Why should I choose Amboseli for a luxury trip?

“Amboseli is one of Africa’s most celebrated parks. The small but select collection of luxury accommodation possibilities is among the best in Kenya. There are accommodation options inside the park, and more outstanding choices in the unfenced conservancies around Amboseli. Giraffe, lion, cheetah, hyena, zebra, hippo and so much more are commonly sighted here. But it’s the elephants that really steal the Amboseli show – we know of no place in Africa where you can get this close to wild elephants. Unlike many other Kenyan or Eastern African parks, Amboseli is also a manageable size. In even a few days here, you’ll develop an intimate understanding of the park and almost certainly encounter many of its wildlife stars.”

What is included in an Amboseli luxury safari?

“Most safari trips here will operate on an all-inclusive basis. This means that all meals (three per day, and/or snacks, picnics and the like), game drives, village visits and, of course, accommodation will be included. Anything beyond that will be considered an extra to the quoted price. Extras may include scenic flights to get a really close look at Kilimanjaro; massages and spa treatments; and tips to lodge, camp or safari staff. Also, contrary to what you might think, you’ll be sharing your safari vehicle and guide with other travelers. If you want a private service, you’ll need to pay considerably more. What’s included on your luxury safari to Amboseli will vary from one operator to the next, and there are many packages from which to choose. Always ask any prospective safari operator what is and what is not included in the price they quote you.”

How long do I need for a safari in Amboseli?

“The best of Amboseli can easily be experienced in a couple of days, but longer tours are always a good idea. For a start, the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is often concealed by clouds. The longer you stay, the greater your chances of seeing the mountain in all its glory, and no matter how many days you stay, you’ll never tire of the view. Staying a little longer, even up to a week, also enables you to make the most of your time in the lodge or tented camp, relaxing in the luxurious surrounds. You can also build in time for visits to local Maasai communities or conservation projects. As for the park itself, its compact nature means that staying longer has considerable rewards, among them the chance to see everything more than once.”

What is the difference between Amboseli National Park and a private concession?

“The national park’s boundaries are clearly defined and the park is accessible only through an official gate, and after payment of the park fees. It is owned and run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, a government department, and anyone can enter. In contrast, most of the group ranches or private community conservancies that surround the national park are owned communally and run by Maasai communities. Only overnight guests can visit. Night drives, walking safaris, and off-road driving by guides (not allowed in the national park) are all possible in the conservancies. A small handful have a luxury lodge or tented camp where most of the staff are Maasai and where Maasai culture stands at the heart of everything they do. At least two of these inhabit the downslopes of the Chyulu Hills, between Amboseli, Tsavo West National Park and the Nairobi–Mombasa highway. Some of these concessions also host important conservation projects. These range from successful anti-poaching programs to innovative partnerships between Maasai communities and wildlife protection using traditional Maasai values.”

How does a typical day on an Amboseli luxury trip unfold?

“A typical day on an Amboseli luxury safari involves high levels of comfort and safari staff attending to your every need. A pre-dawn start to the day is a safari tradition, and with good reason. Animals are active and more easily seen at this time. In Amboseli, dawn is also when you’ve an excellent chance of seeing Kilimanjaro’s summit free from clouds. Your morning game drive (usually with blankets to ward off the morning chill) or walk varies in length, depending on what’s happening with the wildlife. By mid to late-morning you’ll be back at your lodge or camp. A more substantial breakfast awaits (your wake-up call is usually accompanied by hot drinks and a breakfast snack). This is followed by time in camp, a large spread for lunch and relaxation in your luxury tent or room. Afternoon tea, sometime after 3 PM, signals that it’s almost time for the afternoon drive in search of wildlife. Your guide will make sure that at sunset you’ll be in a place where you can watch the sun disappear over the horizon while nursing a sundowner (usually an alcoholic drink). Then you’ll be driven back to camp where you’ll have time to shower and dress for dinner. If you’re in a private conservancy, a night drive with spotlight is sometimes a possibility either side of dinner. And most nights on safari end around a campfire, and beneath an extraordinary spray of stars.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Accommodation on your Amboseli luxury safari splits evenly between luxury lodges and equally luxurious tented camps. The tented camps consist of a series of between eight and 12 large, atmospheric tents that rest atop a slightly elevated wooden platform. Each tent has a main room, bathroom and outdoor shower out the back, a writing desk, wooden trunks to evoke safaris past and an open deck area for sitting. The canvas walls are ideal for those who long to hear the night sounds of Africa while sleeping. The lodges have solid walls – perfect for light sleepers – and artful decorations rich in safari chic. Some of the structures combine the best of both worlds, with a mix of canvas and wood.”

