Virginia Eastern Shore Map

Where is the eastern shore of va located.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia, a picturesque region on the Delmarva Peninsula, stretches for about 70 miles between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Located approximately 120 miles from Washington, DC, 140 miles from Baltimore, 220 miles from Newark, New Jersey, and 240 miles from New York City, it offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Counties on the Eastern Shore of VA

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is made up of two counties, Accomack and Northampton , located along the Atlantic coast. These counties are separate from the main part of Virginia in the United States. This 70-mile-long area is on the Delmarva Peninsula and is divided from the rest of Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay.

Cities on the Eastern Shore of Virginia

The number of towns on the Eastern Shore of Virginia can vary depending on how one defines a town. These areas of incorporated, and unincorporated communities and census-designated places (CDPs) contribute to the area’s charm and character.

What are census-designated places (CDPs)?

CDPs are areas with a lot of people living close together in small towns that don’t have an official government. These places are known by their local names and people in the community recognize them.

What is the difference between unincorporated and census-designated places?

A census-designated place is an area that doesn’t have set borders like a city or town, and it doesn’t have a working government like a city council. In these areas, the county usually takes care of things like police and firefighters.

Why would an area be unincorporated?

An area might be unincorporated for several reasons:

  • Population size: If the area has a small population, it might not have enough people to support the infrastructure and services of an incorporated town or city.
  • Rural nature: Unincorporated areas are often found in rural settings where there is a lot of open land and fewer people. These areas might not need or want the same level of services and regulations that come with being incorporated.
  • Financial reasons: Becoming an incorporated city or town can be expensive. Unincorporated areas might not have the financial resources to support the costs of establishing and maintaining a local government.
  • Local preferences: The people living in an unincorporated area might prefer the lower level of government involvement and fewer regulations that come with being unincorporated. They might value their independence and a more relaxed way of life.
  • Annexation concerns: Sometimes, unincorporated areas choose not to incorporate because they don’t want to be annexed by a nearby city or town, which could lead to changes in their community identity or property taxes.

Accomack County

Northampton county.

No. Eastern Virginia is not the same as the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Eastern Virginia includes Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Chesapeake, Hampton, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a 70-mile strip of land, situated on the southern end, or the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula.

It stands for Eastern Shore of Virginia

The Tangier Island accent originates from the early English settlers from southwestern England who arrived in the late 1600s and early 1700s. The island’s isolation has helped preserve and develop this unique accent over time.

No, you cannot drive to Tangier Island, as it is located in the Chesapeake Bay and not connected to the mainland by a bridge or road. The most common ways to reach Tangier Island are by taking a passenger ferry or a private boat.

The Tangier-Onancock Ferry makes daily runs from May through October. The boat ride takes about 1 hour each way, and the meeting location is at the Onancock Wharf. Departure time is usually at 7:30 am.

Eastern Shore of Virginia Bucket List: 12 Outdoorsy Things to Do

Like most avid travelers, I love exploring undiscovered gems and the 70-mile peninsula of the Eastern Shore of Virginia is surely one of them. This picturesque stretch has the Atlantic Ocean to one side and Chesapeake Bay on the other.

Settled in the 1600s, the Eastern Shore has preserved its old world charm and is filled with historical stories. But, there’s another side to the shore, a side that will have you suspended in the air on a hang glider or hiking through sand dunes to a secluded beach.

Eastern Shores of Virginia Bucket List: The Best Outdoorsy Things to Do

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is great for the history lover, but it’s also perfect for an outdoors fan like myself. With two coasts, six beaches, charming coastal towns and the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier islands on the East Coast, there’s plenty of adventure to be had. And adventure is my middle name. I had the pleasure of trying every single one of these experiences while I was down there and you know what, these are things I would highly recommend. Whether you err to the dare devil side or are a romantic who just wants to enjoy some peace and quiet as you sojourn with nature, the Eastern Shore of Virginia has it all.

You just need to get off Route 13, the main highway that runs the length of the shore, and explore the best outdoorsy things to do in the nooks and crannies of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

WHAT TO DO + SEE

1. see the ponies of chincoteague.

The story about how the Chincoteague Ponies came to be on these islands (Chincoteague and Assateague) is mired in mystery. Which only adds to their intrigue. There are two main theories:

  • Theory 1: These ponies were let loose on the island by early 17th Century settlers in an effort to avoid taxes and building expensive fences around their livestock.
  • Theory 2: These ponies are shipwreck survivors who found themselves marooned on these islands during that rampant 16th – 17th Century period when there were a remarkable number of shipwrecks along the mid-Atlantic Coastline.

No matter which theory excites you the most, taking a day off to bike or hike into the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge to try and spot these ponies will definitely be something worth writing home about. You can easily rent a bike at the Bike Depot .

While you are in Chincoteague, take the time to enjoy all the other attractions that it has to offer. From eclectic art galleries to some of the best homemade ice cream you will ever have at Island Creamery (try a scoop of the appropriately named Pony Tracks), this funky beach town will keep you busy and absolutely elated all day.

P.S: If you go in July, you can watch the ponies take their annual swim from Assateague to Chincoteague Island.

2. go hang gliding.

Have you ever had one of those dreams where you were a bird? Remember how free and liberated you felt? Well, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, you will get a chance to have that experience in real life and check something amazing off your bucket list  — Hang Gliding! It is one of the top adventurous things to do before you die . At Virginia Hang Gliding  there are a few things that they do differently: instead of jumping off a cliff, you will be towed up by a plane while strapped in tandem to a state-of-the-art glider with a professional hang gliding pilot.

Once you hit 2000 feet, 3200 feet, 4000 feet or a mile high (it all depends on how strongly your dare devil whispers into your ear), you will be set loose. From that moment on until you land, you will experience freedom like you have never known. Your pilot will go as crazy as you let him.

Tell him that you like roller coasters…I dare you!

3. Escape to Tangier Island

You know how they say there are some places in the Galapagos Islands or the Antarctic that have never felt the footprint of man? Well, you do not have to go to such extremes to feel like the last person on this planet. By simply taking a ferry out of Onancock , you can sail to Tangier Island , home to one of the most pristine and isolated beaches this side of the United States.

About 12 miles off the mainland, a visit to Tangier Island is like escaping to a different world all-together. It is a world where the friendly locals are recognized for their distinct British dialect, cars don’t exist and the casual restaurants are known for the soft shell blue crabs (get you fill at Fisherman’s Corner !).

Chesapeake Bay Program

4. hike the savage neck dunes.

The Savage Neck Dunes is something only the locals know about. And I am giving away the secret, because its beauty is meant to be experienced. An easy hike through a maritime forest leads to pristine sand dunes and a secluded beach (I was the only one there!). It’s completely FREE, so pack a picnic and a camera, and go.

This 300-acre preserve has to be one of the most secluded places in Virginia (outside of Tangier Island). On your hike, you will stumble upon miles of dunes, a mostly deserted beach and possibly some colorful butterflies or even a bald eagle.

Note: Spotting the parking lot on Savage Neck Drive is a little tricky due to limited signage and bad GPS directions. Look for the small gravel parking lot with a wide trail on the end. You can find directions here .

