  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 is a classic sci-fi adventure

As the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts today on Paramount+, one question stands above all others:

Can they do it again?

Because in the show's first season last year, Strange New Worlds helped prove to producers of Paramount+'s new-school Trek series something they should have known from the start — when you're telling stories from a nearly 60-year-old franchise, it makes more sense to embrace that legacy than to shy away from it.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' goes there, boldly

Pop Culture Happy Hour

'star trek: strange new worlds' goes there, boldly.

Fortunately, once the second season gets rolling – the first two episodes aren't quite as impressive as the next four – it's obvious the minds behind Strange New Worlds have gotten the memo. Fans get a wide range of compelling new stories, often in an adventure-of-the-week format, with lots of eye-popping special effects and cool nods to the history of these beloved characters.

New stories with classic characters

For those who aren't Trekkers, Strange New Worlds is set at a time years before James T. Kirk will take over as the Enterprise's captain – allowing the show to retell the origin stories of key figures like Spock, Nyota Uhura and Christine Chapel.

star trek a strange new worlds season 2

A few of these characters were actually created for Star Trek 's original pilot in the mid-1960s , which NBC forced creator Gene Roddenberry to significantly rewrite, recast and reshoot. (instead, Roddenberry used the pilot footage to fuel a two-episode Trek story from the first season called "The Menagerie," featuring people who would later be reimagined in Strange New Worlds , like Capt. Christopher Pike and his Number One, now called Una Chin-Riley.)

One moment in Strange New Worlds ' new season, for example, explains that Spock learned to play the Vulcan harp — seen occasionally in the original series — after the ship's doctor recommended playing music to help the half-human, half-Vulcan character better control his emotions.

And there's a cheeky scene where Spock, in temporary command of the Enterprise, needs to come up with a cool catchphrase/command for signaling the crew to accelerate into warp speed. But the words he lands on – "I would like the ship to go. Now." – don't exactly measure up to canonical phrases like "engage" and "make it so."

Second season has a slow start

As fun as much of this storytelling can be, there is the matter of the season's first two episodes, hamstrung by a didactic storyline that wraps up the matter of Una Chin-Riley's arrest by Starfleet.

star trek a strange new worlds season 2

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley Michael Gibson/Paramount hide caption

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley

Chin-Riley, played with steely precision by Rebecca Romijn, was nabbed at the end of last season because Starfleet learned she had been hiding her heritage as an Illyrian – a species which often genetically augments itself, which is an illegal act in the United Federation of Planets.

As her trial progresses, the series offers up a way too on-the-nose allegory to real-life issues like the U.S. military's former "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" anti-LGBTQ policy. Chin-Riley turns down a deal to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced punishment, saying, "I shouldn't have to hide anymore. None of us should. I know I should have done better. I didn't stand up when I should have. I'm standing up now."

Strange New Worlds , like many Trek series, often wears its causes on its sleeve. But even for a TV show whose cast regularly looks like a Benetton ad, this felt a little ham-handed and obvious (though the actress who plays Chin-Riley's Illyrian attorney, Yetide Badaki, drops a powerful performance that is easily the best reason to watch the episode.)

'Star Trek: Discovery' Is A Refreshing Triumph

'Star Trek: Discovery' Is A Refreshing Triumph

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

There are a few other irritating tropes on Strange New Worlds which are common for most Trek projects, like the crewmembers who ignore orders they disagree with, and the leadership's illogical habit of sending the most senior officers on the most dangerous missions. Also, as much as I love Taxi alum Carol Kane, her addition as a screechy-voiced engineering expert with a surprising past veers dangerously — and quickly — from amusing to ridiculous.

But by the time we get to the episodes where Spock is turned into a human (yes, really), live-action versions of characters from the animated series Lower Decks appear and two characters travel back in time, it's obvious: Strange New Worlds is packed with the kind of grand, episodic science fiction adventure that was once the bedrock of great TV.

And its glorious return is most welcome.

Correction June 15, 2023

In a previous version of this story, an incorrectly punctuated sentence implied Nyota and Uhura are two different characters. Nyota Uhura is one character.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot And More Details

Captain Pike staring yellow shirt

Out of all the different "Star Trek" television series that have been released, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has succeeded where many others have failed: becoming both critically acclaimed and a Trekkie fan favorite. With a return to an episodic format and a focus on Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Captain James T. Kirk's predecessor, viewers quickly fell in love with this "Star Trek" prequel.

Set a decade before the events of the original series, burning "Star Trek" questions were finally answered by "Strange New Worlds." We finally learn more about Robert April (Adrian Holmes) — the very first captain of the Enterprise — and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), as well as the Eugenics Wars and World War III. Each episode captured our full attention as we learned details about the "Star Trek" universe that had previously only been hinted at.

"Star Trek" fans got the best news from Paramount+ in January 2022 when it was announced that "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” was renewed for a second season before the show had even aired to audiences yet. Here's everything you need to know about "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Season 2.

