The ship itself was great, rooms and bathroom were a good size for a smaller ship. The food and dining room staff were excellent. Entertainment and on board communication was poor only in French. Need to do a better job it ensure that customers that don’t speak French are informed on whats going on and are seated together in the dining room! The excursions that were provided were good but some were only with a French speaking guide. Overall we had great time on this Cruise!

All the staff were excellent. I especially would like to mention Stepan, Ana, Giovanni, Yani, Yasa, Raka, Vah, Bonbon, Titot, Dani, Christian. But everyone treated us like royalty. Not one time did someone say, "oh that is not my job." The accomodations were top class, the food excellent, loved the pool. Definately 5 stars.

The program in the Emerald ship was magnificently planned and discussed. The local music during the cruise was so informative. Long live the music from the Netherlands and Germany through Austria and Slovakya to Hungary! Just for the music, dances and songs I will do the cruise again!

Very nice trip. Your were OK with a few standouts like the vinegar tasting. Wish there had been more lectures and cultures talks. The one about modern German attitudes was particularly fascinating.

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.

The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.

Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.

Een Riviercruise over de Rijn geeft u de mogelijkheid om kennis te maken met een veelzijdig en schilderachtig landschap met bergen, tulpenvelden, kastelen, ruïnes en verscheidene historische en romantische steden.

De Rijn ontspringt in de Zwitserse Alpen en is maar liefst 1.233 kilometer lang. De langste rivier van Duitsland stroomt door het Bodenmeer, vormt een deel van de grens tussen Frankrijk en Duitsland en mondt uit in de Noordzee bij Rotterdam in Nederland. De maanden april tot oktober zijn het meest geschikt voor een cruise op de Rijn. Het is echter ook erg leuk om tijdens de kerstperiode aan boord van een riviercruiseschip te gaan voor een bezoek aan de traditionele kerstmarkten.

Een riviercruise over de Rijn begint vaak in Keulen, een van de oudste steden van Duitsland. Een must-see in Keulen is de Dom van Keulen, een UNESCO-werelderfgoed locatie met de relikwieën van de drie heilige koningen. Voor chocolade-liefhebbers kunnen wij een bezoek aan het chocolademuseum ten zeerste aanraden.

De deelstaathoofdstad van Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, heeft bezoekers van de stad veel te bieden. Voor liefhebbers van kunst en cultuur is er een breed scala aan galerieën en musea, zoals het Filmmuseum en het Goethe-museum. Voordat u gaat winkelen bij de beroemde Königsallee, raden wij u aan om een omweg maken langs de Media-Haven met zijn bijzondere architectuur.

Koblenz is een van de oudste steden van Duitsland. Bezienswaardig zijn hier de vesting Ehrenbreitstein met het Staatsmuseum Koblenz, waar de Moezel en de Rijn samenvloeien.

Geniet tussen Koblenz en Rüdesheim van het bijzonder mooie Midden-Rijndal met zijn vele kastelen en ruïnes, die op de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlijst staan. Bij Sankt Goarshausen ziet u de beroemde 125 meter hoge, steil oplopende leisteenrots Loreley op de oostelijke rechteroever van de Rijn. Voor veel reizigers is het uitzicht vanaf hier onvergetelijk mooi. 

Na een wandeling door de schilderachtige oude binnenstad van Rüdesheim kunt u met de kabelbaan over de wijngaarden naar het Niederwald monument gaan, de Germania. Nadat u een bezoek heeft gebracht aan de interessante stadsmusea kunt u zich ontspannen in de Drosselgasse en de omliggende steegjes waar u in een van de talrijke wijnbars de dag kunt afsluiten.

De hoofdstad van Rijnland-Palts, Mainz, is een prachtige oude stad met vakwerkhuizen, een indrukwekkende kathedraal en tal van belangrijke musea zoals het beroemde Gutenbergmuseum uit 1900. Dit museum werd door de inwoners van Mainz opgericht ter gelegenheid van de 500e verjaardag van Johannes Gutenberg, de uitvinder van de druktechniek en de boekkunst.

In Speyer raden wij u zeker een bezoek brengen aan de keizerlijke en St. Mary's Cathedral, de grootste nog bewaard gebleven Romaanse kerk ter wereld, die sinds 1981 op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat.

