Michael Block says hole-in-one 'absolutely destroyed' the cup, soaks in finish

The pro from Mission Viejo will return to play in the 2024 PGA Championship.

All eyes were on an unlikely hero at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York, over the weekend where a California golf pro made history at the PGA Championship with his mind-boggling hole-in-one during the final round.

Michael Block, 46, slam dunked his shot off the 15th tee alongside Rory McIlroy, who hugged him and had to assure him it really went right in the hole.

"That's a brutal hole because you can't miss it right or left. Rory had just gone right before me and got a horrible kick, was in a really tough position," Block told "Good Morning America," reflecting on the tee shot less than 24 hours later. "I knew I had to hit a pretty good shot there."

He continued, "I didn't see it go in and all of a sudden Rory turns around and he starts walking back at me with his arms open to give me a hug. I'm like, 'Why in the world is Rory McIlroy giving me a hug right now -- did it go in?' He goes, 'Yeah, Block, it went in!' I couldn't believe it. To have it happen under those circumstances, coming down the stretch on the back nine on a Sunday in the PGA Championship with Rory McIlroy was an experience I'll never have again in my life and I'm gonna enjoy it."

PHOTO: Michael Block, PGA of America Club Professional, and Rory McIlroy congratulate each other on the 18th green during the final round of the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club on May 21, 2023 in Rochester, N.Y.

He added that the force of the ball "blew up the hole," making it difficult to pull out initially.

"The hole got just absolutely destroyed. The ball went directly in, it flew in the front of the cup, it never bounced or hit the pin or anything," Block said. "We had to take about five minutes. Rules officials had to come over. We had to get it fixed -- I have never had it happen like that in my life. It was crazy."

He became the first PGA club pro to make a hole-in-one at the PGA Championship since George Bowman in 1996, according to ESPN .

Fans at Block's hometown Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, where he teaches lessons, erupted in cheers as the crowds on the course boomed with excitement.

"The support that I have from Arroyo -- the management there has also allowed me to get out and play. And to be able to work on my game. I have got a great position -- I'm very, very lucky," he said. "I think I have got the best job in golf where I can come out and still play with the best players in the world, yet at the same time I can be at my house most of the time and have a steady job and steady pay check where I don't have to play golf to make a living."

Block sat tied for eighth going into Sunday's round, just six shots back from four-time major champion Brooks Koepka, and finished out his fairytale week with a final putt for par. The par save clinched a tie for 15th and gave him automatic entry into the 2024 PGA Championship.

"We were literally walking down fairways pinching ourselves," Block said of his weekend with caddie John Jackson. "I'm paired with Justin Rose on Saturday and Rory on Sunday. The crowd's just huge here in Rochester. Fans were amazing. Rory is walking ahead of us and I looked at my caddie and said, 'Is this even real?'"

Three holes after his remarkable ace, Block needed to make par on 18 to finish 15th and automatically qualify for next year's tournament.

"I honestly didn't know what it was for," he said of his final putt to close the day. "I didn't know where I was in position. I said I was not going to look at the scoreboards, even though they are all over the place and huge. ... I would not have made the putt if I knew. I'm happy with the fact that I didn't know."

Block sank the putt to finish with a 1-over 71 on Sunday and 1-over for the tournament.

In the 105 years of the PGA Championship, no PGA professional has ever finished inside the top 10. In 2005, Steve Schneiter was the last PGA pro to finish inside the top-40 at the tournament.

Earlier in the week, Block was already the talk of Twitter, as the only PGA professional to make the cut out of the 20 who qualified to play.

Koepka, who defected from the PGA to play for the rival Saudi-backed LIV Tour, took home his fifth major win.

"He walked off of 18 green, I was walking towards 18 -- [Koepka] told me that the first round [of drinks] was on me after that hole-in-one. He gave me a big hug," Block said. "I am very thrilled to be able to stand next to him during the final ceremony."

In addition to qualifying for next year's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky, Block also received a sponsor exemption to play in next week’s Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Block told "GMA" his biggest takeaway after this tournament is "you gotta be yourself."

"You play your best when you try to be just yourself. Don't try to be a tour pro. Don't try to be somebody you're not," he encouraged. "That's what I have been doing and it's really helped my game a ton. It's made the hole bigger."

Block continued, "I have always lived my whole life to where I want that hole to look as big as possible. Thank goodness this week at Oak Hill, it looked huge."

2023 PGA Championship, Michael Block

Michael Block isn’t finished winning over the Oak Hill Country Club fans as he slam dunked a hole-in-one on the par-3 15th. The ball didn’t roll in but went straight in on the fly. A hole in one is rare enough, but to do it that way is even more incredible.