How much does an Amboseli luxury safari cost?

“The price of an Amboseli luxury safari varies considerably. As an approximate ceiling, the price of your luxury safari will rarely rise above US$490 per person per day. If you’re traveling on your own (as opposed to traveling on a twin-share basis), expect to pay a single supplement that is rarely less than 75% of the price for two people traveling together. Factors affecting costs include the number of people on your safari, when you plan to visit, and, of course, just how luxurious you want your accommodation to be. Remember also that by choosing to travel outside high season, even by a few days, you can significantly reduce the price of your safari.”

A land of Giants

By East African standards, Amboseli is quite small – a mere 150 square miles of arid plains that become a dustbowl in the dry season months of July to October. And yet this is a land of giants. Amboseli is the park where Kenya’s biggest...

It was big, we saw almost all the animals except the rhino (but the rhino doesn’t live in Amboseli) and no cats. But we went on safari on for 1,5day. But the experience was so cool and wonderful, we would definitely go again.

Amboseli is great, but you can not see all the animals you can find in Maasai Mara. It is iconic for the view of mount Kilimanjaro and the many elephants. It is also recommended for birdwatching and has wonderful landscapes.

Amboseli was quite hot and dusty. We saw Kilimanjaro, elephants (even the one with huge tusks), lions setting hunting formation. I was still amazed, but if I compare it to Masai Mara, I cannot give it the same rating.

Because of the swamps the National Park concentrate a really high quantity of animals. It is absolutely beautiful and you see A LOT of animals all together. In really large quantities, it felt like a movie. Another unique thing is the view...

Amboseli National Park is the postcard park of most Kenya safari itineraries. This is where those photographs are taken of elephants with a backdrop of the (fast melting!) glaciers of Mt Kilimanjaro. I have spent many dreamy mornings parked under an acacia tree, a thermos of coffee in hand watching the rising sun tinge the snows of Kilimanjaro a pinky-red.

The elephants and the scenery are the real highlights of this park. In dry periods they flock here from miles around to quench their thirst in the swamps and pools that splash the dusty landscape in greens.

Another big reason to visit Amboseli is the chance to see conservation in action in the conservancies and other environmental and community projects surrounding the park.

What to see, where to stay.

Campi ya Kanzi

If elephants are your thing, you can’t do much better than Amboseli where herds of these magnificent beasts graze in the shadow of the equally magnificent Mt. Kilimanjaro. By far the best place to stay is not in the park itself but 30km away at Campi ya Kanzi in the Kimana Community Wildlife Sanctuary, situated between Amboseli and Chyulu Hills. It’s a very high-end Maasai-run camp that was set up to aid the local community and conservation projects. Its excellent location means you can see wildlife in the conservancy, Amboseli and Chyulu all from one base.

Ol Tukai Lodge

If you prefer to stay within Amboseli National Park, I'd recommend Ol Tukai Lodge which is fairly luxurious but at around USD $300 per person per night it's decent value – you can also see Mt Kilimanjaro from the bar! It's a good choice for families and they offer a range of packages including transfers from Nairobi.

19 day small group tour, when to visit amboseli national park.

Due to the general dryness of the region’s climate, Amboseli can be visited at any time of the year. But, it should be kept in mind that during the rainy seasons of March-May and November, the wildlife does take advantage of the additional water sources to disperse across the plains outside of the park boundaries.

By contrast, at any other time the wildlife congregates around the park's swamps and water sources and is much easier to see. February can be uncomfortably hot.

Amboseli safari highlights

Amboseli is famed for its elephants. In dry periods they flock here from miles around to quench their thirst in the swamps and pools that splash the dusty landscape in greens.

