9 Sustainable Luggage Brands To Travel The World (2024)

author icon

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here .

Travel season is upon us! And by that, we mean every season can be travel season if you’ve got the right luggage. If you’re looking to upgrade your travel gear (or gift an upgrade to a loved one!) consider choosing sustainable luggage from these eco-friendly, fair trade collections from the best luggage brands we could find.

Coming in an array of styles, colors, personalizations, and sizes, these sustainable suitcases are made by conscious brands, many of which are committed to ethical practices and environmental conservation efforts. Most importantly, these eco-friendly luggage lines are built to last; this means less waste and a bag you can travel with for years to come.

For that “one personal item” on planes and trains, see our guides to sustainable backpacks and eco-friendly purses and handbags for stowing your travel essentials!

Best Overall | Most Affordable | Best Weekender

Best For | Carry-on luggage, packing cubes Price Range | $$–$$$

Paravel is reimagining travel, and not just with its collection of chic suitcases. This NY-based brand has a forward-thinking sustainability model; to date, the company has recycled 5 million plastic water bottles (and counting!) into what’s called negative nylon. This material is used for Paravel’s packing cubes, totes, backpacks, and the interior lining of the Aviator suitcase. The luggage shells are made with recycled polycarbon exterior, an aircraft-grade recycled aluminum handle, vegan leather details, and recycled zippers.

All of this plus the timeless designs, beautiful color schemes, and Paravel’s five-year warranty? We know precisely what suitcase we’re rolling into our next adventure. Weekenders starting at $285 make this the kind of investment you won’t regret. Read our Paravel review for an in-depth look.

Best For | Hard-shell cases Price Range | $$

For a classic hard-shell suitcase that will hold up to the wear and tear of years of work trips and family vacations, we love Quince . Choose from five beautiful but practical hues including dark green or a clear, bright blue in case you want to easily find your piece in a sea of black (although black is classic for a reason, and they have that too!). With Japanese-crafted Hinomoto 360-degree wheels, a removable laundry bag, and a TSA-approved lock, these two pieces also nest easily for storage. Crafted ethically with BCSI-certified production and at a combined price of just over $300, this could be the last travel set you need for a long, long time.

Best For | Artisan-made totes, weekenders, and carry ons Price Range | $–$$$

For a beautifully handmade bag, you can’t go wrong with Nisolo . The certified B Corp works hard to create ethical and sustainable leather goods in partnership with Peruvian artisans. Each climate-neutral purchase comes with a transparent “Sustainability Facts” label that holds the brand accountable for materials, ethical working conditions, and their environmental impact. We love their commitment to planet and people, and their products are the highest quality, crafted with skill and care. Choose from their shoppers, backpacks, weekenders, and more, all handcrafted from responsibly sourced leather and canvas in a gorgeous array of rich whiskey-browns and earthy neutrals. We love the waxed canvas messenger bag, perfect for carrying on or taking to the office, starting at $180!

4. Patagonia

Best For | Heavy duty wheeled duffels Price Range | $$–$$$

Known for its expansive line of outdoor clothing and accessories as well as its sustainability efforts, it comes as no surprise that Patagonia’s collection of bags and gear includes a truly heavy duty wheeled duffel that could withstand a lifetime’s worth of trips around the world. Sold in 40L, 70L, and 100L sizes and starting at just $159, this weather-resistant, waxed bag is designed to haul your gear on sturdy wheels and with a telescoping handle. Made from 100 percent recycled body fabric, lining, and webbing, this duffel is perfect for long-term trips and outdoor travel.

The brand is so committed to sustainability and reducing waste that they not only back every product with an ironclad guarantee that it will last, but they also offer repairs and include DIY repair & care instructions on their site. We are also big fans of their secondhand shop Worn Wear, for trade-ins, buying used, or recycling their items to reduce consumption and extend product life.

5. Lo & Sons

Best For | Weekenders, totes, & backpacks Price Range | $$–$$$

Imagine a bag that’s as stylish and eco-friendly as it is functional: Say hello to Lo & Sons ’ Catalina Deluxe tote, starting at $185. Made with organic canvas or recycled polyester, this sustainable luggage is ideal for anyone and everyone you know! With a roomy shoe compartment, a padded messenger strap, suitcase handle, and plenty of pockets, it’s spacious and durable. No wonder it’s one of the brand’s best-selling bags.