5. Drive Through the Tree Tunnel

On my way to Savage Neck Dunes (see #4), a wrong turn took me to an unexpected treasure. Don’t you just love when that happens? While heading west on Smith’s Beach Road in Eastville, I stumbled upon a tree tunnel so pretty that it deserved driving through multiple times.

6. Do a Multi-Day Kayak Trip

For a chance to experience excitement and tranquility (I know, that’s contradictory) take a multi-day kayak trip with Burnham Guides . Design a tour that will take you through the local marsh salts, barrier islands and National wildlife refuge or Nature Conservancy. They also have packages that include hang gliding!

Burnham Guides specializes in these multi-day tours, and from firsthand experience I can see why you’d need more than just one day. After kayaking for a few hours through the beautiful marsh we were taken to Holly Bluff Guest House , where a catered dinner was waiting — fresh crab and oysters!

If you are more interested in just a day trip or to rent a paddle board talk to Dave at Southeast Expeditions .

7. Paddle Board Through the Backyards of Onancock Creek

Onancock is a quaint colonial town with cute shops and delicious restaurants, but it’s best to explore it from the water. At the harbor you can easily rent a paddle board from Southeast Expeditions and then launch just steps away. If you prefer, they can also take you on guided nature tours for the day.

From the launching point you can explore multiple creeks and even take a peek into the backyards of the historic waterfront homes.

8. Relax on a Sandbar

Do like the locals and spend the day relaxing on a sandbar. Along the delightfully picture perfect Chesapeake Shore lay a few charming sandbars that want nothing else but for you to enjoy with family and friends.

Some of these Sandbars appear with low tide while others are always there. To get to one, you can simply rent a skiff or a Kayak out in Wachapreague and ask the good people there where you can find the best sandbar. Hint: a popular one is Dawson’s Shoal, a few miles east of Wachapregue.

Information about skiff and kayak rentals can be found here .

What + where to eat, 9. picnic with a slice of smith island cake.

They say that to know the people, you need to delve into their local cuisine. Well, having a slice of Smith Island Cake is just one way to experience more of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Though this cake is technically from Maryland’s Smith Island, the isle shares the Chesapeake Bay with the Eastern Shore, and that makes it a delicious tradition in both regions.

This delectable dessert is typically a whopping 8-10 layers of yellow cake and chocolate frosting. Though some shops are getting much more creative, making flavors like chocolate with peanut butter cream. Wash it down with a local cup of coffee from Eastern Shore Coastal Roasting .

You can pick one up at Becca’s Cakes or make your own using this recipe .

You will be the hit at any picnic if you show up with one of these cakes!

10. Snack on Crab Cakes on a Patio

What’s so special about having a crab cake on the Eastern Shore? It’s all about the freshness and no fillers attitude — the star is the crab! None of that 50-50 crab to bread crumb ratio.

You can find them just about anywhere in the region, but I did have a couple favorites. Both Mallards at the Wharf in Onancock and Island House in Wachapreague are award winning, and Annette approved! The “All Crab” Cakes at Mallards are made with nothin’ but crab and love. At Island House you can get them fried or broiled, I recommend the latter of the two. At both you have the option of sitting outside enjoying water views as you dine.

WHERE TO STAY

11. sleep in a cabin.

Nothing says outdoorsy quite like sleeping in a peaceful cabin on an island that can only be reached by boat or kayak. The Holly Bluff Guest House is a charming 12-person cabin on the island of Holly Bluff that would be perfect for a family reunion, girls trip or group gathering. There’s no electricity, just propane tanks and solar, but that only adds to the tranquil experience on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

If you book a kayak trip with Burnham Guides you will probably spend the night there, but you can also book on your own .

12. Kick Back the Porch of a B&B

There are cute B&B’s scattered throughout the Eastern Shore, many of which have gorgeous wrap-around porches that are perfect for relaxing after all your outdoorsy adventures in Virginia. Here’s two of my favorites:

Sleep at the Inn at Onancock

The Inn at Onancock has it all. Charming Victorian front outdoors, and a new puppy dog (who may be all grown up by the time you get there). It’s a walking distance to the quaint downtown and to Mallards at the Wharf (remember? the place with the famous crab cakes?). The pillows and bed were so comfortable that I had to tear it apart to see why!

Sleep at Cape Charles House Bed & Breakfast

Have you ever been to a Bed & Breakfast that feel just like home, or better yet, Grandma’s place? Cape Charles House Bed & Breakfast is one of those B&Bs that go out of their way to make you feel right at home while treating you like royalty at the same time. Carol is a distinguished cook who has written for a national cooking magazine and Bruce has a wonderfully tended garden where the kitchen gets most of its herbs. That should give you an idea of the kind of meals and homely treatment you will get while staying at the Cape Charles House Bed & Breakfast.

For something more hip and trendy, check into Hotel Cape Charles . It doesn’t have a porch, but they do have rooms with balconies.

places to visit on the eastern shore of virginia

From pristine, secluded beaches to wild horses, fish forward cuisine and some of the most beautiful natural scenes you have ever borne witness to, the Eastern Shore of Virginia has it all. If you are going to go down there, plan to go for several days so you can take it all in. But if you don’t have that kind of time, then just pick one experience from these wonderful outdoorsy things to do and go for it.

I heartily reccomend staying in Onancock during your adventure on the Eastern Shore. Its smack in the middle of the Shore, making it the perfect base to see the whole Shore. It is also the foodie capital of the Shore with many award winning restaurants.

Evening entertainment may consist of live theater, music or an old time movie theater.

There are numerous B&Bs in Onancock too. If you have children or dogs, check out the 1882 Colonial Manor Inn or the Spinning Wheel B&B. Luxury accomadations are at the Inn of Onancock. The Inn and Garden Cafe has its own restaurant and is across the street from Scoops, an icecream parlour.

All of the travel lodgings are Green Certified for guilt free travel. Onancock was the first municipality to have all green lodgings.

Not up for adventures like hang gliding? Onancock has several art galleries, museums and antique shops. Onancock was voted “the Coolest Town in the South” and the 11th Coolest Town in the USA by budget travel magazine.

Why You Need To Visit Virginia’s Eastern Shore

*a big thanks to virginia is for lovers for sponsoring my trip. great eastern shore getaways abound, and i was able to experience an incredible itinerary as part of their wanderlove campaign*.

Island hopping. Frozen pina coladas sipped while watching pastel sunsets. Kayaking out to sunken ships visible above the water.

No, I’m not talking about the Caribbean.

I’m talking about Virginia, specifically the state’s Eastern Shore.

This Virginia getaway is not your average seaside destination. Actually, its shore stretches for 70 miles, sitting between the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.

And you’ve got to cross the beautiful 17.5-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel to get to it.

This bridge-and-tunnel structure was touted as “one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world” by the American Society of Civil Engineers when it opened in 1964.

Unlike big city bridges that tower you above the water, driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel felt like I was gliding on water; so close I could almost touch it.

At sunset, this bridge is worth crossing just for fun. There’s a lookout point allowing you to stop and take photos near to the toll booth ($13) right before you reach your Eastern Shore getaway.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel

The best part?

Once you’ve crossed the bridge and emerged onto Virginia’s Eastern Shore, you’ll have stepped back in time. This is not only clear in the pace of life and the ability to visit historic mining towns and fishing villages, but also the way of life.

