Scandinavian Modern Farmhouse Home Tour with The Little Bird

We’re back with another home tour and I’m thrilled to be sharing one so amazing. If you’re new to the Farmhouse Living blog, once a month mom and I share a home tour of another homebody that has tons of inspiration to give.

Today we’re sharing Jennie of @The.Little.Bird with her stunning new build home. Jennie started out as a farmhouse sign maker and launched into sharing her home as she built it. Her home is so unique with a mix of Scandinavian, modern farmhouse, and mid-century. You’re going to love this one.

When you pull up to Jennie’s home the exterior immediately catches your eye. I love the contrast of the white board and batten with the black painted brick. It’s modern but still cozy and welcoming.

LIVING ROOM

The living room leans minimal, but the accents in the room make such a huge impact. This is an open concept floor plan yet each area is intentionally dedicated. I love the organic feel the concrete fireplace brings. The mix of leather and fabric upholstery on the furniture brings interest and warmth. She layers in pillows perfectly to add another dose of cozy. The staircase functions as a focal point, almost artwork, in this room.

scandinavian house tour

This kitchen features two-tone cabinets and stunning waterfall quartz countertops. I love that the kitchen is open to the living and dining, but is in it’s own nook making it a dedicated space. The concrete accent is carried into the kitchen on the hood. She has Cafe Appliances that seamlessly flow with the colors of the cabinets. The pendants are from Lighting Connection and the tile is from Riad Tile .

DINING ROOM

The dining room is warm and modern. The windows bring so much light making it the perfect spot for entertaining. Jennie and her husband Brad love to have guests so thoughtfully planning this space during their build was really important. The staircase remains a statement here as well. You don’t need to spend much on accents when you have that stunning feature.

MASTER BEDROOM

Jennie’s master bedroom makes a statement with black vertical shiplap. I love the gold accent lighting and layered bedroom to bring warmth. The nightstands are unique with glass cabinet doors, but Jennie shares that they’re functional with baskets in them. I love the look.

The master bath has a wet room for the shower and tub. This is not only beautiful but super functional for them since they have little kiddos that can splash to their heart’s desire in that area.

scandinavian house tour

GUEST BEDROOM

The guest room has a boutique hotel feel. If I was a guest I would have trouble “checking out” of Jennie’s home. Jennie DIYed the board and batten in this room and made these signs over the bed as well.

The bathroom in this room flows perfectly. It also features Riad tile with the modern floors making a huge statement.

scandinavian house tour

HARPER’S ROOM

Jennie’s daughter Harper’s room is so sweet and modern. I love the tasseled chandelier and navy accent wall. Her headboard add interest and a playful feel. I’d say that this four-year-old has a cooler room than most adults.

scandinavian house tour

I love a good mudroom. This room is modern and full of function. With lots of cabinetry, the family can hide away all they need. She even has lockers on one side for shoes, backpacks, etc.

scandinavian house tour

One cool thing about Jennie’s home is that she rents it out for photoshoots . So if you ever need a stunning home in the DFW for a photoshoot here is an AMAZING option.

Jennie thank you so much for sharing your home with us. You are such a joy and were so happy to know you. I hope this home tour inspires you as much as it inspired us. If you want more inspiration from Jennie I’ve linked all her social media and blog below. She’s so fun to watch in stories and shares her projects and sources for amazing home finds every day.

HOUSE TOUR: A Rustic And Minimalist Cottage Is A Lesson In Scandinavian Design

On an island outside Stockholm, a Swedish architect constructs a flexible, easy retreat for her young family inspired by the region's charming country cottages .

The house, on an island about 30 miles southwest of Stockholm, is stylistically rooted in Sweden's rustic vernacular. The property was once owned by the beloved Swedish folk singer Evert Taube and his wife, artist Astri Bergman Taube, who built a Bauhaus-style retreat here in 1937.

rustic swedish cottage

The house is painted in a traditional Swedish red called Falu Rödfärg and overlooks a garden planted with lavender and shrubby cinquefoil.

That house was tragically burned to the ground in 1969 by a mad fan of the singer. When Iohn's parents, Ulla and Stefan, bought the land in the 1990s, there was nothing left but the foundation and Astri's tiny art studio. The senior Ryotts built a new home for themselves, and their daughter Sofie constructed a small cabin next door.