When Helen Lo saw a need for better backpacks and luggage, she worked with her two sons to make it possible. Today, this small Asian American, family-owned business uses organic and recycled materials whenever possible, strives to be fully sustainable, and donates five percent of proceeds to community action organizations and nonprofits local to their NY base.

Best For | Customizable luggage Price Range | $$–$$$$

From former TUMI employees comes Roam , one of the world’s most customizable luggage brands. From monograms to selecting the color of your bag’s stitching, this collection is fun, unique, and created to reflect each traveler’s personality. (Or you can choose from its existing gallery!) Even the totes are customizable (and starting at just $95!).

Roam is also passionate about local business and job creation in the USA. Every one of these suitcases is designed, made to order, and handcrafted at a workshop in Georgia. Each bag comes with a lifetime guarantee to cover non-cosmetic damage.

Best For | Functional, timeless matching sets Price Range | $$$

If you are a frequent flyer looking for the perfect timeless luggage set that is equally as functional as it is stylish, look no further than Monos . Named after the Japanese concept of “mono no aware,” or the appreciation of beauty in fleeting moments, the brand is committed to creating travel products that will help you do just that. Their mindfully designed luggage line offers TSA-approved carry-ons to check-in sized premium travel cases that all nest neatly together between trips.

We love the attention to functionality in their designs, like the sleek front compartment on the Carry-On Pro Plus for easy access to laptops, books, and more. Mix and match starting with their versatile (and beautiful) backpacks that start at $200. Build a set in matching hues for each person in your family over the next several gift-giving occasions to ensure a lifetime of sleek, stylish, and functional journeys to wherever life takes them!

8. Solgaard

Best For | Built-in Shelving Price Range | $$–$$$

Overpackers rejoice! Solgaard is making it easier than ever to pack everything you want with their innovative trunks, which are both a suitcase and a closet combined! Coming in a medium or large carry-on size or a sleek, hard-shell check-in size, these unbreakable suitcases have removable built-in shelves (!!), making unpacking easier than ever. With a lifetime warranty and the knowledge that these babies help to recycle up to 6 lbs of ocean-bound plastic from coastal communities, what’s not to love? Their circular backpacks, starting at $165, are also the perfect personal item. Made from post-consumer recycled plastic, these bags can also be recycled when you’re finished with them!

The case is open to reveal the extended shelves inside.

Best For | Luggage to last Price Range | $$–$$$$

A bag by Orvis is a bag inspired by nature, and we’re all about investing in quality luggage with the Battenkill Expandable Roller. Perfect for extended trips and touting a lifetime warranty, the Battenkill is one we know will be passed down through generations. We also love their adventure tote, which is built with the same attention to detail for a lifetime of use, starting at just under $100.

Orvis dates back to 1856 when the company was founded in the hills of Vermont. Dedicated to protecting the wild, these products will survive and outlast all your adventures. They even offer a repair program. Orvis gives five percent of pre-tax profits to environmental protection efforts and works with numerous conservation partners and initiatives .

What to Look Out for When Buying Sustainable Luggage

Check the size and capacity.

The first thing to consider while buying sustainable luggage is its size and the capacity it can hold.

You must look for TSA-approved carry-on or check-in sizes if you plan to travel by flight.

It is also a great idea to buy expandable luggage that can carry more when weight restrictions are not applicable.

Look for versatile options

The purpose of sustainable luggage has to be to reduce the need for different bags.

You can look for luggage that serves multiple purposes – for example, duffel bags that can be carried as backpacks are a great option.

Similarly, suitcases with-in built pockets and internal storage eliminates the need to carry an extra bag.

Check the materials

It is important to see what goes into the making of sustainable luggage.

You should look not just at the outer shell, but also see if maximum elements are made from eco-materials.

For example, look for luggage that has zippers, wheels, handles, and inner lining made from sustainable materials.