When will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 be released?

On March 28, 2023, Paramount+ finally announced exciting news "Star Trek" fans have been waiting for: "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Season 2 would premiere June 15 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The new season consists of 10 episodes and is available to stream every Thursday. In addition, the series has also already been renewed for Season 3.

In addition, more information has been released about the eagerly anticipated crossover episode with the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks." It's directed by Jonathan Frakes, best known as "Star Trek: The Next Generation's" William Riker. Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, who voice Ensign Brad Boimler and Ensign Beckett Mariner, are featured in the live-action and animated episode. Anson Mount told "Star Trek" fans at 2022's Comic-Con panel that "The honor falls to me to announce that on Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds," there will be a crossover episode with "Lower Decks," and joking that "you may get an extremely buff, two-dimensional version of me."

What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2?

The Season 1 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is explosive, with Christopher Pike forced to realize the consequences of trying to change his future and the arrest of Number One, aka Una Chin-Riley. According to Anson Mount, Pike will be more relaxed in Season 2 now that his future is decided. "His job now is to make every day count as much as possible," he told Esquire . "There's a lot of freedom in that."

Season 2 also features a new side of Spock, with Ethan Peck telling TV Insider , "Spock gets to really start to explore his human side, and it leads to a lot of — I hope — funny hijinks. So I'm really excited about that, bringing that comedic element to Spock." Christina Chong also dropped hints that La'an explores facets of her own personality, with the actress hinting at a dark side. "Who knows, maybe we get to see a version of La'an where she inherits more of the other side of Khan, do we, Henry?" she laughed in the direction of co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers at Comic-Con , who responded with a coy "maybe."

With James T. Kirk finally introduced, the iconic friendship between him and Spock begins to form, as well as Kirk's time on the USS Farragut. "[Season 2 is] more of what's worked," Myers told TrekMovie about what to expect. "But I would also say, in some ways, it's different. We were trying to take what worked and really amplify that. And then try to correct where we weren't happy with it."

Who is starring in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2?

The entire cast from Season 1 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" returns for Season 2, including Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, Ethan Peck as Spock, Christina Cong as La'an Noonien Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. Joseph M'Benga. While Bruce Horak's Hemmer dies in Season 1, co-executive producer Davy Perez alluded to his return as another character, telling The 7th Rule that "his [Horak's] relationship with Trek is not over. We really love him. And Star Trek has a long tradition of reusing actors."

Paul Wesley returns as Captain James T. Kirk, as does Spock's betrothed, T'Pring (Gia Sandhu). There are also new characters, with Noah Lamanna debuting as Chief Jay. Adelaide Kane also appears as Sera, a Romulan time traveler. Another addition is two-time Emmy Award winner and Oscar-nominated legend Carol Kane. She plays the recurring role of Pelia, the new chief of engineering, who is described as "highly educated and intelligent" and someone who "suffers no fools."

Is there a trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2?

A teaser trailer for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Season 2 hit the internet on April 19, and fans ate it up. The two-minute showcase of "Star Trek" goodness features a wide variety of settings, characters, and conflicts. We glimpse our heroes exploring mysterious asteroid fields and gorgeous interstellar expanses — and also a fairly ordinary-looking shop with a revolving door that gives young Kirk a bit of trouble. Some moments are high-octane, including shots of hand-to-hand combat and high-stakes space walks. Others are considerably quieter and even a bit melancholy, like the glimpse we get of Spock playing the Vulcan lute alone in his quarters. It's not all fighting and brooding though — the trailer ends on what might be one of Spock's funniest lines in the series so far.

The official trailer landed on May 24, and it blew fans' minds even further. Eyebrow-raising glimpses of intimate moments — including one between Spock and Chapel — caused a particular stir, as did action-packed shots of galactic destruction and exploration. Klingons, asteroid fields, and some truly bananas piloting are all on offer here. But one moment threatens to eclipse it all: The arrival of Boimler and Mariner, stars of the animated satire "Star Trek: Lower Decks," in glorious live-action. These two grunts cross over into "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" this season, and glorious mayhem ensues.

The Season 2 trailer teases new romances

Between the Chapel-Spock-T'Pring love triangle and Captain Pike's encounter with old flame Alora, the first season of "Strange New Worlds" has plenty to offer in the romance department. The trailers for Season 2 hint that sparks continue to fly, perhaps in some unexpected directions. In addition to a few knowing looks between Spock and Chapel and one intense kiss, there appears to be a close-up of a near-kiss between Nurse Chapel and Dr. M'Benga. The two medical officers have shared a warm working relationship so far in the series, but could circumstances push them closer together?

Meanwhile, Commander Una comments on an "energy" between Lt. Commander La'an Noonian-Singh and visiting Commander James T. Kirk. Kirk has a (somewhat overblown) reputation as a lothario, so it's not surprising that the show might tease his involvement in some kind of fling, but the prickly security chief La'an is a surprising choice for a romance. Will La'an break out of her shell to pursue the smooth-talking Starfleet maverick? This would fall in line with La'an actor Christina Chong's hints across  multiple interviews  that her character will be opening up more in Season 2 as she continues to cope with the trauma of seeing her family murdered by the Gorn.

