Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh/Glasgow - Mallaig - Benbecula

Bidding farewell to Edinburgh and Glasgow our journey takes us into the scenic beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park . After a break for refreshments, we travel over the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor to reach Glen Coe, famous for its mountain scenery and being the site of the infamous massacre of the MacDonald clan in 1692.

A drive along the banks of Loch Linnhe brings us to Fort William and Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain. The next part of our journey will take us along the “ Road to the Isles ”, one of Scotland’s most scenic routes where we will pass the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous in the Harry Potter movies.

At Mallaig, we board the ferry for our crossing to Lochboisdale on the island of South Uist. As we make our way, lookout for beautiful views of the Cuillin Hills on Skye and the small isles of Rum and Canna. Dinner will be served en route, so on arrival, we head directly to our hotel on Benbecula.

Please note: some departures may operate in reverse.

Overnight: Dark Island Hotel, Benbecula (or similar) (2 nights)

Day 2 - Exploring Eriskay and Vatersay

After our first Hebridean breakfast, it’s time to board our coach and make our way through South Uist and across the causeway to reach the little island of Eriskay. Meaning “Eric’s Island” in Norse, this was where  Bonnie Prince Charlie  landed on 23 July 1745 to start his ultimately failed attempt to capture the British Crown for the Stuart Dynasty. We’ll see the beach where this critical event in Scottish history occurred.

As we continue our drive, look out for an Eriskay Pony. They are unique to the island and only recently saved from extinction. We board the ferry bound for Barra, where, as we arrive in Castlebay, there are beautiful views of Kisimul Castle to enjoy.

We’ll visit the castle, once a stronghold of the Clan MacNeil. It dates from the 11th Century and is the sole example of a medieval castle in the Western Isles. During our tour, we’ll see the great hall, kitchen, dungeon and the impressive 60-foot tower.

Back on Barra, we’ll see Cockleshell Beach, the only airfield where the tides dictate the flight times.

Look out for “Suidheachan”, the former home of the author  Sir Compton MacKenzie , who wrote “Whisky Galore”, a tale that was based on an actual event that took place here in 1941. The book spawned two movies. The classic version dates from 1949 and was filmed mainly on the neighbouring island of Vatersay, our next destination.

We’ll return to Eriskay by ferry and return to our hotel, where dinner awaits.

Day 3 - Benbecula - Isle of Harris - Stornoway

It’s time to bid farewell to Benbecula today as we travel northwards using the causeway to reach North Uist. The landscape is scattered with little lochans, while on the coast, there are beautiful sandy beaches to explore. At Berneray, we catch the ferry for the short crossing to the Isle of Harris.

Our landfall is in Leverburgh, a little village renamed by Lord Leverhulme , who planned to turn the village into a major fishing port. His dream died with him in 1925, and the project was abandoned.

We’ll stop in Rodel to visit  St Clement’s Church , which dominates the village. Built for the Clan MacLeod, it dates from the 15th Century and was dedicated to Pope Clement I. The church tombs are amongst the most spectacular in Scotland.

We take the coastal route to see the stunning beaches at Horgabost, Borve and Scarasta. There are also fantastic views over to the little island of Taransay , which found unlikely fame in the BBC programme “Castaway”.

We’ll make a stop so you can enjoy some refreshments in Tarbert, the primary community on the Island of Harris. From here, we’ll travel through the mountainous scenery of North Harris and make our way into Lewis. Our home for the next three nights will be in Stornoway.

Overnight: Caberfeidh Hotel, Stornoway (or similar) (3 nights)

Day 4 - Excursion to Callanish Standing Stones and Norse Mill

After breakfast, we leave Stornoway behind and make our way to the wild west coast of Lewis to visit the Standing Stones of Callanish . Thought to be over 5,000 years old, there are some 50 stones, including 19 monoliths marking out a megalithic avenue and a circle of 13 stones, with a cairn in the middle. The purpose of the stones is lost in the mists of time. Some experts claim it was a place of ritual activity. Others suggest it was some form of astronomical observatory.

Later, we move on to visit the Black Houses at Gearrannan. These thatched houses were once a common sight throughout the Highlands and Islands until relatively recently. Housing livestock as well as people, they were built with double walls to give extra protection from the elements. Many had no chimney, so the smoke just escaped through the turf roof.

Our last visit today is to Shawbost, where we’ll visit the Norse Mill and Kiln , a well-preserved grain mill of a style used by the Vikings, who settled in Lewis around the 12th Century. This example was used by the islanders up until the 1930s. Enjoy the lovely ocean views as we explore these picturesque thatched buildings.

Day 5 - Butt of Lewis Excursion

This morning is spent in Stornoway. This bustling port is the island’s main town and developed from a Viking settlement around a sheltered bay.

