Pompeii is a rare and beautiful archaeological site just south of Naples. In an instant, 13 to 20 feet (4-6 meters) of ash and pumice from the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD buried this town in a uniquely tough form of ash and pumice. It left behind a remarkably preserved glimpse of life in Roman times for us to see today.

Our expert English-speaking tour guide will tell you many interesting facts about Pompeii, as well as make its story come alive with lesser-known knowledge. After weaving you through this ancient Roman city, they will then take you up to the crater of the magnificent Mount Vesuvius.

Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano in mainland Europe, and the most studied in the world. It is also one of the most dangerous volcanos as it has a population of people living close by in the surrounding areas! This angry volcano supposedly ejected ash more than 20 miles into the air, during the fateful eruption of 79 AD. Visiting Mount Vesuvius is an experience of a lifetime.

Great walking tour of Venice with a bonus ride in a gondola

This was a great walking tour of Venice in 2 parts, morning and afternoon. Our guide Marco was excellent. He had the headsets and microphones that are so important when doing a walking tour in a city, so that we could hear him at all times. He took us around parts of the city to see hidden areas, and spent just the right amount of time walking, then stopping to talk about an area without lingering too long. You could tell he was a very experienced tour guide and I appreciated this. The gondola ride was so nice, and there were just 2 of us on the gondola which I was pleasantly surprised that we weren't grouped heavier, so that was very nice. The afternoon in the Doge's Palace was also at a perfect pace of walking, stopping, and talking. Thank you for a perfect tour in Venice.

Will the tour still run if it rains?

Yes. We run our tours rain or shine. If weather conditions are dangerous (high winds/rain, heavy snowfall), the climb to Mt. Vesuvius will be substituted. This is extremely rare.

Is lunch included?

Lunch is NOT included in the price of the tour.

Is a guided tour of Mt. Vesuvius included?

Yes! You will climb Mt. Vesuvius with a professional vulcanologist!

Hike up the Mount Vesuvius

Then its time to head in the direction of Vesuvius, which looms high over the city in the distance. The volcano is still active, which adds a small sense of adventure to those familiar with the story of ancient Pompeii and how it was engulfed by the ash and pumice that rained down on it in 79 AD. Lava flows have scarred the sides of the volcano and are visible on the winding road up to the top.

From the parking area, it is just a 30-minute upward hike to the crater through soft volcanic ash and pumice to admire the most incredible views over the Bay of Naples. You’ll also see the islands of Capri and Ischia in the distance, all from a height of over 4,000 feet. Once you return to the car, your driver will accompany you back to the port in time to board your cruise ship.

• This private Pompeii and Vesuvius tour is available on request from April to mid-November.
• Barring inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, the trail to the crater is open all year round, including Sundays and holidays.
• In rare cases of inclement weather, the crater of Vesuvius may be closed to visitors. If this is the case, a stop in Sorrento or appropriate alternative will be provided.

Good to Know

• Each vehicle can accommodate up to a maximum of 9 people (guide and driver included) so with bookings of more than 7 people, your party will be divided into two or more vehicles.
• Pompeii is an ongoing excavation site. The itinerary might encounter some changes depending on the archaeologists’ daily duties.
• The hike up to the crater of Vesuvius is optional and requires a good level of general fitness to complete. The hike is uphill at a 14 degree angle and 20 minutes long (about 1 mile). The hike is prevalently on soft ground, adequate footwear is recommended. Those who choose may remain at the parking area and enjoy the views.
• Temperatures on the Volcano may be a bit lower than temperatures on the ground, a sweater or light jacket is recommended, especially outside of the summer months.
• This tour involves a fair amount of walking, comfortable shoes are recommended.
• During summer, expect high temperatures. Dress in layers. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat is suggested.
• Due to uneven surfaces, this Pompeii and Vesuvius tour is not suitable for those with walking disabilities or using a wheelchair.

We had the most wonderful day in Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. There were 5 of us, and we had a very comfortable trip in the sprinter van. Tour Description

Relive the harrowing events of august 79 ad.

“ On Mount Vesuvius, broad sheets of fire and leaping flames blazed at several points, their bright glare emphasized by the darkness of night .”

That’s how Pliny the Young beautifully describes the tragic events that took place in between August 24th and 25th AD 79: even the writer’s uncle Pliny the Elder, together with thousands of other people, lost his life during those terrible moments.

The eruption lasted several hours and started pretty slowly in the morning of August 24th, AD 79. Around 9:00 AM the Pompeians started hearing a few small explosions coming from the Mount Vesuvius, which got progressively louder and more destructive over the course of the day and the night: by 8:00 PM of the next day, Pompeii was buried under 3 meters of lava , together with its unfortunate inhabitants.