Everyone needs a reliable, sustainable backpack for something. Whether you started commuting to work, taking weekend trips or hiking , or headed to school, a backpack is useful to hold all your essentials.  But these days, backpacks have also become more of an everyday fashion staple, with many women ditching purses for this more practical alternative .

So here’s what to look for in a high-quality, sustainable backpack:

Sustainably sourced, natural and/or recycled materials: Many of the backpacks below are made from recycled materials, natural materials like organic cotton canvas, locally sourced and vegetable-tanned leather, and banana fiber (!). These kinds of materials can be renewable, biodegradable, non-toxic, and much less taxing on the planet. More often than not, they’re higher quality and more durable, too.

Fair wages and transparency: Because, well, people should be paid fairly for the work they do —period. Look for brands that are committed to paying their makers living wages for their work while also providing other benefits like healthcare and education.

Quality and durability: A backpack is first and foremost functional. So whether you’re taking it on a camping trip or to work every day, there’s a good chance you’re going to be slinging it around, getting it wet, and generally subjecting it to a good amount of wear and tear. The last thing you want is to end up on a hike with a broken strap or in an airport with a bag with a busted zipper. Durability is always a must for sustainable fashion, but especially so for backpacks.

Repair, take back, guarantees: Buying a backpack is mostly an investment, so extending its usage is a must. Check out brands that offer lifetime warranties, take back and repair programs. A few of the brands below offer these services.

Durable water repellent/PFAS-Free: Backpacks and other performance gear are typically treated with synthetic chemicals, known as polyfluoroalkyl chemicals ( PFAS ), to make it impervious to water. But the problem is, these chemicals don’t ever break down or go away. Once washed, they can make their way into our water systems, contaminating wildlife and even our bodies. PFAS have been linked to various human risks, including cancer, miscarriage, infertility, hormonal disruption, and obesity . We’ve listed below a couple of brands that are finished with PFC-free water-repellent coatings.

Lastly, note that few of these companies are doing absolutely everything 100% ethically and sustainably — but they’re honest about that and are committed to improving. If we ever find out that a brand isn’t operating responsibly or honestly, or that they’ve fallen behind their peers, they are removed!

(PS: If you’re also in need of other tech accessories, like laptop sleeves and phone cases, check out this post. And for luggage, click here. )

Here are our favorite brands for sustainable, ethically-made and eco-friendly backpacks:

reycel travel

Not only are Solgaard’s backpacks made completely from recycled ocean plastic   — a step up from straight recycled bottles — they are also super functional for travel and/or everyday use. These backpacks have some awesome features like a solar-powered charger for your phone, an anti-theft lock, secret compartments for your passport or debit cards, and a drop-proof laptop sleeve. Plus, for every item purchased, Solgaard pulls five pounds of plastic from the ocean in partnership with The Plastic Bank .

reycel travel

United By Blue

Great for your commute or day hike, United By Blue’s backpacks are made out of sustainable materials like organic cotton, recycled polyester, and vegetable-tanned leather. Plus, every product purchased removes one pound of trash from our oceans and waterways.

Much of the materials used are recycled, and as always, Patagonia is committed to ethical and transparent production, so you can find out more about where your pack was made right on the product page.

Day Owl creates backpacks out of recycled materials, such as plastic bottles. They come in a beautiful selection of colors and two sizes for you to choose from. Once you’ve worn it out, you can send your backpack back to Day Owl, and it will give you a deal on a replacement, making sure the returned backpack becomes input materials for new bags. In addition to selling brand-new backpacks, Day Owl also sometimes sells secondhand options. You can join the brand’s waitlist to be notified when it launches its next secondhand drop.

Fjallraven is committed to sustainability throughout the entire manufacturing process, from design to production. It uses natural and recycled materials and says no to harmful chemicals while prioritizing longevity, recyclability, function, and simplicity. QWSTION’s beautiful, sleek packs are great for urban use, work, and travel and come in a variety of colors and sizes based on what you need. They are made using organically grown fibers like high-density cotton canvas and Bananatex (made from banana fibers), then finished with PFC-free water-repellent coatings. Check out Alden’s experience visiting QWSTION in Switzerland here.