In fact, Amboseli is so good for elephants that the giants here are a part of one of the world’s longest running elephant study programmes, and much of what we know about elephant lifestyle and biology has been gleaned through Amboseli elephants.

Kilimanjaro views

We’ve all seen those pictures of Africa’s two giants: Mt Kilimanjaro (5,895m) with elephants in the foreground. In fact, for many people it's this image that is the very reason they flew to East Africa in the first place. But here’s a thing to know: Although Africa’s biggest mountain towers over Amboseli, it’s actually located entirely within Tanzania.

This part of the Rift Valley is hot and bone dry for much of the year and were it not for the underground water sources that bubble up to the surface in Amboseli then there would likely be little in the way of wildlife here. As it is, this life-giving liquid has created large marshes and pools of water that, during the long dry season in particular, attract large amounts of wildlife.

The area is especially favoured by elephants and masses of them can be seen here at certain times, but hippos, grazers and bird life all congregate here too. And carnivores are known to lie in wait.

Kimana Community Wildlife Sanctuary

This is one of the most progressive community wildlife conservancies in East Africa and, despite its relatively diminutive size, has been a blueprint for many other conservancies.

Visiting the conservancy is a fine way of mixing safari with a genuine contribution to conservation and support for the local community. It’s about 30km east of Amboseli.

How to get to Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is fairly easy to fit into an overland journey along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway or as part of an overland journey between Kenya and Tanzania.

Most people on a short, two-week safari holiday opt to save time by flying into the park with Air Kenya ( www.airkenya.com ) and Safari Link ( www.flysafarilink.com ) from Nairobi, the coast or Tsavo and Masai Mara parks.

A long-standing highlight of Kenya’s safari circuit, 392 km2 (151 square mile), Amboseli was set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1899 and made a national park in 1974.

Renowned for its high density of elephants, the park forms the unfenced core of an 8,000 km2 (3088 square mile) ecosystem that includes large tracts of Maasai community land both in Kenya and across the border in Tanzania.

Amboseli National Park lies at the northern base of Mount Kilimanjaro and, cloud permitting, offers tremendous opportunities to photograph plains wildlife below the snow-capped peak of Africa’s tallest mountain.

Highlights of Amboseli National Park

The 5,891m (19,327ft) summit of Kilimanjaro – the world’s tallest freestanding mountain and Africa’s highest peak – actually stands within Tanzania. Still, the finest views of it are to be had from Amboseli.

For much of the day, the volcanically-formed mountain is rendered invisible by a shroud of clouds, but this usually lifts at dusk and dawn to reveal the iconic snow-capped peak rising a total 5km (3,1mi) above the dusty plains in all its breathtaking glory.

A dominating blue presence on maps of the park, the eponymous Lake Amboseli only holds water briefly in years of exceptional rainfall.

The rest of the time, this flat dry dust bowl supports large numbers of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and various exotic birds. The exotic birds you can expect to include the Secretary bird, Yellow-necked spurfowl, and the localized Pangani longclaw.

Scattered stands of umbrella thorn woodland, dominated by the distinctive flat-topped Acacia tortilis, are home to giraffe, impala, and a host of striking dry-country birds, notably Von der Decken’s hornbill, red-and-yellow barbet, rosy-patched bushshrike, and steel-blue whydah.

The permanent Enkongo Narok and Olokenya Swamps, fed by underground streams that rise on the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro, are home to plentiful hippos and a wide range of aquatic birds, among them long-toed lapwing, painted snipe, great white pelican, and grey crowned-crane.

Another must-see landmark is Observation Hill, which offers panoramic views across a pretty lake towards Tanzania, with Kilimanjaro often visible at dusk and dawn.

Amboseli’s most famous and entertaining mammalian residents are the subjects of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project , founded in 1975 by Dr. Cynthia Moss and retains detailed records of most births, deaths, and relationships within an extended community of around 50 families, whose range centers on the national park.

As a result of this close monitoring, the elephants of Amboseli are unusually well-habituated and contain a high proportion of old tuskers – excellent sightings are all but guaranteed.

The core national park is surrounded by several private conservancies that comprise Maasai community land and offer exclusive traversing rights to one or two small camps or lodges.