Block couldn’t believe it either, and he kept saying, “No way. No Way. Rory, did that go in?” Yes, it went in and sent the crowd into a frenzy. As if his story couldn’t get any better, Block makes an ace to get back to even par in the tournament.

He has had some of the best luck this week, and the golf gods must want the world to see his story because the odds of making a hole-in-one are astronomical, but to make one on Championship Sunday at a major — who even knows. Block continues to show how much of a stud he is with his game. He is fighting hard despite a tough start to his final round.

CBS Sports wasn’t giving the Southern California pro much coverage , but they should now. With three holes to play, Block could be playing himself into next year’s PGA Championship and the history books.

He already became the first PGA Club Professional to enter the final round of a Major in the top 10. He’s looking to finish that way as well, and make history along the way.

He won over the people of Rochester, NY., the PGA Tour pros around him, and is showing the world who he is. It doesn’t get much better than an ace on a Sunday.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- PGA club pro Michael Block saw his ball falling to the par-3 15th green at Oak Hill Country Club in the final round of the 105th PGA Championship on Sunday. Then he heard the crowd roar.

"I hit a little flighted 7-iron," Block said. "It was going right at the pin. I knew I was in good shape, maybe 5 to 10 feet. The crowd went crazy because I thought I was close."

But then four-time major champion Rory McIlroy , his playing partner, turned around and walked toward him. McIlroy gave Block a hug.

"I'm like, 'Why is Rory giving me a hug?'" Block said. "Rory gives me a hug for hitting it 3, 4, 5 feet? That's weird. I'm like, 'I think I just made it.'"

Block, from Mission Viejo, California, asked McIlroy if he had made an ace.

"Yeah, it went in the hole," McIlroy said. "Right in the hole."

Block, who started the final round tied for eighth, had the only hole-in-one of the tournament when he aced the 151-yard 15th hole. His ball barely touched the green -- and somehow never hit the flag -- before slamming into the hole and sending fans into a frenzy.

When Block finally became convinced that he had aced the hole, he raised his black cap and waved it at the galleries. He high-fived McIlroy. Block walked onto the 15th green and grabbed his ball out of the cup, which had been damaged by his slam dunk. His caddie, John Jackson, said a big chunk of the right front corner of the cup was missing.

It was the first hole-in-one at the PGA Championship since Byeong Hun An 's ace on the 11th hole in the final round in 2020 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Block is the first PGA club pro to make a hole-in-one at the PGA Championship since George Bowman in 1996.

Brooks Koepka , who won his fifth major Sunday, said he heard the roar when he was walking up the par-5 13th.

"We heard the roar," Koepka said. "It sounded like a hole-in-one roar. We weren't sure, maybe someone holed out on 14. It was kind of coming from the same area."

Koepka asked one of the on-course camera operators who had made it.

"They told me that it was Mike," Koepka said. "I thought that was special. Me and [caddie] Rick [Elliott] were laughing about it. Yeah, drinks are on him, so run the tab up."

Block would probably be happy to pay the tab.

"To do it on that hole on this stage was a lifelong dream," Block said. "It can never get better. That's it. I can retire. Good night."

But Block won't be retiring anytime soon. Thanks to a nifty up-and-down on the 18th hole, Block finished in a tie for 15th at 1 over, which secured him a spot in next year's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. He'll also try to qualify for next month's U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club.

After Sunday's round concluded, the PGA Tour announced that Block will also compete in next week's Charles Schwab Challenge on a sponsor exemption, his fourth start of the season, as well as the RBC Canadian Open June 8-11, also by way of a sponsor's exemption.

"It was a week that I'll never forget," Block said. "My caddie and I would literally pinch each other while we walked down the fairway."

As the ball came down, it dunked into the hole for an ace, and the crowd went ballistic.

Block looked at his partner for the day, Rory McIlory, and asked, "Did that go in, Rory?"

McIlory, whom Block couldn't believe he was playing with after his Saturday round, nodded with a yes and his face said it all: He was amazed.

After pro’s hole in one at Genesis, his caddie is the bigger winner

Will Zalatoris, left, and caddie Joel Stock on Friday on the 14th hole at Riviera Country Club.

twitter.com

Will Zalatoris was sorry. Four years ago, he was swimming in holes in one. Five of ’em. Then the well, and his clubs, went dry. The pro apologized to Joel Stock, his caddie.

The aces would return, he said.

Promise.

“I was like, I’m going to make one sooner or later,” Zalatoris said.