Our Review: Our tester has tried out two QWSTION backpacks: the Bananatex roll-top and the Medium Bucket . The roll-top’s combo of the durable canvas-like Bananatex material and the leather finishes has physically held up well for airplane and car travel. The white material has gotten some permanent stains and creases, so the backpack is probably more suited for casual travel rather than business or high-end trips. But her laptop has been well-protected in its pocket, and between the roll-top and side zipper access, this backpack is handy and rugged. The Medium Bucket has become her go-to day hike backpack, with mild PFAS-free water repellency imparted through a wax coating and natural material, it feels more in tune with nature to bring this along. It will fit a 1.5-liter water bladder, too, and the little front pocket makes it easy to store things like hand sanitizer.

reycel travel

Incorporating a zero-waste philosophy into its entire company, grünBAG only uses durable materials that last and would otherwise go to waste (like old seatbelts, lifeboats, and advertising banners, for example). Most of its bags are made to order right at its headquarters in Switzerland. You can read Alden’s full review of a backpack she designed herself here , and you can even buy her design as well here !

Our Review: Our tester carried her Grunbag around with her for about a year of travel. It was water-resistant and sleek, with a Scandinavian-meets-street- style aesthetic, and physically it held up well to heavy use. The only drawback was that the straps started to stain her shirts with black dye after a few months, so she had to ditch the bag.

What is green travel and how can you travel sustainably?

As travel continues to grow, our awareness of what green travel is and how to travel in an environmentally friendly way also needs to increase. We need to change the way we travel NOW!

reycel travel

Kate Maskedtravelsx

Jul 27, 2023

green-travel

As technology and infrastructure improve, the world seems to be getting smaller. The ability to travel the world is becoming accessible to more and more people as the cost of getting to another country is getting cheaper.

It’s no wonder that the travel industry is the second-fastest growing industry in the world . Looking at internet searches will give you a good idea of how much travel is growing. During the final quarter of 2022, 35% of all searches were for travel in 2023 . That’s a 55% increase from 2021 !

And I can only see it continuing to grow , as long as another pandemic doesn’t come our way!

Traveling is great, and the more people get to see different parts of the world, hopefully, the more tolerant and educated we become . But there are downsides to more travel, one of them being the impact that it has on the environment.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, 8-10% of global CO2 emissions are caused by the travel and tourism sector, with the majority of these emissions being created by the travel to the destination. And sadly, these numbers will only get bigger as more people begin to travel  unless we consciously do something about it .

That’s where green travel comes in.

What is green travel?

Green travel has many different names — sustainable travel, ecotourism, conscious travel — but all of them essentially mean the same thing or at least follow the same narrative.

Green travel focuses on minimizing the impact on the local environment and communities. It’s about choosing ways to travel that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Whether it’s reducing or offsetting your carbon emissions, reducing waste, staying in eco-friendly accommodations, or shopping locally and supporting communities.

There are plenty of ways to travel in a green way, and that’s what we’re going to be exploring in this article.

Watch out for greenwashing

This needs to be covered pretty early on as you don’t want to try your best to travel sustainably and then realize that you’ve actually been greenwashed.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is when a company tries to appear to be environmentally friendly and claims that its practices are sustainable, when in fact this isn’t true. They may try to emphasize sustainable aspects of their company to overshadow their bad practices that are having a devastating effect on the environment.

Demand for environmentally friendly products and operations is growing as more people want to do their part in looking after our planet. A lot of companies have seen this as an opportunity to boost their profits and attract new customers by advertising that they’re operating in an environmentally friendly way.

Examples of greenwashing

A quick Google search will reveal plenty of examples of greenwashing from brands that we interact with on a daily basis. Here are two well-known companies that thought they’d give greenwashing a go:

In 2020, Ryanair announced that they were Europe’s ‘lowest emissions airline’. I’m not sure how they reached this conclusion, but the Advertising Standards Authority certainly didn’t agree with this claim and quickly banned all of the ads promoting this.