The Klingons are back, with a more familiar makeup design

Most of the recurring aliens in "Star Trek" have been redesigned at least once, but no one's had as many controversial facelifts as the franchise's most iconic antagonists, the Klingons. Originally just actors in dark makeup and glued-on fu-manchus when they debuted in 1966, the Klingons adopted their famous forehead ridges in 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," with their design receiving multiple modifications and variants over the next 25 years.

When "Star Trek: Discovery" premiered in 2017, the Klingons were given a prominent role, as well as a dramatically different makeup and costume design. Rather than sporting the long hair and bumpy foreheads to which fans had become accustomed, these Klingons had hairless, gray, ridged, and elongated heads. This effort to use modern advancements in makeup effects to make the Klingons more alien was loudly rejected by the fans, leading to a course correction in Season 2, giving Klingons their hair back while retaining much of the new makeup. Since then, however, the Klingons have been notably absent from live-action Star Trek, apart from Worf's role in Season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard," where his makeup effects resembled those he wore during the later years of his tenure on "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine."

As glimpsed in the trailers, the Klingons return in Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds," complete with the prominent ribbed foreheads and luxurious hair and beards that fans are used to. The makeup seen in the trailer is definitely new, but it's much closer to the most popular image of the spacefaring warriors. They're also apparently in a better mood than when we last saw them, toasting a cup of bloodwine with Mr. Spock.

Spock will sit in the captain's chair for the first time

The Season 2 teaser trailer indicates that Spock gets his first opportunity to take command of the USS Enterprise. In one of the trailer's highlights, the young science officer sits in the big chair, preparing to give his first orders. When wisecracking helm officer Lt. Ortegas primes him to debut his own "engage"-style catchphrase, Spock takes a moment, and then says, emphatically: "I would like the ship to go ... now." The streaming generation of Treks has gotten a little too cute lately in perpetuating the idea that every starship captain needs their own signature "go" command, but the awkward young half-Vulcan bungling the opportunity might be the most successful attempt to play it for laughs.

Of course, fans know that Spock eventually becomes much more comfortable in a leadership role aboard the Enterprise, becoming the ship's First Officer under James T. Kirk in "The Original Series" and eventually its captain in the years between "The Motion Picture" and "The Wrath of Khan." "Strange New Worlds" co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers assured fans in a 2022 interview with TVLine that Kirk and Spock meet for the first time during Season 2, and that the show "absolutely [makes] a big moment of it." In the meantime, according to actor Ethan Peck (speaking to Collider ), Spock continues to explore his human side, leading to more of the "funny hijinks" that we enjoyed in Season 1.

The Gorn are back, and so are the Alien references

Season 1 of "Strange New Worlds" re-introduces the Gorn, the reptilian antagonists who date back to "The Original Series" but have rarely been seen since. In the new series, the Gorn are more brutal and terrifying, essentially the "Star Trek" equivalent of the xenomorphs from "Alien." They lay eggs inside their prey and burst violently from their hosts' bodies, killing everything in sight. The episode "All Those Who Wander" leans hard into the "Alien" comparisons, and it appears that this trend will continue into Season 2. In the teaser trailer, we see La'an face down a more adult Gorn in a shot that immediately calls to mind a famous image from David Fincher's "Alien 3" in which Ellen Ripley is menaced by a drooling xenomorph.

However, that doesn't mean that the Gorn are only depicted as mindless monsters. By and large, "Star Trek" avoids totally dehumanizing its antagonists, and fans know from their appearance in "The Original Series" (set years after "Strange New Worlds") that the Gorn are a sentient species, capable of communication and reason. This will not be ignored in the new series.

Speaking to TrekZone (via TrekMovie.com ), Captain Pike actor, Anson Mount, implied that the Gorn, who are essentially monsters in Season 1, receive further thematic exploration in the following season. "Is it possible that intelligence can be so completely ripped apart from any sense of communication or idealism?" asks Mount. "Is there such a thing as a monster? We go down that exact road."

Kirk and La'an may become time traveling companions

Time travel has been a staple of "Star Trek" since the very beginning, with every single spin-off dipping its toes into the time stream at least once. Season 1 of "Strange New Worlds" concludes with Captain Pike visiting an alternate future in which he avoids his fateful training accident and remains in command of the Enterprise for the events of "The Original Series." It appears that Season 2 also features at least one time-travel story of its own.

The final scene of the first "Strange New Worlds" Season 2 trailer sees Lt. Commander La'an Noonien-Singh and Lt. Jim Kirk walking into what appears to be a fast fashion retailer in the 21st century. While our Starfleet heroes are still dressed in their colorful uniforms, the extras in the background of the scene are wearing current-day clothes and there's no sign of any future technology. Kirk even struggles to figure out the store's revolving door, which La'an teases him for.