Straatsburg, de hoofdstad van de Elzas trekt bezoekers met veel meer dan alleen culinaire hoogstandjes. Begin uw dag met een bezoek aan de zogenaamde leerlooierswijk, de pittoreske vakwerkhuizen en de kleine steegjes. Wij raden u aan ook een bezoek te brengen aan de wereldberoemde kathedraal van Straatsburg, voltooid in 1439, en het weelderig en grandioos versierde Kammerzellhaus.

Wanneer en waarheen?

De Rijn is een van de langste rivieren van Europa en loopt o.a. door Nederland, Duitsland en Frankrijk. De beste reisperiode om te cruisen op de Rijn is van april tot oktober en in december tijdens de feestdagen.

Steden en bezienswaardigheden

Het is een van de oudste steden van Duitsland en heeft prachtige kathedralen: " Keulen ". U vindt hier de grootste Gotische kerk van Noord Europa, UNESCO werelderfgoed de Keulen Kathedraal, het Romeins-Duits museum en het chocolademuseum.

" Düsseldorf " heeft meer te bieden dan de beroemde winkelstraat Königsallee ("Kö"). Voor kunstliefhebbers is er genoeg te zien en beleven in de vele musea en galerijen. Van het Goethe museum tot het Film museum: de stad staat bol van cultuur. De Media Haven staat bol van de bijzondere architectuur en is een van de grootste attracties van de stad.

" Koblenz " behoort ook tot een van de oudste steden van Duitsland. De Moezel en Rijn komen hier samen. Ook mag u een bezoek aan het fort van Ehrenbreitstein niet overslaan, waar het museum van Koblenz is gevestigd.

Tussen Koblenz en Rüdesheim vaart u door de romantische " Mittelrheintal ", met talloze kastelen en ruïnes op de route. Er zijn volop wijnbars aanwezig dankzij de wijnvelden in de omgeving.

In " Mainz " wordt u ontvangen door een prachtige kathedraal, houten huizen en beroemde musea zoals het Gutenberg Museum. Voor uiteenlopende excursies bent u in Worms aan het goede adres. Bezoek de bijzondere kerken en musea of treed in de voetsporen van Martin Luther en ga op een queeste.

" Speyer " was een van de belangrijkste steden in het Romeinse Rijk en is bekend om de grootste Room-Katholieke kerk in de wereld, de St. Mary Kathedraal.

In " Straatsburg " vindt u het de wereldberoemde Kathedraal van Straatsburg, de wijk "Petite France" met haar nauwe steegjes en met hout bewerkte huizen en het mooi gedecoreerde Kammerzell Huis.

Met meer dan 30 musea heeft u in " Basel " genoeg te bezichtigen. Loop door de oude binnenstad langs de bistro's, winkeltjes en cafés of neem een kijkje op de binnenplaats van het gemeentehuis.

Maak kennis met het MS Esmeralda en vaar over de twee bekendste rivieren van Duitsland: de Rijn en de Moezel. Een bijzondere reis waarbij we het mooiste gedeelte van de Rijn oversteken. Hier komen we langs historische stadjes als Königswinter, wijnstadje Boppard en Rüdesheim. Via Koblenz varen we over de kronkelende Moezel naar Cochem. Op deze vaarroute geniet je volop van vele middeleeuwse plaatsen, bergen met kastelen en ruïnes en de vele hellingen met wijngaarden. Na iedere bocht verschijnt er weer een nieuwe verrassing!

Je reist per comfortabele touringcar naar Keulen. Je cruise vertrekt de volgende dag om 08.00 uur. Keulen is een mooie Duitse stad aan de Rijn. In de middeleeuwen hadden de bisschoppen in Keulen de macht, wat resulteerde in 150 kerken binnen de stadsmuren! Het werd de grootste Duitse stad van die tijd en de eerste met een gemeentelijke universiteit. Blikvanger van Keulen is natuurlijk de imposante Dom. Het gotische bouwwerk torent boven alles uit en na het leggen van de eerste steen in 1248 duurde het tot in de 19e eeuw voordat de kerk af was. De stad is rijk aan (herbouwde) historische monumenten en prachtige middeleeuwse panden. Museumliefhebbers kunnen in de stad uitstekend terecht. Museum Ludwig, het Stadtmuseum, het Museum voor Oost-Aziatische kunst en het biermuseum zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden. Keulen heeft tevens uitgestrekte winkelstraten, waar ieders winkelhart sneller van gaat kloppen!