The conservancies support several species seldom observed within the national park, for instance, Gerenuk and Lesser kudu, and the ability to head off-road allows guests to make the most of cheetah and lion sightings.

Practical Advice for an Amboseli Safari

• Coming by road, Amboseli is 230km (143mi) from Nairobi via Namanga, a drive that includes some heavily corrugated sections and takes about five hours in either direction.
• Road safaris in Kenya often combine Amboseli with Tsavo West National Park, which lies about 120km (75mi) away along a poor dirt road.
• It is also possible to fly into Amboseli from the likes of Nairobi, Mombasa, and the Masai Mara.
• Several safari lodges lie within the national park, and some excellent upmarket tented camps service the surrounding conservancies.

For Angama Amboseli guests, we work with Kilimanjaro Balloon Safaris — a respected company with impeccable safety records.

Hot-air ballooning is available to guests staying at Angama Amboseli. The early morning drive to the launch site, at Kimana Gate, is one hour from the lodge.

Breakfast and bubbles are served wherever you land. This is a shared, festive affair with platters of breakfast favourites such as bacon, eggs and pancakes. For guests who would prefer a more private experience, we can arrange for an exclusive private picnic breakfast to be set up.

Shared baskets are priced at USD $450 per adult and USD $350 per child aged 4-11 years. With a valid Kenyan ID, prices are USD $375 per adult and USD $275 per child. Pricing is subject to change.

Each balloon carries 12-16 passengers, making it easy to accommodate families and groups. The large baskets make for more space per person and the balloons have turning vents so the pilot can rotate the balloon during flight, giving everyone a 360-degree view of the game and topography.

All of the hot-air ballooning operators we work with have impeccable safety records. All passengers should be sure they do not have any pre-existing medical conditions, which could be affected by the ballooning experience or could prevent them from safely taking part — please seek professional medical advice if unsure. The landing can be bumpy, so elderly guests or those with injuries should consider this unpredictable possibility. Children must be age four or older and accompanied by a responsible adult. Regrettably, no expectant mothers may participate on a flight.

Flight time may vary depending on the weather conditions, but it usually lasts approximately one hour.

In order to complete the quick paperwork, watch the inflating of the balloons and take to the air at sunrise, guests will be awoken at 04h00, with a cup of tea or coffee delivered to their tent.

But where should you go for your first African Safari? 

The options are limitless, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, they are all great Safari destinations with pros and cons for each. 

You’ve definitely heard of Lion King and the famous Phrase, Hakuna Matata, but did you know that the iconic rock cliff scene that is synonymous with the movie was inspired by rock formations in Chyulu hills not far from Amboseli national reserve?

Well, now you know. 

In this post, we will compare two of the best game reserves  in Kenya, Masai Mara vs Amboseli.

Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara, or simply the Mara, is a world renowned game reserve in Narok, Kenya. It is popular among Safari enthusiasts for its population of the big five, Elephants, Lions, Buffalos, Rhinos and Leopards. 

It is also famous for the annual spectacle that is wildebeest migration from Serengeti in the south to the mara in the north.  The great wildebeest migration helped secure the Mara’s place in the natural wonders of the world list .

The masai mara is located in the south east of Kenya in Narok county. It is approximately 160 miles from Nairobi, the Capital city of Kenya.

Distance from Nairobi

Masai mara is located approximately 160 miles from Nairobi. There are two options to get there; by road via the Maai Mahiu route or by air from Wilson airport.

On the other hand, Amboseli is approximately 135 miles from Nairobi and you can also get there by road or by air.

The conservancy experiences two seasons, dry and wet. The dry season is from June to October. It is usually sunny in this period but it can still rain from time to time. 

The wet season is from Nov to May. Nov to Dec is the short rains season. The rainfall eases in Jan and Feb before the onset of the long rains from March to May.

Amboseli Weather

Amboseli weather is usually hot and dry with average temperatures of 28°C during the day and 15° at night. 

Similar to the Mara, Amboseli also has both dry and wet seasons. The dry season is from June to Sept. Short rains begin to fall in Oct – Dec. 