Such an episode is part of a long tradition of "Star Trek" stories that send our heroes back to the time period in which the show is being produced, usually leading to some fish-out-of-water comedy. "The Original Series" kicked off the trend with the 1967 episode, "Tomorrow is Yesterday," and it's been revisited by "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" in 1986, "Voyager" in 1996, "Enterprise" in 2003, and "Picard" in 2022.

Erica Ortegas is getting a spotlight episode in Season 2

Thanks to its episodic format, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'" is free to rotate its focus between multiple characters, offering every member of the regular cast the opportunity to play the lead about once per season. Almost the entire senior staff of the USS Enterprise got the spotlight in at least one of the first season's ten episodes, save for Chief Engineer Hemmer and Helm Officer Erica Ortegas, who played key supporting roles but never got a story of their own. Though Hemmer was killed before the end of the season and is therefore unlikely to ever get his own episode, Ortegas, played by Melissa Navia, will finally get her turn in Season 2.

Navia confirmed to Variety  that Ortegas does indeed get to be the center of an episode in Season 2. This was officially revealed even before a proper trailer for Season 2 was released, with a preview clip  that premiered on Star Trek Day in 2022. This two-minute snippet appears to be the beginning of an episode that affords Ortegas the honor of the opening log entry and centers her perspective as she prepares to join an away mission to an alien planet.

Ortegas' hopes of getting out from behind her pilot's console and breathing some fresh air for a change are shattered when a nearby spatial anomaly necessitates that the Enterprise's most experienced helm officer remain on board. However, if the format of the series to date is any indication, this just means that the episode's A-plot will take place on the ship with Erica, rather than down on the surface, meaning that the excitable ensign will be where the action is, after all.

Uhura will cope with Hemmer's loss

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" has been an opportunity to delve deeper into a handful of characters from the franchise's early days who never got the attention they deserved on "The Original Series." Chief among those recovered treasures is Nyota Uhura, now portrayed as a cadet by Celia Rose Gooding. Season 1 of the new series finally fills out her backstory, revealing that she joined Starfleet in search of a new home after the tragic deaths of her parents and brother in a shuttle accident. Looking for distance from her loss and a new sense of purpose, Uhura is still unsure whether she wants to remain in the service after her graduation from Starfleet Academy. Her experiences aboard the Enterprise, particularly her bond with Chief Engineer Hemmer, encourage her to stick around.

But, in the penultimate episode of Season 1, "All Those Who Wander," Hemmer is killed in an encounter with the Gorn, and Uhura is left behind once again to mourn and question her future. Preview clips and interviews have implied that Cadet Uhura, portrayed by Celia Rose Gooding, will spend some of Season 2 grappling with her feelings of loss and abandonment.

At 2022's San Diego Comic-Con, Gooding described Hemmer as a father figure to Uhura, and his death is bound to reopen the very wounds he helped her to heal. One image in the Season 2 trailer, of Uhura standing next to the wreck of a shuttlecraft in an Earth-like setting, could even depict her revisiting her memories of the accident that shattered her family.

More legacy characters will appear in Strange New Worlds Season 2

Modern "Star Trek" series relish in the opportunity to revisit popular characters from previous incarnations of the franchise. Each of the shows in the streaming era has taken place during a different time period in the fictional history of the Star Trek universe, making it possible for just about any character in the canon to show up at some point (save for the poor cast of "Enterprise"). "Strange New Worlds" is set during the 23rd century, about seven years before "The Original Series," meaning that lots of familiar names from the classic era can — and have — cropped up on the show.

Speaking to  Inverse shortly after the Season 1 finale, co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers said that Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds" will see the return of more "legacy characters" from the "Original Series" era. Myers declined to offer any further details, preferring to keep these returns a surprise for fans, and there have been no additional hints or reveals to the press since.

However, we think the smart money is on Spock's half-brother, Sybok, whose involvement in future episodes was teased during Season 1's "The Serene Squall." At the end of that episode, it's revealed that Xaverius, the Vulcan criminal for whom pirate Captain Angel is attempting to ransom Spock, is actually Sybok, the illogical rebel who currently resides in a Vulcan rehabilitation center. Sybok is the antagonist of the often-reviled "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," but "Strange New Worlds" is the perfect opportunity to revamp the character. Captain Angel is still at large and is bound to make another attempt to spring their partner at some point. Why not in Season 2?

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 2 premiere is a solid but subdued affair

The Season 2 premiere focuses much more on Spock and Nurse Chapel and the elusive promise of what might become.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Season 2, episode 1

Like a welcome palate cleanser after the "Space Cowboys"-inspired third season of "Picard" — which while fun on occasion, was very, very far from the masterpiece some seem to think it was — Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds" is finally, once again upon our screens. Two relatively recent teasers have offered us tantalizing glimpses of what's in store and it's going to be interesting, that much is certain.

