Ratings and Reviews

App stuck and can't purchase tickets.

I was able to make a purchase of one ticket which several times to do before it finally submitted. When I tried to do another purchase, I clicked tickets, picked my time and then hit buy now and kept being taken back to the results from my previous purchase. Tried refreshing, reload downloading the app and neither of that worked. Giving up on the app
It is impossible to delete or remove a ticket added to the basket. Worst experience.

Worst App Ever

I do t know where to begin. I would say that monkeys wrote this app, but that would be an insult to monkeys. When you click on 'tickets' to purchase your tickets, the app rarely finds a route even though the app itself has selected a route to and from your destination. After the app says it cannot find a route, it wants you to re-enter your travel info on a completely different screen. Once you do so, the app hangs and you have to exit the app and start this loop all over again. If, by some miracle, you advance after you click the tickets button to put in your seat preferences, etc., once you enter your email address and click "continue as guest", the app hangs. Why yes, I have tried registering. The app does not think my phone number is legitimate, which means you cannot register. I am trying to buy round trip tickets to Exeter. The app has been hung for the last 34 minutes. In 10 days (I installed the app 10 days ago), I have only been able to purchase tickets once. Horrible piece of work.

Introduction

Planning a train trip can be an exciting adventure, whether you’re traveling for leisure or exploring new destinations. Trains offer a unique and scenic way to experience the world, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey. From witnessing breathtaking landscapes to immersing yourself in local cultures, train travel offers an array of opportunities and experiences.

In this guide, we will walk you through the essential steps to plan a train trip, helping you make the most of your adventure from start to finish. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or embarking on your first train journey, these tips will help you navigate the logistics and ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience.

We’ll cover everything from choosing your destination and researching train routes, to booking tickets and preparing for your trip. We’ll also provide insights on how to navigate train stations and offer practical advice for maximizing your enjoyment along the way.

So, if you’re ready to embark on a train adventure and discover the wonders of the world from a different perspective, let’s dive into the steps and tips for planning your unforgettable train trip.

Step 1: Choosing your destination

Your train journey starts with selecting the perfect destination. Consider what type of experience you’re looking for – do you want to explore bustling cities, enjoy the tranquility of nature, or immerse yourself in cultural heritage? Once you have a general idea of the kind of destination you want to visit, it’s time to narrow down your options.

Research various train-friendly destinations and make a list of places that pique your interest. Consider factors like accessibility, train connections, and the overall travel experience. Think about whether you want to stay within your country or venture to a different part of the world.

Remember to assess any travel restrictions, visa requirements, or safety considerations for your chosen destinations. Check the local climate, attractions, and activities available in each location to ensure they align with your preferences.

Another important aspect to consider is the duration of your trip. If you have limited time, it might be wise to choose a destination that is easily accessible by train and offers a wealth of experiences within a shorter timeframe. On the other hand, if you have ample time, you can opt for a longer journey that allows you to explore multiple destinations along the way.

Take advantage of online travel resources, guidebooks, and travel forums to gather information and read reviews from fellow travelers. These resources can provide valuable insights into the unique characteristics and highlights of each destination, helping you make an informed decision.

Lastly, don’t forget to factor in your personal interests and passions. Are you a history enthusiast, a food lover, or an outdoor adventurer? Choose a destination that aligns with your interests, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in activities and attractions that excite you.

Now that you have a clearer idea of your preferred destination, it’s time to move on to the next step: researching train routes and schedules.

Step 2: Researching train routes and schedules

Once you have chosen your destination, it’s important to research the train routes and schedules available to reach your desired location. This step will help you plan your journey efficiently and ensure a smooth and convenient travel experience.

Start by identifying the main train stations in your departure and destination cities. Look for direct train connections if possible, as they will minimize travel time and potential transfers. However, if direct routes are not available, explore alternative routes and connections that can still get you to your destination effectively.

Utilize online resources such as official railway websites, travel apps, and search engines to access up-to-date train schedules and route information. These platforms can provide accurate and reliable data on train frequencies, travel durations, and any potential detours or disruptions.

Consider factors like peak travel seasons, public holidays, and special events, as they can impact train availability and ticket prices. If you’re flexible with your travel dates, you may have more options to choose from and potentially save money on tickets.

Take note of any specific train classes or seating options available on the route. Some trains offer different classes, such as first class or economy class, each with its own set of amenities and comfort levels. Evaluate your preferences and budget to select the most suitable option.