Andernach is van oorsprong een Keltische vesting en is één van de oudste stadjes aan de Rijnoever. Het gezicht van deze stad wordt bepaald door de eeuwenoude ronde toren van 56 m hoog. In het gezellige centrum, achter de oude vestingmuren, zijn veel overblijfselen uit die tijd terug te vinden. Ook het Stadtmuseum en de ruïnes van de Stadtburg zijn interessant.

Cochem is geliefd vanwege de pittoreske straatjes en steegjes met fraaie vakwerkhuizen, de unieke delen van de middeleeuwse muur en een gezellig marktplein, waar je op een terrasje een heerlijke moezelwijn kan drinken. Het is één van de populairste plaatsen aan de Moezel met een fraaie ligging aan groene wijnhellingen. Te voet kan je naar de romantische Reichsburcht die boven het stadje uit torent en al van veraf te herkennen is.

Boppard is een stadje van afwisseling. Deze stad heeft veel te bieden op het gebied van geschiedenis en cultuur, maar staat ook vermeld op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO voor een van de mooiste landschappen van Duitsland. Een bijzondere bezienswaardigheid is het Romeinse castellum dat in 360 na Christus gebouwd is. Aanrader (geopend tot en met oktober) is om met de stoeltjeslift vanuit het Mühltal omhoog te gaan naar het hoogste punt op 240m waar vandaan je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over Boppard en de Rijn. Verder leent de mooie boulevard langs de Rijn, zich uitstekend voor een lange wandeling met als ideale afsluiter een heerlijk glaasje Riesling wijn.

Rüdesheim is een sfeervolle wijnstad aan de Rijn. De stad heeft een mooi middeleeuws centrum met wijnlokalen en vakwerkhuizen. Maak zeker een avondwandeling door de beroemde Drosselgasse en neem plaats op een van de gezellige terrassen met een goed glas wijn. Een aanrader is ook de kabelbaan naar het Niederwald monument. Op deze plek kun je genieten van een mooi uitzicht over de stad, de Rijn en het schitterend landschap.

Koblenz ligt op het punt waar de Moezel en de Rijn samenkomen. Door deze centrale ligging is Koblenz een belangrijk handelscentrum voor de wijde omgeving. Op het schiereiland tussen beide rivieren heb je een goed zicht op het water. Het is puur genieten op één van de terrasjes op de promenades In de Altstadt vind je onder meer gezellige winkelstraten, gezellige Weinstuben en vele bezienswaardigheden zoals de voormalige koopmanshuizen, het Blumenhof en Schloss Stolzenfels. Vanaf de Deutsches Eck, waar het standbeeld van keizer Wilhelm I pronkt, kan je met de kabelbaan, 118 meter boven de Rijn omhoog naar de machtige rotsvesting Ehrenbreitstein, die tot één van de grootste vestingen ter wereld behoort. Ook kan je een bezoek brengen aan één van de ‘Weinstuben’ en het ‘Weindorf Koblenz’, waar elk huis een ander Duits wijnbouwgebied symboliseert.

In de ochtend breng je een bezoek aan Königswinter. We varen naar het fraaie stadje Königswinter. Vanaf het dek heb je al een mooi uitzicht op de beroemde Drachenfels, een vroegmiddeleeuwse burchtruïne dat op een legendarische rots van 321 meter ligt. Het is prachtig wandelen over de berg ‘Drachenfels’. Ook het neogotische slot Drachenburg evenals de ruïnes van het oude gotische slot, zijn erg mooi om te zien. De ‘draak’ verwijst naar de draak die hier geleefd zou hebben en die door Siegfried gedood is. Königswinter ligt aan de voet van de heuvels van het Siebengebergte en wordt gekenmerkt door pittoreske 17e-eeuwse vakwerkhuisjes en stadsvilla’s. In de middag breng je een bezoek aan Keulen.

Vandaag reis je per comfortabele touringcar terug naar Nederland.

Flowing through six countries, the Rhine River cuts deeply through mountains, meandering between hillside castles and age-old winelands. This is Germany's landscape at its most dramatic, with spectacular views of forested hillsides alternating with craggy cliffs... idyllic villages appearing around each bend... and half-timbered houses and Gothic churches that appear as if plucked from a fairy tale world.