On Virginia’s Eastern Shore, there is a real focus on nature, conservation and working with what mother nature provides (vs taking it over).

In fact, most of the locals I met regularly caught their own seafood, and were passionate about projects that restored Virginia’s oyster beds and reduced plastic waste.

Want to experience this relaxing Virginia outdoors-focused destination for yourself?

Read my Virginia travel guide below to steal my unforgettable Eastern Shore itinerary!

Don’t forget to pin this post for later!

There are many Virginia destinations to choose from when planning a trip, though if you love active vacations you won't want to miss Virginia's Eastern Shore. Here, you can go island hopping, hang gliding, seafood catching, beach hiking and more. Eastern Shore Destinations

Virginia’s Eastern Shore is made up of two counties — Accomack and Northampton — which each feature a number of cities and towns.

A few of the most popular Eastern Shore destinations include:

  • Cape Charles. This was the base for my Eastern Shore getaway. There is so much to do here, whether you want to hike in a state park, visit a local brewery or distillery, shop at local boutiques or have a fresh seafood meal on the water at sunset.
  • Chincoteague Island.  Home to the namesake town of Chincoteague, as well as the wildlife-filled Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Wachapreague.  From this small farmland-hugged town it’s possible to explore Virginia’s barrier islands and wetlands.

eastern shore getaways

  • Onancock. Like with Cape Charles, you’ll find a number of natural attractions, a lively downtown district and a rich port town history. Additionally, Onancock is known for its gorgeous leafy green streets lined with Victorian homes.
  • Tangier Island.  Only accessible by plane or boat, Tangier Island is a quiet, mostly car-free island, and is often touted as the “softshell crab capital of the world”. They say the island is sinking, giving another reason to add this to your Eastern Shore getaway itinerary in the near future.

While you browse potential Eastern Shore getaways, you can use this handy dandy map to get yourself acquainted with the geography:

A Great Cape Charles Hotel Option: The Northampton Hotel

As mentioned above, there are many destinations to consider when researching Eastern Shore getaways; though I do recommend Cape Charles, as there is a lot to do right there.

So, how would I describe this waterfront Cape Charles hotel?

Laid back luxury in the comfort of one’s waterfront dwelling.

Interestingly, Cape Charles was a booming port town during WWI and WWII when troops would pass through.

Moreover, visitors would need to take the ferry to Cape Charles to pass through to what was then mainland Virginia.

When the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened, however, this was no longer needed. It wasn’t long before the hotel closed, left to decay.

That is, until May 2018, when it reopened as the opulent accommodation it is now.

eastern shore getaways northampton hotel

As soon as I stepped into the historic property, the many spacious (and Instagrammable!) common spaces made my jaw drop.

Upstairs is where you’ll find the guestrooms, as well as a few other special amenities. Some highlights:

  • A 24/7 pantry room filled with free snacks and beverages — as well as usage of a complimentary Nespresso machine
  • A hallway shelf filled with board games
  • The “Widow’s Walk,” a winding staircase that’s over 100 years old leading to a tower lookout with 360-degree views (the perfect place in Cape Charles to greet the day with your free Nespresso!)

eastern shore getaways northampton hotel

In my room, the giant balcony with porch swing was my favorite place to start the day, while the uber comfortable bed and plush rooms offered the perfect way to end it.

eastern shore getaways

Don’t miss a stop in their gift shop, filled with local postcards, gifts and edible goodies.

Also, from the end of June 2018, the property will also be hosting a weekend brunch — complete with brunch cocktails — on their giant porch.

Getting Around Virginia’s Eastern Store

Even if you’re just staying in Cape Charles, you’ll want to rent a car to get to the parks and natural attractions.

Your best bet for finding a great deal on a car rental is to use a comparison site, like this one .

Actually, you can save up to 70% on your rental vs simply choosing a rental car company and booking without comparing.

Virginia Eastern Shore Getaways: Things To Do

If you’re an active traveler researching options for Eastern Shore getaways in Virginia, look no further. I’ve got your perfect itinerary right here.

1. Go Island Hopping (Wachapreague)

Did you know that Virginia is home to the largest stretch of uninhabited barrier islands on the eastern seaboard?

In fact, I didn’t even know Virginia had islands to begin with.

My recommendation:

Begin your exploration of the islands at the Barrier Islands Center .

easrtern shore getaways barrier island center

Here, you can learn about the rich history of Virginia’s barrier islands. While they’re uninhabited today, a few of the them — especially Cobb Island and Hog Island — held hotels and were tourism hot spots.

Actually, many wealthy industrialists from the big cities up north would take the train down for their own Eastern Shore getaways, which ranged from hunting clubs to fishing trips to simply staying in immaculate hotels.

Unfortunately, the Depression combined with the powerful storms that followed led to locals literally picking up their houses and moving. In nearby Willis Wharf, you can actually visit Hog Island Lane, where these houses still sit.

At the Barrier Island Center, they’ve recreated many of the old hotel and hunting club spaces, using thousands of real and recreated artifacts.

eastern shore getaways barrier islands center

After visiting the center, take an island hopping trip around Virginia’s barrier islands with Captain Meriwether Payne of Seaside Ecotours (best contacted through her Facebook page or via email, [email protected] ).

Virginia’s barrier islands are home to over 250 bird species, and Captain Meriwether Payne can tell you about all of them.

eastern shore getaways virginia's barrier islands

On my trip, we spotted common terns, black skimmers, American bald eagles, and laughing gulls — a ton of them sitting on an island nesting and, not surprisingly, cackling with what sounded like laughter.

At one point, Captain Meriwether Payne let me out on Dawson Shoals — a large sandbar in Wachapreague Inlet — to explore the beach, my feet sinking into the soft sand.

eastern shore getaways

While there is almost no trace of the history that was here, there are a few remnants, like an old coastguard garage that’s now used by the Nature Conservancy for research, and a garden pavilion, now overgrown with sprawling vines, created by Mrs. Cobb for hotel guests on Cobb Island.

eastern shore getaways

You can let Captain Meriwether Payne know what you’d like to see, and she’ll create a custom itinerary for you.

After your tour, a great dining option is The Island House in Wachapreague.

Here, you’ll fill up on fresh seafood while taking in views of docked boats and scenic waterways.

This eatery is known for its soft-shell crab, a very popular seasonal dish in Virginia, and its crab cake sandwich.

Video by Chad Williams of Creative Visual Design for Virginia Is For Lover’s “WANDERLOVE” campaign

2. Explore The Many Eastern Shore Beaches (All Over)

The beaches of the barrier islands aren’t the only stretches of sand to lay out on.

Quite honestly, I felt like every time I turned around I saw another beach.

For instance, right across the street from the Northampton Hotel is Cape Charles Beach , where you won’t just find soft sand for beach-combing, but also a quiet fishing pier and, a bit farther down, volleyball nets.

If you like fun photo opportunities, you won’t want to miss the colorful “love” sign, too. In true coastal Virginia fashion, the sign is sea themed.

eastern shore getaways

Another great Virginia beach option:

The sister islands of Assateague and Chincoteague.

Within the over 14,000 acres of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge you’ll find wild landscape with lots of coastline to explore.