You know where this is going. No, we wouldn’t be writing any of this if Zalatoris had come up short (or long or left or right) on Friday. That’s cruel. Yes, during the second round of the Genesis Invitational , Zalatoris had a 1 on his scorecard after playing the 184-yard, par-3 14th at Riviera Country Club in L.A. And it all had a small twist, too.

The shot was pure, though. A 7-iron that started a bit to the right, worked back left and dropped just over the left greenside bunker, onto the fringe of the green. His ball bounced a few times. It rolled. It found the hole’s center. From the tee, Stock thought it was tracking the whole way.

His man raised his arms. Zalatoris then ran over to Stock, who was left of the tee. He jumped in his arms. Stock picked him up. He carried him around. Careful! Zalatoris is working his way back from a back injury. He put him down, Zalatoris buzzed around some, and the two slapped hands.

“When the crowd went crazy,” Stock said, “we went crazy, too.”

He had the hole in one.

But they both had cars, too. One for the pro. One for the looper. This is the Genesis Invitational. The Genesis folks make cars. And every so often, events hand out keys to cars after holes in one. Notably, a Genesis was parked behind the 14th tee box.

Had Zalatoris ever won a car before? He noted he now had 10 total holes in one.

Nope, no cars.

“Made one in the U.S. Open which was pretty fun,” Zalatoris said, “but besides that, no. That’s definitely the most fun, for sure.”

Had Ben Crane , one of Stock’s former players, ever won him a car?

Nope, no cars for him, either.

“Just a bunch of Wyndham points at one time,” Stock said. “I just like seeing the hole in ones; that’s what excites me.”

Tiger Woods’ manager explains mysterious Riviera WD, ambulance chaos

Said Zalatoris: “He’s staying for free everywhere and he’s driving for free everywhere he wants to now, so pretty good.”

Indeed. There was more, though. In the post-round press conference, Golf Digest’s Christopher Powers said he had done some searching.

Stock’s car was worth a bit more than Zalatoris’.

Stock smiled.

Zalatoris shook his head and laughed.

“No, he can have it,” he said.

“Absolutely, he can have it.”

The hole-in-one drought had seemingly been forgotten.

Are There Any PGA Tour Pros Without a Hole in One?

Graeme Hay

Written by Graeme Hay | Last Updated: 12/03/2024

Bubba Watson hitting an iron from the fairway

In spite of the fact that he was able to drive the golf ball over 400 yards and win multiple PGA Tour events a 25-year-old Bryson DeChambeau had still never had a hole in one by the time he teed it up for the 2019 Masters.

He finally achieved his first ever hole in one however when he knocked in a 7-iron on the par-16th hole at Augusta but are there still any professionals out there without a hole in one or do most pro golfers have one?

There are no current PGA Tour players without a hole in one in their careers but a number of pros have never had an ace in tournament play. 16 out of the world’s top 50 golfers, including multiple major champions Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Bubba Watson and Brooks Koepka, have never had a hole-in-one in a PGA Tour event.

Given the skill levels of the elite pros and the supreme accuracy they have with their irons in particular it would be a highly unusual scenario for them not to record at least one hole in one across their long careers which can often span decades.

Indeed many professional golfers have been lucky enough (if you can call it luck!) to achieve the feat on many occasions.

But take a closer look at the hole in one stats and you will find that they are still not a common occurrence even amongst the best players in the world and that the pros themselves often only really care about the ones they have made in PGA Tour and other major tour events!

There Are Great Pros Without A PGA Tour Hole in One

A hole in one in golf – or an ‘ace’ as it is often referred to – is not a very common occurrence even amongst the best professional players in the world.

And a simple look at the basic dimensions of what the sport involves shows why.

The golf ball itself is only 1.68 inches or 42.67 millimetres in diameter and can weigh no more than 1.62 ounces or 45.93 grams.

To achieve a hole in one then requires a player to put that small ball in one shot into a hole, well over 100 yards and often over 200 yards away, which itself only 4.25 inches or 107.95 mm in diameter.

So as you can see it is not an easy thing to do even for the very best players in the world.

“A hole in one is great but it is like trying to find a unicorn, it’s very rare.” Jason Day, former USPGA Champion

And while virtually all pro golfers have had a hole in one a hole in one at some point in their golf careers the pros themselves tend to mainly care about the aces they have achieved on the PGA Tour or in other tournament play.

Dustin Johnson for example has had 13 holes in one since he started playing golf but says he only really counts and cares about the four he has achieved in tournaments.

Taking that as the benchmark, and the fact that there have been only 1726 holes in one recorded in professional golf tournaments since the first by Tom Morris Jr. in 1868, the stats show that there are a number of top pros who have never had a hole in one on the PGA Tour.