If you’re planning to make multiple stops along your journey or explore different destinations in the vicinity of your main target, research train connections and schedules for those as well. This will help you determine the feasibility of your itinerary and ensure you have enough time to explore each location.

Additionally, consider any scenic train routes that may be available. Scenic train rides can be a highlight of your journey, offering breathtaking views and a unique travel experience. Research these routes and decide if including them in your itinerary aligns with your interests and timeframe.

As you gather all the necessary information about train routes and schedules, start to visualize your journey and understand the logistics involved. This will set the foundation for the next step: booking your train tickets.

Step 3: Booking your tickets

Once you have researched the train routes and schedules for your desired destination, it’s time to book your train tickets. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons, as it ensures availability and allows you to secure the best fares.

Start by determining the best platform to book your tickets. Check official railway websites, online travel agencies, or mobile apps that specialize in train bookings. Compare prices and options across different platforms to find the most convenient and cost-effective solution.

Before making a final decision, consider any additional benefits or services offered by the booking platform. Some platforms may provide seat selection, travel insurance, or loyalty programs that can enhance your overall experience.

When selecting your seats, take into account your preferences and requirements. Do you prefer a window seat for scenic views or an aisle seat for more comfort and mobility? If you’re traveling in a group, ensure you can book adjacent seats for easy communication and interaction.

Consider whether you want a flexible or non-flexible ticket. Flexible tickets allow you to change your travel date or time with minimal or no additional fees. This option can be beneficial if your travel plans are subject to change or if you want the freedom to be spontaneous during your journey.

Keep in mind that some train journeys may require seat reservations in addition to the ticket. Seat reservations guarantee you a specific seat on a particular train, ensuring a hassle-free experience and avoiding any last-minute inconveniences.

Once you have selected your train, date, and seats, proceed with the booking process. Provide accurate personal information and payment details to complete the transaction. Double-check all the details before finalizing your purchase.

After booking your tickets, make sure to save or print your ticket confirmation. Familiarize yourself with any additional instructions provided by the booking platform, such as ticket collection procedures or e-ticket usage.

If you encounter any issues or have specific inquiries, reach out to the customer support of the booking platform or the train operator. They will be able to assist you with any concerns or provide clarifications on your booking.

With your train tickets in hand, you’re one step closer to embarking on your journey. The next step is to prepare and pack for your train trip.

Step 4: Packing and preparing for your trip

As your train trip approaches, it’s essential to pack and prepare accordingly to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

1. Check weather conditions: Take note of the weather forecast for your destination and pack appropriate clothing. Layering is a good strategy to be prepared for different temperatures during your journey.

2. Pack essentials: Bring necessary travel documents, including your ID, passport, train tickets, and any required visas. Don’t forget to bring a small bag or backpack for easy access to your belongings during the trip.

3. Comfortable attire: Opt for comfortable clothing and footwear that will allow you to move freely and relax during the journey. Avoid wearing overly restrictive or uncomfortable outfits.

4. Entertainment and essentials: Consider packing items to keep yourself entertained during the train ride. Pack a book, download movies or podcasts, or bring a travel-sized board game to enjoy during any downtime.

5. Snacks and water: While many trains have onboard dining options, it’s always a good idea to pack some snacks and a reusable water bottle for the journey. This ensures you have access to refreshments, especially on longer trips.

6. Travel amenities: Bring travel essentials such as a neck pillow, earplugs, and a sleep mask to ensure maximum comfort during rest periods. Additionally, bring chargers or power banks for your electronic devices.

7. Security measures: Keep your valuables secure by using a money belt or a concealed pouch. Avoid carrying excessive cash and consider dividing your money between different pockets or bags.

8. Medications and first aid kit: If you require any medication, make sure to bring an adequate supply for the duration of your trip. Additionally, carry a basic first aid kit for any minor health issues.

9. Research local customs and etiquette: Familiarize yourself with the cultural norms and etiquette of your destination. This will help you respect local traditions and interact with locals in a polite manner.

10. Double-check train details: Before departing, confirm the departure time, platform, and any other specific instructions for your train. Arrive at the station with plenty of time to spare to avoid rushing or potential delays.

By following these packing and preparation tips, you will be well-equipped for your train journey and can fully enjoy the experience. The next step is to navigate train stations smoothly and efficiently.