Moreover, it connects to the Assateague Island National Seashore, which stretches for 37 miles from Virginia to Maryland. The highlight of this beach is trying to spot wild ponies!

eastern shore getaways

3. Hike To Your Own Private Beach (Eastville)

Speaking of beaches, I’m adding another one to the list:

Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve.

There were a number of things that attracted me to this spot:

  • The name. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see up close how this park got such a title?
  • The promise of a unique mix of landscapes in a half-mile distance.
  • The fact that multiple locals told me it was their favorite park because “you can spend hours at the beach and see nobody.”

And so, I made the 25-minute drive from Cape Charles to Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve in Eastville, veering off from the highway onto quiet back roads as I got close.

I actually almost missed the small trailhead parking lot, backing the car up on the gravel road to turn in.

It didn’t look like much from there, but as soon as I stepped into the forest I was introduced to so many different elements in the span of 15 minutes:

  • The 4.6-acre freshwater Curtis Pond, an “interdune” pond home to frogs, turtles, fish and dragonflies
  • A green swamp that reminded me of something you’d see in Florida
  • A mix of forest ecosystems that ranged from coastal shrubs to maritime forest
  • Enormous sand dunes reaching heights of 50 feet that run for about one mile along the coast

The highlight, of course, is spilling out onto a white sand beach on the Chesapeake Bay.

And just like everyone promised, I had the beautiful Virginia beach all to myself.

4. Kayak To A Private Island & Spend The Night (Cape Charles)

Have you ever had a travel experience that’s awesome, both because it’s unique  and  because you feel like you got to truly hang out with locals?

That is what a kayaking trip with Mary and Bill Burnham of Burnham Guides is like.

Our group took off from the scenic Wise Point kayak launch within the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge in Cape Charles.

From there, we lowered ourselves into bright-colored sea kayaks, complete with back rudders for steering.

With the current, it took about 20-30 minutes to get to the day’s destination:

Holly Bluff, a private island with a 1920s fishing lodge that’s now an electricity-free guesthouse powered by propane.

The decor features wooden decoy ducks and humorous fishing quotes, as well as photos and artifacts from its past.

The Burnhams specialize in multi-day kayaking trips, and along with paddling to nearby Virginia barrier islands you’ll partake in beach picnics, al fresco yoga and chillin’ on the deck with wine under the stars.

Another highlight:

Learning how to catch your own seafood!

I usually dislike raw oysters, but the ones here were briny and delicious — made even tastier after I hammered them off the oyster bed myself!

5. Learn To Fly — Literally — Through Hang Gliding (Melfa)

Now, not everything on my Eastern Shore getaway was water focused. Actually, you can have aerial adventures, as well.

I’ve gone skydiving, bungee jumping and paragliding; but never have a I tried hang gliding.

One reason:

There aren’t a ton of places that I’ve seen offer it.

Which is why when I discovered Virginia Hang Gliding was located in Melfa — just 35 minutes from Cape Charles — I knew I had to try it.

I’m not going to lie, I was pretty nervous beforehand; though, the owner of the company, Don “Freeman Coyote” Guynn, helped dissipate my anxiety.

Not only is he a USHPA certified Tandem Hang Gliding Instructor, but also a master comedian, at least in my opinion.

eastern shore getaways

Once we were strapped into the glider, a small plane took off from the field where Virginia Hang Gliding is located, and we effortlessly floated into the clouds.

It wasn’t too jerky or too fast, but peaceful and calm.

That is, until Donn decided to do some sharp sideways maneuvers that felt like I was zooming upside on a roller coaster.

A roller coaster that’s over 5,000 feet in the air!

eastern shore getaways

Honestly, though, as soon as my stomach flipped, it was instantly (well, almost instantly) calmed by sights of the barrier islands, Chesapeake Bay, Tangier Island and the earth-colored plots below.

Out of all the aerial thrills I’ve had, this was by far the most serene.

6. Kayak Out To WWII Ghost Ships (Cape Charles)

Kiptopeke State Park is home to many outdoor Virginia activities, like hiking, fishing, beach-combing and camping, to name a few.

Probably the park’s most unique activity — and one I’ve never seen anywhere else — is kayaking out to nine ghost ships.

eastern shore getaways ghost ships

These giant concrete vessels acted as cargo ships during WWII. After they were decommissioned, the ships were lined up and sunk to create a breakwater barrier.

Now, the sight itself is neat, and somewhat strange, to look at from the shore; however, kayaking up to the ships offered an entirely new experience.

Numerous bird species flew out of the vessels, and I even saw a giant osprey nest atop one.

Sometimes, the birds got so close I felt like I could touch them.

Something else incredible:

A large dolphin pod breeching out of the water!

As the boats are deteriorating you do need to keep a 50-foot distance; however, even from there I could see through large openings in the hull; a weathered glimpse into the boat’s former life.

Entrance to the park is $5/vehicle.

7. Hike Virginia’s Beach-Inspired Trails (Cape Charles)

Also in Kiptopeke State Park’s 562 acres:

5.1 miles of hiking trails, mostly flat and woodsy, and many leading to beautiful beach lookouts.

eastern shore getaways

Many of the trails are short, but intersect with other paths, allowing you to hike for just a little, or longer if you prefer.

If you’d like to mix forest views with a secluded beach ending, opt for the Peregrine Boardwalk Trail. The short hike ends on a quiet sandy stretch that makes you feel like it’s all yours.

While hiking, I stumbled across an incredible retro sign.

Apparently, there was a motel in this spot during the 50s, way before the park opened in the 90s!

8. Shop Local In Cape Charles (Cape Charles)

I can definitely see why Coastal Living named Cape Charles one of the “Top 10 Happiest Seaside Towns.”

While “quaint” is an overused term, I’m using it here, because it’s just so darn accurate!

Locals and tourists ride golf carts down the street — often with their dogs riding shot gun.

You might also find them strolling the sidewalk full of “charming” stores.

Hey, these words just fit!

You don’t need a plan, and you can easily spend a few hours wandering the small locally-owned Cape Charles shops — no big chains here.

eastern shore getaways cape charles shopping

A few favorites:

Periwinkles. This women’s consignment shop offers chic clothing and accessories for really affordable prices, especially as you’ll find a number of name brands. New items arrive every single week, so there is always something new.

Love Letters. This breezy clothing store featured an explosion of pastel as soon as I walked in. Even if you don’t purchase anything, it’s a great stop for an instant happiness boost.

Like A Sailor. I was laughing out loud the entire time I was in this Spencer’s-esque local Cape Charles store. There are tons of inappropriate mugs, towels, t-shirts, books, games and more. As a cat lover, I think my favorite item was a coffee table book showing all the funny ways cats destroy our homes (but we love them anyway, because they’re so darn cute!).

eastern shore getaways cape charles shopping

The Cape Charles shopping options went well beyond just clothing stores.

In fact, there are a number of specialty stores, like Seagrass for floral home decor and terrariums, and Moonrise Jewelry where you’ll find lots of turquoise pieces.

Of course, in a town like Cape Charles you’ll have your quintessential beach shops; however, you won’t find cheesy cheap goods like in some areas.

Instead, local stores like Life on the Half Shell and The Boardwalk sell pretty wine glasses hand painted with fish, coastal scented candles and cards with sayings like “I love you to the beach and back.”