McDonald’s is guilty too. In 2019, they introduced paper straws. Round of applause for Mcdonald's, right? No. Although they were trying to address the problem of plastic pollution, they just shifted the problem instead. The paper straws weren’t recyclable, and more trees were having to be cut down to make them!

How to spot greenwashing?

In an ideal world, we shouldn’t have to keep an eye out for greenwashing. Companies would be honest and actually try to look after our planet. Unfortunately, that’s not the world that we live in.

And greenwashing isn’t always easy to see. You often have to go out of your way to do your own research to verify the company's claims. You’ll have to look at third-party research and reports, and check the fine print of the company.

All we can do is try our best, and hopefully, the huge corporations start to adopt this attitude too.

How to travel sustainably: eco-friendly vacations

At times, trying to save our planet can feel hopeless. We often hear people saying "But I’m only one person. My actions aren’t going to make a difference". If everyone adopts this way of thinking then of course nothing is going to change!

If everyone starts to act more sustainably, especially when it comes to travel, then as a collective it will make a difference.

And green travel is easier than you think . There are plenty of ways and changes that you can make to your travels that can make them more sustainable:

Slow travel

Traveling slowly has so many benefits , but is often tossed to the side as travelers want to tick off as many places as possible. Whilst this is tempting, you end up only touching the surface of that country, missing out on truly learning about the culture and people of that place.

When I travel slowly, my connections with places and people are so much deeper and more memorable. Try it, and I’m sure you’ll prefer it to being in a new place every few days .

Taking your time will also save you money . You can often negotiate better deals on accommodation if you’re staying for longer. You’re not constantly splashing the cash on transportation and you’ll probably cook more rather than eat out.

It’s also better for the environment . Instead of hopping on a flight every two weeks, you’ll be in the same place for longer.

Stay close to home

This is potentially one of the harder changes to make as the urge to see the world is so strong within many of us.

But staying close to home isn’t as bad as it sounds. Every country has something spectacular to offer , we just often overlook them if they’re in our own country. New and foreign things always seem more exciting, but take some time to look at things to do in your own country.

As I mentioned before, most of the carbon emissions from travel come from getting to the destination itself . By staying in your own country you’re removing this negative impact on the environment. If you live in Europe, maybe you can visit some of your neighboring countries and get there by train.

As well as being a more sustainable way to travel, it can save you money too. Your transportation costs will be significantly lower. No visas to think about either.

Choose sustainable destinations

reycel travel

Some countries are doing more than others to make themselves a sustainable destination to visit.

For example, Bhutan is one of the best ecotourism destinations in the world . Since 1991, Bhutan has been charging visitors a daily Sustainable Development Fee. The money is used on projects such as offsetting Bhutan’s carbon footprint from tourism, supporting community education, organic farming, and upskilling workers in the tourism industry.

The tourism fee is pretty expensive, at $200/day, but there’s a price to pay if we want to protect our planet.

A more affordable ecotourism destination is Slovenia which has made it easier for you to choose sustainable options. If an accommodation or tourism service has a Slovenia Green Label, you know that you’re helping to preserve local traditions and protect the environment.

It’s important to research a destination beforehand to see what they're doing to be more sustainable and protect their environment.

Continue reading about ecotourism and the top 10 ecotourism destinations .

Choose a place that will benefit from your visit

reycel travel

Some countries really don’t need any more visitors. A growing number of countries are now struggling with overtourism — when too many people visit the same destination, often leaving a negative impact on the environment and local communities.

You can probably already name a few places off the top of your head after seeing pictures of huge crowds fighting to witness the same tourist attraction. Some well-known examples include Rome, Bali, Barcelona, and the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

Sure, there’s a reason why everyone wants to visit these places. They’re incredible and popular for a reason. But there are plenty of other lesser-known spots that you could visit instead.

Want to learn more about overtourism? Here’s what it is and how you can avoid it .

Think about what you pack

Green travel starts before you even pack your bags to leave . What you bring with you in your backpack will have an impact on the place that you’re visiting.

The first sustainable swap that everyone should be making is to reef-safe suncream . These suncreams don't contain chemicals that harm the coral and reef when you go swimming in the sea. Hawaiian tropics has a great reef-safe suncream that I highly recommend.