In 2013 Ninni and Iohn built their own getaway, creating a symmetrical cluster of houses around a central garden planted with cowslip, almond blossoms, clematis and honeysuckle.

The great room of a cottage on the Swedish island of Hölö, designed by Stockholm-based architect Ninni Ryott for her family; the custom sectional also serves as guest beds, and one of the storage units underneath is used as a cocktail table; the hemp rug is from Armadillo & Co. , the fabric in the doorway is from Ikea and the sculpture fragments on the wall were discovered in the studio of the property's previous owner.

The couple's archetypal mini house — a contemporary interpretation of a classic Swedish stuga — couldn't be simpler in plan. The footprint is less than 500 square feet and consists of a single rectangular space for living and dining. There's a kitchen on one wall and a bathroom opposite. A sleeping loft with four beds adds another 150 square feet of space above.

rustic swedish cottage

The small boathouse, which sits on a dock, contains a sauna and was painted in a classic Swedish linseed-oil paint.

Ryott chose traditional natural materials, setting the house on a cast-concrete slab that she had polished to a satin finish. Both the interior and exterior are clad in vertical pine boards. The interior is painted white with a Swedish paint called linoljefärg that dries glossy but acquires a matte finish as it slowly begins to chalk.

"It's very eco-friendly," she explains, "since it contains only pigment and linseed oil." The exterior color is Falu Rödfärg, or Falun red, which dates to the 16th century and contains a mineral by-product of copper mining. So she wouldn't have to wait for the roof tiles to weather, Ryott chose salvaged terra-cotta tiles instead of the more modern cast-concrete variety.

rustic swedish cottage

The interior of the boathouse sauna is fitted with a wood-fired stove by Tylö , walls paneled in aspen wood, and pine-plank floors.

The home's furnishings are minimal. The 19th-century table in the center of the main room is typically Swedish.

"It can be taken apart easily because the construction has no screws," she notes.

The blue café chairs were given to her husband's grandfather in the 1940s. Remnants of Bergman Taube's sculptures left on the property hang from the walls as decoration.

rustic swedish cottage

In the upstairs sleeping loft, the built-in beds are dressed with spreads from True Blue and pillows from H&M and Afroart ; a sheepskin purchased on the Swedish island of Gotland serves as a rug and the floor is white-stained pine.

The small space was designed for maximum flexibility. The loft staircase, for example, can be removed to open up the space for a party or a dinner for as many as 18 people. The beds, built by Stefan, have multiple purposes: The daybeds downstairs can be assembled into a double bed, while one of the storage bins that slides underneath has a top and can serve as a cocktail table.

rustic swedish cottage

The garden's table and chairs are a midcentury design by Carl Malmsten .

The Ikea kitchen, with its composite countertop, has two under-counter refrigerators, one with a small freezer.

"If we're very lucky with our perch fishing, we borrow some freezer space in the main house," Ryott says. There is, however, no dishwasher. "Hand-wash therapy is part of our summertime life," she jokes.

rustic swedish cottage

The sleeping loft's bedside stool is from Åhléns , and the white linseed-oil paint on the walls is by Kulturhantverkarna Färg.

As an added bonus for their friends and family, she built a small boathouse on the dock that is also used for gatherings and celebrations, including an annual August crayfish party. But the family uses the property year-round, which makes the boathouse sauna a particular treat.

"I like it best on a rainy and windy day," she says, "when you can sit there with nothing between you and the open sea but a sheet of glass."

Peek Inside a Modern, Warm and Minimal Scandinavian Home

scandinavian house tour

Today I am taking you on a tour of a beautiful newly built home in Southern Sweden.

I was instantly attracted to its minimal yet warm interior. It has a cohesive and harmonious look throughout, thanks to a restrained color palette and materials – Wood, concrete, terrazzo, steel… Simple and timeless.

The high-level craftsmanship makes this home very special and unique.

Large windows allow natural light to fill the place and blur the boundaries between inside and outside.

The home has a functional floor plan of 142 square meters/1530 square feet – See the last picture.