And finally, if you’re a fan of the arts, there are must-make stops like the Ellen Moore Gallery, the Lemontree Gallery and the Palace Theatre.

Along the way, make sure to cool down with a cone from Brown Dog Ice Cream .

eastern shore getaways cape charles ice cream

My flavor pick:

“Miss Josie’s Pretty Peas” laced with fresh local peas, mint, lemon, ricotta and avocado, topped with pistachios. I recommend getting it in a chocolate rim dipped cone!

9. Explore Cape Charles By Boat (Cape Charles)

Now, if you’re not feeling like paddling, or if you’d simply like a scenic sunset Cape Charles excursion, book a tour with Cape Charles Boat Tour Company .

While I explored Cape Charles thoroughly on foot, it was an entirely different experience exploring it from the water.

eastern shore getaways

Not only did I see places I’d already frequented — like the Northampton Hotel and The Shanty Restaurant —from a new vantage point, but also brand new sites like pastel-colored homes along the Cape Charles Beach, osprey nests atop wooden posts in the sea, mounds of oyster shells along the coast to be planted in the seabed and, the highlight, the gorgeous sunset from the water.

This Cape Charles tour is a must-have Eastern Shore experience, especially if you’re traveling with your significant other. Next time I visit, I’m taking my boyfriend!

10. Savor Scrumptious Local Seafood (Cape Charles)

Now, when researching options for Eastern Shore getaways — specifically dining options — you’ll come across tons of delicious eateries, many boasting fresh seafood.

Though you can savor scrumptious seafood anywhere on the Eastern Shore, the Cape Charles restaurants I experienced were some of my favorites from the trip. This was especially true when I was craving a sunset meal paired with a tiki beverage (which, let’s be honest, was pretty much every second).

A few memorable meals at the Cape Charles restaurants I visited include:

The Jackspot at Sunset Beach. Dining here was actually my very first Eastern Shore experience, right after driving across the wildly scenic Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel.

The Jackspot is the type of place you could eat at for every meal of your Virginia vacation and not get sick of it.

Not only is the food delicious, but it’s one of the top waterfront Cape Charles restaurants, not to be missed at sunset.

eastern shore getaways

In between nibbling on blackened tuna bites and Chesapeake shrimp tacos, you can sip a strawberry daiquiri while bopping your head to Pitbull and steel drum music.

You might also head down to the beach and rent kayaks, or play a game of corn hole with a view.

eastern shore getaways

On Saturday nights they feature live music, too!

The Shanty . This indoor-outdoor restaurant also delivered an epic sunset experience with my tasty tuna burger.

Sitting on the deck, pastel hues taking over the sky, was incredible; not to mention I got to try my first “Orange Crush,” invented in Virginia Beach .

While I’d heard of this cocktail before, they’re not popular in New York the way they are in coastal Virginia. The libation features fresh-squeezed orange juice, vodka, triple sec and lemon-lime soda.

eastern shore getaways

At The Shanty, they also offer creative twists on the drink, and you can get yours enhanced with grapefruit or cherry-lime.

The Shanty is walkable to The Northampton Hotel, so you can safely imbibe without needing a designated driver.

Hook-U-Up Gourmet (now Hook @ Harvey ).  Almost everyone I met on Virginia’s Eastern Shore told me that Hook-U-Up Gourmet was their absolute favorite eatery.

After dining at this Cape Charles restaurant for myself, I can see why.

Chef Timothy Brown is classically trained, and it shows in his dishes, which are mainly seafood focused.

While their menu changes weekly, some options when I went included pan seared jumbo scallops, fresh catch of mahi and a saffron-laced seafood fettuccine.

eastern shore getaways

They also typically have a seafood-stuffed pastry as an appetizer on the menu.

While the offerings are dominated by seafood, you’ll find other options, too. The rack of lamb rubbed with honey Dijon was delicious the night I visited.

Despite the upscale menu, the ambiance is casual, like with almost all other venues in Cape Charles. And they serve local wine to pair!

11. Drink Up Locally (Machipongo + Cape Charles)

When researching Virginia’s Eastern Shore getaways, you may decide you want to add some imbibing to really relax.

The good news:

No matter what your libation of choice is, the Eastern Shore makes it locally.

First of all, there is a local wine region, which has been growing grapes since the late 1970s/early 1980s. The main grapes of the region include chardonnay, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, with  Chatham Vineyards in Machipongo being the place to try them.

eastern shore getaways

If you like to mix your wine drinking with some activity, SouthEast Expeditions offers a kayaking wine-tasting trip that begins in the waterfront village of Bayford, down the Nassawadox Creek to Chatham Vineyards.

Not a wine drinker? No problem!

In Cape Charles, you’ll find the brand new Cape Charles Distillery crafting moonshine, whiskey and vodka. They also have a craft cocktail menu, and you can sip your drink on plush leather couches surrounded by boozy cocktail books and a chalkboard educating visitors on how liquor is made.

eastern shore getaways cape charles distillery

Within a five minute walk is also the Cape Charles Brewing Co. , which serves up two delicious IPAs, a pils and a stout, all inspired by the local Eastern Shore islands.

Finally, Buskey Cider on the Bay satiates the taste buds of those who love hard ciders.

12. Attend Popular Eastern Shore Virginia Events

If you’re Googling Eastern Shore getaways that align with a fun festival, this Virginia destination has many annual events.

Don’t miss:

Pony Polar Plunge (January).  This annual New Year’s Day tradition is all about jumping into the icy Atlantic — in your craziest costume, of course. The event offers the perfect opportunity to be a part of something quirky and local you’ll never forget.

Low Country Shrimp Boil (April). Attention foodies: This tasty festival is hosted by the Cape Charles Museum every year on the last Saturday in April. If you love all-you-can-eat seafood with the fixins’, don’t miss it.

Chincoteague Island Oyster Festival (October).  Coastal Virginia is known for its oyster heritage, which you can celebrate at this fun one-day festival where you’ll munch on raw oysters, steamed oysters, oyster fritters and more.

To help those planning their own Virginia Eastern Shore getaways, what experiences would you add to this list?

I didn’t know much about this area before, but now I definitely want to visit!

Clearly I didn’t take full advantage of living in Virginia (albeit I was in junior high at the time, but still). I didn’t even know about the eastern shore. Looks so idyllic with so much to do. thank you for all the great tips and ideas!

I love to sail and didn’t bring my own but found a sailing tour of Onancock. It was divine.

Wow, I never even considered Virginia for a holiday before – but it looks amazing! The tunnel alone is such a novelty – would be great to experience that! Thanks for sharing!

I love how in depth this is… I’d admit that I never really thought of visiting Virginia (I haven’t been to many places around the US, to be honest!). But this has definitely gone on my radar now. Your photos are stunning too! I haven’t tried apple pie moonshine before, should be interesting and would love to check out the cidery!

What a great blog!! So glad to see my happy place so well documented…photos are amazing. I also stayed at the Northhampton Hotel…spent Memorial Day weekend on that same swing…the sunrise and sunset view is killer! The town has made an incredible comeback these last 15 or so years…happy to see the attention it is getting from blogs like yours!

Your trip looks amazing. You’re so lucky! I really like the look of the Northampton hotel. It’s just the kind of place in like staying in – lots of history and atmosphere. I didn’t know Virginia had islands, so thanks for mentioning that! We are off to Barbados this month, but you have inspired me to visit Virginia now.