It's safe to say we all hoped "Strange New Worlds" was going to be good and provide a refreshing alternative to the somewhat less enthralling " Discovery " and hit-and-mostly-miss " Picard ," but no one expected the first season was going to be as good as it was. Not even Paramount, probably. And while a rewatch of the last season of "Discovery" is as appealing as a rail-replacement bus service, almost every episode of "Strange New Worlds" improves upon watching it again. It is after all, officially the most watched "Star Trek" show on Paramount Plus.

And a rewatch at this stage wouldn't hurt. In fact, we'd strongly suggest it. Since despite being composed of a largely episodic story structure, there are nonetheless ongoing, seasonal story arcs too ... there has to be to retain out interest. But, it's been very well handled. That said, it would be nice if we could perhaps one day we could go back to having 20+ episodes in a season. But sadly that applies to just about every modern television show it seems.

You will of course need to remind yourself that Lt Cmdr Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) is in a spot of bother over the fact that she kept her identity as an Illyrian secret from Starfleet. While this is far from the most serious situation the Federation has found itself in, hopefully this plot strand will give us something unexpected.

Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) continues her relentless hatred of all things Gorn, but will Capt. Batel (Melanie Scrofano) be understanding of all of Capt. Pike's (Anson Mount) extra-galactic activities? Lest we forget Alora from the Majalan system; Pike's PTSD, plus the possibility of more hijinks with Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and his fiancé T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) and Lt. Spock's and Nurse Chapel's (Jess Bush) blossoming relationship, Cadet Nyota Uhura's (Celia Rose Gooding) blossoming career, Lt. George Kirk (Dan Jeannotte), Capt. James Kirk (Paul Wesley) ... and that bizarre "Lower Decks" crossover.

And while we may have seen the last of Lt. Hemmer, we already know, Bruce Horak himself will be back. "I can officially tell you that the Star Trek career of Bruce Horak is not done," he told Space.com in July of last year.

A rewatch will also remind of all the moments of genius from the previous and there are many, from the seven golden rules of security (even though we only get to hear five of them), to Enterprise Bingo and the "Scorch" to those gorgeous away mission field jackets to Pike's culinary genius ... to the hope that we might see more of Sybok and maybe, just maybe we'll catch a glimpse of the magnificent, mischievous Harcourt Fenton Mudd. We can only pray.

Sadly, the second season blast off wasn't quite of the same high-octane standard as we saw the end of the first season, but that's OK. Carol Kane's character, Chief Engineer Pelia, is a new species to "Star Trek" — she's a Lanthonite and supposedly the species not only lives well past 100 years old, but they also lived undetected amongst humans on Earth for centuries. Kane's character seems to represent the comic relief, which when compared to Lt. Hemmer's arid-dry wit, might quickly become annoying, but it's only episode one so far.

This week's episode, entitled "The Broken Circle," has been written by long-time "Strange New Worlds" involvees Henry Alonso Meyers and Akiva Goldsmith and directed by another, Chris Fisher, all of whom were heavily involved in the first season, so that's a good sign. Hopefully Season 2 won't follow the same pattern adopted by Paramount for the production of "Picard" where different directors were each given two episodes, because all we got was a significant variation in styles that made an already thin-stretched storyline even harder to enjoy.

two characters in starfleet uniforms in front of transporters

The showrunners have chosen to make the relationship between Spock and Chapel very much the focus of this second season premiere and sadly, Pike disappears after the opening credits. Aside from the notion of maybe teaching the Transporter Chief basic CPR, since he or she is almost always the first person to be in a position to treat wounded incoming personnel and maybe an explanation as to what that drug was and why isn't used more frequently on away missions, this was still a solid start.

Also, as far as "your thing" goes, Jean-Luc kind of had two, so he was cheating a little bit ("make it so" and "engage"), "let's fly" is truly awful, Captain Styles (James B. Sikking) always had the best runner up spot, with a very focused and serious "execute." Maybe it's time to stop hanging a lantern on this and let one come along more naturally.

Work on the third season of  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds  continues to move swiftly in Toronto and looks to be set to wrap up next month. We have some fun bits from the set shared by the cast and a couple of directors, as well as some details on the production.

2 more episodes to go

First up, a selfie from director Jordan Canning, who previously directed the season 2 episode “Charades.” The image posted earlier this week shows the director with Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn and has the message, “Always happy to be the redshirt between these two.”

TrekMovie has confirmed that Canning directed episode 8, which has wrapped. Filming for episode 9 has already begun, with Andrew Coutts directing. This will be the directorial debut for Coutts, a co-producer and editor on the show. The 10th and final episode of the season will be directed by Maja Vrvilo, a Paramount+ Trek veteran who has directed episodes of Discovery , Picard , and Strange New Worlds . Earlier this week, she posted an image of her office door, indicated prep work for her episode had already begun.