Another easy action is to travel with a reusable water bottle . In some countries you'll be able to drink tap water and can directly fill up your water bottle, avoiding having to buy bottles of water.

Bring a tote bag to take with you whenever you go shopping so that you don’t have to take a plastic bag. Or if you don’t have another bag, get a plastic bag one time and keep on reusing it.

Our coastlines are being ruined by plastic, so try to avoid using and buying it wherever you can.

This minimalist packing list should help you to pack sustainably the next time you travel.

Choose green accommodation

According to research carried out by Booking.com, 78% of travellers say they intend to stay in a more sustainable property in the coming ye a r – yet 29% don’t know how to find sustainable travel options.

With some accommodations, it’s clear to see that they’re operating in an eco-friendly way. They may have solar panels, reuse their water, employ local people and buy from the local community. With others, it may not be as obvious, or it could just be greenwashing.

Spend some time looking at the accommodation's website, and you could even message them if you have any questions about their sustainable practices.

Booking.com have also made it easier to find sustainable accommodation by introducing its ‘Travel Sustainable’ badge. It’s an independently validated recognition program that now appears as a small icon on sustainable places to stay. They do all the work for you so it’s easier to make green decisions.

Booking is offering 2% of Cashback to backpackers who create a profile on Worldpackers . Subscribing to Worldpackers is free, and you only need to subscribe to a plan when you decide to have your first experience through the platform. If you choose the Pack Plan, you will guarantee 4% of Cashback on Booking.com , in addition to other advantages.

*The Cashback benefit is limited to $200 per booking, and you must log in to your Booking.com account to gain access to Cashback.

Choose sustainable modes of transportation

reycel travel

This is often the first swap that people make to travel more sustainably. Instead of taking flights, which produce a lot of CO2, try to take public transport.

Sometimes taking a flight doesn’t even work out that much quicker, and it’s normally a lot more expensive. By the time you account for the time it takes to get to the airport and the wait time, it can sometimes take just as long as taking a bus or a train.

You can also decide to visit countries that are in the same area to avoid taking flights. For example, you could travel all the way from the USA to Argentina without having to take a flight. There are buses, boats and trains that can take you across the borders. Same with Europe and Southeast Asia.

Again, this is also a much cheaper way to travel than flying to the other side of the world to visit your next country.

Eat, stay, and shop locally

Make the conscious decision to stay in local homestays, eat at local restaurants and buy from shops that are run by people in the community.

Sometimes it might be easier to eat at a chain restaurant or stay at a well-known hotel, but this often means that the local economy isn’t benefiting from your money as much. Instead, it’s making rich people richer.

It’s better for the local economy, but it is also likely to be better for you. If you’re visiting a foreign country, it’s likely that you want to immerse yourself in the local culture as much as possible. Staying, eating, and buying locally is often the best way to do this. Plus, the local restaurants are more often than not the best places to eat!

If you’re a solo traveler, check out these 12 tips for responsible travel .

Give back by volunteering

Green travel isn’t just about reducing things, it can also be about giving back and leaving a positive impact on the communities that you’re visiting.

One way to do this is by volunteering . You can contribute your skills and donate your time to people that will benefit from it.

Volunteering also allows you to spend more time in a place, immersing yourself and really getting to know the culture. There are so many benefits of this, one of them being that you become a better-educated individual who will also be able to teach others about different cultures and ways of living.

Here’s how you can be an environmental volunteer .

How to find volunteering opportunities?

reycel travel

Worldpackers is a fantastic place to find volunteering opportunities that have a positive environmental and social impact. You can use their filters to find exactly what kind of sustainable volunteering you’re looking for .

You can filter by ‘eco programs’ which will show you places where you can learn permaculture, farming, or contribute to an ecovillage.

If people are more your thing, use the 'social impact' filter. This will show you volunteer opportunities in NGOs, schools, and social projects.

Here are some examples of sustainable volunteering opportunities to spark your imagination:

  • Teach languages in Uganda
  • Work with kids to help them understand animal care in Cape Verde
  • Lend a helping hand on a farm in Brazil
  • Contribute your handyman skills in the US
  • Help this animal shelter in Tenerife

Check out plenty more environmental volunteer opportunities on Worldpackers.