And the list of pros without a hole in one in a PGA Tour event includes:

  • Collin Morikawa
  • Cameron Smith
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Hideki Matsuyama
  • Billy Horschel
  • Brooks Koepka
  • Daniel Berger
  • Matt Fitzpatrick
  • Kevin Kisner
  • Talor Gooch
  • Russell Henley
  • Cameron Young
  • Lucas Herbert
  • Richard Bland
  • Bubba Watson.

Also while some pros have had the best possible start when it comes to achieving an ace on the PGA Tour event it does not always mean that their luck will continue.

For example on only the third day of his PGA Tour career world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who was only 17 at the time and still an amateur, aced the second hole at the 2014 Byron Nelson Championship.

But since then, despite his multiple PGA Tour wins and Masters triumph, he hasn’t managed to get another hole in one on Tour.

Given how difficult a feat a hole in one is to achieve for regular players amateurs may think it’s a bit rude of pros to only care about the aces they make in tournaments.

There is a good reason for this though. When PGA Tour players have a hole in one at events these days there tends to be a prize on offer and very frequently it is a prize which will benefit one of the fans or a charity.

At some tournaments multiple thousands of dollars are donated to charity on the successful player’s behalf while in others a pro’s ace will win one lucky fan a year’s worth of their mortgage payments.

And when Jason Day won a car for his hole in one at the 2017 BMW Championship he gave it away in return for the payment of a youngster’s college tuition!

Breakdown of Pros Hole in One Records on PGA Tour

When it comes to studying the games of the best golfers in the world we often focus on how far they hit the ball, how many putts they hole and of course how great their scores are but it is often fun to compare less common stuff like how many holes in one they have all had.

Being superb players who have played the game at the highest level, often for a long time, it is inevitable that some of them have had a large number of aces but the pros tend to focus on the number of holes in one they have had in tournament play versus the number they have had over their entire careers.

But when it comes to looking at those numbers even the top pros haven’t had as many holes in one as you may think.

So here is a detailed list of how many holes in one today’s top pros and some of the greatest players ever to play the game, including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson, have had in PGA Tour events.

Fun PGA Tour Hole in One Facts and Figures

Although holes in one are rare things even for the best players in the world there are still some pros who have managed to achieve the feat more than their fair share of times.

4-time PGA Tour winner Robert Allenby and former USPGA champion Hal Sutton hold the record for the most holes-in-one on the PGA Tour with 10 each. 1994 meanwhile is the year when the most holes in one were achieved in a single PGA Tour season with 44 aces being recorded.

And the records for holes in one don’t stop there and unbelievably some of the top pros have even managed to achieve an ace more than once in a single round.

even managed to achieve an ace more than once in a single round.

Brian Harman made two holes in one in the 4th round of the 2015 Barclays Tournament. After holing a 7-iron from 184 yards at the 3rd hole he hit a 4-hybrid 220 yards for his second hole-in-one in the same round at the 14th. Yusaku Miyazato and Bill Whedon are the only other golfers to achieve this feat in PGA Tour history.

Unbelievably Andrew Magee has also managed to get a hole in one at a par 4 in PGA Tournament play recording the ace at the 17th hole in round 1 of the Pheonix Open in 2001.

And some pros have even managed to kick off their PGA Tour careers by getting a hole in one in their very first professional start although one of the names on that list should probably not have suprised us too much looking back.

In his very first outing as a professional on the PGA Tour at the 1996 Greater Milwaukee Open Tiger Woods announced himself with a hole in one at the 14th hole of his 4th round!

Did you know: There have been five holes-in-one on par 5s (yes, par 5s!)

A hole in one might be the most sought-after accomplishment in golf. The unexpectedness. The out-of-nowhere jolt golfers feel when the ball finds the cup. The raucous celebrations that follow. There have even been aces made on par 4s, including on the PGA Tour (Andrew Magee, anyone?). But has there ever been a hole in one on a par 5?

Believe it or not, yes.

According to liveabout.com , it has occurred five times, with three of them coming on severe doglegs or horseshoe-shaped holes where the listed yardage could be mitigated by going at the green as the crow flies. A pair of par-5 aces, however, were made on mostly straight holes. Think of these guys as real-life versions of Happy Gilmore (yes, we know Happy is wielding his putter here but it was the only image of him available to us).

One of them was assisted by the altitude in Denver, as Mike Crean, a 4-handicapper, ripped a driver on the 517-yard ninth hole at Green Valley Ranch G.C. and found his ball in the hole when he reached the green. His feat came on July 4, 2002. Talk about fireworks!