Jan and Feb are usually dry but there are some scattered showers. The long rainy season starts in March – May.

Best time to visit Masai mara

The best time to visit the Masai Mara game reserve is between late June and early October. This is the best time for wildlife viewing and you’ll get a chance to experience the wildebeest migration. 

Prices might be a bit higher during this time but the experience is out of this world. 

Jan to May is also a good time but the long rains make some of the roads impassable and wildlife sightings are less. You can get good deals during this time as it’s the low season. 

Best time to visit Amboseli National Park

The best time to visit Amboseli National park is from June to October. This is during the dry season when most animals, particularly elephants, retreat to swamps to quench their thirst. 

A number of camps and lodges are located around these watering holes which gives visitors a perfect chance to experience African wildlife up close. 

This period also happens to be the peak season hence its recommended to book your tour in advance if you want to get a good deal.

Safari Cost

The cost of a Masai Mara safari will depend on various things. For instance, duration of the safari, whether you’ll be staying at a campsite or one of the lodges, whether you’re traveling in a group, etc. 

The average cost for a 3 day safari ranges from USD350 for a budget camp to more than USD1500 for a luxury tented camp or lodge.

Safari in Kenya? – Tsavo, Amboseli or Masai Mara. Which one is the best?

In order to properly plan the best safari in Kenya, you need to understand which one of the three big parks suits you the most: Tsavo, Amboseli or Masai Mara?

Either you plan a safari in Kenya independently, or have a tour operator taking care of everything in the back, organizing your first safari is not easy at all. There are too many options to choose from, price categories that are on a first sight difficult to understand and a timetable you need to delicately plan in order to not spend hours and hours on the road.

I traveled to Kenya reporting on national parks and safari experiences, and was able to explore some of its safari parks. These are my thoughts on which safari experience in Kenya you should visit. A safari in Tsavo National Park, a safari in Amboseli National Park or a safari in Masai Mara Natural Reserve, which one is the best?

Planning a safari from zero

When it comes to plan a safari trip in Kenya, the first question to answer is mobility and flexibility. Unlike Europe or North America, where traveling from A to B is extremely simple and options are endless, transportation in Kenya does not work like that. Unless you have a very high budget and can afford traveling by private charter (around 200 – 300 EUR per flight) , the only way to properly move around is by land.

Therefore, either you start your trip in Nairobi or Mombasa (Kenya’s two key cities), expect to drive for hours and hours in order to get to a national park or a natural reserve. For example, Masai Mara is located just 280km away from Nairobi. Still, you need about 6 hours to get there. The same goes from Nairobi to Amboseli, where its distance between is just 190km, but you need 4 hours to get there.

And while is possible to plan a 10 day trip and visit all three most important wildlife parks in Kenya, Masai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo, take into consideration this would involve spending most of the time driving from one side to the other and wasting valuable time.

NOTE: a standard safari trip in Kenya would involve visiting two parks for 2-3 nights each. This will be enough time to get a good glimpse of the wildlife in Kenya and not get overwhelmed by the long and monotonous drives.

Best safari in Kenya

On a first sight, Masai Mara seems to be the perfect place to go for a safari. It is the epicenter for the wildebeest migration within the months of August to October and it is worldwide known as one of the best national parks in the world.

However, expensive permits, availability in accommodation and long drives, should be factors to be considered before you book your trip.

Fortunately, Tsavo or Amboseli are offering great options for those with limited budget, time or a tight schedule.

INSIDE TIP: Located just 7 km away from Nairobi, the Nairobi National Park is a good place to visit only if you are planning to skip any other bigger National Parks in Kenya. The wildlife here is way less than anywhere else in the country and I would prefer to pay a bit more, extend one or two nights and visit Amboseli.

Why should you visit Masai Mara Natural Reserve?

Beside the wildebeest migration, Masai Mara is always great. It is the only park in Kenya where you can spot all big five in a single day and experience wildlife encounters that will simply leave you speechless.

It is one of the most beautiful safari spots in the world and even if you miss the migration, you will never leave disappointed.

On the other hand, Masai Mara’s entrance fees and overnight fees are the most expensive in Kenya. Expect to pay anything between 200-300 USD per day for a simple private tour and depending on the time of the year, reservations have to be done months in advance.