Step 5: Navigating train stations

Train stations can sometimes be busy and overwhelming, but with a little preparation, navigating them can be a breeze. Here are some tips to help you successfully navigate train stations:

1. Arrival and Departure boards: Check the arrival and departure boards for your train number, platform, and any updates or delays. Make sure to arrive at the station with enough time before your departure to avoid any last-minute stress.

2. Signage and Maps: Pay attention to signs and maps within the train station. They will guide you to ticket counters, platforms, restrooms, and other facilities. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the station to avoid confusion.

3. Ticket Validation: If you have a physical ticket, ensure it is validated before boarding the train. Look for the ticket validation machines or counters and follow the instructions provided.

4. Security Checks: Be prepared to go through security checks at larger train stations. Keep your bags easily accessible for inspection and follow any instructions given by the security personnel.

5. Luggage Storage: If you have larger or bulky luggage, check if there are luggage storage facilities available at the train station. This can be useful if you plan to explore the area before or after your train journey.

6. Help Desks and Information Centers: If you have any questions or need assistance, look for help desks or information centers within the train station. The staff will be able to provide you with directions, information about facilities, or address any concerns you may have.

7. Platform Etiquette: Pay attention to platform announcements and wait in the designated waiting area. Be mindful of other passengers and avoid blocking the pathway. Board the train calmly and in an orderly fashion.

8. Train Transfers: If you have transfers between trains, make sure to allow enough time between connections to avoid missing your next train. Consult timetables and station maps to familiarize yourself with the transfer process.

9. Communication: If you don’t speak the local language, it can be helpful to have a basic understanding of common phrases or carry a language translation app. This will aid in communicating with station staff or fellow passengers if needed.

10. Be Alert: As with any public space, it’s important to stay vigilant and keep an eye on your belongings. Be cautious of your surroundings and avoid displaying valuable items unnecessarily.

By following these tips, you’ll navigate train stations with confidence and ease, ensuring a stress-free start to your journey. Now, it’s time to board the train and enjoy the ride!

Step 6: Enjoying the journey

With all the planning and preparation behind you, it’s finally time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the train journey. Here are some tips to make the most of your experience:

1. Window Seat Delights: If you secured a window seat, take advantage of the scenic views outside. Keep your camera handy and capture the picturesque landscapes, quaint towns, and stunning vistas as the train traverses through different regions.

2. Socialize and Connect: Strike up conversations with fellow passengers. Train journeys often provide a unique opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures. Engage in friendly conversations or share travel stories to make your journey more memorable.

3. Dining and Refreshments: Make the most of onboard dining options. Treat yourself to local specialties or indulge in a delicious meal as you watch the world pass by. If the train doesn’t offer dining services, pack a picnic with snacks and enjoy it during your journey.

4. Entertainment and Relaxation: Take time to unwind during the journey. Enjoy a good book, listen to music, or watch movies to keep yourself entertained. Alternatively, simply sit back, close your eyes, and let the gentle rhythm of the train lull you into a state of relaxation.

5. Take Breaks at Stops: If your train makes stops along the way, consider getting off for a short break. Stretch your legs, explore the station area, or sample local treats available at the station. Just make sure to keep track of the train’s departure time and allow enough time to re-board.

6. Enjoy the Train Amenities: Many trains offer amenities like Wi-Fi, power outlets, and spacious seating. Take advantage of these facilities to stay connected, charge your electronic devices, and make yourself comfortable throughout the journey.

7. Immersive Experiences: Use the train journey to immerse yourself in the local culture. Learn a few phrases of the local language, read about the history and traditions of the regions you’re passing through, and try to observe the daily life of the people you encounter along the way.

8. Relaxation and Reflection: Train travel provides a peaceful and reflective environment. Use this time to disconnect from the fast-paced world and enjoy moments of tranquility. Reflect on your travel experiences, set intentions for your destination, or simply embrace the joy of being in the present moment.

9. Capture Memories: Don’t forget to capture memories of your train journey. Take photographs or keep a travel journal to document the beautiful moments and interesting encounters along the way. These mementos will serve as cherished reminders of your memorable train adventure.

10. Embrace the Unexpected: Sometimes, unexpected experiences or encounters occur during train journeys – delays, detours, or chance encounters. Embrace these moments as they add a touch of spontaneity and adventure to your trip. Adapt to changes with a positive mindset and enjoy the journey, no matter what unfolds.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to fully enjoy and embrace the unique experience of train travel. Cherish every moment of your journey as you make your way to your destination.