Did you know: How the term "birdie" came to be

If an ace on a par 5 sounds a little fishy, well, Dick Hogan, who made one in 1973 on the eighth hole at Piedmont Crescent Golf Course in Burlington, N.C., isn’t about to argue with you as even he isn’t sure his ace is legitimate.

A scratch player who played at North Carolina State, Hogan hit a drive on the 456-yard hole and knew the ball would be somewhat close to the green. “That thing was like an interstate highway,” Hogan told the Times News in 2013 . “We were in a dry spell and the fairway was red clay. The ball just never stopped rolling.”

Still, after finding his ball in the hole, Hogan had suspicions. There were maintenance workers near the hole and none said a word—odd if they had witnessed the ball go in the hole. So whether it went in on its own or got an assist Hogan will never know. Oh, and this one also happened on July 4. What is it about July 4 and par-5 aces?

The first known condor (don’t ask us how it got this name, but it’s been used several times so we’ll go with it) was by Larry Bruce in 1962, who cut the corner on the sharp dogleg 480-yard fifth hole at Hope C.C. in Arkansas. Guess he still believes in a place called Hope.

One of the par-5 aces came Down Under in 2007, when Jack Bartlett banged one in on the 511-yard 17th at Royal Wentworth Falls C.C. in New South Wales, again cutting the corner on a sharp dogleg.

So, making an ace on a par 5 is a pretty big deal. But making one with a 3-iron? Yep.

In a 2004 article in Golf World by Bill Fields titled “The Rarest Bird,” Fields noted that a golfer named Shaun Lynch took dead aim at the green on the horseshoe-shaped 496-yard 17th at Teign Valley G.C. in Christow, England. Lynch took his shot up and over a 20-foot high hedge and his ball hit a sever downslope on the other side, sending it toward the green and in the cup. See? Nothing to it.

PGA Tour star wins car for himself and caddie after incredible hole-in-one

The Genesis Invitational awards the player and caddie responsible for the week's first ace through its title sponsor, Genesis, the luxury brand of manufacturer Hyundai

Will Zalatoris being lifted up by his caddie Joel Stock

  • Updated 20:21, 17 Feb 2024

Will Zalatoris won cars for himself and his caddie Joel Stock on the second day of the Genesis Invitational after hitting the first hole-in-one at Riviera Country Club this week.

Zalatoris, 27, aced the 184-yard par-3 14th hole during his second round in California . The 136mph tee shot landed on the front left edge of the green, bouncing three times before beginning its slow roll into the cup.

Cue the celebrations as Zalatoris threw his 7-iron into the air as Stock dropped his bag with his player bounding over for an embrace. The caddie lifted him off the ground as they soaked in the moment, taking adulation from the applauding gallery while knowing the significance of the achievement.

The ace, which Zalatoris counts as the 10th of his career, sees the three-time major runner-up receive a Genesis GV80. Meanwhile, his caddie Stock is the new owner of a Genesis Electrified GV70.

The shot flipped his round from one-over to one-under, making four bogeys and three birdies beforehand. After an opening round of 66, Zalatoris sits in a tie for sixth, seven shots short of controversial clubhouse leader Patrick Cantlay .

For all the latest on news, politics, sports, and showbiz from the USA, go to The Mirror US .

Explaining the shot after a one-under 70 round, Zalatoris recalled: "I think it was 180, pin back, into the wind, and we were just trying to hit it kind of right in the middle of that gap between the two bunkers. I just pulled it about 10 feet, and it landed perfectly on the fringe and killed it. Lucky to go in. It was a nice little bonus."

Zalatoris famously aced the seventh hole at Winged Foot in 2020 during the first round of the US Open but had been on a barren run by his standards as of late. "We've been talking about it,” he acknowledged. "I went through a stretch in like 2020 where I made like five, and I haven't made one since, so I was like, 'I'm going to make one sooner or later.'"

Stock shared that the conversation even came up earlier this week on Wednesday. “(He) holed a shot from the fairway on (hole No.) 3 in the pro-am,” the caddie said of his player. "And he jokingly said, 'The lid's off now' - so I guess it was."

He was previously caddie to five-time PGA Tour winner Ben Crane for ten years, then working with Cameron Tringale and Kevin Tway before agreeing to carry the bag for Zalatoris in the summer of 2022. Asked if Crane had ever won him something similar, Stock replied: “Not a car, just a bunch of Wyndham (hotel) points one time."

That came at the 2017 Wyndham Championship after his boss aced the prize hole. “I just like seeing the hole-in-ones; that's what excites me,” the caddie continued.

For Zalatoris, Stock is the real winner. He said: "He's staying for free everywhere, and he's driving for free everywhere he wants to now, so pretty good."