Anson has a challenge for cosplayers

There have also been a couple of fun recent social media updates from the cast. First up, Anson Mount posted on Twitter/X that season 3 will require cosplayers to bring their “A-game” as he shared some creative fan costumes.

I will say this about season 3 of #StarTrek #StrangeNewWorlds : Cos-players, you better be ready to bring your A-game. #Cosplay @StarTrek @StarTrekOnPPlus pic.twitter.com/mZ9gMmIhsL — Anson Mount 🖖 (@ansonmount) April 16, 2024

One new look for cosplayers to try is an armed Nurse Chapel, as seen in this short video from Jess Bush showing off her phaser holster.

Finally, on the day of the big eclipse, some of the Strange New Worlds team took a moment to check it out. Bush shared an Instagram story with herself and co-star Melissa Navia rocking their eclipse glasses. (They had 90% totality in Toronto.)

I LOVE holodeck dude in cosplay!

I’m curious how long their entire season shooting period actually is.

Usually 5 to 6 months. This one started just before Christmas.

I know I’ll end up watching it, but I’m just not excited for the next season. Season 2 was all over the place, in my opinion. For every episode like Those Old Scientists or Ad Astra Per Aspera, there was rubbish like The Broken Circle and Under the Cloak of War and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I like the cast, but the quality isn’t there- and for all the talk of “big swings” and pushing the envelope- Season 2 was almost painfully generic.

Same here. I’ll be tuning in, but it’s not up there on my ‘must-see right away’ list. I feel like overall, the storytelling floundered during S2, legacy characters written badly, and a distinct corny popcorn feel to it. Both Spock and Pike were reduced to bumbling sidekicks. Hoping S3 has a bit more gravitas to it. Like you said, not the fault of the cast. All blame goes back to the writer’s room. I’m more than happy to consider this show as existing in its own separate timeline, as has been confirmed.

I still can’t get over how *boring* the finale was. It felt like it went on for hours and yet nothing actually happened besides a super-quick and appallingly shot fight in zero-g. Season Two really dropped the ball.

I agree. I don’t even remember what happened in the finale, except Pike at the end hesitating like a scared junior officer when the situation called for fast decisive action. As for the season in general, it feels empty, like nothing really happens in the episodes. I hate the way they turned Spock into a moron. There are better ways if the writers wanted to put some humor in… I’m sure the 12 year olds found it funny but adults are watching too…

They seem to be testing the water for the Academy show with teen romances also. Spock, Chapel / La’an, Kirk and Pike, Batel were all shallow romances and just really boring that took up way too much time in the season. They seriously need to get back to writing some good sci fi stories or this show will go down as one of the worse Star Trek series for me. It seems more of a comedy starship show than the Orville at times. And season 1 had so much promise as well.

The SNW writers room has a chalk board titled Gimmick Board only they misspelt it Big Swing Board. Hopefully they can’t destroy Spock’s character anymore as they have already scraped the bottom of the barrel with their writing of his character.

So relieved I’m not the only one who felt this way. I hear “game changer” and “big swing” and I think “great, they’re effing with my show again to bring in the non-Trek fans”!

Yes, to them “big swing” means having the characters do things completely out of character and turning Star Trek into a Broadway play. Sure the musical was original and unexpected, but really out of place, and I will never be able to get the K-Pop Klingons out of my head.

I didn’t mind the musical episode (probably because I love musicals!) but on the whole, the season felt soulless and devoid of anything interesting to say (outside of Ad Astra Per Aspera). It’s as though the entire season was written by committee and was deathly afraid of offending the fandom by doing anything even slightly controversial.

I’ve had this feeling since the first season. Anson Mount is a wonderful lead, but they’ve completed destroyed the character that we got to know in Season 2 of Discovery. And they need to do something with Spock besides him being a complete and utter pig to women.

I’m absolutely giddy for this next season. Season two was fantastic and I cannot wait for this next season.

I really wish studios would get it together. They used to be able to turn out twice the number of eps or sometimes more every year without year-long pauses between seasons.

Strange New Worlds Season 2 Is a Big Middle Finger to AI

Amid the ongoing writers strike, leave it to this sci-fi standout to remind us that computers don't make great television—people do.

star trek strange new worlds

As I watched Season Two of Strange New Worlds against this backdrop, I couldn’t stop thinking about the series as an outstanding feat not just of filmmaking, but of writing . Like Season One before it, the newest season of Strange New Worlds , which premieres its first episode today, nimbly straddles a challenging tightrope. For non- Trek fans, it delivers exhilarating episodic science fiction, while for dyed-in-the-wool Trekkies, it functions as a prequel that informs and enlarges the canon of Star Trek: The Original Series . These ten episodes has different thematic concerns than the previous batch, but it’s every bit as focused on propelling the lore forward, to terrific success.