Planning and embarking on a train trip can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. From choosing your destination to immersing yourself in the joy of the journey, train travel offers a unique perspective on exploring the world. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can ensure a seamless and enjoyable train adventure.

Start by selecting a destination that aligns with your interests and preferences. Research train routes and schedules to determine the best options for reaching your destination. Once you have chosen your routes, book your tickets in advance to secure the best fares and seat options.

Packing and preparing for your trip is essential to ensure comfort and convenience. Remember to pack essentials, entertainment options, and any necessary travel documents. Familiarize yourself with train station layouts and navigate them with ease using signage, maps, and platform information.

Once aboard the train, embrace the journey and all it has to offer. Enjoy scenic views, socialize with fellow passengers, and savor delicious onboard meals. Take breaks at stops and immerse yourself in the local culture. Use the journey to relax, reflect, and unwind.

Remember to capture memories through photographs or a travel journal, and be open to unexpected adventures along the way. A Trans Pennine Express train shortly after departing Manchester Piccadilly station at dusk.

What is Labour’s plan for rail travel and will it make tickets cheaper?

Party wants to fully nationalise train network within five years of coming to power, in ‘biggest rail reform for a generation’

Labour has made one of its most radical proposals yet in the run-up to an election campaign: to fully nationalise the train network within five years of coming to power.

The party has pledged to guarantee the cheapest fares as part of “the biggest reform of our railways for a generation”, bringing all passenger rail into national ownership under the Great British Railways (GBR) body.

So, how difficult would the plan be to enact and what does it mean for passengers?

How would Labour’s plan for Great British Railways change the way the trains are run?

The headline change is nationalisation: the ambition that all passenger train operations, at least, should return to public ownership. But the wider aim is that control of trains and tracks – “wheels and steel”, as some put it – is brought back under one unified structure, at arm’s length from the government.

The actual railway infrastructure is already managed by the state-owned Network Rail, since the disastrous tenure of Railtrack in the early days of privatisation, and train operations in Scotland, Wales and a large chunk of England are in public ownership. So a fully renationalised railway (bar the rolling stock and freight) is not as big a step as it may once have sounded – and arguably the pragmatic extension of the plans drawn up by the Conservatives in 2021, to end the fragmentation and waste in the system.

How long will the changes take?

Labour said it would get the ball rolling on day one. Given the years it has taken for the Conservatives’ GBR plans to crystallise into a draft bill that has scant chance of passing before an election, supporters of the changes would be forgiven for not holding their breath for legislation. But some of the spadework has been done by the GBR transition team, and Labour will be hoping for a more stable tenancy in Downing Street to see the policy through. It is, it stresses, a long-term plan.

As far as nationalisation of the train operators goes, most of the contracts of remaining operators will expire naturally within the next term, while the government can exercise break clauses in others, such as Avanti West Coast and Cross Country.

What would the trains look like?

Eventually, they would all be GBR-branded trains rather than the individual liveries and logos of different operators. Labour hopes that this will make things simpler for passengers, avoiding confusion over ticketing, as well as cutting costs.

Would it make train travel cheaper?

Possibly, but not for a while yet. Labour says it wants to make the railway more affordable but has definitively avoided any pledges to cut or even freeze the overall level of fares.

However, it believes that its plans will eventually save £2.2bn a year by avoiding the duplication and bureaucracy brought on by the current system, where the Department for Transport tightly controls and specifies contracts for the private firms, and reams of staff are employed in back-end roles. That could give ministers some scope to use more of the billions in annual taxpayer subsidy to bring fares down long-term.

What about this best-price guarantee?

Make that an “ambition”, according to the policy document . It’s testament to the complexity, or occasional absurdity, of UK rail fares that even after years of industry focus on improving the system, renationalising looks an easier promise than telling a passenger they’ve paid the right amount.

Things can be improved, Labour says, as contactless tap-in and tap-out payments extend through more and more of the country, opening up the possibility of a Transport for London-style system, where fares are streamlined and automatically capped or refunded.

The shadow transport secretary, Louise Haigh, pointedly chose the headquarters of Trainline in central London to launch her plans on Thursday, paying tribute to the travel app firm’s “relentless focus on passengers [and] improving their experience”. Trainline shares fell 10%, even though Labour says it has no plans to replace the private firm with a single state retailer.