2024 RBC Heritage leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler nears fourth win in five starts with event to finish Monday

Weather prevented the final round from completing, but scheffler is well on his way to continuing his hot streak.

Scottie Scheffler's fourth victory in his last five tournaments will have to wait one more day. With the 2024 RBC Heritage experiencing more than a 2.5-hour weather delay Sunday, tournament action was unable to be completed before nightfall; it will instead leak into the work week. The final round at Harbour Town Golf Links will resume Monday at 8 a.m. ET with Scheffler holding a five-stroke lead at 20 under.

The world No. 1 is well clear of his nearest pursuer, Wyndham Clark, with three holes left in his tournament. Clark, meanwhile, is in the clubhouse at 15 under hoping for another runner-up check behind Scheffler. Others on the golf course like J.T. Poston, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala stand at that same number with holes to play.

Monday morning may only be a formality as Scheffler looks to be in control of just about everything -- like he has been the last two months.

Scheffler began Sunday in Hilton Head Island with one arm already slipped in the tartan jacket. Possessing a one-stroke lead, the Texan was crowned by many late Saturday evening despite the bevy of stars who had plans to upend him.

After knocking in a 6-foot par save on the 1st, Scheffler more or less turned those predictions into a reality. Chipping in for eagle on the par-5 2nd from long of the green (his 11th hole-out from off the green this season), Scheffler opened a three-stroke lead on the field and never looked back.

Charges were made by many, including a familiar foe in Clark, but none were that threatening. The reigning U.S. Open champion turned in 7-under 29 and tacked on another birdie on the 11th to get within one of Scheffler, but the pressure of perfection proved too much.

Hitting a tree with his second shot on No. 12, Clark's ball ricocheted out of bounds and led to a double bogey. Another dropped shot came on the following hole and all but secured another near miss from the U.S. Open champion.

Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, Cantlay and Theegala all hovered on the first page of the leaderboard but never truly threatened. Instead, it was Patrick Rodgers who emerged as Scheffler's greatest threat thanks to an eagle-2 at the turn. A bogey a few holes later put an end to his Cinderella story.

Remaining in the wake of mistakes was a spotless Scheffler at 19 under, four ahead of the field. Turning in 3 under, the steadiest man in the game marched forward with a heavy diet of fairways and greens before a spell of thunderstorms halted his momentum on the par-4 12th.

Inclement weather was all that could stop Scheffler as the 27-year-old returned to the golf course more than two hours later and resumed his round without a hitch. While temperatures cooled and winds freshened, Scheffler was unaffected.

He picked off a birdie on the 13th to push his lead to five before a mud ball on the 15th led to his second finding the water on the par 5. It didn't matter as Scheffler launched a pitching wedge onto the surface, spinning it left and utilizing the slope to access the tucked pin. He avoided what would have been his first dropped shot since the 3rd hole on Thursday with an emphatic par save, and he will sleep easy Sunday night knowing five strokes separate him from the field and three holes separate him from victory.

Rick Gehman, Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme discuss Scottie Scheffler's hold on the RBC Heritage, Nelly Korda's fifth straight victory and Miles Russell finishing top 25 as a 15 year old. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Play called for evening

The final group is on the green on the par-5 15th meaning they will have three holes to play on Monday. Scottie Scheffler faces a par putt from 10 feet to maintain his five-stroke lead as he stands at 20 under.

Five clear with five to go!

The only thing that can stop him is the sunlight at this rate. Scottie Scheffler adds a birdie on 13 to get to 20 under and five clear of the crew at 15 under. Without the world No. 1 this tournament would be very, very good, but alas they are all fighting for first flight honors it appears.

Conditions are considerably harder for these guys. The wind has switched, it's about 10 degrees cooler and they are racing against the clock. Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka make par on No. 12 and head to the par-4 13th. Wyndham Clark posts the clubhouse lead at 15 under, four behind Scheffler.

Let's play ball!

Players are on the golf course and play is set to resume. Scottie Scheffler in the final pairing has about 7.5 holes remaining and one hour until sunset meaning this thing is probably going to leak into Monday unfortunately.

Play to resume at 7 p.m.

Coverage information, play to resume at 6 p.m. et.

The expectation is this thing will be finished today as the range is open and play is set to resume in 40 minutes at 6 p.m. ET. This will leave Scottie Scheffler a couple hours to complete just about seven holes as he left off in the middle of the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under.

Play suspended due to weather

The horn has sounded at 4:28 p.m. ET as a large weather system (with lightning) has engulfed Harbour Town. This comes as Scottie Scheffler stands in the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under over a number of pursuers up ahead of him on the golf course. Players are being brought back into the clubhouse as rules officials make an assessment on when play will return.

