San Diego Zoo Safari Park  Launches New Platypus Cam Presented by Animal Crossing™:  New Horizons

We’re Here Together Campaign Brings Platypuses to Your Home—Virtually

While the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is temporarily closed to on-grounds visitors due to COVID-19 restrictions, online guests can now visit the platypuses at the Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia on their smartphone or computer. The all-new Platypus Cam presented by the Animal Crossing™: New Horizons game provides livestreaming video of the Safari Park’s platypus pair as they swim and frolic in their world-class habitat—including three pools, naturalistic river banks, extensive tunnels and nesting areas. The Animal Crossing: New Horizons game is available on the Nintendo Switch system and invites players of all ages to create their own island paradise while making friends with charming animal residents in the process.

“San Diego Zoo Global is grateful for Nintendo’s support of Platypus Cam, adding to the many ways our guests engage with wildlife during these trying times,” said Ted Molter, chief marketing officer of San Diego Zoo Global. “Platypus Cam is the newest addition to San Diego Zoo Global’s We’re Here Together Campaign, which invites guests from around the world to stay connected to their favorite animals and species through a wealth of free online content, entertainment and educational tools.”

Guests at home can view livestreaming video from the platypus habitat at   sdzsafaripark.org/platypus-cam .

The two platypuses featured on the cam—an 8-year-old male named Birrarung and a 15-year-old female named Eve—serve as ambassadors for the species outside of their native Australia. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is currently the only zoo outside of Australia to house platypuses.

Platypuses can be difficult to see, both in the wild and in a zoological setting, so being able to get a glimpse of these elusive, busy animals is a rare and special experience.

The platypus is a semiaquatic, egg-laying mammal found along the eastern coast of Australia, within the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. They live in freshwater streams, creeks and rivers. The two platypuses at the Safari Park communicate the importance of fresh water for both humans and wildlife. Freshwater resources and habitats are being affected by pollution and climate change. People are encouraged to be part of the solution and protect wildlife through water conservation measures and practices that help slow climate change.

To understand what is occurring with platypuses in Australia—and to better understand the conditions they live in, and those affecting other river species—San Diego Zoo Global has pledged an ongoing commitment of funds to field conservation of platypuses. San Diego Zoo Global, the University of Melbourne and the environmental research and conservation group  cesar  have teamed up on a unique project designed to learn more about the elusive platypus and the threats to its survival. The project uses innovative technology, in which samples of water are tested for traces of environmental DNA (eDNA) to learn about the species present in freshwater ecosystems.

Platypus populations were considered to be at risk before the 2019 wildfires that burned through Australia. The species’ status was recently uplisted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, to Near Threatened. Unfortunately, the region that burned was considered to be a stronghold for the platypus, with some of the healthiest populations in the country. With funding raised by San Diego Zoo Global’s Australian Wildfire Relief Campaign, researchers are now also going to assess the status of the platypus population in the wake of the fires, with the hope of guiding future recovery for the species.

In addition to the Platypus Cam presented by the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game, San Diego Zoo Global offers 12 other live wildlife cams where online visitors can check in on their favorite animals and enjoy daily updates . Recently, the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park have seen a 1,000% increase on average in online webcam viewership. The live wildlife cams are reaching audiences around the world—from the United States to the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, India, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Germany and China,

San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomes okapi calf to the herd

The as-yet-unnamed calf will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in april in the safari park's african woods area, by eric s. page • published april 8, 2024 • updated on april 9, 2024 at 4:25 pm.

The number of okapis at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park increased by one recently with the birth of a male calf of the unique species nicknamed the "forest giraffe," it was announced Monday.

The as-yet-unnamed calf, which was born on Feb. 18, will be able to be viewed by safari park visitors daily starting in April in the safari park's African Woods area.

The calf was the first born to Mahameli (“Meli,” mother) and Mpangi (Mm-pong-ee, father). Zookeepers say the young buck nurses several times a day and "likes to run circles around his mom and even playfully kick her once in a while," the safari park said in a news release sent out on Monday. "He also started taste-testing the [vegetation in his habitat], following Meli’s lead."

The safari park and zoo now share a total of eight okapi between them: There are four males (Nanoki, Mpangi, Upepo and the calf) and one female (Mahameli) up at the safari park, while the zoo has Zuri & Toby, both males, and a single female (Subira).

Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.

A reclusive species rarely seen in the wild, Okapi are native to central Africa and were discovered by Europeans in 1901. Although often confused with a zebra due to the black and white striped patterns on its front and hind legs, the okapi is actually the closest living relative to the giraffe.

Various causes, including habitat destructing and hunting, threaten the wild okapi in its native Central Africa, but, fortunately, "one-fifth of the okapi habitat within Africa’s Ituri Forest was designated as a wildlife reserve [in 1992,]" the news release also stated. "And since okapis are an 'umbrella species,' by aiding in their conservation, we also contribute to the protection of other wildlife that coexist in their African habitat."

A Momentous Hatch

Safari park welcomes a very special egg.