In Heidelberg – Germany's oldest university town – narrow cobblestoned lanes, shops and pubs housed in 17th-century structures in the Altstadt are kept lively by the cadence of 21st-century student life. On the hillside above the city, visit the romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle, celebrated in writing by many, including the German poet Goethe and American writer Mark Twain, who both spent time here. Twain wrote about the striking red sandstone ruins of Schloss Heidelberg in "A Tramp Abroad"; they were a magnificent residence for Bavarian royalty from the 13th to 18th centuries. The castle is an imposing ensemble of buildings, from different architectural periods, surrounding a central courtyard; from its terrace and gardens, the sweeping views impress along with the feel of more than 600 years of history.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is often called the "Venice of the North" because of its elaborate network of canals winding through a romantic historic center of cobbled streets and Dutch Renaissance architecture. A canal boat cruise reveals The Netherlands's historic capital from the inside (often with a slice of Dutch apple pie), as you glide along 17th-century waterways lined with trees, gabled merchant houses and vibrant urban life. One of Germany's oldest cities (founded in the 1st century AD), Köln (Cologne) was once a Roman provincial capital, and later a wealthy medieval trading port; the city was almost totally destroyed during World War II, but many of its architectural treasures have been restored – including the towering Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), a twin-spired masterpiece of High Gothic architecture that is the centerpiece of the city. With Tauck, you'll visit this imposing cathedral, along with the nearby Roman Germanic Museum, housing extraordinary exhibits of archaelogical finds from the Köln region.

2 women sue popular South Florida river cruise, claiming they were drugged on board

(WSVN) - A popular South Florida river cruise is being sued after two women say they were drugged on board. 7’s Heather Walker investigates.

Jungle Queen Riverboats is advertised as “fun for the whole family.”

The cruise includes a tropical island dinner, show and sightseeing in Fort Lauderdale.

Karren Hanson, suing tour boat: “We were there for some, you know, R&R, just to get away and enjoy some, you know, some girl time.”

But they say their girls trip took a turn shortly after they boarded the boat.

Heather Walker: “When did you realize something was wrong?”

Teresa Viscovich, suing tour boat: “Within 15 minutes.”

Longtime friends Teresa and Karren were expecting to have a good time, but after one glass of wine, they say things became foggy.

Teresa Viscovich: “My speech was slurred. I couldn’t walk right.”

They were confused, but one thing was clear.

Teresa Viscovich: “Something is very wrong.”

The next day, they called police.

According to the police report, the women “were concerned that their bartender … drugged their drinks.”

He was texting the women trying to meet up with them after the cruise.

Teresa Viscovich: “The way the bar is set up is, you can’t see anything he’s doing back there.”

Police investigated but found “no video on the cruise and no evidence of who, if anyone, had put anything in their drinks,” and the case was closed, despite the fact that the women had their hair tested, and the results showed they were positive for GHB, which the Drug Enforcement Administration says is known as a date rape drug.

Teresa Viscovich: “I’ve never done drugs a day in my life.”

The women are now suing Jungle Queens Inc. for failing to prevent drugging on a boat.

We went to the Jungle Queen to get a response.

A lawyer for the boat company sent a statement saying in part:

“Jungle Queens has taken the allegations … very seriously. Jungle Queens has worked hard at building a reputation … and the safety of their guests are of the greatest importance. We have conducted a thorough investigation and have concluded there is no evidence to support these baseless and defamatory allegations.”

Adding that after the cruise, the women “stated they had a great time in text message communications with a crew member.”

Jungle Queens Inc. filed motions to dismiss the complaints, saying the allegations were insufficient. But the case is moving forward, and the women continue to recover from that night.

Teresa Viscovich: “My vision doesn’t line up anymore. Now, it’s like this.”

Teresa says memory issues forced her to give up her nursing license.

Teresa Viscovich: “That was a tough one, because the way it goes is, once a nurse, always a nurse. That was a huge piece of my identity, and it’s gone.”

Both women say they suffer from severe anxiety.

Karren Hanson: “I don’t do a lot of social situations that I used to do because they don’t feel safe anymore.”

They still can’t believe one girls trip could change their lives so much.

s/v Rembrandt van Rijn was originally built as a herring lugger in 1947, then rebuilt as a three-mast passenger schooner in the Netherlands in 1994

S/V Rembrandt Van Rijn  was originally built as a herring lugger in 1947. The vessel was then rebuilt as a three-mast passenger sailing schooner in he Netherlands in 1994, sailing in Spitsbergen (1994 – 1996) and the Galápagos (1998 - 2001). The vessel later underwent a complete rebuilding and refurbishment program until 2011. The communication and navigation equipment has been completely renewed according to the latest SOLAS regulations.