The first step of green travel is being aware of what it is and why we should be trying to travel more sustainably . The second step is changing our mindsets and consciously making decisions that have less of an impact on the environment.

Traveling isn’t going to slow down anytime soon, so we need to make sure we find a way to do it in a way that isn’t going to destroy our planet . And that needs to start right now!

RV Disposal Options To Junk That Old Eyesore

' src=

  • Top Stories

Buying a new RV is fun, but moving an old one to the RV graveyard is a hassle. The good news is you have more RV disposal options than ever before. When it’s time for your RV funeral, consider these four ways to get rid of the old eyesore.

RV disposal

Photo via Flickr

Don’t get depressed when you see that old junker sitting in your yard. Go beyond the landfill and consider:

Selling on Craigslist or eBay

Think your junky old RV isn’t worth anything? Think again. Many DIYers out there want your rig more than you and they are willing to pay you to take it away. Vintage trailer and tiny house fans are looking everywhere for diamond-in-the-rough RVs.

“There’s definitely a market for that,” says tiny house designer Abel Zimmerman Zyl, founder of ZylVardos.com. He explains that since the small structures are typically 500 square feet or less and built atop towable foundations, many tiny house builders repurpose parts from old RVs.

In an article he wrote for TinyHouseBlog.com called “Recycling Old RV Trailers,” he shares his experience dismantling an old unwanted trailer he purchased for just $300.“It was a pretty moldy RV, with some appliances inside and an undamaged trailer frame,” he writes. “My goals were to get those two things out of it, and when all was done, I was about 80% successful in doing so.”

During a recent phone interview from his office in Olympia, WA, Zimmerman Zyl explains that old RVs are definitely in demand by ambitious DIYers. “There’s a whole culture of people who would be willing to take something and do a little bit of work to get something they can reuse,” he says.

Sell it to a junk RV buyer

If you can tow your RV away, one RV salvage yard near you will take it off your hands. Just search online for “RV salvage in (location).

Many junk auto and RV buyers like the nationwide COD Auto Buyers even offer free tow-away service and pay cash on the spot. You won’t make as much money as selling it yourself, but you’ll save time and effort.

Pay someone to get rid of it

Junk RV buyers like Southern California’s GoJunkFree.com offer the easiest way to dispose of your old RV. The downside? You pay them for the convenience of eliminating the eyesore.

“I don’t know of any other companies that do it,” says owner Evan Berger. He started towing away old RVs seven years ago and has taken rigs in every condition imaginable. From trash-stuffed trailers to a decrepit RV abandoned on a Beverly Hills property, there’s no rig that’s off-limits as long as it’s in Southern California.

GoJunkFree.com charges customers more if the RV has to be towed but if it runs owners save some money. Berger charges anywhere from the low $500s for small trailers up to about $1900 for motorhomes.

Dismantle it yourself

By dismantling it yourself you’ll send it to the RV graveyard on your own schedule. You’ll also reap the profits from recycling the various RV parts and scrap metal. Scan online for “Scrappers” and “Scrap Metal Recycling” and you’ll find scrap metal communities who can explain the ins and outs of tearing apart an old RV for cash. They’ll explain how to ID different types of metals, what they earn on the open market, and safety precautions.

Landfill regulations and neighborhood rules about old RVs make it harder than ever to deal with unwanted rigs. Hopefully at least one of these options will ease the burden on your wallet and your time.

Is It Safe in Moscow?

reycel travel

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. How To Get Rid Of An Old Camper Trailer

Old camper trailer

Travel trailers rarely age gracefully. The weathering elements that naturally break down and recycle old materials can do a number on them.

Because of the accompanying oxidation that yellows the surface and rodents looking for homes, a sitting camper trailer can deteriorate quickly.

If you have one of these unfortunate campers, I’m sure that you are well aware of what an eyesore they can be. In fact, that’s probably what brought you here.

If you want to get rid of an old trailer, here are the most popular ways of accomplishing that task.