It boasts a sleek kitchen, a separate laundry room, a family room, a master en-suite with a large walk-in closet, two additional bedrooms, and an extra bathroom. I am definitely saving this one as inspiration for my future dream summerhouse !

Enjoy the tour!

Scandinavian Style House Plans

Scandinavian style house plans faq.

  • What is the Scandinavian style in home plans? Scandinavian style refers to a design aesthetic originating from the Nordic countries – Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. It emphasizes simplicity, functionality, and a connection with nature.
  • How did the Scandinavian style originate? Scandinavian style emerged in the early 20th century as a response to the harsh Nordic climate. Architects and designers aimed to create functional, cozy homes and make the most of natural light.
  • What are the key characteristics of Scandinavian home plans? Key characteristics include clean lines, neutral color palettes, natural materials like wood and stone, large windows, and a focus on creating a comfortable, clutter-free environment.
  • Are Scandinavian homes energy-efficient? Yes, Scandinavian homes often prioritize energy efficiency. Designs focus on insulation, energy-saving appliances, and large windows to maximize natural light and heat.
  • Can you have a Scandinavian-style home in a warm climate? While the style originated in a cold climate, it can be adapted to warmer regions by incorporating lighter materials and maximizing ventilation.
  • How does lighting factor into Scandinavian design? Lighting is a crucial element. Given the long, dark winters in Scandinavia, the design often incorporates a mix of natural and artificial lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Many Scandinavian cities offer brilliant seaside fun. Sørenga in Oslo pictured.

Summer in Scandinavia: five eco-friendly ideas to holiday like a local

The essence of a Nordic summer is to lean into a slower pace of life and embrace nature, from staying in a Swedish summer house to gentle canoe tours in Finland

Oslo: summer in the city

With swimmable harbours in Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and across Denmark’s cities, not to mention plenty of ways to enjoy the sea, from kayaking to urban fishing, there’s often a seaside air to Nordic cities in summer, and especially in Oslo.

One of the best summer activities is to tour the Oslofjord and its archipelago by boat – pack a picnic and set sail in search of hidden swimming spots and colourful island houses. Brim Explorer is one of the best options: an eco-friendly boat company offering silent tours powered by an electric motor (tours from £44). You can also show your love for the water by joining Mad Goats in their fjord clean-up operations every Sunday; participation gives you access to one of their saunas for free and a free burger at the end.

There’s a growing art scene to discover around the harbour. The National Museum is showing an unmissable exhibition by Sápmi artist Britta Marakatt-Labba focused on the environmental struggle and climate issues seen from an indigenous perspective, until August. Afterwards, stroll around the harbour promenade past the opera house, and visit the Munch Museum . There is a new family-friendly beach, Operastranda, by the Opera House this year; it’s also great to swim at the Sørenga seawater pool . Stay at the eco-conscious Oslo Guldsmeden , a Nordic-Balinese hotel in the Vika district from £100 a night.

Explore Denmark ’s sunniest isle

Balka is one of the best beaches on Bornholm.

Bornholm is officially the Danes’ favourite holiday spot (as voted for last year in the Danish Travel Awards). Reachable by bus and ferry or hydrofoil from Copenhagen, it’s known as the country’s sunshine island: Svaneke, a charming harbour town on the west coast, is the sunniest spot in the whole of Denmark.

There’s no need for a car: you can get around relatively easily by bike and bus to explore fishing villages and small towns such as Gudhjem, known for its national cooking competition , and sunny Svaneke, in search of the best ice-cream, smoked herring and locally brewed beer. Bornholm has an artist colony vibe reminiscent of parts of Cornwall and is well known for its ceramics. You can find small workshops and galleries dotted around its villages, and especially in the town of Nexø, where there is a ceramics school. Beaches are wide, sandy and beautiful – especially child-friendly, dune-backed Dueodde, which Lonely Planet recently listed as one of the 20 best beaches in Europe .

New this year, Eco Beach Camp offers glamping from about £150 a night (sleeping two to four) on the beach just steps from the island’s Michelin-starred Kadeau restaurant, known for its focus on hyper-local, sustainable food. Or rent a summer house through firms including Novasol and Dancenter where rates start from about £300 for a week’s stay. It’s expected that you’ll bring basics with you, including bed linen.