If you thought Season One tied a tidy bow on Captain Pike’s future, then you thought wrong. Season Two continues to plumb his canonical backstory for new insights; in one riveting episode, he returns to Rigel VII, the site of an ill-fated away mission imported straight from The Original Series . Meanwhile, a remixed version of “The City on the Edge of Forever,” centered on Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk and Christina Chong’s La’an Noonien-Singh, somehow both subverts and pays homage to what’s arguably the best and most famous Star Trek episode of all time. Season Two also delivers on familiar Star Trek episodic conceits, like a classic courtroom drama that teases a famous Original Series court martial yet to come. All told, Strange New Worlds is a labor of love by writers who live and breathe Star Trek , sure, but also just get what it is: a way of using the future to tell gripping stories about who we are now.

Of course, it takes more than great writers to make great television. Strange New Worlds is firing on all nacelles this season—it’s turbocharging what worked about Season One, while also giving viewers more of what they want. As with Season One, the series remains committed to rifling through genres; this time out of space dock, it delivers horror, comedy, romance, and so much more. In one standout episode, the spiritual sequel to Season One’s Vulcan body swap caper , another cosmic mishap finds Spock in uncomfortably close contact with his human side—a comedy of manners and deception played to great comedic effect by Ethan Peck and Anson Mount . Meanwhile, cast members like Celia Rose Gooding and Melissa Navia finally get to anchor their own episodes, as Season Two sheds its predecessor’s focus on Captain Pike to become a true ensemble series. Ensemble shows can’t have weak links, and the Strange New Worlds ensemble (newly joined by Carol Kane as a kooky chief engineer with fascinating secrets) is a deep bench of gifted actors.

But about that writer’s strike: also among the guild’s concerns is the matter of artificial intelligence. Concerned that studios will use AI to generate source material, punch up existing scripts, or outright draft screenplays, the Writers Guild is seeking regulations around how and when AI can be used. When it comes to Star Trek , the irony here is rather rich—after all, Star Trek characters have been bedeviled by rogue AI since the franchise debuted in 1967, from malevolent supercomputers to hostile cybernetics to android doppelgangers. Star Trek has no unified theory of artificial intelligence (in fact, The Next Generation ’s enduring questions about an android commander’s sentience and soulfulness make for some of the franchise’s best viewing), but it’s certainly never shied away from telling cautionary tales about automation.

Could AI consume six decades of Star Trek lore and come back with anything remotely resembling this stellar season of Strange New Worlds ? In the absence of The Original Series AI baddies like Landru and Vaal, I asked ChatGPT to do the honors. The app generated a Strange New Worlds teleplay called “The Vortex of Time,” in which a temporal anomaly threatens to shatter the space-time continuum (where have I heard that one before?). Captain Pike orders his crew around like a wooden actor in a management training video until Spock, Number One, and “Lieutenant Connolly” trace the problem to a research station, stabilize its malfunctioning temporal core, and save the galaxy (all in a day’s work for Starfleet’s finest). ChatGPT gamely mimics Starfleet’s militarized patter, but ultimately, all it can generate is a serviceable Star Trek conceit. The layer of depth that makes Star Trek sing—its thoughtful attention to what these outer space dust-ups signify about our culture, our morality, and our humanity—is utterly absent here. Sure, ChatGPT can string together a rudimentary plot, but it can’t tell stories with soul.

If there’s one thing any Star Trek fan knows, it’s that even the smartest computers in the galaxy are ultimately just window dressing. They perform complex calculations, beam officers from place to place, and make bridge consoles go “beep boop.” At the end of the day, it’s the people that make the starships soar. Hollywood studios would do well to recognize it.

‘Discovery’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ Studio Honors Iconic Franchise With the ‘Star Trek’ Stage

Pinewood Studios has named one of their Toronto soundstages after the long-running sci-fi franchise.

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek has a strong bond with Toronto; Pinewood Studios stage renamed to honor franchise's connection with Canada's largest city.
  • Discovery 's final season filmed in Toronto; Strange New Worlds is currently shooting in the city.
  • Paramount+ executive producer thanked Toronto for hospitality; future Star Trek productions are planned in the city.

Star Trek has called Toronto, Ontario home since the launch of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, and now one of their studio homes has been renamed to commemorate the long-running science fiction franchise's bond with Canada's largest city. One of Pinewood Studios Toronto's soundstages has been renamed the Star Trek Stage. On Discovery , the 18,000 square-foot stage is used for both the USS Discovery 's ready room and for the United Federation of Planets' space station headquarters; several other stages are used for the ship's other locations, while many outdoor scenes are shot on location in the greater Toronto area.

The stage was officially renamed during the filming of Discovery 's fifth and final season . In a statement, Paramount+'s Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman expressed his gratitude for the city's hospitality to Trek's cast and crew: "Pinewood Toronto Studios has become a second home for our Star Trek family, and we’re grateful that they’ve named a stage in honor of the franchise. In addition to the amazing stage space, we’ve benefited from working with the talented artists in front of the camera and behind the scenes and look forward to our partnership in Toronto on future series."

What Other 'Star Trek' Series Are Shot in Toronto?

