixth playoff hole (the 18th hole on the course) to win his fifth PGA Tour event and third of the season (2020 Zozo Championship, 2021 Memorial). It was the perfect way to cap the greatest putting week in PGA Tour history . Cantlay gained 14.6 strokes with his putter over 72 holes of regulation, which was five more than DeChambeau and nearly eight more than anyone else in the field.

DeChambeau had so many chances, too. He missed five straight putts -- the last two holes of regulation and the first three holes of the playoff -- from 20 feet and in. Any of the five would have won the tournament. The fact that DeChambeau even went to a playoff is itself difficult to reconcile. On the week, he shot a 60, made 27 birdies, posted four eagles, sat first in the field in driving and second in putting, and incredibly did not win (either in regulation or thereafter). He became the first golfer ever to shoot 27 under or lower through 72 holes and lose on the PGA Tour.

It was legitimately impressive with how DeChambeau played Sunday. He's a good closer, but the last few opportunities have not gone that well, and he endured the greatest putting performance of the last two decades and still probably should have won. Despite the loss, that's a big-time response after the meltdown in Memphis at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Meanwhile, Cantlay is a nightmare. Just an absolute nightmare. He won't always drop putts like he did this week -- or on the back nine where he gained more strokes with his putter on Sunday than 80% of the field did the rest of the week -- but he doesn't have to. He can get you in myriad ways: tee to green, up and down from anywhere, and yes, from long distance as well. There's a quality he has that is rare among the best in the world. He seems to truly dislike guys he's battling. Whether that's real or simply for the sake of pumping himself up during competition, it has its benefits and makes for a tremendous show like we saw on Sunday at Caves Valley. Grade (for both): A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the BMW Championship.

Erik van Rooyen (5th): Van Rooyen was playing in the opposite-field Barracuda Championship a month ago, and now he's going to East Lake in 27th place in the FedEx Cup after a few absolutely stellar weeks. He finished seventh last week at The Northern Trust and fifth this week, and his reward is getting to play for $15 million at the Tour Championship. He did it with his irons at Caves Valley, and his final hole was emblematic of that. Van Rooyen, who finished first in the field in strokes gained on approach shots, absolutely stuck his last shot of the week to 3 feet and buried that to secure his spot in the last playoff event. Grade: A

Jon Rahm (T9): The No. 1 player in the world had a strange week. He started so hot and looked like he was going to be in the mix to win all weekend, but he faded pretty hard over the last 36 holes. Normally when that happens, it's a "well everybody else putted it better than I did" issue, but not this week. He finished top 10 in putting and T9 on the leaderboard. Normally when that happens, he's either going to win, place or show. There aren't really any concerns, and I'm still going to pick him again next week to win the Tour Championship, but this is actually slightly more concerning to me than when he faded in Round 4 of The Northern Trust on Monday. Grade: B

Tony Finau (T15): Following his win at The Northern Trust, Finau posted a 63 on Sunday at the BMW, which slotted him in the No. 2 position at the Tour Championship. His reward will be starting next week's event at 8 under under, two back of Cantlay's 10-under lead. This is turning into a huge month-long stretch for Finau with a win, potential contention for the FedEx Cup (along with its $15 million first-place prize) and now certain Ryder Cup appearance. After a year of playing below his baseline, it's nice to see him jump back into the picture at the very top of the sport. Grade: A

Of course Cantlay buried his putt for the win and Bryson missed. The only way it could end. What an afternoon.

Cantlay with a nice approach into 18 on the sixth playoff hole. He'll have 18 feet for birdie. Bryson is closer. Probably about 10 feet.

Bryson buries his 6-footer, and Cantlay has a 2-footer to cover him up, which he makes.

My goodness, Cantlay just put one inside of Bryson on the 17th after Bryson hit his to 6 feet.

DeChambeau and Cantlay averaged a birdie every 2.6 holes at the BMW Championship, yet we're now in the 5th playoff hole with eight pars between them to start.

Well, I lied. Bryson got up and down from his drop near the creek and Cantlay two-putted. On to a fifth (!!) playoff hole.

Bryson hits it in the water on No. 18, and this thing is over. I have a Vince Carter gif to erase.

Bryson lips out a birdie on 17, and we're off to 18. Unreal.

Bryson missed a 6-footer that would have won it. We're off to the 17th tee, which both players bogeyed in regulation. Bryson is inside of Cantlay.

Wow, Bryson just TWIRLED his approach on 18, and with good reason. He'll have a short one to end it, unless Cantlay makes a 54-footer which he probably will.

Cantlay has gained more strokes putting since the back nine started today than 80% of the field did for the entire week

Cantlay gets up and down after walking in a putt from just over 5 feet. We're headed back to a second playoff hole.

Bryson has a good look for the win on No. 18 as Cantlay is off the green and in the rough.

Unreal final two holes. They'll head back to 18 for the first playoff hole. Also of note: Their hand shake on 18 lasted about .00003 seconds.

Wow, Bryson missed on 18 which means we're heading to a playoff.

Wow, Cantlay holed out on 18 for birdie to tie it up at -28. Bryson has a putt to win.

Rory McIlroy registers 25th PGA Tour win at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Full list of wins explored

R ory McIlroy won the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Sunday with his teammate Shane Lowry. The Irish duo beat a stacked field to take McIlroy's 25th victory on the PGA Tour. He became the 26th golfer to claim at least 25 wins on the circuit.

