World Mixed Doubles draw

The 2023 Players Championship commences on Monday with 16 of the best players in the world from this season in the draw.

The Welsh Open won’t even be 24 hours old by the time the action in this week’s ranking event gets under way in Wolverhampton.

A tournament featuring the most consistent players from the 2022/23 season, there is bound to be a lot of good snooker being played at the Aldersley Arena.

Prize, history, and format

In its current guise, the Players Championship has been around since 2017, but the competition evolved from a previous incarnation as the Players Tour Championship Grand Finals that ran between 2011 and 2016.

For the first six editions, the line-up was determined by the order of merit on the now defunct minor-ranking PTC series.

During those years, there were six different winners including the inaugural champion Shaun Murphy, Ding Junhui, and Mark Allen.

However, since 2017 the event was altered to boast the top-16 earners on the one-year rankings list overall, with Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump sharing two wins apiece from the first four stagings.

In 2021, John Higgins ended that sequence with one of the most dominant ever tournament displays, while Neil Robertson sealed glory twelve months ago.

The format is similar to that incorporated for the Masters, with best-of-11 fixtures utilised for the first three rounds before a 19-frame final showdown for the silverware.

Offering a top prize worth £125,000, it represents one of the more lucrative weeks on the calendar.

Players Championship draw and schedule

Three of the last four winners of the Players Championship have failed to even qualify for the 2023 draw, including reigning champion Neil Robertson.

Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins are two other notable absentees, in addition to fellow top 16 members Mark Williams, Barry Hawkins, and Stuart Bingham.

Mark Allen is the competition’s top seed following a 2022/23 campaign in which he has already won three ranking titles.

The Pistol will face 16th seed Joe O’Connor on the opening night with a berth in the quarter-finals on the line.

Man of the moment Robert Milkins, whose Welsh Open success on Sunday saw him also land the BetVictor Series bonus, encounters fellow Englishman Tom Ford.

  • CLICK HERE: Robert Milkins – ‘It’s the biggest week of my life on the table’

Arguably the tie of the first round sees former world champions Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy do battle, although there’s another intriguing affair between attack-minded cueists Jack Lisowski and Luca Brecel.

Masters winner Judd Trump faces Ali Carter – the German Masters champion from a couple of weeks ago – while former world number one Ding Junhui plays Gary Wilson.

In the last 16’s other fixtures, British Open champion Ryan Day meets Shoot Out king Chris Wakelin, and Zhou Yuelong challenges Kyren Wilson.

Round 1 (best of 11) Mark Allen vs Joe O’Connor (Monday, 7pm) Luca Brecel vs Jack Lisowski (Wednesday, (1pm) Ali Carter vs Judd Trump (Tuesday, 7pm) Robert Milkins vs Tom Ford (Tuesday, 7pm) Kyren Wilson vs Zhou Yuelong (Tuesday, 1pm) Ding Junhui vs Gary Wilson (Wednesday, 1pm) Mark Selby vs Shaun Murphy (Tuesday, 1pm) Ryan Day vs Chris Wakelin (Monday, 7pm)

The quarter-finals take place on Wednesday evening, Thursday, and Friday afternoon, the semi-finals are on the evenings of Friday and Saturday, and the final is on Sunday.

How to watch the Players Championship

The tournament will be available to UK and Irish viewers on ITV and for other European supporters on Eurosport and discovery+.

Fans in territories without coverage will be able to see the action on Matchroom Live via a subscription. All the available options are on the WST website .

I would argue that because certain events are not ranked we don’t get the 16 most consistent players of the season. Ronnie O’Sullivan has won two big events this season so surely has to be seen as one of this term’s best performers despite an average campaign in ranking events.

This location in Wolverhampton is too far away from the centre of the city for me to attend despite being based in the West Midlands.

Top seeds for World Championship snooker confirmed as huge names miss out

The 16 players that automatically qualify for the crucible have been confirmed - with luca brecel and ronnie o'sullivan leading the way..

Ryan Smart

The top 16 seeds have now been confirmed for the 2024 World Snooker Championship - with reigning champion Luca Brecel leading the way.

A total of 32 players compete in the tournament at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, with only 16 players qualifying automatically.

The seeding for the World Championship is different to other tournaments, with the World Snooker Tour using a system based on results in specific ranking tournaments over the previous season. The reigning champion is named as the number one seed.