Today, we visit Lews Castle , built as a country house that was gifted to the people of Stornoway in 1923. Today it’s a museum that contains six of the fascinating Lewis Chessmen , a collection of 12th Century chess pieces. You can also take a virtual journey through the islands in a series of wrap-around video presentations.

On the outskirts of Stornoway sits Eaglais-na h-Aoidhe , also known as St Columba’s Ui Church. This medieval building is one of the most significant archaeological sites on Lewis. It’s thought the main church dates from the 13th Century or even earlier. It became the burial site for the Macleod Chiefs of Lewis. During your visit look out for the two central carved stones, they are amongst the best examples to be found in Scotland.

Later, we travel to the northerly tip of the island, home to generations of hardy seafarers. We’ll visit the Port of Ness before moving on to the  Butt of Lewis , where the Atlantic waves crash into the cliffs, guarded by a unique lighthouse designed by the prolific lighthouse engineer David Stevenson in 1862.

Day 6 - Stornoway - Inverness – Edinburgh/Glasgow

We have an early start this morning as we head to the ferry terminal for our sailing back to the mainland. Crossing The Minch will take around 2 hours and 30 minutes, and breakfast will be served on board.

The sheltered waters of Loch Broom will guide us towards the picturesque town of Ullapool , where we disembark. Back on our coach, we’ll travel through the North West Highlands to reach Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands.

Our journey south will continue into the picturesque Cairngorms National Park, then through the Grampian Mountains to reach Highland Perthshire.

After a break, we’ll continue through the Kingdom of Fife, then across the Forth Estuary to reach Edinburgh, and then to Glasgow.

Customer Reviews Overall Rating:

The scenery was stunning. The hotels were nice. The driver, Ian, was first rate. I have never seen a more well cared for and clean coach. And he'd done this trip many times, so was able to point out places of interest and share local stories. Definitely a trip worth taking!

A very full itinerary made the most of our time in the Outer Hebrides, maximising the number of islands visited. Some long days but literally covered a lot of ground. Very interesting history, archaeology and geography with stunning scenery too.

A tour to remember forever - 10 days to enjoy the archaeological wonders and prehistoric history of the northern Orkney Isles , coupled with an escape to the western Isles of Lewis and breathtaking Harris .

Tour highlights include the magnificence of Orkney , with her treasure trove of ancient delights, the incredibly haunting and remote area of Sutherland where tragedy and beauty go hand in hand. Ullapool , nestling on the shores of Loch Broom, is where we travel from to Lewis , and absorb ourselves in Gaelic culture, and enjoy the truly inspirational surroundings of Harris with her mountains and glorious white beaches before crossing the sea again to the drama that is the island of Skye. DAY 1: STIRLING - CALLANDER - GLENCOE - INVERNESS Depart Edinburgh at 09.00 heading west towards Stirling , passing Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. You also pass Doune Castle (set of Monty Python's "Holy Grail") before stopping in the small town of Callander for a refreshment stop. You now cross over the fault line into the magnificent Highlands taking in the splendour of Loch Luibnaig, Loch Earn, Glen Ogle and Glen Dochart, as you travel north over the wild and remote Rannoch Moor into Glencoe . The stunning views and spectacular landscapes of our own super (extinct) volcano and scene of the infamous massacre of the Clan Macdonald in 1692, where many of the Clan Macdonald were slaughtered. You stop in this imposing mountain Glen so you can enjoy the spectacular views. You continue north up the Great Glen to the mysterious beauty of Loch Ness, travelling the whole 23 miles of the famous Loch - plenty of time to try and spot "Nessie!" You arrive at your destination of Inverness at approx 18.30 where you will be dropped off at your booked accommodation. The evening is free for you to explore the 'Capital of the Highlands'. DAY 2: BLACK ISLE - JOHN O'GROATS - ORKNEY It's an early start, leaving behind the 'Capital of the Highlands', crossing over the Black Isle, and continuing past Dunrobin Castle . From here, you drive along the northeast Highland coastline, travelling into some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery.

Onwards through Scotland's most northerly mainland village, John O'Groats , and then to Gills Bay, where you board the ferry, and cross the Pentland Firth into the Orkney Archipelago. It's a short drive to the famous Italian Chapel where you stop for a visit before continuing to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall , Capital of Orkney. Here you can visit Kirkwall's magnificent Viking Cathedral and enjoy its historic winding streets in the evening.