Rain comin' down hard

Scheffler turns in 33 with three-stroke lead.

Scheffler lets a chance slide by on the short ninth and will instead settle for a 3-under 33 on his front nine. It was highlighted by his eagle-3 on the par-5 2nd and Scheffler will head to the back side with a three-stroke edge.

Theegala thriving

Theegala cards four 3s in a row to end his front nine and get within four of Scottie Scheffler. Sahith spoke yesterday about how cool it is what Scheffler is currently doing and how it is a motivating factor for someone like him to get better. It's a great perspective and Theegala continues to get better and better, but it may not be enough this week as he is four behind with nine to go.

A plan is in place for Rory McIlroy to rejoin the PGA Tour board, a move that would require the board’s approval and could be viewed as a chance to help to improve stalled negotiations with the Saudi financial backers of LIV Golf.

McIlroy resigned from the board in November , saying he felt he could no longer commit the time and energy required with the PGA Tour trying to finalize an agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

The deal with PIF was not finalized, and the PGA Tour instead took on Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor in a deal that could be worth as much as $3 billion.

Webb Simpson, one of the six player directors on the PGA Tour board and PGA Tour Enterprises board, has submitted a letter saying that he wants to resign as a player director but only if McIlroy replaces him, according to a person who has seen the letter.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the letter was not made public. The board is expected to discuss Simpson’s request as early as Wednesday.

PGA Tour Enterprises is the new commercial entity, though six players serve on both boards.

Jordan Spieth hits his tee shot on the fourth hole during the first round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Hilton Head, S.C. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

McIlroy’s resignation in November required the other five player directors — Simpson, Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Peter Malnati — to elect a player to serve out the term through 2024. They chose Jordan Spieth.

Some of those players have been at odds with McIlroy over the last few months because the four-time major champion has changed his tune about LIV Golf and has suggested LIV players be allowed to return to the PGA Tour without penalty.

Spieth and McIlroy disagreed in February over Spieth’s comments that a deal with PIF was not needed because of the SSG investment, although it would help with unification.

The Simpson case, however, is different. He has not resigned from the board. The person said Simpson’s letter said he would resign if McIlroy could replace him; otherwise, he would stay on the boards.

The person said Simpson indicated the board currently does not have a European player — five are Americans and Scott is Australian.

SSG in a consortium of American sports owners, led by the Fenway Group, and McIlroy has an affiliation with Fenway through the new TGL team league due to start play in January.

The Guardian, which first reported McIlroy’s potential move back to the board , also noted McIlroy has a good relationship with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor.

Al-Rumayyan met with the player directors — he even played nine holes with Woods — in the Bahamas a week after The Players Championship last month. Spieth described that meeting as a chance to talk while figuring out the next step.

There have been no reports of progress since then.

A London financial newspaper, City A.M., reported last week that LIV had offered McIlroy $850 million to join, based on sources it did not identify. McIlroy quickly shot down those rumors and said he would play the PGA Tour “for the rest of my career.” But he also reiterated his hopes that golf could be unified again outside the four majors.

“The game is better when we’re all together,” he said last week at the RBC Heritage.

The hurdle for any kind of a deal has been how to unify the game. Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson are among players who signed bonuses said to be worth upward of $100 million that led to the divide.

McIlroy said last month at The Players Championship that Al-Rumayyan “wants to do the right thing” for all of golf and that LIV Commissioner Greg Norman and others have done the PIF leader a disservice.

“So the closer that we can get to Yasir, PIF and hopefully finalize that investment, I think that will be a really good thing,” McIlroy said.

SSG’s initial investment of $1.5 billion is for a first-of-its-kind equity ownership program. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a February memo that $750 million in aggregate equity would be granted to 36 players based on career performance, last five-year performance and Player Impact Program results.

Those players are to learn details of how much they receive this week.

The First Look: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The First Look

Change Text Size

It’s time to team up.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the lone two-man team event on the PGA TOUR schedule and boasts plenty of the game’s best, with five of the top 15 players in the Official World Golf Ranking heading to TPC Louisiana.

This is the seventh year the tournament has been played as a team event, with each duo playing Four-ball (also known as best ball) in the first and third rounds, and Foursomes (alternate shot) for the second and fourth rounds.

With Presidents Cup pairs, Ryder Cup heroes, twins, fan favorites, college teammates, and more joining forces in NOLA it should be a special week.

This week marks the second of three events to earn points towards the Aon Swing 5 and Aon Next 10 as we inch closer to the next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule – the Wells Fargo Championship in two weeks.