He Jessy thanks for this unique piece of inside info … the abandoned ship is really amazing

Before we visited Virginia I wasn’t sure what to expect. You paint a picture that is spot on with our experiences. We have wild horses where we are from in Nevada, but it was still fun to see wild ponies strolling up the beach on Assateague. We didn’t get to hang glide though! How exciting and terrifying at the same time. The retro sign you saw looks neat. One of my favorite things is finding odd things like old signs or a crazy looking building. Of all the states we have visited, Virginia is the one I often think about going back to for some more fun.

SOLD! Will definitely make a point to visit!

Virginia looks like such a diverse and green place! Hadn’t really thought about going there before, but well… Now I certainly must visit this gem!!!

Wow what an incredible post and amazing photos. Virginia was not really on my toplist for an USA roadtrip, but after reading this post it just made it on my wishlist. Thanks Jessie!

Welcome to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia

The "Eastern Shore" is the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay , and it includes parts of Maryland and Virginia. We include parts of Delaware here on this site too because it's all connected and part of what's known as the DelMarVa Peninisula.

Probably the best known Eastern Shore destinations are the beaches of Ocean City, Maryland and Chincoteague Island, Virginia. The beaches are great! But there's so much more to explore on the Shore. The region is characterized by tiny historic towns, meandering creeks, beautiful natural areas, great seafood, and lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Visit the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland for thoroughly charming good time.

Maryland's Eastern Shore

A visit to Maryland's Eastern Shore might include exploring the friendly shops in our little towns, biking through wilderness parks, kayaking on a creek, and eating crab cakes at seafood restaurants.

Maryland's Eastern Shore is connected to the rest of the state by the Bay Bridge , which crosses 4.5 miles of the Bay between Annapolis and Kent Island. If you don't want to cross the bridge, you'll need to drive up to the top ofthe Bay and back down through Delaware. The easiest and most enjoyable way to the Shore from New Jersey via the Lewes/Cape May Ferry .

From luxury resorts to quaint bed-and-breakfasts, there are plenty of places for you to spend a week or a weekend on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The Eastern Shore of Virginia

Chincoteague Island , Tangier Island , Onancock and Cape Charles are the tiny waterfront towns that attract the most visitors. You should see the seaside town of Wachapreague, and historic Accomac and Eastville too.

There are few crowds on Virginia's Eastern Shore and the pace is relaxed. But don't be fooled by this area's quiet nature. There's plenty to keep a visitor busy, you just need to know where to look.

The 17-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel crosses the mouth of the Bay from Virginia Beach to the southern tip of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Once you're here, it's easy to get around. Route 13 is the major north - south highway. But plan to get off the highway - the best of the region is definitely on the back roads.

Location/Getting Here

Maryland and Virginia's Eastern Shore occupy a peninsula of land that is bordered to the west by the Chesapeake Bay and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Folks visiting the Shore from Maryland tend to get here by way of Route 50, which crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the Annapolis/Kent Island area.

If you're coming from Delaware, you'll probably travel down Route 13 .

Visitors from New Jersey and points north can take the scenic route across the Delaware Bay on the Cape May/Lewes Ferry .

Places to Stay

Where you stay when visiting the Shore depends primarily on your personal preferences. There was a time when bed & breakfasts were your only option in the more rural parts of the Shore, but these days there are chain hotels scattered throughout the area. See our list of Eastern Shore Hotels .

The chains provide good, reliable accomodations, but don't overlook the comfort and charm of local bed & breakfasts, inns, and boutique hotels. These locally run operations are often your best bet if you want to truely experience the area's many small towns. See our list of Eastern Shore Bed & Breakfasts .

Campgrounds are also a popular option for those visiting the Shore. You'll find several good choices, ranging from state parks to waterfront campground resorts. See our list of Eastern Shore Campgrounds .

Eastern Shore residents love outdoor events and activities. From spring through fall, you'll find a variety of festivals and events that take advantage of the Shore's beautiful location and warm weather.

Check out our Eastern Shore Events calendar for information about local events you might enjoy.

Outdoor fun's not the only form of entertainment on the Shore. Visitors will find lively entertainment scene throughout the regions. Many towns have theaters or restaurants that regularly host live music. We provide a special listing of concert events here .

7 ways to enjoy the great outdoors on Virginia’s Eastern Shore

7 ways to enjoy the great outdoors on Virginia’s Eastern Shore

Isn't this beautiful?

This article is sponsored by Visit Eastern Shore, Virginia and Visit Virginia .

Virginia's Eastern Shore is like that friend who always has a cool idea for an adventure — unassuming, a bit off the beaten path, but packed with out-of-the-way stops and thrilling experiences. This strip of land, sandwiched between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, is a playground for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Here are seven ways you can soak up all the natural beauty and excitement this place has to offer.

Pony Watching Cruises: Wild and Wonderful

Kick off your Eastern Shore escapade with something straight out of a storybook by hopping on a pony-watching cruise. Wild ponies, descendants of shipwreck survivors (or are they? Ask your boat captain!), roaming free on Chincoteague Island — it's an almost magical scene. The cruises don’t just treat you to pony sightings; they’re also an open invitation to spot all sorts of wildlife, from birds to sea creatures. It’s a heartwarming introduction to the area’s natural charm.

Kayaking: Paddle Your Way to Peace

Ready to get a little closer to the water? Grab a kayak and glide through the Eastern Shore’s peaceful waterways. With endless creeks, bays and marshes, you're in for a treat. Whether you're slicing through the waters of Kiptopeke State Park or exploring the quiet inlets near Assateague National Seashore, kayaking here is like entering another world—a serene, stunning, paddle-powered adventure. It’s a chance to see the area's lush landscapes from a new angle, and maybe even make a few feathery or finned friends along the way.

Exploring: Tangier Island’s charms

This little slice of the past is tucked away in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, and you can only get there by boat or a small plane. You can walk around and stumble upon ancient graves, pop into a tiny museum or chill at cozy B&Bs, all with one of the East Coast's untouched beaches as your backdrop. And one of the biggest (and most fun) culture shocks? No cars! Golf carts are the transportation of choice. The ferries from Onancock in the warmer months and Crisfield year-round are your tickets to this little retreat. So, when you’re looking to unplug and step back into a world where life moves at the speed of a leisurely golf cart ride, Tangier's your go-to.

Hiking: Wander and Wonder

The Eastern Shore is a hiker’s dream, with trails that invite you to wander through coastal scenes, dense forests and everything in between. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, there’s a path here calling your name. Try the trails at the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge for a glimpse into the area's rich birdlife and diverse habitats. Or for something a bit different, hike the Wildlife Loop on the Chincoteauge National Wildlife Refuge and cut through to the northern end of the beach!