Great Ways To Get Rid Of  Your Travel Trailer

dirty trailer

Warning – As with any home made before the 1970s, many older camper ceilings contain asbestos. If you are getting rid of an old camper, make sure that you take the proper steps to protect yourself and others from the asbestos.

If you don’t, you could be at risk for fines, lawsuits, and of course, the potential health related issues from the asbestos.

Donate it to the fire department.

There is a possibility that regulations and safety concerns might prevent this option. When firefighters practice putting out fires, they need to be careful not to release toxic fumes into the air.

If it does work out, you might be able to get rid of your camper trailer for free. Obviously, this is only a good option if the trailer no longer holds any value from a financial perspective.

If you want to go green and maybe make a little in the process, this is probably the option for you. Trailer materials are roughly 75% wood, so you won’t earn much, but every little bit helps.

The remaining 25% is made of metal, pipes, wires, etc. that can be salvaged and sold as scrap.

Donate it to charity.

This is ideal. That is, it is ideal if your trailer is in decent shape. First, it helps people. Second, they will give you a receipt for its value that you can use as a write off.

That is almost as good as cash when tax season comes around.

Third, as a rule, charities have all the forms and paperwork prepared, sometimes online, so that simplifies and speeds up the process. Here are a few popular charities that take campers:

  • VehiclesforVerterans – If you are in the United States, this might be a good option for you. There are an estimated 50,000 homeless veterans, and they need shelter. Don’t worry if transportation is an issue. The VFV will arrange the pick up, and it won’t cost you a cent.
  • Cars2Charities – At Cars2Charities, you can choose which cause your gift will support; animal rescues, medical aid, homelessness, veterans, human services, and more. There is also a personal incentive for you. The C2C improves the value of donations by enhancing the way they look and sound. They also perform mechanical repairs to improve the resale value if it increases the value of the donations enough to be worth it. And that increased value counts towards your write-off. Nice!
  • WheelsforWishes – This charity is for kids with life-threatening illnesses. It is part of the well-known Make-A-Wish foundation that helps hurting children to experience their dreams. To date, they have fulfilled over 9,000 wishes and counting; the proceeds from your old trailer might just be enough to fulfill one more wish.

Sell It For Parts

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so count your camper out yet. There are many people out there that love the satisfaction of a good restoration project. There are also conversion projects such as skoolies (school bus conversions) that are always finding uses for parts from dilapidated trailers. You can find these handy people through several popular sites:

  • Craigslist – What first started out as a small classified site for San Francisco has blossomed into a popular resource for all of North America.
  • Freecycle – Freecycle is a well-known international nonprofit network with nearly 10 million members. If you’re looking for something, you’ll probably find it. It makes it a great place to offload something, such as a trailer, that someone else will find very useful.
  • Ebay – Ebay is one of the first stops for many people. It’s a great place to find very specific items that nobody else has. If you want to sell a hard to find part from your trailer, I would consider listing it there. One downside is that Ebay will charge you for the transaction. Also, if you are new to their website, they artificially slow down your payment in an effort to prevent scammers from taking advantage of their customers.

The local junk yard is a good option if there are parts worth saving and you don’t want to remove them yourself. If the junkyard is going to pick it up for you, make sure to transfer the title and registration first. You don’t want to be liable for any accidents that might happen on the road.

Take it to the dump, hire a trash hauler, or rent a dumpster. There are a few services that you can use to solve and trash this unsightly issue.

One step below the junkyard is the city dump. Some things just aren’t worth saving. If the wood is rotten, there is more rust than metal, and the wiring is chewed to shreds, take that sad heap to the dump. Nobody wants it. It typically costs $100 – $200 to get rid of a whole trailer, but it will be gone.

Trash hauler

It will cost you a bit of extra money to have someone haul it for you. That might be worth it; especially if you don’t have access to a vehicle capable of transporting the camper.

Rent a dumpster

I don’t recommend this option because it requires a lot of effort and has a higher cost than other more convenient options. If you break the trailer down into pieces, you can chuck the debris into a dumpster and have it hauled away.

You will still need to pay the costs of dumping the scrap at the dump for both the trash hauler and dumpster options.