Here’s everything you need to know as the TOUR returns to New Orleans.

FIELD NOTES: Rory McIlroy will make his tournament debut alongside good pal, Ryder Cup teammate, and Irishman Shane Lowry – a duo that was firmed up during a celebratory lunch after the Ryder Cup last fall… Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele will try to reprise their 2022 win here. Cantlay and Schauffele have both the Foursomes and Four-ball scoring records at this event… Davis Riley and Nick Hardy will defend their 2023 title. No team has gone back-to-back… Three sets of brothers (and two sets of twins!) will play together with twins Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard and Parker and Pierceson Coody in the field along with Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick . Alex Fitzpatrick and Rasmus Højgaard are sponsor invites… Billy Horschel , who won last week at the Corales Puntacana Championship, will be without his previous partner Sam Burns, as Burns and his wife are expecting their first child any day. Horschel will instead be paired with fellow University of Florida alum Tyson Alexander . Horschel has won the Zurich Classic when it was both an individual and team event… Other notable pairings include Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama, Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris , and Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. The Canadian duo finished runner-up a year ago and would like nothing more than to show Presidents Cup International Team captain Mike Weir how well they play together… Steve Stricker will play his second TOUR event this season (after earning his way into THE PLAYERS Championship), teaming up with Matt Kuchar. Stricker has four top-10s in five events on PGA TOUR Champions this season… Other sponsor exemptions include the South African pairing of Aldrich Potgieter and Thriston Lawrence . Potgieter, the winner of The Amateur Championship last year (the second youngest winner in the tournament’s history) won The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this season – the youngest winner in Korn Ferry Tour history. Lawrence, who has two runner-up finishes on the DP World Tour this season, made his 2024 TOUR debut last week at Corales (MC)… Jason Dufner and Kevin Chappell, Kevin Tway and Kelly Kraft, and Brandon Wu and James Nicholas are the other sponsor invites.

SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: The next Signature Event on the schedule is the Wells Fargo Championship… With his win at the Corales Puntacana Championship, Horschel tops the Aon Swing 5, which continues this week in New Orleans… Wesley Bryan, Tway, Charley Hoffman and Justin Lower make up the rest of the Aon Swing 5… The final event of the Aon Swing 5 prior to Quail Hollow is THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson… Justin Thomas’ T5 was his first top-10 finish on TOUR since February and in the process he moved from No. 14 to No. 6 in the Aon Next 10… Jake Knapp (No. 7) and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (No. 8) got bumped a spot. Austin Eckroat remained at No. 9 while Peter Malnati moved to No. 10. He leads No. 11 – Thomas Detry – by just 73 points… Ludvig Åberg remains on top of the Aon Next 10 followed by Matthieu Pavon . Zalatoris, Stephan Jaeger and Akshay Bhatia round out the rest of the Aon Next 10.

COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: With his fourth win in his last five TOUR starts, a three-shot triumph at the RBC Heritage, Scottie Scheffler remained atop the standings. Scheffler was the first player ranked No. 1 in the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10 to win the RBC Heritage and now leads by 2,023 points – the largest lead with 15 weeks left in the Regular season (since 2009)… Thanks to his solo second at the RBC Heritage, Theegala moved up to No. 4 in the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10. Cantlay finished T3 at Harbour Town and rose 13 spots from No. 23 to No. 10 in the standings. Cantlay was the only new entrant into the TOUR TOP 10 after last week… Chris Kirk and Byeong Hun An are the only two to remain in the TOUR TOP 10 every week so far this season.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 400 FedExCup points.

72-HOLE RECORD: 258, Hardy/Riley (2023)

FOURSOMES (ALTERNATE SHOT) RECORD: 63, Hadwin/Taylor (4th round, 2023), Cantlay/Schauffele (Round 2, 2023)

FOUR-BALL (BEST BALL) RECORD: 59, Cantlay/Schauffele (1st round, 2022).

LAST TIME: Riley and Hardy each won for the first time on the PGA TOUR. They birdied four of their final six holes – highlighted by Riley’s 30-foot birdie bomb on 17 – to win by two over Hadwin and Taylor. Riley and Hardy started the final round three shots back but fired a 7-under 65 in Foursomes to end the week with a new tournament scoring record of 30-under 258. Taylor and Hadwin, who grew up playing the same course near Vancouver, tied the Foursomes record of 9-under 63 (set earlier in the week by Cantlay and Schauffele) to zip into second alone. Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler, the 54-hole leaders, finished third, while Schauffele and Cantlay tied for fourth with Matthew NeSmith and Taylor Moore.