But given that the app’s business depends on people paying extra to cut through the railway’s confusing fares, fragmentation and lack of a decent central ticketing site, Trainline shareholder nerves might be taken as a vote of confidence that GBR will improve the industry’s own offering.

How else might passengers benefit?

Labour says it would leave the running of the railway to the experts – but the transport secretary would set strategy and take on the role of passenger-in-chief, and the industry would not be “marking its own homework”.

The plan aims to strengthen the voice of passengers by rolling together the various bodies currently meant to be standing up for them – the watchdog Transport Focus and the little-known Rail Ombudsman, as well as a few divisions of the Office of Rail and Road.

What will happen to the private operators?

Their representatives at Rail Partners warn that it will be “messy” and the railway will lose their expertise. But the people actually running train operators, right up to the managing directors, have typically stayed in post with a different coloured badge when the owning groups moved on, and passengers at say, Southeastern or LNER may not feel life is very different. Firms once regarded as pillars of privatised rail such as Stagecoach, National Express (now Mobico) and Virgin have long exited UK rail already, pursuing business elsewhere.

Google's update will bring up train times when you search for flights and let you quickly book a seat.

Train travel isn’t always the first option people think of when it comes to planning a trip. Part of that is awareness, and Google is doing their part to raise it in a big way with a new update to their Maps app. Soon, some travelers will be able to see information on train routes at a glance when they search for directions.

Google announced the changes last week in an initiative aimed at helping commuters and vacationers find more eco-friendly ways to get around.

“When it comes to traveling and commuting, we want people to have the right information to make more sustainable choices,” said James Byers, Group Product Manager for Google.

In 38 countries, including the U.S., you can already find train routes when you search specifically for them, but Google will be bringing up those options along with bus travel times when you search for flights . You’ll be able to see the ticket prices and schedules along with those times, as well as links that let you quickly book a seat.

Google trains search now shows schedule, prices

In 15 big cities around the globe, Google is taking those highlights a step further. When travelers search for driving directions, the results will bring up train travel times, bus routes and walking directions if those options are comparable. Berlin, London, Sydney, Montreal, Paris and Rome are among the metro areas where Maps users will see the changes in the next few weeks.

By and large, train travel has a far lower ecological impact than flying by plane. Studies have long shown that a fully-booked train puts out roughly half the emissions that a plane does, and that accounts for older trains that run on diesel fuel. Those that run on electric rail (like most Amtrak routes in the Northeast Corridor) reduce those impacts even further.

Pro tip for eco-conscious flyers: Google already lets you see carbon emission estimates on flights so that you can sort your options sustainably.

Next stop: Sound Transit East Line now links Bellevue to Redmond

Despite delays connecting the 2 Line to Seattle, hundreds rode the rails this weekend as the eight stations opened after years of construction.

Sound Transit’s long-anticipated East Link debuted over the weekend, connecting Bellevue with Redmond via light rail.

The train, which will eventually travel across Lake Washington, has been a long time in the works. The extension project, formally approved by voters in 2008, was expected to cost about $3.68 billion for the line. By next year, Sound Transit expects to connect Bellevue to Seattle – where Link Light Rail opened in 2009.

The current configuration of what’s called the 2 Line is expected to move about 6,000 riders between Bellevue and Redmond daily on trains with two cars each, according to the agency. That number is expected to rise once the connection to Seattle is completed. Currently, Eastside riders can connect between South Bellevue and Downtown Seattle via bus.

More expansions are coming in the next few years. Light rail connecting Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood to the existing 1 Line in Seattle is scheduled to open in the fall. Two more Eastside stations – Marymoor Village, next to the popular Marymoor Park, and Downtown Redmond – are anticipated to open next year.

Tracks run under a pedestrian overpass behind a window that with a "2" applied to it.

The original plan for East Link was for a mid-2023 opening, but construction delays pushed the opening date back one year . Then, plans to open this year all the way from Seattle to Redmond over the Interstate 90 bridge were derailed when the agency announced last year that the rail line’s I-90 supports had to be redone due to faulty concrete . That connection, which will include stations at Judkins Park and Mercer Island, is expected to open in 2025 at the same time as the Redmond stations.

King County Councilmember and Sound Transit board member Claudia Balducci said the agency opted to get use out of the completed stations, and perhaps give people who had never taken light rail the chance to experience it.