Perfect for expedition cruising among small islands

The ship is well suited for expedition cruising among small islands and offer good open deck viewing areas, also when under sail. The two inflatable rubber crafts (Zodiacs) enable landing and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. 

Comfort and Character

Rembrandt van Rijn measures 49,50 meters in length, 7 meters in width, and has a draft of 2,8 meters. The average cruising speed on engines is 6,5 knots. It has an experienced crew of 12 persons on board including 2 tour guides. The ship can accommodate a maximum of 33 passengers in 16 cabins. It has one Triple Private cabin (with shower and toilet and porthole), six Twin Private Inside cabins (with shower and toilet, no porthole), and nine Twin Private cabins (with shower and toilet and porthole).

Age range & Nationality onboard

Passengers on a typical voyage range from their 30s to their 80s - with a majority usually from 45 - 65, but a little younger on the Rembrandt van Rijn, between 30 - 55. Our expeditions attract independent-minded travellers from around the world. They are characterised by a strong interest in exploring remote regions. The camaraderie and spirit that develops aboard is an important part of the expedition experience. Many departures have several nationalities on board.

Three simple but good meals of international cuisine per day are served buffet style in the restaurant and is prepared by our cook.

In keeping with our expeditions atmosphere, dress on board is informal. Bring casual and comfortable clothing for all activities. Keep in mind that much of the spectacular scenery can be appreciated from deck, which can be slippery. Bring sturdy shoes with no-slip soles and make sure the parka is never far away in case of the call "Whales!" comes over the loudspeaker and you have to dash outside. Wear layers since it is comfortably warm aboard the ship - and often cold on deck.

Electric Current

The electrical supply aboard the ship is 220 volt 50hz. Electrical outlets are standard European with two thick round pins. U.S. passengers may need a 220v/110v converter.

Excursions & Landings

Every day there will be excursions on land, weather and ice permitting. The landings will take three to six hours per day over untracked area. According to circumstances (the weather, the ice-situation or the passengers´ wishes) the program can sometimes be adjusted. Ample time will be devoted to wildlife, vegetation, geography and history.

The customary gratuity to the ship's crew and expedition leader is made as a blanket contribution at the end of the voyage. Tipping is a very personal matter and the amount you wish to give is at your discretion. We suggest to give cash in Euros, US Dollars or Danish kroner.

Non-smoking policy

On board our vessels we have a non-smoking policy. It is prohibited to smoke inside the ship. You can smoke in designated ares. Please respect the wishes of non-smokers.

The crew of the ´Rembrandt van Rijn´ consists of  9 experienced crew and 2 expedition guides and a cook. The sailors are in charge during sailing and will bring us ashore. 

Your physical condition

You must be in good general health and you should be able to walk several hours per day. The expedition is ship-based and physically not very demanding. Although we spend as much time as possible ashore, you are welcome to remain aboard the ship if you like. To join most excursions, you must be able to get up and down the ladder from the ship to the water level to board the Zodiacs. Staff will assist you in and out of the boats. This will become progressively easier with practice. Ashore it can be slippery and rocky. You are travelling in remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities, so you must not join this expedition if you have a life-threatening condition, or need daily medical treatment.

It is a little frustrating that I paid $1500 more than passengers who bought a ticket days before we left the dock and they got the same type of room as me. Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

PARIS — Meandering down the Seine R iver , the light breeze, gentle current and the sun’s glistening rays weren’t the only things the three kayakers were hoping to catch on a warm spring day — they were also on the hunt for garbage. 

By attaching nylon stockings to the side of their kayaks, they scooped up even the smallest fragments of plastic, as well as the everyday detritus of life in the French capital that washes to the river’s surface every time it rains. The members of the Arc de Seine Kayak club then sent what they had collected to be tested for bacterial levels. 

“My kayak capsized this morning and I’m OK,” a laughing Paul Maakad told NBC News on Sunday, at the Pont de Sevres in central Paris. 

But while Maakad, 40, and his fellow boaters said they were not scared of getting into the river, with less than 100 days to go before the 2024 Paris Olympics , fears are growing that events like the marathon swim, the triathlon and the paratriathlon could be postponed or canceled because of high pollution levels, or that the flotilla-based opening ceremony could be affected.