Despite the impending end of Discovery 's five-season mission, Star Trek in Toronto isn't going anywhere. Discovery spinoff Strange New Worlds , which was recently renewed for a fourth season , is currently filming its third season in the city. Additionally, the newest series Starfleet Academy is slated to shoot there later this year . The Paramount+-original movie, Star Trek: Section 31 , also filmed in Toronto, and wrapped production earlier this year . While Toronto and its environs are typically called upon to represent alien worlds, the city did get a chance to play itself in the second-season Strange New Worlds episode " Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ", in which La'an Noonien-Singh and James T. Kirk had to foil a Romulan plot in the Ontario capital.

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season has the crew chasing the ancient secret behind all life across the galaxy, even as they try to outrace a new pair of implacable foes. In her review , Collider's Samantha Coley deemed it "well-paced and well-structured, with each episode offering a satisfying piece of the puzzle."

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth and final season is now streaming on Paramount+ ; Strange New Worlds ' third season is currently filming in Toronto, and Starfleet Academy will film there later this year. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

Screen Rant

Book knew 2 weird things in star trek: discovery, but how.

Cleveland Booker has been all over the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery, but he mysteriously knew some information that seemed beyond his experience.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 shows Cleveland Booker having curious knowledge.
  • Book immediately knew the ISS Enterprise was from the Mirror Universe and he knew Captain Pike's catchphrase "Hit it!"
  • Book's knowledge of the Mirror Universe and Captain Pike's warp catchphrase hints at unseen, past conversations with Michael Burnham.

Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) has traveled across the galaxy, but he knew two pieces of information that seem peculiar in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors." Written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 sends Captain Michael Burnham's (Sonequa Martin-Green) into interdimensional space, where the third clue to the ancient treasure of the Progenitors resides in the ISS Enterprise from the Mirror Universe . Book joins Burnham on this mission so that he can try to reach Moll (Eve Harlow), the daughter of his mentor, Cleveland Booker IV.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors" unlocks major pieces of Star Trek lore. Aboard the ISS Enterprise, Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker find a plaque that offers new details about the Mirror Universe's history. Burnham and Book later successfully pilot the ISS Enterprise into Star Trek' s Prime Universe. Meanwhile, "Mirrors" also reveals that L'ak (Elias Toufexis) is a Breen who rebelled against his people out of his love for Moll. In retaliation, the Breen placed an Erigah, or blood bounty, on L'ak and Moll's heads. These are new facts Book learned, but what is curious is what Cleveland already knew.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Book knew iss enterprise was from star trek’s mirror universe, cleveland booker has never been to the mirror universe.

When Cleveland Booker and Captain Michael Burnham flew a USS Discovery shuttle through a wormhole into interdimensional space, they quickly found the remnants of L'ak's ship. Michael and Book then saw a derelict 23rd-century Constitution Class starship bearing the markings, "ISS Enterprise." Oddly, it was Book, not Captain Burnham, who immediately identified this Enterprise, saying, "ISS? That's Mirror Universe." While Booker was correct, how did the 32nd-century courier know the ISS Enterprise is from the Mirror Universe?

In Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, travel between the Prime and Mirror Universes has been "impossible for centuries" as a result of the Temporal Wars.

The simple explanation for how Cleveland Booker knows about the Mirror Universe is that Michael Burnham told him . Book was literally the first person then-Commander Burnham met when she arrived in the 32nd century. It took a year before the USS Discovery joined Burnham in the future, and Michael spent that time as a courier, traveling across the galaxy and falling in love with Book. It stands to reason that Michael told Book about her own harrowing journey to the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Discovery season 1 .

Book also asked Burnham if she ever met her adoptive brother Spock's (Ethan Peck) Mirror Universe counterpart, but Michael never did.

Book Knows Captain Pike’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Warp Catchphrase

How did booker know pike says, "hit it".

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5's thrilling climax saw Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker pilot the ISS Enterprise into Star Trek 's Prime Universe. With the help of Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) , the USS Discovery's bridge crew found a way to widen the aperture of the wormhole, allowing the ISS Enterprise to exit interdimensional space. As Michael and Book launched the Enterprise's impulse engines, Book suggested Captain Burnham say, "Hit it!" since she was in the Enterprise's center seat. But Burnham replied it felt "weird" and stuck to her own catchphrase, "Let's fly!"

It's quite possible that Burnham had an off-screen conversation with Book about what her Captain's warp catchphrase should be.

"Hit it!" is the personal warp catchphrase of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) of the USS Enterprise. Pike debuted "Hit it!" when he was temporarily Captain of the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and Chris continues to say it in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . But how does Book know about "Hit it"? Again, Michael Burnham is the likely explanation. Upon her promotion to Captain at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Michael needed her own warp catchphrase, and she chose "Let's fly!" It's quite possible that Burnham had an off-screen conversation with Book about what her Captain's warp catchphrase should be, and Michael told Booker about Captain Pike's "Hit it!"