Brecel would have been comfortably outside the top 16 without his World Championship performance, given his challenging season to date, but has begun to find form ahead of the Crucible and will be hoping to defend his crown.

Ronnie O'Sullivan , meanwhile, is the number two seed, while Judd Trump is in third. Mark Allen and Mark Selby make up the top five.

But there are some big names that will miss out on being allocated an automatic spot at the World Championship.

2010 champion Neil Robertson went into last week's World Open in China knowing he would need to win the tournament to get back into the top 16.

However, he lost a thrilling final frame decider to home favourite Ding Junhui - who subsequently needed a police escort out of the arena - in the semi-finals.

Robertson will therefore need to qualify for the Crucible for the first time since 2006.

He will be joined by the likes of 2023 Crucible semi-finalist Si Jiahui, Stephen Maguire, Hossein Vafaei and Jack Lisowski in attempting to make it to Sheffield via the gruelling qualification format.

The Australian, though, will only enter at the final stage of four best-of-19 frame rounds.

Jimmy White is also set to enter the qualifiers, while seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry still holds an invitational tour card though it is unclear whether he will appear.

The order of the top 16 can change depending on the results of the Tour Championship next week.

The full top 16 is as follows:

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Stephen Hendry decides not to play World Snooker Championship qualifying

author image

2023 LLP Solicitors World Seniors Championship - Day 4

Stephen Hendry says he will not be playing in World Snooker Championship qualifying this season, meaning he will end the campaign winless on the professional circuit.

The seven-time world champion returned to the main tour in the 2020/21 season, accepting a two-year tour card, which was given again at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

There were some notable wins in the first two years of the return, beating Jimmy White in qualifying for the 2021 World Championship, then picking up victories over the likes of Michael White and Chris Wakelin the following season.

However, the two most recent campaigns have been fruitless, with no wins from four matches last season and none from five outings in the current campaign.

There will be no more matches this season for the 55-year-old, after he posted a comment on Fergal O’Brien’s Instagram ahead of World Championship qualifying.

‘Play well Fergal, lucky for u I’m not entering 🤣🤣,’ Hendry wrote on social media.

He explained on the WST Snooker Club podcast: ‘I’ve not entered the World qualifying this year.

‘There’s a couple of reason, it starts the day after the Tour Championship finishes. I’ll have been working for TV all week and obviously not had much chance to practice, which I haven’t really done.

Cazoo Masters - Day Eight

‘I’m not going to bother this year. There’s a lot of things to do in between the Tour Championship and World Championship, so I thought I’d give it a miss this year.’

As announced earlier this month by the WPBSA: ‘Any current professional players who do not enter the tournament will be replaced from the 2023 Q School Order of Merit. ’

Hendry’s current two-year invitational tour card will come to an end when this season is over and it is yet to be seen whether he will be offered another one or choose to accept it if he is.

The King of the Crucible has become one of the most prolific voices in the sport, with his hugely successful Cue Tips YouTube channel , WST’s Snooker Club podcast and his commentary and punditry duties for the BBC and ITV.

His focus is certainly more on his media commitments than playing these days, hosting a live edition of Snooker Club at The Crucible on 19 April , the day before the World Championship gets underway at the iconic venue.

Speaking earlier this season on Snooker Club, Hendry admitted that his return to competition may be coming to an end, finding his level of performance at times ’embarrassing’.

‘There has to be a time when I can’t put up with not being able to make a 30 break. It is embarrassing,’ he said in September.

‘My relationship with snooker now is… well if it was love-hate before, it is now love-hate-hate. It has never been ‘a comeback’ to try and win things. It has always been to get a wildcard, play some matches and see what happens.

‘The problem is I don’t practice, and how can you expect to go and do anything if you don’t prepare for it? I am basically on the golf course eight days a week.

‘I am torn between… I mean I lost in the qualifiers recently 4-0 to Fergal O’Brien and I probably played about 0.02 per cent of the way I could play. Fergal didn’t play great, he’s at the end of his career… if I had got to two per cent, I would have beaten him. There is a problem, I couldn’t even get to two per cent.’

He added: ‘I saw a comment on WST Instagram, I lost to a guy called Mohammed Asif. Someone posted “Why is Stephen doing this to himself?” And I thought “Why am I doing it to myself?” It might not last forever, let’s see how it goes.’