But what was Pompeii like before the catastrophe? Interestingly enough, the city was already some 900 years old when the volcano destroyed it. Founded by the Osci people in the VIII century BC, Pompeii was probably born out of the fusion of five original villages: the name itself, in fact, very likely comes from the Oscan world “ pumpte ”, which means five. In the 3rd century BC the city was conquered by the Romans, who shaped it into a perfect roman city, complete with efficient roman roads, luxury baths, the forum, a theatre and an amphitheater for gladiatorial shows and so on.

At the time of the eruption Pompeii was a flourishing roman city, thriving on commerce and celebrated for its delicious wine and tasty olive oil. Appreciated also for its mild climate and for the proximity to the sea, Pompeii was also a popular holiday place, particularly appreciated by the families of the roman aristocracy, as witnessed by the amazing rich villas that are still preserved, embellished by magnificent and precious art.

Sealed under 3 meters of lava and pumice stone, Pompeii slept, stuck in the terrible moments of the eruption, for 1600 years: it is only in 1763 that the excavations started and, to the archaeologists’ greatest amazement, the entire city slowly emerged from the ashes, practically intact. And it isn’t quite over yet: as the excavations keep going in other areas of the site, Pompeii still keeps surprising everybody with new amazing discoveries.

Banquet room with preserved frescoes unearthed among Pompeii ruins

‘Black room’ with frescoes inspired by Trojan war described as one of most striking discoveries ever made at site in southern Italy

A banquet room replete with well preserved frescoes depicting characters inspired by the Trojan war has been unearthed among the ruins of Pompeii in what has been described as one of the most striking discoveries ever made at the southern Italy archaeological site.

The 15-metre-long, six-metre-wide room was found in a former private residence in Via di Nola, which was ancient Pompeii’s longest road, during excavations in the Regio IX area of the site.

The “black room”, so-called because of the colour of its walls that were probably intended to mask the soot from burning oil lamps, was a “refined setting for entertaining during convivial moments”, experts said.

Its walls are adorned with artworks featuring mythical Greek characters, including one of Helen of Troy meeting Paris, prince of Troy, for the first time. The fresco includes a dog and a Greek inscription that reads “Alexandros”, the prince’s other name. According to Greek legend, the pair’s elopement triggered the Trojan war in the 12th century BC.

Another fresco depicts the Greek god Apollo trying to woo the priestess Cassandra. In his efforts to seduce her, Apollo had bestowed upon her the power to foresee the future, but when she rejected him he cursed her so that nobody would believe her predictions. As a result, she was unable to thwart the tragic events of a battle she had prophesied. After being raped during the capture of Troy, Cassandra ended up enslaved.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of Pompeii’s archaeological park, said the mythological figures had the explicit function of entertaining guests and providing talking points during feasts.

“The mythological couples provided ideas for conversations about the past, and life, only seemingly of a merely romantic nature,” he said. “In reality, they refer to the relationship between the individual and fate: Cassandra who can see the future but no one believes her, Apollo who sides with the Trojans against the Greek invaders, but being a god, cannot ensure victory, Helen and Paris who, despite their politically incorrect love affair, are the cause of the war, or perhaps merely a pretext.”

He added: “People would meet to dine after sunset; the flickering light of the lamps had the effect of making the images appear to move, especially after a few glasses of good Campanian wine.”

The artworks are “third style”, or ornate style, and dated between 15BC and AD40-50.

“It’s always difficult to judge quality but what we see is a high degree of care for detail, expression and shadows,” said Zuchtriegel. “This is very striking, as is the topic of the works.”

Meanwhile, the room’s sophisticated mosaic floor contains more than a million tiny white tiles.

The room opens on to a courtyard with a long staircase leading up to the property’s first floor, beneath which a huge pile of building materials was found. On the arches of the staircase, someone had drawn in charcoal two pairs of gladiators and what archaeologists said in a statement “appears to be an enormous stylised phallus”.

Excavations in Regio IX, a district of the city that had hosted a cluster of homes and workshops, have yielded plenty of other discoveries since beginning in February last year, including a home containing a cramped bakery where enslaved people were believed to have been imprisoned and exploited to produce bread.

The remains of three victims of the AD79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius were found in one of the bakery’s rooms. A still-life fresco resembling a pizza was also found on a wall in the home’s hallway . In December, 13 Nativity-style statuettes were found in an upright position on what was probably a shelf in the hallway of a home. Archaeologists said the figurines provided evidence of pagan rituals in Pompeii before the city was destroyed by Vesuvius.

“Pompeii is truly a treasure chest that never ceases to surprise us and arouse amazement because, every time we dig, we find something beautiful and significant,” said the Italian culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano.

The Pompeii ruins were discovered in the 16th century, with the first excavations beginning in 1748. Pompeii is the second most-visited archaeological site in the world.