Still, for those looking to see the best of Kenya, Masai Mara is the option to go.

Why should you visit Amboseli National Park?

Located at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the landscapes in Amboseli are magical. Elephants roaming freely in groups of 20 or 30, and thousands of flamingo flying around and dancing in the air.  Additionally, to its smaller size and closer distance to Nairobi, Amboseli has become this quick getaway from the city and an easy place to explore wild Kenya in a limited time.

With lower prices, great road conditions connecting the park and extraordinary wildlife, Amboseli is never a miss.

However, wildlife in Amboseli is way less than in Masai Mara. Big cats are more difficult to spot and leopards have not been seen in decades around this area.

Why should you visit Tsavo National Park?

Tsavo seems to be the perfect introduction for a safari in Kenya. It is the largest national park from all three in this article, and due to its location, the logistics of planning a trip to Tsavo are the simplest in whole Kenya.

Great signalization and easy access makes Tsavo a good place for a self-driving safari and since it is the least popular park from all three, you won’t be surrounded by a dozen cars when you spot a lion or a big elephant.

On the other hand, many think Tsavo is not as special as Masai Mara and Amboseli. The spotting of wildlife is way more difficult due to its massive size and large vegetation. Also, travelers can unfortunately spend a full weekend here without spotting a big cat.

A safari in Kenya vs a safari in Serengeti?

Combining Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara on the same trip seems to be the most reasonable choice when it comes to planning a safari. They are not only the center for wildlife experiences in the world, but they are also located right next to each other.

And its true. Visiting both parks on the same trip is an experience of a lifetime and something only few people can do. However, before you back your bags and book a lodge, take into consideration the logistical challenge that visiting Masai Mara and Serengeti on the same trip is.

First of all, Masai Mara is located in Kenya, while Serengeti is located in Tanzania. Beside the visa costs and border crossing, there are no direct connections from Masai Mara to Serengeti. You will have to drive back to Nairobi, from there go to Arusha and once in Arusha take a transfer to Serengeti – something you need to plan at least 2-3 days in doing.

Additionally, while Serengeti is one of the most extraordinary safari parks in the world, it is also one of the most expensive. A day in Serengeti starts at 300 USD per person, while a day in Amboseli can get as low as 100 USD per person.

Combining Serengeti with a trip to Kenya as doable, it just requires a bigger planning from your side.

What is the best e-sim for traveling in east africa.

When it comes to traveling in Africa, having a good internet connection all the time is essential.

When traveling, I started using e-SIMs from Flexiroam or Airalo. I love these two companies, and when crossing the border between Tanzania and Kenya, I recommend getting a Global Plan from Flexiroam and activating it when crossing. Once settled in, I prefer to get a local physical SIM to save some costs. However, Flexiroam has been a lifesaver.

  Day 1: transfer from Nairobi to Amboseli national park

Upon arriving in the park you will be welcomed by scenic views of the backdrop of mountain Kilimanjaro which is capped by snow, you will check into your lodge, have lunch and then go to the park for an afternoon game drive. Amboseli national park is a scenic national park with a backdrop of snow capped mountain Kilimanjaro with a huge population of elephants, on the game drive you will see many animals such as elephants, buffaloes, wildebeests, lions, leopards and many more. in the evening you will drive back to your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Then you will drive back to your lodge for breakfast, checkout and head to Amboseli national park which is a drive of approximately 4-5 hours using Mombasa route. When you arrive in Tsavo West national park you will check into your lodge, have lunch and then drive to park for an afternoon game drive. On the game drive you will spot animals such as impalas, spotted hyenas, wildebeests, lions, elephants and many more. In the evening you will drive back to your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

Tsavo East national park is an excellent habitant for a large population of animals with a huge number of elephants , upon your arrival you will check in to your lodge, have lunch and in the afternoon you will go for a game in drive in the plains of Tsavo East national park. on the game drive you will spot many animals such as herds of elephants, spotted hyenas, black-backed jackal, lesser kadu, banded mongoose, lion, leopards, lesser kudu and many more. in the evening you will drive back to your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.