Fishing: Cast a Line into Adventure

When it comes to fishing, Virginia's Eastern Shore is the reel deal. Between the Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, the Shore is an angler's paradise. Whether you're casting off from a serene beach, a bustling pier or aboard a charter boat venturing into deeper waters, the variety of fishing experiences here is as vast as the open sea. From the bountiful Chesapeake Bay to the Atlantic's deep waters, each cast is a story waiting to happen. Grab your rod and tackle box and dive into a fishing adventure! (And while you’re fishing, check out some of the area’s best sunrise spots! )

Bird Watching: Friends of a Feather

Bird watching on the Eastern Shore is like attending a gala thrown by Mother Nature herself. It’s a superhighway for migratory birds, making it one of the best spots on the East Coast to witness the grandeur of avian migration. Whether you're a seasoned birder with a life list to boast about or someone who can't tell a sparrow from a swallow, the sheer diversity and number of birds passing through will captivate your imagination. The Eastern Shore's protected marshes, forests and coastal areas provide a sanctuary for the birds and anyone willing to pause, look up and marvel at the wonders of the winged world.

Beaching: Bask in Seaside Serenity

Find a slice of seaside serenity that feels worlds away from the crowded beach resorts and bustling boardwalks. Whether you're seeking a sunny day and eager to bask in the golden rays, a shell collector hunting for seaside treasures or simply someone looking to lose themselves in the pages of a good book with the sound of the sea as your soundtrack, the beaches of the Eastern Shore are your perfect backdrop. The sand between your toes, the salty breeze on your face and the horizon stretching endlessly before you create a sense of peace and freedom. It’s not just about spending time at the beach; it's about reconnecting with nature, with loved ones, or with yourself—the healing power of the sea, and the memories that linger long after the sand has been shaken from your shoes. On the Eastern Shore, beaching is your moment to discover the bliss of coastal living.

Virginia's Eastern Shore is more than just a destination; it’s an invitation to step outside, breathe in the fresh air and find your own adventure. Whether you’re watching wild ponies, kayaking through tranquil waters, exploring historic islands, discovering new trails or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of a secluded beach, this is a place that says, "Welcome, friend. Let’s have some fun."

Why Starkville was named the best small town in the South

This article is sponsored by Starkville, Miss.

The City of Starkville recently came in the top spot in USA Today's 2024 ranking of "Best Small Towns in the South," and if you've ever been to the charming Mississippi town, you can understand why. No matter when you visit Starkville or what your interests are, there's plenty to see and do during your stay. You can spend a day learning more about the region's history and culture at its many museums and historic sites, explore the city’s one-of-a-kind, award-winning Cotton District, try uniquely delicious dishes at scenic eateries and so much more. Of course, with so many options, the hardest part of your trip may be deciding what to do while you're there, and with that in mind, we thought we'd highlight some of the attractions, restaurants, shopping and more that makes Starkville one of USA Today's "Best Small Towns in the South" in the first place.

One thing the expert panel and readers who voted Starkville as one of USA Today’s “Best Small Towns in the South” recognize is that while it may be Home to Mississippi State University, it is so much more than a college town. There are a variety of museums covering a wide range of interests -- from music to geology and everything in-between -- that call Starkville home. The Charles H. Templeton Sr. Music Museum is perfect for music lovers thanks to its collection of more than 200 musical instruments while the Dunn-Seiler Geology Museum houses a diverse collection of rocks, fossils and even a triceratops skull. Then there's the Cullis and Gladys Wade Clock Museum that showcases more than 400 clocks and watches dating back as far as the 1700s as well as the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library , which has a state-of-the-art gallery as well as the largest private Abraham Lincoln collections ever assembled and so much more.

If you like to spend your time enjoying the gorgeous scenery of Starkville, you’ll have your pick of activities too. If you’re traveling with kids, the Music Trail at McKee Park is a must as it features playground versions of a soprano marimba, a tenor marimba, an alligator drum, a rain wheel and so much more for little ones to enjoy. You could also get in some exercise by enjoying a round of disc golf at J.L. King Park, which has a beginner-friendly disc golf course, or Chadwick Lake, which offers more challenging holes.

Of course, all that fun can really work up an appetite, which is likely why Starkville has more restaurants per capita than any other community in the state – likely another reason for why it garnered a spot on the “Best Small Towns in the South” list for 2024. From Southern classics to barbecue, burgers, fine dining and everything in-between, no matter what you’re craving, you’ll find it served in Starkville.

If you’re looking to grab a bite in Starkville’s iconic Cotton District , Bin 612 is the place to do it. With made-from-scratch pizzas, gourmet burgers, tacos and more on the menu, it offers a fun and casual atmosphere as well as plenty of outdoor seating perfect for people-watching. There’s also The Little Dooey if you’ve got a hankering for some serious barbecue. It has sandwiches, salads, platters, po-boys, tamales and more as well as signature items you can't find anywhere else, like The Little Dooey Sundae that consists of pulled pork layered with baked beans, coleslaw and barbecue sauce.

Another eatery that's been keeping locals and visitors alike coming back for more than 70 years is the Starkville Cafe thanks to its full menu of down-home Southern food -- including biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, country fried steak, shrimp po-boys and more -- served during breakfast and lunch. Meanwhile, 44 Prime is a fine dining restaurant and steakhouse in Starkville where you can enjoy everything from goat cheese fondue to lobster mac and cheese, crème brulee and so much more alongside your filet mignon or New York strip.

Every trip needs a souvenir (or two) to remember it by, and Starkville is full of local shopping spots that'll make finding them just as memorable. In historic downtown Starkville, there are plenty of unique stores and boutiques selling a variety of clothes and goods. At places like George-Mary’s , L.A. Green and Reed's offers up the latest trends no matter what your style is, stores like Liza Tye Company have a little bit of everything. In addition, several local shoppes cater to specific interests, including Disc and That , which has everything you need for your next round of disc golf, Scooter's Records , The Flower Company , Magnolia Soap and Bath Co ., and many more.

Of course, no shopping experience in Starkville would be complete without a visit to Mississippi State University's Cheese Store . Open Monday through Friday (and during home football games,) the store is known for its the Edam cheese cannonball, but it also sells an assortment of other cheeses as well as juices, condiments, jellies, coffee and more.

Broccoli Chicken Casserole

Southerners love a good broccoli chicken casserole, and we love quick and easy recipes we can pull out whenever they're needed, so naturally, we had to include this one by Debbie FoodPrepping as it manages to be both. In the video, she guides you through the cooking process and lets you know when to put it in the freezer if you're saving it for a rainy day.

Corned Beef and Cabbage Soup

When you have leftovers you don't want to go to waste, using them in a recipe and freezing it for later is always a good idea. This recipe for corned beef and cabbage soup by Easy Freezer Meals is a great example of that. And even if you don't have corned beef lying around, it's worth getting some just for this flavorful and freezer-friendly soup that reheats in only 10 minutes.

Sometimes it's nice to have an ingredient made ahead and packed away in the freezer so it can be added to different dishes as needed. That's certainly the case with these make ahead freezer meatballs by the Our Silver Moments YouTube page . You can eat 'em on their own or toss them into another dish you have in mind -- either way, having them ready to go in your freezer is a quick, easy and delicious way to get a hot meal on the table fast.

You don't always have a dessert lying around when the craving for something sweet kicks in, but if you have some of these make ahead and freeze brownies on stand-by, you will. This recipe, created by Little Village Homestead , make a big batch of made-from-scratch brownies, complete with icing and topped with walnuts, so that you'll have plenty to enjoy whenever your sweet tooth takes over.