“Option 1 was to mothball the stations and pay for security for a year. Option 2 was to open it to the public and get some use out of it,” said Balducci, who pushed for the East Link partial opening.

Jay Inslee; Redmond Mayor Angela Birney; and Lynnwood Mayor Christine Frizzell at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of Sound Transit’s 2 Line light-rail service. (Jason Redmond for Cascade PBS)

Balducci also pointed out that the 1 Line between Tukwila and Seattle originally opened only between Tukwila International Boulevard and Westlake Station, with extensions to the south and north following in the decade afterward.

Balducci, who has been working on the East Link extension since she was a Bellevue City Councilmember in the late 2000s, said she was delighted to see the trains start moving.

“I’ve been working on this for almost two decades. All this work is finally turning into service,” she told Cascade PBS a few days before the official opening of the line.

Redmond Mayor Angela Birney said ever since the locations of the stations were identified, the city has approved multifamily housing and other amenities nearby to capitalize on the transit option.

“We put a lot of housing right around our stations and many of those families … would rather not use their cars. That’s intentionally that they moved to those areas. So I’m really excited for them to actually be able to get on the train and leave their cars behind,” Birney said.

The city also added two bike/pedestrian bridges for the Redmond stations.

“And so we’re really making another option for people to ride, bike, get on the train and get through the Eastside,” Birney said.

Hundreds of people attended the ribbon-cutting Saturday at the Downtown Bellevue station, despite the gray skies and cold rain, although many more boarded at other stations just to ride the rails. Royal-blue balloons and booths lined the station adjacent to the Bellevue Transit Center on Northeast Sixth Street near Meydenbauer Center, with local booths lined up as well as food trucks from local businesses.

Redmond resident Gary Fujioka boarded the train with his electric bike at the Redmond Technology Station on opening day and rode it south to celebrate.

“It’s busier than I thought it would be, but that’s a good thing. I’m surprised by the turnout; I hope all these people return and use it regularly,” Fujioka said. “Everybody should be open-minded to our public transportation in the region and I invite them to come out and try it, it’s much nicer than you think it is.”

Sound Transit says the trip between Redmond Technology Center near Microsoft and Bellevue Downtown should take about 10 minutes. The trains come by each station every 10 minutes seven days a week, from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Saturday public officials from Bellevue, Redmond and King County were in attendance alongside Gov. Jay Inslee and both U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray. Representatives from Microsoft and Amazon, which have built up their workforces on the Eastside over the past decades, also attended.

Attendees of all ages – from small children wearing Thomas the Tank Engine train conductor hats to groups of the elderly – came to the Bellevue downtown station to celebrate. Many took photos and videos to commemorate the opening of the line that took two decades to complete. Although it’s not yet connected to other regions around Puget Sound, people traveled from Mercer Island or Seattle and even as far as Vancouver, B.C., to experience the moment.

People crowded each station entrance to watch the ribbon-cutting and cheered all the way down the tracks as two trains pulled in. Riders were excited as they filled cars, many with no specific destination in mind.

Most riders were taking the train to enjoy the journey, or to stop at each station and look at the artwork, only to hop on the next train and repeat the process across the eight stations.

Jenny Pai and her family drove down from Bothell for the event. Her family wanted to take the line for an adventure. Pai said that if more lines open, she’d be open to taking the train to work.

Like Pai, retiree Sand Stron from Mercer Island came for the opening day just to travel south to north and vice versa to his parking spot in the South Bellevue parking garage.

“I think this is an important thing for our region and we’re looking forward to it coming from Mercer Island. We’ll probably use the transit a lot.”

University of Washington student Yoshi Takano came with a group of 25 from the university chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, a group passionate about improving transportation in the state. Takano said attendees from the University of Oregon also came for the opening day. The groups were going up and down the line, stopping at each station to explore.

“There’s been construction delays and I think that’s frustrating, but I’m glad they were able to open this segment. I think they wanted to be able to show voters that their tax dollars are going to something that’s positive and show the benefits of the light rail,” Takano said.

He hopes that people will continue to use it regularly, but worries that they’ll still opt to drive instead due to the abundance of parking in Bellevue.

“But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a failure, it’s a product of past policies and it’ll require additional new development and as they finish the line to Seattle; I think ridership can increase,” Takano said.