DAY 3: A DAY TO EXPLORE THE ISLAND OF ORKNEY Your chance to explore this fantastic, ancient island; a land of contrasts where fertile green pastures are fringed by shores of golden sands washed by waters of the North Sea and Atlantic ocean. You will visit the 5000 year old village of Skara Brae (older than the Pyramids of Egypt!), the mystical prehistoric stone circle at Brodgar and the Druidic standing stones of Stenness . You stop in Stromness - one of Scotland's most picturesque seaboard villages and then travel onto Maeshowe , where in the 12th century the Vikings left one of the largest collections of Norse runic inscriptions. Then its back to Kirkwall for your 2nd night after what is sure to be a memorable day. DAY 4: PENTLAND FIRTH - ARDVRECK CASTLE - ULLAPOOL A relaxed start to the day, as you leave Orkney and sail the Viking waters back to the mainland. From here you travel the old road right across the very top of Scotland, driving past the stunning Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains following the rocky cliffs and stunning golden sand beaches of our northern coastline. You then visit the far northwest highlands and the grandeur, expanse and wilderness of the mountains of Assynt before stopping to view the 15th century ruins of Ardvreck Castle . From here you travel to Ullapool , situated at the mouth of Loch Broom, a beautiful whitewashed fishing village where you spent your last night's stay on tour. You will say goodbye to this group here, and will be collected by your new guide and group on the morning of day 6. DAY 5: ULLAPOOL A free day in Ullapool to do as you please before joining up with your new crew the next day. There are many possibilities available in this lovely town, Options for your day include enjoying a day just to relax and absorb the highland tranquil pace of life whilst browsing the small craft boutiques nestling through the streets of the town. Or why not take the local boat, the ‘Summer Queen’ from the pier for an idyllic ‘summer Isles’ cruise . Alternatively you could head up Claypool hill for an easy two hour walk offering wonderful views over Loch Broom reaching a maximum height of 900ft. Or for the even more adventurous add to this walk by completing a three hour circuit returning to the town via Rhiddoroch estate. (Full details of all local walks can be found at the local tourist information centre). There is also a local swimming pool, and a small museum giving an informative narrative about the natural and social history of the area. DAY 6: ULLAPOOL - LOCH BROOM - STORNOWAY Catch the morning ferry from Ullapool for the 2 hour sail along Loch Broom , past the Summer Isles then out across the Minch to Stornoway – the main town on Lewis and capital of the Outer Hebrides. Look out for dolphins, whales and seabirds during the crossing. In the afternoon explore the North West coast from Arnol with its historic old "blackhouse", through traditional crofting townships to Port of Ness and the very north tip of the island – the Butt of Lewis. From the lighthouse here there is nothing between you and the Americas! Overnight in Stornoway. DAY 7: EXPLORE ISLE OF LEWIS You first head to Arnol Blackhouse . Here, you can experience what traditional farming life was like in these remote reaches without getting your hands too dirty. A little down the road, you visit the stone fort of Dun Carloway . This structure was built before 100AD and has experienced more battles than you've had hot dinners. It's a wonderful location to ponder over the vast swathes of history that have come before you.

You then travel through a landscape littered with crofting villages to one of the most famous sights of the island, the Calanais Stone Circle . This prehistoric site still mystifies archaeologists today. The rest of your afternoon is spent in the beautiful beaches and mountains of the western side of Lewis. You head back to Stornoway in the late afternoon.

DAY 8: STORNOWAY - ISLE OF HARRIS - PORTREE Travelling south today from the wild moorlands of Lewis to the more mountainous Harris – almost but not quite an island on its own. Famous for the locally produced cloth, Harris Tweed , it is also home to the highest mountains in the Outer Hebrides and the stunning white sands of Luskentyre . After a morning of exploring South Harris you will stop for lunch in the small port of Tarbet from where you will catch the late afternoon ferry to Skye. Continue on to your overnight stay in the picturesque Portree. DAY 9: A DAY TRAVELLING AROUND SKYE Back on the Isle of Skye and today your driver-guide makes the most out of your time on this marvel-studded landscape. You may travel to the Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk, venture to Kilt Rock and see a gigantic waterfall, or take a boat trip to the lesser-known Loch Coruisk. After you've enjoyed the sights of Skye, you have your final evening in Portree. There are plenty of fabulous seafood restaurants to celebrate a fine day of exploring. DAY 10: EILEAN DONAN - FORT WILLIAM - EDINBURGH

Once you've crossed the Skye Bridge, you get a chance to see Eilean Donan Castle . This classic combination of a sturdy-stone fortification perched upon a loch is about as Scottish a view as you can get. Just ensure you've got some room left on your camera to take photos.

You then travel under Britain's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis . The peak of this mountain is likely to be shrouded high in the clouds. Your driver-guide may become a little emotional as you move through the valley of Glencoe . This marvellously mountainous area was the site of one of the most tragic massacres in Scottish history. The story is as unforgettable as the landscape. The hilly views become flatter as you enter the Lowlands and travel to Edinburgh. You arrive in the early evening. For departure details refer to the "Prices, Dates, and What's Included" Section...

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