Breakfast Sandwiches

Everyone wants something good to eat in the mornings, but no one really wants to spend a-whole-lot of time (or has a-whole-lot of time for that matter) making it. With these easy breakfast sandwiches by Natasha's Kitchen , you can keep 'em in the freezer and quickly warm 'em up and take 'em on the go whenever you want. Best of all, these sandwiches are customizable so you can swap out ingredients to make sure they're just as you like 'em.

Herb Roasted Potatoes

Sometimes we get so focused on our main dish we forget about the sides, which can be a whole process in itself. With this easy freezer recipe for herb roasted potatoes by the Little Village Homestead YouTube page though, that won't be a problem. They're the perfect side dish to break out anytime you're in need of something quick and easy that pairs well with just about anything.

Why the Square in Oxford is one of the South’s best gems

We love spending nights (and days) at the Square in Oxford, Mississippi!

This story is presented by Visit Oxford.

If you ask people what they love most about the Square in Oxford, Mississippi, chances are every person will give you a different answer.

That’s because the area has a little something for everyone, no matter what mood they’re in or what time of the day it is. It has a relaxed, low-key vibe, plenty of amazing food options, a fun nightlife scene, all of the shopping you’ll ever need and lots of history.

Whether you’re a grandma or a college student, you’ll love Oxford and the Square and should plan a getaway there soon. Let’s get into it.

The food. Oh, the food.

You’re not going to leave Oxford hungry, that’s for sure. The town is filled with world-class dining, and most of the best eateries are on the Square or nearby. Saint Leo is a must-try while in town, whether you enjoy it for brunch, lunch or dinner. The James Beard “Best New Restaurant” semifinalist serves wood-fired Italian fare that’s worth the trip alone. (Trust me on this one.) Don’t forget to order a cocktail with your meal – they’re almost as delightful as the pizzas.

City Grocery has been a Square favorite since 1992. Chef John Currence’s flagship restaurant is filled with delightful Southern fare. (You can never, ever go wrong with the shrimp and grits here.) Currence is also an owner of hotspot Boure , a slightly more casual approach than City Grocery. The restaurant serves Creole-inspired food like fried shrimp po-boys and crawfish and shrimp pot pie. Again, don’t overlook the drinks – the Lane Train (Four Roses bourbon, Cointreau, orange peels, lemon and bitters) and a pickle martini are both A+ options.

On gameday and any day, Ajax is a must. The diner serves hearty meat-and-three options, and after one bite you’ll understand why it’s an Oxford institution. Another unique option is SoLa . The small, cozy spot is known for its “twisted cuisine.” With options like ducky dumplings and mango dreamsicle cheesecake, you’ll find plenty of eclectic fare you won’t find elsewhere. (Make sure to make a phone reservation before your getaway.)

There’s plenty of great nightlife.

You’re not going to run out of after-hours fun in Oxford, that’s for sure. Proud Larry’s is known across the South as a premier small music venue, but it also has excellent food options (and a kids’ menu if you have little ‘uns with you). The Lyric is also a must-visit Southern entertainment venue – check out the schedule ahead of your visit to see if there’s a show happening during your getaway. Inside the Lyric's lobby is Bar Muse , a craft cocktail bar that's made a big name for itself. It was named one of Esquire's best bars in America in 2022. And we can't forget Funkys Pizza & Daiquiri Bar , a fun watering hole with drinks named the Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. (In fact, Perry herself had a great night at the cocktail bar after the 2014 Ole Miss-Bama football game.)

Oxford’s largest bar is the Library Sports Bar , which is divided into three parts: sports bar, dance hall and patio bar. (If you wanna relive your college days, try the purple Gatorade shot.) You can also head back The Sipp on South Lamar if you're looking for excellent after-dinner drinks. They've earned the Wine Spectator Award four times, and they feature drinks like the Saint Sipp and the Boo Radley.

Definitely carve out some time for shopping.

The Square might be one of the best shopping spots in the Southeast. One of the most famous bookstores in the country, Square Books, is a must-visit for any book lover and is right on the Square. The huge independent bookstore has been open since 1979 and between it and its sister bookstores, Off Square Books, Rare Square Books and Square Books, Jr., you’ll find everything you’re looking for and more. From rare vintage reads to children’s books to history tomes, you could spend a day looking through all the books there. (And if you have kids with you, you can try and catch a storytime at Square Books, Jr.)

Also on the Square? Neilson’s Department Store , which is the South’s oldest department store. It first opened shop in 1839 (making it the 16 th oldest store in the country) and is as popular as ever. The jeans at Blue Delta Jean Co. are sewn by hand in nearby Tupelo and are a unique gift. Boutiques like Cicada and LuLu’s Shoes and Accessories have plenty of unique offerings, and Katherine Beck sells jewelry, home goods and more.

The history

As you have probably already gathered, Oxford is filled with history. Blocks from the Square is Saint Peter’s Cemetery . Author William Faulkner is buried there, and people leave Jack Daniels on his tombstone in his honor. You can also take a photo with the Faulkner statue in the Square.

You can also tour the historic courthouse on the Square. It was built in 1872, after the original burned in 1864. Before you leave, check out the Mississippi Blues Trail marker – it highlights Oxford’s role in the blues.

Where to stay?

Want to stay near the action on the Square? You have a few options. The Graduate Oxford immerses you in Ole Miss lore and local history. The boutique hotel has furnishings so beautiful you’ll want to photograph them all. And check out the rooftop bar, the Coop , for the perfect view of Oxford sunsets. (And get a smashburger while you're at it.)

Another option is the Oliver Hotel . The recently revamped hotel has a speakeasy, Nightbird , and fine-dining restaurant Kingswood Restaurant and Bar , on site, and you don’t want to miss out on either of ‘em. (It also allows well-behaved dogs with a deposit if you'd like to bring your pooch with you!)

Imagine this: your vacation on the beautiful Eastern Shore is in full swing. You’ve explored charming towns, soaked up the sun on pristine beaches, and indulged in delicious local seafood. After all that activity, you might be craving a little rejuvenation. Well, fret no more! Skin Deep Spa, a brand new haven dedicated to pampering and self-care, is about to open its doors, offering the perfect opportunity to unwind and emerge feeling refreshed and radiant.

Excitement is brewing as Skin Deep Spa gears up for its grand opening on April 21st, 2024, at 1 PM. Located in the heart of Painter, this spa promises to be a haven for beauty enthusiasts seeking top-notch skincare, waxing, nails, and more.

Owner and licensed master esthetician, Hannah Parks, sat down with us to share her journey leading up to this exciting occasion. “I’ve always been passionate about beauty since childhood,” she begins. Despite not initially envisioning herself in the industry, Hannah pursued her passion by attending cosmetology school right after high school graduation in 2020.

However, it was during her time in cosmetology school that Hannah discovered her true calling lay in skincare and esthetics. “I flourished in esthetician school,” she shares, “It was where I truly found my passion.” Determined to excel further, Hannah Parks then pursued a master esthetician program, a competitive endeavor that she was fortunate enough to secure a spot in.

Graduating from the master esthetician program in May 2023, Hannah Parks emerged fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to embark on her professional journey. “I’m now a licensed master esthetician and cosmetologist,” she proudly declares. Offering a range of services including facial skincare, nails, full-body waxing, and spray tanning, Skin Deep Spa aims to cater to diverse beauty needs within the community.