Norway’s Arctic hiking route

The Nordlandsruta takes in a magnificent array of Norwegian landscapes.

Culture and nature come together on Norway’s longest hiking route this summer. The 400-mile Nordlandsruta , which runs along the Norwegian-Swedish border, will be joining in the celebrations to mark the Arctic city of Bodø’s year in the spotlight as one of 2024’s European Capitals of Culture. There are a range of artist-led events in cabins along the trail, and activities include poetry and portrait workshops and a mobile perfumery making scents from the herbs that hikers pick along the route.

Evening entertainment includes campfire cooking, improv theatre and Sápmi lassoo throwing. It also plays into another key Nordic travel theme: friluftsliv , a love of the great outdoors. Norwegians love to hike and there is an extensive network of trails, with hiking cabins along them, across the country.

It’s a beautiful hike – whether you’re in the region for the celebrations or not – passing through the Arctic Circle, Laponian Area world heritage site , national parks and Sápmi cities. From meadows filled with wildflowers to snow-capped mountains, reindeer-herding plateaux and raging rivers, it has all the drama you’d expect of this northern landscape. There are 43 unstaffed huts on the route – you’ll need a key from Norwegian trekking organisation DNT to use them.

To walk the whole route would take around six weeks, but it’s broken down into eight smaller stages for those with less time. For ramblers with an eye on reindeer herding and Sápmi husbandry, the 57-mile stretch from Raudlia to Susendalen treks across two valleys and past the hat-shaped Hatten mountain while the 45-mile section from Bolna to Umbukta skirts the sacred Sápmi mountain of Auronasen, silver mines and a glacier. Weekend hikes along the trail are also possible from Narvik and Bodø.

If you like lakes, islands and trees, Finland is the place for you – it is the most forested country in Europe and has more bodies of water than any other country in the world . In the Kainuu region in the east of the country, it’s easy to get away from the crowds for pure immersion in Nordic nature.

Nature Travels offers self-guided canoe tours in the region where you can camp wild along the route, fish for your supper and go at your own pace. The pick of the bunch is a remote adventure on the Tar Route (from £154 per person, for three nights/four days, based on two people, including all equipment and transfers to start point), the historic route once used to transport tar to the Baltic Sea. Instead of tar, your cargo will be just yourselves, your tent and enough food for a four to eight-day tour of quiet waterways, short and easily bypassed rapids, and protected islands.

Along the route you might spot moose, foxes, owls or even eagles. Stop to fish for your dinner, cook it on an open fire and retire to a lean-to shelter or tent in the evening. Look out, too, for island saunas, dotted along the route, where you can ease the tension in your back and arms after a hard day’s paddle. Don’t forget to pack insect repellent: Finland’s forests are known for their pesky flies.

This route commonly starts from Kuhmo, accessed by train and bus from Helsinki, while Helsinki itself can be reached by ferry from Stockholm if you prefer not to fly.

Stay in a Swedish summer house

Landsort village on the island of Öja.

It’s traditional in this part of the world to spend at least part of the summer in a “summer house” (actually more of a simple cabin) in nature. The essence of summer house life is leaning into a slower pace of life: read a book under a tree, bake a cake, a gentle walk. It’s about living in harmony with nature, too, and embracing the joys it offers, including sea swimming, fishing, hiking and boating.

The Stockholm archipelago is one of the most accessible and popular summer house destinations. Access is via one of the many public ferries (one-way trips from the city pier cost up to £14 depending on the location). It’s as easy as taking a bus.

The region is protected by the Archipelago Foundation , which preserves public access to land and water in the area, and has a wide range of characterful accommodation spread all over the islands. They include a 19th-century former customs house on the remote and rocky island of Huvudskär, remade into a rustic youth hostel (room rates from £186 for a four-bed room), as well as summer cottages on the activity-packed southern island of Utö, where two-person cabins start at around £338 for a week in high season.

Summer cottages usually require you to bring bed linen. Depending on which island you choose, you might need to bring all your supplies for the week too. Peak season for Scandinavia is typically July – travel in August for slightly reduced rates.