Earlier this month, Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris Organizing Committee, expressed confidence "that it will be possible to use the Seine,” but admitted that the swimming leg of the triathlon could be canceled if pollution levels are too high. "It’s what we want to avoid, of course,” he said .

His comments came days after a French charity warned that bacteria, including “pollution of fecal origin,” was far higher in the river than permitted. 

As part of an ambitious plan to open up the Seine to public swimmers by 2025 — after being illegal for 100 years because of dangerously high pollution levels — France has spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) on altering and upgrading the city’s antiquated sewage system, which now includes a 13-million-gallon overflow tank called the Austerlitz Basin. 

But in August, the swim portion of the test marathon event was canceled because the river failed pollution tests.

As the starting gun to the Games approaches, Fluidion, one of the companies the city of Paris contracted to monitor bacteria in the water, exclusively shared its findings with NBC News. 

A sample of water collected by the Pont Alexander III bridge, in the city’s center, showed E. coli levels two-and-a-half times the level considered safe for swimming. 

But that in itself isn’t necessarily a concern for the Games themselves, according to Dan Angelescu , the CEO of Fluidion, a tech company that develops water testing products. 

“In the summer when there is a lot of sunlight, when the water flow, river flow rate is really low, and when there is no rain for several weeks, let’s say two or three weeks without rain, you can actually reach really good water quality conditions,” he said in an interview this month.

But he added that even a small rain event could make E. coli levels shoot up. 

“You may swim in very polluted water and nothing may happen to you, or you may swim and you may develop itches, or you may develop infections, or you may catch a strain of E. coli that may be pathogenic," he said. "Those aren’t very common, but they exist, and that could get you really sick.” 

But he cautioned that exposure to other pathogens associated with the presence of E. coli could lead to contracting a norovirus, diarrhea “or you could get certain diseases that can really kill you.”

In a bid to boost public confidence, French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo have both promised to swim in the river to prove its cleanliness.

Pierre-Antoine Molina, a director of public policy in Paris, said he would follow suit. In an interview Monday, he said that water pollution in the river “has been gradually improving.”   

He added that the work to upgrade the city's sewage system had led to the modernization of wastewater treatment plants and an improvement in the network that separates wastewater and rainwater. 

“It’s an ancient city going back to Roman times, so inevitably that’s a big task,” he said, adding that a lot of buildings had been gone up after World War II “and the sewage system did not always cope.” 

Around 30 miles downstream from Paris, Edouard Combette, 50, showed no fear as he plunged headfirst into the storied waterway, which has inspired artists like the impressionist painter Claude Monet.   

“Life is good here,” he said after coming up for air, adding that he didn’t know whether the water was completely safe.  

“Don’t drink the water. You can swim, but don’t drink,” he said. “I haven’t heard of anyone dying or getting sick.”

Adults-only cruise launches on River Walk in downtown San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – Visitors to downtown San Antonio can now hop on an adults-only river barge that’s complete with a mariachi band.

GO RIO, the city’s river barge operator, announced this week that it has launched the Mariachi Sip & Cruise.

The cruise is for people 21 and older, and includes a tour around downtown, entertainment from Mariachi Amador, two drink tickets and a souvenir cup.

Boats depart at 7 p.m. on select dates this month and in May. The tours last 50 minutes and tickets cost $60 each.

GO RIO also announced that for the first time, it will showcase one of its boats during the Fiesta Flambeau Parade on Saturday.

“GO RIO boat captains and Girl Scouts from local troops will ride on the wheeled boat float, giving out GO RIO beads,” a news release states. “Marina, GO RIO’s lively turtle mascot, will lead the crowd in a Flambeau dance party -- be sure to be on the lookout for float #133 so you can join in!”

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade is known as America’s largest illuminated night parade with more than 200 parade entries and a typical attendance of about 750,000 spectators. It’s also broadcasted and livestreamed (on KSAT!) to about 1.5 million more people.

KSAT will broadcast a pre-party from 7-8 p.m., with parade coverage following from 8-11 p.m. The vanguard kicks off at 7:15 p.m. and the main parade starts at 7:45 p.m.

The cruise ship fuel surcharge is additional revenue to Viking Cruises, as are any additional charges relating to currency fluctuation other than for fully paid cruise fares and full fares, which fluctuations are beyond our control.