On January 20, a seemingly ordinary egg was laid at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It looked like many of the eggs that came before it: white, large, oblong. But this one was different, as it marked the beginning of a milestone moment that’s cause for celebration. On March 16, this California condor egg became the 250th to hatch at the Safari Park—a landmark for this native species, which once came within a breath of extinction.

Laid by Mexwe (pronounced “MEX-weh”) and fathered by Xol-Xol (pronounced “HOLE-hole”), this egg is “eggstra”-special in more ways than one, as it’s not Xol-Xol’s first time making history. In 1982, he was one of only 22 California condors remaining on Earth. He was rescued at three months old and brought to the Safari Park after being neglected by his parents, who were still raising a chick from the previous year. Xol-Xol thus became the first California condor to be cared for by people as part of the California Condor Recovery Program—a collaborative conservation effort to secure the future for the species. This remarkable bird went from being one of the last of his kind on Earth to helping his species make a mighty comeback. To date, Xol-Xol has fathered over 40 chicks with three different mates!

san diego zoo safari park webcam

Together, Xol-Xol and Mexwe are experienced parents. Their newest chick, whose sex is not yet determined, is named Emaay (pronounced “eh-MY”), a Kumeyaay word meaning sky, and is the ninth they’ll raise together since being paired in 2015. Interestingly, California condors tend to be monogamous and share all nest duties, including incubating the egg, brooding and feeding the chick, and defending the nest.

san diego zoo safari park webcam

Every California condor egg is critical to the future of the species. So, when Mexwe laid the egg, it was carefully removed by expert teams and placed into a temperature- and humidity-controlled incubator. In the nest, the egg was covertly replaced with a replica that looks and feels just like the real one so the parents could continue to care for it. With critically endangered species, including California condors, this is common practice to ensure the safety of the egg.

san diego zoo safari park webcam

While in the incubator, wildlife care specialists closely monitored the embryo’s development every day. One of these checks involves “candling” the egg by using a light placed against the shell to check the position of the chick and determine if it was in the right position to successfully hatch its way out. Due to a suspected malposition, the egg was taken to the Safari Park’s Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center for computed tomography (CT) imaging. After examining the results, the team received good news, as the chick’s position was determined to not be of concern. Emaay was able to begin pipping successfully.

san diego zoo safari park webcam

Pipping is the initial breaking of the shell by the hatching bird, and it begins around 55 days after an egg is laid. If everything is going smoothly, the egg is placed back in the nest, swapping it with the faux egg, and the condor parents take it from there. This stage is vital for the hatching bird and parents to begin bonding. In this case, Xol-Xol and Mexwe were immediately attentive, helping Emaay successfully break through the eggshell—and officially making it the 250th California condor hatched at the Safari Park!

After hatching, the parents tucked the chick into the nest, sharing their warmth with their little one. This act forms a strong bond between the parents and chick and allows them to keep a close eye while the chick begins eating and gaining strength. The 250th chick hatched at the Safari Park is a monumental milestone for the conservation of this magnificent species, but to Xol-Xol and Mexwe, they’re behaving naturally, taking care of their chick and doing what condors do.

Safeguarding Today and Tomorrow

Prior to Xol-Xol’s rescue, not much was known about California condors, and the future of the species was in peril. But with decades of experience caring for other vultures and condors, we were able to put our expertise to work. Over the last 40 years, we’ve developed cutting-edge solutions to help restore sustainable California condor populations across the region. Through a long-term collaborative conservation breeding program, we incubate, hatch, and raise condors at the Safari Park for reintroduction into native ecosystems, working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), and other partners. At six release sites throughout California, Arizona, and Baja California, Mexico, hope soars over wide-open landscapes as together we reintroduce condors into the habitats from which they had once disappeared. Currently at least 50 birds join the population annually, and 12 to 15 chicks hatch in native habitat every year.

san diego zoo safari park webcam

While the birds have made a mighty comeback, they’re still critically endangered. California condors are a keystone species, inherently connected to the health of their native ecosystems. These vultures act as unsung sanitation heroes across the Southwest, cleaning up carcasses and keeping disease from spreading. And because these local legends are threatened by habitat loss, lead poisoning, and disease, the regions they inhabit are at risk, too.

In addition to restoring populations, we collaborate with partners to find solutions for these threats through our Southwest Conservation Hub . In recent years, the deadly highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) swept through populations and took a toll. We’re participating in a historic vaccine trial for HPAI that will help secure the long-term health of California condors by protecting them from the disease.

san diego zoo safari park webcam

Emaay is expected to be ready to join the native population in 2025. With the 250th California condor hatching at the Safari Park, we’re celebrating the strides we’ve made in recovering the population of this species and the hope it brings for their future. Through collaboration and innovation—and a little help from Xol-Xol himself—we’re saving, protecting, and caring for these local icons. From an all-time low of just 22 birds, there are now more than 560 living California condors, more than half of which soar over Southwest coastlines, mountains, and deserts. We look forward to the day this little chick becomes one of those birds. Conservation successes don’t happen overnight, but the day-to-day work adds up to make an impact for critically endangered species that ripples out for generations to come.

Tune in to our livestreaming Condor Cam for an inside look at how parents raise their chicks, and discover how you’re making a difference for local wildlife and ecosystems through our Southwest Conservation Hub .