It was the 34-year-old golfer's first win since the 2023 Scottish Open in 2023. With the win, the Northern Irishman moved up to 23rd on the Tour's all-time wins list. He shared the position with Tommy Armour, Johnny Miller and Macdonald Smith, who also have 25 victories on the Tour.

McIlroy has Henry Picard with 26 wins sitting above him on the PGA Tour winners list. It will be interesting to see if the ace golfer takes more wins this season and moves up the list.

Rory McIlroy's PGA Tour career wins

Rory McIlroy registered his first win on the PGA Tour in 2010 when he won the Quail Hollow Championship (now called the Wells Fargo Championship). The then 20-year-old shot a 62 in the final round to set a course record at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Notably, he became the first player since Tiger Woods to clinch a PGA Tour win before turning 21. He followed it up with a U.S. Open victory in 2011. The golfer now has four major championships to his name, including two PGA Championships in 2012 and 2014. However, the golfer has yet to win a Masters outing.

Listed below is the complete list of Rory McIlroy's PGA Tour wins:

  • 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans

It's pertinent to note that Rory McIlroy also has 11 international victories to his name. The golfer's first professional win came on the European Tour when he won the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009.

Since then, he has won the UBS Hong Kong Open and Shanghai Masters in 2011, the DP World Tour Championship in 2012, the Emirates Australian Open in 2013 and the BMW PGA Championship in 2014.

He won the DP World Tour Championship again in 2015 and followed it up with an Omega Dubai Desert Classic win the same year. He won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in 2016 before going on a winless drought which lasted for over six years.

The Irishman ended the winless run at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in 2023 and defended the title early this year.

Korn Ferry Tour

Frankie Capan III opens in 58, Miles Russell shoots 68 at Veritex Bank Championship

Miles Russell, 15, has played five rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour. He has shot under par in each one.

Russell opened the Veritex Bank Championship in 3-under 68, playing his first 17 holes bogey-free before a three-putt bogey at the par-5 18th hole Thursday at Texas Rangers Golf Club. Remarkably, he’s still outside the projected cut line; 79 players stand 4 under or better after the opening round, with the top 65 and ties making the 36-hole cut in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Russell, the reigning AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year, earned his spot at the Veritex Bank Championship with a T20 at last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, into which the left-handed Floridian received a sponsor exemption. He validated that spot and then some with four rounds under par – 66, 68, 70, 66 – to become the youngest player to record a top-25 finish on the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour, on record (since 1983).

Russell proved Thursday that his game travels well. After opening with eight straight pars in his afternoon round, he caught fire with birdies on Nos. 9, 11, 12 and 16. Although the day ended with a disappointing three-putt bogey from 25 feet at the finishing hole, missing a 4-footer for par, he’s well within striking distance of the cut line into Friday’s second round.

Russell will begin Friday 10 strokes back of leader Frankie Capan III, who shot a course-record, 13-under 58 in the opening round, matching the second-lowest score in Korn Ferry Tour history.

Here’s more from Thursday’s opening round at the Veritex Bank Championship:

  • Finished T8 at Final Stage of 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament (now PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry); he was one of eight players who advanced through each stage of Q-School, beginning with pre-qualifying, in 2022
  • Played two seasons at the University of Alabama (2018-20) and two seasons at Florida Gulf Coast University (2020-22), earning one victory and garnering All-Atlantic Sun Conference Second Team honors in 2021 and 2022 while at Florida Gulf Coast
  • Won back-to-back individual state titles at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division III Championships in 2017 and 2018, winning the latter by 10 strokes off the strength of a second-round 11-under 59 on the Sonoran Desert Course at Omni Tucson National Resort

Frankie Capan III on when a sub-60 round first entered his mind… “I'd say going to the back nine. When I turned at 6 (under par)… the front nine's playing at shorter than the back nine, so you might have a few more birdie opportunities. At the same time, I'm really just still trying to hit every shot, just stay really patient and present out there to where… it was on the radar, but I wasn't really focused too much on it. I actually forgot it was par 71. I thought it was par 72, so when I got to 13 I knew that, OK, there's 59. I shot 59 before, so I thought, you know, may as well break that. I didn't know it was par 71, but was really just trying to birdie No. 17, No. 18, but unfortunately didn't get either one. Yeah, made like an eight foot slider on 18 to shoot 58. It was pretty cool.”

Capan on his focus during the round… “I knew where I was at the whole time out there. I thought it was cool, it was fun, but at the same time like you're hitting those shots. I think that's the part I fell in love with the most is just enjoying being out there, hitting great golf shots. That to me is where I get the most joy. So instead of thinking about a number or anything like that, I just want to keep hitting great shots. Obviously going lower is a result of just staying present and hitting those great shots.”

Capan on what stuck out about his round… “I think the funny thing is I look back on my round and I actually didn't capitalize on a lot of the easy holes. Like No. 1, short par 4, didn't birdie. No. 7, really short par 4, didn't birdie. I just was always in the proper spot. I would say the best shot I hit all day, I had a 7 iron into No. 9, par 5, and hit it to like four feet. That was probably the best shot I hit, because I was in between clubs and the wind was kind of swirling off the left, so (I) was able to kind of flight a 7 iron in and stuff it in there and made eagle. It gave us a nice boost going to the back nine.

Additional Player Notes
