Secret Food Tours is quite new to the foodie tour scene in Vancouver, as we learned from our guide, Liam. Even though they operate all over the world, they've been in Vancouver for about seven months. We took the Gastown tour, and really enjoyed learning a bit about the area. How the tour worked: We met at 200 Granville Street and our guide was holding an orange umbrella so he was easy to find. We happened to go on a very rainy day (the tours are rain or shine) so the plaza was empty except for the tour participants. We had seven people in our group. We walked over to a lookout for a look at North Vancouver (covered in clouds and mist), and then went to our first restaurant around the corner from our meeting spot. All in all, we went to four locations. For an extra charge you can add a drink package (prepaid) to the tour and you'll get an alcohol pairing with each "taste." For a group of seven, we actually had several bites of each food along the way. We tried sushi, poutine, a vegan dish (which I really appreciated), then ended with soft serve ice cream. Each time it felt like a friend was taking us out for a bite and paying the tab. We met some cool people along the way, and also got to take a look at the menus. We weren't the only ones who were interested in coming back to more than one of the places on the tour, but The Flying Pig was definitely a highlight, both for the pulled pork poutine and the hard cider. Tips: -Stay close to the guide if you always want to hear what they say. You're walking through a crowded touristy area with lots of traffic. At times we couldn't hear what he was saying. -Not for young children or picky eaters. You don't get to choose from the menu, the food is chosen for you. You don't necessarily have to be adventurous, but you do have to be open minded. Our 11 and 14 year old had a good experience. -We did buy drinks at one of the restaurants out of pocket, and later we bought two ice creams so we wouldn't have to share! But know that the tour is all-inclusive. -Bring an umbrella if it's raining - if we hadn't, we would have been totally soaked. Wear waterproof shoes if it's raining. I'm glad I did both. -Expect bites and not meals. We stayed for a short period of time (enough to order, eat, and use the restroom if needed) before moving on to the next restaurant. -If you don't want to park in one of the area garages (which are close by and reasonably priced - we paid 10.50 to park for the day), you can take a car service or the Skytrain- there are two stops close by. -Don't come hungry. We had a small breakfast but were glad we weren't starving when the tour started. This is not an all-you-can-eat buffet. It's a taste of each restaurant you visit. -Have fun! Lastly, this is not a good tour for those who have challenges with mobility. There are stairs to negotiate, and the crowded, cobblestone streets of Gastown to contend with. However, don't be scared of the walking - you don't do much of it because the restaurants are not very far from each other. We went a span of several blocks in the course of 2.5 hours.
